Abstract:
Although Bifidobacterium bifidum expresses lactase activity, no clinical trials have determined its impact on lactose-intolerant subjects. This study evaluated whether acute and chronic ingestion of ice creams containing B. bifidum 900791 at high (107 CFU/g) or low (105 CFU/g) concentrations improved lactose tolerance in hypolactasic subjects. Fifty subjects were selected based on a positive lactose (20 g) hydrogen breath test (HBT0) and the presence of digestive symptoms. The recruited subjects were required to perform breath tests after the acute ingestion of: (1) ice cream containing 20 g of lactose without a probiotic (HBT1); (2) the same ice cream, accompanied by a lactase tablet (HBT2); (3) the same ice cream containing the low or high dose of probiotic (HBT3-LD and HBT3-HD); and (4) after the chronic consumption of the ice cream without (placebo) or with the low concentration of probiotic for 1 month (HBT4). Significant decreases in H2 excretion during HBT2 and HBT3-HD as well as digestive symptoms during HBT2, HBT3-HD and HBT3-LD were observed compared to HBT0 and HBT1, while the orocecal transit time increased. Chronic consumption of the probiotic ice cream did not enhance lactose tolerance compared to the placebo. These results suggest that the acute ingestion of ice cream containing high or low concentrations of B. bifidum 900791 improves lactose tolerance in hypolactasic subjects.

Red blood cell indices values were lower compared with control subjects, nature has it that SCD patients in the steady state have adapted their body system to this anaemic state and live healthy. Blood transfusion does not significantly increase the seroprevalence of transfusion transmissible infections in our clinically stable SCD participants.

Abstract:
Det finns idag inga krav på att lärare ska läsa kurser inom genus eller sex- och samlevnad för att få undervisa i ämnet. Detta kan bli problematiskt för hbtq-personer om lärare utgår ifrån toleranspedagogik som inte inkluderar hbtq-personer i normen. Lärare som istället använder normkritisk pedagogik/queerpedagogik ökar hbtq-perspektivet i undervisningen. Syftet med detta arbete var att öka förståelsen om hur hbtq-perspektiv inkluderas i sex- och samlevnadsundervisningen. Detta undersöktes med en internetbaserad enkät som skickades ut på hbtq-communitys. 66 respondenter besvarade frågan om i vilken utsträckning unga (16-25 år) hbtq-personer uppger att undervisningen inkluderar ett hbtq-perspektiv. Majoriteten av respondenterna uppgav att läraren inte diskuterade eller gjorde övningar där hbtq-perspektiv inkluderades. En majoritet av respondenterna uppgav också att läraren pratade om hbtq-personer som en separat grupp istället för att inkludera dem i normen. Därmed anses sex- och samlevnadsundervisningen bristfällig.

Abstract:
This essay seeks to explore how five public libraries in Stockholm have chosen to organize the LGBTQ classified literature in the physical library. The questions discussed in this essay are the following: - What factors affected the librarian’s decisions when deciding how to place the LGBTQ literature? - What response have the librarians received from library users regarding the physical organization? - What changes would the librarians like to see in the future in regards to the LGBTQ literature and the overall work toward the LGBTQ community? Semi-structured interviews with seven librarians were conducted and analyzed from a queer theory perspective on knowledge-organization. The results showed that the libraries that used dedicated shelves for the LGBTQ classified literature did so in order to make it easier for its users to find the literature on their own. They were also used to send out a signal regarding the libraries positive attitudes towards the LGBTQ community. Libraries who did not use dedicated shelves argued that the shelves could create an uncomfortable situation for library users and create a symbolic separation between the LGBTQ community and the rest of society. The shelves could also send out the wrong signal that LGBTQ classified literature only targets LGBTQ individuals. Concluding analysis showed that the shelves may have an including as well as an excluding effect. As for the future some librarians expressed a desire to fight heteronormativity and make the LGBTQ community and literature a more natural part of the library work and the library collections.

