Abstract:
This article examines the history of the development of astronomy in the Middle Ages as evidenced by the emergence of reliable Muslim scholars in the history of Muslim scientific civilization. The method used is a literature review by looking at the historical references to the development of astronomy. From the results of the study it was found that the development of Islamic science (1250 AD / 647 H - 1800 AD / 1214 H) in astronomy was divided into 4 periods including the first period which is believed to be the era of assimilation and the initial struggle of Greek, Indian and Sasanid astronomy (Persia). (700 AD / 80 AH – 825 AD / 209 AH), the second period is believed to be a major investigation and acceptance and modification of the Ptolemaic astronomical system (825 AD / 209 H - 1025 AD / 415 H), the third period as a period of advancement of the system Islamic astronomy is believed to be the middle ages of astronomy (1025 AD / 415 H - 1450 AD / 853 H), the fourth period was a period of stagnation in which not many scientific contributions were achieved (1450 AD / 853 H - 1900 AD / 1317 H).

Abstract:
The exploitation of high acid wells is facing severe corrosion challenges in the A and B gas fields in Sichuan, thus using lined steel pipe is a reliable and cost-effective anti-corrosion measure. However, lined steel pipe welding involves dissimilar steel welding, and anti-corrosion performances will be affected if the welding process is unreasonable. So it is necessary to make evaluation for corrosion of lined steel pipe. In this paper, taking welding gap of L245/825 lined steel pipe as example, the anti-SSC performances of L245/825 straight and ring welding gaps in NACE A solution were studied by CR method, and anti-cracking performances of them were evaluated by laboratory experiments. Then corrosion performances of L245/825 lined steel pipe welding gaps and L360NCS carbon steel were studied in the corrosive environment found in the Tian Dong 5-1 high sour gas well. Laboratory and field tests show that straight and ring welding gaps of L245/825 lined steel pipe have good anti-environment and anti-cracking performances of electrochemical corrosion in the high acid environment. The technology of welding process selected in the paper is reliable. Research results provide references for welding operation of L245/825 lined steel pipe in high sour gas fields.

"Effect of sintering temperature and cooling rate on microstructure, phase formation, and critical current density of Ag-sheathed Bi1.8Pb0.4Sr2Ca2Cu3Ox superconducting tapes." Journal of Materials Research 13, no. 2 (February 1998): 261–68. http://dx.doi.org/10.1557/jmr.1998.0036.

Abstract:
Silver-sheathed Bi–Pb–Sr–Ca–Cu–O (2223) superconducting tapes (with a starting composition of Bi1.8Pb0.4Sr2Ca1Cu2O8, calcium cuprate, and CuO) were fabricated by the powder-in-tube technique. The tapes were sintered at various temperatures to optimize the formation of Bi1.8Pb0.4Sr2Ca2Cu3O10 phase within the tape. The results show that sintering within the temperature range of 815–825 °C can produce tapes with high critical current density (Jc). The Jc of samples sintered at the higher temperature of 825 °C, where more liquid is present, depended markedly on the rate at which tapes were cooled from the sintering temperature; samples sintered at lower temperatures did not exhibit such a cooling-rate effect. The optimum combination of phase purity and microstructure that yielded an average transport Jc of ≥ 2.5 × 104 A/cm2 was obtained when the tapes were sintered at 825 °C for 150 h and cooled at a rate of 25 °C/h from the sintering temperature. Quenching studies indicate that the Bi-2223 phase becomes unstable below 700 °C during slow cooling. This result may have important implications for processing Bi–Sr–Ca–Cu–O tapes with high Jc. Addition of 15 vol.% Ag flakes to the monolithic core exerted no significant effect on Jc.

Pradofloxacin—a dual-targeting fluoroquinolone—is the most recent approved for use in food animals. Minimum inhibitory and mutant prevention concentration values were determined for pradofloxacin, ceftiofur, enrofloxacin, florfenicol, marbofloxacin, tildipirosin, tilmicosin, and tulathromycin. For M. haemolytica strains, MIC50/90/100 values were ≤0.016/≤0.016/≤0.016 and MPC50/90/100 values were 0.031/0.063/0.063; for P. multocida strains, the MIC50/90/100 values ≤0.016/≤0.016/0.031 and MPC50/90/100 ≤ 0.016/0.031/0.063 for pradofloxacin. The pradofloxacin Cmax/MIC90 and Cmax/MPC90 values for M. haemolytica and P. multocida strains, respectively, were 212.5 and 53.9 and 212.5 and 109.7. Similarly, AUC24/MIC90 and AUC24/MPC90 for M. haemolytica were 825 and 209.5, and for P. multocida, they were 825 and 425.8. Pradofloxacin would exceed the mutant selection window for >12–16 h. Pradofloxacin appears to have a low likelihood for resistance selection against key bovine respiratory disease bacterial pathogens based on low MIC and MPC values.

