Panjaitan YK, Sucahyo, Rondonuwu FS. 2016. Guppy fish (Poecilia reticulata Peters) population structure in Gajah Putih River, Surakarta, Central Java. Bonorowo Wetlands 6: 103-109. The study of fish population structure is one strategy to know the condition of fish population and water pollution level in a waters area. Guppy fish (Poecilia reticulata Peters) can live in various conditions of water quality, especially in rivers. The Gajah Putih River flowing through Surakarta, Central Java is the habitat of guppy fish. The number of residential and factory activities that dump waste into the Gajah Putih River, causing a decrease in river water quality. Research on the population structure of Guppy fish in Gajah Putih river, Surakarta City was conducted between September and December 2014. Sampling was done purposively where the Guppy fish was found. There are 10 locations along the Gajah Putih River for sampling, each 300m away. At each location, a random sample of 30 fish was collected, then sorted by age and sex. There are also measurements of energy reserves in fish samples, as well as physical and chemical factors of water. Based on temperature, DO, pH TS and COD, the environmental conditions of the Gajah Putih River waters can still be tolerated by Guppy fish. The difference of environmental parameters between stations is relatively small, so it does not affect the difference of population structure of Guppy fish between stations.

Abstract:
Abstract Genetic and physical mapping of the guppy (Poecilia reticulata) have shown that recombination patterns differ greatly between males and females. Crossover events occur evenly across the chromosomes in females, but in male meiosis they are restricted to the tip furthest from the centromere of each chromosome, creating very high recombination rates per megabase, as in pseudoautosomal regions of mammalian sex chromosomes. We used GC content to indirectly infer recombination patterns on guppy chromosomes, based on evidence that recombination is associated with GC-biased gene conversion, so that genome regions with high recombination rates should be detectable by high GC content. We used intron sequences and third positions of codons to make comparisons between sequences that are matched, as far as possible, and are all probably under weak selection. Almost all guppy chromosomes, including the sex chromosome (LG12), have very high GC values near their assembly ends, suggesting high recombination rates due to strong crossover localization in male meiosis. Our test does not suggest that the guppy XY pair has stronger crossover localization than the autosomes, or than the homologous chromosome in the close relative, the platyfish (Xiphophorus maculatus). We therefore conclude that the guppy XY pair has not recently undergone an evolutionary change to a different recombination pattern, or reduced its crossover rate, but that the guppy evolved Y-linkage due to acquiring a male-determining factor that also conferred the male crossover pattern. We also identify the centromere ends of guppy chromosomes, which were not determined in the genome assembly.

Abstract:
The sex chromosome pairs of many species do not undergo genetic recombination, unlike the autosomes. It has been proposed that the suppressed recombination results from natural selection favouring close linkage between sex-determining genes and mutations on this chromosome with advantages in one sex, but disadvantages in the other (these are called sexually antagonistic mutations). No example of such selection leading to suppressed recombination has been described, but populations of the guppy display sexually antagonistic mutations (affecting male coloration), and would be expected to evolve suppressed recombination. In extant close relatives of the guppy, the Y chromosomes have suppressed recombination, and have lost all the genes present on the X (this is called genetic degeneration). However, the guppy Y occasionally recombines with its X, despite carrying sexually antagonistic mutations. We describe evidence that a new Y evolved recently in the guppy, from an X chromosome like that in these relatives, replacing the old, degenerated Y, and explaining why the guppy pair still recombine. The male coloration factors probably arose after the new Y evolved, and have already evolved expression that is confined to males, a different way to avoid the conflict between the sexes.

