Abstract:
In July 1980, the Barren River District Health Department (BRDHD), serving eight counties (combined population approximately 204,000) in Southcentral Kentucky, was selected as a demonstration site under the auspices of the federal Health Education Risk Reduction (HERR) Program. With continued HERR funding for eight years, the BRDHD developed several successful health promotion projects. Major components of these projects include: 1) community health promotion, which serves to identify high -risk groups in the community and provide them with health education-health promotion services, 2) school health education which included the development of a preschool health education curriculum, 3) teacher education workshop, which instructs primary and secondary public school teachers in health education methods, 4) smoking cessation. and 5) a large industrial wellness program. This study reports on an eight year program evaluation of the HERR demonstration. Overall, the program evaluation suggests an increase in health knowledge and some attitude and behavior change for many of the participants ii BRDHD programs.

Abstract:
Introduction: Despite the positive development of the Swedish public health, the difference in health between groups of people has increased since the 1980’s. One strategy that can be used to reduce the disparities in health is local health promotion. Purpose: The aim of the study is to find out how the employees experience working with a health promoting project and the thought that is that parts of the projects could be implemented in the ordinary work. Method: For this study has been used a qualitative approach where data collection occurred through interviews and analyzed using qualitative content analysis. Results: The results show that the employees were mostly in favor of working with public health project and trying to get functioning parts into regular activities. The employees also find existing collaboration as something positive. Organizational issues are the main obstacle, both long term and short term. Conclusion: The employees have got an awareness of health and they have a positive approach to working with health promotion. There is potential for public health project to succeed if we consider each meeting place’s opportunities and needs. Collaboration is seen as positive, which is a prerequisite for health promotion to succeed. Improved collaboration can lead to even better results through inspiration and a facilitated work situation. Lack of time and resources is the main obstacle for the project and the implementation of it to succeed.

Abstract:
In the past few years, the methodology of projects has been the ideal of many teachers who intend to improve the educational process, trying to apply changes, involving knowledge and thoughts about the teaching practice. However, despite this ideal, teachers are experiencing difficulties in its implementation. In this way, through this research, we sought to analyze the perception of teachers, students and graduation students about the prospect of the collaborative learning in the development of learning projects having health promotion as the main subject. We started it with an educational practice guided by the collaborative learning precepts, having a school from the state‟s public system as the strategic scenario. The kind of research that guided this work was the collaborative research-action, having as participant teachers and students from elementary and high school of a state‟s public school of Cruz Alta Rio Grande do Sul, and academics of the physical education graduation course of Cruz Alta‟s University UNICRUZ. The study was performed in three distinct moments: Identification of the school reality; planning, developing, and evaluating a learning project at the elementary school context and at the high school context. To obtain the information concerning the methodology‟s effectiveness, different instruments were used, such as: surveys, interviews, participant observation and field journal. The data was interpreted by its content analysis. After analyzing the results, it was revealed that the methodology of learning projects can constitute as an important strategy for: learning to work in an interdisciplinary way, the perception of teachers; professional growth, motivation and preparation for the future, in the perception of the graduation student; and a better understanding of the subject, the motivation to learn, a greater appreciation of the school and the importance of teamwork for high school students. There was also that collaborative interventions that occur in the classroom, constitute an important strategy for teachers to restructure their existing practices and overcome the difficulty "time" for their training. Thus, we conclude that the adopted perspective of integration of specific content (health promotion) with educational content (collaborative work and project methodology) and the reality of the classroom was an appropriate choice of work.

Abstract:
Faced with the high number of children and adolescents presenting physical inactivity, overweight and obesity, it is essential that issues involving health promotion are integrated in the school context. Because of inadequate habits when it comes to a healthy lifestyle, physical inactivity and being overweight can cause risk factors for an individual's health. On that basis the study aimed to examine whether developed interdisciplinary educational projects by teachers influence the physical activity and changes in the nutritional status of schoolchildren from the 5th to 9th grade of elementary school. Data were collected in March and December of 2012 (pre and post-test). We used to ascertain the frequency of physical activity, a questionnaire and nutritional status was a survey from the relationship of body mass index (BMI) at the age and sex of the school. The descriptive statistics (frequency and percentage) and to identify the relationships between variables, inferential statistics (parametric and non-parametric). During the course of the year they formed two groups (A and B) of students and teachers to develop focused thematic projects for the promotion of health, thus the analysis was also performed according to the groups. It was observed that there was a significant difference between pre and post-test in the weekly frequency of physical activity of the Group, as the nutritional status not noticed improvement. In Group B there was no evidence any change in relation to nutritional status, weekly frequency of physical activity and correlation between these variables. So the weekly frequency of physical activity of the Group A may have increased the participation of students in interdisciplinary projects developed by teachers involving knowledge of the exercise, as the Group B participated in the project for the breakfast in the morning.