The pharmacological tests were conducted from March 2004 to January 2007 in the Annex to the Biot?rio Experimental Center of Agricultural Sciences (CCA) at the Universidade Federal of Piau? (UFPI). The plant material was collected in the states of Piau? and Maranh?o, and identified by a boatanist from the Graziela Barroso Herbarium (CCN/UFPI). It was determined the antihelmintic activity in vitro of aqueous (AE) and ethanolic (EE) extracts of the plants Annona squamosa, Hymenea courbaril, Operculina macrocarpa, Simarouba versicolor and Scoparia dulcis on Ascaridia galli and in vivo on the nematodes Ascaridia galli and Heterakis gallinarum. The in vitro tests were performed in adults helminth, male/female, collected the small intestine of chiken necropsied. Parasites were placed in Petri plates, divided into groups of ten/plates with three replicates for each concentration. These contain the extracts in volumes of 2, 4, 8, 16 and 32mL plus of 58, 56, 52, 44 and 28 mL of the Tyrode solution completing a volume of 60 mL/plate. The plates were incubated in B.O.D. at 37 ? C (? 1) and observed each 24 h, totaling 96 h. In this period there was the percentage of mortality and were considered dead those parasites with loss of motility after mild pressure. In vivo assays anthelmintic activity used up 108 adult chicken, with average weight of 1.5 kg, divided in 14 test groups of six animals. We used one positive control group (piperazine tetrahidrate), three negative controls groups: distilled water for aqueous extract and DMSO and Tween 80 to ethanolic extract, a total of 18 groups. The results were evaluated by analysis of variance of the average percentage of mortality over time (SAEG and SAS). The higher percentage of in vitro mortality test on the A. galli were registered as AE's sumidade florida of S. dulcis and A. squamosa being 30.7% and 66.7% respectively, while the EE was more effective for the H. courbaril, stem from the S. dulci; O. macrocarpa and S. versicolor with percentage of 70.7%, 46.0%, 38.7% and 26.7%, respectively. In vivo tests in the AE of A. squamosa presented the greatest percentage of elimination of A. galli (38.95%). The AE also was the most effective for sumidade florida, stem and root of S. dulcis and for the S. versicolor removing 28.68%, 21.38% 36.23% and 19.32%, respectively. The plants O. macrocarpa and H. courbaril showed no significant difference (P> 0.05) between the percentage of extracts with the elimination for AE of 23.64% and 24.5% and the EE of 22.4% and 27.03% respectively. In tests with H. gallinarum the percentage of elimination were insignificant for most plants, where only the S. versicolor had percentuals elimination of more expressive with 20.22% for EA and 29.15% for EE and for A. squamosa, confirming in vitro results, AE had his best action with 20.60% of elimination. These results suggest that although the percentage of elimination of the test in vivo have been lower than in vitro test, they confirmed that the A. galli was more sensitive to treatment that H. gallinarum probably because this parasite stay at cecum and the substances responsible for action on the A. galli were present mostly in aqueous fraction and the H. gallinarum in alcoholic fraction.

Smith, E. D. "Engaging with comedy as social conscience in Terry Pratchett's 'Discworld'." Thesis, Liverpool John Moores University, 2016. http://researchonline.ljmu.ac.uk/5260/.

