Abstract:
Study of 500 farmer families in the breed tract indicated that very few number Krishna Valley animals exist in the tract and are maintained by few farmer families. Comparatively poor socio-economic status of community accompanied by lower conditions, literacy and preference for maintaining this breed type indicate the capacity of these animals to perform in hard. The variation observed during phenotypic type scoring indicated possible mixing of this breed with other cattle breeds. To save the breed from extinction, breed specific programmes for phenotypic purification of the mixed population need be taken up by genetic selection approach for conservation and improvement of this breed.

Abstract:
Abomasal ulcers in cattle often present with non-specific clinical signs meaning that it is one of several differentials that may be relevant for a wide range of clinical presentations. This, combined with a lack of accurate diagnostic tests, makes the condition hard for the clinician to diagnose with confidence. The management and prognosis for cattle differ significantly depending on the severity and chronicity of an abomasal ulcer. It is important that clinicians are aware of the possibilities for diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis of the varying forms of this condition so they can offer the most appropriate management plans for the individual animal in every case.

Abstract:

Abstract:
In the present study, species diversity, prevalence and distribution of hard ticks was conducted along six substations; Barshi city, Gadegaon, Khandavi, Soundare, Ridhore and Wadshinge from Barshi and Madha Taluka of Solapur District, Maharashtra, India. Hard ticks were collected from domestic animals (canines, cattle and cats) monthly from January 2021 to December 2021. A total of 450 domestic animals were inspected, of which 233 animals comprising 103 canine, 108 cattle and 22 cats were infested with ticks. 2 species of hard ticks (Rhipicephalus sanguineus and Rhipicephalus microplus) were recorded from the study area. Recorded ticks revealed higher density and a serious infestation in studied domestic animals. In dogs, maximum density of ticks was recorded in and around ear and the neck, compared to appendages, abdomen, back and perianal region. While in cattle, abundance of ticks was found around the neck region (crest and dewlap), ear, and from the tail, head to the udder region. Cats revealed higher density of tick infestation to the ear only. This could be attributed to the abiotic factors like hot and arid climate of the study area for which the ticks show highest adaptation. Regular monitoring of the health, vaccination against bacterial and viral pathogens and to maintain health and hygiene of the domestic animals is recommended. Plant-based acaricidal compounds should be used for prevention and control of hard ticks. Study suggests practice of integrated approaches to manage the hard ticks in a sustainable manner.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This book describes the choices open to farming families in the Sahelian village of Kala, in central Mali. Life in this drought-prone region is harsh and full of risk to health, crops, and livestock, yet there are also opportunities open to the hard-working, audacious and lucky, bringing considerable returns if the timing is right. Three inter-related themes underlie the analysis of production and investment decisions faced by households; the role of risk, the long timeframe within which decisions are made, and the close links between economic performance and household size and organisation. Climatic variability and demographic uncertainty lie at the heart of domestic structures; the extreme vulnerability faced by single individuals means people cluster in large kin-based groups, pooling risks and providing protection. The very limited development of labour markets means that households rely almost entirely on their own members for their workforce, and generating the capital needed for investing in ploughs, wells, carts and livestock must stem from a good year’s grain surplus and migration earnings. Based on field-research over the period 1980-82, this study illustrates a successful response to making ends meet in a land abundant region, despite high risks of drought. A follow-up study of this village was published in 2020: Land, Investment, and Migration. Thirty-five years of village life in Mali (OUP).

Abstract:
We fail to mandate economic sanity, writes Garrett Hardin, "because our brains are addled by...compassion." With such startling assertions, Hardin has cut a swathe through the field of ecology for decades, winning a reputation as a fearless and original thinker. A prominent biologist, ecological philosopher, and keen student of human population control, Hardin now offers the finest summation of his work to date, with an eloquent argument for accepting the limits of the earth's resources--and the hard choices we must make to live within them. In Living Within Limits, Hardin focuses on the neglected problem of overpopulation, making a forceful case for dramatically changing the way we live in and manage our world. Our world itself, he writes, is in the dilemma of the lifeboat: it can only hold a certain number of people before it sinks--not everyone can be saved. The old idea of progress and limitless growth misses the point that the earth (and each part of it) has a limited carrying capacity; sentimentality should not cloud our ability to take necessary steps to limit population. But Hardin refutes the notion that goodwill and voluntary restraints will be enough. Instead, nations where population is growing must suffer the consequences alone. Too often, he writes, we operate on the faulty principle of shared costs matched with private profits. In Hardin's famous essay, "The Tragedy of the Commons," he showed how a village common pasture suffers from overgrazing because each villager puts as many cattle on it as possible--since the costs of grazing are shared by everyone, but the profits go to the individual. The metaphor applies to global ecology, he argues, making a powerful case for closed borders and an end to immigration from poor nations to rich ones. "The production of human beings is the result of very localized human actions; corrective action must be local....Globalizing the 'population problem' would only ensure that it would never be solved." Hardin does not shrink from the startling implications of his argument, as he criticizes the shipment of food to overpopulated regions and asserts that coercion in population control is inevitable. But he also proposes a free flow of information across boundaries, to allow each state to help itself. "The time-honored practice of pollute and move on is no longer acceptable," Hardin tells us. We now fill the globe, and we have no where else to go. In this powerful book, one of our leading ecological philosophers points out the hard choices we must make--and the solutions we have been afraid to consider.

