Abstract:
This paper puts the case that viewing text dynamically can be valuable in the practice of semantic description. Using, as its case study, the statistically significant occurrence of Subject ellipsis across consecutive clauses in a corpus of newspaper football reports, the paper demonstrates a systematic difference between the lexicogrammatical characteristics of clauses containing such patterned use of ellipsis and the clauses of their surrounding co-text. The lexicogrammatical features in question, which are analysed in detail in the paper, are: clause length in words, number of clause elements, amount of syntactic embedding, and patterns in Hallidayan transitivity process-types. Given the nature of these lexicogrammatical features, the argument is made that Subject ellipsis across consecutive clauses can iconically express an increase in pace – something only observable when the text is viewed dynamically.

Abstract The paper focuses on the institutional website as a complex genre with a relatively discontinuous inner structure, which is, however, coherent and cohesive, and unified by a common communication goal(s). The website is viewed as a discourse colony consisting of independent but related components realized in an array of subgenres, some of which are typical of the academic/institutional environment while others come from different discourse domains and are employed as embedded genres. The paper focuses on the blog as an embedded genre, its forms and functions within university websites, and particularly on its potentially multimodal character, i.e. the interplay of the verbal content of the blog and the non-verbal elements, esp. photographs, which co-create the producer’s message to the addressee. Drawing upon the recently developed field of multimodal discourse analysis within Hallidayan Systemic Functional Linguistics, particularly Martinec and Salway’s model, the paper explores the level to which the modes are integrated and the ways they contribute to meaningmaking in the genre.

Abstract:
To study the translation of public notice is in effect seeking insights which take us beyond translation itself towards the whole relationship between language activity and the social context in which the translation is intended to function. Social context is an important aspect in the study of language and translation because the three are inextricably linked. This paper attempts to investigate the text types, text functions and the translations of public notices functioning in the social context of Macao SAR of China. It tries to deduce about the contexts in which the ST and TT were produced, the purpose for which they were produced and the target reader for whom they were produced. The study is carried out in the light of Reiss’s theory of text typology (2000) and the Hallidayan systemic functional linguistics. It is hoped that this study will identity differences in public notice translation and explore the reasons behind the differences, and also be a test case for examining the role of functional theories of language in explaining some phenomena of translation. Texts for the analysis are extracted from the database for a research project undertaken by the present writer, and the analysis is conducted in terms of three text types and functions: informative, expressive and operative. The results of this study reveal that although one of the language functions might be dominant in a single text in a public notice, overlapping or combining functions are very often bestowed upon most texts. They also show that although invariance in the transfer of content could be achieved in the translation of informative texts, and an analogous form in the translation could be found in the transfer of an expressive text, there are more differences than similarities in the translation of texts with operative functions. Possible reasons behind the differences between the source and target texts are discussed. It is argued that the differences are most possibly caused by differences in cultural values, different religious backgrounds and different expectations between readers of the source and target texts.

Abstract:
Considered as the universal language, music has been historically a means of communication and personal expression about the inner and outer world of its creator, it is present in almost every social activity of human beings as in the habitual religious celebration of Christmas across the largely Catholic countries. Therefore, the present paper will provide a descriptive text analysis of ten traditional Latin American Christmas folk songs on the base of the transitivity system informed by the Hallidayan Systemic Functional Linguistics theory. To reach this goal, both a quantitative and qualitative research method approach was applied. Findings indicated that among the six analyzed transitivity process types, the material processes (32%) dominate the construal of the musical pieces, followed by the mental (23%), behavioral (18%), and relational realizations (13%) whereas the verbal and existential processes are relatively low all together representing an overall frequency of 14%. This reveals the singers’ attempt to represent the Christmas season as a nostalgic time leap, an immediate enjoyment, and a rewarding exchange.

In homage to the work of Uroš Mozetič, the paper takes as its starting point previously developed suggestions about how the language of “Eveline” conveys a picture of the heroine as a passive, paralysed character. Using Hallidayan Systemic Functional Linguistics as a model of stylistic analysis, it investigates the contribution of both the ideational and the interpersonal metafunctions to the meaning of the text. The results extend and amend some ideas from the literature, such as the supposed prevalence of stative verbs, and suggest that while the short story as a whole predominantly uses material processes, their potential for change is mitigated by Joyce’s aspect, tense, and usuality choices. Eveline as the main character crucially has the role of a Senser, observing and internally reacting to the world around her, and even the processes in which she acts upon things and people are modalised and shown to be either hypothetical or instigated by others.

