Abstract:
Abstract: Among the interesting phenomena in Halmahera’s post conflict era are the permanently built tombs of victims in the courtyards of houses of worship (churches and mosques). An important question which arises from this phenomenon is: why were the tombs of victims built in the courtyards of the houses of worship? What is the meaning of this reality for promoting reconciliation and peace in Halmahera? According to the writer, an analysis on the way the Halmaherans comprehend this practice is important. By understanding the way the Halmahera people view and live out the meaning of the tombs of the victims, we can understand and anticipate any further impact of this practice. Through this article, the writer offers a sociological and theological study so that a road to promote peace building in Halmahera can be paved. Keywords: Tomb of victims, martyr, syuhada, conflict, violence, reconciliation, peace, Halmahera. Kata-kata kunci: Pusara korban, martir, syuhada, konflik, kekerasan, rekonsiliasi, perdamaian, Halmahera.

Abstract:
Halmahera is one main island in the northeast region of Wallacea. Having a uniquely environmental profile, Halmahera also serves as a home for a long cultural historical process of this region. Including for archaeological studies. Numbers of preliminary studies have been conducted to understand the dynamic of region’s culture in the past. Unfortunately, the quantity and the depth of these studies have not equivalent to the colossal potential of Halmahera’s culture history. This research is a part of the efforts to contribute in completing our knowledge on the dynamics of culture history in Halmahera. Focus of this research is to identify the archaeological potential in the geographic area of Central Halmahera. The opening of the large scale nickel mines in this region which is potentially threaten the preservation of the cultural heritage is the main consideration in chosing the research locus. Prelimenary survey has been adopted as an approach in this research. This study found that the region of Central Halmahera is a high potentially area for archaeological research according to the large coverage of the karst area in this region. Rescue and preservation action of sites in the mining area is absolutely necessary in order to maintaining the existence of all cultural heritage in the region.

Abstract:
Dote Village is located in Central Halmahera Regency with hilly morphology in the north and the coast bordering the Dote Sea (Halmahera Sea) in the south. The main transportation access in Dote Village is sea transportation. The condition of the Dote Sea waters which is busy with local transportation activities between villages requires updating data as basic information on the condition of the seabed depth (bathymetry). Seabed depth data can be obtained from bathymetric measurements and tidal analysis as a correction for bathymetric measurements. The morphological conditions of the seabed can provide information on the topographic characteristics of the seabed. Based on these conditions, the purpose of this research is to map the depth of the seabed (bathymetry) in the Dote Sea of Halmahera. The method used is direct measurement with echosunder. Then corrected with secondary data in the form of tidal condition data. Analysis of the data used is the value of the sea depth measured by echosounder compared to the mean sea level (MSL) (calculation of tides). Then mapping the morphology of the seabed using the slope method. The data used is the value of the depth of the sea (bathymetry) which is converted into the value of the slope with the analysis of the slope of the horton slope. Based on the measurement results, it is known that the bathymetry shows that the regional morphological conditions of the seabed slopes of the Halmahera Sea Dote are sloping. Abstract:
Abstract Phyllidiella pustulosa are brightly coloured gastropod molluscs frequently found in coral reefs of the tropical Indo-Pacific. Phyllidiella pustulosa is widely distributed in Indonesia, such as Seribu Island, North Sulawesi, West Papua, and Halmahera. Based on the genetic characteristics of an individual’s DNA sequence, differences between species can be identified. In this paper, we would like to provide the molecular analysis and phylogenetic relationship among nudibranchs from Indonesian waters. Identification was made by measuring the genetic distance between species. The phylogenetic tree reconstruction was made using the Kimura 2-parameter model with 1000 times bootstrap with neighbor-joining and maximum likelihood method. There is 46 DNA Sequence obtained from 4 different regions (Seribu Island, Halmahera, North Sulawesi, and West Papua). The genetic distance of West Papua and Halmahera has the smallest value among other populations, which is between 0.0051-1.4629, compared to the population in Halmahera. The phylogenetic tree also shows populations from West Papua and Halmahera are on the same lineage, indicating that the population in West Papua and Halmahera had the closest relation. The study suggested that North Sulawesi, Halmahera and West Papua have genetic mixing of the same region, which is distinctive from Seribu Island.

Abstract:
The languages spoken on northern Halmahera and surrounding small islands constitute a group of related ‘Papuan’ languages called North Halmahera. They are also, together with other Papuan and Austronesian languages, included in a proposed sprachbund which is called East Nusantara. Neuter gender and numeral classifiers have both been proposed to characterize the sprachbund. Consequently,an investigation of the noun categorisation systems in the North Halmahera languages, which is the subject of this study, can be of interest for the characterization of the sprachbund. The method for the investigation is to search for information about seven languages in existing grammatical descriptions, complemented with information which can be culled from published texts in the languages. There are mainly two categorisation systems in all the investigated languages: genders and numeral classifiers. The numerals often contain fossilized prefixes. Among the numeral classifiers, the human classifiers are special because of their origin from pronominal undergoer prefixes and the limitations of its use in some languages. Except in West Makian, there is a default classifier and a classifier for trees, and secondarily for houses, in all languages. A classifier for two-dimensional objects is also quite common. The other classifiers are used with a very limited number of nouns.

Full text
Abstract:
The Halmahera arc is a north-south linear intraoceanic arc cutting across the islands of Halmahera and Bacan in NE Indonesia. The arc is the result of the eastward subduction of the Molucca Sea Plate, accommodating the westward movement of the Pacific and Philippine Sea Plates (PSP) against the Eurasian margin. To the south of the Halmahera arc is a major left-lateral strike-slip fault system: the Sorong Fault Zone (SFZ), which separates the northward movement of Australia from the westward movement of the PSP. This plate boundary has been stable throughout the Neogene to the present day, and has been responsible for the transfer of continental fragments from the Australian margin into the southern Molucca Sea region. K/Ar dating has revealed the migration of volcanism along the length of the Halmahera arc from south to north. The oldest volcanics (ca. 11 Ma) are from Obi, the southernmost island in the region, where volcanism is now extinct. Moving north into Bacan, ages range from 7 Ma to the Quaternary, whereas in central Halmahera they range from 6-2 Ma. The present-day arc currently lies to the west of central Halmahera and stretches up the north-west arm of the island. On the basis of spatial, temporal and geochemical variations a possible seven Neogene volcanic centres can be distinguished along the length of the arc. Major element, trace element and Sr-Nd-Pb-O isotopic analyses reveal a wide diversity in geochemical characteristics between the centres. This is due to heterogeneity within the arc mantle wedge, the type of arc crust through which the volcanics were erupted and variations in contribution to the mantle wedge from a subducted component. Volcanic rocks from Obi, central Halmahera and north Bacan display geochemical characteristics typical of intraoceanic arc lavas. The lack of a continental component within these centres enables a greater understanding of the variety of processes and source components affecting arc magmatism in this region. Similarities in certain incompatible trace element characteristics between volcanic rocks of the Mariana and Halmahera arc suggest both arcs are products of a variably depleted mantle beneath the Philippine Sea Plate (PSP). Pb isotopic data from the Halmahera arc, combined with data from back-arc basaltic rocks from the PSP, suggests an I-MORB-type mantle wedge exists beneath this plate and hence that it was once part of the Indo- Australian plate. Volcanic rocks from west and south Bacan lie outside the isotopic ranges displayed by lavas from Obi, north Bacan and Halmahera, reaching extreme Sr-Nd-Pb isotopic ratios consistent with the assimilation of a continental component. Isotopic analyses of Permo-Triassic granitic material, found exposed in the Sula- Banggai islands, New Guinea margin, and Queensland, NE Australia, indicate that this is the most likely contaminant of volcanic rocks in the south Bacan region. In contrast, volcanic rocks from west Bacan are contaminated with a component similar in isotopic composition to highly metamorphosed rocks found exposed in the Sibela Mountains, south Bacan. The geochemical signature and age of the Halmahera arc lavas has implications for the arrival and movement of continental crust in the region. Combined with stratigraphic and tectonic knowledge of the region this study has been used to construct a possible model for the development of the Halmahera arc. The contaminated signature of the Bacan Neogene volcanic rocks supports the hypothesis of overthrusting of ophiolitic and continental material, derived from the PSP and Australian plates respectively, due to collision between the Australian continent and a PSP arc during the Early Miocene. This initiated the development of the Sorong Fault Zone, which was responsible for the recent movement of these 'terranes' into the southern Molucca Sea region.

Abstract:
The islands of Halmahera, Morotai, Bacan, Obi and Waigeo lie in a zone of complex tectonics at the junction between the Eurasian margin and the Philippine Sea and Australian plates. New age data from the region using Sm-Nd, Rb-Sr and K-Ar systems and geochemical data are presented and are integrated with existing geological, geochemical and isotopic data to produce a regional geochronological framework. Continental metamorphic rocks of probable Palaeozoic age, derived from New Guinea, are found on Bacan and Obi. Sm-Nd model ages indicate that metamorphic protoliths contained Precambrian cratonic material which was subsequently mixed with younger mantle-derived material. Rb-Sr and K-Ar systematics give Neogene ages which relate to exhumation and emplacement of these rocks by strike-slip processes in the Sorong fault system. Ophiolitic rocks from Halmahera, Obi and Gag are of Philippine Sea plate origin and are interpreted to have formed an intra-oceanic forearc-arc-backarc system of Jurassic age based on Sm-Nd, K-Ar dating and geochemical and stratigraphic evidence. Subsequent Cretaceous to Tertiary arc activity has largely disturbed K-Ar ages of ophiolitic rocks. Cretaceous calc-alkaline arc activity formed the Gowonli and related volcaniclastic formations on Obi and Waigeo. Unusual amphibole-rich cumulates, hornblende gabbros and ultramafic rocks occur adjacent to continental metamorphic rocks. These yield Cretaceous and younger isotopic ages and are interpreted as the roots of a calc-alkaline island arc subsequently disrupted and uplifted by faulting in the Early Cretaceous and Neogene. Diorites and trondjhemites intruded into ophiolitic rocks on Halmahera and Obi date two phases of arc-related plutonic activity in the Middle to Late Cretaceous. One Paleocene diorite has also been dated. Isotopic ages from amphibolites, derived from basic protoliths, and biostratigraphic ages from sedimentary fault-related breccia deposits indicate deformation of ophiolitic rocks in the Late Cretaceous. Ar-Ar plateau ages and reset K-Ar ages suggest another period of deformation in the Paleocene. Isotopic dating shows that Tertiary arc activity occurred in three phases: a brief, Middle Eocene phase of diorite and andesite formation in eastern Halmahera; a dominantly Oligocene period of arc activity related to subduction beneath the Philippine Sea plate and a Neogene phase related to subduction of the Molucca Sea plate. Oligocene arc activity was terminated by Early Miocene collision of the Philippine Sea plate with the northern Australian margin. Convergence of the Philippine Sea plate with the Eurasian margin led to Neogene arc activity above an eastward-dipping Molucca Sea plate slab. Isotopic dating indicates that Neogene arc volcanism migrated northwards over time. Pliocene compressional deformation in Halmahera and Bacan caused a westward shift of the arc to its present position and may be related to collision events within the Sorong Fault system

Abstract:
The dispersal services of frugivores affect plant community assembly, persistence, and gene flow in the short-term, and in the long-term are critical to ensuring that tropical trees and palms can regenerate in disturbed areas and can migrate amidst climate change. Halmahera is the largest Moluccan island within the Wallacea biodiversity hotspot, yet data on its plant and animal distributions and interactions are almost null. I studied the tropical trees and palms of Halmahera and their seed dispersal dynamics. Chapter I explores the palms of the Moluccan islands through field-, herbarium-, and literature- based studies. The results of herbarium specimen collections are presented within a preliminary list of palms for Halmahera’s Aketajawe-Lolobata National Park, and contextualized in a review of regional palm biogeography. Expanding beyond the study of one plant family, Chapter II compiles and examines all the tree and palm taxa of the Moluccan islands in order to infer seed dispersal syndromes for each taxon, resulting in an analysis of over 900 taxa. Zoochory was found in 93% of plant families, and nearly 30% of endemic taxa rely primarily on dispersal by large-bodied frugivores. The role of a hypothesized keystone disperser (the Papuan hornbill, Rhyticeros plicatus ruficollis) is confirmed experimentally to disperse about 10% of Halmahera’s tropical tree and palm taxa. The final chapter encompasses an ex-situ germination trial and a year-long in-situ experimental study that examines the germination and recruitment of three palm species post-ingestion by Papuan hornbills, in four different habitat types representative of Halmahera’s landscape. Palms dispersed by hornbills into disturbed habitats and primary forests resulted in enhanced recruitment, although results varied by habitat and species. Hornbills aid both in forest conservation and recovery/assembly after disturbance. The results of this dissertation provide a foundation for further ecological studies and for enhanced conservation of Halmahera island.

