Abstract:
Telephone handset design has evolved for decades along with advancements in technology and manufacturing methods. Today, a handset could be reduced to a slim rod incorporating a miniaturized earpiece and microphone. However, most handsets look like the venerable K-type handset, such as those found today on many household and business telephones. Should future handsets continue to follow suit, or are there significant opportunities for improvement? Initially, we conducted five focus groups to answer this question. To begin each session, we photographed consumers holding handsets to assess gripping styles. Then, consumers rank ordered six conventionally designed handsets and six progressively designed handsets according to several ergonomic and emotional attributes. They also critiqued the handset designs according to personal preference and built clay models of their ideal handset. Based on this input, our team of human factors and industrial design specialists designed 6 new concepts, then obtained quantitative and qualitative feedback by conducting thirty focus groups in three metropolitan areas. This follow-on research, that included free association, sample handset assessment and, paired comparison and ranking exercises, identified significant opportunities to improve handset comfort, appearance, and emotional appeal. A Kruskall-Wallace H-test showed few significant differences in consumer preferences among 18 sample handsets. Our results indicate that users prefer a handset that can be shouldered, looks modern, feels good in the hand, and conforms to the face. We found that users are receptive to design innovation, but only if there is an ergonomic payoff. We include a discussion of detailed design recommendations in the last two sections.

Abstract:
INTRODUCTION Patients undergoing colorectal surgical resections have a high incidence of surgical site infection (SSI). Many patient-specific risk factors have been recognised in association with SSI in such patients, but environmental contamination is increasingly recognised as a contributor to hospital-acquired infection (HAI). This study set out to describe the bacterial contamination of the patient environment, using hospital bed-control handsets, as they are frequently handled by both staff and patients and represent a marker of environmental contamination. PATIENTS AND METHODS On two unannounced sampling events, 1 week apart, 140 bacteriological assessments were made of 70 hospital bed control handsets within a specialist colorectal surgical unit. RESULTS Of the handsets examined, 67 (95.7%) demonstrated at least one bacterial species (52.9% grew 1, 30% grew 2 and 12.9% grew 3 or more bacterial species). Of these, 29 (41.4%) bed-control handsets grew bacteria known to cause nosocomial infection, including 22 (31.4%) handsets which grew Enterococcus spp., 9 (12.9%) which grew MRSA, 2 (2.9%) which grew MSSA, 2 (2.9%) which grew coliforms, and 1 (1.4%) handset which grew anaerobes. At 1-week follow-up, 31 bed-control handsets showed evidence of contamination by the same bacterial species. CONCLUSIONS This study revealed high levels of bacteria known to cause HAI, contaminating hospital bed-control handsets in a surgical setting. Further study is now required to confirm whether hospital environmental contamination is causally involved in SSI.

Abstract:
The aim of this paper is to analyze the determining factors for the pricing of handsets sold with service plans, using the hedonic price method. This was undertaken by building a database comprising 48 handset models, under nine different service plans, over a period of 53 weeks in 2008, and resulted in 27 different attributes and a total number of nearly 300,000 data registers. The results suggest that the value of monthly subscriptions and calling minutes are important to explain the prices of handsets. Furthermore, both the physical volume and number of megapixels of a camera had an effect on the prices. The bigger the handset, the cheaper it becomes, and the more megapixels a camera phone has, the more expensive it becomes. Additionally, it was found that in 2008 Brazilian phone companies were subsidizing enabled data connection handsets.

Abstract:
Recently considerable attention has been paid to hand tool design which has been caused by a near epidemic level of cases of carpal tunnel syndrome, tendonitis, tenosynovitis, and de Quervain's disease. Workers who use knives in meat packing are particularly susceptible to these occupational diseases. Five brands of meat packing knives with plastic handles were tested using a battery of 11 tests. These tests evaluated force capabilities using each of the knives. In addition, a standard cylindrical handle was tested as a control. The results indicated that the different handles performed differently depending upon the cutting orientation. This indicates that one handle cannot be chosen for all meat packing jobs. One handle, however, when evaluated using the ranks on all 11 tests is shown to be superior to the others tested.

Abstract:
The power density of portable electronic devices continues to increase because packaging advances reduce their size even as features are added and enhanced. Designing thermal management systems to accommodate steady-state conditions as opposed to fixed duty cycles can substantially increase cost, size, and weight. The feasibility of transient thermal management of handsets using phase change materials (PCMs) was experimentally investigated using an ABS handset mock-up. At selected intervals of time, the nonuniform case temperature of the handset was measured using an infrared (IR) camera, while thermocouples measured the temperatures of the PCM and simulated power amplifier (heater). Transient and steady-state heat transfer rates by natural convective and radiation from the handset to the environment were numerically computed from the temperature data in the thermal images. The effects of PCM material, power supplied to the handset, and handset orientation on the time required for the handset case to reach a given (maximum) temperature and “recovery” time were examined.

Abstract:
This paper presents a novel cellular handset design with a bottom-mounted short loaded-whip antenna. This new handset design is modeled and simulated using a finite difference time-domain (FDTD)-based platformSEMCAD. The proposed handset is based on a current commercially available bar-phone type with a curvature shape, keypad positioned above the screen, and top-mounted antenna. The specific absorption rates (SARs) are determined computationally in the specific anthropomorphic mannequin (SAM) and anatomically correct model of a human head when exposed to the EM-field radiation of the proposed cellular handset and the handset with top-mounted antenna. The two cellular handsets are simulated to operate at both GSM standards, 900 MHz as well as 1800 MHz, having different antenna dimensions and intput power of 0.6 W and 0.125 W, respectively. The proposed human hand holding the two handset models is a semirealistic hand model consists of three tissues: skin, muscle, and bone. The simulations are conducted with handset positions based on the IEEE standard 1528-2003. The results show that the proposed handset has a significant improvement of antenna efficiency when it is hand-held close to head, as compared with the handset of top-mounted antenna. Also, the results show that a significant reduction of the induced SAR in the human head-tissues can be achieved with the proposed handset.

