Abstract:
This article examines Muhammad Abduh's criticism of Gabriel Hanotaux's thoughts, as stated in his book Islam Bainal Ilmi Wal Madaniyah. The type of research used is literature, with a figure study approach. The results showed that Abduh disagreed with Hanotaux in 6 cases. First, regarding progress, only the European Christian Aryan ethnic group possessed it. According to Abduh, the advancement of the rights of all ethnicities and the attribution of Aryan ethnicity to Christianity is not appropriate. Second, Hanotaux wrongly considers Islam a fatalist religion and Christianity a religion that has free will in its destiny. Third, regarding the social reality of Muslims, Abduh has the same views as Hanotaux and is self-critical of the situation of Muslims. Fourth, on the theme of colonial politics, Abduh criticized Hanotaux, who argued that this was purely out of religious interests. Fifth, in the theme of secularization, Hanotaux mixes state political affairs with religion to completely separate them, while Abduh believes that the two can't be separated; all that can be done is to divide tasks and areas of authority between politics and religion.

Abstract:
The 1944–1945 Yearbook of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences in Amsterdam includes a commemorative article written byjohan Huizinga in honour of the French historian Gabriel Hanotaux, who was a foreign member of the Academy from 1913 to 1944. Hanotaux was born on November 19, 1853, and died on April 11, 1944, a few months after his ninetieth birthday. In his commemoration of Hanotaux, Huizinga briefly sketched the life, work and achievements of Hanotaux who was, at that time, a wellknown French historian and politician. Huizinga was very impressed, as becomes apparent from his words: ‘Truly, it is almost unbelievable what this representative of all that is noble and pure in the French has created.’ He concluded his commemoration with a brief consideration of what he called his ‘temporary personal relationship with Hanotaux’.

Abstract:
Gabriel Hanotaux (1853-1944) is a forgotten personality of the Third Republic: former Minister for Foreign Affairs (1894-1898), historian of Richelieu and literary scholar voted membership into the French Academy (1897), this statesman was mainly concerned with the future of France. Disappointed in the political sphere which he joined at the Quai d’Orsay for nearly twenty years (1879-1898) in which he was severely criticized by a seething public opinion, he left the government to assume only intermittent and official functions – official ambassador at the canonization of Joan of Arc in Rome (1920), delegate of France to the League of Nations (1920-1923) – and he decided to defend this France by following Richelieu’s teaching. With the help of his broad network, he founded the Comité France-Amérique (1909) with the aim of strengthening a friendship across the Atlantic that he considered decisive in the face of the growing tension in international relations, he created the local Comité de l’Aisne during the First World War to support the war effort at the back of the front. He used his pen to defend a permanent peace, he founded the Académie des Sciences coloniales (1923) with a college of scholars to participate in this "greater France" movement, and finally, he contributed to the influence of the country's letters, arts and sciences until the Second World War. Author of numerous books and articles, including L’Histoire de la Nation française, he was both an actor and an observer of this society, whose heads of state and government he was intimately acquainted with, from Gambetta to Marshal Petain, via J. Ferry, R. Poincare, A. Millerand and A. Lebrun

Abstract:
Abstract With one or two exceptions, serious historical studies devoted to the ministry of Cardinal Richelieu only began in the Third Republic, thanks especially to the Herculean efforts of Avenel in gathering together and publishing many of the cardinal’s more accessible papers. Though far from complete—the archives of the Quai d’Orsay were originally closed to Avenel-his editorial labours made it possible for the first scholarly biographies to be written. The most notable of these was the six-volume monument to Richelieu that began issuing from the pen of Gabriel Hanotaux in 1893, the year before he became France’s foreign minister. The verdict of French historians like Hanotaux at the turn of the twentieth century on Richelieu’s ministry was unequivocal. The cardinal was one of the truly great figures, not just in the history of France but in the history of Europe. At home, Richelieu laid the foundations for the French absolute monarchy by taming the great nobility, subduing the military might of the Huguenots, and centralizing the state bureaucracy under the all-seeing eye of the royal council and its intendants.

Abstract:
This chapter addresses Fawwaz’s intervention in the furious local responses to the infamous articles on ‘Islam’ by France’s former Foreign Minister Gabriel Hanotaux, published in a leading Paris periodical in the spring of 1900. Fawwaz’s response was one of many; for Fawwaz as for others in Egypt and the Ottoman Empire, the question of imperialism could not but shape the possibilities and limitations for activism on behalf of women. The justly celebrated response by leading Islamic-reformist thinker Muhammad ‘Abduh has obscured the many other responses that appeared. Fawwaz’s response asked: what could women do to contribute to an anti-imperialist activism that would ultimately rid the country of foreign interests inimical to its future prosperity?
