Abstract:
This chapter describes various approaches to occupational and environmental health surveillance. It begins by defining public health surveillance and the basic principles of surveillance, emphazing the critical link between data and action and the importance of using surveillance findings to improve worker and community health. It describes case-based surveillance, population-based surveillance, rate-based surveillance, and hazard surveillance. It describes surveillance systems, including those based on physician reporting and on laboratory reporting. The chapter provides a description of the major occupational health surveillance systems and environmental health surveillance activities in the United States, and includes examples of how data have been translated to action. It concludes in identifying some of the surveillance challenges and opportunities related to 21st century changes in the workplace, the ambient environment, and information technology.

Abstract:
Quality data are necessary to make good decisions in health delivery for both individuals and populations. Data can be used to improve care and achieve equity. However, systems for health data management were historically weak in most impoverished countries. Health data are not uncommonly compiled in stacks of poorly organized paper records. Efforts to streamline and improve health information discussed in this chapter include patient-held booklets, demographic health surveys, and the use of common indicators. This chapter also focuses on the evolution of medical records, including electronic systems. The use of data for monitoring, evaluation, and quality improvement is explained. Finally, this chapter reviews the use of frameworks—such as logic models and log frames—for program planning, evaluation, and improvement.

Neisseria gonorrhoeae Antimicrobial Resistance Surveillance: Consolidated Guidance. Organización Panamericana de la Salud, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.37774/9789275122365.

Full text
Abstract:
Prevention, early diagnosis, and effective treatment are essential for the control and elimination of Neisseria gonorrhoeae as a public health problem. Currently, in Latin America and the Caribbean, treatment for gonorrhea infection is largely empiric and based on clinical diagnosis. In the Americas, the high burden of new N. gonorrhoeae infections (estimated at 11 million new cases a year), the complexity of the disease epidemiology, and in many countries the limited resources, make it difficult to fully understand the burden of disease and the burden of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in N. gonorrhoeae. PAHO has developed this document to facilitate the navigation of available guidance and recommendations for N. gonorrhoeae AMR surveillance by public health and health care professionals, at the national and subnational levels, involved in designing, implementing, and/or strengthening AMR surveillance of N. gonorrhoeae and overall surveillance of sexually transmitted infections. This document aims to consolidate guidance on AMR surveillance for N. gonorrhoeae from documents published by WHO and PAHO, and strives to assemble relevant information in a summarized manner to help countries in strengthening and/or developing AMR surveillance systems for N. gonorrhoeae.