Abstract:
The present dissertation constituted a study of the Oral Health policies in a big city through its processes - of formularization and implementation - its actors and its interface with the National Policy Brasil Sorridente. Choosing as reference the experience of Rio de Janeiro between 2001 and 2006, it was used a case study as it ideals with description of unity - the policy - in depth and detail. The free lists conduction enabled a better understanding of the changes in organizational policies and mainly of two consecutive moments: the supposed centrality of the Oral Health in the municipal agenda with the decree of the Dentescola Health and Citizenship Programme and the chance of establishing one policy of Oral Health in the context of receive, the access and the universal attention. The process of implementation of the "Carioca Rindo à Toa" Policy and of the Dentescola Health and Citizenship Programme depended mainly on the increase of human resources and the approach of these with the proposals of Integrality and Transversality.

Abstract:
Objective: This study aims to evaluate the influence of implementing the Brazil Breastfeeding Network, which concerns breastfeeding policies, in a medium-size city in the south of Brazil. Methodology: This is a cross-sectional study that involves 405 children aged less than 1-year-old which were inoculated in the second phase of the multivaccination campaign in 2012. Mothers or caretakers of the children were interviewed one day prior to the intervention in order to acquire information regarding the children’s food intake. Data concerning the implementation process of the Network were obtained through interviews with the manager and one graduated health professional of every facility that subscribed to the program. Poisson's regression model with robust variation was used to determine the association between the endpoints – prevalences of breastfeeding and exclusive breastfeeding – and the accession of the health facilities to the Network. Results: Through the use of multivariate analysis, it was possible to verify that the prevalences of breastfeeding and exclusive breastfeeding didn’t differ significantly when we compare the children aged less than 1-year-old that are assisted by health facilities that subscribed to the implementation of Brazil Breastfeeding Network and those whose primary health care is provided by a facility that didn’t accessed the Network. It was possible to identify difficulties in implementing the Network, such as the turnover of professionals in the facilities, the non-fulfillment of criteria in order to get certificated and the insufficient monitoring of the facilities by the Network’s tutors. Conclusion: Contrary to the hypothesis of this study, the implementation of the Brazil Breastfeeding Network didn’t represent significant influence in the indicators of breastfeeding of the city. It is possible that the difficulties identified in the Network’s implementation process have influence in this result.

Abstract:
All children have the right to a safe school environment that promotes good health. The fact that children’s feeling of well-being is declining is a vital public health concern. Health promotion in schools can help to create an environment that fosters good health, and the Swedish school environment is in need of improvement. The main aim of the thesis was to examine the health promotion activities that have been performed in Karlstad municipality primary schools between 2006 and 2012, from different perspectives, focusing on the school environment. This thesis includes four studies. Studies I and II are qualitative, and are based on interviews with all school managers in a municipality and children’s suggestions for improvement, respectively. Studies III and IV are quantitative and feature a cross-sectional design based on a questionnaire that was distributed at different points in time. In study I the categories: ‘Organization and collaboration’, ‘Optimize the arena’ and ‘Strengthening the individual’ emerged as vital by the school managers in health promotion, to enable ‘Opportunities for learning and a good life’. In Study II, ‘Psychosocial climate’ and ‘Influence’ emerge by the children as essential to increase school satisfaction and improve social relations among peers. Study III shows that classmates’ characteristics and class composition were associated with different perceptions of the classroom climate. Study IV shows that the school environment improved during 2005-2011 in the project municipality schools, and compared to the other municipalities in the county. In sum, it is always important to endeavor to provide a health supportive school environment, as it is a vital prerequisite for children’s health, well-being and academic achievements. This thesis contributes to the field by showing what is needed to enhance future health promotion in Swedish schools from different perspectives, to improve children’s opportunities for learning and a good life.

