Abstract:

Alatram, Ala'a A. M. "A forensic framework for detecting denial-of-service attacks in IoT networks using the MQTT protocol." Thesis, Edith Cowan University, Research Online, Perth, Western Australia, 2022. https://ro.ecu.edu.au/theses/2561.

Abstract:
In the domain of the Internet of Things (IoT), The Message Queueing Telemetry Protocol (MQTT) is the most widely used protocol for applications across a wide range of realms, including industrial automation, healthcare, smart homes, and smart cities; MQTT is also used in many other critical real-world applicastions. An example is BMW’s Car Sharing application, that uses MQTT to provide reliable connectivity. However, due to a lack of security considerations during the design of the MQTT protocol, all the networks implementing it are prone to cyberattacks, such as denial-of-service (DoS) attacks. While the research community has a primary focus on MQTT vulnerabilities from the perspective of intrusion detection, digital forensic considerations of the protocol have yet to be addressed. This work attempts to address this issue, specifically by generating a novel dataset based on data captured from a testbed in an IoT setting, and the application of optimised Machine Learning (ML) algorithms to differentiate between cyberattacks and benign network traffic. The philosophical assumptions guiding the conduct of this research are Positivist Paradigm, Quantitative Methodology, Experimental Research Mode, and Quasi-Experimental as a Sub-category. As a result of the IoT testbed construction, a substantial quantity of IoT data was produced, including standard MQTT data and ten different DoS and DDoS attack scenarios. In addition, a network forensic analysis of the collected data shows specific information that can be extracted and the differences between attacks and normal data. Also, eight different ML algorithms were compared, resulting in the suggestions of Random Forest (RF), XGBoost, and Artificial Neural Network (ANN) for use in the proposed framework. Gray Wolf Optimiser (GWO) was selected to combine RF and ANN in a core component of the framework. It has been demonstrated that RF with GWO and ANN with GWO can optimise results. The output of this research can have a potential impact on the implementations of MQTT-powered networks globally, thereby improving the security of modern networks that use this protocol.

Prudhomme, Jorian. Thesis, Montpellier, 2015. http://www.theses.fr/2015MONTS027/document.

Full text
Abstract:
Sandflies are hematophagous insects belonging to the family Psychodidae and the subfamily phlebotominae. This diptera, yellowish, relatively small (2-3 mm) has about 800 species. 70 of these species have been identified as potential vectors of which forty are proven ones. They can transmit different pathogens; the main ones are Leishmania and phlebovirus. This thesis focused on sandflies, vectors of leishmaniasis. Leishmaniases are parasitic diseases caused by protozoa of the genus Leishmania. They affect a wide range of vertebrate hosts, including humans and dogs. They are still a major problem of public health in many countries and are currently in expansion. Although this disease is widely studied, we still have a lot to learn about its vector: the sandfly. For example, the organization of populations in ecosystems and the parameters which structure them are very little studied up to now. It is therefore essential to know the biology of the different actors of a parasite cycle to better understand the transmission of pathogens, to assess risks of transmission, and finally to be able to effectively fight against the disease. In this context, the aim of this thesis is to study the ecology and the structuring of sandfly populations in a known endemic area of leishmaniasis and the impact of biotic and abiotic factors on their organization. To reach this objective, we performed captures of sandflies along a 14km transect located in the Montpellier region which presents an altitudinal, climate and environmental diversity. Sandfly populations have been characterized by taxonomic, spatio-temporal, genetic (microsatellites) and morphometric (geometry morphometry) approaches. The genetic, morphometric and species distribution results were then confronted with climatic (temperature, relative humidity) or environmental parameters (altitude, slope, station, microhabitat).During this work, four species were captured: Phlebotomus ariasi (93.23%), P. perniciosus (0.48%), P. mascittii (0.11%) and S. minuta (6.18%). They have a seasonal activity from May to October with an abundance peak in July-August when average temperatures are optimal for sandflies (20-30°C). Although the environment has been considerably transformed in our study area in 30 years, the abundance of sandflies does not seem to have changed significantly, highlighting their ability to adapt to ecosystem modifications in short and long-term. The presence and abundance of the two predominant species (P. ariasi and S. minuta) are significantly influenced by altitude, temperature, relative humidity, slope and wall orientation. The genetic analyses show that diversity is maintained at all scales of study and that sandflies are organized in micropopulations. The morphometric geometry data reveal a sexual dimorphism, well known in insects but also a phenotypic structuring correlated to environmental or temporal factors (month, slope, altitude and station). Both of these approaches, because of their complementarity, help provide information on the ecology and organization of sandfly populations and to discuss about the consequences in terms of leishmaniasis transmission