Full text
Abstract:
This project sits within the field of popular culture, exploring the ways in which people read Terry Pratchett’s Discworld. The primary research objective was to ascertain whether political values encoded within the comedic text would be understood by its readers. An iterative mixed methods approach was used to gauge audience engagement. Of the potential audiences, there was an audience segment who rejected the text on generic (fantasy) grounds. Of those with a greater investment of time, in dramatic production, this led to resentment and a refusal to impute any significance to the text. Audiences of the productions who invested less time rejected the fantasy genre but accepted the significance of the text as they experienced it. Subsequent on-line research on the more engaged fan audience showed different levels of engagement. Among fans, there was a minority who enjoyed the text but rejected any real world significance. More often the fans described their Discworld favourites in terms that reflected a connection with their own lived experience. Specific themes emerged which were discussed in relation to the text: The accessibility of the comic protagonists is discussed in relation to models of masculinity in late modernity. Vimes was admired by all demographic groups, often as an aspirational figure, with 64% nominating him as a favourite. Transtextual relationships with the gothic articulate a female voice within the Discworld and shows how fans relate their own mortality to the Discworld character Death. The theme of personal social responsibility recurs in the Discworld and is discussed in relation to the macro level politics of terrorism and conflict. Discworld fans tended to be socially and politically active, the majority of the fan respondents felt that key socio-political themes were evident in the Discworld diegesis.

Abstract:
Drawing on Nordau and Spengler’s theories of “degeneration” in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Lawrence posits the idea of a physical and moral decline of both individuals and collective social forms in Europe. He therefore sets out, through his personal travels and travel narratives, on a quest for the “regenerative” possibilities which he believes non-European places and cultures may have to offer. His travel writings examine the encounter between his European characters and the cultural otherness they experience abroad in the form of foreign individuals and societies, places and the sacred powers that inhabit those places. Lawrence postulates that the “regeneration” or revitalisation of the European subject is determined by the traveller’s ability to let himself or herself be altered by the power of otherness. Each of his works thus analyses the process of alteration undergone by the European subject, which is affected by various factors such as the latter’s relationship to the home country and the end sought through travel, his social status, education and gender.Lawrence’s works are primarily concerned with the revitalisation of the female subject and most of his travelling characters are in fact unaccompanied female travellers – an uncommon choice at the time. Yet Lawrence does not contemplate the possibility of the female subject’s self-emancipation since her revitalisation can only be brought about by the erotic encounter with a male other endowed with the power of otherness.Lawrence nonetheless experiments with several types of regeneration – individual and collective, political and spiritual – which may contribute to the renewal of western civilisation

Bouttier, Sarah. "L'écriture du non-humain dans la poesie de D.H Lawrence." Thesis, Paris 3, 2011. http://www.theses.fr/2011PA030186/document.

Full text
Abstract:
In D. H. Lawrence‘s poetry, the non-human is both a form of primordial vitality and the living world of non-human creatures. Non-human creatures are seen as more able to embody this vitality than modern men, stifled by their civilization. The non-human stands outside the sphere of culture, and its mode of existence is consequently an untouched, pure form of presence. Therefore, Lawrence faces the difficulty of representing this pure presence through an inherently ―human‖ means, poetic language. However, his stance is not entirely anti-humanist: his poetic writing of the non-human is founded on an unceasing conflict between the will to break free from the constraints of humanity and the necessity to remain within a human sphere, and even to reinstate the limit between human and non-human. In the representation of the non-human as mere living matter, this conflict is already manifest, taking the shape of a tension between matter as existing completely outside human discourse, and matter as a scientific object par excellence. When Lawrence evokes the creatures, this conflict brings about a reconfiguration of specific non-human modes of being in the world (emotions, perception, agency), which allow the creatures to interact with each other without diminishing or abstracting their presence. In the poet‘s own relationship with the non-human creatures, the conflict appears again as Lawrence questions the limit between human and non-human while reinstating it. At last, the dialectic between a will to capture non-human presence and the fear of abstracting it when including it within the sphere of language seems particularly present in what we have attempted to establish as a poetic language specific to the representation of the non-human, in Lawrence and other poets