Abstract:
A college community health improvement plan (CHIP) focusing on the indicators of nutrition and weight status, and physical activity and fitness is designed with the goal of reducing obesity risk, improving health, and preventing chronic disease. The precede proceed model, logic model, innovative care for chronic conditions model, self-care theory, and Bandura's social cognitive learning theory were used as a research design framework for assessing, planning, and managing sustainability through a two-year college health clinic. The research questions were: what are the current health promotion inputs and activities in terms of environment, ecology, education, and policy and what could be supplemented to improve outputs and health outcomes? An integrated review of the literature, observation of the site, regulatory investigation, and focus group sessions were the methods of data collection. The precede-proceed model provided the analytical strategies to assess initiatives and resources, and to determine supplementary initiatives and resources. Results showed that environmental, educational, administrative, and policy resources were available but limited and not well promoted. Conclusions were that health promotion, wellness staffing, and education exist, but are underutilized, under promoted, and funding is necessary. Recommendations include a wellness program, increased activity initiatives, case management, grant funding, and increased community partnerships. The contribution to nursing is to fill a gap-in-practice for health planning in 2-year colleges. The implications for positive social change are improved knowledge, sustained health behaviors, decreased amount of obesity, improved health outcomes and quality of life, decreased chronic diseases, and lower healthcare costs.

Mundel, Erika. "Story-gathering with the Urban Aboriginal Community Kitchen Garden Project." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/2527.

Full text
Abstract:
This research focuses on the work of the Urban Aboriginal Community Kitchen Garden Project (the Garden Project). The Garden Project aims to be a culturally appropriate health promotion project with urban Aboriginal people, drawing on traditional Indigenous approaches to health and healing, and rooted in community food work. The project is situated within the context of colonialism, the destruction of traditional foodways, and subsequent increased need for Indigenous people to rely on a dominant food system that is seen as destructive to human and ecological health. The purpose of my research is to describe the Garden Project’s main goals and achievements from the perspective of project leaders, project participants as well as through my own observations and experiences. The research methodology was guided by participatory and community based approaches to research and qualitative methods were employed, focusing primarily on semi-structured interviews with project participants and project leaders. I also participated in and observed the project for two years, from September 2006-September 2008. Data collection and analysis happened through an iterative process of action and reflection. Based on my time with the Garden Project, I suggest that it can be seen simultaneously as a community food security, health promotion, and Indigenous health project. It connects participants with food as a natural product, builds skills around cooking and growing food, and increases knowledge about food system issues. Drawing on the health promotion discourse, it can be seen building community and social support networks, treating the whole person, and empowering participants to take actions around their own health needs. It is rooted in Indigenous approaches to health and healing in the way it promotes individuals’ physical, mental/emotional and spiritual health, the health of the community through cultural revitalization, and the health of the Universe through the opportunity it provides for awareness about ecosystem health. This research project was very site specific. Nevertheless, the findings suggest that food work with urban Indigenous people, carried out in a culturally sensitive manner, may be a powerful leverage point for promoting health with this population. These types of projects can also be vehicles for social change.

"Preliminary Progress Toward a Statewide Quality Improvement Project to Enhance Prenatal Breastfeeding Promotion." Abstract:
Case Report: Through the Tennessee Initiative for Perinatal Quality Care (www.tipqc.org), four pilot prenatal (Family Medicine and OB-GYN) practices representing academic and private groups from across the state established primary improvement teams including relevant stakeholders. An online toolkit of evidence-based practices and published tools from the AAP, ACOG, ABM, and elsewhere was developed by an interdisciplinary team and provided to pilot practices. The toolkit included a menu of “potentially better practices” (PBPs) that could be implemented individually, or as a bundle. Success of this project relied on use of rapid Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) cycles. Pilot practices were educated on basic QI procedures, data collection, toolkit content, etc. and shared experiences through monthly webinars called “Huddles”. Regional trainings were also provided at various intervals by the TIPQC staff. Before implementation of a PBP, each practice collected their baseline breastfeeding rate at the 4-8 week postpartum visit. Practices used a web-based, HIPAA-compliant data-entry system through REDCap. The project was reviewed and approved by the Institutional Review Boards (IRBs) of participating pilots, and funded under an agreement with the state of Tennessee. PBPs implemented by the pilot practices included: - Providing resident and provider education - Distributing written literature on breastfeeding benefits and advice - Providing written breastfeeding prescriptions - Having patients view educational breastfeeding videos - Creating a breastfeeding-friendly office environment Baseline pilot data revealed that at presentation for the first postpartum visit, 28.1%, 23%, and 49% of mothers were exclusively feeding breastmilk, feeding a mix of breastmilk and formula, and exclusively feeding formula, respectively (n=196). Baseline data was successfully collected, and early data following the first PDSA has been collected across the four pilot participants. For participating practices, this is the first time they have systematically looked at their 6-week breastfeeding rates. Open communication and brainstorming across the various practices has been very helpful. A numbers of challenges have been cited, including time constraints related to large volumes of patients and inability to extract data electronically, coordination of efforts among large numbers of providers and staff who may be unfamiliar with breastfeeding, and a need for more family, hospital, and community provider support for breastfeeding. Discussion: This quality improvement prenatal breastfeeding promotion pilot project provides insight into the process of team building and use of thin data sets to drive practice level improvement, and lays the groundwork for statewide spread, where challenges encountered in the pilot centers can be addressed. Participants are now looking at the reliability of their implementation, and determining whether their initial selections from the menu/toolkit were effective.

