BackgroundHuman T-lymphotropic virus type 1 (HTLV-1) carriers may develop severe systemic diseases, such as adult T cell leukaemia (ATL) or HTLV-1-associated myelopathy/tropical spastic paraparesis (HAM/TSP). This study aims to investigate systemic diseases of HTLV-1 carriers who had developed HTLV-1-associated uveitis (HAU).MethodsWe investigated the occurrence of systemic diseases in 200 patients with HAU by performing a retrospective investigation of their medical records and examining the results of a postal survey.ResultsThe mean age of HAU onset was 49 years, and the total person-years from HAU onset was 1627. There were two cases of ATL. Of these, one was diagnosed with smouldering ATL at the time of HAU onset and the other developed acute-type ATL 4 years after HAU onset. There were 26 cases of HAM/TSP; of these, HAM/TSP occurred first in 13 cases and HAU occurred first in 11 cases. The interval between the onset of HAM/TSP and HAU ranged from 6 months to 6 years, with no significant difference observed based on whether HAM/TSP or HAU occurred first. Hyperthyroidism was noted in 45 cases and preceded onset in all cases. HAU onset occurred after starting thiamazole treatment, and in two cases HAU recurred each time thiamazole treatment was restarted.ConclusionHTLV-1 carriers with HAU may develop HAM/TSP more frequently than general carriers. HTLV-1 carriers undergoing treatment for hyperthyroidism may be prone to developing HAU.

Abstract:

Hau Thao Village is located in Sa Pa Prefecture, in northern Vietnam. The village contains one of the most picturesque landscapes with terraced paddy fields located in landslide topography formed on a gentle slope. However, the creation of the topography has not been sufficiently clarified. In this study, samples of soil and stone are taken from two landslide areas in Hau Thao Village for mineral composition analysis, clarifying that the sauce rock of the deposits comprising the landslide areas is made up of granitoids, forming the upper slope above the fault located in the hinterland. The landslides occurring in Hau Thao Village are caused by the remobilization of the secondary deposits transported from the upper part of the slope by debris flow.

Hau Kiou Choaan represents a fresh enquiry into literary orientalism in Britain of the eighteenth century. This article will discuss Percy's adaptation of Hau Kiou Choaan from an original Chinese novel, and how the ways in which Percy interprets the Chinese novel signify his peculiar views of China. On the title page of Hau Kiou Choaan; or, The Pleasing History (1761), Thomas Percy quotes from Jean-Baptiste Du Halde’s A Description of the Empire of China and of Chinese Tartary (1738): ‘There is no better means of instruction on China than letting China speak for herself’. It remains questionable, whether by presenting an original piece of Chinese literature, Percy has really let China ‘speak for herself’; it is reasonable to argue that Hau Kiou Choaan carries as much information about China as it does about Percy’s own perceptions of this country. Whether Percy’s works and views of China provoked louder criticism or higher praise, his input into the studies of China was a positive one, for it contributed to an increasingly vigorous debate that would increasingly perceive differences as a source of strength, not weakness.

IntroductionJapan is the most endemic of the developed nations in terms of human T-lymphotropic virus type 1 (HTLV-1) infection. Japan has been tackling HTLV-1 infection and has made remarkable progress. In ophthalmology, awareness of the association between HTLV-1 infection and uveitis has been increasing since the 1990s, when the relationship was first established. Here, we describe a nationwide survey and analysis of the current state of medical care for HTLV-1-associated uveitis (HAU) at ophthalmic facilities in Japan.MethodsA questionnaire survey covered all university hospitals in Japan that were members of the Japanese Ophthalmological Society and all regional core facilities that were members of the Japanese Ocular Inflammation Society. Survey data were collected, and nationwide data on the state of medical care for HAU were tallied and analysed.ResultsOf the 115 facilities, 69 (60.0%) responded. HAU was most commonly diagnosed ‘based on blood tests and characteristic ophthalmic findings’. Overall, 86.8% of facilities perform testing for HTLV-1 antibodies during medical care for diagnosing uveitis, with 58.3% routinely performing testing. Facilities with experience in providing medical care for HAU accounted for 67.6%. The survey also revealed that 85.5% of facilities had seen no decrease in the number of patients with HAU.ConclusionsIn the two decades since the establishment of HAU as a pathological entity, the majority of facilities in Japan have started performing testing for HTLV-1 antibodies when considering differential diagnoses for uveitis. Our data suggest that providing information on HTLV-1 infection to ophthalmologists in Japan has been successfully implemented.

