Abstract:
The study attempts to examine the concept of hegemonic masculinity in Tayeb Salih's Season of Migration to the North (1966) and Chinua Achebe’s Things Fall Apart (1958). To achieve that it deals with two concerns. First, it tackles the process of development of masculinity attempting to identify hegemonic masculinity among other stages within this process. Secondly, it investigates hegemonic masculinity as a concept occasionally occurs in popular African fiction with emphasis placed on its presence in Salih's Season of Migration to the North and Achebe’s Things Fall Apart. The research concludes with a recommendation to focus more research efforts on literature that deals with hypermasculinity, the stage succeeding hegemonic masculinity, as it needs immediate consideration due to its critical impact on contemporary world and audience.HEGEMONI MASKULINITAS DALAM NOVEL-NOVEL ARCHETYPAL AFRICANPenelitian yang bertujuan untuk mengkaji konsep mengenai hegemoni maskulinitas di Tayeb Salih’s Season of Migration to The North (1996) dan Chinua Achebe’s Things Fall Apart (1958) ini berfokus pada dua hal.

Abstract:
In this article, we consider Connell’s theory of masculinity through a phenomenon we encountered in our respective research projects, one focusing on the construction of masculinity among early Zionist ideological workers and the other focusing on present-day military masculinities and ethnicity in Israel. In both contexts, a bodily performance which marks the breach of “civilized behavior” is adopted in order to signify accentuated masculinity. In both, a symbolic hierarchy of masculinities emerges, in which Arabs—and in the case of Golani soldiers, also “Arab Jews,” that is, Jews who descended from Arab countries—are marked as more masculine than hegemonic Ashkenazi men (i.e., men of European descent). Thus, while our case studies support Connell’s argument that masculinity may be practiced in various ways, the hierarchical relationship between masculine styles appears to be more multilayered than Connell’s theory suggests. We connect the tension between masculine status, understood as a location within a symbolic hierarchy of masculinities, and social status in our case studies to the contradiction at the heart of modern masculinity. We argue that in order to account for this tension, which may arise in specific interactional contexts, we need a concept of masculinity as a cultural repertoire, of which people make situated selections. The repertoire of masculinity is where the elements and models that organize both masculine practice and perceptions concerning masculinity are stored. While selections from the repertoire of masculinity cannot be conceived as voluntary, the conventional nature of cultural repertoires allows for some leeway in the selections that people make. Hence, it allows for a more flexible relationship between social positions and masculine styles.

Abstract:
Raewyn Connell’s theoretical concept of hegemonic masculinity has been profoundly influential in feminist sociology. Despite the rich literature inspired by her theory, conceptual ambiguities have compromised its full potential. In this article, I critique a pessimistic tendency in the interpretation and application of hegemonic masculinity, which focuses on its regressive role in reproducing/legitimating heteronormative patriarchy while overlooking its progressive potential. I propose that revisiting Antonio Gramsci’s theorization of hegemony can help us understand hegemonic masculinity by its mechanism of domination—force accompanied by consent—rather than via certain pregiven masculine qualities. This reformulation of hegemonic masculinity not only pushes us to maintain a relational understanding of masculinities in empirical research, but also brings attention to Connell’s vision for social change.

Abstract:
In the 19th century, hegemonic masculinity and patriarchal system were part of the society and even became the norms that people believed and obeyed. Emily Dickinson, a female character in Dickinson series, had to deal with gender discrimination practiced by the patriarchal society, specifically hegemonic masculine figure. This research aims to investigate the hegemonic masculinity experienced by the main female character in Dickinson season 1, and how she challenged the notion of hegemonic masculinity. The writer uses descriptive qualitative method as well as the theory of hegemonic masculinity by Raewyn Connell. This study found that there were various traits of hegemonic masculinity that Emily had to face from the hegemonic masculine figure, namely authority, aggression, technical competence, and subordination of women. It also showed that the character in the series tried to challenge the hegemonic masculinity performed by her hegemonic father. The acts proved that the female character put effort in fighting againts the injustice and discrimination toward her as a woman.

Abstract:
Transphobia research has focused on predictors and correlations of prejudice toward transgender people. Consistently, male participants have higher transphobic attitudes compared to female participants in various studies. Further, males are overrepresented in crimes against transgender people. However, these studies were correlational and causation cannot be determined. Masculinity researchers outside of psychology have discussed maintenance of masculine privilege as a motivator for oppressive beliefs and actions. Thus, the goal of this study was to provide an experimental study of causes for increased transphobic attitudes in men, based on sociological and gender studies’ research on hegemonic masculinity. To test this, participants were given false feedback that masculinity score was either “feminine” (the experimental group) or “similar to their age group” (the control group). Results of the present study indicated participants in the experimental group reported nearly statistically significantly greater transphobia than those in the control group, p = .047. Although the findings were not significant, further research is needed to validate these findings. The study provides implications for future research on causes of transphobic attitudes and behaviors through sociological frameworks of power and privilege in the context of gender.

Abstract:

Vonnegut envisions a plutocratic America where the

aforementioned periphery has been made obsolete, where a corporate

oligarchy supersedes the presidency in authority. An example of

this structure is the absent father of the main character Paul

Proteus, George Proteus, who was before his death the National

Industrial, Commercial, Communications, Foodstuffs and Resources

Director, a position which might have been below the presidency at

that time , but the scales have tilted towards total domination by

those who fuel the economy, i.e. the corporations. The

‘unenlightened’ Shah, spiritual leader of Bratpuhr who is visiting

America to learn about the great American society, shakes his head

and calls it “Communism” (21), which it is, with the exception that

there is no Communist Party. In its place is the oligarchy of the

corporations which the government allows to prevent inefficiency.