Abstract:
This paper highlights a brief theoretical and methodological investigation of the most widespread specific features of Translation Studies touching the development of the discourse approach in adequate conveying of modality in translation. The category of modality is examined from the point of view of an interdisciplinary approach that combines results obtained in logic, and traditional linguistics. Modality, originating in the logical philosophical tradition, is one of the most important characteristics of the utterance. It reflects cognitive activity of a person, thus expressing the connections of the objective world. As a functional-semantic category, it contains a number of evaluative means characterizing the attitude of a statement to reality, its objective significance, and the means that characterize the attitude of a speaker to the statement, which reflects its subjective side. Further studies can help to fully attain substantial progress in the analysis of the multimodal systemic functional approach to investigating the variability of expressing the means of modality in translation which may be another step towards a fuller understanding of the nature of this still poorly investigated sphere of translation. This rather interdisciplinary analysis is anchored in Hallidayan systemic functional grammar where "a text is the product of ongoing selection in a very large network of systems – a system network". Thus, a text is analyzed from the point of view of creativity and expression of various modal meanings.

Abstract The ability to construe and to interpret cause–effect relations is critical to the task of knowledge building in science. It is essential to understanding investigative processes and to interpreting claims. However, in the discourses of science the linguistic construal of cause and effect can be far removed from that of its everyday, commonsense expression. Studies in systemic functional linguistics have found that scientific causality is often realized inside a clause rather than between clauses (Halliday, M. A. K. 1998. Things and relations. In J. R. Martin and R. Veel [eds.], Reading science: Critical and functional perspectives on discourses of science, 185–235. London & New York: Routledge). This paper aims to further understand the challenge of making meanings of scientific causality from a linguistic perspective. I analyze the language of biology in five research articles, which are students’ key reading texts in a core undergraduate biology course at a leading Australian university. I argue that a discourse semantic understanding of “cause inside the clause” is critical for revealing the diverse language resources for constructing scientific causality.

Abstract:
This paper examines the relationship between Michael Halliday’s Systemic Functional Linguistics and Critical Discourse Analysis. Special attention is payed to the relevance and application of Halliday’s concept of the (meta)functions of language (ideational, textual and interpersonal) as a methodological tool in CDA, for it potentially enables a socially and politically engaged language analysis devoid of ideologically motivated result interpretation by the researchers themselves. Since the very beginning of both SFL and CDA, these two fields have intertwined for various reasons, or characteristics they have in common. The three characteristics deemed most important in literature are: functional orientation, perspective that language mirrors social reality and is, in turn, shaped by it, and the stance that the ideological motivation of text and speech can be proven and identified through grammar, i.e. linguistic representation analysed within its context (Hart, 2014).

Abstract:
Genre constitutes the rhetorical features of a text and the semiotic communicative purpose(s) it serves. It has marveled Systemic Functional Linguistics’ (SFL) scholars as to whether it should be treated as an aspect of the situational context (register) or as a distinct cultural semiotic system that correlates with texture- i.e. the three register categories of field, tenor, and mode. This paper aims to review the conceptualization of genre in the Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) tradition. Whereas Halliday associates genre with mode, Martin coordinates the three register variables of field, tenor, and mode in relation to social purpose. The elements of a schematic structure are generated by genre networks, which in turn preselect particular values of field, tenor and mode in a given culture. Both Halliday's context of situation and Martin’s context of culture levels are dynamic connotative semiotic systems through which new meanings are created by the three processes of semogenesis. Genre is conceived as a distinct cultural semiotic system, rather than an aspect of ‘mode’, that correlates with texture. Martin later avoided the intertextual glosses context of culture and context of situation since Halliday used them for instantiation, and not supervenience. The three register variables of language organize information at the level of genre into coherent texts. Modelled as register and genre, the stratified model of context configures meanings not only through discourse semantics, lexicogrammar, and phonology but also through the prosodic phases of evaluation. Halliday calls this model appliable linguistics since it enables us to develop a powerful model of language that is both “theoretical” and “applied” (Mahboob & Knight, 2010).

Jokes have increasingly become the medium through which people in different Arab countries express their concerns. Social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter are full of jokes tackling various spheres of life. Those jokes serve as a secure resort for people to raise issues they may not be able to express openly. The present study deals with the complications involved in the translation of Arabic jokes in general, and political jokes in particular into English. It sheds some light on the extent to which the translations of those jokes retain the force of their originals. The corpus of this study consists of 100 jokes that have been collected from different websites. The theoretical framework is eclectic, as it considers theories of translation and linguistics. It is based on Hans Vermeer's skopos theory (Nord, 1997; Reiss and Vermeer, 2014; Vermeer, 1989), and Halliday's theory of Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) (Halliday, 1985/1994). This study concludes that understanding a joke and then reproducing and translating it depends on a combination of linguistic and extralinguistic factors. The joke tellers may embrace various ideologies, and translators are required to be familiar with those ideologies to render the text adequately. The fidelity of translation will never be preserved unless all those aspects are taken into consideration.

