Abstract:
The article analyses how crucial the Irish origin and long-term busking experience were in shaping the artistic habitus of Glen Hansard. Using Pierre Bourdieu’s terminology and Benedict Anderson’s characteristic of “imagined communities”, the author presents the variety of ways in which Hansard’s “habitus of the Irish busker” reveals itself. Seen from the perspective of the sociology of art, the artist’s statements, lyrics, music videos, projects and social initiatives reflect the point of view of a niche artist, strongly dissociating himself from the “entertainment” sector. They also show how grounded Hansard’s position in the artistic field was before his unexpected 2007 Oscar win for Best Original Song.

Abstract:
This article highlights the nature of parliamentary debates in the Dewan Rakyat (House of Representatives) of the Malaysian Parliament related to the poverty issues in Malaysia. Using qualitative research technique, it focuses on the untold story of poverty in Malaysia that buried in the Dewan Rakyat Hansard. Analysing poverty issues qualitatively, however, can be ambiguous and open to challenge. Despite the success story of poverty eradication in Malaysia, poverty issues have always been debated in almost every parliament proceeding in the Dewan Rakyat. If Malaysia is so successful in eradicating poverty, why the Members of Parliament (MPs) are still debating the issue in the Dewan Rakyat to date? To understand this issue, it uses Hansard records of the Dewan Rakyat (1990-2012) to narrate the multifaceted of poverty issues in both rural and urban consistencies in Malaysia, qualitatively. It reevaluates the previous works on poverty in Malaysia by examining the debates extracted from the Dewan Rakyat Hansard. The aim is to understand whether and to what extent the poverty eradication agendas have benefited communities and spilled over throughout the constituencies in Malaysia.Key words: The Malaysian Parliament, Hansard, Members of Parliament, Dewan Rakyat; poverty eradication AbstrakArtikel ini menyajikan prediksi perdebatan tentang isu kemiskinan di Malaysia yang diungkapkan di Dewan Perwakilan Rakyat, Parlemen Malaysia.

Abstract:
This paper considers the representation of spoken political discourse through the transcription practices of the House of Commons. It considers how the Hansard method of transcription represents the oral debates during the weekly parliamentary sessions of Prime Minister’s questions in three areas: lexical and grammatical fidelity, performance characteristics and interruptions from the audience. The paper also considers how accurately and faithfully speakers in the House quote from Hansard during these sessions as they pursue their arguments. The findings suggest that while Hansard does what it purports to do, modern transcription methods and digital representations necessitate additional tools to augment this system. We argue the case for a more representational, multi-tool approach to the transcription of discourse.

Abstract:
This article examines how politicians have applied evaluative-descriptive terms as rhetorical levers to a pivotal basic concept, illustrating the broader rhetorical strategy of dissociation identified by Chaim Perelman and Lucie Olbrechts-Tyteca. It focuses on political debates around capitalism that took place in late twentieth- and early twenty-first-century British politics, including the period following the financial crisis of 2008. Drawing on data from the Enhanced Hansard Corpus and Hansard Online, together with other contemporary texts, it combines quantitative and qualitative analyses using a corpus-based approach to identify salient items that are then placed in their discursive and sociopolitical contexts. More generally, the article seeks to bridge part of the gap between Koselleckian Begriff sgeschichte and Quentin Skinner’s rhetorical approach by applying what is in effect a historical-pragmatic approach to the history of political concepts.

Abstract:
“Colloquialization,” and anti-colloquial effects such as “densification,” have been shown to shape register change in English, with Australian English showing stronger effects of colloquiality than British English. Parliamentary Hansard records are at the intersection of writing and speech and are subject to various influencing factors possibly leading to change in this register, which we represent in a conceptual model. We apply Biber’s (1988) method of multidimensional analysis to examine the co-occurrence of linguistic features in the British and Australian Hansard over five consecutive time periods. The data provide evidence of shared as well as differentiated effects of colloquialization and densification across the two varieties. The evidence also points to a new type of anti-colloquial trend observed in the parliamentary register, whereby presentation of information appears to be taking the place of a more interactive and interpersonally oriented style, a trend we term “monologization.”

Abstract:
Large databases of transcribed speech, downloadable from the Internet, are a corpus linguist's dream. They turn into a corpus linguist's nightmare, however, when the transcriptions are not linguistically accurate. In this paper I assess the suitability of the Hansard parliamentary transcripts (200 million words, downloadable) as a corpus linguistic resource, comparing a sample of the official transcript to a transcript made from a recording of a House of Commons session. The findings are that, as could be expected from earlier research, the transcripts omit performance characteristics of spoken language, such as incomplete utterances or hesitations, as well as any type of extrafactual, contextual talk (e.g., about turn-taking). Moreover, however, the transcribers and editors also alter speakers' lexical and grammatical choices towards more conservative and formal variants. Linguists ought, therefore, to be cautious in their use of the Hansard transcripts and, generally, in the use of transcriptions that have not been made for linguistic purposes.