Abstract:
Cattle are the primary grazers on the shortgrass steppe. For example, during the late 1990s, 21 shortgrass counties in Colorado reported about 2.36 million cattle compared with 283,000 sheep (National Agricultural Statistics Service, USDA, 1997a), 60,000 pronghorn antelope, and a few thousand bison (Hart, 1994). Assuming one bison or five to six sheep or pronghorn consume as much forage as one bovine (Heady and Child, 1994), cattle provide about 97% of the large-herbivore grazing pressure in this region. The ratio of cattle to other grazers is even greater in the remainder of the shortgrass steppe. In 1997, the three panhandle counties of Oklahoma reported 387,000 cattle and only 1300 sheep, whereas the 38 panhandle counties of Texas reported 4.24 million cattle and 14,000 sheep (National Agricultural Statistics Service, USDA, 1997b,c). How ever, only a bout half the cattle in the panhandle counties of Texas and Oklahoma graze on rangeland the remainer are in feedlots. Rangeland research on the shortgrass steppe (Table 17.1 describes the parameters of the major research stations in the shortgrass steppe) has included a long history of both basic ecology and grazing management. The responses of rangeland plant communities to herbivory are addressed by Milchunas et al. (chapter 16, this volume) and to disturbance are discussed by Peters et al. (chapter 6, this volume). Here we focus on research pertaining to three management practices important to cattle ranching on shortgrass steppe: stocking rates, grazing systems, and extending the grazing season via complementary pastures and use of pastures dominated by Atriplex canescens [Pursh] Nutt (fourwing saltbush). Stocking rate, de. ned as the number of animals per unit area for a speci. ed time period, is the primary and most easily controlled variable in the management of cattle grazing. Cattle weight gain responses to stocking rate or grazing pressure (animal days per unit of forage produced) have been quanti. ed in several grazing studies on the shortgrass steppe (Bement, 1969, 1974; Hart and Ashby, 1998; Klipple and Costello, 1960). Average daily gains per animal are better estimated as a function of grazing pressure, rather than stocking rate, as forage production is highly variable in this semiarid environment (Lauenroth and Sala, 1992; Milchunas et al., 1994).

Abstract:
This chapter looks at the growing problem of pollution on Manhattan Island. Since its founding, the city lacked proper sanitation. Garbage piles along the streets—which the public nicknamed “Corporation Pudding”—were supposed to be cleared up by the Department of Street Cleaning. However, the contractors rarely did their job. Because of the clutter, New York's streets proved hard to navigate. Adding to the nastiness was the mass of pigs, cattle and horses—which meant mounds of manure—along with all the rats scurrying around. Not surprisingly, sanitary conditions were thus the main cause of the diseases that permeated all levels of 19th-century New York society. With limited understanding of medicine or a sense of how to combat disease, Yellow Fever and cholera wreaked havoc on the city.

Abstract:
Nairobi sheep disease virus (NSDV) is a one of the viruses transmitted by tick vectors and causes Nairobi sheep disease (NSD) – a disease of small ruminants. The disease was first identified as a problem in sheep and goats in Kenya in 1910. The virus belongs to the genus Nairovirus and family Bunyaviridae. An equally pathogenic variant of NSDV is Ganjam virus, which is found in India and Sri Lanka. Both viruses are closely related to the human pathogen Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever virus (CCHFV), a fever transmitted through infected tick bites or through contact with infected animal blood or tissues during and immediately after slaughter. Other members of the genus include Dugbe virus, Hazara virus, and Kupe virus, isolated from cattle ticks in East Africa. The virus is spread by hard (Ixodid) ticks and appears to be dependent on the tick vector for dissemination, with no direct transmission between animals. The transmission of tick-borne viruses (TBV) occurs primarily during tick feeding and is a complex process, known to be promoted by tick saliva constituents.