Abstract:
This study was carried out to evaluate the growth response of guppy Poecilia reticulata to different dietary protein levels. A total of 72 fry of guppy fish of an initial body weight 0.365± 0.01g were distributed randomly into 60 L aquaria at the density rate of 0.05 g/L. Fish were fed to satiation twice daily for eight weeks with diets containing different dietary protein levels (20%, 30%, or 40%.). The survival rate of guppy was unaffected by increasing dietary protein levels. At the end of the experiment, weight gains (g) ranging from 1.93 to 3.55 were obtained corresponding to 20% and 40% crude protein respectively. The growth performance and feeding efficiencies were significantly improved (P < 0.05) by increasing dietary protein levels. However, no significant difference (P > 0.05) was observed in the specific growth rate of fish that were fed 20% and 30% dietary protein levels. Abstract:
Abstract Guppy fish is one type of ornamental fish that has its charm where it has beautiful colours and a slender body shape. Male guppy fish are more attractive, have more beautiful colour patterns, longer tail fins, and a slimmer body than female guppies. Hence, their selling price is much higher and is in demand in the market in the ornamental fish industry. One way that can be done to produce male guppy fish is by using the sex reversal or masculinization method. The sex reversal method that can be used is to use a solution of young hybrid coconut water (Cocos nucifera) with different doses. The immersion process will affect the percentage of male sex in guppy fish because in the young coconut water solution there is a content of potassium which plays a role in the sex reversal process which functions to regulate testosterone regulation in the body and direct the work of androgens. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of young coconut water on the sex ratio of male guppies resulting from the immersion of female broodfish and to determine the best dose for the success rate of masculinization of guppy fish. The research was conducted from April to June 2020 in guppy fish farmers in Sidomulyo Village, East Ungaran District, Semarang Regency. The test animal used was the Black Moscow fish. This study used an experimental method with a completely randomized design of 4 treatments and 3 replications. Treatment of different immersion doses of young coconut water solution used were A (without immersion), B (40%), C (45%), D (50%). The data observed included the percentage of the male sex, survival rate and water quality. The results obtained from the research showed that the percentage value of male guppy fish was treated A (50.57 ± 3.48%), B (84.90 ± 2.55%), C (90.42 ± 1.67%), D (96.90 ± 1.34%). The results of the survival rate are treatment A (98.91 ± 0.95%), B (95.58 ± 2.48%), C (91.25 ± 3.46%), D 84.36 ± 3.62 %. The results of water quality observations were in the form of temperatures ranging from 26.9-28.9 ℃, pH (7.2-7.9), and DO ranging from 3.5-5.5 mg/ L. The conclusion was that immersion of young coconut water solution in pregnant guppy broods with different doses had a significant effect (P <0.05) on the percentage of the male sex. The best treatment was treatment D (50%) which resulted in the percentage value of male sex 96.90 ± 1.34%. Keywords: Black Moscow, potassium, masculinization, androgen hormone

Abstract:
Biological vector control by using larvivorous fish will be beneficial in reducing Aedes aegypti population, hence reducing risk of dengue virus transmission. It is important to select the larvivorous fish according to its digestive organ.Current study aimed to investigate the predation potential among the fish species and to identify the influence of the digestive tract length of the fish related to their predation potential. The research was an analytical observational study with post-test only design. Third stage larvae of Aedes aegypti were used as preys for tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus), common carper (Cyprinus carpio), and guppy (Poecillia reticulata). In association with their digestive tract length, predation potential of tilapia, common carper, and guppy showed statistical differences (P<0.05). Tilapia demonstrated highest predation of the larvae, followed by common carper and guppy. There are associations between difference in shapes of mouth and intestines, mouth width, intestinal length, and predation potential of these fish species. Current study results showed possible associations between digestive tract length of tilapia, common carper and guppy and predation potential on Aedes aegypti larvae, allowing these fish species to be used inbiological control of Aedes aegypti.

Abstract:
Abstract Theory predicts that the sexes can achieve greater fitness if loci with sexually antagonistic polymorphisms become linked to the sex determining loci, and this can favor the spread of reduced recombination around sex determining regions. Given that sex-linked regions are frequently repetitive and highly heterozygous, few complete Y chromosome assemblies are available to test these ideas. The guppy system (Poecilia reticulata) has long been invoked as an example of sex chromosome formation resulting from sexual conflict. Early genetics studies revealed that male color patterning genes are mostly but not entirely Y-linked, and that X-linkage may be most common in low-predation populations. More recent population genomic studies of guppies have reached varying conclusions about the size and placement of the Y-linked region. However, this previous work used a reference genome assembled from short-read sequences from a female guppy. Here, we present a new guppy reference genome assembly from a male, using long-read PacBio single-molecule real-time sequencing and chromosome contact information. Our new assembly sequences across repeat- and GC-rich regions and thus closes gaps and corrects mis-assemblies found in the short-read female-derived guppy genome. Using this improved reference genome, we then employed broad population sampling to detect sex differences across the genome. We identified two small regions that showed consistent male-specific signals. Moreover, our results help reconcile the contradictory conclusions put forth by past population genomic studies of the guppy sex chromosome. Our results are consistent with a small Y-specific region and rare recombination in male guppies.

