In this thesis I present my work in developing a wearable gesture interface for mobile devices with limited sensing capabilites. The proposed method utilizes a novel form of color invariant processing to augment traditional convolutional neural networks for gesture recognition. This techniques allows the system to perform color invariant recognition avoiding traditional issues with hand segmentation. Using this method several demo applications were prototyped on a mobile phone platform to test its real-time efficacy. Through a preliminary user study we confirmed that this method allows static gesture recognition in a wide variety of mobile scenarios.

Wung, Jason. "A system approach to multi-channel acoustic echo cancellation and residual echo suppression for robust hands-free teleconferencing." Diss., Georgia Institute of Technology, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/1853/53384.

Full text
Abstract:
The objective of the research is to achieve a systematic combination of acoustic echo reduction components that together achieve a robust performance of the MCAEC system as a whole. Conventional approaches to the acoustic echo reduction system typically assume that individual components would perform ideally. For example, the adaptive algorithm for AEC is often developed in the absence of strong near-end signal, the algorithm for RES is often an added module that is developed as a separate noise reduction component, and the decorrelation procedure for MCAEC is yet another add-on module that simply introduces some form of distortion to the reference signal. The main challenge is in designing a consistent criterion across all modules that can be jointly optimized to form a more consistent framework for acoustic echo reduction. The decorrelation procedure can potentially benefit from the system approach as well if it is designed by taking the near-end listener into account. The MCAEC system should be optimized not only for the echo cancellation and suppression performance, but also for the reference signal quality after the added distortion from the decorrelation procedure. Finally, a tuning strategy is presented to jointly optimize the parameters across all modules using object criteria.

Bellini, Federico. "Il sistema Trauma Tracker - individuazione e analisi di parametri vitali acquisiti da monitor multiparametrico." Bachelor's thesis, Alma Mater Studiorum - Università di Bologna, 2016. http://amslaurea.unibo.it/11898/.

Abstract:

Ojerinde, Oluwaseun A. "Interaction of antenna systems with human body." Thesis, Loughborough University, 2014. https://dspace.lboro.ac.uk/2134/16320.

Full text
Abstract:
The research investigates the influence on the human body on a communication system. To understand this, the effect of hands free kit (HFK) on energy absorption in the body was investigated when operating a smart phone at 2G. Findings on the research are given in the thesis report. Also, the influence of the way in which a phone is held on a phone s received power was investigated. The result was compared to that obtained using a hand phantom acquired from SPEAG. This was to check if the hand phantom best represents the human hand when using it in experiments. The setup for the experiment was in an anechoic chamber at Loughborough University. The mobile phone transmitted in the 2G system. In further experiments carried out on the body, two antennas were attached to the body in six different orientations to receive power from a source creating a Single Input Multiple Output (SIMO) system. The antennas used were monopoles mounted on a circular ground plane. These antennas were designed and constructed with the influence of the body taken into consideration. The use of diversity techniques to improve transmission to an on-body system is investigated with the antennas on the body. For each alignment, the transmission to the on-body was compared with the transmission to the corresponding off-body (free space). Experiments for this work were carried out in three environments.

Abstract:
Thesis (MTech (Information Technology))--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2016.
Unlike the developed nations, the health sector within the developing countries is faced with the triple challenges of human, financial and technological scarcity of resources. This insufficiency of resources results into amongst other intrapartum mishaps. To ameliorate some of these conditions, the World Health Organization (1994) promoted the use of the pathogram as an informative and data capturing tool that could help reduce intrapartum mishaps. The usage of the partogram within the intrapartum environment also introduced a dilemma as birth attendants spent quite a good amount of time using their eyes and hands (in pen and paper) capturing medical data onto the partogram instead of investing these resources onto the expectant mother and or fetus. This study adopted Design Science Research as a suitable research approach, strengthened by a pragmatic philosophical standpoint. This study involved the following methods; • A review of literature in the intrapartum environment, along with topics from relevant reference disciplines including speech recognition • A series of semi-structured contextual interviews with birth attendants, student nurses and senior midwives • A design science research study using the knowledge from the reference disciplines to design a hands-free voice driven epartogram • A simulation of the capturing of intrapartum data to evaluate and refine the prototype (epartogram) by applying anonymized intrapartum data driven by natural speech • An evaluation of the artifact (epartogram) based on a number of published guidelines recommended by scholars to demonstrate its potential utility as well as to establish if the solution is generic to the contextual environment. Although the introduction of ICT into the problem domain abetted the process of data capturing (specifically the referral process), the fundamental aspect of using the prototype to free the hands and eyes of the birth attendants proved challenging due to issues with the recognition of natural speech by speech recognition systems and background noise. Monitoring of MOU and the referral process from a lower MOU to a higher one could benefit a great deal from this study as the prototype thrived well in that regard. Natural speech recognition by machines in an uncontrolled environment is still at its infancy (some of the most powerful engines can not differentiate between background noise and direct instruction). Not withsatnding the challenges posed by the infancy of speech recognition, the artifact showed potential as a manual epartogram providing spatial access to multiple participating MOU via the cloud.

