Full text
Abstract:
A new chiral cyclopalladated ferrocenyl imine catalyst (called 4a2) was designed and synthesized, and its self-assembly catalytic polymeric brush supported on silicon (denoted as Si@PB4a2) was also fabricated by surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) and characterized. The catalytic properties of monomer 4a2 in homogeneous and Si@PB4a2 in heterogeneous in Heck and Suzuki cross-coupling were investigated, respectively. They exhibited higher catalytic activity in Heck, and Suzuki coupling reactions in homogeneous and heterogeneous using water as the solvent, and the catalytic activity of Si@PB4a2 with a turn of number (TON,11933 molproduct/molcat) in heterogeneous was 200 times more than that of 4a2 in homogeneous due to the ordered arrangement of the catalyst supported on silicon. Si@PB4a2 had high recyclability, i.e., at least eight runs and six runs, in Suzuki and Heck coupling reactions, respectively.

Abstract:
Photoreflectance (PR) spectra of a GaN thin film and an AlGaN/GaN heterostructure were measured by using a HeCd laser or a mercury lamp as a pump beam. The wavelengths (λ) of the HeCd laser and the mercury lamp are 325 nm and 253.7 nm, respectively. The energy of the HeCd laser is lower than band-gap energy of AlxGa1-xN (x > 0.2), so electron-hole pairs cannot be generated in the AlGaN layer. Hence, the PR of the AlGaN was measured by using Argon ion laser (λ =300 nm) or quadrupled Nd:YAG (λ =266 nm) rather than HeCd laser in the previous works. In this work, the mercury lamp was used as the pump beam. Although the mercury lamp is a diffused source, it is not a hindrance to the PR measurements. The signal to noise ratio is improved by using defocused pump and probe beams in the PR measurement.

Email: matthijs.suurmeijer@gmail.com Peter Smid - Dr, University of Groningen, Faculty of Economics and Business. E-mail: p.p.m.smid@eco.rug.nl Spending on R&D has grown faster than other investments. This may result in higher return and higher risk. We focus on the latter and examine how research and development (R&D) affects the risks of US firms. We analyze the impact on the firm’s beta, its systematic and idiosyncratic risk, and the combination of the latter two (total risk). Because investors prefer upside to downside risk, we also analyze whether downside risk is also influenced by R&D. We use panel and quantile regressions and control for dividend payouts, growth, leverage, asset liquidity, firm size, earnings variability, firm age and industry competition. We then show that the impact is positive and highly significant for beta, systematic risk and total risk. The impact on systematic risk contrasts to the finding by McAlister et al. (2007) who find that R&D insulates firms from market downturns and thereby lowers systematic risk. The increases in risks are, moreover, stronger at higher relative levels of R&D spending. Unfortunately for investors, downside risk is also increasing with relative R&D spending. The results may make it also more difficult for managers to defend R&D investments. R&D may indeed generate future returns, but also adds to the next year’s risk. The impact on systematic risk contrasts to the finding by McAlister et al. [2007] that R&D insulates firms from market downturns and thereby lowers systematic risk. While the magnitudes of the effects are small, the impact is relevant when compared with other accounting variables included in the model, especially for beta and systematic risk. Apart from this, there are strong indications that the hypothesized relationis non-linear.

Abstract:
The aim of the present work is the synthesis and characterization of new perfluorinated monomers bearing, similarly to Nafion®, acidic groups for proton transport for potential and future applications in proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells. To this end, we focused our attention on the synthesis of various molecules with (i) sufficient volatility to be used in vacuum polymerization techniques (e.g., PECVD)), (ii) sulfonic, phosphonic, or carboxylic acid functionalities for proton transport capacity of the resulting membrane, (iii) both aliphatic and aromatic perfluorinated tags to diversify the membrane polarity with respect to Nafion®, and (iv) a double bond to facilitate the polymerization under vacuum giving a preferential way for the chain growth of the polymer. A retrosynthetic approach persuaded us to attempt three main synthetic strategies: (a) organometallic Heck-type cross-coupling, (b) nucleophilic displacement, and (c) Wittig–Horner reaction (carbanion approach). Preliminary results on the plasma deposition of a polymeric film are also presented. The variation of plasma conditions allowed us to point out that the film prepared in the mildest settings (20 W) shows the maximum monomer retention in its structure. In this condition, plasma polymerization likely occurs mainly by rupture of the π bond in the monomer molecule.