Abstract:
Little Milligan Elementary School in rural Carter County, Tennessee was provided with health literacy resources in the form of health education Go-Packs––easily implementable lessons contained in a small storage tote––as part of the community project requirement of the James H. Quillen College of Medicine Rural Primary Care Track Curriculum. These Go-Packs included detailed lesson plans and accompanying materials that were designed to facilitate health education in the classrooms by providing easily deployable lessons for the teachers to utilize. Four Go-Packs were provided for hygiene, oral health, tobacco use, and nutrition that teachers used to augment instruction during teachable moments that arose in their classrooms. Our objective was to determine whether the development and implementation of these Go-Packs increased the amount of health education delivered to the students and determine what barriers persist to provide health education in the classroom. Participants were randomly assigned a number which they placed on their pre and post surveys. A focus group was also conducted to better understand the faculty’s experience utilizing the Go-Packs and where improvements could be made. A paired sample t-test showed no significant differences in pre and post attitudes of teachers at the school. The focus group and survey questions identified the need to improve the usability of specific Go-Packs, map the Go-Packs to state mandated curriculums and target Go-Pack usage towards non-core instructors.

Vernon, Lesley. "Nursing and health promotion : an exploration of pre-registration nursing students' perceptions of the concept." Thesis, Brunel University, 2000. http://bura.brunel.ac.uk/handle/2438/5547.

Full text
Abstract:
Considerable conceptual confusion exists regarding the meaning of health promotion, yet nurses are called to be leaders in the movement. Pre-registration nursing curricula have been designed purporting to incorporate health promotion principles. In the United Kingdom this change in nursing education has been called Project 2000. Empirical evidence in the United Kingdom suggests that nurses perceive health promotion from an individualistic biomedical perspective. Chapters 1- 4 explore the philosophical and social origins of the concept. It is argued that this is evolutionary, rooted in health education, derived from ancient Greek philosophy. The development of health promotion theory and application to nursing is examined through the development of nursing theory in the United States. Critical comparisons are made by review of national and international literature relating to the focus of health promotion in nursing. Chapters 5-11 contain the main body of the thesis. Three longitudinal case studies investigate Project 2000 nursing student's perceptions of the concept. Three intentions aim to determine the students' health beliefs and values of health promotion on entry to nursing, to establish if any changes in their perceptions of health promotion could be attributed to the philosophical shift from intervention to prevention in nurse education and healthcare generally, and finally to develop an instrument to be used to measure changes in perception as part of curriculum evaluation. The results of the study are reported and contextualised by the influence of teachers, the curriculum and the climate of change in healthcare at that time. The properties of the instrument and the implications for its purpose are addressed. Weaknesses in the design of the strategy are examined. The thesis concludes with a review of the evidence presented. More recent conceptual development is examined. Final conclusions lead to recommendations for further refinement of the instrument, by development of psychometric properties.

Abstract:
This study investigates how heterosexual young people understand and manage risks related to meeting sexual partners online in the United States. The purpose of this study is to help inform the development of culturally-appropriate sexual risk communication and health promotion messages for young people by linking public health knowledge of adolescent sexual health and eHealth with anthropological theories of risk. With qualitative data from two rounds of semi-structured interviews and two group interviews with university students in central Florida, this study shows how young people experience and prioritize more social-emotional risks in meeting online-to-offline sexual partners compared to physical risks. The prominence of these social-emotional risks implies the need for more health promotion messages that incorporate both physical and social-emotional health risk communication.

