Abstract:
AbstractKagami-Ogata syndrome (KOS) (OMIM #608149) is a genetic imprinting disorder affecting chromosome 14 that results in a characteristic phenotype consisting of typical facial features, skeletal abnormalities including rib abnormalities described as “coat hanger ribs,” respiratory distress, abdominal wall defects, polyhydramnios, and developmental delay. First identified by Wang et al in 1991, over 80 cases of KOS have been reported in the literature. KOS, however, continues to remain a rare and potentially underdiagnosed disorder. In this report, we describe two unrelated male infants with differing initial presentations who were both found to have the characteristic “coat hanger” rib appearance on chest X-ray, raising suspicion for KOS. Molecular testing confirmed KOS in each case. In addition to these new cases, we reviewed the existing cases reported in literature. Presence of polyhydramnios, small thorax, curved ribs, and abdominal wall defects must alert the perinatologist toward the possibility of KOS to facilitate appropriate molecular testing. The overall prognosis of KOS remains poor. Early diagnosis allows for counseling by a multidisciplinary team and enables parents to make informed decisions regarding both pregnancy management and postnatal care.

Abstract:
Paternal uniparental disomy 14 (patUPD14) is a distinct, clinically recognizable syndrome. Using a clinical SNP microarray, we identified patUPD14 in a boy with a normal karyotype presenting cardiomyopathy and facial anomalies, a specific configuration of the thoracic ribs (‘coat hanger sign'), and hypospadias. Analyses of polymorphic microsatellites confirmed the diagnosis of patUPD14. We discuss the functions of the genes included in the rearrangement and their involvement in the pathogenesis of these disorders, especially hypospadias. ESR2 single nucleotide polymorphisms (rs944050; 2681-4A>G) have been associated with an increased risk of hypospadias in previous studies. The patient's ESR2 (rs944050) genotype is GG, whereas the parents both exhibit an AG genotype. This report sheds light on the genetic phenomenon in which the combination of a polymorphism and UPD can lead to new phenotypes, such as hypospadias.

Abstract:
To the authors' knowledge, this is the first report of the use of anterior orbitotomy via the supraorbital eyelid crease to repair a dural tear caused by an orbital roof fracture. When transorbital penetrating injuries occur in children, they are commonly caused by accidental falls onto pointed objects. The authors report on their experience with a 7-year-old girl who fell onto a blunt metal rod hanger that penetrated her left eyelid, traversed superior to the eye globe, and penetrated the orbital roof at a depth of 3–4 cm, lacerating the dura mater and entering the cerebrum. An anterior transpalpebral transorbital approach was used to perform the microsurgical anterior skull base and dural repair. The authors advocate the application of this approach to orbital roof fractures because it provides excellent access to the orbital roof, eliminates the need for more invasive craniotomy, results in a small and well-hidden scar in the eye crease, and overall offers a shorter recovery time with less psychological stress to the patient.

The work is to understanding the behaviour of structural components like beams and columns during loading is crucial for the development of efficient and safe structures. In this report, the reinforced concrete beam has been analyzed and modelled when subjected to two-point loads and single-point load conditions, using the Finite Element Analysis tool, popularly called ANSYS software. The analyzed and modelled beam has a dimension of 500mm × 100 mm × 100 mm with 2 numbers of 8mm diameter bars are main reinforced, and 2 numbers of 8 mm diameter are hanger bars. The behaviour of the analysed beam has been observed regarding the shear behavior, crack widths and displacement for various static loading. According to the analysis carriedout on the Reinforced Concrete beams using ANSYS, it is observed that results are more profound to reinforcement size, materials properties, load percentage increment, etc.

Abstract:
Vibration of process heater tubes in a fired heater can cause fretting-wear damage of the tubes at the locations of contact points with the supports. For the reboiler of a naphtha splitter in a naphtha hydrotreating unit, a scenario of fretting-wear damage was observed exactly at contact areas between the top return bends and the hanger supports, which likely indicated constant rubbing between them during vibration. A root-cause analysis of this tube vibration problem was carried out through a combined study of process simulation, Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and vibration analysis. Results from CFD simulations revealed dual phase flow inducing pressure fluctuations inside the radiant tube. The predicted pressure fluctuations were further analyzed using Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) to identify the dominant frequency of pressure fluctuations. Some of the resulting dominant frequencies were within 20% band of the estimated natural frequency of the tube, which could lead to resonance mode. This predicted resonant vibration matched with the locations of severe grooving, as reported in the heater inspection report. A scenario of mitigating this resonance mode has also been presented through decreasing feed flow rates to the radiant tube coils and installing additional support at the mid-height of the radiant tube coils.