Text analysis constitutes one of the most challenging and complex practices for every student. Owing to this fact, linguists need a theoretical framework that would explain every linguistic device in text cohesion. Those cohesive devices may identify those units that are part of the analysed text. Among the huge amount of literary works that might be analysed, we chose one by Stephen King, one of the most prolific thriller writers of the 20th century. The aim of this study is to analyse one of his bestsellers in American Literature, The Mist, a psychological horror novella published in 1980. The main work used in this research is Hasan and Halliday’s Cohesion in English, which will be the centre of the linguistic study. Thanks to this investigation, we shall establish certain linguistic parameters to help students build a linguistic analysis to ease their academic and professional areas, such as linguistics and translation. The excerpt analysed will include certain linguistic cohesive devices, such as anaphora-cataphora, the use of direct speech, relative clauses, or Hasan and Halliday’s terms of field, tenor, and mode, among others. As a result of this, EFL students from different disciplines, such as foreign languages, translation, or linguistic studies, will therefore increase their knowledge of this literary model in order to be applied to other literary and non-literary works.

Abstract:
This research was aimed to reveal and explain the violations conducted by Google to its user privacy which is implied through its Privacy Policy Agreement statement by analyzing it with Theme and Rheme proposed by Halliday. This qualitative research was done by applying the documentation recording method in collecting data and the Halliday’s Systemic Functional Linguistics as the basic theory. The result of the data was presented in the table analysis and in the form of descriptive interpretation. The result showed that Google build its clauses with the 4 types of theme construction. From the analyzed clauses, the dominantly built clause is the single constituent with marked theme where “We” is the mostly occurred subject. Yet, Google applied unmarked theme mosty in their clauses. With this dominant occurences of “We”, Google construe its existence as the authority holders of the w hole agreement. The researchers found that similar finite predicator appeared repeatedly such “collect” and “use” in building its clauses. These constitute Google’s strategy in order to force the user’s permission to let Google freely access their privacy. In addition, the operation of the conjunction “and”, extention, expansion and exemplificatory constituents represent the plentiful request of Google related to its user’s information. Those summarized the violation conducted by Google to its user’s privacy.

Edited text of Serat Centhini Tambangraras Amongraga is a text that contains the teachings of Javanese culture. The teachings in it are also addressed to Javanese women. This study describes linguistic forms that contain gender bias regarding Javenese women in edited text of Serat Centhini Tambangraras Amongraga. Data are words, phrases, and clauses collected from edited text of Serat Centhini Tambangraras Amongranga part II and V. The analysis was carried out with a qualitative descriptive method using three steps of data analysis, namely data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing/verivication. The theory used is Halliday’s Sistemic Functional Linguistic, as textual, conceptual, and interpersonal metafunction. The results of this study found that the use of lexicals are categorized as adjectives, representing women’s subordinate position, the use of verbs that place women as the target function, and the use modality, as modulated-obligation to oblige women to have citeria that men want. Teks suntingan Serat Centhini Tambangraras Amongraga adalah teks yang memuat ajaran kebudayaan Jawa. Ajaran di dalamnya juga ditujukan kepada perempuan Jawa. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan bentuk-bentuk kebahasaan yang mengandung bias gender dalam teks suntingan Serat Centhini Tambangraras Amongraga. Data yang dianalisis dalam penelitian ini merupakan data kebahasaan berupa kata, frasa, dan klausa yang dikumpulkan dari teks suntingan Serat Centhini Tambangraras Amongranga jilid II dan V. Analisis dilakukan dengan metode deskriptif kualitatif menggunakan tiga langkah analisis data, yaitu reduksi data, penyajian data, dan penarikan kesimpulan/verifikasi data. Teori yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah Linguistik Sistemik Fungsional yang digagas Halliday, yaitu metafungsi tekstual, ideasional, dan interpersonal. Hasil dari penelitian ini, ditemukan penggunaan leksikal berkategori adjektiva yang merepresentasikan bahwa posisi perempuan tersubordinasi, ditemukan penggunaan verba yang menempatkan perempuan sebagai fungsi Sasaran, dan penggunaan penekanan pada modalitas, yaitu modulasi obligasi untuk mewajibkan perempuan memenuhi kriteria-kriteria perempuan idaman laki-laki.

Critical discourse analysis (CDA) is a form of reflective inspection of how discourses shape and influence us. It has been applied widely especially in political discourses which analyzes the potential characteristics of language and the social and cultural background generated in the text, committed to exposing the complex relationship between language, power and ideology with the aid of critical thinking. Generally, the theoretical framework of CDA is based on Halliday’s systemic functional linguistics. Halliday believes that language has three metafunctions, namely ideational function, interpersonal function and textual function. These three achievements meet the needs of language users in three aspects including the description of the experience of objective world, the construction of social relations and the organization of discourse. As an important theory in systemic functional grammar, transitive system embodies the ideational function of language, which expresses people’s real world experiences and the inner world in several processes. In addition, this kind of theory is based on the semantic configuration of Actor+Process. Therefore, this paper will make a critical discourse analysis of Donald Trump’s inauguration speech in 2017 from the aspect of linguistic transitive system. Applying pragmatic translation equivalence (House, 2015) and Systemic Functional Linguistics (Halliday and Matthiessen, 2014), it focuses on how material clause in Indonesian meditation text is rendered into English. The research finding shows that to achieve translation equivalence, Indonesian material clause is re-contextualized by rendering it into relational clause of attributive, relational clause of identification and material clause using different type of process. The re-contextualization results in shift of dematerialization and shift from one type of material clause into another type of material clause.

This article investigates the application of Halliday’s theory of transitivity to analyse the verbal structures of an abridged text in the form of a graphic novel. Having been condensed from the original classic Journey to the Centre of the Earth (JttCotE) by Jules Verne, the present study examines the link between these structures and how they represent the original text. The focus of the analysis concentrates on the verbal text contained in speech bubbles and caption boxes; common characteristics of the comics medium. Based on the Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) framework of the ideational metafunction, this article discusses how linguistic formations are constructed and construed through transitivity in an abridged text. In addition, the analysis also looks into how the authors have adapted the original text into a graphic novel through the adoption of a few specific Processes. As such an exploration is limited, the current study fills the gap in this area. The analysis of data indicates that careful employment of linguistic choices forms the core of the novel which inherently is also supported through its visual representations. The results reveal that Material Processes are the most prominent in this adapted version of the novel, followed by Relational and Behavioural Processes respectively. This study highlights how linguistic choices support the original text, though an abridged version, specifically in the panels of Journey to the Centre of the Earth. The findings can serve to understand how authors construct their versions of abridged texts to adhere to the original text.

A text modality system is a set of views, judgments, and opinions about linguistic phenomena. The theory used in this research is Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL), which M.A.K Halliday initiated. This study's problem was to analyze the types and values of the modalities in the debate related to multicultural perspective. The data used in this study were 183 clauses and were analyzed qualitatively by using Functional Systemic Linguistic theory. Based on the results obtained through data analysis, Joko Widodo (Jokowi) nominated a probability modalization that shows the clause function as an exchange of information to express the speaker's attitude towards what he stated. Meanwhile, 80 types of modalities were found in Prabowo Subianto. They were nominated with the necessary modalities, which indicated that personal opinions or considerations were mandatory for the goods and services offered or requested.

In translation courses, students are asked to practice translation skills by translating a source text (ST) in a specific field. While teachers usually select texts based on topic and language accuracy, some such texts do not provide rich textual features that help students practice and improve their translation skills. This study aimed to analyze the cohesive features in business texts collected from “Investopedia” to investigate their suitability for use as STs to practice translation skills in the field of finance and administration. It was framed by Halliday’s (1978) systemic functional linguistics (SFL) approach to language and Halliday and Hassan’s (1976) cohesion analysis scheme. The findings demonstrated that the most prominent type used was lexical cohesion, followed by reference and conjunctions. Ellipses and substitution were rarely used. The findings indicated that the intensive use of lexical cohesion and the various subcategories used in these texts can help enrich the background knowledge of financial terminology and provide a communicative understanding of the ST while practicing various elements of textual features. The study provided a demonstration of the significance of SFL in providing coherent and cohesive STs that facilitate the needs of translation instructors and students in the field of finance and administration. Other SFL tools can be employed to provide a better understanding of these texts.

The theoretical background relies on the principles of functional-cognitive linguistics, relative to how discourse impacts linguistic choices ( HALLIDAY 1985 CHAFE 1995 ). The corpus of this research consisted of a series of exercises that were administered to undergraduate students, English majors. The findings shed light to the fact that learners are still unaware of most processes involving grammar arrangements and the discourse flow, as they are not also very conscious of how grammar can impact the communicative intent of a written text.

A. K. Halliday. The account of the translation process is placed within the compass of systemic functional linguistics. It is clear from my account that in translating An Introduction to Functional Grammar, Second Edition, the translator may experience many daunting problems, among which the problems of translating technical terms and long and heavily loaded nominal groups seem to be the toughest. It is also clear from my account that systemic functional linguistics is highly relevant to translation theory and translation practice. It can stand to benefit the translator from analysis of the source text, to discussion of translation problems, to explanation for establishment of points of equivalence between the choices in the target text and those in the source text, and to synthesis of the target text.

This paper examines Ganjar Pranowo’s political identity through his linguistic features constructed through his speech for responding the case of some of Ungaran citizen’s refusal on accepting a Covid-19 patient’s remain body. The speech is analyzed with Fairclough’s CDA as the main framework of analysis. There are three dialectical stages to complete his framework, namely the text analysis, the interpretation of text analysis, and the explanation. The textual part of the analysis will be explained by using Halliday’s systemic functional linguistics. Meanwhile, the interpretation part will be examined by using Halliday’s appraisal system, and van Dijk’s political discourse analysis will analyze the explanation part. This article states that the interpretation analysis are both ‘judgement’ and ‘appreciation’ from Ganjar shows some degrees of positive polarity and other degrees of opposing polarity. The Ganjar’s political identity represented from his response-speech is humanitarian-oriented, socio-religiously aware, status quo holder, and as a part of the bigger political system’s discourse maker. In this case, response-speech could be selected and in line with the context of society need. Therefore, this article suggests that disaster management should not differentiate community identity on the one hand. The elite also could deliver the policies in a soft statement that is accepted by the public on the other hand.