Abstract:

Increased norepinephrine production by acute urine retention (AUR) induced sympathetic activation may contribute to acute liver injury (ALI) via the action of hepatic vasoconstriction and increased reactive oxygen species (ROS) production. We evaluated whether In-Chern-Hau-Tang, a hepatoprotective herb medicine, and its major ingredient genipin, may ameliorate norepinephrine-induced liver injury in the rat. We determined the effects of In-Chern-Hau-Tang and genipin on norepinephrine-induced oxidative stress in the Kupffer and endothelial cells and AUR-induced ALI in the rat via a chemiluminescence analyzer, physiologic and biochemical determination and western blot. The results of in vitro study showed that genipin with efficient H 2 O 2 and HOCl scavenging activities decreased norepinephrine-enhanced ROS production in the Kupffer cell and endothelial cell cultures. AUR activated hepatic sympathetic nervous activity lead to a hepatic hypoxia/hypoperfusion, and a reduction in bile flow. AUR increased intercellular adhesion molecular 1 (ICAM-1) protein expression, and hepatic ROS production from the activated leukocyte NADPH oxidase activity subsequently leading to plasma aspartate aminotransferase (AST) elevation. Hepatic sympathetic denervation, or oral pretreatment of In-Chern-Hau-Tang or genipin for 1 week ameliorated the level in AUR-induced hepatic hypoxia/hypoperfusion, and bile stasis. Hepatic denervation, In-Chern-Hau-Yang and genipin inhibited AUR-enhanced hepatic ICAM-1 expression, hepatic ROS production, leukocyte NADPH oxidase activity and plasma AST activity. In conclusion, In-Chern-Hau-Tang along with its active component, genipin, can ameliorate AUR-induced ALI via the alleviation of oxidative stress possibly by the inhibition of sympathetic induced hypoxia/hypoperfusion and leukocyte NADPH oxidase activity.

Abstract:

Thien Hau (天后, Tian Hou) is a folk belief of the ethnic Chinese in Vietnam, which was propagated to Southern Vietnam by Chinese immigrants from Southeast China in the late 17th century, constantly strengthened and developed together with the process of development and integration of the ethnic Chinese community. During the process of cultural exchange, the ethnic Chinese have found in Thien Hau symbolic meanings of ethnic culture, and also an integrated icon of connecting and reconciling cultures with local Vietnamese and Khmer communities (to compare with the Vietnamized Guan Di symbol). ThienHau was sanctioned the title Heavenly Empress by the late imperial emperors of China, thereby attaching to this symbol the Confucian normative values through which the state could manage to control and standardize the liturgical communities in the Confucian way. However, in Southern Vietnam, when the symbol of Thien Hau has early entered the process of de-Confucianization and de-centralization, it has deeply absorbed Buddhist philosophy to transform and develop among the liturgical communities. This paper applied two specific cultural theories in the study of ritual practice and cultural transformation. One was of James Watson’s (1985) standardizing the gods and rituals in late imperial Chinese culture, and the other was the concept on the relationship between in-depth faith and ritualpractice by Melissa Brown (2007). This research was conducted through the fieldwork activities (Southern Vietnam is where over 80% of Thien Hau temples are located within the whole country), comparison and analysis methodologies for the description, and interpretation of the Buddhist influence(s) in the cult of Thien Hau in Southern Vietnam, thereby understanding the principle(s) of operation and development of cultural exchange in the region

Abstract:

Antistasin, which was originally discovered in the salivary glands of the Mexican leech Haementeria officinalis, was newly isolated from Helobdella austinensis. To confirm the temporal expression of antistasin during embryogenesis, we carried out semi-quantitative RT-PCR. Hau-antistasin1 was uniquely expressed at stage 4 of the cleavage and was strongly expressed in the late stages of organogenesis, as were other antistasin members. In order to confirm the spatial expression of antistasin, we performed fluorescence in situ hybridization in the late stages of organogenesis. The expression of each antistasin in the proboscis showed a similar pattern and varied in expression in the body. In addition, the spatial expression of antistasin orthologs in different leeches showed the possibility of different function across leech species. Hau-antistasin1 was expressed in the same region as hedgehog, which is a known mediator of signal transduction pathway. Hau-antistasin1 is probably a downstream target of Hedgehog signaling, involved in segment polarity signal pathway.

