Abstract:
Several Lower Palaeolithic sites discovered in the territory of the Caucasus for almost a century give us many arguments to consider this territory as a center of these cultures. Situated at the crossroads of three worlds - Africa, Europe and Asia, - the Caucasus, especially the Transcaucasia, represents a key area in migration ways of the first hominids “Out-of-Africa” to our continent. Many Acheulean cultures, of various technology and typology, coexist and develop in this region. However, the element present in all Transcaucasian lithic assemblages is the hand axe. In this context, the aim of this PhD thesis is to provide information about the Lower Palaeolithic period in the Caucasus. The study is based on the morpho-technological and typological study of the hand axes. Samples of hand axes are from South Caucasus sites, in particular from the Kudaro I cave (MIS 9-8) and the Lashe-Balta (South Ossetia, Georgia) and the Dzhraber (Armenia) groups of surface Acheulean sites. The Kudaro I cave is one of the few stratified sites; it represents a comparison site for other surface site collections. The proposed classification is applied to the samples. It is based on the distinction between "hand axes", "bifacial tools" and "pieces considered as hand axes" by Vasily P. LYUBIN, the head of the excavation, in the 1960s. Therefore, in the Kudaro I cave, among 138 pieces considered as "hand axes" by the researcher only 27 are hand axes, complete and partial, made in sandstone, quartzite sandstone and schist flakes, of a lanceolate, ovate and amygdaloid morphology and 58 are bifacial tools. In the Lashe-Balta group of surface sites, among 56 objects only 31 are hand axes, complete and partial, and unifaces in andesite volcanic bombs, of ovate, amygdaloid and cordiform morphology and 15 bifacial tools. In the Dzhraber group of surface sites, among 105 objects only 75 are hand axes, complete and partial, and unifaces in obsidian flakes, of cordiform, amygdaloid, ovate and lanceolate morphology and 7 bifacial tools. Comparison data show that the hand axes from the Kudaro I cave and from the Lashe-Balta group of surface sites are very close, despite the different nature of the raw materials. The hand axes from the Dzhraber group of surface sites, in turn, share not only the techno-typological features of the Ossetian pieces, but in the vast majority of cases those of the obsidian hand axes from Turkey. Here, the question of the relationship "Rock - Technique(s)" arises. Then, that methodology was applied to the hand axes discovered on the surface in the regions of the Mangystau Peninsula, the Aral Sea and the Mugodzhar Mountains in Kazakhstan (place of conservation: Institute of Archaeology named after A.Kh. Margulan, Almaty). The study of the Kazakh collections is unpublished. The collections from the Mugodzhar Mountains and the Mangystau Peninsula are composed of complete and partial hand axes in quartzite sandstone and in flint, of ovate and lanceolate morphology. The hand axes from the Aral Sea region are attributed to a later period. The comparison provides necessary elements to support the hypothesis of occupation of Eurasia by the first humans of the first migration wave by the "Western" way through the Caucasus and not by the "Eastern" one. It is reinforced by the study of the collection without bifaces from the Acheulean layers of the Ulalinka site (Altai Mountains, Russia)

Mahoney, Jamie B. "The Artist's Hand in the Digital Age." VCU Scholars Compass, 2007. http://scholarscompass.vcu.edu/etd/4914.

