Abstract:
It is widely acknowledged that political activities can not exist without language. Both politics and language are interrelated concepts. The relation between politics and language are widely investigated in terms of textual analysis based on language of politics. As Paul Anthony Chilton and Christina Schäffner state in the book Politics as text and talk: analytic approaches to political discourse: “<…> Aristotelian view <…> for language would have evolved to perform social functions – social functions that would in fact correspond to what we understand as ‘political’.”(Chilton and Schäffner 2002:2) Furthermore, Adrian Beard wrote how both language and politics are interrelated in his book The Language of Politics (2000:18). The author provided textual analysis of language in political discourse. The bachelor thesis explores how cohesion is used in political discourse. In this Research, Hansard, official reports of British Parliamentary debates, have been used to investigate the phenomenon of cohesion. In this paper the term “Hansard” is applied to refer to an official report of British Parliamentary debates. To be precise, two dictionaries have been chosen to define the term “Hansard”. Oxford Guide to British and American Culture for Learners of English provides the following definition of the concept “Hansard”: “the informal name for the Official Report of everything that is said in the British parliament, and in its committees.” (Oxford Guide to British and American... Abstract:
In acknowledging that the Hansard Oral Question Period records did not focus on the increasing personnel expenditures, this thesis will seek to identify and analyze how political party members convey their support or opposition for these austerity measures, during the first session of the 41st Parliament Oral Question Period exchanges; in particular, how these exchanges are structured within the setting of parliamentary debate and for what purposes. Furthermore this thesis examines, how parliamentary exchanges relate to the five (5) debate purposes identified in the literature: (1) position claiming; (2) persuading; (3) negotiating; (4) agenda-setting; and, (5) opinion-building (Ilie, 2017), within the four (4) categories identified in the review of the Hansard records; that is: safety and security concerns, Canada’s official language policies, regional cuts, and public service reductions in areas directly related to the Canadian Forces and Canadian Veterans.

Abstract:
The aim of this study is to analyse Hansard publications with regard to the language and grammatical contents thereof in a multilingual South Africa. Chapter 1 defines the problem and the purpose and relevance of the study as well as the field of research and the scope of the study. Chapter 2 provides the background and historical development of Hansard as a publication. This is followed by a discussion of the prevailing conventions and expectations of this publication and the political importance attached to it within South Africa as well as other countries of the world. Chapter 3 reviews translation theories formulated by various language experts, and considers the viability of these in relation to Hansard publications in South Africa. The impact of culture on this conventional verbatim publication is investigated and comparisons are drawn between the translations of the different South African languages. Consideration is given to how practical and feasible the verbatim convention of Hansard is in the written reproduction of political speeches in the floor languages used in the National Parliament and the nine Provincial Legislatures, as well as the expectation of verbatim translations of such speeches and debates. Chapter 4 provides an extensive number of examples and discussions of typical language and translation errors found in the different Hansard publications of South Africa. Chapter 5 analyses the editing techniques of the editors of Hansard publications and the accessibility to the readers of the end product. Chapter 6 provides the findings and conclusions and makes suggestions for a change in the conventional verbatim approach that is still followed -to the detriment of the end product -in the majority of the publications studied for this research project. This chapter also offers suggestions for further research that could be of benefit to this field of study.

Abstract:
Talking to a computer is hard. Large vocabulary automatic speech recognition (ASR) systems are difficult to use and yet they are used by many people in their daily work. This thesis addresses the question: How is ASR used and made usable and useful in the workplace now? To answer these questions I went into two workplaces where ASR is currently used and one where ASR could be used in the future. This field work was done with designing in mind. ASR dictation systems are currently used in the Australian Public Service (APS) by people who suffer chronic workplace overuse injuries and in the Hansard department of Parliament House (Hansard) by un-injured people. Analysing the experiences of the users in the APS and at Hansard showed that using an ASR system in the workplace follows a broad trajectory that ends in the continued effort to maintain its usefulness. The usefulness of the ASR systems is performed into existence by the users with varying degrees of success. For both the APS and Hansard users, they use ASR to allow work to be performed; ASR acts to bridge the gap between otherwise incompatible ways of working. This thesis also asks: How could ASR be used and made usable and useful in workplaces in the future? To answer this question, I observed the work of communicating sentences at the ACT Magistrates Court. Communicating sentences is a process that is distributed in space and time throughout the Court and embodied in a set of documents that have a co-ordinating role. A design for an ASR system that supports the process of communicating sentences while respecting existing work process is described. Moving from field work to design is problematic. This thesis performs the process of moving from field work to design, as described above, and reflects the use of various analytic methods used to distill insights from field work data. The contributions of this thesis are: The pragmatic use of existing social research methods and their antecedents as a corpus of analyses to inspire new designs; vi a demonstration of the use of Actor-Network Theory in design both as critique and as part of a design process; empirical field-work evidence of how large vocabulary ASR is used in the workplace; a design showing how ASR could be introduced to the rich, complicated, environment of the ACT Magistrates Court; and, a performance of the process of moving from field work to design.

