Abstract:
<p>The relationship between physical exercise and improvement in specific cognitive domains in children and adolescents who play sport has been recently reported, although the effects on visuospatial abilities have not yet been well explored. This study is aimed at evaluating in school-age children practicing artistic gymnastics the visuospatial memory by using a table version of the Radial Arm Maze (table-RAM) and comparing their performances with those ones who do not play any sport. The visuospatial performances of 14 preadolescent girls practicing artistic gymnastics aged between 7 and 10 years and those of 14 preadolescent girls not playing any sport were evaluated in the table-RAM forced-choice paradigm that allows disentangling short-term memory from working memory abilities. Data showed that the gymnasts obtained better performances than control group mainly in the parameters evaluating working memory abilities, such as within-phase errors and spatial span. Our findings emphasizing the role of physical activity on cognitive performances impel to promote physical exercise in educational and recreational contexts as well as to analyse the impact of other sports besides gymnastics on cognitive functioning.</p>

Abstract:
Elite athletes are competitors who combine in themselves exceptional talent, many years of hard work and distinctive psychological qualities. Highly qualified rhythmic gymnasts do not differ from this definition, as their sports profile includes all these characteristics. The aim of this study is to develop a methodology to create the sports profile of elite competitors in rhythmic gymnastics on the basis of current competitors from the USA, Singapore and Taiwan and to compare the obtained results. This could help us assess the current habits of these gymnasts, the positive or negative impact of those habits on their performance, and the necessary changes that need to be made to optimize the training process. The results of the current study and the statistical data processing from the conducted experiment showed that the three studied teams of elite athletes (total of 63 gymnasts) demonstrated strong commitment and engagement in the training process. Generally, the Singaporean and Taiwanese athletes had difficulties in communication with their coach and lagged behind in the development of technical qualities and mental skills for effective adaptation compared to their colleagues from the United States. At the same time, however, they showed a higher degree of self-awareness for improvement. On the other hand, the athletes from the US demonstrated shortcomings in Consistency in training. The numerical values also showed that some of the US athletes demonstrated limitations in the development of physical qualities which could affect their professional sports development in the future.

Abstract:
Background: Gymnastics is a demanding sport that places unique forces on the upper extremity. The repetitive nature of the sport and the high-impact forces involved may predispose the gymnast to overuse injuries. Risk factors for injuries in gymnastics are not well understood. Purpose/Hypothesis: The purpose of this study was to ascertain whether preseason upper extremity range of motion (ROM) and strength differ between National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I collegiate gymnasts who sustain an in-season upper extremity injury and those who do not. We hypothesized that gymnasts who sustain an upper extremity injury would demonstrate reduced ROM and strength compared with noninjured gymnasts. Study Design: Cohort study; Level of evidence, 3. Methods: Over 4 seasons, from 2014 to 2018, a total of 15 female NCAA Division I collegiate gymnasts underwent preseason upper extremity ROM (shoulder: flexion, internal and external rotation; elbow: extension; wrist: extension) and strength (shoulder: internal and external rotation, and middle and lower trapezius) testing. Overuse upper extremity injuries were tracked in each subsequent season. Gymnasts were dichotomized into injured and noninjured groups, and a 2 × 2 analysis of variance was used to measure differences in preseason measures between the groups as well as within arms (injured vs noninjured arm for the injured group; dominant vs nondominant arm for the noninjured group). Results: A total of 12 overuse upper extremity injuries (10 shoulders; 2 wrist/forearm) occurred during 31 gymnast-seasons. There were no significant interactions for preseason ROM and strength measurements between groups (injured vs noninjured) or within arms (injured and noninjured arm for the injured group; dominant and nondominant arm for the noninjured group; P = .07). Conclusion: Preseason upper extremity ROM and strength were not different between gymnasts who sustained an in-season upper extremity overuse injury and those who did not. It is possible that ROM and strength measures used to screen other overhead athletes may not capture the unique features and requirements of gymnastics. Further, it may be challenging to discern differences in clinical measures of ROM and strength in gymnastics populations owing to the bilateral nature of the sport.

Abstract:
GYMNASTICS AT OLYMPIC GAMES In 2018, The Science of Gymnastics Journal has reached the first decade of existence! We must celebrate, as it is among the few scientific journals specific to one sport! We applaud its 10th anniversary with this special issue for October: Gymnastics at Olympic Games. Rio 2016 has gone, with many memories to recall, the exuberance performance of Simone Biles and Kohei Uchimura in women’s and men’s Artistic Gymnastics; Margarita Mamun in Rhythmic Gymnastics; and Uladzislau Hancharou and Rosanna Maclennan in women’s and men’s Trampoline. They were crowned absolute queens and kings, although there are many others who exhibited their best too. Gymnastics has been growing and evolving at each Olympic Cycle, new skills and combinations abound, and gymnasts seem to have no limits! However, this evolutionary trend in Gymnastics is partly owed to the science, and the gymnastics’ community knows well gymnasts could not reach that far without the support of science. This special edition adds 12 articles to the science of gymnastics from researchers of Brazil, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Germany, Portugal, Slovenia and the United States of America, who cover a variety of topics. Maja Pajek discusses the influence of rules’ changes on the trend of higher difficulties and gymnasts’ specialization in Artistic Gymnastics, while investigating the performance of all-around medalists at individual apparatus finals. Ivan Čuk and Karmen Šibanc present the history of the development of Olympic Games all-around medallists and their success in reaching the podium on individual apparatus in Men’s Artistic Gymnastics. Ivana Montandon and Myrian Nunomura explored the experiences of older gymnasts (over 20 years of age) and the factors that contributed to the prolongation of their sports career in the high level of Women’s Artistic Gymnastics in Portugal. William Sands, Steven Murray, Jeni McNeal, Cindy Slater, and Michael Stone conducted an extended and updated analysis of the sizes trends of U.S. female Olympic artistic gymnasts including the 2012 and 2016 Olympic Games. Flavio Bessi and Jan Pfeifer attempt to set a viable classification system to categorize the rotation habits of high-level artistic gymnasts in the Women’s Individual All Around finalists at the Olympic Games Rio 2016. Catarina Leandro analyzed the evolution of the apparatus difficulty in the Rhythmic Gymnastics in two Olympic cycles, as an attempt to identify eventual factors that could contribute to the improvement of performance in competition. Eliana Toledo, Mateus Oliveira, Maria Letícia Scarabelim and Bianca Assumpção analyzed the impact of the Rhythmic Gymnastics Code of Points (2013-2016) by allowing vocal music in routines, at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. Laurita Schiavon and Bruna Locci analyzed the perspectives of Brazilian gymnasts on the experience of participating in the Olympic Games in the Women’s Artistic Gymnastics competition (1980-2004), using oral history in a qualitative research approach. Caroline Molinari, Vitor Costa, Kamau Monteiro and Myrian Nunomura analyzed the Brazilian Women’s Artistic Gymnastics team participation over the last four cycles (2004-2016) in order to identify and discuss the factors associated to the results and contributions to the development of this sport in the country. Marco Bortoleto, Paulo Carrara and Murilo Roveri analyzed the participation of the Brazilian trampoline gymnastics in the main international events as the World Championships and the Olympic Games. William Sands and Olyvia Donti characterized and analyzed the durations of careers of U.S. elite female gymnasts who had qualified for Olympic Games and World Championships teams and compare these with the team rank from 1936 to 2016. Sunčica Delaš Kalinski, Petra Mandić Jelaska and Almir Atiković examined the relative age effect (RAE) among Women’s and Men’s Artistic Gymnastics in the elite international gymnasts who competed at Olympic Games. After hosting the Olympic Games in our country (Brazil), we are very pleased as guest editors for this special issue. It was a unique opportunity to work with researchers from different countries and fields of study, and to realize how science can support the many gaps still to fulfil in the world of gymnastics. Articles also incited our reflection and foster much thought. We hope you will enjoy every article presented as we did. Special Guest Editors: Laurita Marconi Schiavon Myrian Nunomura

"Kinetic and Kinematic Analysis of Landing during Standing Back Somersault Using Three Technical Arm Swings in Artistic Gymnastics." Abstract:
The crucial criteria when assessing technical performance in artistic gymnastics is the higher elevation of the gymnast’s body and a stable landing (i.e., stick-landing). The purpose of this study was to compare kinetic and kinematic parameters during the landing phase of standing back somersaults (SBS) following three technical arm-swing performed during the preparatory phase in high-level male gymnasts. The three different arm-swing pertain to three “gymnastics schools”, i.e., Russian, Chinese, and Romanian. Six high-level male gymnasts participated in this study. Three arm-swing with different angles (i.e., SBS270°, SBS180°, and SBS90°) were randomly performed. A 3D kinetic and kinematic analysis was conducted. Results showed significant variation in the landing angle (p = 0.009) across the three arm-swing techniques. The SBS90° arm-swing resulted in the closest angle to the vertical. Additionally, the SBS90° arm-swing technique induced the lowest horizontal and vertical force values upon landing compared to the other arm-swing techniques (SBS270°: p = 0.023 and 0.009, respectively; SBS180°: p = 0.004 and 0.080, respectively). The same was noted for the horizontal velocity (p = 0.021) with the lowest values noted for the SBS90° arm-swing technique. However, the best opening angle was observed during the SBS270° technique, since it presented the best vertical displacement. In conclusion, the SBS with a SBS90° arm-swing seems to favor a better absorption of the ground reaction force upon landing by reducing the intensity of the impact with the ground and by affording a landing angle closer to the vertical in high-level male gymnasts.

Abstract:
Spatial orientation skills of gymnasts have been investigated in the past, but their navigation skills have not been well described. For instance, little is known on their performance on triangle completion in the absence of vision. The question is whether gymnasts require less attention than non-gymnasts in executing this task. The aims were to study the impact of dual-task on triangle completion performance and reaction time, and to compare this effect in young adults with or without a gymnastic background. Participants were blindfolded and guided along the first two legs of a 5x5 m right angle triangle and then, independently turned and walked towards the origin of this triangle. After they had stopped, their foot position was marked on the floor and angular deviation and linear distance traveled were measured. In the dualtask, reaction time was gathered during the independent walk with participants responding verbally ‘top’ as fast as possible after a sound signal. Gymnasts were found to have smaller angular deviation and longer linear distance traveled than non-gymnasts. Both groups showed longer reaction time in dual-task compared to baseline in sitting and this increase was similar for both groups. The results suggest that gymnastics training improves the perception and control of direction. However, it does not modify perception of linear displacement, nor the attention required to execute the triangle completion task. In dual-task, other cognitive tasks requiring working memory might have had a larger impact on both navigation errors and cognitive task performance.

Abstract:
Balances in rhythmic gymnastics constitute one of the basic groups of elements. When performing any elements of the program, it is extremely important for a gymnast to maintain the balance of the body and its parts in relation to each other. At the same time, flexibility is considered a fundamental quality in the sport in question, for it determines both selection and training in sports schools. The aim of the study was to substantiate the effectiveness of the training program for young gymnasts at the initial stage of sports training (1st year of training) based on the methodology of developing the ability to balance. The study was conducted from September 2017 to March 2018 on the basis of Sports School of the Olympic Reserve No. 42 (Moscow). The participants were of the same age, which ensures the qualitative homogeneity of the sample. Two groups of participants – experimental and control – were randomly formed. In the experimental group, the training of young gymnasts was conducted according to the methodology, the main provisions of which are: the division of training in the direction of the development of physical qualities in accordance with the schedule; the use of parterre gymnastics exercises as a warm-up; a strictly determined sequence in the development of elements (small poses, concluding exercises, large poses of classical dance, forms of basic equilibria, complicated equilibria, turns). The results of the control tests showed that, in the experimental group, the average increase in the index of ability to equilibria (Δe = 30.8%) was significantly higher than in the control group (Δc = 8.3%). The practical application of the proposed technique is that it can be used in the organization of the training process of young gymnasts at the stage of initial sports training (1st year of training). Currently, when training novice athletes, the emphasis is on the development of the physical quality of flexibility. In the course of the study, the authors found it necessary to answer the question of whether the developed technique had a negative impact on the development of flexibility. They analyzed the flexibility tests used in the selection of gymnasts and saw that the quality of change in both groups was comparable. Therefore, it can be concluded that the developed methodology does not prevent the development of flexibility. The results of this study will serve as a starting point for further research on the problem of the content of the training process of young gymnasts at the stage of initial sports training.

Abstract:
In recent years, many scientific studies have been published about the impact of physical activity and sports activities on adolescent children. Modern lifestyles, modern internet communications, busy school curricula and non-classroom activities reduce adolescents' exercise time, limit their movement as a whole, as well as their participation in sports activities, and thus reduce their overall physical activity. Many scientific researches and observations show the favourable influence of regular sports activities on the physical, functional and personal development of adolescents. The biochemical and biomechanical properties of the musculoskeletal system are being improved.Regular motoric effects on the child’s growing organism lead to significant changes in the somatotypological parameters. Somatotype characterizes the structure of the body at some point in its development. Individual sports and sports disciplines have different effects on the somatotypic characteristics of adolescent athletes. The means and methods used affect different muscle groups differently and prioritise and reduce body fat. That is why we have set ourselves the goal of identifying and comparing the impact of different physical activity on the structural (somatotypological) indicators of 9-10 year old children. To accomplish our goal, we set out the following tasks:1. Determination of somatotype of children 9-10 years of age engaged in gymnastics, rhythmic gymnastics and other sports and sports games2. Comparative analysis of the somatotypological indicators of children involved in different sports at 9-10 years of age.

Abstract:
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to examine the impact of the quality assurance system IKGym (Quality Management System for Gymnastics Clubs), on professionalisation, homogenisation and organisational performance in a sample of gymnastics clubs affiliated to the Flemish Gymnastics Federation. Design/methodology/approach – Data were drawn from a sample of 55 non-profit local Flemish gymnastics clubs, evaluated twice by IKGym between 2004 and 2010. Using a longitudinal analysis of quantitative data of the IKGym data set a paired samples t-test was conducted to measure the impact of IKGym on the sample of gymnastics clubs. Besides, the Pitman-Morgan test was conducted to measure if the gymnastics clubs have become more isomorphic because of IKGym. Findings – First, the results identify different levels of progression towards professionalisation between various quality and performance targets of the gymnastics clubs and depending on the structural design types of these clubs. Second, it was found that during the organisational change the sample of clubs also started to resemble each other more. However, this homogenisation process seems restricted to the organisational management and strategic planning of the clubs and appears especially to clubs belonging to the volunteer structure. Third, the present study also indicates that IKGym has influenced clubs to perform better. Originality/value – IKGym is considered as a pioneering project where a federation stimulated their clubs to professionalise by means of a system of quality assurance. Several federations and sporting leagues (Deutsche Bundesliga, English Premier League; Belgian Basketballiga, etc.) followed this lead and introduced a similar system to evaluate and direct the management of their clubs.

Abstract:
Sports popularity is undeniable, being one of human’s main leisure activities. Its evolution does not go unnoticed, with eSports figuring as the latest upgrade, which has been generating much controversy, with some categorizing it as just an activity while others defend the competitive gaming as a proper sport. Disputes aside, eSports are here to stay, with an on-going growth all over the world, presenting disruptive events and engaging its audience, mainly, in new media platforms. Therefore, this dissertation will review the sports evolution panorama, incorporating the role of eSports in Portugal, and consequently, how digital evolution leveraged new habits of media consumption. With that in mind, parasocial interactions topics were reviewed and related-data was analysed, being clear that in both types of platforms, enjoyment, attachment and social interaction seem to positively influence the user experience. Lastly, the experience in sports environment came under scrutiny, embedding the recent SARSCOV2 pandemic impact in the research, trying to elaborate on the main behaviours and emotions felt by sports-enthusiast population. To do all that, primary research was conducted where respondents were asked to selfevaluate themselves regarding their experience while watching sports in both Traditional and Digital platforms. One of the main conclusions drawn from this research indicated that Digital platforms are predilect for eSports enthusiasts. On the other side, conventional sports fans still prefer Traditional media, however, the discrepancy between platforms preference is less notorious. It also became clear that sports absence was much noted, with people urging to get back to live events.

The International Conference on Multidisciplinary Perspectives on Equality and Diversity in Sports (ICMPEDS) is organized by GESPORT with the support of the Erasmus+ Programme of the European Union from the 14th to the 16th of July 2021. The conference is an excellent forum for academics, researchers, practitioners, athletes, man- agers and professionals of federations, associations and sport organizations, and those other- wise involved in sport to share and exchange ideas in different areas of sport related equality worldwide. We will keep you informed by email and post the latest information on this matter on the GESPORT website and social media. Sport and its management continues to be a field where men and masculinity strongly prevail. This conference aims to investigate the complexities attached to the following questions: What does gender openness mean in the context of sport in the 21st century? What persists as gen- der closure in the same context? What are the gender cultures that signify sport continuing to be defined by regimes that resort to a dominant masculinity embodied in a strong and athletic male body? Moreover, and albeit some exceptions, athletes, practitioners, decision and policy makers, and sports spectators are predominantly men. In this sense, gender discrimination and segregation are present in multiple aspects of sport. Some illustrations include: a) male athletes have high salaries, more career opportunities, and get more recognition by society than female athletes; b) management and leadership positions in sports organizations are mainly occupied by men, including in sports traditionally considered as feminine and which have become feminised (e.g. gymnastics and dance); c) masculinised sports and its male athletes have much more attention and recognition from the media than female athletes; d) sports journalism continues to be predominantly produced and managed by men; e) some sports spectatorships cultures are marked by rituals and interactions that resort to masculine tribalism, often leading to aggressive and violent behaviours. Gender discrimination in sport is somehow socially normalised and accepted through a dis- course that essentialises the embodied sexual differences between genders. This gender dis- course legitimises the exclusion of women in some sports modalities and traps female bodies in sociocultural constructions as less able to exercise and engage in sport, or as the second and weaker version of the ideal masculine body. However, there are signs that the context of sport may be changing. The European Union and some national governments have made an effort to promote gender equality and diversity by fostering the adoption of gender equality codes/policies in different modalities and in in- ternational and local sports organizations. These new policies aim to increase female partic- ipation and recognition in sport, their access to leadership positions and involvement in the decision-making in sport structures. Additionally, the number of women practising non-com- petitive sport and as sports spectators have started growing, leading to new representations of sport and challenging the role of women in such a context. Finally, different body constructions and the emergence of alternative embodied femininities and masculinities are also challeng- ing how athletes of both genders experience their bodies and sports practice. Yet, research is scarce about the impact of these changes/challenges in the sports context. This conference will focus on mapping gender relations in sport and its management by taking into account the different modalities, contexts, institutional policies, organizational structures and actors (e.g. athletes, spectators, media professionals, sport decision makers and man- agers). It will treat sport and its management as one avenue where gender segregation and inequality occurs, but also adopt such as a space that presents an opportunity for change and does so as a widely applicable topic whose traits and culture are reflected in organizations and work more broadly. In this sense, the conference is interested in theoretical and empirical research work that may explore, but are not limited to the following issues: • Women representativeness in sports modalities and in sport organizational structures in different countries; • Women and management accounting in sport organizations; • The gender regimes that (re)produce different sports policies, modalities, and institu- tions in sport; • The stories of resistance/conformity of women that already occupy different roles in sport contexts; • The challenges and impact of conventional and new body representations in sports institutions and including athletes of both genders; • The discourses of masculinities in sport and its effect on women and men athletes; • The emergence of nationalism and populist discourses in political and governments states and their impact on the (re)shaping of masculinity and femininity constructions in sport; • The gendered transformations of the spectators’ gaze in what concerns different sports modalities; • The effects of new groups of sports spectators on gender relations in sport; • The discourses in media and its participation in the sports gender (in)equality; • The impact of new technologies, and new practices of training/coaching in the body- work and identities of athletes of both genders.

Abstract:
Race, religion, and sports may seem like odd bedfellows, but, in fact, all three have been interacting with each other since the emergence of modern sports in the United States over a century ago. It was the sport of boxing that saw a black man become a champion at the height of the Jim Crow era and a baseball player who broke the color barrier two decades before the civil rights movement began. In this chapter, the role that religion has played in these and other instances where race (the African American race in particular) and sports have collided will be examined for its impact on the relationship between race and sports. The association of race, religion, and sports is not accidental. The chapter demonstrates that all three are co-constitutive of and dependent on each other for their meaning at these chosen junctures in American sports history.

Social media has ushered in seismic shifts to communication structures in society and these effects extend to the world of sport, where athletes and sports figures routinely divulge content on social media platforms. This chapter discusses athletes’ and other sports figures’ social media use to express their identity, which includes showcasing more of their personality, expressing dissent, and providing commentary on political and social issues. The chapter discusses legal implications for sport organization administrators as they seek to balance organizational reputation with First Amendment rights. The chapter also addresses related issues that can manifest in the online sphere, such as private commentary becoming public, threats made to athletes, and social media use by organization employees that can negatively impact athletes and harm the organization.

