Abstract:
AbstractLet G be a graph on n ≥ 3 vertices. A graph G is almost distance-hereditary if each connected induced subgraph H of G has the property dH(x, y) ≤ dG(x, y) + 1 for any pair of vertices x, y ∈ V(H). Adopting the terminology introduced by Broersma et al. and Čada, a graph G is called 1-heavy if at least one of the end vertices of each induced subgraph of G isomorphic to K1,3 (a claw) has degree at least n/2, and is called claw-heavy if each claw of G has a pair of end vertices with degree sum at least n. In this paper we prove the following two theorems: (1) Every 2-connected, claw-heavy and almost distance-hereditary graph is Hamiltonian. (2) Every 3-connected, 1-heavy and almost distance-hereditary graph is Hamiltonian. The first result improves a previous theorem of Feng and Guo [J.-F. Feng and Y.-B. Guo, Hamiltonian cycle in almost distance-hereditary graphs with degree condition restricted to claws, Optimazation57 (2008), no. 1, 135–141]. For the second result, its connectedness condition is sharp since Feng and Guo constructed a 2-connected 1-heavy graph which is almost distance-hereditary but not Hamiltonian.

Abstract:
As a major voice in children's literature in China, Feng Zikai uses his own life experience and the historical context of contemporary wars to negotiate the Chinese cultural myth of ‘The Peach Blossom Spring’ [Tao Hua Yuan]. ‘The Country of the Red Heart’ [Chi Xin Guo] is a fantastic utopia that exists parallel to our world, revealing his efforts to depict a pastoral dreamland and his subsequent disillusion in the face of the horrors of war and political strife. It is a story of fantasy as well as a political move on the part of Feng Zikai to address the historical milieu of China during the time of World War II, the Civil War, and the Korean War. Feng Zikai goes beyond the combination of Chinese-style cartoon [manhua] drawings and grotesquely fanciful plot as a war story for children. It is a modern political parable that demonstrates the vulnerability of his utopia in the first part of twentieth-century China.

This research investigated Chinese as second language (CSL) learner’s willingness to communicate (WTC) both inside and outside classroom in one of international schools, Hong Kong. The research objects are 170 Chinese Language B learners from an English School Foundation (ESF) international school. The main methodology adopted here was quantitative method. Classroom observations by researcher and self-reports by students were firstly done to collect background data, and then five scales were employed to do the main investigation, including a WTC Inside–the-classroom Scales (WTCIS), a WTC Outside-the-classroom Scale (WTCOS), a Language Anxiety Scale (LAS), a Motivation Scale (MS) and a Self-perceived Communicative Competence Scale (SCCS). The research objectives were to explore the general situation of CSL learners’ WTC, and the specific characteristics as well as possible differences of their WTC inside and outside the classroom; then to further examine the possible affecting variables from both background and psychological perspectives including gender, age, Chinese language proficiency, mother tongue, social support, personality and attitudes towards learning Chinese, which were regarded as background variables, and language anxiety, motivation and self-perceived communicative competence, which were regarded as psychological variables. After that, data was processed and analyzed by SPSS 19.0 for hypothesis verification. Finally, pedagogical implications on how to improve CSL learners’ WTC both inside and outside classroom were generalized from the study. The major findings showed that: (1) the general WTC of CSL learners from this school were slightly on the low side, between the Lower and Middle level, and the WTC inside the classroom was comparatively higher than outside of classroom. (2) On overall WTC, there was no significant difference between male and female students. But inside the classroom, girls were more likely to ask questions and pay more attention on language details than boys, while boy were more active to be the presenters and voice out in public. Outside the classroom, boys were more willing to communicate with strangers or chat online with friends in Chinese. (3) No significant WTC difference was found between Diploma Program (DP) and Middle Years Program (MYP), but DP CSL learners showed more willingness to make public speech, to be more of an inquirer in problems, and to do more generalization in speaking. (4) Among DP group, significant positive correlation was found between language proficiency and WTC, suggesting that the more proficient CSL learners showed higher WTC, and vice versa. (5) The more proficient group were more willing to speak Chinese voluntarily than the less proficient ones, implying that the more competent language learners are more likely to the take the initiative in communication. (6) CSL learners with more social supports to learn Chinese showed higher WTC, and a significant positive correlation was found here. (7) Students with Cantonese as mother tongue had higher WTC than their English as mothertougue counterparts, and this difference was more obviously outside of classroom. (8) Extroverted students showed significantly higher WTC inside of the classroom than the introverted. (9) Students who liked learning Chinese demonstrated higher WTC than those who didn’t. (10) Students’ motivation to learn Chinese and their SPCC were both on the high side, and both correlated positively on WTC, with motivation correlated more closely on outside WTC while SPCC more on inside WTC. Students showed slight lower anxiety level in speaking Chinese. Anxiety had significant negative correlation with WTC, and it mattered more inside than outside of classroom. No matter for WTC inside or outside, SPCC was the most predictive variable among the three.

The oil production in Brazil has been increasing each year. Consequently, increasing volumes of water produced are generated with large quantities of contaminants, which brings many problems in disposing of these waters. The concern that the concentrations of contaminants in water produced meet existing laws for disposal of effluents, has been extremely important for the development of different techniques for treatment of water produced. The study of clay minerals as adsorbents of organic contaminants has grown considerably so in order to combine the low cost with the efficiency of environmental preservation and health issues. Thus, this study aims to understand the characteristics of vermiculite clay, sodium bentonite, calcium bentonite and diatomite and evaluate their performance as adsorbents for phenol in the water produced. Through adsorption isotherms it was possible to observe the behavior of these adsorptive clay and diatomite for adsorption of phenol, the main phenolic compound found in water produced. Different concentrations of synthetic solutions of phenol were put in touch with these adsorbents under same conditions of agitation and temperature. The adsorbents were composted adsorptive favorable, but the vermiculite and diatomite showed little capacity for absorption, being suggested for absorbs small concentrations of phenol in the balance isothermal

Abstract:
This chapter opens by studying the two most seminal prose poets of the 1950s, Ke Lan and Guo Feng. It shows that by faithfully ventriloquizing state socialism, they effectively subjectivize it, putting the words of the collective into the mouth of the individual. It demonstrates the way in which the political pressures of the 1950s provoked acts of definition and organization on the part of prose poets. The second half of chapter three reads the prose poetry community itself as a key text of orthodox art. It finds that an intentional modeling of prose poetry communities on the structures of the Communist Party has produced a set of dynamics that are hierarchical, inter-organizational, and self-reproductive. These dynamics influence the composition of prose poems through the interventions of educators, editors, and study group administrators, leading to the conclusion that many people participate in the writing of each orthodox prose poem.

Following the Szymoniak protocol, Morwenna S. M. Pearson-Long and Philippe Bertus of the Université du Maine added (Synthesis 2015, 47, 992) the Grignard reagent 2 to the nitrile 1 to give the cyclopropyl amine 3. Chen-Guo Feng of the Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry prepared (Chem. Commun. 2015, 51, 8773) the cyclobutane 6 by enantioselective conjugate addition of 5 to the unsaturated ester 4. Martin Kotora of Charles University showed (Eur. J. Org. Chem. 2015, 2868) that the zirconacycle from the eneyne 7 reacted with the aldehyde 8 to give, after iodination, the alcohol 9. Xiaoming Feng of Sichuan University used (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2015, 54, 1608) a scandium catalyst to effect the intramolecular Roskamp cyclization of 10 to 11. Celia Dominguez of CHDI observed (Org. Lett. 2015, 17, 1401) that the double alkylation of the ester 12 with the dibromide 13 proceeded with high diastereoselectivity, to give 14. Hirokazu Tsukamoto of Tohoku University cyclized (Chem. Commun. 2015, 51, 8027) 15 to 16 in high ee. Daniel J. Weix of the University of Rochester found (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2015, 137, 3237) that under the influence of an enantiomerically-pure Ti catalyst, the organonickel species derived from 18 opened the prochiral epoxide 17 to give 19 in high ee. John F. Bower of the University of Bristol optimized (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2015, 137, 463) conditions for the highly diastereoselective Rh-mediated cyclocarbonylation of 20 to 21. Margaret A. Brimble of the University of Auckland initiated (J. Org. Chem. 2015, 80, 2231) the construction of the cyclohexenone 24 by the diastereoselective addition of 23 to the unsaturated ester 22. Olivier Baslé and Marc Maduit of ENSC Rennes devised (Chem. Eur. J. 2015, 21, 993) conditions for the preparation of 26 by enantioselective conjugate addition to the cyclohexenone 25. Yoshito Kishi of Harvard University demonstrated (Tetrahedron Lett. 2015, 56, 3220) that the carbenoid generated from the epoxide 27 cyclized to 28 with high diastereoselectivity. Wenjun Tang, also of the Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry, developed (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2015, 54, 3033) a Pd catalyst for the diastereoselective (because it is enantioselective) cyclization of 29 to 30.

