Abstract:
The Reformed Kirk of Scotland has a reputation for vigorous repression of festivity hardly to be surpassed by any other Protestant church. From 1560 on, the authorities of the kirk from local session to General Assembly waged a stern and unremitting campaign against the celebration of Yule, Easter, May Day, Midsummer, and saints' days; against feasting, whether at marriages or wakes; against Sunday sports and dancing and guising—in short, against anything that might distract newly Reformed laity from the central Protestant focus on the sermon, the Bible, and the godly life of moral discipline and prayer. Their goals were both negative and positive. They were intent on quashing popish superstition in part because they were convinced that its persistence helped to explain the recurrence of plague, famine, and other divine judgments on the land. In a more positive sense, they were trying to clear the way for construction of a new vision of the good life—one that exalted word over image and discipline over ritual, and in which community cohesion was achieved by a shared Protestant identity and the common goal of a devout and orderly society. Modern observers generally credit their campaign with remarkable success; certainly the popular image of Scotland after the Reformation is grim and joyless—and with some reason. Days of fasting and humiliation under presbyterian rule came close to outnumbering the old saints' days, and they vastly outnumbered new days of thanksgiving. Official policy on the matter of festivity was exemplary for a Reformed nation.

Abstract:
Mulberry (Morus L.) has become an important crop throughout the world due to its fruits have been industrially exploited for various commercially valuable products. Many studies on mulberry related to genetic diversity, fruit quality, and breeding programs have been carried out, but little information on mulberry rootstocks is available, especially the possibility of applying grafting to improve the fruit quality. Here, we evaluated the effects of 8 different rootstocks on the fruit quality of ‘Zijing’ mulberry. Twelve fruit quality traits were extremely different except for the fruit shape index (FSI). ‘Zijing’ on ‘Zheza 2’ had the highest fruit weight (FW) and size, as well as titratable acidity (TA), but lower levels of other compounds content except the total soluble solids content (TSS) were detected. ‘Yuesang 51’ exhibited the highest soluble sugar content (SSC), reducing sugar content (RSC), SSC/TA ratio, anthocyanin content (AC) and the lower TA. In contrast, the lowest TSS, SSC and RSC were shown in ‘Guisang 5’. Moreover, ‘Guisang 12’ exhibited the highest TSS and soluble protein content (SPC). The highest vitamin C content (VC) was observed in ‘Guisang 6’. ‘Tang 10 × Lun109’, Zhenzhubai seedlings, ‘Yuesang 11’ together with ‘Yuesang 51’ had the lowest and similar levels of TA. Most importantly, these fruit quality traits were evaluated by principal component analysis (PCA), and ‘Yuesang 51’ with good comprehensive fruit quality was screened out, followed by ‘Guisangyou 12’. Overall, these results contribute to evaluating the roles of different rootstocks on improving fruit quality of mulberry.

Abstract:
This article is devoted to the systematization and critical analysis of the experience of various countries of the world in organizing the population evacuation from areas of various techno-logical disasters: accidents at radiation-hazardous objects and chemical facilities, as well as dam failures. The article provides an assessment of the role of public notification about the danger, speed and awareness of decision-making by the responsible authorities, prepared-ness of the infrastructure for transportation and resettlement of a large number of people in successful evacuation and minimization of human losses and the number of injured. A distin-guishing feature of technological disasters is the suddenness of the deployment due to the predominant impact of the human factor. In this connection, recommendations are given re-garding the need for preventive preparation of the population and infrastructure for potential disasters in threatened areas.

Abstract:
The synthesis of graphene directly on Ge and on Ge deposited on Si provides a scalable route toward integrating graphene onto conventional semiconductors. This presentation will first survey the growth modes of graphene on Ge(001), Ge(011), Ge(111), Ge(112), Ge(001)-6°, and Ge(001)-9° via chemical vapor deposition (CVD), reporting on the effect of Ge surface orientation on graphene island formation and shape, strain in large-area graphene films, and the nanofaceting of the Ge below graphene.[1] We will then focus on the anisotropic growth of semiconducting graphene nanoribbons on Ge(001) and Ge(001)-9° and of nominally single crystal graphene on Ge(110). On Ge(001), we have discovered how to drive graphene crystal growth with a large shape anisotropy through control of kinetics.[2-6] This discovery enables the direct synthesis of narrow, armchair, semiconducting nanoribbons. The ribbons are self-orienting, self-defining, and have smooth edges. The ribbons exhibit excellent transport properties (e.g., high on-state conductance and on/off ratio at room temperature) and provide a promising pathway towards the direct integration of high-performance nanocarbon electronics onto conventional semiconductor wafer platforms. On Ge(001), nominally single crystal graphene has been reported in limited cases; however, conflicting studies have evidenced polycrystallinity. Here, the factors affecting the mosaicity of graphene on Ge(110) will be elucidated using low energy electron diffraction and microscopy data.[7] [1] R. M. Jacobberger, D. E. Savage, X. Zheng, P. Abstract:
E. R. M. O. S
On the 9th of july 1981, after a violent storm, the torrent of the verdarel caused extensive damage to infrastructures and buildings in the commune of st-chaffrey (part of the serre-chevalier ski resort, in the hautes-alpes department). If the control of the mountain torrents is certainly not a new problem, this unprecedented torrential flood had the unhappy privilege of reminding the elected members of the necessity of implementing preventive measures concerning natural hazards. Such an undertaking absolutely requires a scientific support intented to specify the interactions between the functioning of the natural environment and the human society. Firstly, this implies a detailed mapping which enabled me to draw up an exhaustive inventory of the phenomena which are liable to generate a threat. Among them, the mass movements hold an important place. They are very different (landslides, mud flows, rock falls, etc). And they sometimes hit entire slopes. The following research of the factors of instability is chiefly turned to bioclimate conditions and the geomorphological environment (morphostructural context, glacial print, periglacial area). A historical survey has also been undertaken so as to define the dangers induced by the torrential activity. The step also involves the setting of several lines of stakes in order to specify the degree of activity of a mud flow. It finally leads to the achievement of a natural hazards map inspired by the z.