Abstract:
Intense seafaring and cultural/commercial exchanges took place in the region among the Central-Northern Tyrrhenian sea, Liguria and Provence during the VI millennium BCE; these contributed to the neolithisation of the western Mediterranean and were intimately linked to the exploitation and circulation of raw materials, such as obsidian, chert and greenstone. Within this framework, the assessment of ceramic circulation paths is obviously central to understand the economic and cultural relations between different Neolithic groups.Exchanges and potential interactions between different groups were assessed by characterising raw materials used in pottery production, as well as their provenance and diffusion, in order to contribute to research on the early Neolithic in the above mentioned areas. The methodology was aimed at sourcing raw materials and defining technical choices in pottery production by petrographic analyses (stereo- and / or optical microscope) of ceramic samples from some key sites of the Impressa-Cardiale Ware techno-complex, and on their comparison with geo-resources and archaeological pottery data.Pottery production and circulation among the Tyrrhenian, Liguria and Provence areas, in distinct chrono-cultural stages of Early Neolithic, was defined upon the results of these analyses

Abstract:
In my thesis, I work with the connection between the deathanxiety that I felt as a child and the climate anxiety that I feel today. I am probably not alone in looking at death as something abstract and unpleasant, and with the climate crisis around the corner, that feeling has intensified for me. Having the future of humanity fundamentally shaken makes me feel as small as when I was a child and understood how big the universe was when I looked out at the stars one starry night. In my thesis I write about the anthropocene and how man may have used Christianity to justify the exploitation of nature by putting himself above it. I write about how secular man separates himself from his mortality, by separating himself from nature. Through my craft, I want to investigate the relationship between people and nature. I want to let ceramics function as a material manifestation of the duality I experience exists between man and nature. I want to let the material function as a therapeutic mirror where my worries and my feelings, thoughts and ideas are thrown back at me in new formulations. By shaping nature, I hope to be able to examine my own relationship to nature, the inner nature of man and our own mortality, birth and decay.

Abstract:
This work introduces GeoD and VersionD. GeoD is a causally-consistent georeplication shim for key-value stores. GeoD enables the separation of concerns regarding replication and convergence from key-value stores, while preserving all of their read-only functionality. VersionD extends the feature set of GeoD by providing a versioning API, allowing applications to store multiple values for a given object, and to use context-specific conflict-resolution rules. We also discuss an efficient architecture for optimistically replicated systems, where all the storage replicas persist data in a common shared DHT. Since most key-value stores don’t support versioning and GeoD relies on versioning support from the key-value store, we developed a shim layer that also augments the traditional core API with extra versioning operations and logic.

