Abstract:
The research was conducted to find out the impacts of Beel sanctuary management on fish production of the HaltiBeelTanki fish sanctuary and socio-economic competence of adjacent fishermen, Natore, Bangladesh through random sampling with questionnaire survey and secondary data. The main objectives of the research were- to find out the present status of fish production of the Beel and to know the socio-economic condition of the surrounding fishermen. A total of 68 fishermen were selected and interviewed. In the studied Beel the annual fish production was 8.8 MT in 2012 where Beel sanctuary management increased the production up to 15.2 MT in 2013. The average fish production increased 2.6 MT per year. Fish species such as Ayre, Calbaosh, Pabda, Sharputi etc. were absent before the project (before 2012) but at present available at a rate of 20g, 1000g, 300g, and 1200g per day respectively. The study revealed that about 77% of the fishermen preferred nuclear family where only 23% joint family. It was found that about 63% fishermen were illiterate and there was no H.S.C pass fisherman. The average income of the selected fishermen was 8125 taka/month and about 58% fishers were able to save money 501-1000 taka/month after the project.J. Environ. Abstract:
In Bangladesh, English is taught as a foreign language. The English Language Teaching Improvement Project (ELTIP) introduced commutative textbooks in between 1992 to 2001 from class three to the higher secondary level. The main aim of ELTIP is to facilitate the teaching and learning of English with a methodology that will encourage students to acquire communicative competence in English through regular practice of these skills. Each of the books contains many tasks on speaking, but unfortunately in reality there is no practice and reflection of this skill. The speaking skill is never examined in S.S.C. and H.S.C. exam though in the English medium schools the scenario is totally opposite. Now the students who get admitted in the private universities having a very poor competency in speaking face great problems from the very beginning because English is the medium of instruction in these universities and general English courses are compulsory for all students. Very few students are capable of understanding lectures given in English. So conducting the class in English becomes a great challenge for all teachers. In my paper, I intend to analyse some factors that are closely related with teaching speaking. Then I will try to evaluate how Public Speaking course at Stamford University Bangladesh plays a vital role in teaching speaking, and our teachers’ and learners’ opinions regarding this course. Abstract:
The experiences gathered during the theoretical and experimental investigations of the thrust and journal high stiffness bearing (H.S.B.) allowed to improvement of their characteristics. New elements of the throttling system were introduced into the journal H.S.B. to make possible this improvement. It was shown that the H.S.B. can reach infinite stiffness in a wide range of the loading forces having at the same time zero or submicronic shaft displacement. Additionally, the load-displacement characteristic of the H.S.B. may have the prescribed negative displacement to make possible the full compensation of elastic deformation of connected machine parts. The influence of journal rotation on the H.S.B. load-displacement characteristics is discussed in this paper. The H.S.B. of presented characteristics may be applied to many precise devices, e.g., to ultra-precision grinding machines.

Abstract:
This study examines whether recent changes to the mathematics courses offered in the final year of secondary school (Year 12) in the state of Victoria, Australia have affected the learning outcomes of students in terms of then: skill levels in algebra, calculus and problem solving; and in terms of their preparation for a tertiary mathematics unit. The impact of these changes on the transition from secondary to tertiary mathematics is also considered. A comparison is made between students who attempted a first year mathematics unit at the University of Melbourne (U. of M.) having completed the new V.C.E. (Victorian Certificate of Education) mathematics courses and mathematics courses from the previous H.S.C. (Higher School Certificate) system. The comparison involves the use of tests administered upon entrance to a tertiary mathematics unit at the U. of M., and questionnaires. In 1991, V.C.E, students and H.S.C. students attempted the same mathematics test at the U. of M. and their results were compared. In 1992, the tests were attempted by V.C.E. students only. To compare new V.C.E. students and H.S.C. students, questions on the 1991 test were matched with similar questions on the 1992 tests and a panel of experts determined what the H.S.C. students who attempted the 1991 test would have been expected to average on these matched questions on the 1992 tests had they attempted them. These expected average scores were then compared with the actual scores of the new V.C.E. students. The scores of the groups were scaled when necessary. Questionnaires were administered to 1991 U. of M, mathematics students who were part of the V.C.E. pilot group in 1990, secondary mathematics educators, tertiary mathematics educators, and 1991 V.C.E. (1992 U. of M.) students. The mathematical misconceptions exhibited by new V.C.E. students are discussed and their frequencies stated. The research indicates that the new V.C.E. mathematics courses have provided the V.C.E. mathematics students in this study with significantly lower skill levels and a significantly poorer preparation for a tertiary mathematics unit than those which were previously provided by the H.S.C. mathematics courses.

