Abstract:
The purpose of the research is to introduce the manuscript of the “Bandura Playing Handbook” by an unknown author (Augsburg, Germany, 1951) into scientific circulation in the context of providing educational and methodological publications on the Ukrainian art of bandura playing abroad. The research methodology is based on the principles of historical, cultural, textual, and axiological approaches. Methods such as historical and typological, analysis and synthesis, music textual method, and musicological analysis were used, which made it possible to identify not only trends in the evolution of teaching and methodological approaches to teaching bandura playing but also the personological aspects of their formation. Particular attention is paid to the need to systematise not only the methods in printed editions of handbooks and self-tutorials on bandura but also manuscript rarities that remain in public and private archives and require proper scientific and methodological understanding. The scientific novelty of the study is determined by the introduction of the analysis of the manuscript “Bandura Playing Handbook” by an unknown author (Augsburg, Germany, 1951), created during the so-called camp period in Germany, where displaced persons (DP – Displaced Persons) were kept. The music manuscript is part of the documentary materials of the Archives of the Ukrainian Free University (Munich, Germany). Conclusions. The study analyses the handbook materials from the methodological and fingering points of view, the sequence of mastering the instrument, the formation of the bandura repertoire, and its comparison with similar examples in Ukrainian musical art. It determines the value of the handbook from the point of view of popularising the Ukrainian national musical instrument in the conditions of emigration and spreading the performing traditions of bandura art.

Abstract:
Purpose of this paper is to present traits of penal law during Stalinist period in Poland based on a handbook by I. Andrejew, L. Lernell and J. Sawicki “Prawo karne Polski Ludowej”, which was first published in 1950. For this purpose, a number of issues appearing in the publication were described, such as: materialist definition of crime, ex post facto law, penality of preparation, attitude towards pre-war legislation instituted by interpretation, criticism of sociological school in penal law, position of death penalty in punishment system. Based on characteristics of them, traits of Stalinist penal law were identified, some of which are: excessive repressiveness, subordination of law to the power, or its instrumentalization. Identification of these traits was made possible by utilization of modern literature concerning the subject, presentation of regulations from laws having effect at the time, as well as comparison of handbook’s contents with current historical knowledge. Characteristics of traits of Stalinist penal law was preceded by a description of circumstances of origins of the handbook – its position among existing course books, reviews and consideration of impact of authors’ personal background on character of their work. What is more, teaching of penal law in the early days of Peoples’ Poland was briefly described, with an indication, why work of I. Andrejew, L. Lernell and J. Sawicki was particularly needed in law schools created by communist government.

Abstract:
“Our story must begin with Charles Hume, for the whole of this grand enterprise began as a twinkle in his eye, which often twinkled” (Russell 1995). Fifty-one years ago, in 1954, besides important achievements in other fields of animal welfare, Hume and the Universities Federation for Animal Welfare (UFAW) had brought out the first edition of The UFAW Handbook on the Care and Management of Laboratory Animals, edited by Alastair Worden (Worden 1947), who was already preparing a greatly enlarged second edition with William Lane-Petter (Worden & Lane-Petter 1957). Hume had already contributed to the first edition of the Handbook an article on statistical analysis, which is clearly relevant to actual experimentation (Hume 1947); he now had the brilliant and totally original idea of starting a general study of humane technique in actual experimentation. The late Rex Burch and I were appointed to undertake this project; the moment Rex walked into my office I knew that here was not only the perfect colleague but also a lifelong friend, and I sadly miss him.

Abstract:
This paper addresses the question of the status of Slavic/Serbian language in the Ottoman Empire during the late 15th century by focusing on three multilingual language learning handbooks, which were produced at or around the Ottoman court and contain fragments in Serbian written in the Arabic script. Two of these handbooks (MSs Süleymaniye Ayasofya 4749 and Ayasofya 4750) have attracted scholarly attention since 1936. Using the historical language ideology as a hermeneutical tool, this paper first revisits the scholarly interpretations of these two manuscripts and then introduces a third, so far unnoticed codex (MS SB Berlin Or.oct.33). The analysis of the form and contents of this manuscript provides new insights into the original context in which all three manuscripts were produced, along with a series of similar handbooks which do not contain Slavic material.