I argue that the hegemonic masculinity, or the masculinity of the

patriarchy, provides both motivation and justification for the men

who are constructing the totalitarian state of Player Piano. I will

furthermore look at the effects, on both society and the

individual, of a hegemonic masculinity.

Abstract:
The aim of this study was to find out how hegemonic masculinity is represented in the main male characters of four Disney feature-length films from the 1990s. My hypothesis was that Disney films use the same representations as other mainstream entertainment where hegemonic masculinity is promoted as the ideal and the desired form of masculinity. As theoretical background for my research I used R. W. Connell’s theory of hegemonic masculinity that is formalized in the book Masculinities. I also used other theories from the field of masculine research, including feminist theory, theories of power, pop psychology approach and research on fairytales. Some of the theories that I used were to complement Connell’s theory, but some approached masculinity from another perspective. My corpus consisted of Disney films Beauty and the Beast, Pocahontas, Hercules and Tarzan. I chose a main male character from each of the films, examined their every scene and determined whether they represented hegemonic masculinity or not. In addition to the four main characters, I briefly analyzed a few other characters and what kind of masculinity they represented. I arrived to the conclusion in my study that all the four male protagonists had traits of hegemonic masculinity. Two of the four were very straightforward representations of hegemonic masculinity and the other two had some characteristics of it. In other male characters, that were briefly analyzed, there was a character who did not have any of the traits associated with hegemonic masculinity. My hypothesis, that hegemonic masculinity is represented in the main characters of the films, was confirmed and thus, Disney films promote traditional representations of men

Abstract:
Male sex work research has been generally limited to the examination of ‘social problems’. While there have been studies on the occupational aspects, most have neglected the role of masculinity, and therefore research on masculinity in the vocational paradigm of the field is necessary to better contextualize male sex work. Thus, using semi-structured interviews with 20 escorts, this study explored the role of masculinity in understanding the occupational context of male escorting. The thesis shows that male escorting is transitioning toward legitimacy, and more significantly, how masculinity is essential in understanding the occupational features of the field.

Author: David Fogelström Supervisor: Kutte Jönsson  Examiner: Tomas Peterson Keywords: Powerlifting, women’s experiences, hegemony, hegemonic masculinity, heteronormativity   Aim: The purpose of this study is to explore and understand, through semi-structured interviews, female powerlifters experiences of practicing a traditionally male-dominated sport and how these experiences can be understood in relation to hegemonic masculinity.   Method: Through semi-structured interviews with women who compete in powerlifting, I have collected and analysed data to be able to answer the questions.   Theory: The theoretical framework of this study is Hegemonic Masculinity Theory.   Results and Conclusions: The study shows that there are similarities as well as differences between powerlifting and other male-dominated sports in how women experience practicing a traditionally male-dominated sport. Examples of similarities are positive effects on self-confidence, the desire to be a role model and break gender norms while women felt that they were questioned and not taken seriously to the same extent as men. Differences were the experience of being able to challenge themselves in powerlifting and how the competition in powerlifting was a strong motivating factor.

Borkowska, Katarzyna. "The consumption of hegemonic masculinity : understanding gender patterns through computer-mediated communication." Thesis, University of Glasgow, 2013. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/4661/.

Full text
Abstract:
This project focused upon exploring elements of hegemonic masculinity which participants have consumed (or otherwise) in a context of Facebook profiles in order to create their social self-expression. At the same time this study recognised the consumption of ideological aspects that underpin participants’ personal understandings of manhood. The first phase of the research focused upon content analysis of eighty-nine Facebook profiles (Chapters 7-9). The aim was to capture masculine traits that participants symbolically consume and conceptualise in their social environment on a daily bases. The second phase of the research used an analysis of thirty-one open-ended questionnaires (Chapter 10). It explored the consumption of personal experiences of being a man which were also compared with participants’ social self-presentation. Both parts of the research aimed to obtain a complex view on contemporary masculinities in order to understand why some aspects of hegemonic masculinity are consumed and valued on a daily bases while others are discarded by participants. In short, gender identity was a main focus of this research. Masculine identities were shown to be underpinned by social, cultural and media messages as well as individual reflexivity. This thesis argues that looking at the concept of masculinity through the new lens of symbolic consumption allows both the identification of people’s self-expression in a social context and the hearing of individual voices and the experiences of men. This approach captures the multiplicity of masculinities and contributes to challenging the hegemonic facets of gender.

Du, Bon-Atmai Evelyn. "Competing Models of Hegemonic Masculinity in English Civil War Memoirs by Women." Thesis, University of North Texas, 2015. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc848084/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the descriptions of Royalist and Parliamentarian masculinity in English Civil War memoirs by women through a close reading of three biographical memoirs written by Margaret Cavendish, duchess of Newcastle; Lady Ann Fanshawe; and Lucy Hutchinson. Descriptions of masculinity are evaluated through the lens of Raewyn Connell's theory of hegemonic masculinity to understand the impact two competing models of masculinity had on the social and political culture of the period. The prevailing Parliamentarian hegemonic masculinity in English Civil War memoirs is traced to its origins before the English Civil War to demonstrate how hegemonic masculinity changes over time. The thesis argues that these memoirs provide evidence of two competing models of Royalist and Parliamentarian masculinities during the Civil War that date back to changes in the Puritan meaning of the phrase “man of merit”, which influenced the development of a Parliamentarian model of masculinity.