Abstract:
They say I cannot think ».
From his early youth D. H. Lawrence was recognized as an outstanding writer. This was not however the case for his authority as a thinker. As he complains in a letter about Lady Ottoline and Bertrand Russell: "They say I cannot think". Lawrence did however demonstrate, from the beginning of his career as a writer, a taste for theoretical reflection. He was to write numerous essays and would insert long speculative passages into his fictional texts. How therefore are we to assess Lawrence as thinker? Can we find, in the supposed “weaknesses" of his thought, questions to be addressed to the canonical discourses of the philosophical order? Could it be the case that Lawrence’s thought, which borders on the territory of philosophy, even as the writer scrupulously refuses to be counted as a philosopher (in referring to his "philosophy", Lawrence resorts to deprecatory quotation marks or refers to “this pseudo-philosophy of mine”), might offer a perspective from which to question philosophy in its most ingrained evidence? Or indeed that philosophical discourse, so vigorously committed to the pursuit of questioning, might in its turn be incapable of asking certain questions concerning the procedures of thinking? The implication being that only the recourse to a more indirect path, by way of "literature", might enable us to ask certain decisive questions? The gain resulting from our venturing onto these byways, in our approach to the order of philosophical discourse, can be enumerated in terms of the three following guidelines: 1. The role of emotional processes in thought; 2. The importance of the “poetic function” of language for thought; 3. The pluralization of enunciation, made possible by the surprise of the enunciative constructions specific to literature or to the poetic

Abstract:
This thesis explores the gendered symbolism of women's music lessons in English fiction, 1870-1914. I consider canonical and non-canonical fiction in the context of a wider discourse about music, gender and society. Traditionally, women's music lessons were a marker of upper- and middle-class respectability. Musical ‘accomplishment' was a means to differentiate women in the ‘marriage market', and the music lesson itself was seen to encode a dynamic of obedient submission to male authority as a ‘rehearsal' for married life. However, as the market for musical goods and services burgeoned, musical training also offered women the potential of an independent career. Close reading George Eliot's Daniel Deronda (1876) and Jessie Fothergill's The First Violin (1877), I discuss four young women who negotiate their marital and vocational choices through their interactions with powerful music teachers. Through the lens of the music lessons in Emma Marshall's Alma (1888) and Israel Zangwill's Merely Mary Ann (1893), I consider the issues of class, respectability and social emulation, paying particular attention to the relationship between aesthetic taste and moral values. I continue by considering George Du Maurier's Trilby (1894) alongside Elizabeth Godfrey's Cornish Diamonds (1895), texts in which female pupils exhibit genuine power, eventually eclipsing both their music teachers and the artist-suitors for whom they once modelled. My final chapter discusses three texts which problematize the power of women's musical performance through depicting female music pupils as ‘New Women' in conflict with the people around them: Sarah Grand's The Beth Book (1895), D. H. Lawrence's The Trespasser (1912) and Compton Mackenzie's Sinister Street (1913). I conclude by looking forward to representations of women's music lessons in the modernist period and beyond, with a reading of Katherine Mansfield's ‘The Wind Blows' (1920) as well as Rebecca West's The Fountain Overflows (1956).

Abstract:
Dealing with episcopal culture in Milan during Lothar I’s age (822-855), that is the age of Archbishop Angilbert II (824-859), is a difficult task, because of the lack of sources and uncertain origin of many extant manuscripts. As a matter of fact, Angilbert II shared a common cultural background with his transalpine colleagues, but he had to face the loss of the schools in Milan and to rebuild a cultural system which could also improve the political role of his see to the detriment of Pavia. This paper analyses some main features of his cultural policy: the activity of masters accustomed to the new ideas of Carolingian schools, in particular the role played by Hildemar and his library in Civate; the renewal of St. Ambrose’s cult and Angilbert’s iconographical choices on the golden altar of Sant’Ambrogio, in connection with literary activity in Milan (as for the case of bishop Mansuetus’ letter copied in Montpellier, Bibliothèque Interuniversitaire, Faculté de medicine, H 233).

Abstract:
Abstract Cotton, being a leading commercial fibre crop, is grown on 20.5 million hectares in three major cotton-producing countries: China, India and Pakistan. Wide differences in yield per hectare exist among these countries and these are being aggravated by changing climate conditions, i.e. higher temperatures and significant seasonal and regional fluctuation in rainfall. Pakistan is one of the countries most affected by climate change. The disastrous effects of extreme periods of heat stress in cotton were very prominent in Pakistan during the growing seasons 2013-2014 (40-50% fruit abortion) and 2016-2017 (33% shortfall), which posed an alarming threat to the cotton-based economy of Pakistan. Poor resilience of the most commonly grown cotton varieties against extreme periods of heat stress are considered to be major factors for this drastic downfall in cotton production in Pakistan. Using the approach of induced mutation breeding, the Nuclear Institute for Agriculture and Biology (NIAB), Faisalabad, Pakistan, has demonstrated its capabilities in developing cotton mutants that can tolerate the changed climatic conditions and sustain high yields under contrasting environments. The results of studies on the phenological and physiological traits conferring heat tolerance are presented here for thermo-tolerant cotton mutants (NIAB-878, NIAB-545, NIAB-1048, NIAB-444, NIAB-1089, NIAB-1064, NIAB-1042) relative to FH-142 and FH-Lalazar. NIAB-878 excelled in heat tolerance by maintaining the highest anther dehiscence (82%) and minimum cell injury percentage (39%) along with maximum stomatal conductance (27.7 mmol CO2/m2/s), transpiration rate (6.89 μmol H2O/m2/s), net photosynthetic rate (44.6 mmol CO2/m2/s) and physiological water use efficiency (6.81 mmol CO2/μmol H2O) under the prevailing high temperatures.