Abstract:
We investigated the presence and possible function of chemical alarm signals (alarm pheromones) in wild Trinidadian guppies (Poecilia reticulata) using laboratory, trapping, and direct field observational methods. In laboratory experiments, female guppies from a population exposed to high predation significantly increased their shoaling, dashing, and freezing behaviours and significantly reduced area use when exposed to the skin extract of sympatric female guppies. When exposed to the skin extract of females from a low-predation population, female guppies from a high-predation population exhibited significant, though smaller, increases in antipredator behaviour. No significant differences in antipredator behaviours were noted when females were exposed to swordtail (Xiphophorus helleri) skin extract, which lacks any known alarm pheromone. We conducted two field experiments to confirm these laboratory results. In a trapping experiment, significantly more guppies were caught in funnel traps labelled with distilled water than in paired traps labelled with sympatric guppy skin extract. In a final experiment, a realistic model of a natural predator (pike cichlid, Crenicichla alta), paired with either sympatric guppy skin extract or distilled water, was presented to groups of free-ranging guppies in pools of a high-predation river. Significantly fewer guppies were observed within a 50-cm radius of the predator model and significantly fewer guppies inspected the model when it was paired with guppy skin extract versus distilled water. Taken together, our results strongly suggest the presence of a chemical alarm signal (alarm pheromone) in the Trinidadian guppy, establish the validity of laboratory and trapping studies in the investigation of chemical alarm signalling, and demonstrate that alarm pheromones may function to mediate predation risk under natural conditions in the guppy.

Abstract:
We report construction of a genetic linkage map of the guppy genome using 790 single nucleotide polymorphism markers, integrated from six mapping crosses. The markers define 23 linkage groups (LGs), corresponding to the known haploid number of guppy chromosomes. The map, which spans a genetic length of 899 cM, includes 276 markers linked to expressed genes (expressed sequence tag), which have been used to derive broad syntenic relationships of guppy LGs with medaka chromosomes. This combined linkage map should facilitate the advancement of genetic studies for a wide variety of complex adaptive phenotypes relevant to natural and sexual selection in this species. We have used the linkage data to predict quantitative trait loci for a set of variable male traits including size and colour pattern. Contributing loci map to the sex LG for many of these traits.

Abstract:
The guppy ( Poecilia reticulata ) is a model species in ecology and evolution. Many studies have examined effects of predators on guppy behaviour, reproduction, survival strategies, feeding and other life-history traits, but few have studied variation in their parasite diversity. We surveyed parasites of 18 Trinidadian populations of guppy, to provide insight on the geographical mosaic of parasite variability, which may act as a source of natural selection acting on guppies. We found 21 parasite species, including five new records for Trinidad. Spatial variation in parasite diversity was significantly higher than that of piscine predators, and significant variation in parasite richness among individuals and populations was correlated with: (i) host size, (ii) snail species richness, and (iii) the distance between populations. Differences in parasite species richness are likely to play an important, yet underestimated role in the biology of this model species of vertebrate ecology and evolution.

Abstract:
The taxonomy of the common guppy, Poecilia reticulata Peters, 1859, is reviewed and the closely related Campoma guppy, P. wingei n. sp., is described. Formerly, the common guppy was not judged to be closely related to any other species of Poecilia, but the new species is the second species to be allocated in the subgenus Acanthophacelus Eigenmann, 1907. The recognition of P. wingei results from observed character displacement, i.e., on the interaction between two closely related species in a shared environment. In addition to differences in coloration, behaviour also indicates specific differences. The area in which P. wingei occurs, the Campoma region at the base of the Paría Peninsula in Venezuela, hints to an origin of the subgenus Acanthophacelus prior to the uplift of the Cordilleras, i.e., the eastern orogenesis of the Andes. Moreover, an explanation is offered for aberrant molecular data in Trinidadian guppies.