Full text
Abstract:
For the first ten years of my career I practiced my craft — advertising art direction — exclusively by hand. To help me in the design process itself, I hired specialists. For typography, for instance, I chose a firm I admired in Minneapolis where the typographers would hand cut the film negatives letter by letter. In those days — the 1980s — each area of design had master craftsmen. I can remember one day walking into a warehouse with thirty-foot ceilings. On the back wall I saw a large horizontal canvas. The artist was suspended from scaffolding and covered in speckled paint dots. I wasn’t in an artist’s studio looking at a masterpiece half-finished. I was admiring a billboard — a hand painted one-of-a-kind billboard. This is not to say that the old methods of working by hand were entirely idyllic. They had countless drawbacks. IT took several days to put together a layout with Pantone paper and transfer type, only to realize the color combination was wrong and the time wasted. Because processes were slow and labor-intensive, choices were limited. In the mid 1980s, design studios and creative departments started using computers. For the first time I was able to select a color scheme, click a button, and see seemingly endless options instantaneously. It wasn’t long before the skilled craftsmen of type were replaced with digitized fonts loaded directly onto hard drives. Suddenly, the idea of working type by hand became economically unfeasible. The typographers closed up shop, threw out their old tools, and went out to look for new jobs. Several years later billboards were being painted on vinyl sheets right from our electronic files. Perfect replications of the original reproduced with speed and precision saved time and manpower. The new process had replaced the billboard artists almost overnight. I saw a generation of artisans exchanged for a generation of desktop publishers. Just like the craftsmen of the past, older methods of graphic design have been cast aside finding their way uneasily into the category of fine art. And now fine art, too, may cast them aside. Recently the Dean of the Fine Arts Program at Virginia Commonwealth University has held several meetings where he discussed the elimination of older printmaking methods in order to expand digital printmaking. Computers, it seems, will not be simply content with displacing the old hand processes; they want to eliminate them. For most young designers the computer has completely replaced the hand in every stage of the design process. I’ve noticed in many cases designers aren’t problem solving outside of the computer. It isn’t even considered. Certainly, the goal and outcome of my creative project were not intended to revive antiquated hand methods, at least as they historically existed. But hopefully, I’ve created something original by combining both hand methods and modern technology. If nothing else, I want younger designers to think beyond the 20GB hard drive as the only tool in their process.

Lyon, Robert James. "Why are pulsars hard to find?" Thesis, University of Manchester, 2016. https://www.research.manchester.ac.uk/portal/en/theses/why-are-pulsars-hard-to-find(f15226ec-355d-4794-b2b8-e0a8e793948e).html.

Full text
Abstract:
Searches for pulsars during the past fifty years, have been characterised by two problems making their discovery difficult: i) an increasing volume of data to be searched, and ii) an increasing number of `candidate' pulsar detections arising from that data, requiring analysis. Whilst almost all are caused by noise or interference, these are often indistinguishable from real pulsar detections. Deciding which candidates should be studied is therefore difficult. Indeed it has become known as the `candidate selection problem'. This thesis presents an interdisciplinary study of the selection problem, with the aim of developing a new method able to mitigate it. Specifically for future pulsar surveys undertaken with the Square kilometre Array (SKA). Through a combination of critical literature evaluations, theoretical modelling exercises, and empirical investigations, the selection problem is described in-depth here for the first time. It is shown to be characterised by the dominance of Gaussian distributed noise signals, a factor that no existing selection method accounts for. It also reveals the presence of a significant trend in survey data rates, which suggest that candidate selection is transitioning from an off-line processing procedure, to an on-line, and real-time, decision making process. In response, a new real-time machine learning based method, the GH-VFDT, is introduced in this thesis. The results presented here show that a significant improvement in selection performance can be achieved using the GH-VFDT, which utilises a learning procedure optimised for data characterised by skewed class distributions. Whilst the principled development of new numerical features that maximise the separation between pulsars and Gaussian noise, have also greatly improved GH-VFDT pulsar recall. It is therefore concluded that the sub-optimal performance of existing selection systems, is due to a combination of poor feature design, insensitivity to noise, and an inability to deal with skewed class distributions.

Merritt, Sydnee. "Putin's Invisible Hand: Why are GONGOs Increasingly Resurfacing under the Putin Administration?" Digital Commons @ East Tennessee State University, 2020. https://dc.etsu.edu/honors/521.

Abstract:
Government Organized Non-Governmental Organizations (GONGOs), once common during the Soviet-era, are now increasingly resurfacing under the Putin administration. Once completely abolished from Russia, these deceitful organizations are accompanying various new laws signed by President Putin in the Russian Federation. While Russia does not claim to be a liberal democracy with a free civil society and Putin has described his state as a “managed democracy,” the puzzle still remains why the Putin administration is secretly using organizations to fulfill government ploys. This thesis will analyze the types of GONGOs along with new laws and policies signed into effect under the Putin and Medvedev Administration. I conclude this thesis by partially confirming my hypothesis that president Putin is rationally choosing to create these organizations in an effort to consolidate his power and promote Russian culture.

Grant, I. C. "'Sand in the hand' : young people's relationships with commercial media in the digital age." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2006. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.651729.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis explores young people's experiences of contemporary, commercial media. It aims to provide a holistic understanding of new and more traditional media use. Moving beyond media effects, it takes an active consumer-centred approach, contextualising ‘new media’ consumption within the everyday lifestyles of young people. It compares and contrasts practitioner tactics with young people's lived experiences of internet and mobile use. The study draws its theoretical framework from the fields of communication studies, consumer behaviour, cultural studies, marketing, sociology and social psychology. Initial fieldwork consisted of 15 interviews with ‘expert’ agency practitioners, investigating perceptions of youth marketing and the tactics deployed. The main consumer phase explored the mediated experiences of adolescents aged 13-17. A total of 175 secondary school pupils completed self-completion questionnaire, a smaller sample then contributing a time-based diary. Beyond the quantitative fieldwork, 45 pupils participated in the qualitative phase, guided by the principles of phenomenology. Photo-elicitation and psycho-drawing techniques were utilised to enrichen discussions. Young people were found to have a complex range of ‘new-media’ experiences, embedded in their ‘in home’ and ‘out of home’ lifestyles. Their active use of the internet, for mood enhancement, experiential learning, escapism and communication, rarely encompassed commercial motivations. Of several barriers to ‘new-media’ use, online practitioner tactics caused the greatest concern. For many young people, such actions were deeply de-motivating, constituting an unwanted intrusion, in contrast to the symbiotic relationship synonymous with traditional advertising. Their consequent elusiveness is epitomised through the metaphor “sand in the hand”.

McDonald, Bonny. "Buried Alive: Hard Science Fiction Since the Golden Age." TopSCHOLAR®, 2005. http://digitalcommons.wku.edu/theses/461.

Full text
Abstract:
A substantial body of science fiction authors, critics and fans appreciate the literary attention the New Wave of the '60s and '70s brought to the genre of science fiction, but regret the seemingly lasting move away from the hard science classics of the '50s and before. They argue that "the hard stuff' is at the very heart of sf and that its future—still on the path set by the New Wave—is ostensibly a dead end. Many important critics along with hundreds of sf fan websites display this fatalistic concern, asking over and over "Is hard science fiction dead?" The answer is no. These reactionaries suffer from a serious case of the Good Old Days Syndrome (not to mention the Good Old Boys Syndrome). A close look at the state of the genre reveals that hard sf is not only alive and well but also that contemporary hard sf is more in line with its critics' definition of hard sf than the very stories they cite as exemplars of it. Contrary to the accusations of noted sf critics, it may well be that a new golden age of sf is dawning, one with an even truer scientific core as well as a commitment to literary quality. This thesis will expose the curious contradiction between the hard and soft / old and new sf. The introduction will examine the definition of hard sf and declarations of its unfortunate demise. Each of three chapters will compare two stories—one from sf s Golden Age and another after the supposed death of the genre. In each, I will show how classic examples of hard sf regularly fail to meet the objective, scientific criteria they purport to uphold and how contemporary stories—even while focusing (to varying degrees) on the political and personal—better espouse the principles of hard sf. Ultimately, it seems that those who descry hard sf s death miss not the technical aspects of hard sf that, even by their definition, distinguish it from softer sf, but the traditional Golden Age values of male dominance, imperialism, and anti-emotionalism. Newer stories' feminism and redefinitions of progress blind conventional readers to their truly hard-core, science-based foundations. The conclusion will consider what hard sf s paradigm shifts mean in terms of our evolving relationship to science. Specifically, in our technological age, science is not merely a field that studies how things work, but a field that can help us to illuminate and interpret our place in the universe. Ultimately, hard science fiction is not dead, it's just doing something different from what it used to.

Prime, Jacqueline Marie. "The Ape Ecological Niche: Posture and Hand Use in Gibbons and Macaques and the Influence of Manual Skill on Cognitive Development in Apes and Humans." OpenSIUC, 2014. https://opensiuc.lib.siu.edu/dissertations/844.

Full text
Abstract:
Apes share a distinct set of morphological and anatomical characteristics that allow us to use our arms and hands in unique ways. Apes also have relatively larger brains with similar sulcal patterning indicating there is a distinctively hominoid brain structure. These features in great apes have consistently been linked with higher cognitive skills and are considered to be the precursors leading to the exceptional developments of humans over evolutionary time – establishing the physiological basis that allows us to make and use tools to modify our environments and build our unique cultures. This study examines the general model that orthogrady and suspensory postures were the antecedents for enhanced manipulative ability in apes, which consequently set the stage for enhanced cognitive abilities in early hominoids. The primary hypothesis is that if single-handed prehensility is enhanced by suspensory orthogrady, then we may predict ape feeding style will differ significantly from that of pronograde monkeys, allowing them to access foods in unique ways. Using sympatric white-handed gibbons, Hylobates lar, representative of orthograde apes, and pig-tailed macaques, Maccaca leonina, representative of pronograde monkeys, as models, the comparative feeding styles of primates were analyzed focusing on their positional behaviour and manual skill. Results support the hypothesis that gibbons exhibit a unique feeding style associated with their orthogrady/suspensory postures in comparison with pronograde macaques. This was demonstrated by their increased access to food in the trees with more stable postures, an expanded foraging radius, and more frequent use of the terminal branches, and was evident in their complex manipulative skills with larger manual repertoires, more variability in wrist use, and more sophisticated manual techniques. Moreover, significant differences in positional behaviour and manual skill demonstrated by gibbons and macaques were evident even when feeding on the same types of foods within their shared environment. This study proposes that the combined uniquely ape traits to forage in suspensory orthograde postures with precision dexterity have allowed apes to become highly selective feeders within their environments, leading to advance manual dexterity and cognitive prowess in apes.

Schmidt, Benjamin. "When are two hands better than one? : a study of bimanual interaction." Thesis, University of Canterbury. Computer Science and Software Engineering, 2002. http://hdl.handle.net/10092/9617.

Full text
Abstract:
In everyday life people skillfully use both hands in complex tasks such as driving a car or drawing a picture. However, when attempting tasks on a computer, we are normally restricted to using our dominant hand for direct manipulation. Bimanual interaction is the study of how systems can be de- veloped to allow users to take advantage of their capacity for skilled bimanual interaction. Four design principles for developing bimanual interaction systems are distilled from a review of the current research. Principle One discusses the importance of understanding how people perform bimanual actions. Principle Two discusses what type of devices and actions should be used. Principle Three describes how bimanual interaction techniques can be used to eliminate modes. Principle Four discusses how bimanual interaction techniques can be used to increase usable screen space and reduce time to target and attention switching. The principles are used to develop two systems (Bi-DM and Bi-Draw). These systems are evaluated with their equivalent traditional unimanual sys- tems (Uni-DM and Uni-Draw). Bi-DM was slightly faster than Uni-DM though the di erence was just outside the 95% signi cance level. Bi-Draw was signi cantly slower than Uni-Draw. The users were required to complete the tasks approximately. An experiment with an expert user of Bi-Draw showed that similar times to Uni-Draw can be achieved. These results disagreed with prior work that showed bimanual interaction systems are more e cient than their equivalent unimanual versions. A third experiment based on earlier work was conducted. The users were required to complete tasks with a high accuracy level. Comparing the results from this experiment to the one on which it was based indicates that the low quality of the non-preferred mouse was probably responsible for the poor performance of our bimanual systems. Other likely factors detrimentally a ecting the bimanual results include the low accuracy required for completing the tasks and the short training periods.

Abstract:
Bone age assessment can be useful in a variety of ways. It can help pediatricians predict growth, puberty entrance, identify diseases, and assess if a person lacking proper identification is a minor or not. It is a time-consuming process that is also prone to intra-observer variation, which can cause problems in many ways. This thesis attempts to improve and speed up bone age assessments by using different object detection methods to detect and segment bones anatomically important for the assessment and using these segmented bones to train deep learning models to predict bone age. A dataset consisting of 12811 X-ray hand images of persons ranging from infant age to 19 years of age was used. In the first research question, we compared the performance of three state-of-the-art object detection models: Mask R-CNN, Yolo, and RetinaNet. We chose the best performing model, Yolo, to segment all the growth plates in the phalanges of the dataset. We proceeded to train four different pre-trained models: Xception, InceptionV3, VGG19, and ResNet152, using both the segmented and unsegmented dataset and compared the performance. We achieved good results using both the unsegmented and segmented dataset, although the performance was slightly better using the unsegmented dataset. The analysis suggests that we might be able to achieve a higher accuracy using the segmented dataset by adding the detection of growth plates from the carpal bones, epiphysis, and the diaphysis. The best performing model was Xception, which achieved a mean average error of 1.007 years using the unsegmented dataset and 1.193 years using the segmented dataset.

Full text
Abstract:
South Africa is one of the most violent nations in the world and has an extremely high incidence of road accidents and work place injuries. The precise effect of this on upper limb injury statistics is not known as the incidence and prevalence of these conditions has yet to be determined. Hand injuries are, however, common worldwide and, in South Africa, may be complex in nature. This places a demand on occupational therapy services to provide comprehensive upper limb rehabilitation, a responsibility that inevitably falls on novice occupational therapists at some point. Occupational therapists in South Africa are required to complete a year of compulsory Community Service after graduating before they are permitted to practice independently. These placements are often in rural, under-resourced areas and graduates are faced with multiple new roles while negotiating the transition into practice. No published research to date has described the general experience of Community Service occupational therapists in South Africa or the extent to which these therapists are equipped to treat patients with upper limb injuries and conditions. The study sought to determine the extent to which Community Service occupational therapists are equipped to treat patients with upper limb injuries and conditions.

Full text
Abstract:
The flux cored arc welding process has some characteristic features and is therefore established in the industry to fabricate hardfacing. One advantage of the process is the possibility to vary the alloy content of the weld metal by manipulating the chemical composition of the filler material. Moreover, it is possible to produce self shielding electrodes, which show advantages for outdoor applications. One the other hand this process creates high dilution rates. One possibility to avoid this effect is to apply a magnetic field in order to deflect the welding arc. In this thesis, the influence of a transversal magnetic field on the weld seam formation during FCAW was investigated. An increase of the weld width and a simultaneous decrease of the penetration depth was achieved at a certain deflection. The influence of the magnetic oscillation was found to be stronger for short circuit mode than for pulsed mode. Furthermore, high frequencies in combination with a high magnetic flux density caused a reduced process stability and consequently a worsening of the weld bead appearance. Apart from that, the drop detachment was inhibited, when a strong magnetic field was applied during pulsed and spray mode.

Abstract:
This study constructed contemporary radiographic bone age estimation standards for the Queensland paediatric population through a morphological and morphometric analysis of the ossification of the hand and wrist. A digital application is introduced and recommended as an alternative to traditional techniques to improve the accuracy of maturational assessment in a multi-ancestral population. These standards will improve the reliability of bone age estimation in clinical and forensic applications.

Master, Sabah. "Motor Control and Perception during Haptic Sensing: Effects of Varying Attentional Demand, Stimuli and Age." Thèse, Université d'Ottawa / University of Ottawa, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/23548.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis describes a series of experiments in human observers using neurophysiological and behavioural approaches to investigate the effects of varying haptic stimuli, attentional demand and age on motor control and perception during haptic sensing (i.e., using the hand to seek sensory information by touch). In Experiments I-IV, transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) was used to explore changes in corticomotor excitability when participants were actively engaged in haptic sensing tasks. These studies showed that corticospinal excitability, as reflected in motor evoked potential (MEP) amplitude, was greatly enhanced when participants were engaged in different forms of haptic sensing. Interestingly, this extra corticomotor facilitation was absent when participants performed finger movements without haptic sensing or when attention was diverted away from haptic input by a concurrent cognitive task (Exp I). This provided strong evidence that the observed corticomotor facilitation was likely central in origin and related to haptic attention. Neuroimaging has shown activation of the parieto-frontal network likely subserves this aspect of haptic perception. Further, this haptic-specific corticomotor facilitation was finely modulated depending on whether participants focused attention on identifying material (texture) as opposed to geometric properties of scanned surfaces (Exp II). With regards to aging effects, haptic-related corticomotor facilitation was associated with higher recognition accuracy in seniors (Exp III). In line with this, seniors exhibited similar levels of haptic-related corticomotor facilitation to young adults when task demands were adjusted for age (Exp IV). Interestingly, both young and senior adults also showed substantial corticomotor facilitation in the ‘resting’ hand when the ipsilateral hand was engaged in haptic sensing (Exp IV). Simply touching the stimulus without being required to identify its properties (no attentional task demands) produced no extra corticomotor facilitation in either hand or age group, attesting again to the specificity of the effects with regards to haptic attention. In Experiments V-VI, the ability to recognise 2-D letters by touch was investigated using kinematic and psychophysical measures. In Experiment V, we characterized how age affected contact forces deployed at the fingertip. This investigation showed that older adults exhibited lower normal force and increased letter-to-letter variability in normal force when compared to young adults. This difference in contact force likely contributed to longer contact times and lower recognition accuracy in older adults, suggesting a central contribution to age-related declines in haptic perception. Consistent with this interpretation, Experiment VI showed that haptic letter recognition in older adults was characterized not only by lower recognition accuracy but also by substantial increases in response times and specific patterns of confusion between letters. All in all, these investigations highlight the critical interaction of central factors such as attentional demand with aging effects on motor and perceptual aspects of haptic sensing. Of particular significance is the clear demonstration that corticomotor excitability is greatly enhanced when a haptic sensing component (i.e., attending to specific haptic features) is added to simple finger movements performed at minimal voluntary effort levels (typically <15 % of the maximal effort). These observations underline the therapeutic potential of active sensory training strategies based on haptic sensing tasks for the re-education of motor and perceptual deficits in hand function (e.g., subsequent to a stroke). The importance of adjusting attentional demands and stimuli is highlighted, particularly with regards to special considerations in the aging population.

