Abstract:
ABSTRACT ST-246 is a novel, potent orthopoxvirus egress inhibitor that is being developed to treat pathogenic orthopoxvirus infections of humans. This phase I, double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled single ascending dose study (first time with humans) was conducted to determine the safety, tolerability, and pharmacokinetics of ST-246 in healthy human volunteers. ST-246 was administered in single oral doses of 500, 1,000, and 2,000 mg to fasting healthy volunteers and 1,000 mg to nonfasting healthy volunteers. ST-246 was generally well tolerated with no serious adverse events, and no subject was withdrawn from the study due to ST-246. The most commonly reported drug-related adverse event was neutropenia, which was found, upon further analysis, not to be treatment related. ST-246 was readily absorbed following oral administration with mean times to maximum concentration from 2 h to 3 h. Absorption was greater in nonfasting volunteers than in fasting volunteers. Administration of ST-246 resulted in exposure levels predicted to be sufficient for inhibiting orthopoxvirus replication compared to exposure levels in nonhuman primates in which ST-246 protected animals from lethal orthopoxvirus infection.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT ST-246 was evaluated for activity against cowpox virus (CV), vaccinia virus (VV), and ectromelia virus (ECTV) and had an in vitro 50% effective concentration (EC50) of 0.48 μM against CV, 0.05 μM against VV, and 0.07 μM against ECTV. The selectivity indices were >208 and >2,000 for CV and VV, respectively. The in vitro antiviral activity of ST-246 was significantly greater than that of cidofovir, which had an EC50 of 41.1 μM against CV and 29.2 μM against VV, with selectivity indices of >7 and >10, respectively. ST-246 administered once daily by oral gavage to mice infected intranasally with CV beginning 4 h or delayed until 72 h postinoculation was highly effective when given for a 14-day duration using 100, 30, or 10 mg/kg of body weight. When 100 mg/kg of ST-246 was administered to VV-infected mice, a duration of 5 days was sufficient to significantly reduce mortality even when treatment was delayed 24 h postinoculation. Viral replication in liver, spleen, and kidney, but not lung, of CV- or VV-infected mice was reduced by ST-246 compared to levels for vehicle-treated mice. When 100 mg/kg of ST-246 was given once daily to mice infected by the intranasal route with ECTV, treatment for 10 days prevented mortality even when treatment was delayed up to 72 h after viral inoculation. Viral replication in target organs of ECTV-infected mice was also reduced.

Abstract:
Abstract In murine schistosomiasis, H-2k CBA and C3H mice develop severe CD4 T cell(CD4) mediated liver pathology(LP) and a high Th1/17 response very focused on a single epitope of the parasite egg antigen Sm-p40(p234-246). Low pathology C57BL/6 mice do not recognize this antigen. A possible reason for this result is that p234-246 exacerbated dominance(ED) polarizes the anti-egg response causing severe LP. To test this hypothesis we: a)analyze the LP of SJL mice whose H-2 haplotype also exhibit ED of a single Sm-p40 epitope and b) analyze the LP of CBA mice whose p234-246 ED was neutralized by an epitope cocktail. Methodology:H-2s Sm-p40 restriction pattern was determined with the rankpep software. SJL LP was documented by comparative liver morphometric analysis(LMA) of infected CBA, C57BL/6 and SJL mice euthanized 7 weeks-post-infection(wpi). The effect of p234-246 ED neutralization was studied by LMA of 3 groups of infected CBA mice euthanized at 7wpi. The 1st group was treated with an emulsion of adjuvant and 4 synthetic epitopes designed to compete for I-Ak with an affinity equal or higher than p234-246, the 2nd was treated with adjuvant alone and the 3rd was not treated. Results:LMA shows that SJL mice develop as severe a LP as CBA mice and that p234-246 ED neutralization prevents development of severe LP. Conclusion:These results show that ED may be pathogenic in CD4 mediated diseases and that its neutralization may be an effective therapeutic strategy that deserves exploration.

Abstract:
A single unattached kinetochore can delay anaphase onset in mitotic tissue culture cells (Rieder, C.L., A. Schultz, R. Cole, G. Sluder. 1994. J. Cell Biol. 127:1301–1310). Kinetochores in vertebrate cells contain multiple binding sites, and tension is generated at kinetochores after attachment to the plus ends of spindle microtubules. Checkpoint component Mad2 localizes selectively to unattached kinetochores (Chen, R.-H., J.C. Waters, E.D. Salmon, and A.W. Murray. 1996. Science. 274:242–246; Li, Y., and R. Benezra. Science. 274: 246–248) and disappears from kinetochores by late metaphase, when chromosomes are properly attached to the spindle. Here we show that Mad2 is lost from PtK1 cell kinetochores as they accumulate microtubules and re-binds previously attached kinetochores after microtubules are depolymerized with nocodazole. We also show that when kinetochore microtubules in metaphase cells are stabilized with taxol, tension at kinetochores is lost. The phosphoepitope 3f3/2, which has been shown to become dephosphorylated in response to tension at the kinetochore (Nicklas, R.B., S.C. Ward, and G.J. Gorbsky. 1995. J. Cell Biol. 130:929–939), is phosphorylated on all 22 kinetochores after tension is reduced with taxol. In contrast, Mad2 only localized to an average of 2.6 out of the 22 kinetochores in taxol-treated PtK1 cells. Therefore, loss of tension at kinetochores occupied by microtubules is insufficient to induce Mad2 to accumulate on kinetochores, whereas unattached kinetochores consistently bind Mad2. We also found that microinjecting antibodies against Mad2 caused cells arrested with taxol to exit mitosis after ∼12 min, while uninjected cells remained in mitosis for at least 6 h, demonstrating that Mad2 is necessary for maintenance of the taxol-induced mitotic arrest. We conclude that kinetochore microtubule attachment stops the Mad2 interactions at kinetochores which are important for inhibiting anaphase onset.

Abstract:
Theoretical background: In 2022, the European Commission’s intensive efforts to revise and enhance the Non-Financial Reporting Directive (NFRD) from 2014 resulted in the proposal of Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) and the exposure draft on ESRS EDs (EFRAG Sustainable Reporting Standards Exposure Drafts). The ESRS drafts for public consultation presented the mandatory concepts and principles for sustainability reporting under the CSRD. The implementation of corporate sustainability is closely related to reporting that stimulates robustness of companies’ commitment to sustainability, and sustainable long-term actions taken by companies. Environment is priority, however, having in mind sophisticated environmental performance indicators, it is governance that ensures stakeholders whether the company exercises the sustainable obligations effectively. Purpose of the article: The purpose of the article is to determine EFRAG draft standards compliance with the Warsaw Stock Exchange best practices and Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) standards, and an assessment of WIG-20 reporting practices regarding EFRAG draft standards. The main research question was whether and to what extent WIG-20 companies meet the sustainable reporting exposure drafts on governance matters proposed by EFRAG. Research methods: The study method was desk-based research using the gathered corporate data. The assumptions on the importance of governance matters were supported by VOSviewer analysis of Scopus bibliometric database analysis. Main findings: The results of the study have shown that the scope and level of reported disclosures by WIG-20 companies – that are best performing and positive toward sustainability – is insufficient and reporting practices do not meet proposed EFRAG draft standards. The study contributes to scarce research addressing the sustainability reporting approach. It provides a study of the governance maters regarding draft governance reporting ESRS drafts.

ABSTRACT In experiments conducted in a growth chamber, the chronological time and the accumulated degree-days were determined for the duration of incubation, latent and infectious periods of Phakopsora pachyrhizi cultivars BRSGO 7560 and BRS 246 RR. Detached soybean leaflets were placed in gerbox-type acrylic boxes and inoculated with 20 x 103 uredospores/mL. The study was conducted at 12-h photoperiod and temperatures of 10ºC, 15ºC, 22ºC, 25ºC and 30°C for 30 days. Lesions and uredia/cm2were evaluated and the number of uredia per lesion was quantified after the beginning of sporulation. The sporulation potential was also quantified for cultivars BRSGO 7560 and BRS 246 RR. The steps of the infection process can be quantified based on both the chronological time and the accumulated heat. The cultivar BRSGO 7560 produced 4,012.8 spores/cm2 and BRS 246 RR, 7,348.4 uredospores/cm2. The largest number of uredia was produced at 25ºC in both cultivars; however, BRS 246 RR presented 372.7 uredia/cm2 and BRSGO 7560, 231.6 uredia/cm2. At 10ºC and 30°C, leaf infection did not occur in both cultivars.

Abstract:
This thesis argues that the transition from traditional Roman ideas of sexual behaviour to idealised Christian sexual behaviour was a reactionary process, for which the period from AD 390 to AD 520 offers a crucial key stage. During this era, the Roman West underwent significant socio-political changes, resulting in warfare and violent conflict, which created a pressurised and traumatic environment for people who endured them. In this context, the rhetoric of divine punishment for sinful behaviour was strongly linked with sexual acts, causing ideas on sexual mores to develop. The thesis highlights three key aspects of these developments. Firstly, warfare necessitated changes in Christian doctrines on marriages and rape, resulting from collective and cultural trauma. Secondly, sexually impure acts of incest and prostitution were defiling to the religious collective yet the consequences of these were negotiated on a case-to-case basis, reflecting adaptation. Thirdly, traditional Roman ideas of polygyny and homosexual acts overrode Christian ideas on the same. After discussing these three aspects, this work offers a revised interpretation of Salvian of Marseilles’s De gubernatione Dei to illuminate the purpose of the sexual polemic contained in his work – a task that no existing scholarship has attempted to undertake. Daily realities and conflicts drove discourses on sexual mores forwards, and this thesis outlines how this occurred in practice, arguing that attitudes to sex were deeply rooted in secular contexts and were reactionary in nature. This examination of attitudes to sexual mores reveals a re-moulding of pre-existing Roman cultural norms, rather than a revolutionising Christian overtake. The thesis concludes that the ‘Christianisation’ of late Roman society was a process conditioned by contemporary events and concerns, which contributes to interpretations on the dynamics of cultural change in the late antique era.

Abstract:

Gateways handle many functions in todays telecommunication networks and as the move towards IP-based telecommunication networks continue, their importance is growing. Many vendors offer a tiered architecture where logic is separated from the gateways for easy extensibility. Currently gateway control and gateway communication is handled using the H.248 protocol. As more and more equipment starts moving over to SIP based communication there has been a degree of interest in homogenizing the system and possibly replacing the H.248 protocol with a SIP based protocol.

In this paper we examine how the communication between a gateway controller and gateway may look if implemented in SIP. We also examine the performance characteristics of the proposed protocol from both an execution time, communication size and memory consumption perspective. Implementation and tests will be performed using a language, developed by Ericsson specifically for the telecommunication sector, called Erlang. The protocol designed herein is not intended for production use and is only examined for viability. It is NOT the official stance of Ericsson that H.248 will be replaced with the protocol or any like it.

Abstract:
El presente trabajo de tesis tiene como objetivo diseñar un congelador de placas para pescado de capacidad 240 kg/h que pueda ser fabricado y ensamblado con la tecnología disponible en la industria nacional y que cuente con un sistema de refrigeración autónomo. Para el diseño del presente proyecto se consideraron las propiedades termofísicas de la especie caballa (meckerel), pues es de la única especie de la cual existe información confiable y disponible. Asimismo, se utilizó como metodología la norma de diseño VDI 2221 y 2225, dividiendo el diseño de la máquina en dos dominios: refrigeración y mecánico. En adición, se realizó la ingeniería básica y selección de componentes eléctricos e instrumentación. Como referencia para el cálculo y selección de equipos y mecanismos se utilizó lo impartido en los cursos de Termodinámica, Mecánica de Fluidos, Transferencia de Calor, Resistencia de Materiales, Elementos de Máquinas y Electricidad, siendo estos conocimientos complementados con normas técnicas de la American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), los manuales de la American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) y recomendaciones de diversos fabricantes de máquinas. Finalmente, se obtuvo como resultado del diseño un congelador de placas en disposición horizontal accionado a través de un mecanismo hidráulico. El sistema de refrigeración utiliza R-404a y es capaz de congelar, hasta una temperatura de -26 °C en el centro, 600 kg de pescado tipo caballa en un tiempo de 2.36 horas, con dimensiones generales de 3.5 x 3.5 x 2.7 m, un consumo de agua fría a 5 °C de 13600 kg/h y un consumo eléctrico de 22.0 kW a un voltaje industrial trifásico de 440 VAC. El costo total del proyecto es de USD 73,300.

INTRODUCCIÓ: Les partícules aèries en suspensió i les concentracions dels diòxid de nitrogen i sofre constitueixen els contaminants més preocupants i amb major impacte en la salut pública. Hi ha estudis que relacionen la contaminació atmosfèrica amb l’augment de la pressió arterial a la consulta, però no hi ha cap estudi que relacioni contaminació atmosfèrica amb pressió arterial ambulatòria de 24h. OBJECTIUS: Objectiu principal: Conèixer la relació entre la pressió arterial ambulatòria mesurada amb MAPA de 24h i els contaminants atmosfèrics que es mesuren regularment (PM10, PM2,5, NO2 i SO2) i el de mesura més recent (partícules ultrafines, PUF) a l’àrea metropolitana de Barcelona. Objectius secundaris: 1.- Quantificar els efectes de la contaminació atmosfèrica sobre els valors de PA mitjana diària, diürna i nocturna. 2.- Conèixer la relació entre temperatura ambiental i PA ambulatòria. 3.- Avaluar l’associació entre contaminació atmosfèrica i pressió arterial clínica. MATERIAL I MÈTODES: Disseny. Estudi observacional de mesures temporals i geogràfiques de pacients individuals (case-time series design). Àmbit de l’estudi. Centres d’Atenció Primària i Unitats d’Hipertensió de l’àrea metropolitana de Barcelona. Població diana. Hipertensos ≥ 18 anys, sense tractament farmacològic, amb una primera MAPA vàlida registrada a la base de dades CARDIORISC de la SEH-LELHA durant el període 2005-2014. Variables incloses a partir de CARDIORISC, de les dades cedides pel Departament de Territori i Sostenibilitat de la Generalitat de Catalunya i per l’Institut de Diagnòstic Ambiental i Estudis de l’Aigua del Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas a Barcelona. Anàlisi de regressió de series temporals ajustada per variables individuals (sociodemogràfiques i patologia concomitant) i ecològiques (temperatura ambiental). RESULTATS: Inclusió de 2.888 pacients. Edat mitjana de 54,3 (DE 14,6) anys i un 50,1% són dones. Presenten un IMC de 28,8 kg/m2 (DE 6,4) i un 16,9% de la mostra és fumadora. La pressió arterial (PA) de 24 h és de 128,0 (12,7)/77,4 (9,7) mmHg i el 46,1% de la mostra està ben controlada. Les dones presenten una PA més disminuïda respecte els homes (tant per MAPA com per PA clínica); es descriu un augment de PA Sistòlica (PAS) amb l’edat; també un augment de PA (totes les PAS i PAD nit i clínica) a major IMC; els fumadors presenten valors de PA més elevada que els no fumadors i es veu una disminució de la PAD (tant per MAPA com clínica) en associació amb DM2. La temperatura ambiental (Ta) mitjana de l’estudi presenta una relació no lineal inversa, amb un punt de inflexió als 15ºC, per tots els valors de PAS. En la PAD, l’augment d’un grau de Ta, s’associa a una disminució de la PAD 24h de forma significativa. Per cada increment de 10 µg/m3 de PM10 s’observa un augment de 1,37 mmHg de la PAD 24h i de 1,48 mmHg de la PAD diürna, de forma estadísticament significativa. Per cada increment d‘1 µg/m3 de PUF la PAD 24h augmenta en 1,46 mmHg i la PAD diürna en 1,56 mmHg, de forma estadísticament significativa. No s’ha trobat relació estadística entre els contaminants PM2,5, NO2 i SO2 amb cap valor de la MAPA. Tampoc s’ha trobat relació estadística entre cap contaminant i PA clínica. CONCLUSIONS: La concentració de PM10 i PUF a la nostra àrea d’estudi s’associa de forma significativa a un augment de les PAD 24h i PAD diürna. Però no s’ha vist associació entre els contaminants de PM2,5, NO2 ni SO2 i la PA, tant per MAPA com per clínica. Per cada grau que augmenta la temperatura ambiental a l’àrea metropolitana de Barcelona, la PA sistòlica i diastòlica disminueix en totes les situacions (24h, diürna, nocturna i clínica).
INTRODUCTION: Air particulate matters and nitrogen dioxide and sulfur dioxide are the most worrying pollutants, with the greatest impact on public health. There are studies that relate atmospheric pollution with the increase in office blood pressure, but there is no study that relates air pollution with 24h ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM). OBJECTIVES: the main objective is to know the relationship between ABPM and atmospheric pollutants that are measured regularly (PM10, PM2,5, NO2 and SO2) and the most recent measurement (ultrafine particles, PUF) in the metropolitan area of Barcelona. Secondary objectives are to quantify the effects of atmospheric pollution on daily, daytime and nighttime average blood pressure values. To know the relationship between ambient temperature and ABPM. To evaluate the association between air pollution and clinical blood pressure. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Design. Observational study of temporary and geographic measures of individual patients (case-time series design). Area of ​​study. Primary Care Centers and Hypertension Units in the metropolitan area of ​​Barcelona. Population. Hypertensive patients ≥ 18 years, without pharmacological treatment, with a first valid ABPM registered in the CARDIORISC database of the SEH-LELHA during the period 2005-2014. Variables included from CARDIORISC, from ​​the data provided by the Departament de Territori i Sostenibilitat de la Generalitat de Catalunya and by the Institute of Environmental Diagnosis and Water Studies of the Superior Council of Scientific Research in Barcelona. Analysis of regression of temporal series adjusted by individual variables (sociodemographic and concomitant pathology) and ecological (ambient temperature). RESULTS: Inclusion of 2,888 patients. Mean age of 54,3 (DS 14,6) years and 50,1% are women. Body Mass Index (BMI) 28.8 kg/m2 (DS 6.4) and 16.9% of the sample smokes. Baseline 24h ABPM 128.0 (12.7) / 77.4 (9.7) mmHg and 46.1% of the sample is well controlled. Women have low BP compared to men (both ABPM and office BP); an increase in Systolic BP (SBP) with age is described; also an increase in BP (all SBP and DBP, night and office BP) with higher BMI; smokers have BP values higher than non-smokers and a decrease in DBP (both ABPM and office BP) is seen in association with DM2. There is a non-linear relationship between ambient temperature (Ta) and SBP, with a threshold value at 15°C. In DBP, the increase in a degree of Ta is associated with a decrease in 24h DBP in 0.16 mmHg (p = 0.259), daytime-DBP in 0.18 mmHg (p = 0.021), nighttime-DBP in 0.11 mmHg (p = 0.154) and office DBP in 0.22 mmHg (p = 0.040). For each increase of 10μg/m3 of PM10 an increase of 1.37 mmHg in 24h DBP and 1.48 mmHg in daytime-DBP was observed, statistically significant. For each increase of 1 μg/m3 of PUF 24h DBP increases in 1.46 mmHg and daytime-DBP in 1.56 mmHg, statistically significant. No statistical relationship was found between pollutants PM2.5, NO2 and SO2 with ABPM. No statistical relationship was found between any pollutant and office BP. CONCLUSIONS: The concentration of PM10 and PUF in our area of study is significantly associated with an increase in 24h DBP and daytime-DBP. But there has been no association between pollutants of PM2.5, NO2 and SO2 with BP (ABPM and office BP). For each degree that increases the ambient temperature in the metropolitan area of Barcelona, systolic and diastolic BP decreases in all situations (24h, daytime, nighttime and office BP).