Nichols, Gloria Nichols. "Bone Health Education for Osteoporosis Risk Reduction in Premenopausal Women: A Quality Improvement Project." ScholarWorks, 2016. https://scholarworks.waldenu.edu/dissertations/2676.

Full text
Abstract:
In the United States, about 8.5 million women live with osteoporosis. Osteoporosis is a debilitating systemic skeletal disorder characterized by low bone mass and reduced bone mineral density that occurs with the loss of estrogen. The mortality rate for this group is about 3 to 4 times higher than other women and as many as 1 in 3 experience a fracture. Guided by the Health Belief Model, this project evaluated how a bone health fact sheet impacts knowledge about osteoporosis and self-efficacy for preventative behavioral change in premenopausal women (age 40-58 years). The project also evaluated if an electronic medical record (EMR) alert system with an additional bone health education in the patient instruction menu can improve participation by 11 health care providers (HCPs). Prior to the participants receiving the fact sheet, the knowledge, health beliefs, and perceived risks for developing osteoporosis were measured using the Revised Osteoporosis Knowledge Test (ROKT) and the Osteoporosis Health Belief Scale (OHBS). Although 87% of participants identified menopause as a major osteoporosis risk factor, fewer women (33%) knew that surgical removal of the ovaries was also a risk factor and half agreed or strongly agreed that calcium and exercise can prevent osteoporosis. After receiving the fact sheet, the participants had an average confidence score of 62% on the Osteoporosis Self-Efficacy Scale (OSES) for engaging in exercise and an average confidence score of 65% for adhering to calcium intake guidelines. Furthermore, the EMR alert system facilitated 100% documentation by HCPs. These results indicated the fact sheet can motivate premenopausal women to engage in osteoporosis preventive behaviors. Importantly, the EMR reminder with education fact sheet can facilitate the active involvement of HCPs in patient education.

Our daily work is permeated by constant social relations that occur in work organizations, so the interprofessional collaboration constitutes a topic of great significance in the context of these organizations, in order to meet the needs in teamwork, especially in the form of services health care. Studying interprofessional collaboration in Health and Prevention in Schools (PSPE) is relevant for the potential to analyze it in a project, whose principle intersectorality, signaling the evidence of strengths and weaknesses in the relationship between the professionals involved in this proposal; beyond the possibilities of strengthening the theoretical and conceptual model for interprofessional collaboration and enrich the scientific literature on this subject relevant to the achievement of best practice in health. This study aimed to examine to what extent occurs in interprofessional collaboration PSPE the city of Sobral - CE. This is a case study with a qualitative approach. At the stage of data collection examined documents relating to the Health and Prevention in Schools and applied questionnaires to key subjects. The theoretical and methodological Interprofessional Collaboration Model D'Amour (1997) supported the data analysis. For the four dimensions and the ten indicators, the results showed that: the articulators of reach PSPE partially successful in conducting its activities to work together around common goals; PSPE professionals guide their behavior according to their professional interests and not according to the interests of teenagers and young people are few opportunities for members of the Project to meet and interact with each other, there is a perceived competence and confidence in the ability of others to take responsibility; formal agreements occurring within the Project not are consensual and are still under negotiation or construction, the infrastructure for the exchange of information is not used properly and / or is incomplete, the role of public spheres is not adequately promoting the implementation of structures for the development of actions taken within the PSPE; existing leadership in the Project is the type fragmented and somewhat shocking, there are moments of training for professional members of PSPE, however, subjects reveal that the articulators responsible for these moments are not always well prepared to perform them, the spaces and moments of meeting professionals are PSPE to discuss specific issues and specific, that do not address contextual issues as a whole. These results indicate that the level of interprofessional collaboration developed in this project is kind of collaboration "in development", to which D'Amour et al. (2008) constitutes the collaboration that is not stuck with the roots in the cultures of the organizations and may still be subject to revaluation based internal or environmental factors. It is observed in this study that the performance at maximum (active) interprofessional collaboration within this project is something possible, however, remains a challenge to be conquered. You must enter the action agenda of managers and professionals involved in the context of PSPE, conceptual aspects and practice of collaboration for the improvement of living conditions of adolescents and youth of our society.