Abstract:
It is widely acknowledged that political activities can not exist without language. Both politics and language are interrelated concepts. The relation between politics and language are widely investigated in terms of textual analysis based on language of politics. As Paul Anthony Chilton and Christina Schäffner state in the book Politics as text and talk: analytic approaches to political discourse: “<…> Aristotelian view <…> for language would have evolved to perform social functions – social functions that would in fact correspond to what we understand as ‘political’.”(Chilton and Schäffner 2002:2) Furthermore, Adrian Beard wrote how both language and politics are interrelated in his book The Language of Politics (2000:18). The author provided textual analysis of language in political discourse. The bachelor thesis explores how cohesion is used in political discourse. In this Research, Hansard, official reports of British Parliamentary debates, have been used to investigate the phenomenon of cohesion. In this paper the term “Hansard” is applied to refer to an official report of British Parliamentary debates. To be precise, two dictionaries have been chosen to define the term “Hansard”. Oxford Guide to British and American Culture for Learners of English provides the following definition of the concept “Hansard”: “the informal name for the Official Report of everything that is said in the British parliament, and in its committees.” (Oxford Guide to British and American... Abstract:
In acknowledging that the Hansard Oral Question Period records did not focus on the increasing personnel expenditures, this thesis will seek to identify and analyze how political party members convey their support or opposition for these austerity measures, during the first session of the 41st Parliament Oral Question Period exchanges; in particular, how these exchanges are structured within the setting of parliamentary debate and for what purposes. Furthermore this thesis examines, how parliamentary exchanges relate to the five (5) debate purposes identified in the literature: (1) position claiming; (2) persuading; (3) negotiating; (4) agenda-setting; and, (5) opinion-building (Ilie, 2017), within the four (4) categories identified in the review of the Hansard records; that is: safety and security concerns, Canada’s official language policies, regional cuts, and public service reductions in areas directly related to the Canadian Forces and Canadian Veterans.

Abstract:
The aim of this study is to analyse Hansard publications with regard to the language and grammatical contents thereof in a multilingual South Africa. Chapter 1 defines the problem and the purpose and relevance of the study as well as the field of research and the scope of the study. Chapter 2 provides the background and historical development of Hansard as a publication. This is followed by a discussion of the prevailing conventions and expectations of this publication and the political importance attached to it within South Africa as well as other countries of the world. Chapter 3 reviews translation theories formulated by various language experts, and considers the viability of these in relation to Hansard publications in South Africa. The impact of culture on this conventional verbatim publication is investigated and comparisons are drawn between the translations of the different South African languages. Consideration is given to how practical and feasible the verbatim convention of Hansard is in the written reproduction of political speeches in the floor languages used in the National Parliament and the nine Provincial Legislatures, as well as the expectation of verbatim translations of such speeches and debates. Chapter 4 provides an extensive number of examples and discussions of typical language and translation errors found in the different Hansard publications of South Africa. Chapter 5 analyses the editing techniques of the editors of Hansard publications and the accessibility to the readers of the end product. Chapter 6 provides the findings and conclusions and makes suggestions for a change in the conventional verbatim approach that is still followed -to the detriment of the end product -in the majority of the publications studied for this research project. This chapter also offers suggestions for further research that could be of benefit to this field of study.

Abstract:
Talking to a computer is hard. Large vocabulary automatic speech recognition (ASR) systems are difficult to use and yet they are used by many people in their daily work. This thesis addresses the question: How is ASR used and made usable and useful in the workplace now? To answer these questions I went into two workplaces where ASR is currently used and one where ASR could be used in the future. This field work was done with designing in mind. ASR dictation systems are currently used in the Australian Public Service (APS) by people who suffer chronic workplace overuse injuries and in the Hansard department of Parliament House (Hansard) by un-injured people. Analysing the experiences of the users in the APS and at Hansard showed that using an ASR system in the workplace follows a broad trajectory that ends in the continued effort to maintain its usefulness. The usefulness of the ASR systems is performed into existence by the users with varying degrees of success. For both the APS and Hansard users, they use ASR to allow work to be performed; ASR acts to bridge the gap between otherwise incompatible ways of working. This thesis also asks: How could ASR be used and made usable and useful in workplaces in the future? To answer this question, I observed the work of communicating sentences at the ACT Magistrates Court. Communicating sentences is a process that is distributed in space and time throughout the Court and embodied in a set of documents that have a co-ordinating role. A design for an ASR system that supports the process of communicating sentences while respecting existing work process is described. Moving from field work to design is problematic. This thesis performs the process of moving from field work to design, as described above, and reflects the use of various analytic methods used to distill insights from field work data. The contributions of this thesis are: The pragmatic use of existing social research methods and their antecedents as a corpus of analyses to inspire new designs; vi a demonstration of the use of Actor-Network Theory in design both as critique and as part of a design process; empirical field-work evidence of how large vocabulary ASR is used in the workplace; a design showing how ASR could be introduced to the rich, complicated, environment of the ACT Magistrates Court; and, a performance of the process of moving from field work to design.

