In this thesis, we study theoretically the transport properties of electrons and emission of a coherent beam of TA phonons with terahetz frequencies, known as saser, from a semiconductor device of nanometric dimensions formed by a double barrier heterostructure and controlled by an external potential. The system is described by a Hamiltonian in the 'tight-binding' approximation in which the electrons, the phonons, the electron-phonon and the electron-electron interactions contributions are included. To study the electronic transport properties we use the Keldysh formalism, which directly considers the many body's interactions, to reduce the flow of electrons out of equilibrium to one that depends on the retarded Green functions that are in the thermodynamic equilibrium at a given temperature. A procedure known as decimation is used repeatedly throughout this work to find such retarded Green functions. To study the emission properties of the TA phonons, we solve the kinetic equations that govern the populations of electrons in the first two resonant levels and the phonons in the well. The potential profile and the charge distribution energy are calculated self-consistently, through a system of equations which includes the Poisson equation. We verify in our results the well known regions of instability at the beginning LO phonon emission and bistability at the end of the second peak current. We analyze the behavior of these regions through the change in the barriers thickness of the HDB. A study of the influence of temperature on saser is carried out in this work. At low temperatures, our results coincide with those in the literature.

Abstract:
By 1970, Singapore’s urban landscape was dominated by high-rise blocks of planned public housing built by the People’s Action Party government, signifying the establishment of a high modernist nation-state. A decade earlier, the margins of the City had been dominated by kampongs, home to semi-autonomous communities of low-income Chinese families which freely built, and rebuilt, unauthorised wooden houses. This change was not merely one of housing but belied a more fundamental realignment of state-society relations in the 1960s. Relocated in Housing and Development Board flats, urban kampong families were progressively integrated into the social fabric of the emergent nation-state. This study examines the pivotal role of an event, the great Kampong Bukit Ho Swee fire of 1961, in bringing about this transformation. The redevelopment of the fire site in the aftermath of the calamity brought to completion the British colonial regime’s ‘emergency’ programmes of resettling urban kampong dwellers in planned accommodation, in particular, of building emergency public housing on the sites of major fires in the 1950s. The PAP’s far greater political resolve, and the timing of and state of emergency occasioned by the scale of the 1961 disaster, enabled the government to rehouse the Bukit Ho Swee fire victims in emergency housing in record time. This in turn provided the HDB with a strategic platform for clearing other kampongs and for transforming their residents into model citizens of the nation-state. The 1961 fire’s symbolic usefulness extended into the 1980s and beyond, in sanctioning the PAP’s new housing redevelopment schemes. The official account of the inferno has also become politically useful for the government of today for disciplining a new generation of Singaporeans against taking the nation’s progress for granted. Against these exalted claims of the fire’s role in the Singapore Story, this study also examines the degree of actual change and continuity in the social and economic lives of the people of Bukit Ho Swee after the inferno. In some crucial ways, the residents continued to occupy a marginal place in society while pondering, too, over the unresolved question of the cause of the fire. These continuities of everyday life reflect the ambivalence with which the citizenry regarded the high modernist state in contemporary Singapore.

Abstract:
This dissertation describes preparation and characterization of Ni2P catalysts and their application in hydrodesulfurization (HDS) and hydrodenitrogenation (HDN). The work carried out includes synthesis of Ni2P on different siliceous supports, SiO2 and MCM-41. It also includes characterization of these catalytic materials using X-ray diffraction (XRD), temperature-programmed reduction (TPR), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and X-ray absorbance fine structure (XAFS) spectroscopy. In situ FTIR was employed to study the acidity of Ni2P/SiO2 and probe the catalytic sites involved in the HDN of pyridine. Transient and steady-state kinetics of a surface intermediate that is formed upon pyridine adsorption and reaction was studied to elucidate the mechanism of HDN over Ni2P/SiO2. Additionally, in situ FTIR and X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy was utilized to probe the bonding, mechanism and kinetics of thiophene HDS over a novel MCM-41-supported Ni2P catalyst. The use of these techniques allowed for better understanding of the surface intermediates, mechanisms and the nature of the active sites involved in HDN and HDS.