Abstract:
Syftet har varit att synliggöra och analysera inkludering och exkludering inom den svenska hbtq-rörelsen, samt att fördjupa förståelsen för konflikterna inom rörelsen. Genom diskursteoretisk analys av massmedias beskrivning av aktioner under 2012 har följande resultat uppnåtts; inom rörelsen framkommer två diskurser, med olika syn på vilka politiska frågor rörelsen ska fokusera på. Dessa kallas i uppsatsen den endimensionella och den flerdimensionella diskursen. Den endimensionella vill återgå till en mer "klassisk" homokamp, medan den flerdimensionella har ett mer intersektionellt synsätt och vill bredda det politiska spektrumet. Diskurserna har även olika syn på vilka politiska metoder som är mest effektiva samt skiljer sig åt i sitt förhållningssätt till queerbegreppet. Enligt min analys diskuterades vad som beskrevs som en splittring inom rörelsen under denna tidsperiod på ett väldigt specifikt sätt, där begreppet extremism var centralt.

Abstract:
I uppsatsen görs en kritisk diskursanalys ur ett hbtq-perspektiv av Sverigedemokraternas styrdokument, den partianknutna tidningen SD-Kuriren och några andra relevanta texter. Materialet har delats in i tre tidsperioder, 1989-1995, 1996-2002 och 2003-2015 och frågorna som ställs till materialet handlar om vilka problem, orsaker till problem och lösningar på problem som går att identifiera som centrala i de studerade texterna. De identifierade problemen under de olika perioderna är ”den låga nativiteten”, ”osundheten” och ”den hotade kärnfamiljen; samt ”den hotade kärnfamiljen och den därmed hotade nationen”. Alla dessa problem kan kopplas ihop med Sverigedemokraternas hbtq-politik. I ett andra steg i uppsatsen görs en kvantitativ studie över frekvensen av ett antal ur det studerade perspektivet centrala ord i partiets styrdokument och hur användningen av dessa ord varierar över tid. De studerade orden är sund, familj, naturlig, nation, moral, folk och nativitet. Ett par av resultaten är att användningen av ordet ”nation” är som mest frekvent i det senaste styrdokumentet, medan ordet ”sund” var mest vanligt under den mittersta av de studerade perioderna. I analysens sista del görs utblickar mot Sverigedemokraternas agerande på det hbtq-politiska området, under de senaste åren. Med hjälp av begreppen heteronormativitet, homonormativitet och homonationalism görs avslutningsvis ytterligare en läsning av texterna där exempel på alla dessa företeelser går att identifiera i materialet.

Abstract:
Our thesis is an analysis of four librarians view on LGBTQ and which implications these views have on the practical work with LGBTQ issues in the public library. The three ideal types we can identify are the excluding, the including, and the normcritical approach. We also want to know if the four librarians’ standpoints can be connected to the above mentioned ideal types. We can see that the area where the implementations of the three ideal types are most visible is the way LGBTQ material is displayed in the library space. An example of this is whether the library chooses to have a special LGBTQ shelf or not. Public libraries in Sweden are supposed to serve all patrons. In order to do so it is critical for the users who define themselves as LGBTQ to be able to find literature that reflect their identity. Novels with a LGBTQ-theme are hard to find in public libraries. We have come to the conclusion that education of the staff, whether longer or shorter, can make big difference in the library.