Abstract:
The understanding of competitive strategy as it is presented in scientific literature by many scientists is being analyzed in the master’s work. The theoretical presumption of competitive acquisition is analyzed. Following the methodology of strategy formation proposed by R. Jucevičius, G. T. Palubinskas, A. Vasiliauskas, the competitive strategy formation model of financial enterprises is prepared which consists of the analysis of external and internal environment, preparation of competitive strategy, evaluation and implementation. Appealing to the competitive strategy formation model in the financial enterprise, the competitive strategy of Joint Stock Company „Hansa Lizingas” which functions in Lithuanian leasing market, has been formed. Modeling the competitive strategy of Joint Stock Company „Hansa Lizingas” the PEST model was used to evaluate the external environment, and the analysis of competitive environment was carried out. Evaluating the competitive ability of the company, SWOT and internal section analysis were applied. The manager of the Joint Stock Company Hansa Lizingas” was interviewed.

Abstract:
Mid-seventeenth-century England saw numerous religious sects come into existence, one of which was the Calvinistic Baptist group. During the upheaveal of the revolutionary years this group was often accused of heresy by their orthodox/reformed contemporaries. At that time Hanserd Knollys, one of their London pastors, was personally charged with holding heterodox beliefs, in particular, Antinomianism, Anabaptism and Fifth Monarchism. In addition, Knollys has been accused of hyper-Calvinism. This version of Calvinism was held by some eighteenth-century English Calvinistic Baptists. Some Baptist historians have suspected Knollys of holding this teaching in the seventeenth-century, or at least they have felt it necessary to defend him against it. All of these charges are serious, and consequently bring into question Knollys' orthodoxy. This thesis will systematically examine each charge made against Knollys in its context, and comprehensively from Knollys' writings seek to determine if they were valid. Furthermore, this thesis will elucidate Knollys theology, particularly his soteriology, ecclesiology and eschatology.

Burke, Christopher J. F. "Diversity or Perversity? Investigating Queer Narratives, Resistance, and Representation in Aotearoa / New Zealand, 1948-2000." The University of Waikato, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/10289/2245.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis contributes to the burgeoning field of the history of sexuality in New Zealand and seeks to distill the more theorised and reflexive understanding of the subjectively understood queer male identity since 1948. Emerging from the disciplines of History and English, this project draws from a range of narratological materials: parliamentary debates contained in Hansard, and novels and short stories written by men with publicly avowed queer identities. This thesis explores how both 'normative' identity and the category of 'the homosexual' were constructed and mobilised in the public domain, in this case, the House of Representatives. It shows that members of the House have engaged with an extensive tradition of defining and excluding; a process by which state and public discourses have constructed largely unified, negative and othering narratives of 'the homosexual'. This constitutes an overarching narrative of queer experience which, until the mid-1990s, excluded queer subjects from its construction. At the same time, fictional narratives offer an adjacent body of knowledge and thought for queer men and women. This thesis posits literature's position as an important and productive space for queer resistance and critique. Such texts typically engage with and subvert 'dominant' or 'normative' understandings of sexuality and disturb efforts to apprehend precise or linear histories of 'gay liberation' and 'gay consciousness'. Drawing from the works of Frank Sargeson, James Courage, Bill Pearson, Noel Virtue, Stevan Eldred-Grigg, and Peter Wells, this thesis argues for a revaluing of fictional narratives as active texts from which historians can construct a matrix of cultural experience, while allowing for, and explaining, the determining role such narratives play in the discursively constructed understandings of gender and sexuality in New Zealand.

Abstract:
Abstract This paper reviews the Hansford Assembly Flex project recently conducted at RPI. Assembly Flex is a modular automation assembly system in the truest sense. It most cases it can be reconfigured (re-tooled) in under 20 minutes and go from building water pumps to car stereos. Much of this flexibility stems from its unique software control system developed by the authors and others.