In this paper I interpret findings from a project investigating media coverage of the 2003 “Coalition” invasion of Iraq, drawing on a corpus of news reports from the Australian Broadcasting Corporation TV news. The findings reported are evidence of a consistency that reflects the unconscious working of an ideology about “war”, with ideology considered in linguistic terms as a “configurative rapport” (Whorf 1956). To trace some dimensions of this ideology, I explore the meanings of “war”, its linguistic reactances, and its consequences for the creation of text with respect to registers of news discourse. I consider “war” from the point of view of lexis: its referential meaning, its relation to other related signs, (Saussure 1974), its denotative and connotative meanings (Hasan 2003) and its collocation and colligational potentials (Firth 1937[1964], 1962). I then consider it from the point of view of text-in-context (e.g. Halliday & Hasan 1985). The paper extends the 30 year interest in the relations of language, mind and society that have characterised studies of ideology in critical linguistics/CDA.

The Soldier is a sonnet written in 1914 by Rupert Brook, a British war poet. The paper aims at analyzing the poem by applying M.A.K. Halliday’s Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) as a theoretical framework. The study mainly adopts a qualitative methodology to analyze the text by text linguistics. However, the quantitative methodology is also used to calculate the proportions of each metafunctional process in this poem. The main findings of this paper are: 1) Topic theme: the themes of the poem are I, dust, England, this heart, et., which show the soldie'’s love and gratefulness for England; 2) The focus of tense: The Soldier starts with a conditional clause and then uses present and past tense to create a context as if he was depicting a real external world instead of an imagination from the inner world. 3) Patterning and re-patterning: The patterning analysis shows the soldier in the poem emphasizes his motivation for sacrificing and spreading the precious things in England who had brought him up. The paper concludes that The Soldier shows a strong sense of patriotism, which might be an approval for the former literary studies of this poem from linguistic aspects.

Abstract Contemporary Christian songs (CCSs) are gaining more favor in Chinese churches than traditional hymns (THs) nowadays; however, many scholars have criticized the intimate relationship established with God in CCSs from the perspective of theology. This study aims to explore whether the God-human relationship built in THs and CCSs has experienced a change by carrying out a comparative analysis of their respective constructed interpersonal meanings. Combining Halliday’s framework with judgment in Martin and White’s Appraisal system, this study compares 100 CCSs and THs from the aspects of modality, judgment, mood and projected roles with the help of UAM Corpus Tool 3.0., with some changes of the original categories of judgment system due to the specific nature of the judged subject in the data. The semantic analyses show that the God-human relationship constructed in hymns has changed, with the encompassing view of God narrowed to one focused on love, the sinful nature of humans replaced by their incapability, and the assurance in and reverence to God outweighed by closeness and intimacy with Him. Some cultural realities and the situation of the church are referred to as a way of explaining this change.

The data are the text in every flash card in the “Speak It Up!” board game. The results of the study are, first, the declarative sentence was dominantly found in the study. Second, the results showed that the simple sentence was dominantly found. That means the language in every flash card is appropriate for children because the language is easy to understand.

This study aims to analyze the MOOD system, clause structures, as well as the polarity and modality of the Old Javanese language in an Asta Kosali Text (AKT). The data in this study were taken from the Asta Kosali text stored at the Cultural Office of Bali Province. The theory employed in this study is the theory of functional systemic linguistics, especially in the sub-theory of clause as an exchange of meaning, put forward by Halliday, Halliday and Matthiessen. The results of the study showed that the types of MOOD used in the AKT were the indicative-declarative and the imperative ones. In the indicative-declarative clause structure, the elements that must be present are Subj^Finite, or Subj^Polar/Predicator, while in the imperative clause structure, the element that must be present is the Predicator. The polarity of the Old Javanese language in AKT can be identified by affixing the words tan, nora, and haywa.

Starting from the assumption that “if corpora are to play a role in the translation professions of tomorrow, it is important that they impact on the education of the students of today” (Bernardini & Castagnoli, 2008, p. 40), this study endeavours to show how translation corpora of parallel texts (in English and in Italian) can be used in a Specialised Translation Master’s degree classroom. The point of departure is to examine parallel or aligned texts (originals and their translations) taken from the various European Union websites available for citizens to read and consult. The corpora currently being gathered include a variety of text typologies ranging from legal documents (such as regulations or directives), to administrative documents (such as White and Green papers) or informative texts (such as leaflets, brochures or web texts) (Felici, 2010, p. 101), all of them dealing with migration and asylum issues. The various types of documents are analysed quantitatively and qualitatively in class according to the following three main methodologies: Corpus Linguistics (Stubbs, 1996), Genre Analysis (Swales, 1990; Bhatia, 1993) and Systemic Functional Linguistics (Halliday, 1985; Halliday & Matthiessen, 2004). Classroom experiences in the past few years have shown that building ad hoc corpora (or do-it-yourself corpora as coined by Krüger, 2012, p. 514) for classroom consumption is a valuable and precious learning tool which enables students to hone their practical skills in the resource gathering process and consequently in the translation process itself. This study focuses on an EU regulation and shows how a lesson in class can be conducted with students at Cagliari University, Italy. The aim is to get students to work on the quantitative aspects along with the more qualitative linguistic elements of the ST (Source Text) in order to obtain greater awareness and understanding of professional translator strategies used by the professionals in the translation agencies of European Union institutions. From an educational and academic point of view, the linguistic and contrastive analysis of certain features of the ST along with the investigation of specialised terminology associated with contexts of migration and asylum and their equivalents in the TT (Target Text), have so far provided the Master’s students at Cagliari University with useful insights and sound knowledge of the linguistic characteristics of legal and institutional discourse in both English and Italian.