Abstract:
Syftet med uppsatsen är att öka kunskapen om hur unga transpersoner upplever bemötandet vid hbtq-certifierade och hbtq-diplomerade ungdomsmottagningar. Transpersoner har upplevt att personal brister i sitt bemötande mot dem, särskilt i vården och även i verksamheter som har genomgått en hbtq-certifiering. Tidigare forskning, både nationellt och internationellt, har visat på att transpersoner har upplevt diskriminering och ifrågasättande i kontakt med vården och andra verksamheter inom socialt arbete. Dessutom har personal inte haft kunskap i hbtq-frågor och i vissa fall har transpersonerna själva behövt undervisa dem. Det här bristande bemötandet har lett till att transpersoner har förlorat förtroendet till vården och vågar därför inte söka hjälp. Dessa studier har även visat exempel på transpersoner som upplevt ett bra bemötande av personal som respekterat och accepterat deras könsidentitet. Det här är en kvalitativ studie som genomförts via semistrukturerade intervjuer per telefon med sex personer som identifierar sig som transpersoner, men har olika definitioner av sin könsidentitet. De har varit i kontakt med en hbtq-certifierad eller hbtq-diplomerad ungdomsmottagning nyligen eller flera år innan den här studien genomfördes. Den här studien har gjorts med induktiv metod då en teori har valts ut utifrån datamaterialet. Den teorin som har valts ut är erkännandeteorin, som handlar om att bli erkänd för sin identitet eller att bli moralisk kränkt. Slutsatsen är att unga transpersoner har olika upplevelser av bemötande vid hbtq-certifierade och hbtq-diplomerade ungdomsmottagningar. De flesta har fått ett bra bemötande då personal har visat omtanke, respekt, acceptans och förståelse för transpersoners könsidentitet. Några av dem har även upplevt brister i bemötandet då personal har antagit deras kön, felkönat och ifrågasatt. Viss personal har saknat kunskap i transfrågor men några få av dem har ändå behandlat unga transpersoner med respekt. Det verkar som att unga transpersoner anser att det är viktigast att personal behandlar dem med respekt, det vill säga deras värderingar är viktigare än kunskap.
The aim of this study is to increase knowledge about how young transgender people experience the treatment at youth guidance centers which have a lgbtq-certification. Because in Sweden transgender people have bad experience with the treatment from the staff, especially in health care centers such as the youth guidance center, and even at centers which have a lgbtq-certification. Previous research in, both Sweden and other countries, show that transgender people, in contact with the health care and other social work centers, have experienced discrimination, questioning and lack of knowledge which on these occasions they needed to teach the staff about lgbtq-issues. Because of this kind of bad treatment transgender people have lost trust in health care centers and don’t dare to seek help. These studies have even shown that other transgender people have experienced good treatment when the staff have respected them and accepted their gender identity. This is a qualitative study, based on semi-structured interviews that have been made through the phone with six persons who identify as transgender but have different definitions about their gender identity. They have been in contact with youth guidance centers which have a lgbtq-certification one or several years before this study was done. This study has been made with inductive method where a theory has been chosen from the data. The theory which has been chosen is recognition, which is about when an individual’s identity is being recognized or morally hurt. The conclusion is that young transgender people have different experiences of treatment at the youth guidance centers. Many of them have experienced a good treatment where the staff have shown concern, respect, acceptance and understanding for their gender identity. Some of them have experienced bad treatment where the staff have presumed their gender, misgendering and questioning. Some staff have lack of knowledge in trans-issues but some of them have treated the young transgender people with respect. It seems that the most important thing for transgender people is that the staff treat them with respect, more based upon their values rather than their knowledge.

Abstract:
Within this essay a study is made of an LGBTQ-orientated Christian service in Stockholm called Queer Service. The following questions seek to be answered: What reasons does an individual set for his/hers participation in Queer Service? Which aspects of a queer service highlight the participants as important to them? As a method to answer these questions, the author has observed a number of queer church services in autumn of 2012. Moreover communication within the group of the assembly on the social media page Facebook has been followed and five individuals from the Queer Service congregation have been interviewed. As a background to the study, the European religious climate seen from Grace Davies eyes is depicted.  The reader also learns of how the Swedish church has handled questions about homosexuality and bisexuality and what liberation theology is. An (incomplete) section on other existing services with LGBTQ orientation in Sweden and the USA has been added as well as background information on Queer Service. The results from the gathering of material and the analysis of it show that the interviewees perceive themselves in need of a safe place free of harassment or suspicion linked to sexual orientation or gender identity. Several interviewees also experienced a conflict between Christian faith and an LGBTQ personality - a conflict the service could help solve. Participation in the service was also motivated as a way to resist structures that confirmed heterosexuality as a norm. Another aspect important to the interviewees is Queer Service's emphasis on internal authority and its lack of a clear hierarchy.