Abstract:
This chapter begins by discussing how Feng County's leaders established a Cultural Revolution committee. The first party secretary, Gao Ying, was the head, and the vice-heads were Shao Wen and one other party standing committee member. The county leadership was able to maintain top-down control of the campaign for almost half a year. Not until the end of December 1966, several months after such events in China's large cities, did Red Guard and rebel groups begin to target Feng County's party leadership. The rebellion of students and others was very slow to develop, but the first stirrings were in the county seat, at Feng County Middle School. Feng County's rebel movement was so small, and so late in developing, that there were no factional divisions of the kind that emerged in China's large cities early in the autumn of 1966. The chapter then looks at the formation of the first broad alliance of local rebels, one that would play a key role in the county's factional conflicts over the next decade. The alliance became one of the county's two large factions, henceforth known by its abbreviated name, Paolian.

This case will present a project-based scenario where students will take the place of an astronaut stranded on Mars. Like the character in the Disney film The Martian, the astronaut only has a small collection of “spare parts” at his disposal to ensure survival. In this scenario, our astronauts meet predators and in an effort to fend them off, they must design and construct a catapult. During this deep dive process the astronauts working in groups of four, will take an inventory of spare parts available, design and draw a plan for building, build the catapult, test the catapult, and then go through a series of revisions, retesting and sharing their redesigns.

In this chapter, John Russell Kelso shares his experience at Big River and the Southwest Corner between August and September 1861. Kelso's regiment was sent to Big River, on the Iron Mountain Rail Road, to help fend off an attack by the rebels led by Meriweather Jeff Thompson. He was also ordered by Col. Sempronius H. Boyd to go out in disguise and pass along the entire southern border of Missouri to the Southwest corner, and see if it would be possible for his regiment alone to march through on that line. At Iron Mountain, Kelso and John Newton McConnell went to scout about the country and made one trip to the top of the Pilot Knob. When he arrived in Rolla, Kelso found his regiment already there, waiting orders to move on toward Springfield with John C. Frémont's army.

Abstract:
Obesity is a major and growing threat to good health to most parts of the world. In the United States, Xenical, marketed over the counter as Alli, is the only drug approved by the Food and Drug Administration for long-term use for weight control. There are several others—Qsymia, Contrave, Belviq, Saxenda—that are approved for short-term use. A number of others, approved earlier, have been withdrawn from the market for patient safety reasons, including the popular combination known as phen-fen. The pharmaceutical industry has found the discovery of effective and safe weight control drugs to be a formidable challenge. Xenical (tetrahydrolipstatin) is an inhibitor of an enzyme in the gut that promotes the digestion of fats. As a result, an increased fraction of ingested fat is excreted in the feces rather than being absorbed in the body, a reduction in effective calorie intake. This is a novel weight control mechanism of action. Other agents act to suppress appetite or as stimulants to calorie burning. Dietary measures to control weight take several forms, but the effective measure is calorie intake, not diet composition. The field of weight control is rife with false and unsubstantiated claims of efficacy. Research to find better drugs for weight control continues.