Abstract:
This dissertation describes preparation and characterization of Ni2P catalysts and their application in deep hydrodesulfurization (HDS) of a model sulfur compound, 4,6-dimethyldibenzothiophene (4,6-DMDBT), one of the most refractory S-compounds. This topic is of great importance in addressing recently enacted environmental regulations limiting the sulfur content in fuels. The work carried out includes synthesis of Ni2P on different siliceous supports, SiO2, MCM-41, and ultra-stable Y zeolite (USY). It also includes determining the characteristics of the supported Ni2P catalysts with a wide range of techniques: X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) spectroscopy. The use of these techniques allowed better understanding of the nature of the active sites as well as the effect of supports. Activity tests were conducted in the HDS of 4,6-DMDBT and the HDN of quinoline. The performance of the catalysts will be compared to that of a conventional sulfide hydrotreating catalyst, Ni-Mo-S/Al2O3. Investigation of the reaction mechanism in the hydrodenitrogenation (HDN) of 2-methylpiperidine together with in situ FT-IR measurements were conducted to understand how catalyst properties affect activity and selectivity.

Abstract:
This thesis focuses on current approaches to the measurement of poverty. The aim of the thesis is to evaluate if measuring poverty indicators and quality of life indicators used by United Nations Development Programme and Eurostat are meaningful enough. The theoretical part is an analysis of chosen indicators. The theoretical knowledge is followed by practical part, comparing poverty levels in member states of the European Union, and giving deeper insight into the analysis of sub-indicators. Furthermore, the thesis looks at informative value connected to mutual relations among the indicators. The comparison reveals that the level of human development is negatively related to aspects such as insufficient economic growth, inequality and low level of wealth redistribution. From an analytical point of view, new multi-criteria indicators are useful enough for the purpose of research on this topic, in spite of certain imperfections.

Abstract:

Abstract:
HDR imaging and 3D imaging are two areas in which the simultaneous but separate development has been growing in recent years. On the one hand, HDR (High Dynamic Range) imaging allows to extend the dynamic range of traditionnal images called LDR (Low Dynamic Range). On the other hand, 3Dimaging offers immersion in the shown film with the feeling to be part of the acquired scene. Recently, these two areas have been combined to provide 3D HDR images or videos but few viable solutions existand none of them is available to the public. In this thesis, we propose a method to generate 3D HDR images for autostereoscopic displays by adapting a multi-viewpoints camera to several exposures acquisition. To do that, neutral density filters are fixed on the objectives of the camera. Then, pixel matchingis applied to aggregate pixels that represent the same point in the acquired scene. Finally, radiance is calculated for each pixel of the set of images by using a weighted average of LDR values. An additiona lstep is necessary because some pixels have wrong radiance. We proposed a method based on the color of adjacent pixels and two methods based on the correction of the disparity of those pixels. The first method is based on the disparity of pixels of the neighborhood and the second method on the disparity independently calculated on each color channel. This pipeline allows the generation of 3D HDR image son each viewpoint. A tone-mapping algorithm is then applied on each of these images. Their composition with filters corresponding to the autostereoscopic screen used allows the visualization of the generated 3DHDR image

Chen, Dawei. "The role of HBD-2 and HBD-3 in human T cell development." Thesis, University of East London, 2016. http://roar.uel.ac.uk/5121/.