Abstract:
This thesis is an ethnographic account of the Buli, an Austronesian-speaking and predominantly Christian group numbering some 3,500 people who live on the central east coast of Halmahera in the northeastern comer of Indonesia. The study focuses on the Buli category of gua, a cannibal spirit that possesses particular people and forces them to attack and devour the liver of fellow villagers. Such attacks cause serious illness and often death. Taking the events that surrounded gua attacks and gua deaths as my point of departure, I attempt a semiotic and phenomenological analysis of the gua, its characteristics and its actions. I argue that the gua is a real social agent whose significance speaks to fundamental aspects of Buli ontology and whose presence is latent in most domains of Buli everyday life and world-view. I begin by analysing the symbolism of gua violence and propose that it is intimately related to Buli conceptions of the body and to the general corporeal construction of the world. This embodied conception of the world includes notions about how to secure the integrity of the human body and how to comport oneself properly, but also extends to rules of house and canoe construction as well as to ideas about space and topography. In all these areas, the gua constantly intervenes in a disconcerting fashion. Similarly, the actions of the gua, said to be motivated by envy, greed, aberrant hunger and lechery, are deeply entangled with Buli moral behaviour. This is especially clear in exchange behaviour which I divide into two related types: ceremonial exchange and everyday forms of food sharing. Exchange etiquette harbours an inherent tension, a tension of which the gua is the most cogent manifestation. I describe the other main spirit agents in Buli: the ancestors (smengit), the guardian spirits (suang) and the mythical hero Ian Toa. After analysing the myths and rituals associated with these spirit agents, I conclude that they, despite their strong moral opposition to the gua, each share significant features with it. None of these spirit agents nor the role they perform for Buli people can be understood without reference to the gua. The same ambivalent relationship with the gua also pertains to the Sultan of Tidore, once the political sovereign of central Halmahera. The Sultan is regarded as the bringer of customary law (adat) to Buli society and much of Buli cultural identity is tied up with their position vis-ä-vis Tidore and its place among the other three original kingdoms of the ‘Spice Islands’. The figure of the ruler of Tidore was central to the rebellions in which Buli was involved during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries and the Sultan is still today an important symbolic presence in Buli ceremonial life. The embodied moral conception of the world that I describe for Buli contrasts with the Christian theology which they, like most Halmaherans, have adopted from a succession of Dutch missionaries up to the Second World War. I trace the history of conversion in Halmahera and argue that millennial ideas as well as concerns about sickness and death were powerful motivations for conversion. I propose that concerns with the gua or the suanggi (as it is glossed in Malay) have played a significant, if subterranean role, in the acceptance of Christianity in Buli and Halmahera. The importance of the gua in contributing to the creation of Buli history is not only restricted to the past, it is also detectable in the present. Conflicts ensuing from gua attack are thus often at the heart of confrontations between Buli communities and representatives of the Indonesian nation-state. In addition to serving as a medium for describing Buli society and ontology, the gua, in other words, also provides a perspective on the engagement of Buli society with modernity and its multi-faceted relationship to the Indonesian state. The gua is not, therefore, an isolated phenomenon of belief and I eschew use of the term ‘witchcraft’ to describe it because of the universalism and reductionism that it often implies. Rather, the gua stands in a complicated relationship to the whole of Buli society. It is an ambiguous reflection of Buli experience and ontology that highlights the other, unsettling, side of all social and cultural processes, including exchange, personhood, sociality and group identity. It emphasises that feelings of unease and dread are as much part of cultural experience as are feelings of certainty and comfort.

Baker, Brett. "Indigenous-driven mission : reconstructing religious change in sixteenth-century Maluku." Phd thesis, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/1885/11292.