Abstract:
Being able to interact with video streams can be both fun, educational and provide help during disaster situations. However, to achieve the best user experience the interaction must be seamless. This thesis presents the design and implementation of an interface for a media player that allows for users to view multiple video streams of the same event from different geographical positions and angles. The thesis first describes the system design and methods used to implement this kind of media player and explains how to achieve a seemingly good and, to a higher extent, enjoyable video streaming experience. Second, an algorithm is developed for placing each video stream object on the interface's geographic-based map automatically. These objects are placed to ensure the relative positions of the objects compared to the real world. The end result of this project is a proof-of-concept media player which enables a user to see an overview over a geographical streaming area. Presented with the relative location of each stream to the point of interest the player allows the user to click on that stream and switch to viewing the recordings from that point of view. While the resulting player is not yet seamless, the result of this project shows the command-and-control center as initially envisioned. Implementing seamless, uninterrupted, switching between the video streams is outside the scope of this thesis. However, as demonstrated and argued in the thesis, the work done here and the developed software code will allow for easy integration of more advanced prefetching algorithms in future and parallel works.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT: In the last decades the evolution of software industry has reached an extreme importance in our personal daily life and also in the companies behavior. The existing sets of tools represent a vital role in our company’s communications, strategies, decisions supports, systems and process analysis, among others. Software is typically designed to enable humans to perform tasks which the human brain is not well capable, such as: handling large amounts of information, performing complex calculations, and controlling many simultaneous processes. This final project was developed based under the subject software. The present document shows how a multinational enterprise develops internally a new modulate software. Some techniques will be investigated and applied to a real life problem existing in the successful Robert Bosch-Belgium company at the automobile industry world responsible for the production of wiper blades. Here you will find a suggestion of a software life cycle methodology and an explanation step by step of all the aspects of this process from the creation to the development of a new calculation tool for design decision support. This methodology was applied to the company thus enabling to create a handbook for the simulation software called “GWB”. More precisely this project describes the testing phase, defined as validation. This phase contains the planning and execution of software tests. These results were analyzed and compared with real measurements. Based on previous knowledge, was able to improve the accuracy of the software either in production parameters or on parameters of actual behavior. With the creation of the manual and the software improvement two main objectives involved in this internship were accomplished. This work contributed significantly to the development of the Robert Bosch simulation software. However, it is suggested several future actions. To assist in the development of the “GWB” tool for a proper implementation in the wiper blade production process.

Abstract:
This thesis presents a method to deploy and lookup applications and devices based on a geographical location. The proposed solution is a combination of two existing technologies, where the first one is a geocode system to encode latitude and longitude coordinates, and the second one is a Distributed Hash Table (DHT) where values are stored and accessed with a $<$key, value$>$ pair. The purpose of this work is to be able to search a specific location for the closest device that solves the user needs, such as finding an Internet of Things (IoT) device. The thesis covers a method for searching by iterating key-value pairs in the DHT and expanding the area to find the devices further away. The search is performed using two main algorithm implementations LayerExpand and SpiralBoxExpand, to scan the area around where the user started the search. LayerExpand and SpiralBoxExpand are tested and evaluated in comparison to each other. The comparison results are presented in the form of plots where both of the functions are shown together. The function analysis results show how the size of the DHT, the number of users, and size of the search area affects the performance of the searches.

Abstract:
This dissertation analyzes the geography of information in the 21st century where BigData, social networks, user generated production of content and geography combine to create new and complex patterns of space, context and sociability. Both online and offline, social networks are creating a space that simultaneously unifies individuals and identifies distinct differences in their patterns and their relationships to space. Using methodologies derived from spatial analysis, geographic information systems (GIS), and Social Network Analysis (SNA), this dissertation identifies how Information Communication Technologies (ICTs) both mimic and bolster existing social structures and allow individuals to extend their activities into flows between non-contiguous spaces. Simultaneously it demonstrates how the adoption of user-generated geographic information has not been uniform. Instead it has resulted in an uneven distribution of content and more nuanced digital divides. Although geographically uneven, social structures developed through online networks of user-generated content are most effective at transmitting information at a local level. This dissertation provides a comprehensive examination of online networks and representations of the GeoWeb. It repudiates previous assumptions that online content provides liberation and collaboration among users without regard to geographic constraints and demonstrates the locally constrained nature social networks and the demographically constrained nature of geographic information.

Abstract:
Geo-distributed file systems suffer from high latency and network partitions. Because of this, and to ensure high availability, such systems typically commit updates locally, with no latency, and propagate them in the background. Such optimistic replication faces two major challenges: (i) detecting conflicts between concurrent updates and resolving them in a way meaningful for users, while maintaining system integrity invariants; and (ii) supporting legacy applications that are not prepared to deal with concurrency anomalies. Existing optimistic geo-distributed file systems fall short of addressing the challenges. For instance, Dropbox does not support hard links; Andrew File System fails on some concurrent renaming of directories; and all existing systems use automatic conflict resolution that violates the legacy POSIX semantics. We present our solution to the above problems in the design and implementation of a prototype geo-distributed file system, named Tofu. Its design includes a new session abstraction to support the legacy API, while allowing optimistic updates. Unlike previous approaches, our solution is based on a formal model covering all aspects of a Unix-like file system, including directories, inodes, hard links, etc. It is able to detect all conflicts on those data structures, and resolves them in a way that we believe users will find generally reasonable. Experiments show that Tofu is highly scalable, and incurs linear overhead, improving over existing academic and industrial systems

Abstract:

Applied Research in System Analysis (ARiSA) AB, is a company whose main objective is to market the VizzAnalyzer™ software quality tool and related services, experiences, and research results.

