O roteiro do documentário Suicídio?
Abstract: This Master's dissertation consists of the elaboration of two scripts (one is a fiction and the other one is a documentary) about the guerrilla fighter Iara Iavelberg. The fiction script will narrate the life of Iara, one of the leaders of the student movement in the 60's. A Psychology student at USP and later a teacher of the preparation course of Grêmio and the University itself, Iara was active at POLOP (Working Political-Marxist Revolutionary Organization), VPR (Popular Revolutionary Vanguard), a Che Guevara sympathizing organization), VAR-PALMARES and at MR-8. During the most radical period of military dictatorship in the country, she entered clandestinity, participated actively in the armed fight and had an intense affair with Carlos Lamarca. Iara was cruelly murdered in August 1971, but back then the official version was that she had committed suicide during a police raid in Salvador (BA). Both the documents related to her autopsy and the ones that report the crime scene have disappeared. This is a movie on the character, which follows the path of Iara without the intention of giving didactic explanations about the political moment. The historical facts are shown when they relate directly to the movement of the characters, which is the case of the raid that caused the fall of Iara's hiding place. The full-length movie becomes increasingly more claustrophobic and more focused on Iara's emotional oscillations as the raid closes up, and Lamarca and herself are more and more wanted and isolated. And it is mostly a love story, in which Iara's and Lamarca's letters are essential to structure the script. In the script, Iara's character is built through the intersection of multiple representations, to wit: political and ideological context, biographic profile, family life, interpersonal relationships and love life. The following were also used: photos in files, parts of movies, newspapers and news from that time; and fragments of Carlos Lamarca's journal, with letters written to Iara shortly prior to the captain's death. In the last years of their lives, Iara and Lamarca fell in love. At that time, Iara went through several hiding places, located in different cities of Brazil, used countless nicknames and disguises, took a training course at Vale do Ribeira, heard about the torture and death of many friends. Despite the fear and clear collapse the military regime imposed to the revolutionary movements, Iara chose, together with Lamarca, to stay in the country and fight to the end. The script of the documentary Suicide? is built based on a main narrative line, which discusses issues related to Iara Iavelberg's body exhumation and investigates the true circumstances of her death; which were never actually clarified: not by the press and much less by the books. This movie will not be a biography of a historical personality; it will be an investigation, an up-to-date and never seen search process that tries to clarify to the audience an episode that took place in Brazilian history, at the height of the military dictatorship and that up until today remains surrounded by lies, gaps and contradictions. All books on this theme published up to today (which were mostly written in the 80's) are not part of a detailed investigation on the death of the guerrilla fighter. Furthermore, according to these publications, Iara committed suicide; a fact that is not compatible with the recent exhumation of her body. As an example of these publications are the books: Lamarca, by Emiliano José; Iara, by Judith Patarra; and A Ditadura Escancarada, by Elio Gaspari; in which, although the author subtly does not commit to the suicide version, he confirms the dictatorship story when he accepts the story of an alleged boy that finds Iara in a room. Also in the movie Lamarca, by Sérgio Rezende, Iara's character (Clara) commits suicide. This narrative line of the script is also composed of testimonies from historical personalities that were close to Iara, especially in her phase of change from VPR to MR-8, and the trip to Salvador (where she died). This final period of Iara's life was chosen due to the fact that it was never accurately portrayed. Through testimonies, the reasons why Iara and Lamarca traveled to Bahia will be investigated, as well as how this displacement was organized and why Iara's hiding place fell down. The people interviewed will also describe her personality, thus outlining a second narrative line which will appear in the movie always fragmented, merged with the development of the investigations related to the fighter's death. Besides, photos of Iara and material filed from that time (images and photos) are also part of this second line.

Full textThe purpose of this doctoral thesis is to discuss whether there is a Jewish view expressed in photographs, produced in Brazil, by authors with links to Judaism, and how it manifests itself. The hypothesis of the research is that it exists, but, without being able to be characterized by a general rule, it must be found in the analysis of singular cases, considering, for example, how the authors\' estrangement is reflected in their images. In order to confirm this assumption, life will be presented and the works will be interpreted of five photographers, born in Germany, exiled in Brazil because of the rise of Nazism; four of them are Jewish Alice Brill, Werner Haberkorn, Hans Gunter Flieg and Peter Scheier and one married to a Jew Hildegard Rosenthal. All registered the city of São Paulo, being these images the focus of the analysis, except in the case of Flieg, whose photos to be studied will be the industrial ones, since they are the most important of his production. These authors, with a hybrid identity, expressed a foreign look at the reality they portrayed, using modern styles imported from Europe, such as the New Vision, New Objectivity and Machine Aesthetics, contributing enormously, thus, to innovate Brazilian photography.