Timing synchronization of optical with electrical signals has been realized recently by using a photoconductive switch in a phase-lock loop (PLL) as an optoelectronic timing discriminator (OETD) or phase detector.1 In this work, we present results on stabilization of the timing fluctuations of a pulse-compressed cw actively mode-locked Nd:Yag laser (82MHz system) by using this technique. Two photoconductive switches were optically activated and operated at the quiescent points of the inverse slopes of the biasing electrical pulse from a comb generator. The difference in the output of the two switches serves as the OETD output. The comb was driven at 246 MHz by a frequency synthesizer serving as the frequency reference. The signal driving the mode-locker was generated by frequency division (by 6) from the reference oscillator such that the laser pulse timing jitter could be suppressed by using a voltage-controlled phase shifter driven by the amplified and filtered output of the OETD. 1. In view of the therapeutic applications of rt-PA it is of interest to investigate whether there is any difference in the lysability between fresh and aged thrombi. The efficiency of fibrinolysis by rt-PA was studied in 3 different ways: In vivo, by measuring the thrombus weight of fresh (1 h) or aged (24 h) thrombi in the carotid artery of rabbits which had been treated with rt-PA (0.4 mg/kg) or saline for 1 h. Ex vivo, by measuring I125-release of in vivo fresh (1 h) and aged (24 h) thrombi (labelled with I125-fibrinogen) suspended in vitro in plasma containing rt-PA (1 μg/ml) ; the thrombi were formed in the jugular vein and the carotid artery of each rabbit. In vitro, by measuring I125-release of fresh (1 h) and aged (6 or 24 h) human native whole blood clots, PPP-clots, PRP-clots and squeezed PPP-clots which were formed and lysed in vitro with rt-PA (1 μg/ml) . In vivo as well as ex vivo rt-PA lysed fresh (1 h) thrombi much better than aged (24 h) thrombi. This difference was more pronounced immediately after the onset of fibrinolysis, but decreased with time. However, in vitro relatively little difference was observed in fibrinolysis efficiency between fresh (1 h) and aged (6 or 24 h) clots; fibrinolysis of these clots was decreased (PPP > whole blood > PRP) with increasing clot retraction, which was almost complete within 1 h. This result was also confirmed when PPP-clots were “retracted” by simply squeezing them just before lysis. Therefore we conclude that a considerable difference in lysis efficiency between fresh and aged thrombi was only observed when thrombi were formed and aged in vivo. This difference was less pronounced with increasing fibrinolysis time.

Abstract:
The use of pretreatments for 24 h prior to storage, under anaerobic condtions, or in the presence of the natural metabolic products, acetaldehyde (AA) and ethanol, to delay fruit ripening, was found to be effective with several climacteric fruits, among them avocado, mango, peach and tomato. The delay in ripening of avocado, peach and tomato was accompanied by inhibition of ethylene production and of fruit softening. The maintenance of fruit firmness was associated with a decrease in the activities of cell-wall-degrading enzymes, including endoglucanases (Cx), polygalacturonases (PG) and b-galactosidases. In peaches the AA- and N2-treated fruits were firmer after 3 weeks storage and contained higher amount of insoluble pectin than untreated controls. We showed that AA vapors are able to inhibit ripening, ethylene production and ethylene induction in the presence of 1-amino-cyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid (ADD) in avocado and mango tissue. Ethylene induced by ACC is taken as an indicator of ACC oxidase activity. ACC oxidase activity in AA-treated avocado fruit was much lower than in the untreated fruit. In carnation flowers very little ethylene was produced by ethanol-treated flowers, and the normal increases in ACC content and ACC oxidase activity were also suppressed. Using kinetic studies and inhibitors of alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH), we showed that AA, not ethanol, was the active molecule in inhibiting ripening of tomato fruit. Application of anaerobiosis or anaerobic metabolites was effective in reduction of chilling injury (CI) in various plant tissues. Pretreatment with a low-O2 atmosphere reduced CI symptoms in avocado; this effect was associated with higher content of the free sylfhydryl (SH) group, and induction of the detoxification enzymes, catalase and peroxidase. Application of AA maintained firmer and brighter pulp tissue (non-oxidative), which was associated with higher free SH content, lower ethylene and ACC oxidase activities, and higher activities of catalase and peroxidase. Ethanol was found to reduce CI in other plant tissue. In roots of 24-h-old germinated cucumber seeds, exposure to 0.4-M ethanol shock for 4 h reduced chilling-induced ion leakage. In cucumber cotyledons it appears that alcohols may reduce CI by inducing stomata closure. In cotyledon discs held in N2 at 10C for 1 day, there accumulated sufficient endogenously synthesized ethanol to confer tolerance to chilling at 2.5C for 5 days.

Review question / Objective: We conduct to perform a network meta-analysis to determine the better analgesic efficacy and safety of ESPB in patients undergoing what kind of surgery. Following the PICOS framework, we identified randomized controlled trials (RCT) the patients applied ESPB with different types of surgery compared with either non-block care or blocks. We hypothesized that the ESPB would be superior to non-block care but not inferior to other blocks in thoracic and breast surgeries compared with other types of surgery. In terms of postoperative 24 h opioid consumption (intravenous morphine equivalent) and other analgesic makers, including pain scores at rest and movement, first night sleep quality, postoperative vomiting/nausea, and block-related complications.