Abstract:
The understanding of competitive strategy as it is presented in scientific literature by many scientists is being analyzed in the master’s work. The theoretical presumption of competitive acquisition is analyzed. Following the methodology of strategy formation proposed by R. Jucevičius, G. T. Palubinskas, A. Vasiliauskas, the competitive strategy formation model of financial enterprises is prepared which consists of the analysis of external and internal environment, preparation of competitive strategy, evaluation and implementation. Appealing to the competitive strategy formation model in the financial enterprise, the competitive strategy of Joint Stock Company „Hansa Lizingas” which functions in Lithuanian leasing market, has been formed. Modeling the competitive strategy of Joint Stock Company „Hansa Lizingas” the PEST model was used to evaluate the external environment, and the analysis of competitive environment was carried out. Evaluating the competitive ability of the company, SWOT and internal section analysis were applied. The manager of the Joint Stock Company Hansa Lizingas” was interviewed.

Abstract:
Mid-seventeenth-century England saw numerous religious sects come into existence, one of which was the Calvinistic Baptist group. During the upheaveal of the revolutionary years this group was often accused of heresy by their orthodox/reformed contemporaries. At that time Hanserd Knollys, one of their London pastors, was personally charged with holding heterodox beliefs, in particular, Antinomianism, Anabaptism and Fifth Monarchism. In addition, Knollys has been accused of hyper-Calvinism. This version of Calvinism was held by some eighteenth-century English Calvinistic Baptists. Some Baptist historians have suspected Knollys of holding this teaching in the seventeenth-century, or at least they have felt it necessary to defend him against it. All of these charges are serious, and consequently bring into question Knollys' orthodoxy. This thesis will systematically examine each charge made against Knollys in its context, and comprehensively from Knollys' writings seek to determine if they were valid. Furthermore, this thesis will elucidate Knollys theology, particularly his soteriology, ecclesiology and eschatology.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis contributes to the burgeoning field of the history of sexuality in New Zealand and seeks to distill the more theorised and reflexive understanding of the subjectively understood queer male identity since 1948. Emerging from the disciplines of History and English, this project draws from a range of narratological materials: parliamentary debates contained in Hansard, and novels and short stories written by men with publicly avowed queer identities. This thesis explores how both 'normative' identity and the category of 'the homosexual' were constructed and mobilised in the public domain, in this case, the House of Representatives. It shows that members of the House have engaged with an extensive tradition of defining and excluding; a process by which state and public discourses have constructed largely unified, negative and othering narratives of 'the homosexual'. This constitutes an overarching narrative of queer experience which, until the mid-1990s, excluded queer subjects from its construction. At the same time, fictional narratives offer an adjacent body of knowledge and thought for queer men and women. This thesis posits literature's position as an important and productive space for queer resistance and critique. Such texts typically engage with and subvert 'dominant' or 'normative' understandings of sexuality and disturb efforts to apprehend precise or linear histories of 'gay liberation' and 'gay consciousness'. Drawing from the works of Frank Sargeson, James Courage, Bill Pearson, Noel Virtue, Stevan Eldred-Grigg, and Peter Wells, this thesis argues for a revaluing of fictional narratives as active texts from which historians can construct a matrix of cultural experience, while allowing for, and explaining, the determining role such narratives play in the discursively constructed understandings of gender and sexuality in New Zealand.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Knowledge about future customer flow can be very important when trying to optimize a business, especially for an insurance company like Trygg-Hansa since the customer flow is connected to the risk exposure for the company. In this thesis it is shown how customer volume for certain time periods can be estimated using stratification of data and univariate time series models. From this a simulated customer flow can be created using stratified sampling from the historical population. Two different stratification approaches were tested, an expert-driven approach using visualization to partition the population in to smaller subsets, and a data-driven approach using a regression tree. It was found that both approaches were able to capture seasonal effects and trends and delivered better results than the current method used by the company today. However, due to the fact the neither of the methods outperformed the other, it is not possible to determine which of the methods that is the best one, and that should be implemented. It is therefore recommended that both methods needs to be investigated further. It was also found that the variation in population, when considering the effect on the company's risk exposure, mattered less than the customer volume.

