Abstract:
Every year, ten thousand Sunda Pangolins (Manis javanica) are rescued and confiscated from the illegal trade around Southeast Asia, including Thailand. Most of them are usually moribund and need intensive veterinary interventions to recover their health before being released to the wild. However, a lack of reliable haematology and clinical biochemistry references for Thai confiscated Sunda pangolins is a major difficulty for reaching this goal. The aim of this study was to establish a standard panel of haematology and serum biochemistry profiles used for confiscated pangolins in Thailand. Coccygeal venepuncture of 52 confiscated pangolins was performed. Haematology and serum biochemistry data acquisitions were made using automated blood analysers. The lower and upper limits at 90% confidence interval were calculated. The means of all parameters were calculated and then compared with those in two previous studies (p < 0.005). Blood corpuscle morphometry was done manually. All blood corpuscles in females were bigger than males. There were differences of haematologic and biochemical parameters among this study and previous studies in some aspects. Wide scientific discussion was made to explain these variations. A panel of haematology and serum biochemistry profiles for Thai confiscated Sunda pangolin has been established. Veterinarians can refer to all parameters to evaluate the animals’ health and diseases.

East African Journal of Health and Science 6, no. 1 (July 3, 2023): 187–95. http://dx.doi.org/10.37284/eajhs.6.1.1281.

Abstract:
Africa bears a heavy burden of diverse diseases which includes blood diseases that overwhelm the healthcare system. A multitude of factors were believed to be responsible for this burden and it includes a lack of trained healthcare workforce, multi-disciplinary research on diseases facing the region, and a dearth of advanced diagnostic and clinical services for haematologic disorders. Measures taken to improve the situation includes increased health budgetary spending which had marginally improved. The improvement thus far achieved in haematology and blood transfusion education and research need to be determined. Three databases, namely Google Scholar, PubMed and Core, were searched for literature on haematology and blood transfusion education and research. About 2616 articles were identified, of which 7 articles were included for the review following screening and eligibility assessment by independent reviewers. The articles reviewed revealed that there was a significant improvement in haematology and blood transfusion education and research. This has translated to an improved health workforce, service delivery and research capacity and profile. However, these gains were not quantifiably presented to judge the real progress against any set standards. To fully understand the progress made and the levels that need to be reached, a comprehensive, multifaceted, and multinational study that explicitly explores the improvement measures taken and their consequential outcome is necessary.

Abstract:
Objective: To determine the haematological parameters and coagulation profile in patients with Chronic Liver Disease and to study their correlation with disease severity. Study Design: Cross sectional study. Place and Duration of Study: Department of Gastroenterology, Pak Emirates Military Hospital, Rawalpindi Pakistan and Department of Haematology, Armed Forces Institute of Pathology, Rawalpindi Pakistan, from Sep 2017 to Aug 2018. Methodology: Hundred and eighty patients diagnosed with chronic liver disease were included in the study and compared with 60 normal healthy age and sex matched individuals. Haematologic parameters were assessed by automated haematology analyzer, peripheral blood films examined and coagulation studies were performed. These parameters were studied in association with disease severity. Results: A total of 180 cases of Chronic Liver Disease were analyzed. Median age of patients was 42 years with a male to female ratio of 2.2:1. Anaemia and thrombocytopenia were prominently seen in chronic liver disease. The haemoglobin level and platelet count significantly decreased with increasing severity of disease. Prothrombin time and activated partial thromboplastin time were prolonged in majority of patients. Conclusion: Haematologic parameters and coagulation profile are cost effective methods for assessing severity of chronic liver disease and monitoring for complications and prognosis