Landstinget Västmanland genomför regelbundet enkätundersökningen Liv & hälsa ung Västerås som kartlägger hälsan bland ungdomar i årskurs nio i grundskolan och årskurs två i gymnasiet. Enkätundersökningen ska nästa gång genomföras i januari-februari år 2017 och landstinget vill ha underlag för hur de eventuellt kan utveckla sin undersökning för att unga hbtq [homosexuella, bisexuella, transpersoner, queera]-personer ska känna sig synliggjorda i den. Därför har syftet varit att undersöka hur unga hbtq-personer upplever undersökningen Liv & hälsa ung Västerås samt hur de upplever att den kan utvecklas. Detta har gjorts genom en kvalitativ undersökning som baseras på semistrukturerade intervjuer. Personerna som intervjuades var unga hbtq-personer under 26 år. Datamaterialet analyserades med stöd av manifest innehållsanalys. Resultatet av intervjuerna uppdagade att personerna inte kände sig representerade i enkätundersökningen då den upplevdes som begränsande och normativ avseende frågor och svarsmöjligheter. Utvecklingsmöjligheterna var att undersökningen kan bli mer inkluderande och att normmedvetenheten bör öka vilket kan ske genom förtydligande kring vilken definition som används på begrepp som samlag. Slutligen, om dessa förändringar genomförs skulle hbtq-ungdomarnas hälsa stärkas då målet att identifiera och uttrycka sig som de vill, kan uppnås. Som ökar möjligheterna till en god hälsa på lika villkor då rätt hälsoinsatser kan prioriteras när unga hbtq-personers förutsättningar framkommer.
The County Council of Västmanland regularly conducts the survey Liv & hälsa ung Västerås, which investigates the health of young people in the ninth grade in elementary school and the second grade in high school. The next survey will be conducted in January and February 2017. The County Council want to develop the questionnaire to raise the awareness of conditions affecting young lgbtq [lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer] –persons, and that is why these questions are now in focus. Therefore, the aim has been to investigate how young lgbtq-people experience the questionnaire Liv & hälsa ung Västerås and how they perceive that it can be developed. To answer the purpose, a qualitative study has been conducted and based on semi-structured interviews. The people interviewed are young lgbtq-people under the age of 26. Data were analyzed with a manifest content analysis. The result of the interviews revealed that people did not feel represented in the survey, as the questions and answers was perceived as restrictive and prescriptive. The development potential was that the questionnaire could be more inclusive, and that there is need for further clarification of certain terms (e.g. sexual intercourse). Finally, if these changes can be proceeded, the health of young lgbtq-people can be strengthened. If they can identify and express themselves as they wish, an improved access to high quality care, on equal terms, can be achieved. The right health interventions can be implemented and become a priority when the health conditions are visible to the county.

Abstract:
Vår studie handlar om hur pedagoger i förskolan resonerar angående HBTQ-certifieringens eventuella plats i förskolan. Studien bygger på tankar från pedagoger vid en certifierad förskola och vid två icke certifierade förskolor som deltagit i fokusgrupper där pedagogerna diskuterat kring hur de tänker angående HBTQ-certifieringen i förskolan samt normkritiskt arbete och kunskapen inom HBTQ-frågor. Studiens syfte är att belysa vilka aspekter som pedagoger anser vara viktiga att resonera kring gällande HBTQ-certifiering, normer, normkritiskt arbete och familjekonstellationer i förskolan. I kapitlet centrala begrepp redogörs förklaringar av följande begrepp: HBTQ-begrepp, normer och normkritik, genus och kön, heteronormen, regnbågsfamiljer, queerbegreppet och toleransbegreppet. Här ges en beskrivning av dessa begrepp som genomsyrar studien och ger en grundläggande förståelse. Tidigare forskning innehåller forskning om HBTQ-certifikatet, HBTQ-historia, Internationell forskning om HBTQ, normer och normkritiskt arbete i förskolan, diskriminering och kränkande behandling samt arbete för diskriminering och kränkande behandling och jämställdhetsarbete. I analysen redogörs för vårt viktigaste empiriska material där man kan följa pedagogernas resonemang och diskussion från fokusgrupperna. Ämnena vi fokuserar på är HBTQ-certifieringen, normkritiskt arbete i förskolan och kunskap. Vi bidrar med en analys av materialet och de resultat som vi kommer fram till. Resultatets viktigaste poäng är den tydliga kunskapsbristen bland pedagogerna i förskolan. Vi avslutar med en diskussion kring våra slutsatser och förslag på vidare forskning inom ämnet.

