It is not uncommon for a university to house its special collections library in the “old” library building. The character of the architecture and the connection with the university’s past often fit with the mission of collecting and preserving rare books, manuscripts, and university archives. A beautiful old library can inspire both librarians and researchers. However, it also can be the downfall of the very collections we treasure. Many older libraries now housing rare and valuable special collections materials have out-of-date and inadequate environmental control systems, if they have any at all. Abstract:
The concept, typology and historical development of the heritage, the collections in libraries with old documents and the preparation of the National Unified Catalog of printed and facsimiles existing in Argentina prior to the year 1800 are described. Later the concepts are differentiated and, as disciplines, conservation, restoration and preservation throughout history, until the appearance of preventive conservation. Then the ambiguity of definitions for historical or patrimonial libraries is demonstrated, and the age limit for collections and old books. It is important to carry out a diagnosis to know and understand the needs of the collection. And the main risks and factors of deterioration of the documents are analyzed. In addition, there is an approach to the theoretical aspects of the institutional framework and its influence on resources and policies, as well as diagnoses for the preventive conservation of collections. With the help of the proposed model, awareness of the prevention of deterioration of old funds is promoted through the design and implementation of a preventive conservation plan.

In Austria, there are many written documents in arabic script. The reason that they are not known properly is to be found in the lack of resources (personal and financial), ignorance and disinterest. The aim of this work is to find out how to locate these documents systematically and how to make them accessible. For this one has to ask: "Who could have come into contact with people who wrote in Arabic script?" and "Where could the documents and items have ended up?" After archives and museums one has to look especially at monastery libraries and generally collecting libraries (in opposition to public libraries). Flukes and single occurrences can not be excluded. The best is to make the results accessible in a relational SQL database with the trancription system of the Deutsche Morgenländische Gesellschaft.

Abstract:
Studies of the seventeenth century Mexican printed book consider it as an extension of the legacy of the sixteenth century typographic tradition, whose only distinctive characteristics lie in the increase and diversity of printers and in the decrease in the material and artisanal quality of their printed matter. . Both characteristics respond to a greater need for dissemination for the effective communication of the administrative, judicial, religious, political and educational propaganda of the viceroyalty. However, other studies have focused on highlighting specific aspects of the seventeenth century printing press through the analysis of particular works or the study of the production of printers, as is the case of the production of Bernardo Calderón's Widow; However, in general, the history of the Mexican book considers that the seventeenth century print did not present notable variants, except for some insignificant ones such as the decrease in images on the covers, the increase in ornamentation, the reduction of formats and the preference of the vulgar languages for the printing of the works. In this sense, the relevance of the analysis of the 17th century New Hispano prints consists in broadening the understanding of the development of the printing press in Mexico, as well as in providing the distinctive characteristics of the prints of this period.

Abstract:
A study of scholarly communication, based upon written interviews with historians of colonial Brazil located in this country. It investigates the use of digitized rare books for the production of knowledge from 1995 to 2009, which corresponds to the first fifteen years of digitization projects in libraries, both research libraries and others. The goal of the present study was to verify to what extent the digitized rare books on the internet are part of the Historian´s scholarly communication process at the moment in Brazil and a possible impact factor on his research. It investigates the open access to information movement, going back to the seventeenth century, and considers the issue of the so-called "two cultures" in the sciences and the humanities. Responses create a profile of the historians studied, the use of printed and digitized collections, use of technology, aspects of the flow of information during the research process, and their knowledge of the open access movement. Among other findings, results showed that historians of colonial Brazil in this country extensively use technologies and do not feel pressured by them; find more barriers in using printed rare books than digitized rare books on the internet, but they are well aware that the digitized book does not substitute for the original printed copy. Access to digitized rare books was an impact factor on research and results may point to a possible threat to the printed book as the main tool for those historians. The majority is in favor to the Open Access Movement.