Abstract:
Introduction: The lateral epicondylalgia (LE) is characterized by a musculoskeletal disorder involving the common extensor tendon which is originated at the lateral epicondyle. The Functional Impairment Test-Hand, and Neck/ Shoulder/Arm - FIT-HANSA was developed to analyze the performance during three tasks that perform repetitive activities of the upper limb elevation, and sustained postures, in patients with dysfunction in the shoulder, measured up to 300 seconds. The aim of this study was to evaluate the reliability and validity of FIT-HANSA in patients with LE and evaluate the biomechanical strategies used by the upper limb during the execution of this test. Method: A Brazilian version of FIT-HANSA device has been developed. The study included 10 healthy volunteers and 20 patients with LE. For the analysis of reliability we used the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) with a confidence interval (CI) of 95%, using the SPSS. For the analysis of the construct validity, the Spearman\'s correlation coefficient (r) was calculated in Software Mini Tab®. They were collected handgrip data, pain threshold and questionnaire DASH. Electromyographic data was collected using a Delsys® (Trigno® Wireless Systems) equipment. The preparation of skin followed the recommendations of SENIAM Project. The electrodes were placed in the trunk muscles, back, arm and forearm. For kinematic analysis we used a software for 3D image analysis (Vicon Motion Systems Ltd ®), composed of 8 infrared cameras, which capture the movement through 16 reflective markers. Kinematic and electromyographic data were acquired synchronized and simultaneously via Vicon Nexus® Software and signal processing was performed offline in Matlab® software. Statistical analysis was performed by means of analysis of variance (ANOVA) and post hoc Bonferroni (p <= 0.05). Results: The average time of the tasks 1, 2 and 3 were, respectively, 300s, 297s e 268s for the asymptomatic group and 249s, 141s e 264s for the patient group. The test showed between excellent and good test-retest reliability for the asymptomatic group for the tasks 1, 2 and 3 respectively 0.99 (0.91 to 0.99) and 0.89 (0.02 to 0.98) and 0.95 (0.54 to 0.99), and the group patients, excellent reliability for tasks 1 and 2 respectively, 0.98 (0.82 to 0.99) and 0.92 (0.29 to 0.99) and not acceptable for the task 3 0.60 (-2.76 to 0.95), without changing the painful pattern after the test. Moderate correlation was found between the average score of the test and pain (r = 0.67) and grip strength (r = 0.56) and weak correlation between the test and DASH questionnaire (r = -0.42). The long extensor Carpi ulnaris muscle was significantly active during the course of the three tasks. Conclusion: The adapted version of the FIT-HANSA-Br showed to be valid and reproducible for patients with LE. The main biomechanical strategy was greater activation of the extensor carpi ulnaris muscle with more ulnar deviation performed to hold the load-displacement. This tool can be used as an outcome variable in clinical studies to assess the effectiveness of physical therapy resources in the conservative treatment of LE.