Abstract:
In this study, the tensile and stress rupture behavior were investigated on GH4151 alloy with different grain sizes. The test samples were obtained from turbine disk with different positions. The analysis of micro-structure, grain size, and fracture morphology were carried out by several typical characteristics way, indicating that the influence of grain size on tensile and stress rupture behavior is mainly affected by the number of grain boundary, which affects tensile and stress rupture behavior of the GH4151 superalloy. The tensile strength of fine-grained specimens are higher than tensile strength of coarse-grained specimens, and so is the plasticity. At the same test condition, stress rupture life reduced from 82.5 h to 33.5 h as the grain size decreased from 22.3 μm to 11.1 μm, which decreased by 59.4%. Moreover, the elongation rate increased from 6.60 % to 25.48 % as the grain size decreased, which increased by 286%.

Abstract:
Construction of Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor (PFBR) a 500 MWe pool type sodium cooled breeder reactor with MOX fuel has started at Kalpakkam. Instrumentation & Control (I&C) of PFBR is designed for safe, reliable and economic operation of the plant. Special feature of breeder reactors is sodium instrumentation. Leaks in sodium systems have the possibility of being exceptionally hazardous due to the reaction of liquid sodium with oxygen and water vapour in the air. In addition, leakage from primary systems can cause radioactive contamination. Potential regions of leakage are near welds and high stress areas. Sodium also reacts with concrete releasing hydrogen and leading to damage and loss of strength of concrete structures. Leaking sodium catches fire depending on its temperature. Sodium temperature in the plant ranges from 423 K at filling condition to 820 K at reactor nominal power operating condition. Leak detectors are provided on pipelines, tanks and other capacities. Sodium leak detection systems are designed to meet requirements of ASME section XI- division 3 which specifies that sodium leak at the rate of 100 g/h are to be detected in 20 h for air filled vaults and 250 h for inert vaults. Diverse leak detection methods are employed for active and non-active sodium equipment and pipes. For detection of water leaks into Sodium in steam generators, Hydrogen in Sodium Detectors (HSD) are used. Hydrogen in Argon Detectors (HAD) are used for sodium temperatures below 623 K as HSD is not effective below this temperature due to non-dissolution of hydrogen formed. Choice and challenges posed in implementation of above leak detection requirements are discussed in this paper.

Abstract:
The material TAS is a ternary chalcogenide salt with space group symmetry R3m, transparent between 1.3 and 17μm. Its large nonlinear optic coefficient and high damage threshold make TAS a promising candidate for nonlinear frequency conversion processes throughout the infrared.1 Recently, large, good quality crystals of TAS have been grown, cut, polished, and coated for CO2 laser second harmonic conversion by Westinghouse Research Laboratory. At NRL, a 2.5-cm diam 6-cm long crystal was pumped by a Lumonics 822 H P CO2 laser operating on the 9-μm P(20) transition with energy of 350 mJ in a 100 ns FWHM pulse. In type I doubling conditions, we have observed up to 25% total energy conversion to the second harmonic at 1 J/cm2 with no apparent crystal damage. Additionally, in a second similar TAS crystal we have observed both type I and type II sum frequency generation to the third harmonic with an overall total energy conversion of 1.5%. Progress toward a TAS-based OPO in the 8-12-μm range is also reported. (12min)