Several stretches of shore line in the Red River Delta (RRD) are suffering from severe erosion, especially an area between too large river mouths Balat in the North and Day in the South, known as Hai Hau beach. Several different hypothesis have been put forward to explain this erosion. The cut off of the Ha Lan river mouth (in 1955) which discharged sediment at the upstream end of the beach, possibly affects Hai Hau beach. Also, the construction of Hoa Binh dam in the upstream part of Red river has reduced the sediment supply to the area. In this study, it is shown that the prevailing wave climate in connection with the complex topography of Balat river mouth and Hai Hau beach promotes erosion along the coastal line. A two dimensional random wave transformation model was used with 20-year time series of hindcast waves to compute the long shore sediment transport along the study beach.

Abstract:

Hau Giang is one of 13 provinces in the Mekong Delta. Total land area is 162,171 ha (statistics 2014), agricultural land is 141,217 ha accounting for 87.08 % of natural area. To exploit the reasonable land and provide a scientific basis for adjusting the land use planning to 2020, the evaluation of land resources in Hau Giang was carried out. To apply the land evaluation methodology of FAO to research on natural conditions, socio-economic related to land use to evaluate land resources as well as to apply for geographic information system (GIS) and automatically land evaluation system (ALES) gave results positively, quickly and efficiently. Evaluation results showed that Hau Giang had four major land groups with 11 land mapping units; alluvium land group accounted for 37.26 % of natural area. From the map overlay has been integrated 28 land units. Basing on 44 LUTs surveys was selected for 16 LUTs to have development prospects to evaluate land suitability. Land use was divided into 5 main groups: alluvial land belonged to riverside Hau, slightly saline land was not submerged and was shallow, and low-lying saline land was flooded and saline land was salty. To combine with evaluating the current state of land use, productive techniques and socio-economic development needed supplementing of land use planning by 2020 as follows: (1) agricultural land is 141,217 ha (87.08 %); (2) non-agricultural land is 20,918 ha (12.90 %) and (3) unused land is 36 ha (0.02 %) of natural area.

Abstract 3 Background: At Hospice Africa Uganda (HAU), patients' spiritual well-being is assessed in depth upon admission, but there are no rigorous assessment tools for regular spiritual distress screening in this setting. Our prior research demonstrated the “Spirit 8” assessment too cumbersome for routine use by HAU staff. The new “Spirit 3” includes three core questions thought to be most clinically relevant. The aims are to assess the feasibility of the Spirit 3 in routine screening for spiritual distress in hospice and to understand whether HAU staff value using the Spirit 3 in routine clinical practice. Methods: Between June 2014 and February 2015, the Spirit 3 was administered to consenting patients for four consecutive visits. The scale ranges from 3 to 15 with 15 representing an ideal state of spiritual well-being. For any patient unable to complete all assessments, a reason was recorded. Any staff intervention performed was recorded. Results: 49 patients were enrolled in the study and completed the first assessment. 41 (84%) of those patients had untreatable, metastatic cancer and 8 (16%) had HIV/AIDS. Twenty patients (41%) completed the second assessment; 11 the third (23%); and 8 patients (16%) completed all 4 assessments. There were no partially completed assessments. Eight patients died prior to the second assessment; the remainder were missed by research staff during clinical care and thus lost to follow-up. At 86% of visits, a staff member performed an intervention to address the reported spiritual distress. Upon study completion, 75% of the HAU staff wished to use the Spirit 3 in routine clinical care. Conclusion: Almost half of living patients completed the second assessment (49%). Attrition was due to difficulty in flagging charts rather than any barriers in acceptance by patients or staff. This work was conducted to evaluate the effect of drying methods on the nutritional values and physicochemical properties of unpeeled banana flour. Proximate, amylose content, phenolic compound, resistant starch, total dietary fibre, functional properties, pasting properties, and thermal properties of dried banana flour samples were evaluated. Three different drying methods of whole banana with the intact peel were studied including 1) hot-air unpeeled flour (HAU) (dried at 60oC for 2 h in hot-air chamber), 2) microwave-vacuum unpeeled flour (MVU) (36,000 W under vacuum -600 mmHg for 15 min in a pilot microwave-vacuum dryer), and 3) infrared unpeeled flour (IRU) (600 W for 15 min in infrared channel dryer). The HAU and MVU showed the highest yield. Drying methods did not affect the compositions of the flour but significantly affected the total dietary fibre, resistant starch, amylose content and phenolic compound of the flour. Among samples, HAU contained the highest nutritional values with outstanding functional properties, and pasting properties. The unpeeled banana flour can be utilized in various food products such as noodle, bakeries, snack or used as functional ingredients for nutritional purposes.