Abstract:
This study was undertaken to explore and understand the attitudes and beliefs of audiology students about Deaf and Hard of Hearing people. The problem of practice was that some audiologists continue to advise parents not to sign with their Deaf or Hard of Hearing children. This problem was studied using the conceptual framework of General Systems Theory, looking at the problem through the lens of Critical Disability Theory, to determine if audiology students view Deaf and Hard of Hearing people from a medical model or from a social/cultural model. Using a qualitative case study methodology, I interviewed six first-year doctor of audiology (AuD) students at a university on the west coast of the United States to delve deeply into their attitudes and beliefs about Deaf and Hard of Hearing people. This study found that these audiology students had overall social/cultural attitudes about Deaf people on the Attitudes to Deafness Scale. Yet, in case-study interviews, which provided a more in-depth look at the views of the students, the terminology the students used demonstrated some institutionalized audist attitudes and beliefs. Every student showed a mixture of medical and social/cultural beliefs. The students made a distinction between the words “Deaf” and “Hard of Hearing.” All the students believed that parents of Deaf children should be offered “communication options” – (signed or spoken language). The four students who had studied American Sign Language (ASL) and Deaf culture were more open to the use of ASL. The two students who had the lowest scores on the Attitudes to Deafness Scale had no experience or background in ASL and demonstrated a preference for amplification technology and spoken language. The students believed that Hard of Hearing children should be raised with spoken language only. The students had a positive attitude about ASL but demonstrated a preference for spoken language. The audiology students understood their role in the medical system, but did not yet understand their part in the Deaf education system. They believed that parent-to-parent support is important but did not understand how audiologists might collaborate with the Deaf community and with teachers of the Deaf as families journey through the process of raising Deaf and Hard of Hearing children.

Abstract:

The aim of the present study was to determine the distributions of and correlations between hand preference, visual acuity and eye preference through a series of tests in 50 males 50 females aged between 17 and 39 years. Handedness was determined through the Edinburgh handedness inventory questionnaire. The handedness distribution was: right-handed 90%, left-handed 1 %, and ambidextrous 9%. I found that 30 % had better visual acuity with their right eye, 39 % had better visual acuity with their left eye, and 31% had the same visual acuity with both eyes. 75.2% on average used their right eye in the battery of tests and 24.8% on average used their left eye. There were no statistically significant differences between the sexes or age groups with any of the measures. No correlation was found between eye preference and visual acuity or eye preference and hand preference among all subjects. No statistically significance between the sexes was found.

