Jeffs, Kathleen. The Impact of the RSC’s Spanish Golden Age Season. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198819349.003.0007.

Abstract:
The RSC’s groundbreaking 2004–5 season had a tremendous impact on the development of the comedia within the English-speaking theatrical landscape in the years that followed the performances. All through the process, the model of collaboration between the directors, translators, and academic consultants grew and continued to bear fruit. This chapter, written over ten years after the close of the RSC Spanish Golden Age season, examines that season’s influence on the subsequent productions it inspired. The model of collaboration between the team members took on various guises throughout the new productions that have come and gone since the close of the RSC season, and looking back through the lens of experience of that season gives a unique perspective on the work as it has evolved.

Zeitlin, Vladimir. Resonant Wave Interactions and Resonant Excitation of Wave-guide Modes. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198804338.003.0012.

Full text
Abstract:
The idea of resonant nonlinear interactions of waves, and of resonant wave triads, is first explained using the example of Rossby waves, and then used to highlight a mechanism of excitation of wave-guide modes, by impinging free waves at the oceanic shelf, and at the equator. Physics and mathematics of the mechanism, which is related to the phenomena of parametric resonance and wave modulation, are explained in detail in both cases. The resulting modulation equations, of Ginzburg–Landau or nonlinear Schrodinger type, are obtained by multi-scale asymptotic expansions and elimination of resonances, after the explanation of this technique. The chapter thus makes a link between geophysical fluid dynamics and other branches of nonlinear physics. A variety of nonlinear phenomena including coherent structure formation is displayed. The resonant excitation of wave-guide modes provides an efficient mechanism of energy transfer to the wave guides from the large to the small.

Abstract:
This manual guides librarians in creating simple, affordable, ready-to-use activities for children, 'tweens, teens, and families, with enough material for a full year of programs. Do-it-yourself programming is an emerging model in which the librarian does the preparation, then lets patrons take over.DIY Programming and Book Displays: How to Stretch Your Programming without Stretching Your Budget and Staffmakes it easy for librarians to institute such programs in their own facilities. Organized around 12 thematic chapters, the book explains how to set up and maintain a do-it-yourself station and offers instructions for a variety of year activities. Reproducible materials and booklists are included as well. Librarians may use the activities as starting points for generating their own ideas or they may simply photocopy materials in the book for ready-to-use, monthly DIY programming. Once set up, the DYI station is available to patrons anytime they are in the library. Best of all, because DIY programs do not rely on staff, space, or special materials, they allow libraries to make the most of their resources without sacrificing patron service.

Koops, Lisa Huisman. Parenting Musically. Oxford University Press, 2019. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190873622.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Parents use music in family life to accomplish practical tasks, make relational connections, and guide their children’s musical development. Parenting Musically portrays the musicking of eight diverse Cleveland-area families in home, school, and community settings. Family musical interactions are analyzed using the concepts of musical parenting (actions to support a child’s musical development) and parenting musically (using music to accomplish extramusical parenting goals), arguing the importance of recognizing and valuing both modes. An additional construct, practical~relational musicking, lends nuance to the analysis of family musical engagement. Practical musicking refers to musicking for a practical purpose, such as learning a scale or passing the time in a car; relational musicking is musicking that deepens relationships with self, siblings, parents, or community members, such as a grandmother singing to her grandchildren via FaceTime as a way to feel connected. Families who embraced both practical and relational musicking expressed satisfaction in long-term musical involvement. Weaving together themes of conscious and intuitive parenting, the rewards and struggles of musical practice, the role of mutuality in community musicking, and parents’ responses to media messages surrounding music and parenting, the discussion incorporates research in music education, psychology, family studies, and sociology. This book serves to highlight the multifaceted nature of families’ engagement in music; the author urges music education practitioners and administrators to consider this diversity of engagement when approaching curricular decisions.

