Abstract:

Abstract:
Many prominent scientists have pointed out that philosophy is of no benefit to science. Stephen Hawking asserts: Philosophy is dead! Sciences use conceptions like natural laws, matter, nature, theories, etc. But science is also confronted with questions such as: "What is a natural law?" "What is nature?" "What is matter?" and "What is a scientific theory?" These (metatheoretical) questions exceed the sphere of competence of science – they are items of the philosophy of science. Philosophy of science is a metatheory of science. The Philosophy of science overlaps epistemology, ontology, and metaphysics by exploring whether scientific results are true, or whether entities like quarks or electrons really exist. More detailed investigations bring various questions into consideration such as: "How do we define the boundaries between different scientific disciplines?" "Is there a relation between the beauty and the truth of a scientific theory?" and "How do we distinguish between science and pseudoscience?" Additionally, the philosophy of science is concerned with ethical problems of modern technology, with the methodological questions, with the reconstruction of the structure and the development of scientific theories, and with revealing of any indoctrination of science. The optimistic conclusion of this paper is: Philosophy is still alive – but the philosopher has to participate in round-table discussions with scientists. We just want philosophers talking to scientists!

Abstract:
The Hat Lady Equation is a collection of poems by Lauren Capone. As influences she cites Elizabeth Bishop, John Berryman, among the exquisite minutiae of day-to-day living. The poems explore works of visual art by Alberto Giacometti, James Taylor Bonds, Chris Dennis, Blaine Capone (her brother), and creatures of the natural world including fish, the rhinoceros, a lettered olive shell. . . . Lauren shows a preoccupation with disassembling through the poems whether it's her identity, art, or happenings of everyday life.

Krzywkowski, Marcin Piotr. "Hat problem on a graph." Thesis, University of Exeter, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10036/4019.

Full text
Abstract:
The topic of this thesis is the hat problem. In this problem, a team of n players enters a room, and a blue or red hat is randomly placed on the head of each player. Every player can see the hats of all of the other players but not his own. Then each player must simultaneously guess the color of his own hat or pass. The team wins if at least one player guesses his hat color correctly and no one guesses his hat color wrong, otherwise the team loses. The aim is to maximize the probability of winning. This thesis is based on publications, which form the second chapter. In the first chapter we give an overview of the published results. In Section 1.1 we introduce to the hat problem and the hat problem on a graph, where vertices correspond to players, and a player can see the adjacent players. To the hat problem on a graph we devote the next few sections. First, we give some fundamental theorems about the problem. Then we solve the hat problem on trees, cycles, and unicyclic graphs. Next we consider the hat problem on graphs with a universal vertex. We also investigate the problem on graphs with a neighborhood-dominated vertex. In addition, we consider the hat problem on disconnected graphs. Next we investigate the problem on graphs such that the only known information are degrees of vertices. We also present Nordhaus-Gaddum type inequalities for the hat problem on a graph. In Section 1.6 we investigate the hat problem on directed graphs. The topic of Section 1.7 is the generalized hat problem with q >= 2 colors. A modified hat problem is considered in Section 1.8. In this problem there are n >= 3 players and two colors. The players do not have to guess their hat colors simultaneously and we modify the way of making a guess. We give an optimal strategy for this problem which guarantees the win. Applications of the hat problem and its connections to different areas of science are presented in Section 1.9. We also give there a comprehensive list of variations of the hat problem considered in the literature.

Abstract:
This new power cycle is derived from a simplified HAT cycle, with a partial recirculation of the exhaust gases added with respect to the traditional HAT configuration. The basic idea of applying recirculation to the HAT cycle stems from the interesting performance levels and general environmental advantages obtainable applying this technique to combined-cycle (SCGT/CC) and regenerative GT solutions (SCGT/RE); these power plants all share the integration with CO2 chemical scrubbing of the exhaust stack in order to reduce greenhouse effects. A relevant advantage of the proposed configuration over the original HAT solution is the possibility of complete water recovery from the separator before the recirculation node; here the temperature level is necessarily very low, allowing thus condensation of water produced by the natural-gas combustion process. This allows the self–sustainement of the HAT cycle, from the water consumption point of view, without any external supply. For the water separator, two thermodynamic models were developed (respectively simulating a single- and a multiple temperature condensation process), which have provided similar results. The whole cycle is modeled using a modular code, thoroughly tested against the performance of a large set of existing GTs. The layout is derived from an existing HAT configuration, with suppression of the economizer section in the regenerator and the possible practice of external (non-recuperative) intercooling between the two compressors. The first choice is imposed by the presence of an additional low-temperature heat load for the CO2 removal plant, while the second is sometimes necessary depending on the compressor pressure ratios and the possibility of including inside the cycle low-temperature internal cycle regeneration. The expected performance of the plant is relatively high and close to those typical of HAT, SCGT/RE and SCGT/CC cycles: a LHV-based efficiency level exceeding 50% inclusive of CO2 separation and delivery at ambient pressure and temperature; the specific work levels — in the range of 680 kJ/kg for the basic configuration — are lower than those of the HAT cycle but larger than for SCGT/CC and SCGT/RE solutions; the cycle requires relatively high overall pressure ratios (35–40). A notable improvement in specific work can be obtained with reheat.

Abstract:
