Abstract:
‘Economics education’ as a field within economics focuses on “the current state of, the economics curriculum, materials and pedagogical techniques used to teach economics at all educational levels” (Becker, 2001). Unfortunately, Islamic economics education (IEE) is a highly neglected field in contemporary Islamic economics. As such, this edited book is an important addition to this much needed area.

Abstract:
Dermatoglyphics is the scientific study of the epidermal ridge configuration of hands and feet. Digital dermatoglyphics are unique and specific evidence that greatly contribute to personal identification in forensic science. Hand dominance is an uneven distribution of fine motor skills between the left and right hands. The objective of the study is to observe gender variation in fingerprinting pattern of thumb and index fingers and also to determine the relationship between handedness and digital dermatoglyphics. The study was conducted at Saveetha Medical College and Hospital. Ethical clearance for this study was obtained from the Ethical Clearance Committee of the institute. This cross-sectional study was conducted on a sample size of 500 students, of 18-25 years of age, pursuing their education in the constituent courses of Saveetha Medical College. Handedness was assessed using the Edinburgh Handedness Inventory. The fingerprints were obtained by a 'Lipstick' method. The prints were studied using a magnifying lens. The various patterns of fingerprints were observed, categorized and compared according to standard guidelines. A total of 500 students were studied. There were 228 right-handed males, 18 left-handed males, 233 right-handed females and 21 left-handed females. In right-handed males, the thumb showed a predominance of loop pattern in (57.9 %) study participants and in right-handed females loop pattern was observed in thumb was 61.1%. In the right-handed female thumb, loops were predominant patterns in 70.8. Arch pattern is distinctively absent for both right and left-handed thumb in both males and females. 19.3 % of female right-hander had arch patterns predominantly in their index finger. Widespread interest is developing in the field of medicine and forensic science with regard to epidermal ridges. Our present study was able to observe gender variations and variations in the dermatoglyphic pattern in the right and left-hander for the first two digits.

"Fighting Left Handers Promotes Different Visual Perceptual Strategies than Right Handers: The Study of Eye Movements of Foil Fencers in Attack and Defence." Abstract:
Left handers have long held the edge over right handers in one-on-one interactive combat sports. Particularly in fencing, top rankings show a relatively strong overrepresentation of left handers over right handers. Whether this can be attributed to perceptual strategies used by fencers in their bouts remains to be established. This study aims to verify whether right-handed fencers assess their opponents’ behaviour based on different perceptual strategies when fencing a left vs. right hander. Twelve top-level (i.e., Olympic fencers, Junior World Team Fencing Champions, and top Polish senior foil fencers) right-handed female foil fencers (aged 16–30 years) took part in the study. They performed a total of 40 actions: 10 repetitions of offensive actions (attack) and 10 repetitions of defensive actions (defence), each type of action performed under 2 conditions (right- vs. left-handed opponent). While the participants were fencing, their eye movements were being recorded with a remote eye-tracker (SMI ETG 2.0). Both in their offensive and defensive actions, the fencers produced more fixations to the armed hand and spent more time observing the armed hand in duels with a left-handed (vs. right-handed) opponent. In defence, it was also the guard that attracted more fixations and gained a longer observation time in bouts with a left hander. In duels with a right-handed opponent, a higher number of fixations in attack and in defence, and longer observation times in defence were found for the upper torso. The results may point to different perceptual strategies employed in bouts with left- vs. right-handed individuals. The findings from this study may help to promote the implementation of specialized perceptual training programmes in foil fencing.

Abstract:
Human has a preference to use their hands for various manual activities. Left-handed preference is people who tend to use their left hand to perform various manual activities, while right-handed people tend to use right-handed. Any researches show that the left-handed preference for more creativity was influenced by the dominant use of the right brain and bigger corpus callosum. The research aims to determine the percentage of left-handed preference and their creativity in Universitas Papua, Manokwari Papua Barat. The method used in this research is the descriptive method. Data collection used a questionnaire to evaluate individual hand preference using Handedness Questionnaire and to determine individual creativity using Adjective Check List. The percentage of left-handed people in UNIPA were 9.3% or lower than right-handed and higher than ambidextrous. Our study supports the statement about selection in handedness in the traditional society which showed a higher percentage of left-hander as advantages related to using hand intensively. The percentage of left-handed males and females was almost equal and strongly left-handed was higher in females. The percentage of creative people was higher in left-handed, especially in males

Abstract:

Abstract:
Left-handers have been persecuted by right-handers for millennia. This right bias is evident cross-culturally, linguistically (right is literally and figuratively ‘right’, with lefties being described as ‘gauche’, ‘sinister’ and ‘cack-handed’), and environmentally (e.g., equipment design, including power tools, ticket machines, and lecture-room desks). Despite this, the proportion of left-handers has remained constant at approximately 10% of the hominid population, implying that though there are costs associated with left-handedness (if there were not, the proportions of left- and right-handers would be 50:50), left handers must also enjoy fitness advantages that maintain the genes for left-handedness in the population. This paper reviews the costs and benefits of being left-handed, exploring research examining the effects of handedness on brain structure, cognitive function, and human behaviour. The research confirms a variety of left-hander advantages, including some cognitive superiorities, higher wages, and greater sporting and fighting prowess. On the other hand, left-handedness is also associated with significant fitness costs, including an increased risk of accidents, higher substance abuse susceptibility, and earlier death, in comparison with right-handers. In sum, left-handedness confers both costs and benefits, with the latter outweighing the former, maintaining the genes for left-handedness in the population.

Abstract:
AbstractThe laterality effects in 10 symmetrical EEG derivations in twins (20 MZ and 20 DZ pairs with a mean age of 20.5 years) were examined. The quantitative and qualitative analyses gave the following results: (1) cotwins in the MZ and DZ pairs differed particularly in the intensity of asymmetry for EEG parameters — one was more asymmetrical than the other; (2) among the MZ twins there were no “mirror” pairs (opposite asymmetry of the EEG), even where opposite-handedness existed. For example, a right-handed twin had an asymmetrical EEG, while the other, a left-hander, had a symmetrical one; (3) the most asymmetrical EEG was in the temporal derivations showing a more active left hemisphere; and, (4) there was no evidence of genetic influence in the intensity of EEG asymmetry.

Abstract:
Wearable sensor systems with transmitting capabilities are currently employed for the biometric screening of exercise activities and other performance data. Such technology is generally wireless and enables the non-invasive monitoring of signals to track and trace user behaviors in real time. Examples include signals relative to hand and finger movements or force control reflected by individual grip force data. As will be shown here, these signals directly translate into task, skill, and hand-specific (dominant versus non-dominant hand) grip force profiles for different measurement loci in the fingers and palm of the hand. The present study draws from thousands of such sensor data recorded from multiple spatial locations. The individual grip force profiles of a highly proficient left-hander (expert), a right-handed dominant-hand-trained user, and a right-handed novice performing an image-guided, robot-assisted precision task with the dominant or the non-dominant hand are analyzed. The step-by-step statistical approach follows Tukey’s “detective work” principle, guided by explicit functional assumptions relating to somatosensory receptive field organization in the human brain. Correlation analyses (Person’s product moment) reveal skill-specific differences in co-variation patterns in the individual grip force profiles. These can be functionally mapped to from-global-to-local coding principles in the brain networks that govern grip force control and its optimization with a specific task expertise. Implications for the real-time monitoring of grip forces and performance training in complex task-user systems are brought forward.