A study was carried out to investigate the effects of background color on the growth, skin pigmentation and breeding performances of guppy, Poecilia reticulata. Guppy fish was reared in tanks with four different colors as treatments such as T0 (transparent), T1 (red), T3 (blue) and T4 (green) for 5 months. There were significant differences in growth and coloration among the treatments. The growth performance was found significantly higher in transparent background compared to the other treatments. The results showed that the highest mean weight (0.259 ±0.018 g), mean length (3.067±0.208 cm) and SGR (0.165±0.012) of the fish were significantly higher in T0. Least mean weight (0.167± 0.025 g), mean length (2.53±.0.058 cm) and SGR (0.104±0.017) were observed in T1 indicating association of red color with slower growth performance of guppy, compared to other treatments. Study showed significant influence of background color in skin pigmentation. Fishes reared in transparent tanks showed the highest value of carotenoid (0.00175±0.00004mg/g) and fishes reared in the red tank showed the lowest value of carotenoid (0.00092±0.000035 mg/g). Green background enhanced red orange color on fish skin and provided high amount of carotenoid value (0.00143±0.000046 mg/g) than that with blue (0.00095±0.000025 mg/g). These results suggest significant influence of background color on growth and skin pigmentation patterns of Guppy.

Abstract:
SUMMARYParasites typically have low reproductive fitness on paratenic hosts. Such hosts offer other significant inclusive fitness benefits to parasites, however, such as increased mobility and migration potential. The parasite fauna of the guppy (Poecilia reticulata) is dominated by the directly transmitted ectoparasites Gyrodactylus bullatarudis and Gyrodactylus turnbulli. In the wild, close predatory and competitive interactions occur between the guppy and the killifish Rivulus hartii. Previous observations suggest that these fish can share gyrodactylids, so we tested experimentally whether these parasites can use R. hartii as an alternative host. In aquaria, G. bullatarudis was the only species able to transmit from prey to predator. Both parasite species transferred equally well to prey when the predator was experimentally infected. However, in semi-natural conditions, G. bullatarudis transmitted more successfully to the prey fish. Importantly, G. bullatarudis also survived significantly longer on R. hartii out of water. As R. hartii can migrate overland between isolated guppy populations, G. bullatarudis may have an enhanced ability to disperse and colonize new host populations, consistent with its wider distribution in the wild. To our knowledge, this is the first empirical study demonstrating a predator acting as a paratenic host for the parasites of its prey.