Abstract:
As a teacher of the New South Wales Higher School Certificate Geography Syllabus in the 1970s, I became aware of problems of interpretation and implementation of syllabus documents dealing with models and theories of human aggregate behaviour. A positivistic underpinning allowed explanation in human geography to employ deductive - nomological methodology. This field study investigates a defined literature of academic geography including journals, and both secondary and tertiary documents to identify the extent and quality of nomothetic and idiographic traditions from the late 19th century to the mid 1970s. The literature prior to the late 1950s revealed a dominant regional tradition and idiographic methodology with an emphasis on description of uniqueness of areal phenomena. But underlying currents of a nomothetic nature, running parallel to this regionalidiographic tradition, exerted a noticeable challenge to gain acceptance in geographic circles. This kind of nomothetism was in the form of environmental determinism which held that physical laws operating in nature were also at work to shape and direct human societies. Environmental determinism contained generalised assertions, enjoyed some appeal, but lacked rigorous justification. Even within regional frameworks, authors used environmentally induced determinants to explain the unique character of regions. Not until the 1930s did environmental determinism lose its appeal, after which time the regional - idiographic tradition strengthened as an explanatory mode of human behaviour. Nomothetism emerged in the late 1950s in Australia in the application of models and theories explaining human behaviour. Normative theory was supported by an increased use of quantification and by the growing preference for systematic studies in geography. Neither mode of explanation exists at the total exclusion of the other; so that while nomothetism enjoyed widespread appeal in academic geography from the late 1950s, significant challenges were mounted against it because of its inadequacies as a mode of explaining human aggregate behaviour. Nomothetic explanation in human geography can be seen at the research level and in education circles. Many normative models and theories found their way into senior geography courses to the extent they promoted a systems approach. Teachers would have been aware of normative theory in geography from their university studies and teacher training courses during the late 1950s and throughout the 1960s. The tension between associated explanatory modes in systematic and regional geography becomes apparent in the analysis of the N.S.W. H.S.C. Geography Syllabus in which confusing statements raise problems for teachers interpreting and implementing this prescriptive document. Given these tensions and problems of explanation in human geography, the adoption of a critical rationalist viewpoint as propounded by Karl Popper is suggested as a possible solution for geography teachers when interpreting a syllabus such as that of the N.S.W. H.S.C. Falsification rather than verification should be the node of inquiry towards explanation of human aggregate behaviour.

Gomez, Juan Carlos. "H.B.C. fuse models based on fundamental arc mechanisms." Thesis, Sheffield Hallam University, 1994. http://shura.shu.ac.uk/6848/.

Full text
Abstract:
The Thesis presents an in-depth study of arcing behaviour of H. B. C. Fuses for a range of fuse elements and fillers, under critical current conditions. The methodologies used were the standard breaking capacity short-circuit test plus the application of crow-bar, Xray studies, metallographic microscopic and optical fiber arc detection techniques. Due to the observation of some unknown and puzzling arc phenomena it was decided to pursue the arc investigation by an extensive test programme of single uniform wire fuse elements. From the investigation a basic arc mechanism for the pre-peak and post-peak arcs period was discovered. The new mechanism was applied to single wire, strip, long notched, medium notched and short notched fuse elements and to paralleled wires and strips immersed in three quartz filler types: standard sand, high quality granular quartz and bound quartz in two different sizes. The proposed arc mechanism was modelled by a computer program which was used to simulate the described fuse constructions. The results of over 800 tests and subsequent simulation undoubtedly confirm that the proposed arc mechanism is applicable for the described fuse types. The experimental and analytical results are close enough to justify the model application for fuse designers and fuse users. A critical comparison of the experimental and analytical results with previous findings published by other researchers is presented. A detailed arc mechanism and the key behaviour rules are proposed, they are: " Maximum column voltage can not exceed the arc-root voltage. " The arc-root voltage and the initial dv/dt values are influenced by filler characteristics and are able to precisely characterize the filler behaviour. " The dv/dt, and consequently the burn-back are instantaneous current density functions. The application of the above rules allows the fuse designer to tailor the fuse element in order to obtain specific current and arc voltage waveforms. It is believed that the proposed arc mechanism and computer model is able to explain some puzzling are phenomena and eventually could be applied to predicting other low overload H. B. C. fuse behaviour.