Abstract:
We have used the heterojunction bipolar transistor (HBT) as the device technology to perform the electronic functions in monolithically integrated photoreceivers. Our approach has been motivated by the fact that HBTs have already demonstrated high-speed performance, even with relaxed design rules, and by noise analysis, which suggests that bipolar transistor-based preamplifiers will have sensitivities favorable for optical communication systems. We will present our results of p-i-n photodetectors integrated with HBT-based preamplifiers realized in the InP/InGaAs material system. Sensitivity measurements at high bit rates confirm that the performance of these monolithic receivers is close to that of the best p-i-n hybrid receivers.

Abstract:
Integrated InP heterojunction bipolar transistors (HBTs) are used as a high-speed switch in high-power radio frequency (RF) circuits for microwave wireless communications. The power dissipation of each of these devices often reaches as high as 1 W, raising concerns for their thermal reliability. The relatively poor thermal conductivity of InP prohibits effective spreading of heat within the device substrate. To address this problem, this work proposes a novel microfluidic device called the “micro thermosyphon” for cooling the InP-based microwave circuits. This paper describes the concept of the micro thermosyphon and presents its design and analysis, accounting for the large surface tension effect of the working fluid at the micrometer scale. Our simulation suggests that the proposed device could remove a heat flux density as large as 25 W/cm2 from a high-power InP HBT circuit while maintaining the circuit temperature lower than 100 °C. The micro thermosyphon is a fully passive cooling device suited for achieving effective on-chip cooling without requiring any drive power. Experimental work is currently being under way to validate the device performance.

Abstract:
Low-temperature (15 K) photoluminescence (PL) in molecular-beam epitaxy-grown AlGaAs/GaAs heterojunction bipolar transistors (HBTs) has been studied. Both cw and pulsed lasers were used as excitation sources. These HBT samples are heavily doped with Si and Be in the n+-GaAs and p+-GaAs layers, respectively. The origin of each PL signal is identified by removing each layer. Three PL peaks from the n-AlGaAs layer were observed. We found a direct correlation between height of PL peaks in the n-AlGaAs layer and device performance (current gain). We have also studied the correlation between PL in the n-AlGaAs layer and the current gain and Be redistribution from the p+-GaAs base layer into emitter layers while these layers were being grown. Poor current gain was observed as the Be diffusion depth into the emitter layers became large. The Be diffusion depth was measured by means of secondary ion mass spectroscopy. A sharp Be-related peak in the PL spectra from the n-AlGaAs layer clearly indicates Be diffusion into the emitter layers.

Millimeter waves have been generated by driving HBTs with both mode locked and cw semiconductor lasers. The mode locked diode lasers incorporated a saturable absorber section and produced <2.5 ps pulses at 65.12 GHz. Millimeter waves generated in the high frequency HBTs were radiated into free space by using integrated printed circuit device/antenna circuits. In subsequent experiments, cw optical mixing techniques were also used to generate millimeter waves. Here, single frequency, stabilized semiconductor lasers operating at both 850 nm and 1.3 μm were mixed in the active regions of the HBTs. These long wavelength lasers were chosen because they are optimally absorbed in the active regions of the devices and therefore provided the highest optical-to-millimeter-wave conversion efficiencies. In order to optimize the performance and configuration of these new millimeter wave sources, we also incorporated them on wafer optical feeds by using polyimide guides deposited with a direct laser writing technique. This approach permits a high degree of fan-out and the use of multiple radiating elements. These experiments demonstrate a new architecture to form compact, all-solid-state sources of millimeter waves that use wafer scale optical interconnections to form novel coherent arrays.

Abstract The III-V integrated-circuits industry makes use of measured and modeled thermal impedances to model and to optimize transistor performance and to design circuits. In field effect transistors (FETs), heat is generated in a very small volume on the drain side of the gate, but models assume that it is generated in wide rectangular bars on the surface of the device. We describe electrical techniques for measuring the thermal impedances in FETs and in heterojunction bipolar transistors (HBTs). In HBTs the maximum power densities are limited by self heating, and we describe experimental studies of thermal shunt designs that reduce the thermal impedances.

