Abstract:
Established under the antebellum leadership of Joseph Henry and Spencer Baird, the respect given the Smithsonian Institution had far-reaching effects on budding geological careers and the conservation and curation of fossils at national and state levels. Specifically, F. V. Hayden received sufficient perceived encouragement in his geological and natural history endeavors to prevail under no less than hardship conditions. Consequently, Hayden triumphed on his return from the field in 1856, with specimens that would quickly alter his immediate destiny and that of F. B. Meek. The five documents accepted for publication in 1856 by the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia produced not only a large number of new species, but Hayden’s northern Great Plains stratigraphy and a biostratigraphic/biochronologic catalog of species original to western studies. Others were now also repeatedly citing Hayden with Meek for non-molluscan specimens based on his collections, with new species named in his honor. The nature of western geological exploration changed because of Hayden’s successful employment as geologist and naturalist to the G. K. Warren and W. F. Raynolds Missouri and Yellowstone expeditions. Onsite, ‘fact-based’ mapping with fossils in stratigraphic sections were arguably now required. No more qualified or experienced individual left the western territories as the Civil War commenced. Meek’s deathbed monograph provided a redescription and the first figures of Meek and Hayden 1856 taxa. Although there are reasons suggested herein, a conundrum exists as to why Meek replaced many 1856 ‘types’ with different specimens, sometimes from different localities. The specimens used in the 1856 Meek and Hayden papers were first unpacked for study by Meek and Hayden in Albany. Shipment of fossils from field to museum, however, was not without peril. The presumption is that the specimens accompanied Meek when he moved to Washington in 1858. A National Museum sponsored and implemented program fostered an ever-expanding ‘duplicate’ distribution of specimens to national and international institutions. Henry and Baird were dedicated to this program. Starting in 1861, surplus fossil invertebrates were removed from National Museum holdings. Many thousands of specimens were transferred, with nearly one thousand specimens documented in a single shipment to one institution. How much of the Hayden collection was affected and how many types were redistributed is as of yet unknown. The remaining Hayden collection in the National Museum is pared-down to type and figured specimens. Hayden’s ‘buckets’ of specimens are being, in some cases, slowly virtually repatriated.

Abstract:
The poetry of Robert Hayden explores the process of individual and collective social and spiritual transformation in a variety of’ contexts, including contemporary culture, the Bahá’í Faith, black history, art, literature, nature, disease, and suffering. In developing his themes and images, Hayden ‘works through many of the central issues and events shaping the modern world and moves towards a “re-centering” or re-focusing of vision around a spiritual reality. A close reading of a number of’ Hayden’s poems, including “Words in the Mourning Time,” “The Broken Dark,” “From the Corpse Woodpiles, from the Ashes,” “Middle Passage,” “Runagate, Runagate,” “The Dream (1863),” “El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz,” “The Night-Blooming Cereus,” and “For a Young Artist” reveals the poet’s concentration on this process of change and growth. In an age that champions despair and unbelief, Hayden’s poems are records of a journey “from Can’t to Can,” from grief to hope, from death to life, from suffering to comfort, from brokenness to wholeness, from the earthbound state to flight. True to his vision of art as “ultimately religious in the broadest sense of the term,” Hayden has created a body of work that eloquently depicts the struggles and achievements of the human spirit.

Abstract:
In his article, "Schindler's Fate: Genocide, Ethnic Cleansing, and Population Transfers," Robert Hayden combines comparative history, political commentary, and amoral realism. In the process, he presents a number of arguments with which it is difficult to disagree, but also many that are provocative and, indeed, offensive. Because Hayden makes so many arguments in this piece (both primary, secondary, and parenthetical; explicit and implicit; open and disguised) my critique will not follow the organization of his paper. Rather, it will challenge Hayden's article on three counts: 1) its factual accuracy; 2) its lack of reference to existing literature on the topic; and 3) the logic, validity, and moral consequences of its arguments.

Abstract:

________________________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT
The Dissertation presented investigated the roles that knowledge produced by historians can exercise according to the historian and theoretical literature of historiography and Hayden White. The first chapter briefly outlines his theory of historiographic speech, emphasizing aspects relevant to understand the object of this work. The second chapter discusses the functions that should be avoided by historiography. The third presents the functions that historiography can exercise, listing them on the theory of speech historiographic (chap. 1) and the cognitive functions of the story refuted by White (chap. 2). In the last section, sought summed up what has been previously exposed and questioned some aspects of the proposal whiteana. From this, the main idea is to argue in favour of limiting epistemic the discourse produced by historians, which would, in turn, use it, certain ways, to help the men of this in the resolution of their problems. Thus, what would the historiography assert itself in the past with a view to the present and play such a role would be or what their condition cognitively limited.