Abstract:
Guppies are ornamental fish that have economic value and can be cultivated. One of the problems in guppies cultivation is the poor quality of body color. The solution to this problem is to improve the environmental quality in guppy aquaculture. This study evaluates changes in color quality, behavioral response, and blood glucose levels of guppies using water immersion of Indian almond leaves on rearing media. Study was carried out using a completely randomized design consisting of five treatments. The rearing media was filled water with a total volume of 10 L from each treatment with different concentrations, namely, Control treatment (100% freshwater), A (75% freshwater + 25% Indian almond leaf water), B (50% freshwater + 50% Indian almond leaf), C (25% freshwater + 75% Indian almond leaf) and D (100% Indian almond leaf). Each treatment observed several test parameters such as color quality percentage, survival rate, chromatophores cells number, behavior, glucose levels, and the water physical-chemical parameters. Guppies' behavioral responses, in general, experienced an increasing change in each treatment for seven days. The highest color quality percentage by treatment D was 73.93±2.29%, and the highest glucose level was by the control treatment, which was 24.11±0.41 mg dL-1. The results of variance analysis showed that the water immersion of Indian almond leaves was significantly different on color quality, behavioral response, and blood glucose levels through Duncan's test (p<0.05). Abstrak Ikan guppy termasuk ikan hias yang memiliki nilai ekonomis dan dapat dibudidayakan. Salah satu masalah dalam budidaya ikan guppy yaitu kualitas warna tubuhnya yang tidak bagus. Abstract:
Abstract Acetes is a marine shrimp that is still an under-studied source as feed ingredient for tropical ornamental fish. Ornamental fish is regarded as pet fish due to its mystic attractiveness for pet fish enthusiasts and requires good protein source to attain good growth and skin colour enhancement. The prevailing feed industry due to continuos pandemic has resulted many enthusiasts to look for alternative growth promoter as feed for guppy. The aims of this study were to determine the nutritional composition in dried Acetes and to investigate the effects of dietary dried Acetes meal on growth performance of Guppy (Poecilia reticulate). Five dietary isocaloric feeds namely Tcontrol (commercial feed only), T0 (100% commercial feed and 0% of dried Acetes.), T1 (75% commercial diet and 25% of dried Acetes spp.), T2 (50% commercial diet and 50% of dried Acetes), T3 (25% commercial diet and 75% of dried Acetes) and T4 (0% commercial diet and 100% of dried Acetes) were formulated as feed for juveniles of Guppy (Poecilia reticulata) reared in triplicates for 30 days. Growth indices like Body Weight Gain, Feed Conversion Rate, Feed Intake and Survival Rate were observed in every 10 days. Results indicated that T4 with 100% dried Acetes attained a significantly high BWG of 222.6% with low feed intake and FCR of less than 3.5. It can be concluded that inclusion of 50 to 100% dried Acetes in feed has contributed to optimal growth performance of guppy. It is also recommended that further studies on dietary Acetes could be done to examine other properties that could be further developed as superfeed for ornamental fish and thereby enhance growth and productivity of the ornamental fish industry as well as economic efficiency.

Abstract:
During the transition from dry season to rainy season or vice versa, very high temperature fluctuations often occur, causing large number of deaths in guppy fish farming. The death of this guppy fish is also triggered by water conditions that are not maintained. Therefore, a system that can monitor water conditions in real time without being limited by distance, and that can cope the drastic temperature changes is needed. If water conditions can be monitored in real time, of course, the guppy fish in aquarium or tank will become healthier, well-maintained and will produce the best quality guppy fish. For this reason, the researcher makes a system that is able to monitor the condition of water in the aquarium to reduce the number of deaths in guppies. The researcher conducts trials using Fuzzy Mamdani method of three input variables from water temperature sensor, pH sensor and turbidity sensor which defuzzification result shows crips output value at 44.63. That result puts water condition in “Fair” level, and when it is matched with the calculation result of matlab r2013a using Fuzzy Mamdani, the result is 44.8 which is not far different. The result of this study is a smart fish farm system that can monitor water conditions in aquariums or tanks, such as: feeding time, checking and controlling temperature, monitoring water pH, monitoring water turbidity levels, lights control that can automatically turn on and off with room lighting indicators, and drain when the water is turbid. This smart fish farm system is made with an Arduino microcontroller that is connected to the internet based on Internet of Things (IoT) and the Mamdani Fuzzy Logic method. This smart fish farm system can also store records with platforms from Thingspeak and MitApp for the mobile applications making.

Abstract:
The guppy (Poecilia reticulata) is one of the world’s most popular ornamental fish. Due to lecithotrophic viviparous, it is commonly used in toxicological studies and environmental monitoring. This study aimed to investigate the molecular mechanisms of gonad development and differentiation during guppy ontogenesis. The study mainly focused on the role and localization of potential specific sex markers and transcription factors: Sox9, Dmrt1, Erβ. For histological analysis, guppies of both sexes were collected at 1, 60, and 360 dph (day post-hatching). The gonads morphology and immunohistochemistry detection of mentioned markers localization were performed. The expression of Sox9 protein was compared between sexes. Histological analysis revelated all types of male germinal cells in 60 dph guppy’s testes. Maturated oocytes were visible in the ovaries of 360 dph fish. The Sox9 expression varied in spermatocytes and spermatids, from cellular to nuclear localization, and was higher in ovaries. Dmrt1 was detected in all testes groups and 360 dph ovaries. The Erβ was observed in both sexes at 60 and 360 dph. For the first time, the localization of transcription factors in guppy during ontogenesis was traced. The Sox9 designation as a factor regulating the development of germinal cells in adult guppies may facilitate the analysis of xenobiotics’ influence on fish’s reproductive system.