Abstract:
Assisted reproductive technologies are critical in the preservation of gametes from endangered species. As a result, cryobanking is critical in reproduction facilities for the gametes conservation of endangered species for future use. Furthermore, cryobanking allows for the preservation of genetic variability through biotechnological reproduction programs. If oocyte cryopreservation is successful, the timing of in vitro maturation and subsequent to in vitro fertilization (IVF) will be possible. Cattle oocytes are very sensitive to cryopreservation due to their complex structure, and they are also very sensitive to chilling, which can harm their viability. During the cryopreservation process, sperm membrane proteins and carbohydrate composition change, sperm membrane structure is disrupted, and sperm viability is reduced. Extenders are frequently required during cryopreservation, for improving sperm cryopreservation technologies and is therefore necessary to have a thorough understanding of the properties of the extenders. Extenders have been enriched with antioxidants such as Glutathione to protect sperm motility and integrity from oxidative damage and the reactive oxygen species produced during cryopreservation can be neutralized using antioxidants.

Abstract In this and the following chapter I will describe, but only in sufficient detail to illustrate my subject, the expressive movements, under different states of the mind, of some few well known animals. But before considering them in due succession, it will save much useless repetition to discuss certain means of expression common to most of them. The emission of sounds. With many kinds of animals, man included, the vocal organs are efficient in the highest degree as a means of expression. We have seen, in the last chapter, that when the sensorium is strongly excited, the muscles of the body are generally thrown into violent action; and as a consequence, loud sounds are uttered, however silent the animal may generally be, and although the sounds may be of no use. Hares* and rabbits, for instance, never, I believe, use their vocal organs except in the extremity of suffering; as, when a wounded hare is killed by the sportsman, or when a young rabbit is caught by a stoat. Cattle and horses suffer great pain in silence; but when this is excessive,

Abstract:
Wildlife species have faced the impacts of human dominion over the world throughout history. More recently, there has been increased global protection for endangered species as a result of greater awareness and concern for biodiversity. Conservationists are becoming increasingly concerned about the pervasive issue of conflicts between human and wildlife interests, especially as it relates to large carnivores that have the potential to harm both cattle and people. Pre-conflict mitigation refers to proactive measures like fences while post-conflict mitigation refers to compensation payments for lost animals. Both can be used to lessen conflicts between wild animals and livestock owners. The goal of compensation programs is to raise people’s understanding of wildlife. But compensation programs are frequently criticized for being insufficient, difficult, and expensive. Compensation programs must be part of a comprehensive approach that includes options for controlling offending animals, proactive mitigation measures, and, in some cases, broader financial incentives for changes in land use practices in order to be more effective. The latter method has been used in India and several African countries. This chapter deals with various human-animal conflicts and their mitigation strategies. Despite these problems, conservation is likely to become increasingly utilized as biodiversity becomes increasingly threatened and methods of ameliorating threats lag behind.

Abstract:
Insight into the diet of domestic animals in the archaeological record can elucidate diverse activities pertaining to ancient agricultural systems, including the utilization of the landscape by livestock and their herders (Bocherens et al. 2001; Bentley et al. 2003; Charles & Bogaard 2005), the impact of livestock farming on the environment (Amorosi et al. 1998; Witt et al. 2000; Mainland 2001), seasonality in husbandry practices (Akeret et al. 1999; Akeret & Rentzel 2001; Charles & Bogaard 2005), animal productivity (Amorosi et al. 1998) and the role of animals in society (Moens & Wetterstom 1988; Mainland & Halstead 2004). Research into the diet of domestic livestock has, however, largely focused on cattle, sheep, and goats (see for example all the references cited above) and it is only relatively recently that palaeodietary studies have begun to consider suid diet/nutrition and its potential value for elucidating the socio-economics of pig husbandry (e.g. Ervynck et al. this volume). This article presents one further such study: an analysis of dental microwear patterning in domestic pigs from selected Late Iron Age to medieval contexts in England, undertaken as part of a wider project into the potential application of dental microwear analysis to the question of pig diet and management in the prehistoric and historic past (Mainland et al. in prep.). Dental microwear analysis, although still primarily used within palaeontology (Teaford 1994; Rose & Ungar 1998), is increasingly being applied in archaeology to reconstruct both human (Rose & Ungar 1998; Schmidt 2001) and animal diet (Beuls et al. 2000; Mainland & Halstead 2004). In common with many other palaeodietary techniques (e.g. Schwarcz & Schoeninger 1991), dental microwear will not identify the consumption of individual foodstuffs but rather reflects broad functional and/or dietary adaptations (Rose & Ungar 1998); for example, browsing vs grazing (Solounias & Hayek 1993), folivory vs frugivory (Teaford & Walker 1984), hard vs soft diet (Teaford & Oyen 1989). Preliminary studies in modern suid populations have indicated that one basic axis of variation in pig diet/management is potentially identifiable using dental microwear, namely the separation of indoor-reared/stall-fed and outdoor reared/rooting populations (Ward & Mainland 1999).