Sports are as varied as the people who play them. We run, jump, and swim. We kick, hit, and shoot balls. We ride sleds in the snow and surf in the sea. From the Olympians of ancient Greece to today’s professional athletes, from adult pickup soccer games to children’s gymnastics classes, people at all levels of ability at all times and in all places have engaged in sport. What drives this phenomenon? In Sport, the neuroscientist Jay Schulkin argues that biology and culture do more than coexist when we play sports—they blend together seamlessly, propelling each other toward greater physical and intellectual achievement. To support this claim, Schulkin discusses history, literature, and art—and engages philosophical inquiry and recent behavioral research. He connects sport’s basic neural requirements, including spatial and temporal awareness, inference, memory, agency, direction, competitive spirit, and endurance, to the demands of other human activities. He affirms sport’s natural role as a creative evolutionary catalyst, turning the external play of sports inward and bringing insight to the diversion that defines our species. Sport, we learn, is a fundamental part of human life.

Abstract:
Individuals undertaking exercise include those engaged in aerobic activities as part of a healthy lifestyle, those engaged in an active fitness or rehabilitation programme relevant to acute or chronic conditions such as cardiovascular disease, respiratory problems, and musculoskeletal disorders, and the committed competitive athlete with high performance targets. Accordingly, those injured as a consequence of exercise or sport attend medical practitioners in diverse circumstances. Urgency of assessment of the full impact of injury clearly varies across the spectrum from the life-threatening situation on the field of play (or other sports/recreational exercise location, for instance poolside or roadside) to one in which a chronic condition can be evaluated in the relative comfort of the clinician’s consulting room. Irrespective of the circumstances, the primary requirement is the establishment of an accurate diagnosis. The process of assessment is aided when relevant by an appropriate index of suspicion with respect to those injuries that are not often seen outside sporting and recreational activity (e.g. throwers’ elbow and shin splints). Diagnosis of tissue injury is followed by a full assessment of its impact on the function of the surrounding structures, and subsequently assessment of impairment of sporting capacity in general. Evaluation is made of the aetiological factors associated with the development of injury, the behavioural responses, including motivation and health prioritization, and the individual’s standard of performance (actual and potential). Clinical assessment (and reassessment) is a constant theme throughout the text....

Abstract The overall findings of this research point to a mix of positive and negative human rights impacts of the Rio 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games, and on the visitor economy of the host city. On a positive note, affirmative action included persons with disabilities and from underprivileged communities in the workforce. New sports and leisure centres were built. Freedom of expression and association was reinforced by protesters demonstrating and using the platform of the event to raise issues. Several initiatives by the Organizing Committee, government, companies, and associations constituted positive mechanisms for leverage of the human rights to education and to participate in the cultural life of the community, albeit with limited long-term impacts. These wider economic and social successes associated with the hosting of the Games can positively contribute to the quality and inclusivity of the visitor economy. redevelopment, the Games' land use displaced thousands of people, violating the right to housing and several other human rights through abusive practices used by the government in the eviction process. Under the pretext of creating safe spaces for visitors and safeguarding their image of the city, the government's violence towards poor and black communities was aggravated, with the militarisation of the city impacting on the right to life, protection, education, and justice. Attempting to mask the city's socio-economic problems and undesirable aspects for sponsors and visitors, freedom of expression was undermined as protesters were targeted by the police and street vendors were driven out of public spaces.

This concluding chapter brings together the diverse themes covered throughout the book, showing how the impact of the Cold War on gymnastics is still being felt today. It also demonstrates the links between the issues traversed in earlier chapters of this book, from economic policy, to the structure of the international sports system, cheating, coaching, abuse, and incarnations of femininity. This chapter concludes that all of these influences on gymnastics are the result of international conflict, as one would expect from the Cold War, but also a result of collaboration. However, collaboration has seldom characterized the relationship between coaches and gymnasts. Despite the balance of power internationally, the sport has been hampered by a fundamental imbalance between athletes and officials. Traversing existing mechanisms that could be used to combat abuse, including an increased minimum age rule, it argues that gymnastics’ needs to look back to its feminist roots to restore the sport as safe and empowering for women.

Abstract:
Slovenian sport is financed from three main sources: public expenditure provided by the state through the annual sports program and the Sports Foundation at the national level and local communities; population expenditure on sports products and services; and economic expenditure, which is mostly sponsorship in sports. Each company follows its own sponsorship strategy, with many areas and projects always competing with each other, deciding which areas to invest in (e.g., sports, culture, etc.) and assess their priorities and relationships with other investments. 2020 has been heavily marked by the COVID-19 pandemic, which had a profound impact on the world and the economy, as well as on sports and sponsorships. Namely, sport is one of the forms of social activity in which the participants are physically close or even in contact at all times. These are athletes, coaches, masseurs, physiotherapists, and others, as well as spectators. Most Slovenian companies have decided to insist on sponsoring selected sports activities, but they also expect some sort of government assistance. This chapter explores the impact of COVID-19 on sponsorship Slovenian sports.

Frederick Noronha synthesizes an account of the rich social and political history of football in Goa, with the crosscurrents of the influence of the church, and the former Portuguese rulers, referencing the economic and political forces that shaped the game in later years. Goa’s links with football cannot be separated from the region’s long, 450-year legacy of Portuguese colonial rule. In recent years however, political parties, knowing the importance of football in Goa have used the game to curry favour among certain sections of the population. Wealthy and influential names dominate the football associations. On the other hand, with rapid real estate growth, playing fields are disappearing shrinking the pool of talent. The author in this short chapter provides a glimpse of how various factors and agencies outside the sport impact on its development.