Abstract:
This paper presents the development of a visual inspection methodology for engineered wood products that are commonly used in residential construction in the USA. Engineered wood products include wood composite structural elements such as I-joists, oriented strand board, and structural composite lumber products, and metal plate connected wood trusses. Due to the proprietary nature of wood composite engineered products, there are no uniform standards between different manufacturers for installation and use. If improper installation methods are used, engineered wood products may not be able to safely carry design loads. Improper use or modifications constitute prescriptive code violations. Construction errors that result from the unique installation requirements demonstrate the need for specific inspection methods to detect installation errors early in the construction process. The goal of this research is to develop an expert-validated visual inspection methodology, associated knowledge base, and software application for selected engineered wood products and hanger hardware for non-compliance at the pre-drywall stage of new residential construction. A modified Delphi method was used to solicit and refine inspection methods from subject matter experts. Based on these results, an inspection method and computer software application were developed. The method establishes a systematic expert-validated inspection procedure that identifies known high-risk areas for installation problems for engineered wood products. The software contains the instructions for implementing the inspection method, a reference library of authoritative installation guidelines and illustrations, the ability to document observed defects, and a vehicle to create a report. The experts validated the method and software application, and confirmed the usefulness for detecting construction errors.

Abstract:
As evidence for the hypothesis on the claim of reduced longevity for left-handers, Coren in 1989 reported data which suggested that left-handers were 1.89 times more likely to report injuries which required medical attention. This left-handed group included both left- and mixed-handed individuals. To clarify the results of his study, we repeated in part Coren's study but defined handedness so that groups of right-, mixed-, and left-handed individuals were considered. In contrast to Coren's data, we found that right- and left-handers did not differ significantly in the frequency with which they reported having experienced accidents with injury and that mixed-handers reported being significantly more likely to have had an injury-accident than either right- or left-handers. These data underscore the need to consider mixed-handedness as a separate group in studies of this type.

Abstract:
Severe damage or collapse of reinforced concrete dapped-end beams (RC-DEBs) may occur during the service life. The collapse of the Concorde overpass structure in Laval, Quebec, Canada, in 2006 revealed the causes of collapse, i.e., insufficient shear strength (no stirrups), misplacement of hanger reinforcement, etc. In addition, the inspection report of RC half-joint bridges in England until 2018 expressed that damages or failures of half-joint structures can be attributed to the poor condition of structures or non-compliant reinforcement detailing. These conditions exhibited how important it is to understand the proper detailing of dapped-end reinforcement. To date, some studies have performed investigations on the effect of inadequate dapped-end reinforcement on the structural behavior of DEBs. However, the results of the research to date were not yet complete enough to disclose the role of each group of dapped-end reinforcement in resisting the working load. Therefore, this study was carried out to investigate the main role of each group of dapped-end reinforcement separately on the structural performance of RC-DEBs. Eight large-scaled RC-DEBs (with sizes of 1800 mm length, 120 mm width and 250 mm height) were prepared, cast and cured. All DEB specimens were tested under the three-point loading up to failure. To localize the effect of shear failure, the shear span-depth ratio (av⁄d) of 1.43 was set. Test results exhibited that arrangement of a specific group of dapped-end reinforcement separately affects the structural performance of DEBs significantly. The diagonal reinforcement (DR) group was found to be more effective than the vertical hanger reinforcement (HR) group. The failure load capacity of the DR group (DEB-18) achieved 0.29 times that of the control beam (DEB-3). Meantime, the nib flexure reinforcement (NFR) group demonstrated the most important role in the structural performance of DEBs compared to other dapped-end reinforcement groups. The failure load capacity of the NFR group (DEB-39) reached 0.62 times that of the control beam, while rupture deflection of the NFR group also exhibited the highest value than other groups, i.e., 0.62 times that of the control beam. In addition, analysis results of rosette strain gages (RSGs) data indicated that regions near to re-entrant corner and its vicinity experienced the highest stress concentration factor (SCF) compared to other places of the beams. These regions were more susceptible to experiencing the first crack, progressive crack, damage or failure first than other regions of DEBs. The greater the value of SCF, the greater the probability of collapse occurring in the related structural elements, which is also followed by a lower failure load capacity. DEB-1 (without dapped-end reinforcement) has the highest SCF (205.68), and the lowest failure load capacity (12.58 kN), whilst DEB-3 (with the complete dapped-end reinforcement) has the lowest SCF (79.62), but the highest failure load capacity (105.26 kN). Obviously, DEB-3 can withstand the working load properly. Its adequate dapped-end reinforcement is able to accommodate and distribute the high stress flows in the dapped-end region properly, which causes the SCF value to decrease.