Abstract:
The War in the Pacific National Historical Park (WAPA), a protected area managed by the National Park Service (NPS), was established "to commemorate the bravery and sacrifice of those participating in the campaigns of the Pacific Theater of World War II and to conserve and interpret outstanding natural, scenic, and historic values on the island of Guam." Coral reef systems present in the park represent a vital element of Guam?s cultural, traditional, and economical heritage, and as such, are precious and in need of conservation. To facilitate the management of these resources, NPS determined that a scleractinian (stony coral) species survey was necessary to establish a baseline for existing coral communities and other important factors for conservation. EnviroScience, Inc. performed a survey of stony coral species, coral habitat, and current evidence of stressors at WAPA?s H?gat and Asan Units in 2022. This report summarizes these findings from a management perspective and compares its findings to previous survey data from 1977 and 1999 (Eldridge et al. 1977; Amesbury et al. 1999). WAPA is located on the tropical island of Guam, located on the west-central coast of the island, and encompasses 2,037 acres. Underwater resources are a significant component of the park, as 1,002 acres consists of water acres. The park is comprised of seven units, of which two of these, the H?gat and Asan Beach Units, include all the oceanic water acres for the park. The H?gat Beach Unit (local spelling, formerly known as ?Agat?) is located at the south-west portion of the park and consists of 38 land acres and 557 water acres (NPS 2003). The Asan Beach Unit consists of 109 acres of land and 445 water acres (NPS 2003). A current baseline for existing coral communities and other important factors for conservation necessitates the need for up-to-date data on the location, presence, relative abundance, and present health of corals. Park managers need this updated data to determine where and how to best focus conservation priorities and identify restoration opportunities. Management actions in park reef areas informed by this inventory included identifying locations where there were: high rates of sedimentation; high coral biomass; rare or threatened species, with a priority given to species endemic to Guam and listed as ?threatened? under the U.S. Endangered Species Act (ESA; Acropora globiceps, A. retusa, A. speciosa, and Seriatopora aculeata); coral persistence and decline, disease and/or nuisance species, including the crown-of-thorns starfish (Acanthaster cf. solaris, ?COTS?) and the sponge Terpios hoshinota; and bleached areas. All work carried out was in accordance with the NPS statement of work (SOW) requirements, which involved a quantitative inventory using both new and pre-existing transects. The resulting transects totaled 61 (including the four from the 1999 study), each measuring 50 meters in length and distributed across depths of up to 50 feet. Divers took photo-quadrat samples covering an area of approximately 9 m?, encompassing 50 photo-quadrats of dimensions 0.50 m x 0.36 m (n=50). The collective area surveyed across all 61 transects amounted to ~549 m?. Additionally, a qualitative search was conducted to enhance documentation of coral species that have limited distribution and might not be captured by transects, along with identifying harmful species and stressors. Timed roving diver coral diversity surveys were carried out at a total of 20 sites occurring within the waters of WAPA, including eight sites at the H?gat unit and 12 sites at the Asan unit. The findings from this report reveal significant disparities in benthic cover compositions between H?gat and Asan units. The H?gat unit exhibits high abundances of turf algae and unconsolidated sediment while the Asan beach unit presents a different scenario, with hard coral as the dominant benthic cover, followed closely by crustose coralline algae (CCA). The Asan unit is also more difficult to access from shore or boat relative to H?gat which provides that unit some protection from human influences. The Asan beach unit's prevalence of hard coral, CCA, and colonizable substrate suggests a more favorable environment for reef growth and the potential benefits of maintaining robust coral cover in the area. These distinct differences in benthic communities highlight the contrasting ecological dynamics and habitats of the two study areas. Across both H?gat and Asan beach unit transects, a total of 56 hard coral species were recorded from 27 genera, with 44 species recorded from the H?gat unit and 48 species recorded from the Asan unit. Of the four historical transects surveyed in the Asan unit from 1999, three experienced declines in percent coral cover (17.38-78.72%), while the fourth had an increase (10.98%). During the timed roving diver coral diversity surveys, a total of 245 hard coral species, including 241 scleractinian coral species representing 49 genera and 4 non-scleractinian coral species representing 4 genera were recorded. Uncertainties related to coral identification, unresolved boundaries between morphospecies, differences in taxonomists' perspectives, and the rapidly evolving state of coral taxonomy have significant implications for species determinations during coral diversity surveys. While the recent surveys have provided valuable insights into coral diversity in WAPA waters, ongoing taxonomic research and collaboration among experts will be essential to obtain a more comprehensive and accurate understanding of coral biodiversity in the region. Of the several ESA coral species that were searched for among the H?gat and Asan beach units, Acropora retusa was the only coral species found among quantitative transects (n=2) and A. globiceps was observed during coral diversity surveys. Acropora speciosa, which was dominant in the upper seaward slopes in 1977, is now conspicuously absent from all the surveys conducted in 2022 (Eldredge et al., 1977). The disappearance and reduction of these once-dominant species underscores the urgency of implementing conservation measures to safeguard the delicate balance of Guam's coral reefs and preserve the diversity and ecological integrity of these invaluable marine ecosystems. Other formerly common or locally abundant species were infrequently encountered during the diversity surveys, including Acropora monticulosa, A. sp. ?obtusicaulis?, A. palmerae, Stylophora sp. ?mordax?, Montipora sp. ?pagoensis?, and Millepora dichotoma. Significant bleaching-associated mortality was recorded for these species, most of which are restricted to reef front/margin zones exposed to moderate-to-high levels of wave energy. Sedimentation was present in both H?gat and the Asan units, though it was more commonly encountered in H?gat transects. While significant portions of the reef area within the WAPA H?gat unit are in poor condition due to a variety of stressors, some areas still hosted notable coral communities, which should be a potential focus for park management to prevent further degradation. There is a need for more effective management of point source pollution concerns, particularly when subpar wastewater treatment or runoff from areas with potential pollution or sediment-laden water is flowing from nearby terrestrial environments. Future monitoring efforts should aim to establish a framework that facilitates a deeper understanding of potential point source pollution incidents. This would empower park managers to collaborate with adjacent communities, both within and outside of park boundaries, to mitigate the localized impacts of pollution (McCutcheon and McKenna, 2021). COTS were encountered during transect surveys as well as in coral diversity surveys. including along the upper reef front/reef margin at site Agat-CS-2. The frequency of these observations, particularly in the WAPA H?gat unit and where stress-susceptible corals are already uncommonly encountered, raise concern about the ability of the populations of these coral species to recover following acute disturbance events, and calls in to question the ability of some of these species to persist in WAPA waters, and in Guam?s waters more broadly. More frequent crown-of-thorns control efforts, even if only a handful of sea stars are removed during a single effort, may be required to prevent further loss to vulnerable species. There were several documented incidents of Terpios hoshinota covering large sections of branching coral in the reef flat along transects, but it is still unclear how detrimental this sponge is to the overall reef system. There is a concern that elevated levels of organic matter and nutrients in the water, such as those resulting from sewage discharge or stormwater runoff, could lead to increased Terpios populations (De Voogd et al. 2013). Consequently, it is important to track populations in known areas of sedimentation and poor water quality. The presence of unique species at single survey sites within the study areas underscores the ecological importance of certain locations. Some species are known to occur in other locations in Guam, while a few may be limited to specific sites within WAPA waters. These differences are likely influenced by environmental and biological factors such as poor water quality, severe heat stress events, chronic predation by crown-of-thorns sea stars, disease, and reduced herbivore populations. These factors collectively shape the condition of the benthic community, leading to variations in species distribution and abundance across the study sites. Documenting coral stress and identifying potentially harmful species allows for proactive management strategies to prevent the establishment of nuisance or detrimental species while populations are still manageable. Updated data on the location, presence, relative abundance, and health of corals is essential for park managers to prioritize conservation efforts and identify restoration opportunities effectively. Observations from this report raise concerns about the health and resilience of coral ecosystems in the H?gat unit and emphasize the need for knowledge of local factors that shape benthic community structure. Understanding the drivers responsible for these variations is crucial for effective conservation and management strategies to preserve the ecological balance and overall health of coral reefs in both units. Continued monitoring efforts will be critical in assessing long-term trends and changes in benthic cover and enabling adaptive management approaches to safeguard these valuable marine ecosystems in the face of ongoing environmental challenges.