Abstract:
In the 19th century in many European countries people started to see the importance of hygiene and health care, as those factors had a significant impact on the health and life expectancy of citizens. However, Poland, which was at that time under the rule of Russia, Prussia, and Austria-Hungary, was extremely backward in this respect. As a result Poles were physically weak and sickly, and their life expectancy was among the lowest in Europe. The same applied to children and young people. Great social activists, including writers and publicists, encouraged the organisation of health-care, hygiene, healthy eating, gymnastics, tourism, and various sports for children and adolescents. They advocated simple ideas, which nowadays are obvious for everybody, but at that time were innovative, and their activity must be regarded as Promethean. The “Falcon” Polish Gymnastic Society and scouting also played a great role in this respect. The activities undertaken by Polish writers and social activists to improve the physical condition, health, and hygiene of young Poles brought positive effects.

This chapter considers the religious impact of sports. It argues that sports go beyond mere game playing. Whether we participate or watch sports, they function as a center of unity and identity much in the way that religion does. Sports exercise a power for shaping and engaging the world for millions of devoted fans; they enable participants to explore levels of selfhood that otherwise remain inaccessible; they establish means for bonding in communal relations with other devotees; they model ways to deal with contingencies and fate while playing by the rules; and they provide the prospect for experiencing victory and thus sampling, at least in an anticipatory way, “abundant life.” In America, quite simply, sports constitute a form of popular religion.

Artistic Gymnastics is characterised by a higher content, rich and varied elements and technical processes. Gymnasts learn new elements on an ongoing basis, therefore these elements should be learned correctly from the technical point of view so that on the already appropriated content. New elements are built upon and tied to other elements, of a higher difficulty degree. In gymnastics, technical preparation is very important, because only a fairly correct technique ensures prospects for progress. The main purpose of this paper is to highlight the dismounts characteristics of the double salto backward tucked`s landings, at uneven bars and the impact of using a specialized software for their technic`s analysis and correctness. An constative study was realised in order to accomplish the purpose, in wich was used the biomechanic video analysis method, using KINOVEA and PHYSICS TOOLKIT as main research method. There were also used the following methods: study of bibliographic research, observation method, the statistical method and graphic representation. With Kinovea were studied the angles, and with Phisics Toolkit programs were studied the dynamic and kinematic characteristics of technique's key elements used for the dismount with double salto backward tucked, using methods from Postural Landmarks of Movements as Main (key) Elements of Sport Acrobatics Technique: start position of the body (SP) - moment of releasing the bars , multiplication of body position (MP) - somersault rotation , maximum height of flight of General Centre Gravitation (GCG) , and final position (FP) of the body,- landing time of first contact (FP1) and final position (FP2). The study subjects were the 8 junior III gymnasts, 12 years old, qualified in the final of uneven bars, at the Junior III, II and I Individual National Championship, Onesti 2013. The study results revealed the biomechanical dismounts characteristics of the double salto backward tucked landings, execution technical mistakes in accordance with the sportive performance obtained in the contest.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT Rhythmic gymnastics, like other sports disciplines called “artistic”, is continuously developing in a sports-technical sense. Gymnastics varieties, such as “dance gymnastics”, “rhythmical gymnastics”, “expressive gymnastics”, and “plastic and stage expression gymnastics” have lost their individuality but different elements of their means of expression find their place in the requirements for composition. The efforts of the specialists in this sport are aimed at preserving the identity of this sports discipline, namely, using various musical accompaniments and a wide range of dance movements combined with complex exercises. The aim of the research was to trace the development of the difficulty in routines and a retrospect of the main indicators for making competitive routines for the period 1963-2021 was made with the use of a theoretical and synthesis method. The evaluation of dance elements and complex exercises in competitive programs of gymnasts was in the very first Code of Rules known. There are three different components – difficulty of the exercises, general impression, and accuracy of execution. The general changes in the difficulty of the exercises can be clearly seen if we divide the Codes of Rules into the following periods: 1) 1963-1971, 2) 1976-1984, 3) 1997-2005, and 4) 2009-2021. The changes are due to two major factors: - objective – perfection of the training process, emergence of new exercises, gymnasts’ exclusive motor abilities; choreographs, musicians, dancer’ participation in gymnasts’ preparation; - subjective – creation and modification of the rules by members of rhythmic gymnastics technical committee who are representatives of different schools and cultures, with different concepts about the development of the future image of this sport. The retrospect of the requirements in the competitive rules shows that the greatest transformation of rhythmic gymnastics is in its turning into a complex sport.