Abstract:
Introduction Few studies investigated nostril-advantage in chemosensory perception, particularly, in relation to handedness. The aim of the present article was therefore to assess whether trigeminal/olfactory perception is altered by handedness. Methods We tested 50 (all right-handed) and 43 (22 left-handed) participants in Studies 1 and 2, respectively. We used binary mixtures of cinnamaldehyde and eucalyptol, in different proportions presented as physical mixtures (the same exact mixture presented birhinally to each nostril) or as a dichorhinic mixtures (different mixtures presented to each nostril). Presenting dichorhinic mixtures allowed us to assess nostril dominance based on participants’ report on whether the mixture smelled more like cinnamon or eucalyptus. Participants also evaluated whether the stimuli were “painful,” “warm,” “cold,” and “intense” on visual scales. Results In Study 1, we find that in right handers, stimuli presented to the right nostril dominated over those presented to the left nostril. These stimuli were also rated as more “painful” and “intense.” In Study 2, we could not corroborate the findings in the right-handed individuals, and we found limited support for a nostril advantage left-handed individuals. Conclusion Although our data points toward a certain nostril advantage in chemosensory perception, the finding is not systematic, we discuss possible underlying factors.

Abstract:
Prior research has shown that right-handed adults perform better on a speed-tapping task with the right hand and right foot, while left-handers execute more rapidly with the left hand and right foot. Speculation is that environmental influence, most likely driving experience, may account for the right-foot bias. To examine this hypothesis further, 48 young right- and left-handed children were tested on a similar protocol. Analyses indicated no significant differences in foot performance within hand-preference groups. Since these findings do not complement reports for adults, factors such as experience or maturation might contribute to the difference. Were patterns similar, the effect of environmental influence would be assumed to be small. However, much more evidence is needed before an adequate explanation can be developed. The issue of possible environmental influence is discussed from various theoretical perspectives.

Abstract:
Since prehistoric times, left-handed individuals have been ubiquitous in human populations, exhibiting geographical frequency variations. Evolutionary explanations have been proposed for the persistence of the handedness polymorphism. Left-handedness could be favoured by negative frequency-dependent selection. Data have suggested that left-handedness, as the rare hand preference, could represent an important strategic advantage in fighting interactions. However, the fact that left-handedness occurs at a low frequency indicates that some evolutionary costs could be associated with left-handedness. Overall, the evolutionary dynamics of this polymorphism are not fully understood. Here, we review the abundant literature available regarding the possible mechanisms and consequences of left-handedness. We point out that hand preference is heritable, and report how hand preference is influenced by genetic, hormonal, developmental and cultural factors. We review the available information on potential fitness costs and benefits acting as selective forces on the proportion of left-handers. Thus, evolutionary perspectives on the persistence of this polymorphism in humans are gathered for the first time, highlighting the necessity for an assessment of fitness differences between right- and left-handers.