Abstract:
This essay focuses on Bruno Zevi’s working period immediately after Second World War, coming back to Italy after his stay in London and in the USA. He starts right away his impressive attempt of popularizing contemporary architecture through “Metron”, the first magazine to be printed in Italy after the war, from 1945 to 1954. In this crucial phase he founded the APAO (Association for Organic Architecture), he contributed to the editing of the Manuale dell'Architetto (an handbook with all the new construction and ready-assembly techniques), he published Verso un'architettura organica (1945), Saper vedere l'architettura (1948) and Storia dell'architettura moderna (1950), he curated the first Frank Lloyd Wright exhibit in Italy and he greatly contributed to the spreading of modern architecture and urbanism all around the country. Zevi also paying special attention to social issues, raised the question of inner spaces where man lives and where the collective theme is expressed, and stressed the need of shaping the building in the name of human use and enjoyment.

“Dictionary of Modern English Usage, short forms Modern English Usage, MEU. The best-known usage manual of the 20C, compiled by H. W. Fowler and published by Oxford University Press in 1926 […]. This work in particular has made the name Fowler as well known among those interested in usage and the language as Johnson and Webster, a point of reference for both those who venerate and those who regret what he has had to say.” (Burchfield, 1992a: 311)If the quotation above is anything to go by, it tells us two things, namely that Fowler's Modern English Usage [MEU] is regarded as the best-known usage manual of the 20th century and that opinions about Fowler are highly controversial. Works like the Fowler Brothers' (1906) The King's English [KE] and Henry W. Fowler's Dictionary of Modern English Usage (1926) [MEU-1] can be regarded as role models for usage handbooks in Britain. The immense success and popularity, especially of the latter work, with new editions in 1965 (revised by Sir Ernest Gowers) [MEU-2] and in 1996 (further revised by Robert Burchfield) [MEU-3], calls for an explanation. In order to reveal the relationship between authority and success, the present article places MEU and its predecessor KE in their socio-historical contexts and then gives a detailed account of the success story of MEU. It analyses the book's reception in its three editions and its treatment in English-language histories and introductory textbooks to the English language.

Full text
Abstract:
The office of Frederick Ackerman (1878-1950) was the source of the first modern architectural handbook, Architectural Graphic Standards (1932), which was intended as a radical manifesto. Basing his practice on the economic critique of "conspicuous consumption" by Thorstein Veblen (1857-1929), Ackerman was a leader of the technocratic movement. Ackerman directed his employees to develop factual architectural data. The authors of Graphic Standards, Charles Ramsey (1884-1963) and Harold Sleeper (1893-1960), worked at Ackerman's firm, and it was for Ackerman's projects that the first versions of the handbook's plates were drawn. Graphic Standards reflected Ackerman's technocratic approach to architecture, whereby he isolated functional facts from appearance, which was understood as self-expression. In its use of diagrams, Graphic Standards reflected the view that such schematic representations were the transparent rendering of facts. Yet, as seen in some of the plates of Graphic Standards, even the most reductive diagrams inevitably include expressive elements. Through many editions, Graphic Standards has been widely hailed as the "bible" of architectural practice, and it is paradoxical that Ackerman's radical practice became the basis of today's normative commercial practices. The attempt to separate functional fact from aesthetic self-expression was an impossible project, but Ackerman's efforts to achieve a modern architecture that was derived from the nature of its use and construction to replace the design of novelties remain a significant achievement.