Current dam discharge patterns in Noxon Rapids Reservoir reduce concentration and exposure times (CET) of herbicides used for aquatic plant management. Herbicide applications during periods of low dam discharge may increase herbicide CETs and improve efficacy. Applications of rhodamine WT dye were monitored under peak (736 to 765 m³ s⁻¹) and minimum (1.4 to 2.8 m³ s⁻¹) dam discharge patterns to quantify water-exchange processes. Whole-plot dye half-life under minimal discharge was 33 h, a 15-fold increase compared with the dye treatment during peak discharge. Triclopyr concentrations measured during minimum discharge within the treated plot ranged from 214 ± 25 to 1,243 ± 36 μgL⁻¹ from 0 to 48 h after treatment (HAT), respectively. Endothall concentrations measured during minimum discharge in the same plot ranged from 164 ± 78 to 2,195 ± 1,043 μgL⁻¹ from 0 to 48 HAT, respectively. Eurasian watermilfoil (Myriophyllum spicatum L.) occurrence in the treatment plot was 66%, 8%, and 14% during pretreatment, 5 wk after treatment (WAT), and 52 WAT, respectively. Myriophyllum spicatum occurrence in the nontreated plot was 68%, 71%, and 83% during pre-treatment, 5 WAT, and 52 WAT, respectively. Curlyleaf pondweed (Potamogeton crispus L.) occurrence in the treatment plot was 29%, 0%, and 97% during pretreatment, 5 WAT, and 52 WAT, respectively. Potamogeton crispus increased from 24% to 83% at 0 WAT to 52 WAT, respectively, in the nontreated plot. Native species richness declined from 3.3 species per point to 2.1 in the treatment plot in the year of treatment but returned to pretreatment numbers by 52 WAT. Native species richness did not change during the study in the nontreated reference plot. Herbicide applications during periods of low flow can increase CETs and improve control, whereas applications during times of high-water flow would shorten CETs and could result in reduced treatment efficacy.

У статті викладено результати емпіричного дослідження особливостей становлення глибинного компонента ґендерної ідентичності хлопців у неповній сім’ї в порівнянні з хлопцями із повних. Теоретико-методологічну основу дослідження склали авторські уявлення про ґендер та ґендерну ідентичність, що функціонують у трьох вимірах психічного: глибинному, когнітивному та поведінковому. Розглядаючи глибинний компонент ґендерної ідентичності як переживання відповідності образу Я ґендерному образу, дослідницею було встановлено генезу цього відношення у хлопців в період з молодшого шкільного по юнацький вік в умовах повної та неповної сімей. У представленій роботі вперше опубліковано авторську методику діагностики глибинного компонента ґендерної ідентичності особистості засобами аналізу серії психомалюнків: «Я», «Чоловік», «Жінка», подано бланк методики та описано процедуру підрахунку балів. Спираючись на методи математичного аналізу даних (U-критерій Манна-Уітні, H-критерій Крускала-Уолліса), а також на результати попередніх досліджень, на репрезентативній вибірці у 240 осіб було визначено особливості становлення глибинного компонента ґендерної ідентичності хлопців залежно від того, в якій сім’ї вони виховуються. Зокрема, зроблено висновок про наявність достовірних відмінностей у цьому процесі, пов’язаних із ґендерною асиметрією глибинного виміру психіки хлопців з неповних сімей, тобто з посиленням відповідності образу Я глибинному образу Чоловіка та послабленням відповідності образу Жінки. Узагальнення отриманих даних та даних попередніх досліджень спонукало авторку зробити висновок про регресійні процеси ґендерного змісту в несвідомому юнака з неповної сім’ї.