Full text
Abstract:
Human β-defensins (hBDs) are a family of cationic peptides able to directly kill a wide range of microorganisms including bacteria, fungi and viruses. In addition to their antimicrobial activities, defensins also contribute to the modulation of both the host innate and adaptive immunity. In this project, we demonstrate that the αCD3/28 co-stimulation of human CD4+ T cells in the presence of 10μg/ml hBD-2 or hBD-3 together causes an up-regulation in numbers of CD4+CD69+CD25+ and CD4+CD69-CD25+ T cell subsets, indicating that the treatment of hBD-2 and 3 enhances CD4+ T cell activation. Consistent with this finding, proliferation assay using CFSE suggests that hBD-2 and hBD-3 treatment in vitro induces the proliferation of CD4+ T cells following by 96hrs culture. Analysis of expression of the regulatory T cells (Tregs) specific marker, FoxP3, reveals a shift in the CD4+CD127-CD25+ Treg subset at 18hrs. However, at the later time point, we found that the percentage of FoxP3+cells decreased in the CD4+CD127-CD25+ Treg population, whereas the presence of the FoxP3+CTLA-4+ Treg subset increased. These data indicate that Treg suppressive function may be potentially defective following the co-incubation of purified T cells with either hBD-2 or hBD-3 for 42hrs in vitro due to the apparent loss of FoxP3 expression. We further characterise the role of hBD-2 and hBD-3 in driving human CD4+ T cells polarisation. Our in vitro data suggests that treatment with hBD-2 and hBD-3 can not only induces effector T cell (Teff) differentiation into RORγt+T-bet+ (Th17/Th1) cells, but can also trigger the differentiation of Treg expressing RORγt and T-bet rather than the master controller of Treg function, FoxP3. This apparent plasticity of T cell phenotype allows them to convert from Treg to Th1/17-like effector T cell phenotype following 18hrs in culture. By 42hrs in culture, treatment with hBD-2 and hBD-3 induced both Teff cell and Treg cell differentiation towards the Th17-like phenotype. Compared with the treatment with hBD-2, treatment with hBD-3 induced a more pronounced effect to increase levels of RORγt in CD4+ T cells. This elevated expression may, in turn, be responsible for the induction of higher IL-17A secretion. Consistent with this idea, it was found that treatment with hBD-3 but not hBD-2 was capable of inducing the higher level of secretion of IL-17A. Additionally, treatment with hBD-3 induced an increased expression of IL-6, which is capable of driving the differentiation of naïve T cells towards IL-17-producing Th17 cells. Functionally, using the Treg suppression assay, the data suggested that hBD-2 may dampen down Treg cell ability to induce suppression of Teff cell activity. Interestingly, co-culture with hBD-2 would also appear to increase Teff cell resistance to Treg immunoregulation in vitro. Further investigation using microarray gene analysis revealed chemokine C-C motif ligand 1 (CCL1) as potential genes responding to hBD-2 treatment. The blockade of CCL1 has been reported to inhibit Treg suppressive function. Thus, this study explored the function of these antimicrobial candidates in regulating CD4+ T cell plasticity which could result in hBD-2 and hBD-3 being able to regulate its own production, but also may regulate Treg and Teff cell development and function, thus strengthening the link between innate and adaptive immunity.

Full text
Abstract:
One out of eight deaths throughout the world is due to cancer. Developing new treatments and improving existing treatments is hence of major importance. In this thesis we have studied how mathematical optimization can be used to improve an existing treatment method: high-dose-rate (HDR) brachytherapy. HDR brachytherapy is a radiation modality used to treat tumours of for example the cervix, prostate, breasts, and skin. In HDR brachytherapy catheters are implanted into or close to the tumour volume. A radioactive source is moved through the catheters, and by adjusting where the catheters are placed, called catheter positioning, and how the source is moved through the catheters, called the dwelling time pattern, the dose distribution can be controlled. By constructing an individualized catheter positioning and dwelling time pattern, called dose plan, based on each patient's anatomy, it is possible to improve the treatment result. Mathematical optimization has during the last decade been used to aid in creating individualized dose plans. The dominating optimization model for this purpose is a linear penalty model. This model only considers the dwelling time pattern within already implanted catheters, and minimizes a weighted deviation from dose intervals prescribed by a physician. In this thesis we show that the distribution of the basic variables in the linear penalty model implies that only dwelling time patterns that have certain characteristics can be optimal. These characteristics cause troublesome inhomogeneities in the plans, and although various measures for mitigating these are already available, it is of fundamental interest to understand their cause. We have also shown that the relationship between the objective function of the linear penalty model and the measures commonly used for evaluating the quality of the dose distribution is weak. This implies that even if the model is solved to optimality there is no guarantee that the generated plan is optimal with respect to clinically relevant objectives, or even near-optimal. We have therefore constructed a new model for optimizing the dwelling time pattern. This model approximates the quality measures by the concept conditional value-at-risk, and we show that the relationship between our new model and the quality measures is strong. Furthermore, the new model generates dwelling time patterns that yield high-quality dose distributions. Combining optimization of the dwelling time pattern with optimization of the catheter positioning yields a problem for which it is rarely possible to find a proven optimal solution within a reasonable time frame. We have therefore developed a variable neighbourhood search heuristic that outperforms a state-of-the-art optimization software (CPLEX). We have also developed a tailored branch-and-bound algorithm that is better at improving the dual bound than a general branch-and-bound algorithm. This is a step towards the development of a method that can find proven optimal solutions to the combined problem within a reasonable time frame.

HDR images have much wider range of luminance values, than photographs created and displayed in a standard 24-bit format. There are several ways to create images with high dynamic range, but this diploma thesis focuses just on one of them, and it is the method of composing out of series of standard photographs. The goal of the first part of the text consists of studying, understanding and eventually writing down the basic terms and knowledge in the subject of image composition and other processes, necessary to create HDR photographs. Next the procedure of creating images with high dynamic range, processing and converting them into viewable form, is described. The following chapter contains the design of the application, which creates this kind of photographs, and which is smoothly changing into its actual implementation afterwards. The process of experimenting and its results are presented and discussed firstly in their own chapter and secondly in the attachment. The conclusion contains the summary of the work and the options of possible expansion.