Abstract:
The trends and development of artistic gymnastics have required the complication of the competitive combinations in individual apparatus. This has led to the need to improve the technique of basic exercises with the help of auxiliary apparatus in artistic gymnastics. The aim present study is to establish the role of auxiliary apparatuses in the study a kip of uneven bars. The ten best performances were selected through expert evaluation. Using frame-by-frame motion analysis, we measured the angles in the different phases of the impact of the exercise. The object of the study is the technique of the basic exercises of the uneven bars, and the subject is the need for auxiliary apparatuses in practice. To achieve this aim, we used the methods of expert evaluation, biomechanical analysis, and mathematical-statistical methods – variation analysis. The analysis shows that the average value of the angle in the hip joints in the preparatory phase and in the main information closes to or decreases with the angle when performing the exercise of the auxiliary apparatuses – a ball in the preparatory phase; per cylinder – in the main phase; on a simulator – also in the main phase. At the angle in the shoulder joints, both the coincidences and the differences in the individual parts when performing a kip. The results for angles that do not coincide with the angles of the auxiliary apparatuses are considered. We don’t know whether the auxiliary apparatus will give the necessary effect in learning the correct technique when performing a kip. In conclusion, we can summarize that the obtained data will help specialists in gymnastics to study the technique of basic exercises of individual apparatuses in artistic gymnastics in adolescent gymnasts.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT Periodization and planning of the training load is an essential process in the preparation of an elite gymnast. On the one hand, the coaches and gymnasts have to achieve the necessary level (individual maximum) of the volume (quantity of elements and routines), and on the other hand, they have to do it at the “right time”. Last but not least is to prevent the gymnasts from injuries. That is why we need to study the dynamic of the training load from a physiological point of view and should have a better understanding of how the body’s system responds. This study aims to observe body reactions to the training load during one microcycle and one mesocycle in acrobatics gymnastics. One female youth Olympic champion (18 years old) and one male bronze medallist from junior WCH (26 years old) were tested. The study was made at the end of the preparation period and the beginning of the competitive period. The indicators measured were HR, blood La. Heart rate was recorded by Suunto Ambit 2. A drop of blood sample was taken from the fingertip to assess the average peak blood lactate concentration using an Accutrend Plus Roche. A heart rate record was made during one week of training (6 training days). Monitoring of the blood La took place once a week (every Thursday) for one month. The obtained results show how the gymnast body’s systems react to the training load in microcycles and mesocycle in acrobatics gymnastics. The data allow timely optimization of the training load and is a prerequisite for the improvement of the next periodization and planning of the training load not only for gymnasts that were tested but also for high-level gymnasts (Mixed Pair) with similar age and anthropometric indicators.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT In recent years, artistic gymnastics has been characterized by a constantly increasing complexity of the exercises performed. In this regard, the control and assessment of coordination abilities strongly activate the system for sports selection in adolescents. The research aims to establish the connection of coordination abilities with the technical training of young gymnasts. We selected coordination tests to identify the most significant component of its structure in the initial selection in gymnastics. We determined the technical level of the studied gymnasts through expert assessment in natural conditions of competition – State Championship 2022. The object of the research are the coordination abilities in the selection of 6-7-year-old girls, and the subject of the study are the components of coordination and their connection with technical training. In this research, we used the following methods: testing method, expert evaluation method, and mathematical-statistical methods – variation and correlation analysis. The processed results show that the overall score from the coordination tests has a moderate correlation with the technical level of the results taken from the competition. The static equilibrium stability test shows the highest degree of correlation on the technical level of all gymnastic apparatus. The results of the other tests, which showed a lower correlation, remain debatable. In conclusion, we can summarize that establishing the level of coordination skills will help the process of selecting talented gymnasts.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT Volunteers are a valuable form of assets for many organizations, as they help reduce costs, ease the budget of full-time staff. Significant benefits from volunteering are observed in healthcare, education, sports and other areas of the economy. It contributes to the development of personal skills, helps to socialize the individual. Through it, it is possible to make contacts for possible future employment. The organization and conducting a number of international sports events in Bulgaria, combined with the demand for volunteers, led the organizers to create strategies for recruiting and managing this human resource. In an attempt to implement this activity, it is necessary to know both the points of satisfaction for volunteers and the factors influencing their future intentions to participate in sports initiatives. The object of study are volunteers who took part in various sports events - Rhythmic Gymnastics World Cup 2022, WIZZ AIR SOFIA MARATHON, 9th International Championship in Rhythmic Gymnastics “Cup Nuance NSA”, events from the calendar of the Bulgarian Federation Sport for All, and the European Club Cup in Archery – Russe 2022. Its purpose is to explore the importance of various factors in the management of work with volunteers - motivating, their preliminary training, in terms of their satisfaction and more. In the course of the study, an online survey was conducted containing indicators for determining the satisfaction of volunteers in the listed events. The obtained data show that among the studied audience the satisfaction with the listed factors is relatively high. There are some weaknesses in the preliminary organization and distribution of volunteers in the overall organization.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT Sport is a mirror of the culture in which it develops, therefore analyzing the problems and trends in sport we have the opportunity to see a simplified model of society itself. The subject of our study is to understand how much our society is a subject of a gender stereotypes and to which extent contemporary women and men are free to express themselves in any public sphere of their choice. The case with sports officials sheds light on this problem. In the period May 2021 - January 2022, we conducted a study, within the international project Raising the growth and participation of female sports officials in Europe (WINS Project), supported by the Erasmus + Sport program, on the state and attitudes of Bulgarian sports officials, in all sports. We noticed several facts, typical for the modern Bulgarian society: Bulgarian women do not suffer from strong gender stereotypes regarding what is a “male” or a “female” occupation. However, we notice a low level of involvement of women as officials in “men’s sports”, such as football, boxing and taekwondo and very high in “women’s sports”: almost 99% in rhythmic gymnastics. Yet there is a positive trend in terms of women’s involvement in “men’s” sports. There has been an increase in recent years of women officials in sports such as taekwondo, boxing, football, weightlifting, but we are still very far from the desired equality. Bulgarian women occupy a large part of the low-level sport officials’ positions in athletics, but there are few women occupying higher positions and women also have lower salaries. In sports refereeing there are no legal differences that give privileges to one or the other sex, but this “equality” in some cases harms women who, due to motherhood or various ailments, have specific needs and requirements for working hours and work environment.