In the beginning, recording the time spent on different activities and projects for project control, cost calculation, and customer billing manually and individually was sufficient and effective. With the number of projects and people involved at a time increasing the existing mechanisms were not sufficient anymore and needed to be replaced to support an efficient recording of time and report generation.

To solve this situation, a prototype of a web-based time tracking system was implemented. The task for this thesis was to build on the existing prototype implementation, to improve and complete it. In detail, to extend the functionalities of the web application adding user, project and activity management, and report creation.

The solution supports an efficient time tracking for employees and it makes the report generation easier.

This thesis describes the requirements for the project and the resulting implementation.

Abstract:

The world is growing more and more genetically modified (or engineered) crops (GM crops). In Argentina farmers grow almost only GM soy, and no conventional soy. It is a controversial subject, since genetic engineering has many advocates and critics. The positive sides of GM crops are that it can create higher yields and incomes for the farmers. Those are the main objects of growing GM crops. Critics, on the other hand, say that GM crops have bad effects on the environment, and the risks could be too high. For example GM crops can spread to neighboring farms, where organic crops are growing. Many scientists claim that nobody really have enough knowledge of the effects of growing GM crops, and therefore thorough risk assessments are needed to examine the effects and possible risks of growing GM crops before starting to grow them. Politicians, too often, make decisions on false scientific grounds, when they claim that genetic engineering is a safe and precise method. The large corporations developing GMOs are heavily influencing political decision making. Scientists have studied the genetic engineering process and the results show that the method is not precise. It is difficult to know exactly what gene is transferred, and where it ends up. It is also important to discuss the precautionary principle in the decision making process.

With the intensive consumption of natural resources that we have achieved in the 21st century and the recognition of human actions as drivers of socio-environmental exhaustion, it is imperative to investigate ways of interfering in the environments through interaction and transforming these relationships into potentiality. Through this, we search through cartography a relational enunciation approaching of artistic processes and eco-logical practices developed in the Atelier Contagio. From this mapping, are presented fascicles that contribute with a theoretical / conceptual effort to approach some senses present in these practices.
Abstract:

"Characterization of Gαo role on neuritogenesis: a focus on the Gαo-Amyloid precursor protein complex." Doctoral thesis, Universidade de Aveiro, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10773/22057.

Full text
Abstract:
Doutoramento em Biomedicina
Gαo is the most abundant Gα subunit present in the brain, however, its specific functions are still far from clear. Studies of the signaling pathways modulated by Gαo have uncovered potential roles for Gαo in the development of the nervous system, especially in neuritogenesis. The characterization of Gαo interactome has also been crucial for the better understanding of this protein’s functions. One of the Gαo interacting proteins is the amyloid precursor protein (APP), a protein that is involved in several physiological functions, such as cell survival, neuronal migration, and neuronal differentiation. APP is also best known for its involvement in Alzheimer’s Disease (AD). APP binds and activates Gαo, an interplay that was associated with neuronal migration and AD. However, so far, no published study has investigated the effects of the APP-Gαo interaction on neuritogenesis. The main goal of this work was thus to characterize Gαo role on neuritogenesis by focusing the research on the neuritogenic effects of the Gαo-APP complex. First, by using SH-SY5Y neuroblastoma cells, we studied the impact of APP serine 655 (S655) phosphorylation on the APP-Gαo interaction. Through the use of two APP mutants mimicking the phosphorylated and dephosphorylated state of S655, SE and SA APP respectively, we have demonstrated that S655 phosphorylation increases APP efficiency to bind and activate Gαo. Moreover, we present evidence that APP modulates Gαo neuritogenic effects in a phosphodependent mechanism. STAT3 and ERK1/2 signaling displayed a sequential activation on this neuritogenic mechanism, with STAT3 being mainly involved in the formation of new processes, while ERK1/2 was more involved in neuritic elongation. We also present data supporting a role for the APP-Gαo complex on dendritogenesis in rat primary neuronal cultures. The second part of this work focused on unraveling the mechanisms involved in the control of APP and Gαo cellular protein levels. We identified the lysosome as a new pathway by which Gαo is degraded, as an effect of SA APP overexpression. We also provide evidence that this degradation mechanism might be part of chaperone-mediated autophagy, through which APP-Gαo signaling might be regulated. Finally, due to our interest in studying neuronal differentiation and a lack of reliable tools to analyze phase contrast images, we developed NeuronRead, an ImageJ macro capable of semi-automated analysis of both phase contrast and fluorescence neuronal images. NeuronRead was extensively validated and used to monitor SH-SY5Y differentiation upon modulation of Gαo activity. With this work, we delivered new data that advances knowledge on the function and regulation of the Gαo-APP complex in a neuronal context, and provided the scientific community with a new tool for the study of neuronal differentiation.