Abstract:
The Church of Sweden has, under the past few years, had a special focus on their Church-handbook of 1986. There has been a widely-discussed debate among the different congregations in Sweden if, and when, their Church-handbook should be exchanged for a new Church-handbook. But, is there also a risk of a change in liturgy and theology? In this essay, I have been able to identify both similarities and differences in the Church-handbook of 1986 and the Proposal of 2016. In the Church-handbook of 1986 there is a focus on "We" and in the Proposal of 2016 there have been a significant change to focus on "World-wide". This focuses on both "We" and "World-wide", are a direct connection to the ecclesiology that were in question of the publication of the Church-handbooks. So which path shall Curch of Sweden take 2017? Shall they continue with the Church-handbook of 1986 and keep a well-known liturgy or take the Proposal of 2016 into consideration? During the "trial-run" which follow every Proposal that the Church of Sweden publishes, members of congregations all around Sweden, has shown a reluctance towards the Proposal of 2016. They have shown that it's a Proposal that has not taken into consideration, the very importance of recognition and that not all of those that visits the different churches in Sween, are familiar with the liturgy.  Therefore, they claim, the Church of Sweden shall not have the Proposal of 2016 as their primarily used Church-handbook, but they can take into consideration to use it as an edition to the Church-handbook of 1986.

Abstract: The Brazilian publishing market in expansion since the first decades of the XX Century has incorporated at its own manner the speeches produced either by the hygienist movement as well as by those who understood upbringing as a way to regenerate a nation, leading it into progress and modernity. Written mostly by pediatricians, mother guidebooks were part of a collection that was intended for the education of the population. Despite the references contained in such publications regarding the scientific procedures related to children upbringing, identifying such publications as useful reading material allowed for analyzing them as one of the medical practices directed to women, in order to spread familial behavioral models that would guarantee the generation, the healthy development and upbringing of the Brazilian children. This work adopts, as its main theoretical reference, Roger Chartier's contributions about the history of books and reading, and Michel Foucalt's contributions to the understanding of power mechanisms over the populations, defined by the author as biopolitics. Production processes and indications of circulation of mother guidebooks were regarded to as fundamental elements to the understanding of the diffusion of representations over the women, the children and their upbringing, according to models proposed by medicine, as part of a bigger process of intervention in the Brazilian society. At the same time, the analysis of the reading prescriptions contained in the text and graphic characteristics of such printings allows for the approaching of the practices proposed to mothers. Due to this reason, mother guidebooks that form the corpus of this survey, published between 1919 and 1957, have been taken both as subject and as source of study. Among the raised issues, the main inquiry is concerned with how much space such printings might have taken in the process of diffusion of hygienic practices regarding either the care with the child's body as well as the child's upbringing based on medical recommendations. The privileged treatment given to woman readers beginning with the redesigning of maternal functions, according to scientific principles, also allowed for questioning the representations that might have been produced about the women's reading, published by authors and publishers of such guidebooks that have been studied, based on the insertion of different text and graphic devices.

Abstract:
Past experiences have relevant truths for the present. An uncommon work and living situation from this writer's undergraduate days shows how prejudice and stereotype can be subtly arranged, and participated in, by the nature of his surroundings. This thesis explores, through the combination of related past events with an interspersed imperative address to the reader, the ways in which the writer was stereotyped by those he served because of the limited nature of their interactions. This writer, in turn, formed prejudices against those for whom he worked. The imperative addresses to the reader advise one not to accept without question simple categories and judgments for people based solely upon circumstance and situation.

Abstract:
AbstractIt is of central interest to document that the newly developing hematopoiesis post-transplant is of donor or recipient origin. The investigations of the genotype origin of post-transplant hematopoiesis are called chimerism analysis. The term “chimerism” was first introduced into medicine in 1951. Andresen wrote that an organism with cells from two or more distinct zygote lineages is a “chimera.” Since 1956, this term was used in field of transplantation (Ford et al. Nature 177:452–4, 1956). Chimera refers itself to the Greek mythology where Homer described a fire-spitting monster with the head of a lion, a tail of a serpent, and the body of a goat terrorizing Lycia, a region in Minor Asia.