Abstract:
BackgroundThe notion that schizophrenia is characterised by increased non-right-handedness is a cornerstone of the theory that schizophrenia arises from, and is genetically linked to, abnormal brain lateralisation. Reviews and meta-analyses have reported higher rates of non-right-handers in patients with schizophrenia. However, this was suggested to be the result of a gender artefact or a hidden bias in self-report handedness questionnaires.AimsTo investigate using a meta-analytical approach whether the excess of non-right-handedness is seen in both females and males, and also when handedness is assessed behaviourally.MethodElectronic databases were searched for studies that reported (a) the rate of female and male non-right-handers in schizophrenia compared with controls and (b) the rate of non-right-handers in schizophrenia (regardless of gender) based on behavioural handedness assessment.ResultsThe odds ratios (ORs) for females (OR = 1.63; based on 621 patients, 3747 controls) and males (OR = 1.50; based on 1213 patients, 3800 controls) differed significantly from 1.0, indicating both female and male patients were more often non-right-handed than controls. Moreover, there was an excess of non-right-handedness in patients with schizophrenia when handedness was assessed behaviourally: OR = 1.84 (1255 patients, 6260 controls). Even when both gender and behavioural handedness assessment were controlled for simultaneously, the excess of non-right-handedness persisted.ConclusionsThe findings clearly demonstrate that the excess of non-right-handedness in schizophrenia does not result from a gender artefact or from biased handedness questionnaires. It is a true empirical effect and may indeed reflect a genetic link between schizophrenia and brain lateralisation.

A relationship between handedness and clinicodemographic profiles of people with multiple sclerosis was sought using data from the Multiple Sclerosis Partners Advancing Technology Health Solutions network of 10 multiple sclerosis centers in the USA and Europe. Handedness data were available for 8888 multiple sclerosis patients, of which 917 (10.3%) were left-handed. Clinicodemographic profiles of right versus left-handed multiple sclerosis patients were similar except for a slightly increased proportion of men who were left-handed, and slightly reduced performance on the manual dexterity test using the non-dominant hand in left-handed patients. We found no evidence to suggest a prognostic implication of handedness in multiple sclerosis.

Abstract:
Situs inversus totalis (SIT) is a rare congenital condition in which the abdominal and thoracic organs are on the opposite sides to their normal anatomic positions. Reports of laparoscopic surgery for colorectal cancer with SIT are very few. Due to the mirror-image transposition of organs and vascular abnormalities, laparoscopic surgery for patients with SIT is technically complicated. Therefore, it has been reported as easier for left-handed surgeons. This report presents that operative procedures can be conducted as usual by changing the positions of the operator and assistants, even if the operator is right-handed. A 71-year-old woman visited our hospital with a 2-month history of hematochezia. Colonoscopy revealed an ulcerative tumor in the sigmoid colon and biopsy confirmed well-differentiated adenocarcinoma. Laparoscopic sigmoidectomy radical lymphadenectomy was performed. The operating time was 189 minutes and blood loss was 13 mL. The patient was discharged on postoperative day 7, without any complications. We report that complicated surgical procedures for patients with SIT can be simplified by changing viewpoints. Due to the altered anatomy in SIT, the positions of the operator and assistants are very important. Location of the pelvis is almost the same as in orthotopic patients, by moving the operator from the left side to the right side of the patient. Changing the position of the operator to the right side seems to be effective for patients with SIT during pelvic procedures.

Abstract:
Many studies report that left-handers have a shorter longevity than right-handers, and the present study may provide a possible explanation for that finding. In a Cardiac Rehabilitation Unit for the elderly with a mean age of 75.2 years the prevalence of left-handers was 16.7%. This latter value was significantly different (p = 0.0028) from the 6.7% in controls of similar age. These data suggest that heart disease may be one reason for a reduced longevity among lefthanders. Left-handers use the right hemisphere for movement, and unilateral activation of that hemisphere in the form of EEG desynchronization and deactivation in the form of EEG slow waves are both related to cardiac abnormalities.

Abstract:
Laparoscopic cholecystectomy is a broadly used technique for gallbladder treatment. However, situs inversus, a rare anomaly, is reportedly difficult to treat by conventional laparoscopic cholecystectomy. A 36-year-old woman with chronic cholecystitis and multiple gallstones was found to have dextrocardia on a chest X-ray. Magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated situs inversus, cholecystitis, and cholelithiasis. We successfully performed laparoscopic cholecystectomy using our modified technique, which mainly involved a left-handed operation and adjustment of the port positions. This case will be very instructive for right-handed surgeons in the management of cholelithiasis by laparoscopic cholecystectomy in patients with situs inversus.