Mẻn Brayut text is one of Balinese texts develops in Balinese communities. The text is represented in spoken and written text held by Balinese communities. Even more, the text is supported with the statue of Mẻn Brayut found in number of temples in Bali. However, the message conveyed through the text has not been understood yet by most Balinese people. This phenomenon makes the text be interpreted differently. This is because the text has social semiotic conveyed through nonverbal language. Therefore, this research focused on social context embedded in the text of Mẻn Brayut to solve the differences interpretation. The theory used to explore used to analyze the problems is Systemic Functional Linguistics proposed by Halliday. The data were taken from written text (Suwija, 2019). The research used qualitative method since the theory is used as guidance of data collection. The data were collected based on field, tenor, and mode. The result of the result showed that the text described seriousness and sincerity of mother develops the children without having profit orientation, but she emphasizes in profound love. More abstractly, text of Mẻn Brayut represented in statue accompanied by many children placed in number of temples in Bali is interpreted as the propound God’s love for all human.

In cartoons, meanings and messages are generated either through two semiotic modes that are verbal and visual or solely through visual modes. Interaction between language and cartoon images is often regarded as a straightforward and easy-to-process way to convey a message. This study aims to show that the meaning and cartoon messages are not always easy to understand, therefore readers should observe the language and visual information of each cartoon. This study is aimed at identifying the linguistic modes and the visual modes in the cartoons to convey the meaning and the explicit message or implied message. For this purpose, two theories are adopted; Systemic Functional Linguistics Theory by Halliday (1994) to analyze linguistic modes and multimodal approach by Kress and Van Leeuwen (1996, 2006) to analyze visual modes or images in cartoons. The research data was obtained from Usik-Usik cartoon book (Cynical Collection of the World of Education). The findings indicate that language text is a linguistic modes that acts as an effective multimodal element and complement the visual modes in the cartoon work. Furthermore, the findings of the study also show that the role of linguistic modes is to provide the context in the cartoon work as additional information so that the reader can understand the messages to be communicated more clearly.

The theory used to analyze the text is the theory of social context from Systemic Functional linguistics, namely: context of situation, context of culture, and ideology (Halliday and Ruqaiya, 1999). The data source was taken from Kumpulan Satua ‘Balinese folklore’ written by Suwija, et.al (2019). This is qualitative research by applying library technique. The technique to collect the data was field, tenor, and mode, namely: what word was conceptualized, what action was actualized, who spoke, to whom spoke, how to speak, and others. The data are presented in two languages, Balinese language is used as the source language, and the English is used as the translation. The result of the research suggested that it is very important to comprehend social phenomenon based on social context. Without understanding the social context, it will destruct not only for the actor, but it is also for others. Be good person in front of the children is must since our behavior will be imitated and kept permanently in the mind by the children.

He is Chair Professor of the Department of English at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, where he pursues a scholarly agenda that includes developing the theory of Systemic Functional Linguistics and applying it to text and discourse analysis, functional grammar, issues related to language evolution and typology, and comprehensive descriptive models of register. Throughout his career, Matthiessen has made major contributions to SFL theories and methods. Among his major works is Lexicogrammatical Cartography: English Systems (1995, International Language Sciences Publishers). More than any other scholar, Matthiessen has expounded on Halliday’s early ideas on register and applied SFL theory to describing models of register variation. He remains an active researcher in the area of register studies which includes his registerial cartography – the comprehensive and systematic description of the registers in a language. The data were obtained from Satua Bali I Crucuk Kuning written by Tinggen (2011). The data were analyzed from both syntactic and semantic aspects and then described descriptively. The result of the research suggests that I Kasuna is has good character and never complain to do any given job. Meanwhile, I Bawang has bad character by slandering and underestimating I Kasuna. The text persuade us to do good behavior by filling promise which is made to others.

The result of this research shows that the types of processes found in this research almost covers all the types of processes, namely: Material, Mental, verbal, and Relational Processes. Behavioural and existential were not found under the assumption that those types have little relevant to the process of metaphorical wording.