Outbreaks of human illness have been linked to visiting settings with animal contact throughout developed countries. These outbreaks demonstrate that although contact with animals in public settings can provide educational and entertainment opportunities, the potential to spread disease exists if risk-reduction tools are not implemented, proper hygiene measures aren’t practiced, and precautions are not taken and reinforced. This thesis is divided into two parts. Part one is an observational study of hand hygiene tool availability and recommendations; frequency of risky behavior; and, handwashing attempts by visitors in Kansas and Missouri, U.S., petting zoos. Part two delineates best practices for organizing events where human-animal interactions are encouraged, in hopes it will lower the risk of zoonotic disease transmission. Handwashing signs and hand hygiene stations were available at the exit of animal-contact areas in 10/13 and 8/13 petting zoos respectively. Risky behaviors were observed being performed at all petting zoos by at least one visitor. Frequently observed behaviors were: children (10/13 petting zoos) and adults (9/13 petting zoos) touching hands to face within animal-contact areas; animals licking children’s and adults’ hands (7/13 and 4/13 petting zoos, respectively); and children and adults drinking within animal-contact areas (5/13 petting zoos each). Of 574 visitors observed for hand hygiene when exiting animal-contact areas, 37% (n=214) of individuals attempted some type of hand hygiene, with male adults, female adults, and children attempting at similar rates (32%, 40%, and 37% respectively). Visitors performed hand hygiene more often when a staff member was present within or at the exit to the animal-contact area (136/231, 59%) than when no staff member was present (78/343, 23%; P < 0.001, OR = 4.863, 95% CI = 3.380–6.998), and in petting zoos where animal contact occurred over a fence (188/460, 40.9%) as opposed to visitors entering an animals’ yard for contact (26/114, 22.8%; P < 0.001, OR = 2.339, 95% CI = 1.454–3.763). Inconsistencies existed in tool availability, signage, and supervision of animal- contact. Risk communication was poor, with few petting zoos outlining risks associated with animal-contact, or providing recommendations for precautions to be taken to reduce these risks. Recommendations made in the second part of this thesis were based on these observations, recent publications, and the suggestions of many health agencies. It focuses on what event planners can do to design and plan a safer event, and what staff working at the event should be aware of in order to inform visitors and lower the risk of zoonotic disease transmission. Part two discusses two primary tools to reduce risk of zoonotic disease transmission: sanitation and awareness of risk behaviors. Keeping facilities, animals, and visitors clean, and informing visitors of risky behaviors to avoid, while reinforcing positive messages within the animal- contact area, can lower the risk of zoonotic infection. Included with the second part, is a checklist (see appendix A) designed for visitors to assess whether an event that encourages human-animal interaction poses a high or low risk. By identifying possible risk factors, teachers and parents will be able to make an informed decision about the safety of the human-animal encounter.

Abstract:
Background: Home care are a very common form of care and many prefer this form of care in front of hospitalized care. The home care service is therefore in need of a planning system in order to plan its work as efficiently as possible. Many of these implementations fail. Purpose: Many implementations in the home care service fail. The purpose of this paper is therefore to investigate what critical success factors project managers should focus on to achieve a successfull implementation. Method: This study has been conducted with a qualitative study as research method. A literature study was carried out by finding previous research in the field, which was then used as a theoretical framework. This was then compared with the empirical evidence acquired through semi-structured interviews with people with experience of implementations in the home care industry. Result: The result shows that the CSF’s that appeared in the literature study should also be used in practice. In addition, three new factors were identified Conclusion: All of the CSF’s presented in the literature study were reinforced by the interviews conducted with the informants in this study. References to how these should be used have also been developed. For example, the focus on the factor resources should primarily be put on the resource time. This study also concludes that depending on the type of organization it is about, such as small private companies, private medium-sized companies or municipal-owned businesses, focus should be on different CSF’s.

Dissertation looks into the various aspects of relations between Reinhart Koselleck`s history of concepts and Hans-Georg Gadamer´s philosophical hermeneutics. By proposing to interpret Koselleck´s work in the light of inquiries made by hermeneutics philosophy, we intend to comprehend and bring into question one form of historical knowledge that is based upon the dialogue and the link between past and present, with a view to opening up new horizons and prospects of future. Such purpose is well served by Koselleck`s historical studies, be it through their theoretical ties with the Heideggerian philosophy or their insertion into the political and social questions of his days, whereas they also make up a major discussion topic within our discipline. These authors` strong argument on the fundamentals of historical knowledge shows not only dissent, but a wide field of consent as well, which will both be approached here. Authors` ideas are of much interest just when historical science increasingly seems to state its purpose as an inquiry into historical otherness. The relation between history and philosophy may disclose interesting prospects for the discipline, which has greatly experienced the impact of anthropological trends in the latest decades.

