Abstract:
For more than two thousand years, the collection of poetry simply referred to as the Shi Jing, (“The Classic of Poetry”, “Book of Odes” or “Book of Songs”), has shaped the Chinese literary landscape. The classic is one of the central influences on the development of later Chinese poetry, and can appropriately be considered a major contributor to the habits of expression, imagery and structure which remained dominant until the nineteenth century.

Abstract:
This research investigated Chinese as second language (CSL) learner’s willingness to communicate (WTC) both inside and outside classroom in one of international schools, Hong Kong. The research objects are 170 Chinese Language B learners from an English School Foundation (ESF) international school. The main methodology adopted here was quantitative method. Classroom observations by researcher and self-reports by students were firstly done to collect background data, and then five scales were employed to do the main investigation, including a WTC Inside–the-classroom Scales (WTCIS), a WTC Outside-the-classroom Scale (WTCOS), a Language Anxiety Scale (LAS), a Motivation Scale (MS) and a Self-perceived Communicative Competence Scale (SCCS). The research objectives were to explore the general situation of CSL learners’ WTC, and the specific characteristics as well as possible differences of their WTC inside and outside the classroom; then to further examine the possible affecting variables from both background and psychological perspectives including gender, age, Chinese language proficiency, mother tongue, social support, personality and attitudes towards learning Chinese, which were regarded as background variables, and language anxiety, motivation and self-perceived communicative competence, which were regarded as psychological variables. After that, data was processed and analyzed by SPSS 19.0 for hypothesis verification. Finally, pedagogical implications on how to improve CSL learners’ WTC both inside and outside classroom were generalized from the study. The major findings showed that: (1) the general WTC of CSL learners from this school were slightly on the low side, between the Lower and Middle level, and the WTC inside the classroom was comparatively higher than outside of classroom. (2) On overall WTC, there was no significant difference between male and female students. But inside the classroom, girls were more likely to ask questions and pay more attention on language details than boys, while boy were more active to be the presenters and voice out in public. Outside the classroom, boys were more willing to communicate with strangers or chat online with friends in Chinese. (3) No significant WTC difference was found between Diploma Program (DP) and Middle Years Program (MYP), but DP CSL learners showed more willingness to make public speech, to be more of an inquirer in problems, and to do more generalization in speaking. (4) Among DP group, significant positive correlation was found between language proficiency and WTC, suggesting that the more proficient CSL learners showed higher WTC, and vice versa. (5) The more proficient group were more willing to speak Chinese voluntarily than the less proficient ones, implying that the more competent language learners are more likely to the take the initiative in communication. (6) CSL learners with more social supports to learn Chinese showed higher WTC, and a significant positive correlation was found here. (7) Students with Cantonese as mother tongue had higher WTC than their English as mothertougue counterparts, and this difference was more obviously outside of classroom. (8) Extroverted students showed significantly higher WTC inside of the classroom than the introverted. (9) Students who liked learning Chinese demonstrated higher WTC than those who didn’t. (10) Students’ motivation to learn Chinese and their SPCC were both on the high side, and both correlated positively on WTC, with motivation correlated more closely on outside WTC while SPCC more on inside WTC. Students showed slight lower anxiety level in speaking Chinese. Anxiety had significant negative correlation with WTC, and it mattered more inside than outside of classroom. No matter for WTC inside or outside, SPCC was the most predictive variable among the three.

The oil production in Brazil has been increasing each year. Consequently, increasing volumes of water produced are generated with large quantities of contaminants, which brings many problems in disposing of these waters. The concern that the concentrations of contaminants in water produced meet existing laws for disposal of effluents, has been extremely important for the development of different techniques for treatment of water produced. The study of clay minerals as adsorbents of organic contaminants has grown considerably so in order to combine the low cost with the efficiency of environmental preservation and health issues. Thus, this study aims to understand the characteristics of vermiculite clay, sodium bentonite, calcium bentonite and diatomite and evaluate their performance as adsorbents for phenol in the water produced. Through adsorption isotherms it was possible to observe the behavior of these adsorptive clay and diatomite for adsorption of phenol, the main phenolic compound found in water produced. Different concentrations of synthetic solutions of phenol were put in touch with these adsorbents under same conditions of agitation and temperature. The adsorbents were composted adsorptive favorable, but the vermiculite and diatomite showed little capacity for absorption, being suggested for absorbs small concentrations of phenol in the balance isothermal