Albeit its deviant and dream-like nature, literature holds its humanitarian messages by and through its sign vehicle, i.e., language. This study purports to investigate the expressive and impressive powers that represent the purposive image of reality, more specifically the clause processes that are dominant in Oscar Wild's The Selfish Giant. Special attention is paid to the figures of style which portray the landscape of the fairy tale. The narrative text is described, analyzed, and interpreted in terms of Halliday's Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) as a theoretical framework to detect the predominant clause processes in the body of the narrative structure. The study proceeds with the hypothesis that a fairy tale is not merely a sequence of interrelated linguistic options; it is humanity pained and encoded into a creatively imaginative piece of art. The paper concludes that the stylistic analysis has shown the frequent co-occurrences of the Material and Mental clause processes, whereas bodily actions are not without the patterns of cognition and perception. Then, Relational clause processes are less used in The Selfish Giant. Still, the clause processes are not the only stylistic aspects of The Selfish Giant. All the reciprocal interactions in the linguistic structures lead to the production of meaning proper, the ultimate aim of the stylistic exploration.

Abstract:
Examining the language of a literary text can be a reliable way of comprehending literary writers’ experiences. This paper explores the relationship between linguistic forms and socially construed meaning in Atukwei Okai’s poem, “The Oath of the Fontomfrom”. The objectives of the study were to (1) examine the poet’s process choices and their typical distribution in the text, (2) assess the participant characteristics of each process category, and (3) establish the role of the speaker/persona in the poem. This descriptive qualitative study was underpinned by the transitivity framework of Halliday and Matthiessen’s (2014) Systemic Functional Linguistics. So, a content analysis tool was used in analysing the text by revealing how meaning is presented. The results revealed that the poet (or persona) used different kinds of processes to present meaning to his reader.Consequently, when these processes were analysed, the results indicated that material processes were most frequently used. The distribution of process types includes 42% material, 16% mental, 15% behavioural, 13% relational, and 10% verbal processes. Again, the persona is involved in 32 processes, constituting 35% of the total processes. The preponderance of material processes revealed that the poet portrayed warfare as mainly involving concrete physical actions.

This article reports on a corpus-based exploration of the role that fictional dialogue plays in characterisation. The focus is on the two main characters of Austen’s Sense and Sensibility and (a) the extent to which certain features of their dialogue can be said to tie in with general perceptions that Elinor represents the “sense” and Marianne the “sensibility” of the novel’s title; and (b) the extent to which Austen can be said to have exploited these features to enable the sisters to speak with subtly differing voices. The features themselves were drawn from two linguistic frameworks, namely cohesion in text linguistics (specifically, the category of conjunctive cohesion as originated by Halliday and Hasan (1976)), and the category of “involvement” in register analysis (most prominently, Biber 1988). The density of these features in each dialogue was calculated, compared statistically and salient differences considered in relation to the focal issues of the study. Although two of the five hypotheses formulated were not supported, the results overall provided strong indications that Austen successfully distinguishes between the sisters through their dialogue, and often in ways that link with less subtle, more explicit cues to their character that are given in the text. The study thus reveals how certain text-linguistic and register features can underpin characterisation in fiction, and in so doing explicates aspects of what it is that readers and literary critics respond to when they comment on characterisation in a novel.

This paper argues for a pragmatically based reconsideration of cohesion-based approaches to information retrieval during comprehension, suggesting that a Relevance-based approach is preferable on both descriptive and explanatory grounds. It outlines a number of descriptive and explanatory problems dating back to Halliday and Hasan’s (1976, 1985; Hasan 1984) early view of cohesion, which seem to call for pragmatic solutions, and argues that interpretively used and echoic utterances raise serious questions as to the text-constitutive potential of cohesion. It goes on to discuss a number of cases that seem to pose problems for purely cohesion-based approaches but are straightforwardly explained by the Relevance-Theoretic account.

Pan Balang Tamak text is one of Balinese narrative texts developing in Balinese communities. This text contains very deep moral value that is very useful for communities to achieve happiness in the world. The moral values embed in the clauses constructing the text in metaphorical meaning. Many clauses constructing the text contain verbal group complexes in which describe kinds of actions done by the participants. This paper analyzes the application of verbal group complexes in Pan Balang Tamak text written by Suptra (2014). The theory used to analyze the verbal group complexes is the theory of group complex from Systemic Functional Linguistics from Halliday (2014). The paper used qualitative research, namely by the theory approach, the technique used is based on syntagmatic and paradigmatic based on field, tenor, mode. The result of the research suggested that both verbal group complexes in paratactic and in hypotactic were found in the text. Paratactic can be found in the way of the communities respect their bad behavior and the real condition happening to all animal living in the forest. The hypotactic were found the clauses which contain the effort to trap Pan Balang Tamak and the advantages obtained by Pan Balang Tamak from the efforts which be trap Pan Balang Tamak. Abstract This article digs into Adichie’s world view of the post-colonial Nigeria via her use of the English language in two extracts culled from her Purple Hibiscus. To go into details, the study examines how Adichie makes use of particular types of transitivity patterns to weave into her text her thematic construction of Nigeria after independence. To this end, the Experiential Meaning has been used as a theoretical lens given that the exploration of the transitivity properties in/of a text can provide a full insight into how the writer encodes his/her experience of the world therein as advocated by Systemic Functional Linguistics scholars like Halliday (1971/1976), and his followers Hassan (1985/1989), Eggins (2004), and Matthiessen (2004/2006). As a matter of fact, the study offers a linguistic analysis of the selected extracts, a summary of the findings, and the ensuing interpretation. Actually, the interpretation of the findings has revealed that Adichie has encoded tremendous meanings through her outstanding use of such process types as material, mental and verbal processes. The distribution of these key processes in the analyzed extracts per participant has also highlighted both some of the author's key characters and to what extent these latter ones embody her perceptions of the social, religious and political issues that she artistically tries to castigate in her novel under examination. The study ultimately opens up to further explorations embracing such other fields of the Systemic Functional Linguistics as the interpersonal and textual meanings.

Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) is a theory which analyses the language function to understand the meanings and purposes of language in written text or speech. In this research, SFL is employed to discover the interpersonal meanings on Jacinda Ardern’s speeches on COVID-19, seen from the modality since it is one of the most important elements in SFL which shows the speaker’s attitudes. This research uses Jacinda Ardern’s speeches on 20 April 2020 and 15 July 2020. Halliday’s modal category is used as the theoretical framework; thus, the interpretation will derive from his theory. This research also employs discourse analysis as the approach in order to understand the relation between language elements and social context in meaning-making. This study had different implementation of modal category from what Halliday had proposed which is triggered by the social situation during pandemic in New Zealand. This research discovers that the first speech only uses two types of modality which are probability and obligation, meanwhile the second speech uses all types of modality. The difference between the first and the second speech is due to the different circumstances. However, in general, the interpersonal meanings represented from the modality in the speeches are the commitment, empathy, dan quick respond of the speaker. The goal of this study is to identify the different forms of transitivity processes in the tourism text "Welcome to Sydney," as well as the most common types of the process employed in the text. This study is carried out by utilizing a quantitative descriptive method and a content analysis approach. The data was collected from a tourism text with the title "Welcome to Sydney," which is located on the internet. Halliday and Matthiessen developed the theory that was applied in this study. Based on the analysis, the "Welcome to Sydney" text contains 0 (0%) clauses that indicated material process, 2 (11,76%) clauses that indicated mental process, 3 (17,77%) clauses that indicated verbal process, 8 (47,56%) clauses that indicated relational process, 0 (0%) clauses that indicated behavioral process, and 4 (23,53%) clauses that indicated existential process. As a result, it assumed that the dominating types of processes discovered in this text were relational processes. According to this study, the "Welcome to Sydney" text tries to utilize the relational process to describe and inform readers about Sydney.

This paper deals with Field Variable and Experiential Meaning in Flora Nwapa’s One Is Enough. The theory that underpins this study is systemic functional linguistics, which is one of the approaches proposed by scholars such as linguists M.A.K Halliday, S. Eggins, J. R. Martin, R. Fowler, J. D. Benson to mention but a very few, for the study of language and its function(s). In this system, the study of language involves three functional labels: experiential, interpersonal and textual meanings. The study of these different functional labels helps to have a deeper understanding of a text. This study aims at describing and analysing linguistic features which connote experiential meaning in One Is Enough so as to uncover the deep messages conveyed through the novel and provide a new interpretation of it. Both quantitative and qualitative methods have been used in this study. Thus, two extracts have been selected from One Is Enough and systemic functional linguistic theories have been applied to each of them. The linguistic description and analysis of One Is Enough has revealed that women are the most active, talkative and most mentally involved in the different issues discussed in the selected Texts. The results also indicate to what extent children are important in African families. The discussion and interpretation of these results has enabled the researcher to contend that the deep messages conveyed through One Is Enough mainly concern the importance of children and consequences of childlessness in African societies.

Text of I Durma Anak Lara is a written text held by Balinese people. The text conveys life philosophy how to behave in the community especially in social behavior. The text is figured by I Durma as the main figure and his father as the supporting figure. This text is viewed to be very interesting to explore since there is deep moral value embed. In addition, the research also aimed to preserve the existence of the text in the community especially for the youth. The moral value is realized in behavioral process. Because of those reason, this research explored how behavioral process works in the text. The theory used to solve the problem is the theory of transitivity as part of Systemic Functional Linguistics proposed by Halliday (2014). The research used was qualitative research because this research focused on social phenomenon and the theory was used as analyze the problem. The data were taken from Balinese text written by Suwija, et.al (2019). The technique used to collect the data was syntagmatic and paradigmatic. The result of the research indicated that the text has very deep moral value that must be applied in community. The moral values were described with clauses applying behavioral process. The behaviors were performed with verbs related to physical motions which influence psychology aspects. The word lara ‘difficult’ cannot be translated from the lexicon, but it is interpreted as the success can be obtained through the difficult efforts which must be done consciously and seriously.
