Abstract:
AbstractIn a previous paper, the potential automorphy of certain Galois representations to GLn for n even was established, following the work of Harris, Shepherd–Barron and Taylor and using the lifting theorems of Clozel, Harris and Taylor. In this paper, we extend those results to n=3 and n=5, and conditionally to all other odd n. The key additional tools necessary are results which give the automorphy or potential automorphy of symmetric powers of elliptic curves, most notably those of Gelbert, Jacquet, Kim, Shahidi and Harris.

Abstract:
Abstract The aim of this paper is (1) to briefly define the essence of integrationist semiology/linguistics (especially in Roy Harris’ works – e.g. Harris 1981, 1984, 1998a) and to present a set of basic methodological beliefs that can be considered as a principal critique of traditional (so called segregationist) linguistics / semiology. Among the most important integrationist beliefs are the non-privilege of linguistic acts in human communication (the principle of contemporality), contextualism (the sign form is not independent of the sign substance) and the inseparability of rules from their application. On this basis the paper (2) outlines the basic aspects of integrationist convictions about the relationship between the sign and the text and their comparison with Rastier’s (2015) interpretative semantics. In conclusion (3) the article discusses one current form of the philosophy of language (Pettersson, 2017) that is – to a certain extent – based on integrationism. Overall, the paper attempts to draw attention to the fact that integrationist theory in many cases provides an adequate critical reflection of traditional semiological/linguistic methodology, but in a closer look it shows that it cannot offer a robust theoretical alternative.

In this critical personal narrative Harris explores some of the gaps between conceptions of feminist thought and feminist practice. Harris focuses on an analysis of race, class, and desire divisions within feminist sexual politics. She suggests a queer black feminist theory and practice that calls into question naturalized identities and communities, and therefore what feminism and feminist practices might entail.

Abstract:
In a recent article, Harris (2003) concluded that the data do not support the existence of evolved sex differences in jealousy. Harris' review correctly identifies fatal flaws in three lines of evidence (spousal abuse, homicide, morbid jealousy), but her criticism of two other lines of evidence (self-report responses, psychophysiological measures) is based, in part, on a mischaracterization of the evolutionary psychological theory and a misunderstanding of the empirical implications of the theory. When interpreted according to the correct criterion (i.e., an interaction between sex and infidelity type), self-report studies (both forced-choice and non-forced choice) offer strong support for the existence of sex differences in jealousy. Psychophysiological data also offer some support, although these data are weakened by validity-related concerns. In addition, some refutational evidence cited by Harris (responses to real infidelity, responses under cognitive load) actually does not refute the theory. An integrative model that describes how jealousy might result from the interaction of sociocultural variables and evolved sex differences and suggestions for future research directions are discussed.

Abstract:
AbstractWhat explains the passage of Thailand's landmark universal healthcare (UHC) policy? In separate contributions, Selway and Harris emphasized the role of electoral rules and political parties, on one hand, and “professional movements” of developmentally minded state bureaucrats on the other. Which is correct? In this article, Selway and Harris respond to each other's work. While Selway agrees that the actions of the professional movement constitute an underappreciated necessary condition for universal healthcare in Thailand, he argues that Harris overstates the role of the movement in implementation. Harris defends his position and maintains that an institution-focused account is insufficient, arguing that the actions of Thailand's Rural Doctors’ Movement not only explain universal healthcare but also gave rise to the very electoral rule changes that Selway argues were so critical to facilitating universal coverage. Selway responds to these criticisms, and the two researchers jointly consider implications for causation, qualitative research, and policymaking theory.

Abstract:
AbstractThis paper examines the idea that ethics might be understood as a domain of straightforwardly empirical inquiry with reference to two of its defenders. Sam Harris has recently urged that ethics is simply the scientific study of welfare and how best to maximize it. That is of course to presuppose the truth of utilitarianism, something Harris considers too obvious to be sensibly contested. Richard Boyd's more nuanced and thoughtful position takes the truth of the ethical theory – homeostatic consequentialism – he favours to be determined by what best explains the success of moral practice over its history. But what is to count here as success is too theory dependent for this to be helpful. From consideration of both Harris and Boyd, the conclusion emerges that once we have satisfied ourselves by ethical reflection about what we ought to do, it may then be a straightforwardly empirical question how to do it, but that arriving at that point, the core concern of the moral philosopher, is far less clearly a straightforwardly empirical affair.

Abstract:
This Review concerns recent results on the quantitative study of convergence toward the stationary state for spatially inhomogeneous kinetic equations. We focus on analytical results obtained by means of certain probabilistic techniques from the ergodic theory of Markov processes. These techniques are sometimes referred to as Harris-type theorems. They provide constructive proofs for convergence results in the L1 (or total variation) setting for a large class of initial data. The convergence rates can be made explicit (for both geometric and sub-geometric rates) by tracking the constants appearing in the hypotheses. Harris-type theorems are particularly well-adapted for equations exhibiting non-explicit and non-equilibrium steady states since they do not require prior information on the existence of stationary states. This allows for significant improvements of some already-existing results by relaxing assumptions and providing explicit convergence rates. We aim to present Harris-type theorems, providing a guideline on how to apply these techniques to kinetic equations at hand. We discuss recent quantitative results obtained for kinetic equations in gas theory and mathematical biology, giving some perspectives on potential extensions to nonlinear equations.