Abstract:
This study aims at showing the application of transfer technology based on computerized video analysis in the improvement of learning the elements in women’s artistic gymnastics. This scientific approach led to an experimental study organized during the period 2012 – 2014 with 14 female athletes of 12 to 15 years old, members of junior national team of Romania. Methods of research: computerized video analysis, using the specialized programs -”Kinovea” and ”Physics ToolKit”; method of movement postural orientation for the analysis of sports technique key elements; statistical method (KyPlot) and the method of results graphical representation. During the study there were analyzed, in terms of biomechanics, a number of 125 technical elements executed in three national competitions, namely: 36 Yurchenko-type handspring vaults; 32 dismounts off uneven bars by double back salto; 22 dismounts off balance beam by layout salto with 360°-1080° turn and double back salto and 35 acrobatic elements on the floor with double back salto. The computerized video analysis, made according to the specific character of each apparatus, highlighted the key elements of sports technique regarding the preparatory phase – the launching posture, the basic phase – multiplication of body posture / position (tucked, pike or layout) and the final phase – concluding posture – landing. The study results point out the efficient application of transfer technology (vertical, horizontal and mixed one) and its influence on the improvement of learning the elements on each apparatus of women’s artistic gymnastics. The development of long-term programs by means of didactical technologies within the macro-methods for elements learning contributed to the improvement and increase of difficulty and also to the possibility to use them on other apparatus of women’s artistic gymnastic in order to achieve better performances in competitions.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT The topic of this report is related to introducing information about the Olympic flame’s passing through Bulgaria in 1936. Our country takes a significant place in the development of the international Olympic movement. Since it participated in the first modern Olympic Games, our country has persisted in establishing the Olympic values in society through the gymnastics movement, the Bulgarian Olympic Committee activities, and other prominent sports people’s activities. An important feature related to Bulgarian sport’s involvement in the Olympic idea and the Olympic movement was our active participation in organizing the first carrying of the Olympic flame. This study aims to reveal new information on the topic. The research encompasses several major areas for collecting information – foreign literary sources research (13 sources); a survey of all publications by Bulgarian researchers-historians in the field of sport and the Olympic movement in Bulgaria (11 sources); a review of all preserved Bulgarian periodicals since 1936 (74 articles found), review of the „Olympia Zeitung“since 1936 (8 articles found) and review of Greek newspapers since 1936 (4 articles found). Methodologically, all the information found in scientific or popular publications was systematized by using content analysis, comparative analysis, and critical analysis. The keywords used to search for information on the topic were: Olympic Flame, Olympic Flame Torch, Olympic Games 1936, and Olympic symbols. For the aim of the research we used data retrieved from Journal of Olympic History, Journal of the History of Sport, International Olympic Academy, Olympic Review, www.academia.edu, as well as books and publications pre-served in the historical archive of National Sports Academy “Vassil Levski”, the Central National Archive, the Regional archives, and the regional history museums in the towns where the Olympic flame went through. In the unfavorable material and economic conditions in the 1930s our country created an excellent organization and turned this event into one of the most important social-cultural phenomena, which influenced the new perception about the role and significance of the Olympic Games and amateur sport.

Zibani, Nadia. Ishraq: Safe spaces to learn, play and grow: Expansion of recreational sports program for adolescent rural girls in Egypt. Population Council, 2004. http://dx.doi.org/10.31899/pgy22.1003.

Full text
Abstract:
Over the past three years, the Ishraq program in the villages of northern El-Minya, Egypt, grew from a novel idea into a vibrant reality. In the process, approximately 300 rural girls have participated in a life-transforming chance to learn, play, and grow into productive members of their local communities. Currently other villages—and soon other governorates—are joining the Ishraq network. Ishraq is a mixture of literacy, life-skills training, and—for girls who have been sheltered in domestic situations of poverty and isolation—a chance to play sports and games with other girls their age and develop a sense of self-worth and mastery; the program reinforces the lessons they receive in life-skills classes about hygiene, nutrition, and healthy living. This guide to the sports and games component of the program is geared to the needs of disadvantaged adolescent girls. It is intended for those in the development community interested in the potential of sports to enhance the overall impact of adolescent programs. Sports can be combined with other program components to give girls a more active experience, whether the primary focus is reproductive health, literacy, or livelihood skills.

Abstract:
This paper studies the effect of two place-based policies implemented in Cali, Colombia on social capital and trust. We use the CaliBRANDO survey to account for institutional and interpersonal trust, matching neighborhood of residence and where policies are applied. We set up a difference-in-difference model to estimate the impact of the policies on the indexes that measure trust. We nd that the organized sport policy improves institutional trust by about 4%. Our results are significant for soccer and basketball and not significant for futsal and other activities. The evidence does not support an effect of nightlights on trust.

Abstract:
The article analyzes the phenomenon of augmented reality (AR) in education. AR is a new technology that complements the real world with the help of computer data. Such content is tied to specific locations or activities. Over the last few years, AR applications have become available on mobile devices. AR becomes available in the media (news, entertainment, sports). It is starting to enter other areas of life (such as e-commerce, travel, marketing). But education has the biggest impact on AR. Based on the analysis of scientific publications, the authors explored the possibilities of using augmented reality in education. They identified means of augmented reality for teaching computer science at school. Such programs and services allow students to observe the operation of computer systems when changing their parameters. Students can also modify computer hardware for augmented reality objects and visualize algorithms and data processes. The article describes the content of author training for practicing teachers. At this event, some applications for training in AR technology were considered. The possibilities of working with augmented reality objects in computer science training are singled out. It is shown that the use of augmented reality provides an opportunity to increase the realism of research; provides emotional and cognitive experience. This all contributes to engaging students in systematic learning; creates new opportunities for collaborative learning, develops new representations of real objects.