Abstract:
The article deals with the activities of the official of the Maritime Ministry B. P. Mansurov, sent in 1856 by Grand Duke Konstantin Nikolayevich to the Turkish East in order to compile a guide for pilgrims and collect information about their situation in Palestine. The relevance of the study is due to the fact that Mansurov's activities marked the beginning of the construction of infrastructure for Russian pilgrims, called ‘Russian Palestine’. The material for the study are three reports by Mansurov. It is shown that the first report was dictated by the rivalry between the Grand Duke Konstantin Nikolayevich and the head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs A. M. Gorchakov. Attention is paid to the second version of the report, handed over to the emperor and ministers, in which criticism of the Foreign Ministry was smoothed over. Particular attention is paid to the fact that, under the influence of Gorchakov, Mansurov tried to remove the most acute political problems from the third version of the report, which was already sent to senior officials. It is proved that Mansurov’s report received a wide response and became the subject of consideration by the Committee of Ministers. The issue of the further fate of Mansurov’s report, published in the form of a book entitled “Orthodox worshipers in Palestine”, which was supposed to draw attention to the problem of pilgrims and raise funds to help them, is considered.

Abstract:
The present report discusses the case of a 73-year-old right-handed man who exhibited signs of aphasia caused by cerebral infarction in the left temporoparietal region. Neuropsychological evaluation revealed that he had difficulty in comprehending words related to indoor objects, body parts, and family relationships, compared to his vocabulary comprehension in other semantic categories. Although several reports have described cases in whom category-specific impairments in word comprehension are observed, few have documented cases in whom these impairments are accompanied by impairments in the comprehension of words indicating family relationships. Words in each of these three categories derive their meanings and notation from spatial relationships. Therefore, it is likely that the patient’s impairments were caused by difficulty in comprehending spatial relationships due to left parietal lobe damage.

Abstract:
We present a unique case of ipsilateral stroke in a 55-year-old right-handed hypertensive man with proven uncrossed pyramidal tract demonstrated by tractography. Diffusion-weighted imaging disclosed small acute ischemic infarcts in the right corona radiata with MR angiography showing narrowing of the right internal carotid artery. Significant carotid stenosis of right internal carotid artery (ICA) was detected on digital subtraction angiography as the underlying cause and subsequently treated with percutananeous transluminal angioplasty and stenting with good outcome. The presence of uncrossed pyramidal tract was confirmed by diffusion tensor imaging tractography. To our knowledge there are few reports of ipsilateral stroke with proven uncrossed pyramidal tracts described in the literature. This is the first documented report of ipsilateral stroke with uncrossed fibre tracts due to underlying critical stenosis of the ICA treated successfully with a good recovery.

Abstract:
Media portrayals of animal cruelty can shape public understanding and perception of animal welfare law. Given that animal welfare law in Australia is guided partially by ‘community expectations’, the media might indirectly be influencing recent reform efforts to amend maximum penalties in Australia, through guiding and shaping public opinion. This paper reports on Australian news articles which refer to penalties for animal cruelty published between 1 June 2019 and 1 December 2019. Using the electronic database Newsbank, a total of 71 news articles were included for thematic analysis. Three contrasting themes were identified: (1) laws are not good enough; (2) laws are improving; and (3) reforms are unnecessary. We propose a penalty reform cycle to represent the relationship between themes one and two, and ‘community expectations’. The cycle is as follows: media reports on recent amendments imply that ‘laws are improving’ (theme two). Due to a range of inherent factors in the criminal justice system, harsher sentences are not handed down by the courts, resulting in media report of ‘lenient sentencing’ (theme one). Hence, the public become displeased with the penal system, forming the ‘community expectations’, which then fuel future reform efforts. Thus, the cycle continues.