Abstract:
In this study, the effects of Artemia sp. nauplii and micro capsulated feed on growth performance and survival rate of guppy (Poecilia reticulata) and goldfish (Carassius auratus) larvae were compared at the end of three weeks of rearing period. Length of goldfish larvae (4.82 mm) fed Artemia sp. (from 4 to 12/mL/day) were between 7.97 and 9.76 mm at the end of the trial while these values were between 6.80 and 7.21 mm for those fed microencapsulated feed (from 10 to 30 mg/L/day). On the other hand length of guppy larvae fed Artemia sp. (from 5 to 25/mL/day) were between 13.02 and 17.00 mm, whereas these values were remained between 11.98 and 12.38 mm for those fed microencapsulated feed (from 10 to 40 mg/L/day). A similar result was also observed in survival rates. Survival rate of goldfish larvae fed Artemia sp. were 88.91-97.61% in while those fed microencapsulated feed were 6.19-87.14%. On the other hand survival rate of guppy larvae fed Artemia sp. were 99.17-100.00% whereas those fed microencapsulated feed were 57.50-87.50%. Eventually, microencapsulated feed was not as successful as Artemia sp. on the growth and survival rate of larvae of both species.

Abstract:
The breeding biology of guppy fish, Poecilia reticulata (Cyprinodontiformes: Poiciliidae) was studied during March 2008 to May 2009 in ‘Zoological garden laboratory’, Curzon Hall campus, Dhaka University. Guppy bred all over the year except in the winter months December and January with a peak period in July. They were viviparous and multiple breeders, i.e., give birth to fry several times in the breeding season. The mean egg diameter was measured to be (1.02±0.08mm) and fecundity was estimated (40-89) per gram of body weight. The gestation period ranged 25-35 days with an average of 28.1±2.12 days. Developmental stages observed under a compound microscope were classified based on the changes in the developing eye, such as optic cup, early-eyed, middle-eyed, late-eyed, very late-eyed etc. It was noticed that tail portion comes out first at birth. The number of fry per brood ranged from 12 to 60. New born fries were observed with transparent or blackish in colour having slender body with jaws developed on mouth and were fully capable of swimming, eating, and avoiding danger. Guppy grew rapidly, attained sexual maturity at 8 -10 weeks and reached full size in 6 months. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.3329/jasbs.v39i2.17866 J. Asiat. Soc. Abstract:
Identification of genes that control variation in adaptive characters is a prerequisite for understanding the processes that drive sexual and natural selection. Male coloration and female colour perception play important roles in mate choice of the guppy, a model organism for studies of natural and sexual selection. We examined a potential source for the known variation in colour perception, by analysing genomic and complementary DNA sequences of genes that code for visual pigment proteins. We find high sequence variability, both within and between populations, and expanded copy number for long-wave sensitive (LWS) opsin genes. Alleles with non-synonymous changes that suggest dissimilar spectral tuning properties occur in the same population and even in the same individual, and the high frequency of non-synonymous substitutions argues for diversifying selection acting on these proteins. Therefore, variability in tuning amino acids is partitioned within individuals and populations of the guppy, in contrast to variability for LWS at higher taxonomic levels in cichlids, a second model system for differentiation owing to sexual selection. Since opsin variability parallels the extreme male colour polymorphism within guppy populations, we suggest that mate choice has been a major factor driving the coevolution of opsins and male ornaments in this species.

Abstract:
Deploying mosquito predators such as the guppy ( Poecilia reticulata ) into bodies of water where mosquitoes breed is a common strategy for limiting the spread of disease-carrying mosquitoes. Here, we draw on studies from epidemiology, conservation, ecology and evolution to show that the evidence for the effectiveness of guppies in controlling mosquitoes is weak, that the chances of accidental guppy introduction into local ecosystems are large, and that guppies can easily establish populations and damage these aquatic ecosystems. We highlight several knowledge and implementation gaps, and urge that this approach is either abandoned in favour of more effective strategies or that it is used much more rigorously. Controlling mosquitoes does not need to come at the expense of freshwater biodiversity.