Since the 1950’s, the creation of Serre-Chevalier has led municipalities to the Guisane valley into a deep socio-economic regeneration. Once safely neglected, many areas have then been massive urbanization. The alluvial fans are privileged to be part of this rivalry space, and therefore the risk area. Relations "torrents-society" are quite conflicting, and the integration of risk in torrential development projects or development is still often perceived as a burden. This work is characterized by a transversal approach and multiscale coupling of field investigations and analysis carried out ex situ. The diagnosis of torrential hazard depends mainly on the concept of "potential" to detach from the "straitjacket" normal zoning history. The study of contemporary morphological adjustments helped to better understand the diversity of local configurations, but also the inexorable rise of vulnerability to the development of Serre-Chevalier. The development perspective of past and current management of risk has put forward some proposals, including from a significant focus on prevention information, education, and especially the issues. Furthermore, a system of information on risk torrential in Serre-Chevalier (SIRTOS) was designed. This would facilitate decision making by its interoperability, its enrichment, its integration into development projects, and thus lead to more sustainable management of the torrential risk

Abstract At the end of the Renaissance, with the decline of the Aristotelian cardio-centrism, the brain became, in accordance with the Hippocratic/Galenic tradition, the organ recognized as the seat of psychic functions. In 1664, the English physician Thomas Willis, to whom we owe the introduction of the term neurology, described, in his Cerebri Anatome, a number of brain structures including the corpus striatum, the mammillary bodies, and the thalamus, distin- guishing between gray matter and white matter. Nevertheless, knowledge of the brain’s microscopic anatomy developed slowly and with difficulty.

Abstract:
Abstract The practice of adopting international joint venture (IJV) longevity and stability as performance indicators is very well established. Since the literature’s inception, this approach has been followed in conceptual work, descriptive studies, and fieldwork, and continues to be employed by scholars studying cross-border collaboration (e.g. Beamish, 1985; Brown, Rugman, and Verbeke, 1989; Dymsza, 1988; Franko, 1971; Killing, 1983; Li and Guisinger, 1991). In part, this tradition reflects the literature’s focus on IJV formation issues, theoretical diversity, and continued fragmentation. These factors have impeded the development of an overarching typology to classify heterogeneous alliances, to investigate their evolution and effectiveness, and to link specialized streams of research (Doz, 1996; Oliver, 1990; Osborn and Hagedoorn, 1997; Parkhe, 1993a; Smith, Carroll, and Ashford, 1995).

Abstract Ecological niche modeling seeks to address a fundamental question in ecology: What is the potential geographic distribution of an organism? The answer is central to a wide range of environmental questions (Guisan and Thuiller 2005). It can identify potential conservation zones or guide selection of areas for the reintroduction of threatened and endangered species (Araujo et al. 2004) based on their potential range. Similarly, the modeling of suitable habitat can reveal at which unsurveyed sites rare species are most likely to occur (Elith and Burgman 2002; Raxworthy et al. 2003). Based on scenarios of future climate change, land use, and habitat availability, ecological niche modeling can predict potential future shifts in species distributions (Thuiller et al. 2004).

Abstract:
Abstract Contrasts between relative simplicity and relative complexity, between the exploitation of repetition and attempts to avoid it, have been part of twentieth-century music from the beginning. But it was only around 1960, in the United States, that an approach of such consistency, and techniques of such evident reductiveness, emerged that commentators sensed the need for a new label. Alongside the experimentalism of Cage and his followers, minimalist music seemed to offer an alternative to the twentieth century’s persistent concern with preserving or extending earlier stylistic and generic traditions, and with devising complex, avant-garde alternatives to those traditions. Even if, from a late-century perspective, all it appears to have offered is ‘the mystical rationalism of serialism in a new guisen that newness has proved sufficiently substantial and long-lasting to establish an immense gulf between it and the sounds and stylistic qualities of ‘old’ serialism. Minimalism cannot simply be equated with anti-modernism, however, and the paradoxes and ambiguities soon accumulate when the two phenomena are considered together. Such consideration suggests that the principal factor in this alternative music is not so much its ‘minimal’ content as its experimental attitude, confronting the need to win a place for its products within the existing institutional framework of concerts and recordings, and therefore to challenge mainstream modernism on its own ground.