Abstract:
The world’s traditional societies have come to some kind of terms with their environments, or they would not have lasted long enough to become “traditional.” Most of them encode in their moral teachings practical wisdom about the environment and the individual’s duty to treat it with respect. These injunctions are lived; they enter daily practice, as when Noemy Chan makes her children eat the butterflies they thoughtlessly kill. They structure whole landscapes, as South China was structured by feng-shui. They stimulate deep personal involvement with actual plant and animal species, as on the Northwest Coast. The common theme of all these traditional resource management ethics is not spiritual harmony with some disembodied and abstracted Nature, but actual personal and emotional involvement with the actual landscape and its nonhuman inhabitants. People interact with their surroundings. In all cultures, these surroundings become meaningful—not just as sources of food and shelter, but as sources of beauty, power, excitement, and other human values. In those cultures that endure and do not collapse, the meanings of nature are bound up in systems of respect and protection. Often, mutual obligations exist between people and the beings or forces they believe to exist in the wild. From the lived experiences of people in cultures around the world, we can extract a number of general principles for environmental management. We can also, mercifully, learn that we need not go to the extreme lengths of ideological reform proposed by some modern environmentalists. Many societies have lived in balance with their environments without devoting their lives to ecology and without invoking elaborate laws. It is not only easier, but apparently more productive, to persuade people to live by a few simple principles of caring for, and enjoying, the world. No group has yet come up with a perfect plan for managing the environment. However, all societies have something to teach. The great benefit of anthropology is that it can bring together the combined wisdom of people from all times and places. Today, we need all the wisdom we can get, and only by pooling a wide range of human experiences can we survive.

Abstract:
Abstract In this set of experiments, the versatility of the University of Kent's light gas gun was utilised to obtain a selection of corroborative data regarding the formation and impact of metallic gunshot residues onto high purity silicon wafers. The results from the two experiments are presented. The first experiment investigated how the formation of metallic residues varied as gunshot residue analogues traversed through air under a range of pressures from 0.056 millibar (5.6 Pa) to 1 bar (100 kPa), using solely the energy released during primer ignition; the second involved firing a metallic powder mix of pre-determined composition (via a split-sabot) under vacuum at two velocities- 500 ms-1 and 2000 ms-1. This ensured that there was no ignition or heating of the powders, unlike the first experiment, and so the morphology of the particles collected would be solely due to impact. The residues on the substrates were then analysed using a cold Field Emission Gun Scanning Electron Microscope (FEG) and Energy Dispersive X-ray (EDX) detector. By separating the ignition process of the primers from the residue impacts, it allows for a closer look into the formation of these particles and helps determine whether their varied morphologies are due to the heating caused during the activation and combustion of the primer or whether its due to impact melting. This information can aid in the understanding of metallic particle formation in different pressure environments and give insight into the physical state of firearm residues when they impact a surface. Hydrocode modelling was also incorporated to corroborate the results observed during these experiments and gave results which mimicked the experimental data.

Abstract:
The influence of Ti element with the content from 0.018 wt.% to 0.112 wt.% on microstructure and mechanical properties of centrifugally cast 25Cr-35Ni-Nb alloy was investigated in this paper. The experiments were carried out by optical emission spectrometer, metallographic image analyzer, field emission gun scanning electron microscopy (FEG-SEM) equipped with an Oxford INCA energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer (EDS), tensile testing machine and creep testing machine. The results show that the microstructure and high temperature creep rupture properties of as-cast 25Cr-35Ni-Nb alloy are significantly affected by the addition of Ti. No precipitation of Ti carbides was observed in the alloy with the Ti content of 0.018 wt.%, whereas the skeleton (Nb, Ti) C were precipitated at grain boundaries when increasing the Ti content. Under the creep rupture condition of 1100 °C and 17 MPa, the rupture lives of 25Cr-35Ni-Nb alloy with Ti contents ranging from 0.04 wt.% to 0.112 wt.% were relatively higher. In addition, the role of Ti in ethylene pyrolysis furnace tube was also discussed in this paper.