Microsoft released the Kinect in 2010. It can capture the user’s depth information and use the body to replace the traditional remote control machine, so every player can feel unprecedented entertainment experience. Kinect is reasonable and powerful, so it is attractive to a lot of developers in industry or researchers to develop innovated applications. The Kinect sensor has the limitation in the detection angle and range. If user will want to control many appliances, every appliance must prepare its dedicated device. According to this research, it only needs one Kinect that can control many appliances. Besides, this research uses an Arduino as IR LED controller to send remote control signals to operate machine. So user can use his hands to replace the remote control at home. Therefore, Kinect and Arduino can let our life be simple. When a user enters the sensing area, our system can detect the human skeleton by Microsoft Kinect SDK. Our system can also calculate the 3D transform to recover user''s pose. If the user raises his hand to point at an appliance, he can specify that device to power on/off and use his gestures to control it. Four gestures are also defined for the most important control signals such as forward, backward, up and down. Our system can also extend to eight gestures for extra commands including escape command. The control system, without traditional remote controller on hand, can make the appliances control easier in digital home.

For a vehicular hands-free communication system, the sound quality of communication is usually degraded by background noise such as engine noise and aerodynamic noise which are known to be detrimental to system performance. In this report, a novel adaptive filtering algorithm and an integrated system for acoustic echo and noise cancellation are presented. The proposed system includes adaptive noise cancellation, line enhancer, and echo cancellation which are based on a novel variable step-size affine-projection algorithm (VSS APA). The proposed VSS APA filtering algorithm is a combination of a variable step-size least-mean-square (VSS LMS) and an affine-projection algorithm (APA). The input signal in the APA is structured as a matrix, which is more complete than the vector structure in other algorithms. As a result, the estimation of the weight vector has orthogonality, thus allowing quick and accurate error corrections. However, the step-size of the APA is invariable. The choice of the step-size affects the overall performance of the algorithm. The variable step-size of the proposed VSS APA can adjust itself automatically to reach an optimum step-size according to the operations of the system at different times. To understand and verify the effectiveness of the proposed system, a performance evaluation and comparison were conducted to compare the proposed algorithm and various traditional adaptive filtering algorithms in this application. The results demonstrated that the VSS APA has an effective performance and convergence in sound quality improvement of hands-free communication systems.

Hands-free communication systems usually suffer from echo and environment noise. They exacerbate the communication quality. In this thesis, we present a unified approach of echo cancellation and noise control systems which are categorized into two classes. A new parallel structure is also proposed. We analyze and compare the residual error of both parallel and cascade structures. The theoretical analysis and the computer simulations show that the parallel structure has larger convergent ERLE than the cascade structure. We propose the implementation of impulse response measurements and suggest the subbanding parallel structure of echo and noise cancellation in a car chamber. This accelerates convergence rate and reduces the computation complexities.

Hands-free communication systems find several applications such as hands-free telephone set, tele-video conferencing systems, distance learning and medicine systems. The related problems have been researched in recent years hoping to find a solution not only effective but also not so expensive. The purpose of this thesis is to study the major problems in such systems. We present a background introduction first. Then we discuss other topics including system modeling, adaptive algorithms, stereophonic acoustic echo cancellation, double talk detection, twin-filter structure, combined acoustic noise and echo cancellation, performance evaluation of acoustic echo controllers. Finally we collect several domestic studies. It is our goal that the thesis may become a handbook of studying in hands-free communication systems and will be helpful to the development of a good solution.
