Abstract:
The dimethyl sulfoxide hemisolvate of perindoprilat [systematic name: (1S)-2-((S)-{1-[(2S,3aS,7aS)-2-carboxyoctahydro-1H-indol-1-yl]-1-oxopropan-2-yl}azaniumyl)pentanoate dimethyl sulfoxide hemisolvate], C17H28N2O5·0.5C2H6OS, an active metabolite of perindopril, has been synthesized, structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and compared with its ethanol disolvate analogue [Pascardet al.(1991).J. Med. Chem.34, 663–669]. Both compounds crystallize in the orthorhombicP212121space group in the same zwitterionic form, with a protonated alanine N atom and an anionic carboxylate group at then-alkyl chain. The three structural units present in the unit cell (two zwitterions and the solvent molecule) are held together by a rich system of O—H...O, N—H...O and C—H...O hydrogen-bond contacts.

The “elusieve” process removes approximately 10% of DDGS material, mostly fiber, yielding enhanced DDGS (E-DDGS). An experiment was conducted to compare the DE and ME in E-DDGS to those in DDGS when fed to growing and finishing pigs. Overall, E-DDGS has greater DE, ME and MEnthan DDGS.

Abstract:
The mechanisms by which oscillatory shear stress (OS) induces, while high laminar shear stress (LS) prevents, atherosclerosis are still unclear. Here, we examined the hypothesis that OS induces inflammatory response, a critical atherogenic event, in endothelial cells by a microRNA (miRNA)-dependent mechanism. By miRNA microarray analysis using total RNA from human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) that were exposed to OS or LS for 24 h, we identified 21 miRNAs that were differentially expressed. Of the 21 miRNAs, 13 were further examined by quantitative PCR, which validated the result for 10 miRNAs. Treatment of HUVECs with the miR-663 antagonist (miR-663-locked nucleic acids) blocked OS-induced monocyte adhesion, but not apoptosis. In contrast, overexpression of miR-663 increased monocyte adhesion in LS-exposed cells. Subsequent mRNA expression microarray study using HUVECs treated with miR-663-locked nucleic acids and OS revealed 32 up- and 3 downregulated genes, 6 of which are known to be involved in inflammatory response. In summary, we identified 10 OS-sensitive miRNAs, including miR-663, which plays a key role in OS-induced inflammatory responses by mediating the expression of inflammatory gene network in HUVECs. These OS-sensitive miRNAs may mediate atherosclerosis induced by disturbed flow.

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) are important for plant nutrient uptake, and mycorrhizal dependence varies between wheat genotypes. Cultivar selection under fertilized conditions may have reduced mycorrhizal associations in modern cultivars. This study investigated AMF colonization, tissue P and grain yield of five modern (post 1990) and five older (pre 1970) spring wheat cultivars over 4 site-years in Manitoba. Older cultivars actually had significantly lower AMF colonization and grain yield than modern cultivars, but no tissue P concentration differences were observed. The two highest yielding lines were released after 2004, and one of these (FBC Dylan) was selected for suitability in organic farming systems.

Abstract:
The title compound, C5D6ClN2O+·Cl−, crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group, Pbcm, and consists of a 4-chloro-2-methyl-6-oxo-3,6-dihydropyrimidin-1-ium cation and a chloride anion where both moieties lie on a crystallographic mirror. The cation is disordered and was refined as two equivalent forms with occupancies of 0.750 (4)/0.250 (4), while the chloride anion is triply disordered with occupancies of 0.774 (12), 0.12 (2), and 0.11 (2). Unusually, the bond angles around the C=O unit range from 127.2 (6) to 115.2 (3)° and similar angles have been found in other structures containing a 6-oxo-3,6-dihydropyrimidin-1-ium cation, including the monclinic polymorph of the title compound, which crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P21/c [Kawai et al. (1973). Cryst. Struct. Comm. 2, 663–666]. The cations and anions pack into sheets in the ab plane linked by N—H...Cl hydrogen bonds as well as C—H...O and Cl...O interactions. In graph-set notation, these form R 3 3(11) and R 3 2(9) rings. Theoretical calculations seem to indicate that the reason for the unusual angles at the sp 2 C is the electrostatic interaction between the oxygen atom and the adjacent N—H hydrogen.

It crystallizes in the chiral orthorhombic space groupP212121, the same as the previously reported ethanol disolvate [Pascard, Guilhem, Vincent, Remond, Portevin & Laubie (1991).J. Med. The asymmetric unit of (I)·H2O contains one independent perindoprilat zwitterion and one water molecule. These interactviastrong hydrogen bonds to give a cyclicR22(7) synthon, which provides a rigid molecular conformation. The geometric parameters of all three forms are similar. The conformations of the perhydroindole group are almost identical, but then-alkyl chain has conformational freedom. A three-dimensional hydrogen-bonding network of O—H...O and N—H...O interactions is observed in the crystal structure of (I)·H2O, similar to the other two solvates, but because of the presence of different solvents the three crystal structures have diverse packing motifs. All three solvatomorphs are additionally stabilized by nonclassical weak C—H...O contacts.

Abstract:
A module M is said to be H-supplemented if, for any submodule X of M, there exists a direct summand M′ of M such that M = X + Y if and only if M = M′ + Y for all Y ⊆ M (cf. [S. H. Mohamed and B. J. Müller, Continuous and Discrete Modules, London Mathematical Society Lecture Note Series, Vol. 147 (Cambridge University Press, 1999)]). We say that a module M is semi-lifting if any direct summand of M is H-supplemented. A H-supplemented module is a dual to a Goldie-extending module which was introduced by Akalan–Birkenmeier–Tercan [Goldie extending modules, Comm. Algebra37 (2009) 663–683]. In this paper, we give some characterizations of semi-lifting modules and H-supplemented modules. In addition, we consider generalizations of relative projectivities and apply them to the study of direct sums of semi-lifting modules.

Crawford, Andrew. "Catalytic borylation of C-H bonds : a route to photophysically interesting pyrene derivatives." Thesis, Durham University, 2011. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/663/.

Full text
Abstract:
Pyrene derivatives have found use in a wide range of applications that make use of the unique structural, optical and charge-transfer properties of pyrene. Nearly all pyrene derivatives are substituted at the 1-, 3-, 6- and 8-positions, i.e. the sites of electrophilic aromatic substitution. In contrast, derivatives substituted at the 2- and 2,7-postions of pyrene are rare, as their syntheses involve laborious multistep processes. Such derivatives are of interest because they retain the long axis of symmetry and display unusual photophysical properties. Using the regiospecific direct C-H borylation of pyrene with an Ir-based catalyst, prepared in situ via reaction of [Ir(OMe)COD]2 with 4,4’-di-tert-butyl-2,2’-bipyridine, 2,7-bis(Bpin)pyrene 1 and 2-(Bpin)pyrene 2 (pin = OCMe2CMe2O) were synthesized. Straightforward derivatization strategies, converted 1 and 2 into nominally nucleophilic and electrophilic pyrene derivatives, which were further utilized in Suzuki-Miyaura, Sonogashira, Buchwald-Hartwig and Negishi cross-coupling reactions. Using this methodology, a library of 2- and 2,7-substituted pyrenes bearing donor and acceptor groups, including aryl, ethynyl, arylethynyl, alkyl, hydroxy, alkoxy, diarylamino, carboxylic acid and diarylboryl derivatives, was prepared. The solid-state structures of several derivatives obtained by single-crystal X-ray diffraction revealed a diverse range of structures and packing modes. The influence of the substitution position and the nature of the substituent upon pyrene was investigated in a detailed photophysical study. The existence of nodal planes passing through the 2- and 7-positions, perpendicular to the molecular plane, in both the HOMO and LUMO of pyrene accounts for the differing photophysical behaviour of derivatives substituted at 2- and 2,7-positions from those substituted at the 1-position. Finally, the applicability of iridium-catalysed C-H borylation and metal-catalyzed cross-coupling is further demonstrated on a range of interesting substrates.