Abstract:
Hybrid bearings (silicon nitride rolling elements and steel raceways) are being developed for the new generation of gas turbine engines, as they offer weight savings, reduced heat rejection and can operate at higher DN (bore diameter in mm × shaft rotational speed in rpm) values than conventional steel bearings. In the present study, various advanced synthetic aviation oils were tested on a pin-on-disc tribometer. Conditions were chosen to simulate engine low load and ambient start up, where sliding is a factor. The tests used a silicon nitride ball sliding against an M50NiL bearing steel disc. Fresh oils were tested for the hybrid contacts under high sliding speed of 7 ms−1 and normal aircraft engine bearing contact pressure of 2.8 GPa [1]. The results showed that most of the synthetic aviation oils in use today would provide similar protection for the hybrid contacts against scuffing. Initial studies, aimed at identifying the influence of oil degradation and effects of additive depletion are also presented. The oils were ranked based on the contact wear rate. Electrostatic charge measurements were made along with wear, friction and surface temperature measurements to monitor the on-line wear conditions [2–3]. Electrostatic sensing shows promise as a monitoring technique for oil lubricated hybrid contacts. Polishing wear mechanisms and iron-based material transfer from disc to ball were identified by Field Emission Gun Scanning Electron Microscopy (FEG-SEM) and Energy-Dispersive X-ray (EDX) as the dominant degradation process in these hybrid contacts.

Extending the concept of the morphological frame: a case study of Tangshan old military airport Rongxi Peng, Zijiao Zhang, Yixi Li, Feng Song* College of Urban and Environmental Sciences, Peking University. 100871 Beijing E-mail: pengrongxi@pku.edu.cn, 411148973@qq.com, elaine9565@yeah.net, songfeng@urban.pku.edu.cn*(corresponding author)Telephone Number: +86 132-6990-0350, +86 139-1013-6101* Keywords: China, morphological frame, three-dimensional view, airport Conference topics and scale: Urban form and social use of space/ City transformations/ Stages in territorial configuration The concept of the morphological frame is important in urban morphology, but it has been discussed much less than other critical concepts, such as the fringe belt and the fixation line. Passing its features on as inherited outlines, the morphological frame contains not only the linear fixation line, but also ground plan and three-dimensional aspects. In this research, the linear, ground plan, and three-dimensional morphological frame of Tangshan old military airport during the expansion of the city after the removal of the airport is identified. The former boundary roads of the airport exert obvious influences on the division of plots. The former arterial roads also function as a linear morphological frame. In relation to the ground plan, property rights and plots containing important buildings have an impact on the consequent town plan. The distinct feature of the morphological frame of the airport is its three-dimensional constraint, i.e. the vertical clearance requirement, which restricted the height of surrounding buildings. The impact of this institutional limit can last a very long time owing to the high cost of demolishing the old surrounding buildings or adding extra storeys even if the limit ceased to exist with the removal of the airport. Based on this case study, this paper refines and extends the connotation of the concept of the morphological frame and further discusses the relationship between function and form. Abstract:
Hot deformation characteristics of forged and β-quenched Zr-1.0Sn-0.3Nb-0.3Fe-0.1Cr (N18 alloy) in the temperature range 625–950°C and in the strain rate range 0.005–5 s−1 have been studied by uniaxial compression testing of Gleeble 3500. For this study, the approach of processing maps has been adopted and their interpretation done using the Dynamic Materials Model (DMM). Based on a series of true stress-true strain curves on various temperatures and strain rates, the flow stress has been summarized and both the strain rate sensitivity index (m) and deformation activation energy (Q) have been calculated by the constitutive equations that flow stress and the relationship of Z parameter and flow stress have been established subsequently. Furthermore, the efficiency of power dissipation (⬜) given by [2m/(m+1)] and improved by Murty has been plotted as a function of temperature and strain rate to obtain different processing maps at different true strain rates ranging from 0.1–0.7. Subsequently, the microstructures of the specimens after compression testing were characterized by electron channeling contrast (ECC) imaging techniques used an FEI Nova 400 field emission gun scanning electron microscopy (FEG-SEM). The results showed that: (i) The hyperbolic sine constitutive equation can describe the flow stress behavior of zirconium alloy, and the deformation activation energy and flow stress equation were calculated under the different temperature stages which insists that the deformation mechanism is not dynamic recovery. (ii) The hot processing maps and its validation were analyzed, which indicated that the DMM theory was reliable and could be adopted as useful tool for optimizing hot workability of Zr. The optimum parameters for extrusion and hammer forging were revealed on the processing maps of 830–950°C, 0.048–2.141 s−1 and 916–950°C, 2.465–5 s−1. (iii) The microstructure of the ingot exhibits a typical lamellar Widmanstatten structure. Under the different strain rates, the grains formed by dynamic recrystallization existed normally in the central zone of the compression samples while the no uniformity of grain size increased with the increasing of strain rate. Meanwhile, due to the dynamic recrystallization as a thermal activation process, the grains size and uniformity increased with the increasing of temperature. In brief, microstructure analysis showed that continuous dynamic recrystallization and geometric dynamic recrystallization operated concurrently during the isothermal compressive deformation.