Abstract In this essay, Ghanoui examines two menstrual education films of the 1950s widely used in the United States: Molly Grows Up (1953) and As Boys Grow (1957). Ghanoui discusses how the films portrayed the menstrual cycle and how educational literature received the films. She argues that the films became popular because they eased the teaching responsibilities of school instructors without taking away their authority—the films supplemented traditional menstrual education in schools while teachers maintained jurisdiction in their classrooms.

Abstract:
This essay examines the Soviet project of literary translation into Amharic, testing its ostensibly egalitarian appeal against the USSR’s political goals. Firstly, I use a bibliographical index to overview the history of Soviet Amharic translation, demonstrating the statist nature of the project. Secondly, through a case study of the translation of Gorky’s Mother (1906), I analyze the limits of state control over a translation project. I conclude that, despite the literalistic mode of translation strictly imposed by the Soviet publisher, translators could adjust their work to transmit a particular message to his readership. Books, as cultural goods, are not only distinct from market commodities; they resist being reduced to political functions. Despite the state’s significant investment of resources, the USSR could not determine which books would become popular and domesticated in subaltern nations, and which would be rejected.

Abstract:
Abstract ASME’s Center for Research and Technology Development has published a number of risk-based inspection “guideline” books all with a standard format. Now they are publishing a risk-based inspections “Handbook” for fossil fuel plants that also follows this standard format. However, because portions of the “Handbook” refer to human error, not only has a Human Factors Engineering “Appendix” been added to expand the subject but the “Appendix” has been designed to follow the standard format in all the other risk-based inspection books. This at first seemed to be unusual because the “Handbook” assesses structural failures and the “Appendix” assesses human failures. However, for the parts in the “Handbook” that directly refer to human error, the parts in the “Appendix” closely match the format in the “Handbook”. For the parts in the “Handbook” that do not refer to human error, new purposes were created for those parts in the “Appendix”. This paper compares the commonalties and differences between the two formats and lists expected findings where the parts match as well as unexpected findings where the parts in the “Appendix” discuss new applications. In these findings, this paper shows that the risk-based inspection procedure in fossil fuel plants require the human error procedure and the results from the human error procedure feed back into the Risk-based inspection procedure. This paper’s introduction describes the ASME’s overall risk-based inspection program and how the “Handbook” and “Appendix” fit. Next, in the procedure section, the risk-based inspection procedure for fossil fuel plants is described with highlights of where a human error procedure is required and then the human error procedure is described. In the comparison section, the commonalties and differences between the two procedures are described and expected and unexpected findings are discussed. Finally, the paper concludes that both risk-based inspection and human error procedures need to have better plant-specific data and that the number of opportunities are growing for new applications.

Abstract:
Abstract Process planners usually need to make modifications to recommended cutting conditions obtained from machining data handbooks in order to satisfy requirements for individual operation. However, because these modifications are based on the experience of process planners, the systematization of this procedure requires experience-oriented methods. In this paper, a new procedure and technology that allows the implementation of an intelligent system for the milling process is proposed. A Mill-COPS based on such a proposal has been developed. Neural network methodology is introduced to identify mathematical models for optimizing the cutting conditions in this system. The results are demonstrated with respect to given cutting conditions.

Abstract:
Abstract ASME’s Center for Research and Technology Development is publishing a Handbook with a Human Factors Engineering Appendix for risk-based inspections of fossil fuel Plants. This paper shows the results of applying human error and long term memory models to a technique that estimates the optimum time to inspect equipment. One result is clarification of Bayes Rule and the optimum inspection technique. Another result is applying the inspection technique to retraining people. The third result is changing the method of presenting training material. Table 1 shows how the information in this paper is presented. After a brief introduction, the idea of prior, new information, and posterior is applied to three situations: putting a golf ball, Bayes Rule, and optimizing inspections. The technique for optimizing inspections is then applied to retraining people. Finally, the idea of prior, new information, and posterior is applied as a training method. This paper has these three goals. One, explain a technique that shows the optimum time to inspect equipment. Two, expand this technique to also show the optimum time to retrain people and a new technique to help retrain them. Three, recognize the need for collecting and maintaining failure rate data.