Eccles, Thomas B. "Are there 12 steps to better management? : how the spiritual programme of Alcoholics Anonymous may influence management performance evaluated through general management competencies." Thesis, University of Gloucestershire, 2013. http://eprints.glos.ac.uk/663/.

Full text
Abstract:
The 12 Step programme of Alcoholics Anonymous (AA, 2001) is a set of principles that provides a way of life for those that follow it and is based upon a ‘spiritual awakening’ (AA, 2001 pp59-60). The thesis is the first to examine how managers who follow this spiritual programme apply it in their organisational role through general management competencies (New, 1996). This mixed method, phenomenology-led research is placed within a social constructionist setting. A comprehensive and wide ranging literature review was conducted. The data was generated using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (Smith, 1996), the Integrated Spiritual Intelligence Scale (Amram and Dyer, 2007) and Workplace Observation (Lucia and Lepsinger, 1999). The findings explain psychological antecedents, mechanisms and pathways that inform the sample of AA managers in their work role. The discussion identifies relationships with existing efficacious management styles and concepts. Areas of heuristic value for future research are identified. These areas include exploring the 12 Steps specifically as antecedents to emotional intelligence (Payne, 1985) and strengthening the statistical validity of instruments to measure humility and honesty in context of spirituality. Limitations of this research are also identified and discussed and important reservations about the concept and constructs of spiritual intelligence (Zohar, 1997) are raised. In conclusion, the 12 Step spiritual programme was found to be the primary influence in how the sample conduct their organisational management function. The research calls for human resource processes to re-consider how those who have adopted successful recovery techniques to overcome personal crises such as dependency issues are viewed and argues that they should be more highly valued by organisations as such experiences help develop management competencies.

Pisac, Claudia A. "An experimental study of combustion characteristics of fatty acid methyl ester biodiesel." Thesis, University of Hertfordshire, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/2299/14641.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis presents an experimental investigation of combustion performance and emissions of waste cooking oil (WCO) based biodiesel. To evaluate the comparative performance of biodiesel and diesel, combustions tests were conducted using Continuous Combustion rig (CCR) and Land Rover VM diesel engine. Firstly, physical properties of WCO biodiesel and diesel samples were measured in the laboratory. Elemental analysis of WCO biodiesel showed that there are differences between the functional groups in diesel and biodiesel which lead to major differences in the combustion characteristics of the two fuel types. It was found that biodiesel had 10% lower carbon content, almost no sulphur content for biodiesel and up to 12% more oxygen content compared with diesel. This explains the lower caloric value for WCO biodiesel (up to l8 %) compared with diesel. However, higher oxygen content and double bounds in WCO biodiesel increase its susceptibility to oxidation. The CCR test results showed an increase in combustion gas temperature with the increases in biodiesel blend ratio in diesel. This was due to a faster reaction rate for biodiesel than that of diesel leading to a faster brakeage of the hydrocarbon chain to release more heat. The engine tests were performed to measure the torque and emissions for different engine speeds and loads. In general a decrease in engine torque with up to 9% for biodiesel was observed, which was due to the lower calorific value of biodiesel compared with that of diesel. The brake specific fuel consumption (BSFC) increased as the biodiesel blend ratio in diesel increases due a greater mass of fuel being injected at a given injection pressure, compared with diesel. Using WCO blends ratio up to 75% in diesel showed a reduction in exhaust emission compared with diesel, however, at the cost of increased fuel consumption. A common conclusion can be drawn in favour of the WCO biodiesel as being a greener alternative to petro-diesel when used in blend with diesel. However, due to large variations in the biomass used for biodiesel production could lead to variations in physical and chemical properties between biodiesel produced from different biomass. Therefore more stringent standards need to be imposed for biodiesel quality in order to diminish the effect of variation in physicochemical properties on engine performance and emissions. The future work in developing standard test procedures for establishing fuel properties and limits/targets would be beneficial in using a large amount of waste cooking oil in the production of biodiesel, thus contributing to reduction in CO2 and waste minimisation.

Abstract:

Abstract:
A high-temperature molten salt pump, described as mechanical, free-surface, centrifugal, vertical-shaft, sump type, working at 500°C [932°F] to 600°C [1112°F], has been developed for the Thorium-Based Molten Salt Reactor (TMSR). Flow passage components of the pump are made of Hastelloy C-276 to ensure sufficient strength and corrosion resistance at high temperature. Also, a heat shield plug with air-cooled channels was designed to separate the drive motor, seal elements, and bearings from intense radioactivity and to keep the temperature of the flange seal below 150°C [302°F] and the temperature of the bearing below 80°C [176°F]. A dry gas seal was used so that there is zero leakage. Furthermore, some analysis of hydraulics characteristics, temperature field, thermal stress, and strain was performed to research the pump’s performance, and then the temperature field and the hydraulics were measured to validate the analysis results. The results show that the hydraulics, thermal stress, and strain meet the design value very well. The pump has been successfully operated on a LiF-NaF-KF test loop for over 250 hr. at temperatures of 500°C [932°F] to 600°C [1112°F], speeds of 1050 to 1450rpm, and flows of 15 m3/h [66 gpm] to 25 m3/h [110 gpm]. Abstract:
We consider the organizational and individual benefits of implementing activities focused on increasing employee growth mindedness within a global Fortune 500 organization, with the objective of enhancing organizational effectiveness and employee retention. Growth Mindset Theory, pioneered by Stanford psychologist Carol Dweck, focuses on promoting an environment of continuous learning and openness to growth and change. Mindset theory, more broadly, posits that there are two essential mindsets, or frameworks, from which we operate: a “fixed mindset” where one believes that ability is predominantly innate and a “growth mindset where one believes that ability is in large part learned. We examine the dynamic of instilling a growth mindset within an organization, and the activation effect of injecting growth mindset-focused activities within a larger employee engagement initiative.Selected ReferencesCaniëls, M. Abstract:
A Nd:YAG pumped frequency-doubled dye laser is used to excite X2π, v″ = 1, N′ OH radicals to a specific N' state of A2Σ+, v′ = 1. OH radicals are produced in a differentially pumped flow system by the reaction of H atoms produced by a microwave discharge in a molecular hydrogen and NO2. The total energy transfer rate, kT, is determined by monitoring the time decay of single rotational fluorescence lines as a function of colliding gas pressure. Using nitrogen as a colliding gas, kT is found to decrease from (6.4 ± 0.3) × 10−10 cm3 for excitation in N' = 0 to (4.0 ± 0.2) × 10−10 cm3/s for excitation in N' = 4. In the absence of colliding gas, the fluorescence lifetime of OH is observed to lengthen in regular fashion with increasing N' from 594 ns for N' = 0 excitation to 667 ns for N' = 4 excitation. The kT is made up of the electronic quenching rate, the rotational energy transfer rate, and the vibrational energy crossover rate. The vibrational crossover rate is determined for specific N' excitations by integrating the rotationally resolved 0 → 0 and 1 → 1 vibrational bands in OH fluorescence spectra between 3060 and 3180 Å as a function of N' and colliding gas pressure. The electronic quenching rate is determined by monitoring the time decay of OH fluorescence in the 1 → 1 vibrational band as a function of colliding gas pressure.