Abstract:
Since the end of Second World War, a great acceleration in the scope of science and technique caused significant changes in all the other scopes of society. These changes, which in occidental world begun in 1945, were so important that marked the beginning of a new era, the postmodernity. In that context, scientific knowledge and, in a specific way, the historical knowledge, were modified. And what did 'make history' become in postmodernity? In the dialog between present time and nowadays historiography, our main study object is Hayden White, the historian that explores in the widest way the possibilities offered by postmodenrnity to the historiography. It is in the narrative of White that the postmodernity expresses itself with most intensity in the historical knowledge.

Micconi, Giovanna. "Circus Aesthetics, Travel, History, and Mourning in the Poetry of Robert Hayden." Thesis, Harvard University, 2016. http://nrs.harvard.edu/urn-3:HUL.InstRepos:26718732.

Full text
Abstract:
Circus Aesthetics examines the work of the African American poet Robert Hayden and engages with the problem of identifying different frameworks with which to think about Hayden’s poetry and African American literature more broadly. In 1978, two years before his death, Hayden, the first African American poet to be nominated Poetry Consultant at the Library of Congress, was still struggling and fighting with the idea of being considered a “black poet” and with the socio-political implications and expectations that accompanied that label. During his address to the Library of Congress on May 8, 1978, he reiterated his discomfort at discussions of whether he was or was not a black poet and claimed that “poets too are keepers of a nation’s conscience, the partisans of freedom and justice, even when they eschew political involvement.” Hayden has often been analyzed and read in the context of his racial, religious, or stylistic affiliations (as an African American, a Bahá’í, or a modernist poet). His poetics, however, are inclusive and engage with the exploration of a universal ethos where alterity is examined and celebrated. Circus Aesthetics argues that Hayden’s formal and thematic features are grounded in the African American literary tradition as well as in cosmopolitan and Universalist principles, thus making of him a rooted “transpolitan,” who defies notions of national borders as well as western understandings of cosmopolitanism. Looking at Hayden’s poetry through careful and sustained close readings, this dissertation adds a new dimension to Hayden’s work by thinking of new, hemispheric ways in which to think of literature and the intersection of time, space, and history.

Abstract:
The Hayden-Rhodes Aqueduct (HRA) extends from Lake Havasu along the California and Arizona border to 40 km northeast of Phoenix, Arizona. The Bureau of Reclamation established water catchments for wildlife, and wildlife bridges to provide access for wildlife across the HRA. I investigated the effectiveness of these mitigations for desert mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus crooki) from July 1989 to July 1990. I examined deer use of wildlife bridges, concrete overchutes, and water catchments; the quality of deer habitat at crossings; and the influence of mountain lions (Felis concolor) on deer at water catchments. All water catchments were used by deer. There was very little use of wildlife crossings by deer. Deer habitat on the north side of the HRA received more use by deer than habitats south of the HRA. I could not determine if mountain lions capture prey more often near water catchments than in other areas.

Abstract:
This paper aims to investigate the theories of those authors who, in the last eighty years, have studied and explored the relationship between history and its narration. Although we can talk about narrativism, considered as branch of study, only from the second half of XX century, all the history and all the historians of all time, more or less voluntarily, have reasoned about the concept of the story and how to tell it. My thesis, on the one hand, while it will focus on members of narrativism of the last century, on the other hand it will start by the Greeks, to analyse the contributions of the most significant authors of each age.

Abstract:
The optical deconvolution system previously described by Hayden and Reeve requires an electrooptical computing system which can measure the power spectral densities of pulsed signals applied to an acoustooptical cell. A system is described in this work wherein the optical computing section consists of a He–Ne laser beam which is modulated using an acoustooptical modulator, and the Fourier transform is performed by a simple lens. The power spectral density is measured by a linear photodiode array interfaced to a British Broadcasting Corporation microcomputer. This system is evaluated using common signal waveforms, such as a chirp. The ability to measure signals of arbitrary shape is explored, and applications of this system to deconvolution problems are discussed.

Full text
Abstract:
HAYNES 230 and 617 alloys are competing for use on Generation IV, high temperature gas cooled reactor components because of their good high temperature creep strength in the temperature range of 760°C and 982°C and resistance to attack in the gas cooled reactor environment. A review of the metallurgy affecting the properties in each alloy is provided. It is shown that the grain size and carbide precipitation developed during manufacture affect short term and long term ductility, fatigue life, and creep strength. For example, 230 alloy has a finer grained structure which promotes fatigue strength with a slight sacrifice in creep strength. The 617 alloy has a coarser grain structure which provides slightly higher creep resistance while sacrificing some fatigue strength. Thermal aging also introduces gamma prime precipitation to 617 alloy in addition to grain boundary carbides. This, along with grain boundary oxidation, reduces the low cycle fatigue strength of 617 alloy compared to 230 alloy. Independent studies have shown that 230 alloy possesses higher resistance to thermal fatigue than 617 alloy. However, welds of both base metals with similar weld composition have about the same thermal fatigue life. Cooling rates from solution annealing temperatures during processing affect the ductility and creep strength of these alloys with the highest cooling rates preferred for retention of ductility and creep strength. Slow cooling rates promote carbide precipitation in the grain boundaries which reduces ductility and creep strength.