Abstract:
Several months after Catie died, Steve asked his sister-in-law to watch his daughters for a few hours so he could spend time with his six-year-old son. David seemed to be doing well but Steve sensed he needed a little one-on-one time with his Dad. They spent the morning together cooking breakfast, playing outside, and building Legos at the kitchen table. David loved having his father’s undivided attention. After they had been playing for a few minutes, Steve asked him how much he thought about his mother. I still feel bad about what I did—about how I made Mommy die.” “Wait, what?” “Because of when I hurt Mommy. Remember? That day she came home from the hospital and I hurt her real bad.” “That day” had occurred nearly two years earlier. Excited to finally have his mother back home, David jumped into her arms and gave her a big hug. Catie winced and immediately grabbed her right shoulder, which was still tender from surgery and radiation. David immediately let go and backed away. His mother, now grimacing, tried to take deep breaths to ease the pain. After a few minutes, she told him that she was okay but that he needed to be gentler with her. Steve had not thought about the incident since the day it happened. Considering all he and his family had been through, it had barely registered in his memory. Sitting at the kitchen table, he asked his son what he remembered. David talked about how he made his mother sick by hugging her too hard. Since he had made her sick, he was the reason she died. “Buddy, no. No, no, no. That’s not it at all.” Realizing that his son had been thinking this way for almost two years made Steve nauseous. He placed his hands on David’s shoulders and looked him in the eyes, making sure he had his full attention. He explained that the hug had absolutely nothing to do with his mother dying. “You and your sisters were the reasons that Mommy lived as long as she did.

Abstract:
The rock shelter of the Roc-aux-Sorciers at Angles-sur-lAnglin (Vienne, France) is one of the archaeological reference sites for the Upper Paleolithic. The sculpted, painted and engraved frieze was gradually brought to light in its archaeological context by Susanne Cassou de Saint-Mathurin and Dorothy Garrod from 1949 onwards (Saint-Mathurin, Garrod, 1950). A wealth of archaeological material was discovered alongside the parietal art, comprising numerous works of portable art, tools made of animal bone, jewellery, etc. It was very rapidly observed that the portable art and the parietal art shared the same graphic and thematic conventions. For example, images of female bodies are rendered in high relief, in a monumental way, but also in the form of small statuettes. Our research has demonstrated the undeniable intra-site links between the portable art and the parietal art (Pinon, 2012). Here we propose to broaden this analysis within a well-identified culture of the Middle Magdalenian known as the Magdalenian of Lussac-Angles spearpoints. At the time of the discovery of the Magdalenian site of La Marche in 1937 (Vienne) (Lwoff, Pricard, 1940), some similarities had been identified between this site and that of Le Roc-aux-Sorciers, where the discoveries dated back to 1927 (Rousseau, 1933). These similarities are also perceptible in shared techniques (Chehmana, Beyries, 2010), as well as in the production of objects in hard organic materials such as the Lussac-Angles spearpoints (Pinon, 1988), the jewellery in fossil mammoth ivory (Dujardin, Pinon, 2000), the engraved horse incisors (Mazire, 2009) and the figurative art (Bourdier et al., 2016 Fuentes, 2016). We propose to further explore the links between these two sites through the analysis of the dynamic processes of reworking images. In particular we examine the engraved plaquettes of La Marche and the parietal art of Le Roc-aux-Sorciers to bring these links into perspective. This could shed light on some common ways of seeing the world in this Magdalenian group. Bourdier, C., Pinon, G., Bosselin, B. (2016).