Abstract:
Accurate descriptions of intermolecular interactions are of great importance in simulations of molecular liquids. We present an electronic structure method that combines the accuracy of the Harris functional approach with the computational efficiency of approximately linear-scaling density functional theory (DFT). The non-variational nature of the Harris functional has been addressed by constructing a Lagrangian energy functional, which restores the variational condition by imposing stationarity with respect to the reference density. The associated linear response equations may be treated with linear-scaling efficiency in an atomic orbital based scheme. Key ingredients to describe the structural and dynamical properties of molecular systems are the forces acting on the atoms and the stress tensor. These first-order derivatives of the Harris Lagrangian have been derived and implemented in consistence with the energy correction. The proposed method allows for simulations with accuracies close to the Kohn–Sham DFT reference. Embedded in the CP2K program package, the method is designed to enable ab initio molecular dynamics simulations of molecular solutions for system sizes of several thousand atoms. Available subsystem DFT methods may be used to provide the reference density required for the energy correction at near linear-scaling efficiency. As an example of production applications, we applied the method to molecular dynamics simulations of the binary mixtures cyclohexane-methanol and toluene-methanol, performed within the isobaric-isothermal ensemble, to investigate the hydrogen bonding network in these non-ideal mixtures.

Abstract:
This research discussed the analysis of lexical meaning and contextual meaning on Harris J’s song lyrics that have related values in the Quran. The purpose of this study to describe the kinds of class of words, the lexical and contextual meaning and the Qur’an values which are presented to Harris J's song lyrics in SALAM Album. This research employed qualitative research and descriptive method because it was used to describe the contextual meaning found in song lyrics of Harris J. The writer used the contextual meaning theory by Mansoer Pateda to conduct this research. The data were taken from first album SALAM by Harris J, five songs they are Salam Alaikum, Rasool'Allah, I Promise, The One and You Are My Life. The first results showed that there are seven kinds of class of words, consisting of; noun, noun phrase, verb, verb phrase, adjective, adjective phrase and adverb. Also the writer found that noun phrase and verb are more dominantly found in song lyrics in the Album SALAM. Second, the contextual meaning in lyrics of the song had the meaning according to the context, but not all people know that contexts. From five songs by Harris J, there were fifteen words, phrases, or sentences found as the context. Third, there are twelve surah and fourteen verses in the Qur'an that the values of the verse relate to the song lyrics from Salam Album.

Abstract:
As a young Victoria Scholar from South Africa studying at Oxford from 1931–33, Errol Harris encountered most of the prominent representatives of “Oxford Idealism” there. He discovered that, predominantly under the influence of Bradley, they were uniformly convinced that Hegel’s Naturphilosophie was a superfluous “addition” to his system, accomplishing nothing not already provided by the Science of Logic, and that, moreover, to treat Nature as a reality (as opposed to an appearance) would introduce a fundamental contradiction into Hegel’s thought. In this general attitude they were strongly supported by the Italian “neo-Idealists” with whom they were closely engaged. In work accomplished during those two years, Harris laid the foundations for a thorough reversal of this attitude, arguing that in the absence of a philosophy of nature Hegel’s system could be neither coherent nor complete. On this basis Harris would eventually succeed in constructing the outlines of a complete cosmology grounded in twentieth-century physical theory.

Abstract:
This article is an attempt at reading Wilson Harris with Gilles Deleuze, considering how the latter’s writings on the image might produce a fresh understanding of Harris’s art of fiction. To do this, I highlight the interest that both Harris and Deleuze have in the theatre as a medium for illustrating their conception of the image in language and thought. Discussing mainly the novel Carnival, I show how Harris assimilates narrative to the theatrical medium itself as both a concrete and abstract space of spontaneous multiplicity, and relate this to Deleuze’s understanding of the image and of the text as objects of movement and of becoming. I also relate Harris’s art of fiction to Deleuze’s critique of conventional mimesis and its subject/object binarism, showing how codes and conventions of theatrical communication (and a readerly self-conscious perception of this) are injected into Harris’s narrative protocols, creating an aesthetic that communicates to or, more specifically, performs with, the reader in ways that challenge the conception of narrative as self-contained representation. In sum, this paper demonstrates the way in which Harris’s narrative evokes, and is evoked by, the play of theatre — in other words its quintessentially differential nature, through images that resist the very concept of representation.

Abstract:
Objective: This paper aims to explore and analyze the application of group counseling based on positive psychology theory in postoperative total hip arthroplasty. Methods: From July 2021 to April 2023, 110 patients with total hip arthroplasty admitted to the Department of Traumatology and Orthopedics in our hospital were selected as subjects of this study. They were divided into study group and control group by simple random sampling, with 55 cases in each group. The study group received group counseling based on positive psychology theory, and the control group received general nursing care. Harris hip function score, activities of daily living score (ADL), Hamilton depression rating scale (HAM-D), Hamilton anxiety rating scale (HAM-A), and postoperative complications were compared between the two groups. Results: Before nursing, the Harris and ADL scores of the two groups were compared, and the difference was not statistically significant (P > 0.05).