Abstract:
In the age of accountability and assessment, there is a need to ensure that data provided regarding student achievement can be effectively and appropriately utilized by school site administrators in a systematic way to improve student achievement. This study identified Heartland Educational Consortium Title I principals' and assistant principals' perceptions of their use of data as decision-makers in raising student achievement, with primary emphasis on Florida's Differentiated Accountability Model. Quantitative results revealed statistically significant differences in data use by administrators. Use of data by administrators for professional development was statistically significantly different from school improvement, leadership, or data skills. Data monitoring processes differed statistically significantly from school improvement. School improvement was identified by administrators as the area in which they use data most. Professional development was identified by the administrators as the area in which they use data least. No statistically significant differences occurred between principals and assistant principals in use of data measured by subscales. Principals and assistant principals suggested that professional development, provided by school, district, and state personnel, supported their use of data. Overwhelmingly, time was cited most often by principals and assistant principals as a barrier to data use. Findings suggest that administrators should continue to use data for achievement-related decision making for school improvement. Specifically, administrators should continue to work with leadership teams, school staffs, and School Advisory Councils to identify school improvement strategies using multiple sources of data and analyzing trends. Contradictory findings imply that administrators reevaluate how they use data for professional development. School district personnel should reevaluate their professional development programs for administrators. An additional implication from the findings is that district personnel must support school level administrators in "finding time" to analyze data. District administrators should consider strategies for school level administrators which eliminate time as a factor mitigating using data. The limited sample size provides a need to replicate with a larger size. A larger sample might provide insight into statistically significant differences between perceptions of assistant principals and principals.

Abstract:

The paper presents a study of the influence of cyclic loading on the cleavage length at the steel-concrete interface. The variables were number of repetitions of load, level of repeated loads, steel stress, concrete strength, concrete cover thickness and bar diameter.the 240 uniaxial specimems were tested under both monotonic and cyclic loading to simulate a segment of the tensile portion of a reinforced concrete beam between two successive tensile cracks. The results of the study showed that the maximum cleavage length under cyclic loading tests was found to be significantly large then the maximum cleavage length measured under monotonic loading tests.the maximum cleavage length also increase with increasing cover thickness and concrete strength respectively.the bar sizes had little effect on the cleavage length. Both the crack width on the concrete surface under loading and unloading were not found to be significantly affected by the magnitude of the cyclic loading. the crack width in the gergely-lutz expression as adopted by the aci 813-83 applies reasonably to the reinforced concrete members subjected to cyclic loading.

Abstract:
This chapter presents the text of a lecture on John Donne's poetry given at the British Academy's 2009 Chatterton Lecture on History. This text analyses the claims made in H.J.C. Grierson's The Poems of John Donne that John Donne is a manuscript poet for the twentieth century and a poet of, and for, the new university discipline of English. It argues that subsequent understandings of Donne and his works, in manuscript and print, and by different audiences, are necessary elements of the poet we read today.

Abstract:
The multimeric composition of von Willebrand factor (vWf) from cultured human endothelial cells (h.e.c.) has been compared with the multimeric composition of vWf from h.e.c. culture supernatant, human normal platelets and plasma. H.e.c. were derived from umbilical cord veins by collagenase digestion, seeded in culture flasks and grown to confluence in TC 199 culture medium, supplemented with 20% foetal calf serum (FCS). At confluency, cells were harvested by rubber policeman, resuspended in 500 |o.l HBSS with protease inhibitors and stored with culture media until assay. H.e.c. and platelet lysates were obtained by freezing-and-thawing (5 times) and by the addition of 1% Sodium Dodecyl Sulphate (SDS) before centrifugation at 10,000 x g for 20 min at 20°C. Plasma, culture supernatants and cell lysates supernatants were run under the same conditions in an SDS 1.4%, LGT-agarose electrophoresis system using a discontinous buffer. Multimeric patterns were shown by radiolabelled affinity purified rabbit anti-human polyclonal antibody. In all the experiments cultured h.e.c. supernatants exhibited all the set of multimers of vWf usually observed in normal plasma. When vWf from cultured h.e.c. extracts was analyzed, a set of multimers with higher molecular weight was shown, with a pattern very similar to platelet's. We conclude that vWf stored in h.e.c. compartments is characterized by higher molecular weight multimers than culture supernatants. This behaviour recalls the differences recorded between plasma and platelet vWf.

Abstract:
Abstract In this paper, we perform 3D CFD simulations to understand the thermal operation of a High Breaking Capacity (H.B.C.) electric fuse within a Li-ion battery pack. The main focus is on evaluating the thermal behavior of a commercially available H.B.C. fuse containing four notched silver fuse elements through a numerical and experimental study that investigates the effect of the magnitude of electric current. For the numerical analysis we perform time-accurate, conjugate heat transfer-based 3D CFD simulations on high spatial resolution grids with commercial CFD software STAR-CCM+. Specifically, we utilize an electrodynamic potential model to calculate current density and the corresponding Ohmic heat generation of the fuse. The results of the numerical simulations with temperature dependent fuse material properties are validated against the experimental temperature measurements. The spatial distribution of temperature, and current in the fuse and its connected components are also compared for various input current values to evaluate the thermal performance of the fuse under a range of operating conditions.