This work study of solar distillation feasibility in effluent of petroleum industry: produced water, making possible your reuse for irrigation of oleaginous cultures or fodder crops or in steam generation, as well the transport phenomena involved. The methodology for development of this project was to characterize the effluent to be treated and to accomplish physical and chemical analysis in the distilled, to build distillation equipment, concomitant operation of both equipments and implementation of data processing and economical evaluation. The methodology used for all parameters is outlined in APHA (1998) and sampling of the type compound. The feeding of distillation equipment was performed with treated effluent from UTPF of Guamar?. The temperature was monitored throughout the distillers and during the time of operation. The distillers feed occur, as a rule, for sifon. The distillers were operated by a period of 17 months between July 2007 and February 2009, in which 40 experiments were performed. The radiation and temperature datas were acquired in the INPE s site and the temperature inside of the distillers was registered by DATALOGGER Novus. The rates of condensation (mL / min) were determined by measuring of the flow in a graduate test tube of 10 mL and a chronometer. We used two simple solar effect distillers of passive type with different angles in coverage: 20 ? and 45 ?. The results obtained in this study and the relevant discussions are divided into six topics: sample characterization and quality of distilled; construction of distillers; operation (data, temperature profile), climatic aspects, treatment of data and economical analysis. Results obtained can be inferred that: the energy loss by the adoption of vessel glass was not significant, however, complicates the logistics of maintenance the equipment on a large scale. In the other hand, the surface of the tub with a glass shield on the equipment deterioration, both devices showed similar performance, so there is not justified for use of equipment 450. With regard to the climatological study it was verified that the Natal city presents monthly medium radiation varying in a range between 350 and 600 W/m2, and medium of wind speed of 5 m / s. The medium humidity is around 70% and rainfall is very small. The regime of the system is transient and although it has been treated as a stationary system shows that the model accurately represents the distillers system's 20 degrees. The quality of the distilled with regard to the parameters evaluated in this study is consistent with the Class 3 waters of CONAMA (Resolution 357). Therefore we can conclude that solar distillation has viability for treat oilfield produced water when considered the technical and environmental aspects, although it is not economically viable

At the same time, the localization awareness and cross disciplinary artworks has been developed in Taiwan in recent years. In order to show the nationality or the national characteristic, localization artworks make great strides forward to the world. However, the locality fusion jazz which improvising with the familiar music element. A new cross-cultural aesthetics has becoming an important role in the development of music in Taiwan. Therefore, the issues such as aesthetic criteria transform of music, functions of music and the cultural identity of music and so on, all need to be reviewed and rethought. This research aims to analyze the work - " Wang Chuen Feng "," Ching Ke Sau"," Tau Hua Guo Du " in Jazz Erhu, through the analysis to see the significance and value of folk songs of Fusion Jazz in Taiwan. In conclusion, this research aimed to explore the music characteristics through the case study of Jazz Erhu, the work is combines with Taiwan Folksongs, Jazz and Arabic music, to observe the aesthetic characteristics of cross-cultural, and to analyze the cultural identity, musical interpretation. Second, as the aesthetic viewpoint, the Taiwan Folksong is the objective, however, as the musical technic viewpoint, the different cultures are biased on equally emphasized. Hence, the different cross-cultural interpretations are produced from different angles and attitude to listen the same work, that is not able to interpret from the existing judgment to standardize the aesthetic criterion. Therefore, the cross-cultural works nowadays presents diverse and integrated things and meanings.

The purpose of the research is about Guo-Feng junior high in Hualien County without huge impacts under the serious decreasing birth rate. Instead, Guo-Feng is the only population explosion school of the four in Hualien City by the number of students every year from elementary schools to junior high schools. By exploring four junior high schools in Hualien City about school attendance areas, we show the information and make an objective analysis and comparison. Through the questionnaire survey method and the in-depth interview, understanding the school attendance areas and the school competitive advantage is the factors of selecting school for the students from their parents. The questionnaire survey method is the target for the students’ parents in Guo-Feng junior high. 401 questionnaires were distributed and 362 were recognized as valid with a response of 90.3%. With the in-depth interview, understand the principal how to lead the school team and manage the school. The results are summarized as follows: 1. Under the regular school attendance areas in Hualien City, as for parents’ education level, Guo-Feng junior high is not in the good location. As the result, principal’s leadership, school administrative service, teachers’ professions and students’ performance are so important for school competitive advantage. 2. During Principal Wu in Guo-Feng junior high for 12 years, she actively developed school affairs and made it become only one population explosion school over ten years. That is, no matter what students’ parents’ genders, ages, or educations, they all agree with the effects of managing school, teachers’ professional ability and teaching quality, the school style, and the students’ behaviors. 3. Students’ parents account for 45.6% to change their registered permanent residences for studying in Guo-Feng. 4. The first three school factors of parents’ choices are : (1) School traditional good spirits and reputations. (2) Traffic or convenience for picking up children.(3) The school scale and the school style. 5. Being willing to recommend your friends’ kids to study in Guo-Feng and satisfying with the whole school are all above average.