The study aimed to assess the variation of surface water quality and evaluate the monitoring frequency at threecontinuous monitoring stations on the Tien river (MT1 station) and Hau river (MH1 and MH2 station) over a 10-year period (2009-2018), with a monitoring frequency of 12 times per year (monthly). The water quality variables comprised of temperature (oC), pH, dissolved oxygen (DO, mg/L), total suspended solids (TSS, mg/L), nitrate (N-NO- 3 , mg/L), orthophosphate (P-PO3 4- mg/L), chemical oxygen demand (COD, mg/L), and coliforms (MPN/100 mL). The individual water quality parameters were assessed by comparison with National Technical Regulation on surface water quality (QCVN 08-MT: 2015/BTNMT). Monitoring frequency was evaluatedusing Cluster Analysis (CA). The findings revealed that surface water on both Tien and Hau rivers was perpetually polluted with suspended solids, organic matter, nutrients, and microorganisms. The CA identified that the frequencies of current water monitoring could be reduced from 12 times to 5 times per year, resulting in a 58% reduction in monitoring costs. Future study should focus on evaluating water quality parameters toencompass all water quality characteristics in the Tien and Hau rivers. International collaboration with countries that impact the river before flowing into Vietnam in water management should be enhanced to solve continuing water problems.

AbstractPersons with clinically significant tinnitus also may have mild sensorineural hearing loss (MSNHL). The purpose of this study was to describe patients with tinnitus and MSNHL and factors predicting hearing-aid uptake (HAU). We conducted a retrospective chart review with regression modeling of patients presenting to a specialty tinnitus clinic over a 2.5-year period. Stepwise logistic regression on data from patient charts was conducted. Of 133 patients seen, two-thirds had MSNHL (95% confidence interval [CI]: 58.9–75.0; mean age = 53.4 years; standard deviation = 14.5); approximately 50% had severe-to-catastrophic tinnitus. Logistic regression indicated that four-frequency pure-tone average (FFPTA; left) (β = 0.3899, χ 2 = 10.96, degrees of freedom [DF] = 1, p = 0.0009) and age (β = 0.1273, χ 2 = 4.86, DF = 1, p = 0.0274) were positively associated with HAU; tinnitus severity was inversely related (β = − 1.0533, χ 2 = 4.24, DF = 1, p = 0.0395). Adjusting for key variables, odds of receiving hearing aids was 1.14 (95% CI: 1.01–1.27) times higher with every year increase in age, 1.48 (95% CI: 1.17–1.86) times higher per one point increase in FFPTA (left), and 0.35 (95% CI: 0.13–0.95) times less per one point increase in tinnitus severity score. Reasons why HAU was not high for this special sample of young adults with severe tinnitus and MSNHL are discussed; hearing aid treatment requires extensive counseling and follow-up for this population.

IntroductionShort screenings of alcohol-related dependence are needed for population-based assessments. A clinical interview constitutes a reliable diagnosis often seen as gold standard, but it is costly and time consuming and as such, not suitable for population-based assessments. Therefore, self-reported questionnaires are needed (eg, alcohol use disorder (AUD) as in the Diagnostic and Statistic Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) 5), but their reliability is questionable. Recent studies called for more evidence-based measurements for population-based screening (eg, heavy alcohol use over time (HAU)). This study aims to test the reliability of different self-reported measures of alcohol use.Methods and analysisBased on stratified random selection, 280 participants will be recruited from the French-speaking subgroup of the Swiss National Science Foundation-supported Cohort Study on Substance Use and Risk Factors (C-SURF). This cohort is a population-based sample of young Swiss men in their mid-20s (n=2668). The sample size calculation is based on a proportion non-inferiority test (alpha=5%, power=80%, margin of equivalence=10%, difference in sensitivity between self-reported AUD and HAU=5%, correlation between AUD and HAU=0.35, and drop-outs=15%). Assessment will include a clinical interview as the gold standard of alcohol-related dependence, self-reported alcohol measures (HAU, AUD and drinking patterns), biomarkers as gold standards of chronic excessive drinking, and health outcomes. To assess the validity of the self-reported alcohol measures, sensitivity analyses will be run. The associations between alcohol-related measures and health outcomes will be tested. A non-response analysis will be run using the previous waves of the C-SURF study using logistic regressions.Ethics and disseminationThe study protocol has been approved by the Human Research Ethics Committee of the Canton of Vaud, Switzerland (no. 2017–00776). A new melted bioactive system containing gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) was prepared exploiting a post-synthesis thermal treatment that allows one to modify crystal phases and nature, shape and distribution of the gold species in the glass-ceramic matrix as evidenced by UV–visible spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy and powder X-ray diffraction analysis. In human MG-63 osteoblasts the presence of Au n + species caused an increase of lactate dehydrogenase leakage and malonyldialdehyde production, whereas Hench's Bioglass HAu-600-17 containing only AuNPs did not cause any effect. In addition, HAu-600-17 caused in vitro hydroxyapatite formation and an increase of specific surface area with a controlled release of gold species; this material is then suitable to be used as a model system for the controlled delivery of nanoparticles.