Abstract:
Due to the increased number of older people the population structure will change in many parts of the world, which increases the need of health promotive projects.  It is important that these interventions is based on pedagogical strategies and gets adapted to the expectations and experiences of the elderly to get good results. The aim of this study was, based on a health educational perspective, highlight a health promotion project directed at the elderly. The concepts that was used to analyze and interpret the results were physical literacy and holistic perspective. This study was based on a qualitative onset where one group interview and two focusgroup interviews where used as a method for data collection. The sample consisted three project leaders and ten participants of a health promotion project. The result was analyzed from a conventional qualitative content analysis. The health educational ideas of the project was to promote increased knowledge, increase physical and psychological health and to promote independence. The participants of the project mainly talked about their expectations and experiences about the following categories; to be seen, chances to make new acquaintances and the development of physical abilities. The project leaders’ ideas and ambitions with the project was in line with the expectations and experiences the elderly had on their participation. The participants valued the project's design and that it included knowledge development, physical training and social community.

Abstract:
Access to health care is a fundamental right of all citizens, however for centuries has only been seen as a privilege for those in prison. Only in the XX century these beliefs have changed and today most developed countries considers essential to offer its inmates the opportunity to use the health care services regularly. However the illiteracy of the prison community in this area contributes for a not proper use of these services, such as it considers this an unnecessary activity, since they do not understand the importance of taking preventive measures, thereby undermining their physical and psychological condition. The health education thus becomes essential within the prisons, providing the inmate community, not only the opportunity to assimilate basic information in this area, but also enabling them for the transmission of knowledge acquired to their companions and family members, promoting healthier and preventive measures, as well as the ability to perform self-care. Tackling health illiteracy among the prison population is, therefore, an increasingly common practice in many countries that through peer education promote intervention programs that contribute to the physical and psychological well-being of a majority sick population.

Abstract:
The purpose of this ethnographic study is to describe and understand the meaning of an art project aimed for young people facing the risk of exclusion. Some young people cannot adapt to the expectations the society has towards them. According to the statistics, there are at the moment 51 341 youth between 15–29 years who are not taking part in any meaningful activities, i.e. they are not working or studying further after finishing the compulsory education. The recess years in the 1990’s broke many social structures which had an influence on the conditions the young generation have to live in today. Young people’s mental health has been discussed widely during the past years. The theoretical background of the study consists mainly of two concepts: exclusion and the essence of art. Exclusion is hard to define solely on the basis of statistics. Nevertheless exclusion is always a change in being which means exclusion is a process with different conditions. It might result from individual’s own actions or from the surrounding society. In the project discussed in the present study, the main reason for exclusion was mental health issues. I wanted to see if art can be a tool in enabling the participants of the project to interact and open up. The data collection in an art project organized by Myrsky took two months. Myrsky is a nationwide youth project aiming at preventing social exclusion by improving young people’s wellbeing through art. According to Frances Kaplan (2006) art has three major effects on us: art transforms our emotions, art is a tool for communication, and making of art is a special kind of a process. What makes art process so unique is the simultaneous combination of mental intensity and sensorimotor skills. It is a holistic and intuitive process where material reality and feelings are connected. This enables art to connect individual’s inner and outer worlds. Triangulation of data was used by collecting a field diary including informal conversation quotes from the participants, a joint interview with the two instructors, and feedback questionnaires from the participants asking about their expectations concerning the project. Six young people took part in the art project that was led by two instructors. I created participant profiles which revealed that mental health issues can very well trigger young persons’ exclusion. By analyzing the instructors’ interview I found out the main challenges in the project: communication and self-expression. The main role of artistic activities in promoting participation was to help facing these challenges. Art enabled communication and created metaphors in dealing with difficult matters; hence art carried a therapeutic value. By summing up the feedback questionnaires I found out about the positive effects of an art project: meeting new people, experiencing good group spirit and getting support during the project. Despite the difficulties in communication and in self-expression, the youth had gained some positive experiences from the project; in feedback, discussing and listening were mentioned the most. This art project gave the participants hope for a better future which shows that art can indeed make a difference by creating participation and contributing to social change
Tämän etnografisen tutkimuksen tarkoitus on kuvailla syrjäytymässä oleville nuorille suunnattua taideprojektia ja selvittää mikä merkitys tällaisella projektilla on näille nuorille. Osa nuorista ei pysty vastaamaan yhteiskunnan heille asettamiin haasteisiin. 1990-luvun lama rikkoi yhteiskuntarakenteita vaikuttaen nuorten elinoloihin.

Pennington, Janice. "A Staff Education Project and Screening Tool to Identify Calciphylaxis." ScholarWorks, 2018. https://scholarworks.waldenu.edu/dissertations/5246.