Abstract:
The successful design and operation of a fluidized bed combustor requires the ability to control and mitigate ash-related problems. The main ash-related problem of biomass firing boiler is agglomeration. The fluidized bed boiler with steam capacity of 66 t/h (4 MPa, 440 °C) was started up at the Archangelsk Paper-Pulp-Plant in 2001. This boiler was manufactured by the Russian companies “Energosofin” and “Belenergomash” and installed instead of the existing boiler with mechanical grate. Some constructional elements and steam drum of existing boiler remained unchanged. The primary air fan was installed past the common air fan, which supply part of the air into 24 secondary air ports. First operating period shows that the bed material is expanded and then operator should increase the primary air rate, and the boiler efficiency dramatically decreases. This paper presents some results of our investigations of fuel, bed and fly ash chemical compositions and other characteristics. Special experiments were carried out to optimize the bed drain flow rate. The influence of secondary air supply improvement on mixing with the main flow and boiler efficiency are given.

Abstract:
This study aimed to determine the characteristics of activated charcoal from mangroves resulting from pyrolysis and activation with 3M KCl using Fourier Transform Infra-Red (FTIR), X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) and ash content analysis and to determine the ratio of Pb, Fe and Cd metal content in river water before and after filtered with activated charcoal. The results of the FTIR test for charcoal from mangroves resulting from pyrolysis and activation with KCl showed the presence of O-H, C=C, C-H, C-N and C-Cl groups as additional groups that appeared after the activation process. The results of XRD analysis show that the lattice parameter (α) can be calculated, namely in pyrolysis mangrove charcoal = 5.79 and charcoal from pyrolysis and activation mangrove wood = 5.88. The results show that there is a change in the distance between the crystal planes after activation, with the known value of, the results of d-spacing 3 strong peaks are 3.39 , 2.94 and 5.88 . The results of the analysis of the ash content are 15.4% and exceed the maximum percentage that has been determined, because there are still impurities attached to the carbon surface. The results of the analysis using Atomic Absorbtion Spectrophotometry (AAS) showed that there were differences in the levels of Pb, Fe and Cd in river water before and after being filtered with activated charcoal. There was a decrease in Pb levels from points 1,2 and 3 as much as 73%, 49% and 55.23%. Meanwhile, Fe metal decreased from points 1, 2 and 3 as much as 58%, 66% and 81%. And on Cd there was a decrease of 44%, 61% and 92%. From these percentage results, activated charcoal from mangroves can be said to be effective because it can absorb metals in river water. Pb metal in river water in East Kombos Manado City has passed the concentration specified in Government Regulation of the Republic of Indonesia No. 22 of 2021, Class II Water Quality Standards.

Martelli, Emanuele, Marco Girardi, and Paolo Chiesa. "Breaking 70% Net Electric Combined Cycle Efficiency With CMC Gas Turbine Blades." In ASME Turbo Expo 2022: Turbomachinery Technical Conference and Exposition. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/gt2022-81118.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract This work focuses on the optimal cycle design criteria for heavy duty gas turbines employing CMC blades. A combined cycle model with detailed description of the cooled gas turbine is used to determine the optimal Turbine Inlet Temperature and pressure ratio for two values of maximum allowed CMC wall temperatures (1300, 1500 °C). Results indicate that the maximum efficiency of the combined cycle is achieved with pressure ratio above 60, posing the need of adopting two shafts for the gas turbine and high temperature materials for the high-pressure compressor. Net electric efficiency above 70% (LHV basis) can be approached with CMC blade wall temperatures of 1300 °C (TIT = 2000 °C) and efficiency values approaching 72% with CMC blade wall temperatures of 1500 °C and TIT of 2200 °C. Compared to current H-class gas turbines, the simple cycle efficiency increases by about 10 percentage points (> 53% vs. 43% LHV basis) and the net specific work/net power output by 66%–110% depending on the pressure ratio and TIT. The most critical challenge to achieve such performance appears to be the temperature gradient across the blade wall and the temperature capability (maximum surface temperature and temperature gradient) of the blade coatings.