Abstract:
In grapevine research, phenotyping needs to be done for different traits such as abiotic and biotic stress. This phenotypic data acquisition is very time-consuming and subjective due to the limitation of manual visual estimation. Sensor-based approaches showed an improvement in objectivity and throughput in the past. For example, the ‘Phenoliner’ a phenotyping platform, based on a modified grape harvester, is equipped with two different sensor systems to acquire images in the field. It has so far been used in grapevine research for different research questions to test and apply different sensor systems. However, the driving speed for data acquisition has been limited to 0.5 - 1 km/h due to capacity of image acquisition frequency and storage. Therefore, a faster automatic data acquisition with high objectivity and precision is desirable to increase the phenotyping efficiency. To this aim, in the present study a prism-based simultaneous multispectral camera system was installed in the tunnel of the ‘Phenoliner’ with an artificial broadband light source for image acquisition. It consists of a visible color channel from 400 to 670 nm, a near infrared (NIR) channel from 700 to 800 nm, and a second NIR channel from 820 to 1,000 nm. Compared to the existing camera setup, image recording could be improved to at least 10 images per second and a driving speed of up to 6 km/h. Each image is geo-referenced using a real-time-kinematic (RTK)- GPS system. The setup of the sensor system was tested on seven varieties (Riesling, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Dornfelder, Dapako, Pinot Gris, and Phoenix) with and without symptoms of biotic stress in the vineyards of Geilweilerhof, Germany. Image analysis aims to segment images into four categories: trunk, cane, leaf, and fruit cluster to further detect the biotic stress status in these categories. Therefore, images have been annotated accordingly and first results will be shown.

Abstract:
The properties of fibrinogen and fibrin, the levels of fibrincpeptide A (FPA) and fibrin(ogen) degradation products (FDP) were studied in 34 patients with AMI who were undergoing thrombolytic and heparin therapy. They were classified into 6 groups accordingto their stage of treatment: group 1, before intravenous administration of 800.000 U streptokinase over 30 min; group 2, after a<Mnistraticn of SK but before adninistraticn of heparin; group 3, during 24 h ofthe 5 ng/h heparin continuous infusion; group 4, during 48-72 h of the 16.6 ng/h heparin continuous infhsion; group 5, after 1 week of administration of SK and with a bolus inyection of 50 rg heparin every 4 h; group 6, patients who were undergoing only heparin treatment. The Fg 1/ Fg II ratio varies during treatment with SK and heparin. In group 1 a sligjnt increase (2.5) is observed. Group 2 shows a significantdecrease (0.6) as a result of fibrinolysis. In group3 the ratio reaches normal value (1.8) while in the fourth group it is twice the normal value (4). The value for group 5 is nearly normal (2.1), and in group 6 it reaches values similar to those obtained in group 4, which implies that the rise in the Fgl/Fgll ratio is not a result of fibrinolytic treatment. TheFPA level shows and increase in patients with AMI (group 1,126 ng/ml). When SK treatment is applied (group 2), FPA decreases to 52 ng/ml. Later treatment with heparin (group-3, 82; group-4, 44 and group-5, 81ng/ml) does not neutralize thrcmbinic activity. Patients treated only with heparin (group 6) show an FPAvalue of 19 ng/ml, which is lower than in the other groups. All of this indicates that thrombin is activated after fibrinolytic treatment. FDP values show asignificant increase in the six groups (1, 53; 2, 430; 3, 128; 4, 270; 5, 139 and 6, 141 ug/ml), which indicates that during treatment with heparin the fibrinolytic activity persists. he formation of highly cross-linked fibrin is altered in groups 1,2,3 and 4,as a consequence of circulating FDP effect and fibrincgeno- lysis. The permeability of the fibrin clotdecreases in groups 1 (0.42), 2 (1.3), 4 (1.1) and 5(0.5 ml/s/ng) and increases in group 2 (23.2 ml/s/nig) with respect to the normal plasma value (3.2 ml/s/nrg). The decrease in permeability must be related to the existence of hypercoagulability resistant to heparinization. FPA values, tine Fgl/Fgll ratio, andfibrin permeability can be used to evaluate the degree of thrcmbin activity during thrombolytic treatmentinAMI.