Abstract:
Social media is a relatively new phenomenon that has had a huge impact in the way we communicate in recent years. Today it is used daily by almost everyone and has become a billion dollar industry where corporate existence is increasing by every day. But there is not entirely safe to work with social media since customers and visitors can make comments and investigate what others are writing about the brand and form their own opinion. The purpose of this study is to explain the potential advantages and disadvantages for organizations in vulnerable industries with a focus on insurance companies who works with Facebook. The paper takes its starting point in the convergence culture that explains a cultural shift where consumers are encouraged to search for new information and combine content from different media. This is supplemented by a study by de Vries et al. (2012) who has analyzed what factors determines the popularity of a brandpost. In addition, brand-building theory, communication theory, relationship marketing and transparency is utilized to answer the essays questions and achieve the purpose of this study. The study was made with the help of a triangulation-method including interviews, qualitative analysis and a quantitative method. By performing a triangulation, the combination of these methods creates a greater understanding of the industry and more reliable data. The results of the study show that all insurance companies have a positive attitude to social media and understand the increasing transparency it brings by working with Facebook. In addition, the study shows that an integration of social media in the marketing mix should be prioritized so all elements are working to achieve the same objective. To create a successful posting in number of like-markings the study shows that it needs uniqueness, a unique date or event. In order to create more awareness for these unique posts, it should be published with a photo or video. Furthermore, the quantitative results shows that having a strong brand creates no obvious successes in social media, what mainly matters is the work being performed.

Abstract:

This study explores language usage in the pol it ical arena, as seen in the parliamentary debates of the new South Africa. The parliamentary Afrikaans used between February 1990 and June 1991 has been selected as field of invest igat ion, because this period can be seen as an important transitional phase in the political history of South Africa. This period has definitely had an influence on the lexicon used in parliament. The parliamentary debates, as recorded in the tlansards of 2 February 1990 21 June 1991. have been used as primary sources. These debates contain the most important semantic and terminological changes that occurred in the parliamentary lexicon. This study is based on the Sapir-Wharf hypothesis (the theory of relativity) which states that a close link exists between language and thought, and language and reality. Whorf believes that language can actually shape and influence the human mind. This Induces people to experience reality in different ways. The following concepts are used to illustrate how political language in general, and parliamentary language in particular has been influenced by the process of pol i tical thought in the new South Africa: Afrikaner, volk, nssl, delDokrasie, serest/she/d, selykberegt/s/ng, groep etc. A summary of the parliamentary lexicon gives an indication of the variety of meanings that have evolved from various concepts. This has occurred because political parties uphold their own interpretations of these concepts...

Stoneman, Lorinda. "Community-based responses to youth offending: politics, policy and practice under the Youth Criminal Justice Act." Thesis, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/1828/7154.

Full text
Abstract:
This research focused on diversion and community-based alternatives to custody for young offenders. For the purposes of this research, diversion, and community-based responses to youth crime include informal processes and non-incarcerating sanctions utilized for young offenders for the purposes of diverting youth away from the formal justice system at any juncture, and/or reintegrating that offender within the community. Measures of interest included extrajudicial measures, extra-judicial sanctions, conferencing, restorative justice, and intensive support and supervision under the YCJA (2002). This research followed a qualitative approach to examine policy and practice. Phase 1 involved an examination of over a decade of policy-related discussions within the House of Commons and Senate as well as their respective committees and resulting legislation reported by Legisinfo. Initially, all transcripts were examined. At a later stage, a proportional stratified random sample was drawn, restricting the sample to 32 items. Phase 2 involved semi-structured interviews conducted with 14 professionals in the field of youth justice with the aim of accessing practice narratives on policy implementation. Chain-referral and maximum variation sampling techniques were employed to access a diverse group of professionals including police, youth workers, restorative justice personnel and probation officers in the regions of Greater Vancouver, the Fraser Valley and Vancouver Island in the province of British Columbia. Participants ranged in length of service from one year to over 35 years. Thematic narrative analysis of phases 1 and 2 occurred iteratively with data collection. In this dissertation, I present findings regarding community youth justice measures at three levels: the operational/practice level, the policy-making level and the macro socio-political level. Specifically, findings related to the operational level include: insufficient resources available to individual workers; narrowing the net of youth who are eligible for services; a reliance on informal and formal charitable contributions to provide basic youth justice services; and outsourcing of diversion strategies by government to community organizations. On a policy-making level, I discuss findings related to the complex fusion of restorative justice and diversion strategies; the substitution of anecdotes for evidence in policy-making; and the simple rather than complex stories used to frame the “youth justice problem” by policy-makers. Finally, on the macro socio-political level, I highlight the reversal of the welfare state and the associated implications of this reversal. I analyze and discuss the impacts that ideological and policy shifts have on policy-making and individual practice, notably on the efforts of professionals who must begin the work of closing the gaps in youth justice services, and who do so based on their own understanding of social responsibility and the “ethos of care.” This research contributes to the body of work on youth justice in Canada by exploring the connections and disconnects between policy discourses at each of the political, policy and practice levels and highlights how such a multi-dimensional analysis is a meaningful way to assess an important social policy issue.