Abstract:
Every life tells a story. Film has proven to be a worthwhile medium in which individual lives can be told and thereby will be remembered. In recent years biographical documentaries telling significant life-stories, such as Amy (Asif Kapadia 2015), Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck (Brett Morgen, 2015) and Senna (Asif Kapadia, 2010) have taken over our screens. While their narrative style often alludes to common compositions of the fictional biopic, their foundation on indexical sound and imagery makes them differ radically. In this thesis theoretical implications on how to approach and understand biographical documentary within the lager scope of biographical filmmaking are discussed. Subsequently the term biodoc is suggested. It implies a close relation to the biopic without compromising documentary film's autonomy compared to fiction film. Furthermore, this thesis sets out to move toward a theory of the biodoc. By putting together a catalog of key aspects and elements common for the biodoc and discussing them in close relation to contemporary examples of the genre, this thesis provides a first theorization of a diverse and growing phenomenon in contemporary film culture.

Abstract:
Abstract A Failed And Persecuted Irish farmer and a bold, pious woman are credited with founding Methodism in America, a fact less coincidental than it would first appear. Robert Strawbridge, a Methodist who fled his native Ulster because of religious persecution, emigrated to America in 1760, settling on a farm near Baltimore, Mary land. Strawbridge was not successful “as a man of business”; his farm, “had it not been for the toil of his wife and the charity of his neighbors, would have failed to keep himself and family from want.” Better at preaching than farming, Strawbridge soon raised a small society of Methodists that met and worshiped at his home. An other immigrant band of British Methodists landed in New York in 1760-only these men and women began to forsake Methodist ethics in the New World. When Barbara Heck, “a woman of piety, persistence, and genius for affairs” encountered her male friends and relatives playing cards, she became outraged, “seized the cards, threw them into the fire, and gave her friends a solemn warning against sin.” To return the group to Wesleyan piety, Heck entreated her cousin, Philip Embury, who had been a Methodist preacher in England, to begin holding services. Word soon spread that Embury’s home was the scene of strange goings-on, where “women often prayed, and even stood up and made speeches just like the men.” Heck was likely one of these women.2 From these modest beginnings, the Methodists grew into one of the most successful religious movements in American history.

Abstract:
This chapter mentions Portrait from Life from 1948, a low-budget production that was made for Gainsborough and represented another step up for the young Terence Fisher. It talks about how Gainsborough referred to Portrait From Life in their publicity materials as Fisher's first full-length feature that hit the 90-minute mark. It also discusses Louise Heck-Rabi's excellent Women Filmmakers: The Critical Reception, which provides an invaluable overview of the Gainsborough production process. The chapter recounts how Sydney Box joined Gainsborough in August 1945 as head of production after its independent success as the producers of the 1945 smash hit The Seventh Veil. It discusses how Gainsborough became associated with productions in two distinct film genres: starry-eyed soap opera romances and topical films that exploited recent events in the news.

Abstract:
In recent years there has been growing interest in synthetic materials within the museum environment; both from an identification point of view and in order to determine their condition. Since their development in the late 19th Century, synthetic polymers have moved steadily into almost every area of life, and as a consequence, into a growing number of museum collections. This chapter introduces some of the fundamental microstructures of synthetic polymers and their incorporation in plastic artefacts. The physical properties and processing of plastics are outlined with a view to understanding how and why this class of materials has found widespread application. Analytical strategies for assessing mechanical and thermal characteristics are discussed and put into context through the discussion of a case study. The technical art history case study considers the materials and processes employed in the pyrographies works by Nul artist Henk Peeters, who created a series of works that exploited the thermal properties of polyurethane foam and polyvinyl chloride film through the application of heat.

Abstract This chapter sets out to study the relationship between a recent newcomer to the field of top management; the commercial manager, and the evolution of administrative methods in large French firms. We shall take as our example the Ecole deshautes etudes commerciales (HEC) and its graduates. The post of commercial manager first appeared at the end of the nineteenth century with the development of senior management training. The commercial manager concentrated on everything other than pro duction and research,1 being as it were the counterpart of engineers in matters of commerce, finance, and administration; after the First World War he also competed on equal terms with them for promotion to a directorship. The underlying analysis is based on the assumption that training pro vides an individual with knowledge which can influence him in a decisive manner, giving him both technical skills and an ability to react more efficiently to given situations.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Non-intrusive pressure drop, film thickness, and wave behavior measurements have been performed for horizontal air-water two-phase flow in round tubes. A databank of over 300 flow conditions in the wavy, wavy-annular, and annular regimes was compiled for three tube diameters (8.8 mm, 15.1 mm, and 26.3 mm). A correlation was developed based on the product of total mass flux, gas superficial velocity, and an empirical friction factor, selected from the lesser of a modified Froude number form and a Reynolds number form. This correlation performed to within 11% mean absolute error across the data range considered. A variety of correlations were also selected from the literature for comparison. Those based on film roughness (Wallis, Hurlburt-Newell), two-phase multipliers (Lockhart-Martinelli, Friedel, Chisholm, Olujic, and Gro¨nnerud), and empirical data fits (Mu¨ller-Steinhagen and Heck) were among those tested. As needed, correlations were rephrased in terms of wall shear to provide a consistent basis for comparison. A complex film roughness model (Hurlburt et al.) was also compared to the experimental data.