Abstract:
Reengineering Science becomes a major goal to support high quality education in the new Information and Communication Technology millennium. Ubiquitous learning becomes a real life necessity. The new gadgets used by students provide access to Servers offering large resources to be used both for entertainment and education. Recently, technical education makes use of new ICT developments. Not only virtual laboratories but accessing resources available on "clouds" are real facts. This paper considers a course in Software Reliability Engineering in order to describe the usage of new technologies to provide a resource available to users connected to servers supporting various formats. Mobile learning is also supported for the mentioned course. The course describes not only fundamentals of the Reliability Engineering, but it presents software reliability models, computer aided software reliability tools (CASRE, SREPT, Frestimate), and case studies. The following formats available to students: HTML5, EPUB and MOBI (to mention only specific formats for ubiquitous learning) make use of various types of objects: text, equations, images, and video. These artifacts were obtained by processing a previous course written in "Microsoft Word" with multimedia attached resources. Old multimedia files will be converted to be embedded in the new formats. Abstract:
The Graph Model of Combinatory Logic (Engeler, 1981) is also a mathematical model for "how does the brain think". It attempts to explain how complex scripts of behavior and conceptual content can reside in, combine, and interact on large neural networks (Engeler 2019). This has an impact on building intelligent systems that interact with humans. Intelligent systems should employ the same kind of concepts humans do; otherwise, their actions remain incomprehensible and erratic to human users, concepts can be represented in the Graph Model by using the "Lambda-Theorem" found be Barendregt in 1977.Both the Graph Model and the mathematical model for the human brain have been published as part of Theoretical Computer Science and remain thus out of the reach of normal AI engineers. Nevertheless, they suggest solutions for today's problems with Intelligent Systems, such as autonomous vehicles mastering the traffic in Palermo, or robots caring for people and working together with them. Intelligent Systems need to adhere to concepts quite similar to humans that follow certain rules in their behavior. The paper explains what a “Concept” is in AI, how to state requirements for AI, and how to test them. Intelligent Systems using concepts behave similar to humans, following rules but are still able to break the rules when need arises, and can be certified for safety and security; solving certain difficulties for Learning Machines that can learn and unlearn.ReferencesH. Abstract:
Moderate self-esteem is considered desirable from perspectives such as leading to effective decision-making (Baumeister et al. 2003; Kirkpatrick and Ellis 2003). One factor that can lead to low self-esteem is the perceived large difference between the ideal self and the actual self-views (Bills, Vance, and McLEAN 1951; Hannover, Birkner, and Pöhlmann 2006). Therefore, we hypothesized that through an experience as if one had become an “Invisible Human”, self-esteem reduction could be prevented by diminishing one's existence and removing their awareness of comparing one's ideal self with one's actual self-views. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the impact of the Invisible Human experience of the invisible human on self-esteem.In the experiment, participants experienced the Invisible Human experience through Augmented Reality (AR). (1) the feeling of being an invisible human, (2) the sense of one's physical self-presence, (3) the self-evaluation consciousness, (4) the difference between the ideal self and the real self, and (5) state self-esteem scale were evaluated through questionnaires before and after the AR experience. In the experience, images acquired using a camera attached to a head-mounted display (HMD) were processed in real-time to create an image in which only the body of the participants seems to have disappeared from the real view, which was then presented on the HMD. Valid data obtained were N=24 (15 females and 9 males, age 21.3²2.3 years). The results showed that Significant differences were found in (1), (2), and (3) before and after the experience, which indicates that the Invisible Man experience made participants feel more as if they were invisible, their sense of self-presence decreased, and their self-evaluation consciousness weakened. There was also a tendency for (4) the difference between the ideal self and actual self-views to become smaller. However, there was no significant difference in the (5) state self-esteem scale. The impact of the Invisible Human experience might change depending on the participants' usual level of self-esteem. If low self-esteem can be high and high self-esteem can be low, then the Invisible Human experience may work effectively to maintain their self-esteem to be moderate. In future studies, more evaluations with a larger number of participants are needed.Baumeister, Roy F., Jennifer D. Campbell, Joachim I. Krueger, and Kathleen D. Abstract:
Background:It is necessary to point out that ergonomics was late in paying attention to the issue of social factors and their effects on work. Carayon, (2021), urged ergonomists to take into account the influence of the social environment on work. Social environment is very important for the human being in which he practices his humanity and helps others to exercise their humanity.According to Amabile, et al. (1996) social environment includes two types of components: the positive components (autonomy/ freedom, encouragement of creativity, resources, and challenging work), and the negative components (lack of training, and management/ workers inconsistency). In this research, the researchers considered the positive components of social environment. Social ergonomics enhances the positive components of the social environment and at the same time it works to reduce the harmful effects of the negative components of the social environment. Social ergonomics achieves these goals through various methods including volunteerism. In this research, the focus will be on volunteer work. Researchers believe that volunteering strengthens social bonds, and makes individuals more connected to the community (Hsiao, et al. 2020). In addition, volunteering supports the positive elements of the social environment. “Twiza” is a form of volunteerism that is widespread in the Touat region (western area in Algeria). It means the assistance provided by members of a community, to members of another community, who are in dire need of this assistance. Objectives: This research aims to answer the following question: Can freedom /autonomy, encouragement of creativity, resources and challenging work enhance the positive components of the social environment in the Ksar?Methodology: Researchers applied the descriptive method, using a snowball technique sample which consisted of (29) volunteers from whom data were collected through a questionnaire and an Interview. Results and discussion: Individuals’ answers show that volunteer work does not affect individuals’ freedom, nor their sense of independence while working. The vast majority of respondents indicated that those who participate in voluntary work exercise their freedom naturally. Also, the volunteers show that supervisors during the volunteer work encourage them to be creative and innovative. This made them feel safe and secure.Furthermore, respondents agree that the resources required for volunteer work are available to everyone. None of the volunteers complained about the lack of resources or their unavailability. The respondents indicated that the availability of resources is a factor in the success of volunteer work. The respondents also praised the positive challenges that exist in volunteer work, especially in the maintenance of the Foggara. It is the work that made them feel they are achieving a noble patriotic duty. Conclusion: This research studied the topic of voluntary work, especially in the maintenance of Foggara in the Touat region and has found that volunteering enhances the social environment, and from the perspective of social ergonomics, that the environment is fitted to the individuals.References:Amabile, T. Abstract:
The increasing advance of the new technologies applied in the retail market, make it common to sell products without the personal contact between seller and buyer, being the registration and payment of the products made in electronic equipment of self-checkout. The large-scale use of these devices forces the consumer to participate in the service process, which was previously done through interaction with the company's employees. The user of the self-checkout system thus performs all the steps of the purchase, from weighing the products, registering them and making the payment. This is seen as a partial employee, whose participation or performance in providing services can be used by the company to improve the quality of its operations (KELLEY, et al 1993). However this participation does not always satisfy the user, and may cause negative experiences related to usability failures. This article presents the results of the evaluation by the users of the self-checkout system. The data were collected in Portugal through a questionnaire to 400 users. The study analyzes the degree of satisfaction regarding the quality and usability of the system, the degree of motivation for its adoption, as well as the profile of the users. Analysis of the sample data reveals that users have basic or higher education and use new technologies very often. They also have a high domain of the system and an easy learning of its use. The reason for using self-checkout instead of the traditional checkout is mainly