Full text
Abstract:
Calciphylaxis is a deadly disease seen primarily in patients with end stage renal disease. Literature indicated that improved patient outcomes are seen with routine screenings. Many dialysis providers lack fundamental knowledge that would enable early identification of calciphylaxis in patients with renal disease. The purpose of this project was to design a screening instrument and develop a staff education program that would transform calciphylaxis management by promoting early identification and treatment of the disease. Knowles's theory of andragogy was used as the theoretic framework for the project. Dialysis center staff (n = 26) participated in the education. The number of participants was based on the number of staff working at the partner dialysis site. There were no exclusions as all members of the interdisciplinary team play an important role in calciphylaxis management. Surveys conducted following the education were used to determine whether dialysis staff believed they had acquired the knowledge and skills necessary to identify early signs of calciphylaxis. Descriptive data collected by the surveys indicated 60% of participants were not at all comfortable identifying patients at risk for developing calciphylaxis prior to attending the education presentation. Following the presentation, 68% of participants felt very comfortable identifying at-risk patients, an increase of 82.3%. This project exemplified that calciphylaxis detection is a secondary prevention nursing intervention that has potential for promoting positive social change by improving patient outcomes, reducing mortality rates in the end stage renal disease population, and providing empirical data to inform evidence-based therapies for at-risk patients.

Abstract:
The objective of this study was to determine the effectiveness of a 6 week afterschool nutrition and physical activity intervention administered by a registered dietitian with the help of a humanoid robot targeting elementary school aged children aged 6-12 years. The study was conducted across four Young Men’s Christian’s Association (YMCA) sites in Miami-Dade County, Florida (N= 114, Mean age: 8.16 ±1.57 years) using a pretest-posttest quasi-experimental design via randomly assigned intervention (two sites; n=63) and comparison groups (two sites; n=51). The validated Coordinated Approach to Child Health (CATCH) kids club questionnaire and the validated Previous Day Physical Activity Recall (PDPAR) were used to assess nutrition and physical activity knowledge, attitudes/beliefs and behavior change. The Inbody 230 instrument (Biospace, California) was used to calculate body composition and weight. Body Mass Index (BMI) percentiles and associated BMI z-scores for age and gender were calculated based on the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) growth charts. Data measures were collected at baseline (week 0) and one-week post intervention (week 7). Statistical analysis included independent t-test, paired t-test, chi-squared test, Wilcoxon signed ranks test and logistic regression. Results indicated that nutrition knowledge score significantly increased from 67.43% ±21.03 to 81.31% ±18.47 in the intervention group (p

Abstract:
Between 2013 and 2016, 8.1% of U.S. adults 20 years and older suffered from depression, but only 29% of them sought help. This project addressed the low depression screening rate in a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) that supported integrated care. The purpose of the project was to evaluate the integration of behavioral health into primary care in an FQHC through the rate of depression screenings. Two theoretical frameworks, the find-organize-clarify-understand-select/plan-do-study-act model and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's framework for program evaluation in public health were combined into a list of questions and data validity tests that were used to conduct the evaluation. This quality improvement (QI) project evaluated an existing QI initiative. Findings revealed that 75% of the patients seen, and not the initially reported 53%, received depression screenings, which indicated an improved outcome. Other findings were inadequate use of theoretical frameworks, poor data quality, and suboptimal effectiveness of QI team processes. The strategies and tools recommended in this project could be used by organizational leaders and QI teams to evaluate and improve QI initiatives. The project's contribution to awareness about depression through integrated care could increase patients' access to care, quality of life, and life expectancy, and positively impact social change.