Hawco, Jessica, Elliott Burden, Edison Sripal, and Lesley James. "Evaluating the Prospect of Oil Production in Tight Winterhouse Formation Rocks in Western Newfoundland." In SPE Canadian Energy Technology Conference. SPE, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.2118/208908-ms.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract The Winterhouse Formation (Port au Port Peninsula, western Newfoundland, Canada) is a lateral equivalent to the Utica and Macasty formations farther west. With hydrocarbon stains and odours as a guide towards a common and regional upper Ordovician hydrocarbon system, Winterhouse rocks may yet contain their own suite of source reservoir and seal strata, with coarser, sandier beds perhaps playing host to other varieties of conventional and unconventional hydrocarbon traps. Hence, addressing basic properties of fluid transmission is an important and unknown variable that needs to be addressed for this formation. In this pilot study, Mercury Intrusion Porosimetry (MIP) is applied to measure the petrophysical properties of a single tight (low porosity, low permeability) quartz-carbonate sandstone sample from a Winterhouse outcrop. As a tool, Mercury Intrusion Porosimetry is strongly dependent on conformity of sample size and shape as a determinant of pore accessibility. Hence two sample types (i) plugs and (ii) cuttings (both real and artificial) are analyzed to explore aspects of core and cuttings preparation and data reduction work flow measurements of storage and transport properties. For artificial "cuttings" a horizontal 2.5 cm core plug and rock fragments are crushed and sieved to replicate fine and coarse fractions. For porosimetry, a Micromeretrics AutoPore IV porosimeter with a maximum pressure of 33,000 psi is used to determine the porosity, pore size distribution, surface area, and bulk density of all samples. Additionally, the FEI Quanta 650 Field Emission Gun (FEG) SEM is used to take images of the pore structure. Mineralogy is determined from the GXMAP measurement mode within FEI Mineral Liberation AnalyzerTM software. A comprehensive analysis corroborating results from MIP and SEM indicates that for these tight rocks, and namely, outcrop plugs, artificial cuttings, and real drill cuttings from a nearby well, all show a similar spectrum of results, but smaller coarse fragments are recommended for reliability. In terms of the Winterhouse strata, it is clear that some of this rock is very tight and highly cemented, but that it also possesses fractures and high permeability values which may make it a good unconventional reservoir. These porosity-permeability results are simply a beginning in a search to understand the petrophysical properties of the strata on the western coast of Newfoundland. The western part of Newfoundland has seen extensive oil exploration efforts in the last few decades, these efforts have resulted in little success. A large degree of this is due to the complex geological history and overall lack of knowledge concerning the structure and diagenesis of these rocks (Cooper et al, 2001). This study will support the new sampling programs in the hope of gaining new insights into potential oil exploitation.