due to "queues at checkout with operator" and "at the small volume of products". In general, the sample reveals a high degree of satisfaction with the service and with quality, however, in comparative terms, self-checkout is not considered better than operator checkout. The evaluation of the interaction with the self-checkout was classified according to twenty-six attributes of the system. The analysis identifies five groups with similar characteristics, of which two have low scores. "Cancellation of registered articles", "search for articles without a bar code", "manual registration", "bagging area", "error messages", "weight sensor" and “invoice request "are seven critical attributes of the system. The results indicate that the usability analysis oriented to the self-checkout service can be determinant for the user-system interaction. The implications of empirical findings are discussed together with guidelines for future research. Keywords: Interaction Design, Self service, Self-checkout, User evaluation, UsabilityReferencias ABRAHÃO, J., et al (2013). Abstract:
Channel Islands National Park (CHIS) has conducted long-term ecological monitoring of the kelp forests around San Miguel, Santa Rosa, Santa Cruz, Anacapa and Santa Barbara Islands since 1982. The original permanent transects were established at 16 sites between 1981 and 1986 with the first sampling beginning in 1982, this being the 33rd year of monitoring. An additional site, Miracle Mile, was established at San Miguel Island in 2001 by a commercial fisherman with assistance from the park. Miracle Mile was partially monitored from 2002 to 2004, and then fully monitored (using all KFM protocols) since 2005. In 2005, 16 additional permanent sites were established to collect baseline data from inside and adjacent to four marine reserves that were established in 2003. Sampling results from all 33 sites mentioned above are included in this report. Funding for the Kelp Forest Monitoring Program (KFM) in 2014 was provided by the National Park Service (NPS). The 2014 monitoring efforts utilized 49 days of vessel time to conduct 1,040 dives for a total of 1,059 hours of bottom time. Population dynamics of a select list of 71 “indicator species” (consisting of taxa or categories of algae, fish, and invertebrates) were measured at the 33 permanent sites. In addition, population dynamics were measured for all additional species of fish observed at the sites during the roving diver fish count. Survey techniques follow the CHIS Kelp Forest Monitoring Protocol Handbook (Davis et al. 1997) and an update to the sampling protocol handbook currently being developed (Kushner and Sprague, in progress). The techniques utilize SCUBA and surface-supplied-air to conduct the following monitoring protocols: 1 m2 quadrats, 5 m2 quadrats, band transects, random point contacts, fish transects, roving diver fish counts, video transects, size frequency measurements, and artificial recruitment modules. Hourly temperature data were collected using remote temperature loggers at 32 sites, the exception being Miracle Mile where there is no temperature logger installed. This annual report contains a brief description of each site including any notable observations or anomalies, a summary of methods used, and monitoring results for 2014. All the data collected during 2014 can be found in the appendices and in an Excel workbook on the NPS Integrated Resource Management Applications (IRMA) portal. In the 2013 annual report (Sprague et al. 2020) several changes were made to the appendices. Previously, annual report density and percent cover data tables only included the current year’s data. Now, density and percent cover data are presented in graphical format and include all years of available monitoring data. Roving diver fish count (RDFC), fish size frequency, natural habitat size frequency, and Artificial Recruitment Module (ARM) size frequency data are now stored on IRMA at https://irma.nps.gov/DataStore/Reference/Profile/2259651. The temperature data graphs in Appendix L include the same graphs that were used in past reports, but include additional violin plot sections that compare monthly means from the current year to past years. In addition to the changes listed above, the layout of the discussion section was reordered by species instead of by site. The status of kelp forests differed among the five park islands. This is a result of a combination of factors including but not limited to, oceanography, biogeography and associated differences in species abundance and composition, as well as sport and commercial fishing pressure. All 33 permanent sites were established in areas that had or were historically known to have had kelp forests in the past. In 2014, 15 of the 33 sites monitored were characterized as developing kelp forest, kelp forest or mature kelp forest. In addition, three sites were in a state of transition. Two sites were part kelp forest and part dominated by Strongylocentrotus purpuratus...