The first chapter elaborates on research objectives, motives and approaches and introduces and analyzes concerning essays on Gui Sen Yang’s contributions to historic monuments in Changhua County. The second chapter explains Feng-shui concept in Chinese society and how culture travels between Fujian and Guandong, for further introduction of Taiwanese Feng-shui origins. The third chapter analyzes Gui Sen Yang’s general profile in historical materials and discusses how Gui Sen Yang’s geomancy legends spread and passed down. Based on documents and references as well as field investigation, I am able to materialize the legend circle and core of these legends and explain the organization of them. Due to multiple versions of copies, I mainly discuss Yang’s contribution and exploits to historic monuments in Changhua County and concerning legends to understand its whole structure and profound meaning. The fourth chapter is to analyze Chinese opera. Since concerning pieces are all manuscripts, I explain Taiwanese opera and hand puppet show in vernacular language to explicitly indicate the content and theme which dramatists want to convey; moreover, by comparing various copies of opera, we are able to tell their differences. The fifth chapter aims at comparing copies between historical materials and operas to analyze the plot and genre of legends, which makes it possible to find out the prototype of Gui Sen Yang’s geomancy legends and the cultural significance behind the works. The sixth chapter generalizes the chapters above and comes to a conclusion.

Duan Yu-cai spent a lot of spirits to focus on annotating “Shuo Wen Jie Zi”, and he accomplished the greatest works which are admired by scholars. After “Shuo Wen Jie Zi” published, it prevailed deep and widely. It turned into the scripture and the scholars had to read it if they researched “Shuo Wen.” The research of “Shuo Wen Duan Zhu” also became the mode; the special works of renewing and correcting were published in succession. The most valuable works which was corrected and renewed “Shuo Wen Duan Zhu” by Feng Gui-fen is “Shuo Wen Jie Zi Duan Zhu Kao Zheng”, it was helpful for “Shuo Wen Dan Zhu.” Duan Yu-cai based Xu Xuan’s works on annotating “Shuo Wne”, and adopted Xu Kai’s works as the first-hand data to correct it. Duan Yu-cai didn’t explain that which parts he annotated it according to Xu Xuan’s works, which parts that he corrected it follow, or he didn’t follow both of them but depended on ancient books. Feng Gui-fen started to collate because he/ she wanted to know what Duan Yu-cai depended on, Xu Xuan’s or Xu Kai’s, when he annotated “Shuo Wen”, and also want to have a grasp of the reference among “Shuo Wen Duan Zhu”, Xu Xuan and Xu Kai. This article went by the title of “The research of “Shuo Wen Jie Zi Duan Zhu Kao Zheng” which was collated by Feng Gui-fen”. There are six chapters: the first chapter is exordium, we explain the motive, the range, the methods of the research, and then, we introduce the glancing situation of the predecessors’ research. We introduce the background of Feng Gui-fen, and relate the content of “Shuo Wen Jie Zi Duan Zhu Kao Zheng” simply in the second chapter. We compare and contrast Xu Xuan’s works, Xu Kai’s works, the works which was annotated by Duan Yu-cai, and the works which was collated by Feng Gui-fen verbally, analyze them, and generalize them; we also inspect the works which was collated by Feng Gui-fen is correct or not in the third and fourth chapters. We discuss the result which was collated by Feng Gui-fen, and the parts which were needed to correct; we illustrate advantages and disadvantages about “Shuo Wen Jie Zi Duan Zhu Kao ZHeng” in the fifth chapter. The sixth chapter is conclusion, we cite the judgment which was propounded by the predecessors, and then we discourse upon the evidence which was based by Duan Yu-cai when he annotated the works. It exhibits the achievement and the effect of “ Shuo Wen Jie Zi Duan Zhu Kao Zheng”, and proves that “Shuo Wen Jie Zi Duan Zhu Kao Zheng” which was authored by Feng Gui-fen is important to the research of “Shuo Wen Duan Zhu.”