Moon, Scott Geoffrey. "Aero-structural Optimization of Divergence-critical Wings." Thesis, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/1807/18911.

Full text
Abstract:
This study investigates the use of the divergence speed as an additional constraint to a multi-disciplinary optimization (MDO) problem. The goal of the project is to expand the MDO toolbox by adding an aeroelastic module used where the aeroelastic characteristics present a possible safety hazard. This paper examines aeroelastic theory and MDO disciplines. The divergence constraint function is developed on a BAH wing. The optimization problem is executed on the HANSA HFB 320 transport jet using the FEAP structural solver and a Vortex Lattice Method as the aerodynamic solver. The study shows that divergence speed can function as a safety constraint but the stress constraints determine the optimum design. Furthermore, obtaining a true divergence constraint will require a finer mesh, a more efficient aerodynamic solver and non-finite difference approach to gradient determination. Thus, the addition of the divergence constraint does not yet directly benefit this MDO framework.

Ferreira, Cátia Beatriz da Costa. "Investigating surface treatments and coatings, their history, application and detection on selected pigments: Umber, Vine Black, Ultramarine Blue, Cu-Phthalocyanine Blue, and two Hansa Yellows, PY3 and PY74." Master's thesis, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/10362/59825.

Abstract:
Pigment manufacture in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries has largely been intended for industrial application. Consequently, the artist’s materials market which is by contrast very small and specialized, relies on pigments produced for the industrial market. Improvements to enhance performance in an industrial context, has led to the introduction of a variety of different surface treatments applied to pigment particles. Pigment coatings can consist of one or more thin layers of either organic or inorganic material, or a combination of both. Their nature and their presence in very small amounts present a challenge for the detection and identification of these compounds. Part I of this thesis explores the literature covering pigment coating materials, application methods and the terminology used to identify the range and types of materials in use. Part II explores the analytical strategies that can be employed to detect these treatments on pigment samples. The pigments selected for this research include: Umber and Vine Black purchased from Kremer Pigmente during the Carlyle MOLART Fellowship for the creation of “historically accurate” paint reconstructions; Ultramarine Blue pigments since the use of coatings on these pigments is reported in the literature (for greater acid resistance); Cu-Phthalocyanine Blue pigments as these are currently amongst the most popular blue pigments; and the Hansa yellows, PY3 and PY74 from the manufacturer Royal Talens to determine the possible presence of a surface treatment or coating which could be responsible for paint instability. Analytical methods employed for this thesis work to characterize the organic fraction on pigments surfaces included: Evolved Gas Analysis Mass spectrometry (EGA/MS); Pyrolysis Gas Chromatography Mass Spectrometry (Py-GC/MS); Py-GC/MS using thermally assisted hydrolysis and methylation (THM) with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS) in combination with ultrafast thermal desorption (UTD), meaning the samples were investigated through “slow pyrolysis” and not as flash pyrolysis. This method, developed at RCE, involves a temperature program that enables a one-shot analysis with evaporation before pyrolysis. To characterize inorganic materials, the following instruments were used: Scanning Electron Microscope Energy Dispersive X-ray (SEM-EDX); (Scanning) Transmission Electron Microscope Energy Dispersive X-ray ((S) TEM-EDX); and Field Emission Gun Scanning Electron Microscope (FEG-SEM). Surface treatments influence the physical properties of pigments during the manufacture of coatings, including oil paints. By understanding their applications and chemistry and determining methods for identifying them in situ on pigment particles, their influence on the long-term stability within modern artist’s oil paint can be assessed.