Abstract:
This Master’s thesis focuses on the discursive power struggle between politicians and journalists on Finnish digital news articles where the politician’s tweets are embedded or quoted in using multimodal discourse analysis. Embedded and quoted tweets are one of the premier links between Twitter and digital news platforms but have for the most part been left out of the field of discourse analysis. This research will try to fill that gap, focusing on a time period of one month before the 2019 parliamentary election in Finland. The research material consists of 18 articles from two of the biggest digital news platforms in Finland, Iltalehti and Ilta-Sanomat. They are analyzed using Machin and Mayr’s seven-part scheme for critical discourse analysis, focusing on the embedded and quoted tweets in relation to the text’s discourse, and also the intertwined textual and the visual sides of the articles. The analysis shows that in most articles, the discourse portrayed in the tweets is not challenged by the journalist, meaning that the politicians most often come on top in the discursive power struggle. The analysis also displays that there are multiple ways of challenging the discourse, but they are seldom used in the power struggle. In conclusion, as the tweets’ discourses often go unchallenged, both the politicians and Twitter as a platform have arguably disproportionate power to influence both the discourse on digital news platforms, as well as the readers of those.

Ealy, Barbara Smith. "Parental Level of Satisfaction Regarding Early intervention Services for Children Who Are Deaf or Hard of Hearing." Thesis, Piedmont College, 2013. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=3600986.

Full text
Abstract:

This qualitative study explores the level of satisfaction of parents regarding early identification/intervention services for children who are deaf or hard of hearing (D/HH). The purpose of this study is to compare the progress of children who are D/HH with their hearing peers on elements used to measure the readiness of students to enter the first grade as measured by teacher and parental perception/satisfaction. This study will include a qualitative exploration of assistive strategies and parental choices regarding early-intervention services, amplification, and modes of communication. Furthermore, it will provide and analyze data concerning teacher and parent perception of the relative success of the various pre-school interventions for children with hearing losses.

The study employs a qualitative case-study methodology using an in-depth guided-interview format to collect data. Participants include four families of children who are deaf or hard of hearing. Triangulation of data sources is achieved through guided in-depth interviews with parents, document review, verbatim transcripts of all interviews, and personal observations. The findings reveal levels of functioning for children who are D/HH upon entry into the school system through the end of their kindergarten year and levels of parental satisfaction concerning their choices made about early-intervention services prior to their children's entry into the school system.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of a supplemental vocabulary intervention on the content area vocabulary word and definition knowledge of DHH student in grades K-2, the integrity with which itinerant teachers implemented the supplemental vocabulary intervention, and the effects and benefits of coaching to support treatment integrity. Mixed methods were employed; a single subject multiple baseline across subjects and content design was used to investigate student word and definition knowledge, while quantitative and qualitative methodologies were used to examine the effects of coaching on teachers' treatment integrity. The supplemental vocabulary intervention included explicit and implicit strategies and was designed to fit the context of itinerant teacher services. Various levels of support were employed to coach teachers as they gained familiarity with the intervention and improved their treatment integrity during implementation. Student word and definition knowledge was examined in relation to teacher treatment integrity to determine if teacher implementation had an effect on student outcomes. Results showed a functional relationship between the supplemental vocabulary intervention and student word and definition knowledge. Teachers' treatment integrity was found to have a greater effect on student definition knowledge than word knowledge. Teachers responded positively to the coaching they received, and their implementation improved over the course of the study. Practical and research implications for using supplemental vocabulary instruction with DHH students, as well as the need to provide support to teachers to improve treatment integrity, are discussed.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of parent training on shared reading practices in families of children with hearing loss. This intervention augmented a multifaceted school program in emergent literacy. In a community based format, parents were explicitly taught three shared reading strategies that have evidence to support the growth of language and vocabulary in children who are hearing and children with hearing loss. These strategies include open-ended questions, language expansions, and scaffolding. A multiple-baseline across content (strategies) design examined the relationship between the intervention and changes in parent behavior. Results indicated that the intervention was effective for increasing open-ended questioning, but there was no functional relationship between the intervention and the other two strategies, language expansions and scaffolding. Conclusions suggest replication to determine the effectiveness of this intervention for increasing open-ended questions. Additionally, further research is needed to determine the intensity and duration of training to influence effects on language expansions and scaffolding.