White, Bretton. Staging Discomfort. University Press of Florida, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.5744/florida/9781683401544.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Staging Discomfort examines how queer bodies are theatrically represented on the Cuban stage in order to re-evaluate the role of categorization as one of the state’s primary revolutionary tools. These performances concentrate on an aesthetics of fluidity, and thus upset traditional understandings of performer and spectator, and what constitutes the ideal Cuban citizenry. New affective modes are produced when performing bodies highlight—often in uncomfortably intimate, grotesque, or raw ways—the unavoidability of spectators’ bodies, and their capacity for queerness. Here the imagining of new continuities and subjectivities can lead to a reconfiguration of forms of Cuban citizenship. The affective responses from the closeness experienced in the performances in Staging Discomfort are challenges to the Cuban state’s self-designated role as primary provider for the needs of its citizens’ bodies. Through the lens of queer theory, the manuscript explores the body’s centrality to the state’s deployment of fear to successfully marginalize gay life, which this group of works seeks to defuse through an articulation of intimacies, shame, the death drive, cruising, and failure. These affective experiences shape Cuban subjectivities that emerge out of queerness, but whose focus on inclusivity necessarily involves all Cubans. Several of the central questions that guide Staging Discomfort are: How is Cuban theater agile in its critiques considering the state’s limitations on expression? How do queer performances allow for new understandings about the effects of the state’s failing socialist utopian contract with its citizens? And, can Cuban bodies that come together in queer ways re-imagine Cuban citizenship?

Sabato, Stefano. Neuroblastoma Resection. Edited by Erin S. Williams, Olutoyin A. Olutoye, Catherine P. Seipel, and Titilopemi A. O. Aina. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780190678333.003.0038.

Full text
Abstract:
Neuroblastoma is the most common extracranial solid tumor of childhood. Staging of neuroblastoma has both prognostic value and guides therapy and interventions. Surgical resection and chemotherapy remain the main modes of therapy, and chemotherapeutic agents have both immediate and long-term implications for the anesthetic management of these patients. Though less common, some patients may have catecholamine-induced hemodynamic instability. Thorough perioperative planning and adequate vascular access are required for these procedures. This chapter will prepare the reader to know how to assess and optimize a child with neuroblastoma for surgery, appreciate some of the difficulties of anesthesia for the child with cancer, and understand the principles of management of major blood loss during pediatric surgery.

Boddice, Rob. Sympathy, Liberty, and Compulsion: Vaccination. University of Illinois Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.5406/illinois/9780252040580.003.0005.

Full text
Abstract:
Major figures within evolutionary science contributed to the debate about vaccination, exposing some key practical differences in the moral imperatives to be derived from slightly different models of emotional evolution. The chapter shows how the science of sympathy impinged on individual liberties for the sake of a greater good at the level of society itself. It also shows how the science of sympathy could be liberty’s greatest advocate in its determination to let ‘nature’ take its course. Intellectual investigations of evolutionary scientists were internalised and employed as modes of being, or as guides to moral action. The opposite reactions of Huxley and Wallace over vaccination, are taken to be expressions of moral feeling, based on alternative understandings and internalisations of the evolution of civilised emotions.

Gray, Kevin, and Susan Francis Gray. 5. Easements and profits à prendre. Oxford University Press, 2013. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/he/9780199603794.003.0005.

Abstract:
Titles in the Core Text series take the reader straight to the heart of the subject, providing focused, concise, and reliable guides for students at all levels. This chapter focuses on two of the most important categories of entitlement that may be acquired over other people's land: easements and profits à prendre. Each of these rights comprises a species of proprietary entitlement, with the usual consequence in English law that the rights in question have the capacity to bind third parties. But, for precisely this reason, the law draws fairly stringent definitional boundaries around the kinds of incorporeal right that enjoy this potential of third-party impact. The discussions cover: the defining characteristics of easements and profits; the modes of creation and termination of easements and profits; and the transmission of the benefit and burden of easements and profits.

Abstract:
In the past four decades the field of Asian American literary and cultural studies has grown enormously, expanding its areas of inquiry beyond the reflections on national identity and citizenship to encompass such issues as transnational and diasporic identities and communities; the workings of imperialism; the intersectionality of race, gender, and sexuality; and social justice/human rights in a global context. This project is the largest and most comprehensive collection of scholarship on Asian American literature and culture to date. From Asian American literary classics to experimental theater, from K-pop to online gaming, the Oxford Encyclopedia of Asian American Literature and Culture guides both established scholars and readers new to this study through the extensive landscape of Asian American writing and cultural production. More than one hundred essays on varied historical periods, geographical locales, and artistic modes offer an extensive examination of racial representation and activism, interdisciplinary and comparative approaches to literary work, ethnic communities, space and place, transnational and transpacific flows, and genres such as speculative fiction, the detective novel, and melodrama. Along with literary works from the late-19th century to the 21st century, the Oxford Encyclopedia of Asian American Literature and Culture covers a wide-ranging selection of Asian American theatre, dance, music, visual arts, film, television, and media. With its illuminating and profound commentary on Asian American writing and artistic practice, the volumes survey the historical foundations of this rich field, showing the exciting and profound new directions that currently drive the study of Asian American literary and cultural traditions.