CVD is a multifactorial condition, and a various lipids and lipoproteins in the plasma are involved in the development of CVD. It has been suggested that HDLs have an inverse association with the risk of CVD. A high sugar intake (especially fructose and sucrose) was found to associate with a low HDL-C level and increased risk of CVD. However, the effect of dietary sugar on HDL kinetics is unclear. An insight of HDL subclass kinetics may provide a better understanding of the whole dynamic of HDL metabolism. Methods: Two studies were undertaken: 1) A controlled, randomized crossover dietary intervention study was carried out in 6 overweight middle-aged men. Subjects underwent two 12-week dietary interventions with high and low non-milk extrinsic sugar diets. Total HDL kinetics was measured using a primed constant intravenous infusion of [1-13C] leucine for 10 hours. 2) A HDL subclass kinetic study was carried out in 6 healthy subjects (3 males and 3 females). An intravenous bolus injection of [1-13C] leucine was applied to measure HDL subclass kinetics. Blood samples were taken during a 10-hour study and the following 2 weeks. Total HDL, HDL2 and HDL3 were separated from the plasma by ultracentrifugation, and αHDL and preβHDL were isolated by agarose gel electrophoresis. ApoA-I in HDL fractions was separated by SDS-PAGE. After purification, hydrolysis and derivatization, the isotopic enrichment of apoA-I in HDL was measured by GC-MS and apoA-I fractional catabolic rate (FCR) and production rate (PR) was calculated for each subclass and total HDL. Results: In the dietary intervention study, the FCR of total HDL apoA-I on the high and low sugar diet (0.20 ± 0.02 and 0.18 ± 0.02 pools/day) was similar, as was the PR (7.33 ± 0.66 and 6.05 ± 0.72 mg/kg/day respectively). In the HDL subclass study, the concentration of αHDL apoA-I (0.97 ± 0.05 g/L) was significantly higher than that of preβHDL apoA-I (0.15 ± 0.03 g/L) (p<0.001). The FCR of αHDL and preβHDL apoA-I was 0.10 ± 0.02 and 0.13 ± 0.04 pools/day, and the PR of αHDL and preβHDL apoA-I was 3.94 ± 0.73 and 0.67 ± 0.12 mg/kg/day respectively. The concentration of HDL3 apoA-I (0.68 ± 0.04 g/L) was significantly higher than that of HDL2 apoA-I (0.23 ± 0.06 g/L) (p=0.002). The FCR of HDL2 and HDL3 apoA-I was 0.15 ± 0.02 pools/day for both, and PR of HDL2 and HDL3 apoA-I was 1.35 ± 0.35 2 and 3.81 ± 0.51 mg/kg/day respectively. A significant difference was observed between αHDL and preβHDL apoA-I PR (p=0.010), and between HDL2 and HDL3 apoA-I PR (p=0.030) in the whole group. The concentration of HDL2 apoA-I was higher in women (0.32 ± 0.08 g/L) than men (0.13 ± 0.02 g/L) though the difference was not significant. HDL2 apoA-I PR was significantly higher in women than men (p=0.017). Conclusion: The high and low sugar diet did not affect HDL metabolism in overweight men. The higher apoA-I concentration of αHDL and HDL3 might be due to the higher apoA-I PR of αHDL and HDL3 compared to preβHDL and HDL2 respectively in healthy subjects. The higher level of HDL2 apoA-I in female than male subjects might be due to the higher PR of HDL2 apoA-I in women.

Abstract:

Today’s electronics in aviation (avionics) are more complex than ever before. With higher requirements on safety and reliability and with new SoC (System on Chip) technology, the validation and verification of designs meet new challenges. In commercial and military aircraft there are many safety-critical systems that need to be reliable. The consequences of a failure of a safety-critical system onboard a civil or military aircraft are immeasurably more serious than a glitch or a bit-flip in a consumer appliance or Internet service delivery. If possible hazards are found early in the design process, a lot of work can be saved later on. Certain structures in the code are prone to produce glitchy logic and timing problems and should be avoided. This thesis will strengthen Saab Avitronics knowledge of adaptable rule checking tools for HDL, with a market analysis of the tools available. Moreover will it evaluate two of the most suitable tools and finally it will describe some of the design issues that exist when coding safety-critical systems. Finally it is concluded that the introduction of static rule checking tools will help the validator to find dangerous constructs in the code. However, it will not be possible to fully automate rule checking for safety-critical systems, because of the high requirements on reliability.

