Abstract:
The facility of ion beam laboratory at Kochi University of Technology (KUT) has been extended by installing the Particle Induced X-ray Emission (PIXE) technique, in order to provide qualitative and quantitative elemental analysis and in-air micro-PIXE analysis. This paper is a description of PIXE setup and its application in biological sample for qualitative elemental analysis. The energy calibration of the system shows linearity. The minimum detection limit indicates that the system has good detection limit. The homogeneity shows uniformity of the sample itself and the internal standard within the sample. A 4 MeV He++ ion beam was used to analyze shellfish samples. Analyzing samples, it was found that the lower Z elements as well as some trace elements were detected. Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to analyze quantitatively trace elements in human organs without decomposing samples. A palladium thin layer was deposited onto a sample on carbon adhesive tape using a metal ion sputtering equipment. The Pd film was used as an internal standard to determine concentrations of trace elements in human liver. Bovine Liver was applied as the reference standard. Five elements Cu , Zn , Mn , Se and Fe were measured by this method. The values of Copper, Zinc and iron concentrations determined by PIXE using this method agree well with those by ICP-AES. It can he asserted that this method is quite useful in the study of non-destructive PIXE analysis.

Abstract:
Microencapsulated anti-RLIP76 was tested in vivo using C 3 He / J mice to determine the increasing of antitumor effects by chemotherapeutic agent efflux inhibition during chemoradiotherapy. Microcapsules were produced by spraying a mixture of 3.0% hyaluronic acid, 2.0% alginate, 3.0% H 2 O 2, and 0.3 mmol carboplatin onto a mixture of 0.3 mol FeCl 2 and 0.15 mol CaCl 2. Microcapsules were subcutaneously injected into MM46 tumors previously inoculated into the left hind legs of C 3 He / J mice. Subsequent radiotherapy consisted of tumor irradiation with 10 Gy or 20 Gy 60 Co . The antitumor effects of microcapsules were tested by measuring tumor size and monitoring tumor growth. Three types of adverse effects were considered: fuzzy hair, loss of body weight, and mortality. Carboplatin levels were monitored using particle-induced X-ray emission (PIXE) and a micro-PIXE camera. Anti-RLIP76 inhibited the efflux of carboplatin from tumor tissue, which led to an increase in the concentration of carboplatin. Higher carboplatin concentration significantly increased the combined antitumor effect of radiation and chemotherapy. A significant decrease in adverse effects was also observed with microencapsulated anti-RLIP76.

Abstract:
The characterization of the single crystal of type 304 stainless steels was performed by using particle induced x-ray emission and Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy with channeling technique (PIXE-C and RBS-C). They proved that the solution annealing process is absolutely necessary for production of a good single crystal of stainless steels. They are also shown that the positions of P atoms before He irradiation were mostly substitutional sites of fcc structure and that MeV He ion irradiation induced segregation of Si and S atoms to the (110) surface.

Abstract:
The experimental arrangements used for external beam PIXE analysis of biomedical samples are surveyed. Emphasis is given to the instrumental and physical aspects of the various measuring systems. Special features of the setups and other means of obtaining optimal measuring conditions play an important role in many cases. The proper choice of bombarding proton energy and the minimization of the system background radiation make significant contributions to the sensitivity obtainable by the technique. Parameters such as exit foil materials, setup cons- truction materials, gas atmosphere used (eg. He, air), beam current normalization and system geometry are of specific interest. Some typical recent examples in the field are given.

Abstract:
We have developed an in-air on/off axis STIM for simultaneous density mapping with PIXE and RBS, which will be useful for damage-monitoring in cell analysis and for yield correction based on the thickness distribution of X-ray self-absorption in samples. The in-air on/off axis STIM system provides a mass concentration map in the cell analysis. In the system, a thin scattering foil is placed downstream of the sample and scattered protons are detected by a Si -PIN photodiode set at 30 degrees with respect to the beam axis. These components are set in a He -gas-filled chamber to reduce energy loss, scattering and sample damage. Using this system, areal density mapping is carried out for RBL-2H3 cells simultaneously with PIXE and RBS. Correction for self-absorption is performed and areal density map of elements is converted into a mass-concentration map using the measured matrix density. The areal density distribution of P corresponds to that of matrix and mass concentration of P is uniform in the cell region. On the other hand, Br is concentrated in the nucleus, even in the mass concentration map. The Br accumulation in the nucleus is first confirmed in mass concentration using the on/off axis STIM and PIXE system. The in-air on/off STIM system will be effective for monitoring changes in cell density during beam irradiation.

Abstract:
With the aim of characterizing polymer-based drug delivery systems a combination of Scanning MeV 3 He microbeam Nuclear Reaction, Backscattering and Particle Induced X-ray Emission (PIXE) techniques has been developed. This, together with gravimetric and UV techniques has been applied to characterize both water infusion and drug effusion for three in-mouth polymer–drug systems. Preliminary results are presented from the exposure of polymers, containing drug at a level of 9% by weight of the dry polymer, to both pure water and a phosphate buffered saline solution at 37°C.

Abstract:
The penetration abilities of surfactants need to be known by companies manufacturing hair-care products. In this work three complementary techniques were used simultaneously - PIXE, NRA and RBS - to measure the penetration of a surfactant, which had been deuterated, into permed hair fibres. Using a scanning micro-beam of 2MeV 3 He ions 2-dimensional concentration maps were obtained which showed whether the surfactant penetrated the fibre or just stayed on the surface. This is the first report of the use of three simultaneous scattering techniques with a scanning micro-beam.

Abstract:
The quantification of trace elements in silver coins minted in the 16th century is aimed at tracing the sources of supply for the Nantes mint. The gold was analysed using HE-PIXE and p- XRF methods, leading to the tracking of silver from Potosi to Nantes between 1561 and 1600. This work also contributed to the development of high-energy PIXE to improve the detection limit of indium, another tracer of Potosian silver. To characterise the surface state of conservation of the gilding on a 12th-century crucifix (cross + Christ), thickness measurements were carried out using HE-PIXE, completed by p-XRF. Particular attention was paid to the experimental set-up in order to analyse an object with a complex geometry. The measured values are in agreement with literature data (2-10 μm). The disparity in thickness gives the restorer information about the quality of the workmanship and the skill of the gilding process. These results attest to a thinner gilding than expected on the Christ, which shows good control of the gilding process even on brass. The tin brazing of a medieval lead pipe covered by a thick layer of corrosion was probed by proton activation (PAA) up to 8 mm. We observed that the Pb/Sn proportions varied with the thickness of the solder, when compared with the case of a eutectic alloy. This provides crucial information for understanding the manufacturing techniques used at the time