(in English): This study focuses on the faculty libraries of the Charles University in Prague. More precisely, it deals with their collections of manuscripts, old and rare books. The introductory chapters are dedicated to theoretical basis of protection and preservation of historical documents. The main body of the thesis is created by an analysis of historical collections in particular libraries. This analysis is based on a questionnaire survey, on study of sources and on a research carried out during an actual visit to these libraries. Each chapter includes a brief history of the faculty library, the origin of the collection, and other important features such as the size of the collection, its thematic focus and especially the details of the way it is stored and available to readers. Another important focus of this study is to express the needs, the aims and experience of these faculty libraries. A more detailed study is dedicated to the library of The Protestant Theological Faculty. It includes a report about my research into the actual physical condition of the collection. The concluding and summarizing part of this thesis consists of thematically structured chapters, diagrams and tables which try to give an overall perspective on the situation. Abstract:
It is estimated that India possesses more than five million manuscripts on varied subjects lying scattered or fragmented in India and foreign collections. This invaluable and unique pool of knowledge is under threat. Recognizing the need to encompass and preserve this knowledge resource and to make these accessible to scholars and researchers, Kala Nidhi Division of Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (IGNCA) initiated a microfilming of manuscripts programme of private and public institutions in 1989. IGNCA has, so far, microfilmed over 250000 manuscripts in 20,600 microfilm rolls, out of that 14,400 rolls have been digitized. National Mission for Manuscripts (NMM) established in February 2003 seeks to unearth and preserve the vast manuscript wealth of India. The digitization of over 25000 manuscripts under NMM, IGNCA and also under project mode by Cultural Informatics Laboratory (CIL), IGNCA makes largest repository of copies of manuscripts at IGNCA. Besides, IGNCA is also having a unique collection of 2500 rare books, about 1,0,5000 slides, 2000 paintings, 3000 photographs, more than 3000 hours of video recordings, art objects, 10 personal collections of eminent scholars such as Dr. Suniti Kumar Chatterjee, Prof. Hazari Prasad Dwivedi, Dr. Kapila Vatsyayan and Prof. Maheswar Neog, photo documentation work on Rock Art, and various museums in India etc. Many of these collections such as rare books, photographs etc are well covered and some are not covered under copyright laws. However, there are issues such as ownership rights, permission rights and access rights etc, which do not allow open access to these collections. As per the existing arrangements, consultation to all collections at IGNCA is allowed to all, 25% copies of the material are also allowed on cost basis. However, to get a copy of the material, user need to approach the concerned library (from where the copies have been obtained) to seek permission. This chapter attempts to describe factors considered as hindrance to providing access to Indian cultural heritage material. Lack of proper policy guidelines especially on copyright issues and intellectual property rights concerning both cultural heritage materials in original as well as in digital form are an obstacle. Open access initiatives worldwide are advocating access to even current information. Cultural heritage belongs to the humanity worldwide, therefore, access should be given to all. These issues, which may not be solved at individual level or institutional level, require debate, deliberations and formulation of policy framework at the highest level.

The initially local microfilming project of rare documents at risk quickly became a project without term and with international visibility. The arrival of the digital imposed the need of a collaboration with different professionals and local institutions to create a methodology for cataloguing and finding aids, using standards, control of vocabulary and terminology and the creation of a database of authority files

Abstract:
This chapter discusses the Nazis' confiscation of Wanda Landowska's musical collection and how it was partly recovered after the war. It recounts Landowska's career before the Germans invaded France in May 1940 and describes her as an internationally renowned harpsichord and piano soloist and an accomplished scholar, writer, teacher, and composer. It also highlights Landowska's extensive music library, which included manuscripts, rare printed music, books, and an impressive antique musical instrument collection. The chapter recounts how the Nazis plundered Landowski's musical treasures in September 1940 after Landowska fled her home and music school at 88 rue de Pontoise, Saint-Leu-la-Forêt. It describes Landowska's library that contained approximately 10,000 objects, which reflected Landowska's intellectual and aesthetic sensibilities, her eclectic interests, and to some extent her heritage.

Abstract:
In the context of current development, while the trend is towards an open access to information, unrestricted by space and time, libraries must adapt to new changes existent in the society of information, in order to meet the needs of its users. Thus, with the development of computer systems, distribution of the networks especially in the universities and companies, and the advent of so many personal computers, libraries have begun to lose their customers. And this is due to the broadening of another branch of the electronic paper: the E-book. E-book or the electronic book has grown rapidly in recent years, especially in areas such as humanities i.e. dictionaries and encyclopaedias. E-book is an item that does not have to be bought, or sought between dusty shelves, and is not the absent book because it was borrowed by someone else. E-book is the book from the computer, within the computer, the book available for an infinite number of readers, the book that can be read easily and that can offer a superior graphic presentation of a classic pattern. E-book is now the way to preserve the oldest books, the best method by which a rare book can be multiplied and not having to be printed. It can be read by an infinite number of people simultaneously considering that it can exist on the computer for each person. In addition, e-book is similar to writing a book, only this time the writing is reduced; it allows a permanent return to the text, the ability to correct it, making ads, and restoring it without affecting the text or its layout. Thus, compared to the usual manuscripts with additions and doodles in the margins, an e-book will look cleaner and will have an arranged text. Prices for production of an e-book are much lower than the production of a book; including the investment that one author will have to do will be much smaller. And this is due to the diminishing of the waste paper and nerves, in case of returning to the text, being only necessary the pressing a few keys.