Abstract:
Advances in digital camera technology have led to the development of image sensors that are capable of capturing High Dynamic Range (HDR) images. Although this has enabled the capture of greater depths of colour and illumination, there remain problems with regards to transmitting and displaying the HDR image data. Current consumer level displays are designed to only show images with a depth of 8-bits per pixel per channel. Typical HDR images can be 10-bits per pixel per channel and upwards, leading to the first problem, how to display HDR images on Standard Dynamic Range (SDR) displays. This is linked to a further problem, that of transmitting the HDR data to the SDR devices, due to the fact that most state-of-the-art image and video coding standards deal with only SDR data. Further, as with most technologies of this kind, current HDR displays are extremely expensive. Furthermore, media broadcast organisations have invested significant sums of money into their current architecture and are unwilling to completely change their systems at further cost.

Abstract:

Layered double hydroxides (LDHs) can be used to modify or incorporate characteristics into a variety of thermoplastic or thermoset polymers. The present work aims to synthesize and characterize Mg:Al LDHs intercalated with glycinate, alaninate and dodecyl sulfate and to use them in the formulation of bi-component LDH/epoxy nanocomposites, with distinct LDH content, obtained by casting, and tricomponent LDH/epoxy/glass fiber composites molded by RTM. The LDH was synthesized, using the coprecipitation method, and incorporated into epoxy with the aid of solvents and ultrasonication. For that, acetone, chloroform and DMF solvents were evaluated, and DMF yielded the best performance as dispersing agent. The obtained composites and nanocomposites were evaluated regarding the quality of the LDH dispersion in the matrix, their flame resistance characteristics (horizontal and vertical testing), thermal stability, mechanical and dynamic-mechanical properties. The incorporation of LDH caused an increase in thermal stability of the composites and all samples containing LDH showed self-extinguishing behavior in the vertical burning test, and a large decrease in the burning rate was found compared to neat epoxy. The use of LDH did not significantly alter the mechanical and dynamic-mechanical properties of the composites, which was only achieved by using a glass fiber reinforcement.

Abstract:

This report is about how HDR (HighDynamicRange) can be created and used in combination with Tone mapping. This work has been carried out together with Kapsch TrafficCom AB in Jönköping. The objective of this project is to: Evaluate and investigate the effects given to pictures by HDR and tone mapping. Evaluate if the technology may lead to improvements in Kapsch’s systems. To construct a program which is able to handle some form of tone mapping or HDR-algorithm. These questions will be answered in this report: What kind of effects has HDR and tone mapping-algorithms on pictures? Can the HDR-technology give better data in Kapsch’s systems? The research method used in this report is called action research. This means the authors has investigated the technology by reading different documentations and by testing different algorithms to see what kind of result they give. The report describes some of the tests made to see if the technology is appropriate in Kapsch’s system. There is two smaller reports made by the authors which documenting some of the work. The first report describes the work with different settings for a camera to create pictures with HDR-quality. The second report describes the differences between tone mapping-algorithms and different file format. Both reports are included as appendices to this report. In the program created by the authors some larger library’s with standard functions for opening of JPEG-pictures was used. The chosen library’s was MFC and GDI+. The program is developed for a windows environment and handles functions like sharpening with unsharp mask, colour space conversion and tone mapping.

Abstract: The reason for the hydrotreating of petroleum fractions is to remove sulfur, nitrogen, oxygen and heavy metal, in order to stabilize the fractions by hydrogenation of unsaturated compounds. This process has become extremely important to attend the growing demand of low impurity fuel oils that has been created by society's desire to improve the environment quality and to achieve satisfactory products. In the middle distillates, like diesel, most of the sulfur is present in the form of condensed heterocyclic compounds such as benzothiophenes, dibenzothiophenes and benzonaphthothiophenes. As the feedstocks become heavier, the percentage of condensed sulfur heterocyclics increases faster than simpler compounds such as mercaptans and single-ring heterocyclic, which are relatively easy to desulfurize. In the same way, the fraction of middle distillates has nitrogen in the form of condensed heterocyclics, that requires more severe pressure and temperature conditions to remove that heteroatom ...