Abstract:
This thesis presents a biographical study of the Tang Dynasty monk Gui-feng Zong-mi (780-841) together with an introduction to his thought. The biography contained herein draws upon original biographical and autobiographical sources to provide as complete a picture of the life of Zong-mi as possible within the scope of this thesis. Zong-mi defied categorization in both the manner in which he lived his life and his religious philosophy. He is simultaneously honored as a patriarch in both the Chan and Hua-yan Schools of Buddhism, while also being well-versed in the Confucian classics. As a model of Chinese Buddhist syncretism, he was able to create harmonious interaction between rival schools and religious systems in his writings and his practice. With a foot in both the exegetical and meditative traditions, Zong-mi was able to combine the best of both approaches to Buddhist religious life and philosophy. A native of Sichuan, Zong-mi entered Buddhism through the He-ze lineage of Southern Chan. He first experienced awakening while reading a passage from the Yuan-jue jing and pledged himself to explicating that text. After encountering the writings of the Fourth Hua-yan Patriarch, Cheng-guan, Zong-mi sought him out and changed his affiliation to Huayan. He maintained close ties with the Chan tradition, because he perceived the exegetical and meditative approaches were complementary. Zong-mi enjoyed a prosperous career and received numerous honors, including the purple robe granted by the emperor. Following his involvement in the Sweet Dew Incident of 835, he disappeared from view. Zong-mi was primarily driven by soteriological concerns. More specifically, he worked to develop a doctrinal basis for meditative practice and his major contributions to Chinese Buddhist thought lie in this area. The model which he developed drew from the Hua-yan vision of the harmonious interpenetration of principle and phenomena, and he used this as a basis for Chan meditative practice. This model, advocating sudden enlightenment followed by gradual cultivation, was based on his understanding of the tathagatagarbha doctrine of the Awakening of Faith.

The cat family animal is one kind of animal combined mystery、beauty、elegance、and cruelness perfectly. Based on the likeness to the cat family、especially the tigers、and the likeness to the nature、I like to wonder freely and leisurely in mountains and forests. By the thoughts that the maintenance of the ecological environment should be paid more attention to and the appeal of the protection to animals should not be ignored. I hope my personal creations can make more people care more about some endangered cat family animals. Then the existence of the animal species can be continuous and constant. The procreation of natural life can go on and on forever. Secondly, during my school years of college and graduate school,I was influence deeply by the paintings of professor Ou Hua-Nian. “Zhuang-zi’s Trial on His Wife” was a relatively antique story that has been passed down for countless generations without suffering from decrepitude. Scriptwriters from past generations kept adapting the story, and contemporary scriptwriters also infused it with lots of modern awareness and viewpoints. Therefore, trace of how times evolved and how ideas made progress could be understood through these scripts. This thesis is intended as an investigation of the development of the story,“Zhuang-zi’s Trial on His Wife”, at that period of time. First, the story itself, variations, and development of the story are studied, followed by four scripts adapted by Si Song, Wei Zih-Yun, Wu Jhao-Fen, and Gao Sing-Jian. Detailed analysis of these scripts is conducted respectively; at last, the scripts are compared and inducted to manifest their individual features. In “A Butterfly Dream” by Si Song, Zhuang-zi and four women constructed the backbone of the story, infused with part of reality of the contemporary society; the entire play presented a relaxing and funny style; concerning “A Newly-adapted Butterfly Dream” by Wei Zih-Yun, the arrangement of several specific dreamlands in the story were prominent plots, it also carried a number of philosophic concepts in “Zhuang-zi”. It was the life perspective of the adapter that made the plots an happy ending of great reunion; regarding “A Butterfly Dream” by Wu Jhao-Fen, a brand new style appeared due to innovative conception, reshaped characters, and script adaptation; As for “The Nether World” by Gao Sing-Jian, lots of its content were miniatures of the real world, making the play obscure and murky. If we compare these various versions in terms of “the motives of the trial on his wife”, “core characters”, “key plots” and “meanings conveyed”, it could be inferred that various motives caused the scripts to have different development; meanwhile, they also allowed the scripts to present diverse thinking while meanings were being conveyed. In addition, contemporary scriptwriters could make use of the content of “Zhuang-zi” and adapted it for new plots, equipping new scripts with both inheritance and innovation; thereby further exhibited various features of respective scripts.