Abstract:
Case report: A right-handed man in his 60s sustained a subcutaneous rupture of the flexor tendon of the left small finger while playing golf. At one month after the injury, a bridge tendon graft was performed using the ipsilateral palmaris longus tendon. A dorsal extension block splint was fabricated the day after surgery, and early mobilization programs were initiated. Referring to previous reports, active finger flexion and extension exercises were performed under wearing the splint until 4-6 postoperative weeks, and full power grip was not allowed until 12 postoperative weeks. However, at 16 postoperative weeks, the moment he swung a golf club, the tendon rerupture occurred. Discussion: No studies have been reported on rerupture after 12 postoperative weeks. The author considered three factors of tendon rerupture. Firstly, it is weakening of the tendon due to steroid injection. Secondly, it is delayed tendon healing due to blood flow disturbance caused by synovial hyperplasia. Thirdly, it is the stress on the small finger flexor tendon of swinging a golf club. Conclusion: Therapists need to plan rehabilitation programs based on analysis of not only past reports but the patients’ background and lifestyle.

Abstract:
Background: Weak or inconsistent hand preference has been postulated to be a risk factor for developmental language delay. Following on from our Registered Stage 1 report this study assessed the extent to which variations in language skills are associated with the strength of hand preference. Methods: Data are drawn from a large sample (N = 569) of 6- to 7-year-old children unselected for ability, assessed at two time points, 6 months apart. Hand preference was assessed using the Quantitative Hand Preference (QHP) task and five uni-manual motor tasks. Language skills (expressive and receptive vocabulary, receptive grammar, and morphological awareness) were assessed with standardized measures. Results: We found QHP scores did not distinguish children with weaker language skills from those with stronger language skills and the correlation between QHP scores and language ability was negligible in this study. Hand preference on the QHP task was significantly stronger among right-handed than left-handed children and left-handed children were typically inconsistent in the hand used across different tasks. Conclusions: The findings presented here fail to provide any support for the theory that weak cerebral lateralisation (as assessed here by the QHP task) places children at risk of language difficulties. Abstract:
Annotation. Respiratory diseases are relevant in pediatric practice, which is associated with its widespread and frequent complications, especially in young children. The aim of the study was to assess the diagnostic value of clinical symptoms, laboratory and ultra-sonographic parameters in pneumonia in children of the first 3 years of life. A retrospective study of medical records of 218 children who were hospitalized in the department for young children diagnosed with pneumonia for the period from 2016 to 2018. The average age of children was 11.67±9.97 months and it was within the range from 1 month to 3 years. The ration of boys and girls was practically identical (51.8% and 48.2% accordingly). The first group included children aged under one year (the average age is 4.57±0.84 months; n=88). The second group included children aged from 1 to 3 years (the average age is 18.2±4.25 months; n=130). To characterize the information content of clinical and laboratory symptoms the study has used objective parameters defined as the operational characteristics of tests. The most important operational characteristics of diagnostic methods included: sensitivity (Se, sensitivity) and specificity (Sp, specificity). To check the statistical hypothesis on differences of absolute and relative frequencies, fractions, and ratios in two independent samples, the criteria of хі-square (χ2) was used. While detailing an anamnesis, the disease was more often related to untimely treatment and outpatient care. Various data were obtained on the absolute and relative risk, as well as the sensitivity and specificity of the localization of pneumonia depending on age. Therefore, the incidence of bilateral pneumonia was considered an indicator of risk. On admission to hospital, the body temperature of patients was 38.2±0.66°С. Most of the complaints were on the unproductive or productive cough. Besides, in some cases, shortness of breath and runny nose were mentioned. Thus, in young children with pneumonia, a diagnostically significant clinical symptom is a bilateral lung impression (82.6%), compared with right-handed (15.1%) and left-handed (2.3%), which is significantly more common in children under 1-th year of life compared with patients 1–3 years; laboratory features are probably higher levels of liver-specific enzymes – ALT and AST in children under 1 year; ultrasonographic indicators associated with the presence of pneumonia in young children include increased liver size, gallbladder deformity, the presence of sediment in the gallbladder, dyskinesia of the biliary tract, thickening of the gallbladder wall; children under 1 year of age have a risk of liver enlargement and biliary dyskinesia.

Coren and Halpern's response to Fudin, Renninger, Lembessis, and Hirshon's 1993 report of a nonsignificant difference in longevity between left-handed and right-handed baseball players contained errors of fact, theory, and omission. Especially disturbing is that they ignored the fact that our negative findings were found not only with parametric tests but with the same nonparametric tests that they had used. We defend our use of parametric tests given the particular data we analyzed, and we comment on the databases that we and Halpern and Coren considered and the results of studies of handedness and longevity.