Abstract:
During the sixteenth century, tens of thousands of people in the region which the Europeans called Maluku embraced Christianity. Contemporary writers of both secular and mission chronicles celebrated this Christianisation as the work of Europeans, both colonial administrators and missionaries, who had won over the converts by persuasion, by godly attributes, and by military prowess. Though always focussed on European actors, these chroniclers also expected indigenous rulers to play a role in conversion. These kings and chiefs, once they had been persuaded by captains or missionaries to become Christians themselves, were understood to have the power to bring their subjects with them into the new faith in an effortless top-down process. Consequently, religious change was often reported as instances of passive and rather superficial 'mass conversion.' This representation of early Christianisation in Maluku has persisted in texts as divergent as reports written by seventeenth-century Dutch ministers, twentieth-century Catholic mission histories, and more recent works by secular scholars. During the past four decades, thousands of pages of contemporary letters and reports composed by colonial authorities, Portuguese merchants, and Jesuit missionaries have been published by the Portuguese Government and the Society of Jesus. Careful, critical reading of these primary source materials reveals that the Europe-centric view of conversion in sixteenth-century Maluku is mostly erroneous. In actuality, religious change in the region occurred as a consequence of an indigenous-driven mission effort. Interest in Christianity originated with indigenous people, not with Europeans, and not with missionaries once they arrived. Local individuals actively sought out opportunities to explore and embrace the new faith. They then aggressively attempted to draw Christian influence into their lands. Jesuit missionaries in Maluku served as appendages to the local mission effort, frequently told where they would labour and whom they would visit. In some instances, missionaries and other Europeans found themselves either held against their will or even traded like exotic goods. Although conversion to Christianity often generated strong opposition, it never occurred as the result of outside pressure. When faced with threats and intimidation from others, indigenous Christians stubbornly maintained the ability to act for themselves, in many cases prodding the Portuguese colonial apparatus to wield its power in support of Christian communities. Though religious change often appeared to be a mass movement, with villages or particular ethnic groups converting in totality, this was never the case. Conversion remained an individual act, resulting in a religiously diverse landscape. Despite persistent Portuguese expectations that mass conversion to Christianity in Maluku should occur as a consequence of the power of Christian rulers over their people, kings and chiefs who did convert lacked both the power and the will to impose a new faith on their subjects.

Abstract:
Eastern Indonesia, including the island of Halmahera, is a region with a high probability of identifying useful metal ores, particularly Ni-Co, Au-Cu, and Ag ores, which are potentially important to meet the growing needs of the global economy. As a part of geological prospection carried out by PT Halmahera Resources Perkasa Ltd. in cooperation with the Faculty of Geology of the University of Warsaw, 42 boreholes were drilled during the years 2009 – 2011 using an impact system (up to 15 m below surface) and 3 test pits constructed (up to 8 m below surface). Results of the analyses of rock samples from the license area showed the presence of a laterite deposit containing Ni-Co mineralization, with the resources estimated in category D 1 , with a cut of grade Ni ≥ 0,5% w , equalling 148283t Ni and 15007t Co, with the ore amounting to 14,8 million t and with an average content of 1,00% Ni and 0,13% Co. The ore in the deposit has mixed character. To-date studies have shown the dominance of oxide ore, but saprolite composed of magnesium silicates has also been identified in significant amount. Ni mineralization in oxide ore (limonite) is bound to goethite and manganese minerals, while in the case of silicate (saprolite) ore it occurs locally in the form of veins as well as zonally in the weathered serpentinites. Cobalt mineralisation is almost entirely related to the Mn minerals that occur in the lower oxide zone. Conducted research confirmed the assumed suprasubductional genesis of the ophiolite. It has been found that both serpentinite and harzburgite, (and possibly locally lherzolite), are the parent rock for the laterite deposit. Further geological research necessary for better investigation of the deposit has been proposed. It was found that the deposit can be exploited if there were more favourable prices of raw materials on the world markets and at least a partial restoration of favourable legal conditions for mining operations in Indonesia prior to the recent amendment of Indonesian mining law. Serious infrastructural difficulties characteristic for this part of the world may be an obstacle to the development of the deposit. The research conducted and presented within the framework of this PhD dissertation is the first such detailed research on the Ni-Co laterite deposits in Halmahera.

Abstract:
This chapter explores Maluku and North Maluku to dispel myths of religious pluralism. In 2016, the Ministry of Religion announced its recognition of the district of North Halmahera in North Maluku as an example of religious harmony due to the Tobelo adat practice of hibualamo allowed people to live in harmony, peace, and mutual respect. The aftermath of communal violence narratives is occasionally prefaced with clichéd statements about earlier periods of religious pluralism. The chapter expounds on interfaith relations and its concerns of peace, reconciliation, and conflict prevention in Maluku and North Maluku. Additionally, it highlights how religious pluralism is merely an ideal instead of a reality in the region.