The research objective of the article is Chen Zhu’s composition the Poetry that “Dai Fen Shi Gao”. Chen Zhu has been the professor and chairman of Soochow University, The Great China University in Shanghai, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, and National Central University in Nanjing. He devoted his life to education and knowledge and made use of it to help China. In the period full of civil wars, he didn’t have enough ability to be a soldier to save China, but wrote down more than one thousand poems about wars to record the situations of the era. Through his poems, we can know the business groups and refugees who were busy retreating still helped people around them. Take Chen Zhu’s son, Chen I-bai for example, he also became a refugee in the civil war, and he was helped by other refugees, too. In Chen Zhu’s poems about wars, we can know that the themes of the poems are about conditions full of the wars and the love between him and his son. Take one of the poems that he wrote for his son in the Kiangsu-Chekiang War for instance, the poem shows his ideal to save the country that he sent his son to University of Nanking in the warzone to learn western cultures, not to the college in his hometown. A traditional Chinese father always hopes his son can do something to make his family be famous, but Chen Zhu expected his son to use knowledge to make compositions to save the country. Furthermore, in their writings, we seem to experience the difficult conditions they were, like the scenes from Nanjing to Wuxi. It was hard for Chen I-bai to go back to his hometown to visit his father. It was like a dream that they finally could meet again. In the poem, they recorded their feelings and words they spoke filled with difficulties, bitterness and sweet. Moreover, they also recorded positions of their hometown and the schools where they have taught. Chen Zhu’ poems help readers feel the strong love between he and his son and the positions of the civil wars while the readers are reading his poems. That shows Chen Zhu plays an important role in the literature history or the poem history of being a Bei-Liu poet. The existent researches about Chen Zhu seldom focus on the interaction between him and his children. Furthermore, he lived in the period of civil wars, so it was hard for people to protect Chen Zhu writings. That’s why there are few researches about Chen Zhu, and the themes of those limited researches put emphasis on his life, and his academic achievement, not on the interaction between him and his son. Actually, in Chen Zhu composition the Poetry that “Dai Fen Shi Gao”, we know his expectation and sincere love for his son by writing more one hundred poems to his son Beginning to analyze the ethnics, the scenes of the Kiangsu-Chekiang War in more than Chen Zhu’s poems written to his son, Chen I-bai, I also try to analyze the love between father and son and the concern Chen Zhu showed for the benefaction of business groups and the suffering of the refugees in the poems. Chen Zhu also wrote some poems about World War 2 to record the scenes about the period when the Japanese invaded Chna. He also wrote poems to admire Americans and Korean’s generous and kind mind. He imitated Chinese writer Sima Qian to show his unique international perspective. The paper refers to the Chen Zhu’s life, his important deeds and his teachers to know the origin of this academic theory. The paper also focus on the poet, Feng Chen in the same period as Chen Zhu’s, and I also write down the interaction between Chen Zhu and Feng Chen to illustrate importance of them in the literature history. Their writings usually show their concern for the country and the society.

"The structure of ownership in family firms." Thesis, 2010. http://library.cuhk.edu.hk/record=b6075291.

Full text
Abstract:
Prior literature focuses on the causes and effects of ownership concentration between significant blockholders and minority shareholders. Anecdotal evidence shows that it is also important to look at the causes and effects of ownership concentration within controlling families as family ownership can become diffused after generations. Family trust is a popular vehicle for holding family ownership. It allows a founder to concentrate firm ownership on a long-term basis, preventing control loss after he/she steps down. Family members can enjoy control benefits such as preservation of their family intangible assets. However, there is tradeoff. Family members cannot resolve their conflicts by acquiring and selling off shares among them, since they are no longer the legal owners of the shares.
Using a sample of 216 family firms listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange with time series data spanning 1990--2008, I investigate the causes and effects of ownership concentration by means of family trust. I fmd that when family control is important (when there exists a large amount of family intangibles), there is a higher propensity that family trust is used to concentrate ownership and secure control, provided that the cost of using it is low (small family size hence low family conflict). However, when there are more and more family members after generations, the benefit of preserving the intangibles may not be high enough to cover the cost of potential family conflict, leading to firm value loss. Moreover, the cost of using trust magnifies during difficult periods such as financial distress, economic downturn and leadership succession. Hence, firms with high potential family conflict have poorer performance during difficult time if family trust is used for holding the firm's controlling stake. Family trust also induces common pool problem. Family members tend to extract resources from the family firm as much and as early as possible, leading to higher payout and slower firm growth.