Abstract:
This paper is intended to investigate intensely the impact of multipossible hand-hold positions on the electromagnetic (EM) interaction of handset antennas and a human by using a finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method. Candy-bar handsets with different external and internal antenna positions operating in the GSM900, GSM1800/DCS, and UMTS/IMT-2000 bands are hereby simulated with configuration of the most parts in order to achieve the commercially available handset model design. Homogeneous and heterogeneous phantoms both are used to simulate the human head, whereas, a semirealistic model with three different tissues is designed to simulate a human hand holding a set. Both of the antenna performance including the total isotropic sensitivity (TIS) and the specific absorption rate (SAR) in tissues are examined for the different suggested applicable cases, where various positions of antenna, handset and hand are considered in simulations. This simulation study determines that both of the antenna performance and the SAR in tissues significantly alter owing to the positioning of the handset against user's head at different hand levels; where a maximum alteration is observed due to the exposure of handset with internal antenna, as compared with the handset having external antenna.

In this thesis cellular handset and mobile terminal forward link sensitivity improvements due to dual-antenna systems with smart-antenna combining algorithms were determined. The performance of a mobile handset with a top-mounted monopole and back-mounted internal monopole was determined in the field. Handset field tests were conducted both for the handset attached to a phantom-head model and held by a human operator so that the effect of hand blockage and coupling were measured. The measurements were made on the IS-95 (CDMA) SPRINT PCS system in various parts of San Diego. Logged data was analyzed for single antenna performance, selection diversity combining, maximum ratio combining, and optimum combining.

Abstract:
The purpose of this project was the study of electrically small material coated antennas. In particular the use of a hybrid dielectric-ferrite material was examined, compared to dielectric alone, and ways it can improve antenna performance. The benefits resulting from the inclusion of ferrite were examined using both analytical and experimental methods. Initially a spherical analytical mathematical model was developed, to examine antenna efficiency, bandwidth and Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) in terms of different mixtures of relative permittivity εr and permeability μr. The theoretical model was then validated through a numerical transmission line matrix (TLM) simulation tool, applied to spherical and rectangular resonator geometries. It was observed that a material with equal values of relative permittivity and permeability in combination with specific positioning of the antenna in relation to the head, can give rise to the definitive small-size, high-efficiency, high-bandwidth, low-SAR antenna.

Abstract:
Today’s house prices are steady going up, and one square meter in inner Stockholm city is very expensive. The meaning, compact living has existed a long time but mostly aimed at bedrooms and kitchens. The bathrooms in old small apartments, mainly in Stockholm, are often very small. It hasn’t been that much progress in making the bathrooms look roomy, until now. The goal with this project was to develop a fold-up sink, mainly intended for people with small apartments. To save space in the bathroom, the sink could easily be able to fold up against the wall so that it could hang on the wall next to the toilet or behind it. The main focus has been on developing a product that isn’t a compromise compared to a regular sink and also making it easy to use. The product’s initial idea was developed at 2008, but then it was mainly an idea and a concept. The technical solutions to make the product work weren’t started then. In the beginning of the product development process a variation of product concepts were developed to work out the technical problems. The different solutions were compared, before the best one was picked. To be able to put the sink in the same area as the toilet, a new kind off drain was constructed. The outlet consists of a grip that attaches to the toilet ring, and to a tube. In that way the sink can be used in every toilet without needing to connect new drains. A lot of effort has been put, to illustrate the products function and usefulness, to make good renderings from the CAD-models and also a scale prototype, built in ABS plastic, control foam and Plexiglas (PMMA). The prototype was created mainly in a free form machine, also called a 3D-printer. Freeform production is relatively new technology for prototyping, and is an effective but an expensive way for creating physical models from a CAD-model. A part of the prototype assembly was cut out from a part, styrene from a CAD-model.The result of the project is a product that is well described through blueprints, CAD-pictures and rendered pictures. Since time has been limited in this project some boundaries were set.

Abstract:
Left-handedness is an invisible handicap in today's classrooms. The education systsem in the United States makes special considerations and accommodations for special needs of students, yet left-handed individuals do not receive much consideration in a mainstream classroom. Experts say that up to twenty percent of children in Canada and the United States are left-handed. This project discusses how these left-handed children have to work in a right-handed world. The focus of this study was to provide right-handed teachers with teaching techniques, positive suggestions, and common sense approaches to accomodate the left-handed pupil.

Abstract:

There is always a need for easy-to-follow processes that enable accurate and non-time consuming solutions. Nowadays we see a lot of different approaches to development processes in software engineering. This project is concerned with how to manage a software development process in a reliable, secure and efficient way. Software is available which provides some help for project managers / administrators to work more productively, with effective communication. Using such systems, it is possible to keep track of all the phases of development, including task distribution, making maximum use of previous hands-on experience and increasing productivity, to deliver a finished product in minimum time. No existing solution, however, fulfills all the desirable criteria. This paper describes the motivation, design and implementation of an improved development management system using Active Server Pages and Microsoft Internet Information Services with a backend Microsoft Access Database developed using a waterfall software development process. The resulting system is described and evaluated. This system will be beneficial for software houses, because they can communicate on the web, allowing efficiency gains by avoiding the need to call meetings for distribution of tasks among employees, with the additional advantage of location-transparent team management through the Internet.