Abstract:
Approximately thirty years after their inception, the use of genetically modified organisms, or GMOs, remains contentious. Often, proponents of their use contend that the potential of GMOs to mitigate poverty and hunger in the “developing world” outweighs concerns in the “developed world” about their potential risks. This line of argument simultaneously decontextualizes poverty in the “developing world” from its multi-faceted roots in favor of a simple technological fix and precludes the possibility of anti-GMO sentiment that originates within the “developing world” itself. Focusing on India, I first shed light on the history of applying such simple technological fixes to the problem of hunger and then utilize textual analysis to explore varying perspectives on GMOs in order to make a case for why debates focusing on an objective “goodness” or “badness” of GMOs miss the point.

Abstract:
Geographical Information Systems (GIS) have become widely used for applications ranging from web mapping services to environmental modelling, as they provide a rich set of functions to solve different types of spatial problems. In the meantime, implementing GIS functions in an accurate and efficient manner has received attention, throughout the development of GIS technologies. This thesis describes the development and implementation of a novel geo-processing approach, namely Combinative Geoprocessing (CG), which is used to address data processing problems in GIS. The main purpose of the CG approach is to improve the data quality and efficiency of processing complex geo-processing models. Inspired by the concept of Map Calculus (Haklay, 2004), in the CG approach GIS layers are stored as functions and new layers are created through a combination of existing functions. The functional programming environment (Scheme programming language) is used in this research to implement the function-based layers in the CG approach. Furthermore, a set of computation rules is introduced in the new approach to enhance the performance of the function-based layers, such as the CG computation priority, which provides a way to improve the overall computation time of geo-processing. Three case studies, which involve different sizes of spatial data and different types of functions are investigated in this research in order to develop and implement the CG approach. The first case study compares Map Algebra and our approach for manipulating two different raster layers. The second case study focuses on the investigation of a combinative function through the implementation of the IDW and Slope functions. The final case is a study of computational efficiency using a complex chain processing model. Through designing the conceptual model of the CG approach and implementing the CG approach in the number of case studies, it was shown that the new approach provides many advantages for improving the data quality of geo-processing. Furthermore, the overall computation time of geo-processing could be reduced by using the CG approach as it provides a way to use computer resources efficiently and avoid redundant computations. Last but not least, this thesis identifies a new research direction for GIS computations and GIS software development, such as how a robust geo-processing tool with higher performance (i.e. data quality and efficiency) could be created using the CG approach.

Abstract:
The Master’s final paper on GMO discovered that the majority of respondents have no strong opinion about production and use of GMO, but one third of responses on production and use of GMO were negative. Many people consider that GMO not only negatively affect human health, but also damage environment. Moreover, eating genetically-modified food can irreversibly change human’s genetic code as well as irreversible mutations in plants’ and animals’ populations. However, some people tend to use GM foods because they are cheaper and can be stored longer than other foods. Even though some of the respondents see benefits of GMO production and usage, almost all of the respondents claim that genetically engineered products interest mostly large companies that are seeking to profit from GMO. The most obvious finding to emerge from this study is that people learn about GMO from mass media and communicating with friends and relatives mostly, but they also admit the lack of credible information on GMO. More than a half of the respondents would like to receive more information about genetically modified organisms.