Abstract:
Smoking during pregnancy remains a significant public health issue despite knowledge about the adverse maternal and fetal health effects. This research had six purposes: identifying effective smoking cessation strategies for low income pregnant women; identifying characteristics of Kentucky women who smoke during pregnancy; estimating the role of smoking on birth outcomes in Kentucky; exploring the impact of tobacco reduction on birth outcomes; identifying the characteristics of women participating in the Giving Infants and Families Tobacco-free Starts (GIFTS) pilot program; and evaluating the impact of GIFTS on smoking status and birth outcomes. Seven randomized controlled trials targeting low income women with smoking cessation interventions identified social support and incentives as promising strategies. Only one study focused on women living in rural settings. Live birth certificate data from 2004-2008 revealed that 26% of Kentucky women reported smoking during pregnancy. Continuing to smoke approximately doubled the odds for low birth weight (LBW) [Estimated Odds Ratio 1.95 (95% Confidence Interval 1.87-2.03)] and no breastfeeding initiation (NBI) [1.93 (1.87-1.98)] versus no pre-pregnancy smoking. Continuers also had higher odds for preterm birth (PTB) [1.25 (1.20-1.29)] and neonatal intensive care unit admissions (NICU) [1.20 (1.14-1.26)]. Reducers and quitters had increased odds of LBW and NBI. The probability of quitting relative to the probability of continuing was increased for women aged less than 25, non-White, Hispanic, graduate degree, obese and "other" payor source for the delivery. The GIFTS program targeted pregnant women receiving local health department services who reported recent or current tobacco use. Significantly increased odds of participation were identified for women reporting 1-5 [2.05 (1.06-3.94) ], 6-10 [2.06 (1.10-3.83)] and ≥11 [2.17 (1.12-4.20)] cigarettes per day compared to those reporting no cigarettes. Women with one [1.55 (1.07-2.24)] or two [1.83 (1.21-2.76)] previous quit attempts also had increased odds for participation compared to those with no quit attempts. GIFTS participants were significantly less likely to have preterm infants (p=.0369) than a matched comparison group. No significant differences were found on tobacco cessation, tobacco reduction or cessation, LBW, NICU, or NBI. This research has implications for future cessation efforts as well as policy development.

Abstract:
This is an evaluative study of an ecological, multi-faceted, multi-levelled school-based mental health and emotional wellbeing project , called the ‘Treasure Project’. The project team directly supported 3,452 children and trained 607 staff from 56 schools. Realistic Evaluation (Pawson & Tilley, 1997) informed the evaluation. Theories, developed from a review of literature, were used to derive a framework of hypotheses about effective work in the area of mental health and emotional wellbeing. Data collected about the project was checked against the framework leading to new theories and hypotheses being developed. Findings from the evaluation suggest that: 1) projects aiming to promote children’s mental health and emotional wellbeing have more impact if they are multi-faceted, multi-levelled and include a whole school approach; 2) direct interventions supporting children’s emotional needs are more effective if school staff’s capacity is simultaneously increased through training and partnership work; and 3) capacity building is most effective when it takes place over time, is aimed at building staff’s support skills, and is rooted in evidence-based approaches providing good resources for future reference. The enquiry’s limitations are discussed, together with a consideration of how these findings might useful to professionals, including educational psychologists, working in partnership with schools.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: HIV/AIDS has been seen as a thorn in the Corporate World's flesh. It is destroying the workforce like a swarm of locust on a wheat field. The Government Departmental Sectors are no exceptions. This paper has been written after a through project that was undertaken at the Department of Transport and Public Works in Cape Town. It was found that there is a great need for HIV/AIDS Education and Life skills Training amongst all Government Departments. The objectives of the researcher were also based on the ILO's document and our South African Labour Law. The employees at 7 (Seven) District Offices were educated and workshoped on HIV/AIDS Education. It was impossible to have all three Employee Assistant Programmes conducted within 7 (Seven) months of the project. The programmes for HIV/AIDS Education and Training entailed Pre-Awareness, Awareness and Post-Awareness. Only the Pre- Awareness programme was completed with a bit of Awareness was covered. In the workplace situation, time means money and it seems as if less time is allocated to the health part of the employees. Common and better methods in facilitating for HIV/AIDS Education and Trainings were by "Cascade Model, On-Job-Training (OJT) or Front Line Training (FLT) and Workshop Sessions" seem to be more appropriate, yielding better communication skills between the employees and employers. A simple questionnaire was constructed on the basis that the sample group was workshopped. The response was great and constructive comments were received from the employees, for example a question was "Do you find it good to celebrate the 09th - 15th February: Condom Week; 16th May: International AIDS Candle Memorial Day and 01st December: World AIDS Day"? Answer: YES - It creates awareness and unites people for the same course. It became interesting to the researcher in noticing how HIV/AIDS Education and Life Skills Training(HAELST) is very much needed in both Corporate/Private Sectors and Government Departments. In conclusion, recommendations are suggested to all Government Departmental and Private Sectors in HIV/AIDS Education and Training. The ball remains in the Corporate World to apply them as a tool to avoid loosing well qualified and skilful employees because of HIV/AIDS.