Abstract This article studies the discourse in the late eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century French periodical press on the topic of translations of travel writing. It reveals that travel reviews were arenas for discussing the political and ideological value of translating travelogues into French, notably from English. In the context of the Franco-British conflicts at the turn of the century, the French press perceived translations of British travel writing as potential patriotic tools that allowed different ways of countering or subverting British global influence. Paratextual elements of translations, the translator’s prefaces and notes, appeared to be particularly important in this respect. By analysing the periodical discourse on travel book translations, the article shows how travel writing was constructed as a politically invested genre.

Abstract While there is a growing body of research on impoliteness and conflict talk, the role of accusations in interpersonal conflict has been only addressed in passing. In this paper, we focus on accusations in conflict talk amongst interactants who are in a situation demanding the formation of intimate relationships within a relatively short span of time, namely, the television reality show Big Brother. We examine, in particular, accusation sequences arising in multi-party interactions from the Argentinian and Spanish versions of the show. We analyse the ways in which assertions of fault or wrongdoing are construed as accusations through such responses as denials, counter-accusations and challenges, and the ways in which participants explicitly evaluate each other’s behaviour through such sequences. We conclude that accusations are designed primarily to enact moral denunciation or condemnation of another party, and so almost invariably occasion interpersonal disputes.

Multi-temporal Landsat data are used for this study over the period of 1989 to 2016 with imageries of 1989, 2001, 2009 and 2016. Band rationing method and threshold technique are applied for the coastline extraction. The Digital Shoreline Analysis System ENVI 5.1, eCognition and ArcGIS 10.3 are used to calculate shoreline rate-of-change statistics from multiple historical shoreline positions. The results show that shoreline change in the Hau river mouth area has a trend of deposition between 1989 and 2016 (27 years) with the accretion area ranging from 162.68 ha to 1,210.83 ha. Meanwhile, the erosion area only ranges from 0.002 ha to 183.53 ha. The results obtained from this study set a stage for new studies to understand the morphological changes of the river mouths in the Mekong Delta and coastal areas of Hau river.

Correlation of erosion - aggradation in areas along Tien and Hau RiversRiverside erosion, one of the most severe natural disasters, has been occuring along the banks of Tien river and Hau for many years. Many segments in Tan Chau, Hong Ngu, Sa Dec,… are seriously affected by the disaster. There are numbers of studies that have indentified levels, causes of the erosion process and proposed solutions for the decrease of erosional negative influences. Based on analysing satellite images, map, monitoring a series of channel cross - sections by echosounder and the study of geomorphology, the study concluded that erosion and deposition, specific natural processes of braided and meandering river in flood plains, balance one another. Bulding stone jetties and uncomprehensive management have accelerated both two processes: erosion and deposition. Combining the dredge river bed and exploitation of materials for construction is the most effective solution to reduce river shore erosion.

Abstract:

In this article I discuss the seeming 'theft' of the Urewera Mural in 1997, using the term ‘cultural activism’ to describe the mural’s removal, because it acted as a catalyst to refocus the spotlight on specific Maori land claim issues. The Urewera Mural was targeted because it was portrayed as an object of white cultural value with significant representations for Pakeha. Te Kaha’s intention was for Pakeha to lose something of value and to experience how Maori have felt since colonisation when their land, their cultural value, was taken. Stephen Muecke writes that ‘cultural activism can have the same result as political activism, but it doesn’t look the same ... It is a tactical “bringing out” of culture as a valuable and scarce “statement” ’. I suggest cultural activism is, thus, ‘performative’ political activism; for when protestors dress up and ‘perform’ their protest, a media identity is created that is beyond the political message, and so more memorable.