Abstract:
Introduction: Breast cancer is the most common malignancy in women worldwide, with the exception of nonmelanoma skin tumors. The initial stage of breast cancer is one of the main predictors of survival. Mammographic screening is the most effective method for an early detection of breast cancer and premalignant lesions, with an impact on reducing mortality, considering that correct positioning during the examination is a critical factor for its quality. Methods: A casecontrol study of a mammography positioning training program (MMG) in a private center specialized in breast diagnosis. In total, 200 incidences were evaluated in 50 examinations performed by two experienced techniques, 25 examinations each. Performance criteria were evaluated in the mediolateral oblique (MLO) and craniocaudal (CC) views. In the CC, well-demonstrated lateral quadrants (QLAT), visualization of the pectoral muscle (MP), centralized nipples (MC), welldemonstrated medial quadrants (QMED), absence of pleats or folds, centralized nipples, and symmetrical breasts were considered as adequate positioning. Buck’s low positioning was considered an error criterion. In the MLO assessment, the criteria for adequate positioning were the inframammary angles (AI) visualized, nipples profiled and at the height of the MP, symmetrical breasts, absence of pleats and folds, and symmetrical MP. Pending breasts and pectoralis minor (PP) visualization were considered positioning failures. An 11-h theoretical-practical training was applied: 7 h of practice and 4 h of theory; new tests were performed and the quality criteria were reassessed. Results: Positioning errors were significantly decreased after the training. Errors in the CC incidence decreased from 39% to 11% and in the MLO from 36% to 13%. After the training, the following improved criteria were evaluated in CC: QLAT well shown rose from 50% to 94%, MP visualization rose from 21% to 62%, MC rose from 49% to 79%, QMED well shown rose from 45% to 100%, absence of pleats or folds rose from 74% to 88%, profiled nipples rose from 91% to 95%, and symmetrical breasts rose from 86% to 98%. Buck’s low positioning dropped from 19% to 0%. In the MLO incidence, the criteria that improved were: AI visualization rose from 45% to 82%, profiled nipples rose from 93% to 95%, nipples at MP height rose from 24% to 84%, absence of pleats or folds rose from 39% to 70%, symmetrical breasts rose from 90% to 100%, symmetrical MP rose from 56% to 82%, symmetrical nipples rose from 72% to 86%, and PP visualization dropped from 13% to 7%. Conclusion: The MMG positioning training program improved examination quality. It acts on a vulnerable part, which is human error. The result indicates that a simple, low-cost intervention with low technological complexity can significantly impact the quality of MMG and screening programs in our country.

Abstract:
Abstract A novel salt-bath nitrocarburizing process recently developed forms a lithium-iron compound-oxide layer on the surface of steel in concurrence with a nitride layer by adding lithium ions to the molten salt. This process has already been successfully applied to mass-produced products. However, the microstructure and its formation process of the surface layer in alloyed steels during the nitrocarburizing process have not yet been fully understood. In this study, we focus on the effect of Si and Cr, which are included in a common die steel, on the microstructure of an oxide layer of a nitrocarburized alloy. The alloys used in this study are Fe-0.4wt%C, Fe-0.4wt%C-2.0wt%Si, and Fe-0.4wt%C-2.0wt%Cr. These alloys were arc melted into button ingots under an Ar atmosphere. The ingots were annealed at 1123 K for 1.0 h, followed by air cooling and double tempering at 873 K, similar to the heat treatments employed to hot-die steels. Salt-bath nitrocarburizing was carried out at 823 K for 0.1-10 h. The microstructures of the cross-sectional surface layers of the samples were examined using an optical microscope and FE-SEM. Elemental mapping as well as phase identification of the surface layers were done by EDS, XRD, and GD-OES. In the Fe-C binary alloy, a thin continuous oxide layer of α-LiFeθ2 formed first on the outermost surface, and a thick iron nitride layer developed underneath the oxide layer, with aligned oxide particles along the grain boundaries of the nitrogen compound layer. In the case of Si addition, the outermost oxide layer became thinner and an additional oxide layer consisting of α-LiFeθ2 and (Li,Fe)3Siθ4 formed between the outer oxide layer and nitrogen compound layer, and the formation of the oxide particles in the nitrogen compound layer was fully suppressed. In the case of Cr addition, internal oxide particles formed in the nitrogen compound layer, similar to those in the binary steel, although an continuous oxide layer of CrfN,O) formed in between those layers. On the basis of these results, the inner oxide layer formed with Si addition contributes to improving the frictional wear characteristics in die steels.