The thermal conductance at solid-solid interfaces is becoming increasingly important in thermal considerations dealing with devices on nanometer length scales. Specifically, interdiffusion or mixing around the interface, which is generally ignored, must be taken into account when the characteristic lengths of the devices are on the order of the thickness of this mixing region. To study the effect of this interfacial mixing on thermal conductance, a series of Cr films are grown on Si substrates subject to various deposition conditions to control the growth around the Cr/Si boundary. The Cr/Si interfaces are characterized with auger electron spectroscopy depth profiling. The thermal boundary conductance (hBD) is measured with the transient thermoreflectance technique. Values of hBD are found to vary with both the thickness of the mixing region and the rate of compositional change in the mixing region. The effects of the varying mixing regions in each sample on hBD are discussed and the results are compared to the diffuse mismatch model.

In this work, we investigate vascular therapy induced regional variations in vascularization and oxygenation using Ultrasound-guided photoacoustic imaging (US-PAI). The 3D images were fluence compensated and a custom regional segmentation algorithm was applied to the volumetric HbT images to segment the tumor volume into areas of high vascular density and low vascular density. Regionally evaluating the changes in blood oxygenation (StO2) and HbT reveals that sunitinib is preferentially targeting areas of low vascular density while PDT is agnostic of vascular density when administered at optimal dose.

Abstract:
Objectives: The Israeli work plan regarding HBTM included: (a) producing a better diagnostic method; (b) following infestations during the season and evaluating damage to resistant bees and, (c) controlling HBTM by conventional means under local conditions. For varroa our plans to try novel control (e.g. oil novel control (e.g. oil patties & essential oils) were initially delayed by very low pest populations, then disrupted by the emergence of fluvalinate resistance. We monitored the spread of resistance to understand it better, and analyzed an underlying biochemical resistance mechanism in varroa. The US work plan focused on novel management methods for both mites with an emphasis on reducing use of traditional insecticides due to resistance and contamination issues. Objectives were: (a) evaluating plant essential oils for varroa control; (b) exploring the vulnerability of varroa to desiccation for their management; and (c) looking for biological variation in HBTM that could explain virulence variability between colonies. Although the initial PI at the USDA Beltsville Bee Lab, W.A. Bruce, retired during the project we made significant strides especially on varroa water balance. Subcontracts were performed by Yoder (Illinois College) on varroa water balance and DeGrandi-Hoffman (USDA) who evaluated plant essential oils for their potential to control varroa. We devised an IPM strategy for mite control i the U.S. Background: Mites that parasitize honey bees are a global problem. They are threatening the survival of managed and feral bees, the well-being of commercial/hobby beekeeping, and due to pollination, the future of some agricultural commodities is threatened. Specific economic consequences of these mites are that: (a) apiculture/breeder business are failing; (b) fewer colonies exist; (c) demand and cost for hive leasing are growing; (d) incidences of bee pathogens are increasing; and, (e) there are ore problems with commercial-reared bees. As a reflection of the continued significance f bee mites, a mite book is now in press (Webster & delaplane, 2000); and the 2nd International Conference on Africanized Honey Bees and Bee Mites is scheduled (April, 2000, Arizona). The first such conference was at OSU (1987, GRN was co-organizer). The major challenge is controlling two very different mites within a colony while not adversely impacting the hive. Colony management practices vary, as do the laws dictating acaricide use. Our basic postulates were that: (a) both mites are of economic importance with moderate to high infestations but not at low rates and, (b) once established they will not be eradicated. A novel strategy was devised that deals with the pests concomitantly by maintaining populations at low levels, without unnecessary recourse to synthetic acaricides. Major Conclusions, Solutions, Achievements: A major recent revelation is that there are several species of "Varroa jacobsoni" (Anderson & Trueman 1999). Work on control, resistance, population dynamics, and virulence awaits knowing whether this is a problem. In the U.S. there was no difference between varroa from three locales in terms of water balance parameters (AZ, MN & PA), which bodes well for our work to date. Winter varroa (U.S.) were more prone to desiccation than during other seasons. Varroa sensitivity to desiccation has important implications for improving IPM. Several botanicals showed some promise for varroa control (thymol & origanum). Unfortunately there is varroa resistance to Apistan in Israel but a resistance mechanism was detected for the first time. The Israel team also has a new method for HBTM diagnosis. Annual tracheal mite population trends in Israel were characterized, which will help in targeting treatment. Effects of HBTM on honey yields were shown. HBTM control by Amitraz was demonstrated for at least 6 months. Showing partial resistance by Buckfast bees to HBTM will be an important IPM tactic in Israel and U.S.
