Jamaloodien, Khadija. "Application of the AGREE II instrument in the evaluation of a selection of South African Clinical Guidelines." Diss., University of Pretoria, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/46133.

Full text
Abstract:
Guideline development processes influence the quality of clinical guidelines. The aim of this study was to use the AGREE II instrument to evaluate the variability of the quality of selected guidelines, to determine a baseline for the quality of current guidelines and determine whether guidelines demonstrated good standard practice during their development. The AGREE II instrument was used to assess a selection of guidelines published between January 2012 and June 2013. Eleven guidelines were selected for review. Overall, guidelines scored highest in domain 1 (Scope and purpose) and 4 (Clarity of presentation); and lowest in domain 3 (Rigour of development) and 6 (Editorial independence) with the overall assessment score of three out of seven. The study demonstrated that the quality of guidelines was variable and that there are deficiencies in the guideline development process. The results from this study provide a baseline to measure the quality of future guidelines.

Abstract:
This project aims to result in guidelines for future development of auditory signals in cars. The characteristics ofdifferent types of signals are investigated for a greater understanding of what parameters in auditory signals thatgive rise to certain feelings or behaviour. Auditory signals from Saab 9-5 are modified to fit existing theories aboutauditory alerts. These are then compared to their original signals and signals from Saab 9-3, BMW 3-series and AudiA6 in a user study. The results show that there is a possibility to design signals with no significant difference inurgency that are seen as less annoying at lower sound levels. Urgency seems to depend negatively on sound cadenceand signal length and positively on number of repetitions and frequencies and also loudness. SAM scale resultsshowed that both original and modified signals tend to move according to desired theories (higher activation andlower valence for high urgency signals and vice versa). The study also showed that further work needs to be put onstrengthening Saabs brand identity concerning auditory signals and that detailed studies on driver perception andbehaviour is needed when developing new signals.

Calcium is an essential mineral found in great abundance in the body. Ninety-nine percent of all the calcium in the body is found in the bones and teeth. The remaining one percent is in the blood. Calcium plays important roles in nerve conduction, muscle contraction, and blood clotting. If calcium levels in the blood drop below normal, calcium will be taken from bone and put into the blood in order to maintain blood calcium levels. Therefore, it is important to consume enough calcium to maintain adequate blood and bone calcium levels. Revised 2017, Revised 2011, Original 2004

Abstract:
Smartphones and applications are becoming more and more popular. Although, the user knowledge varies. Onboarding has been described in other previous studies as a tool for costumers to get a better understanding of applications. This thesis aims to develop guidelines for onboarding by investigating previous studies and by comparing different applications. By investigating to what extent onboarding is beneficial for an application, the question of if it is worth the time and effort for a company to develop an onboarding is discussed. A hi- fi onboarding prototype will be developed to be able to test the guidelines. Simplicity, knowledge of the user, smooth navigation and user satisfaction are a few things that were kept in mind from previous studies when developing the guidelines. To be able to develop guidelines, questions regarding mobile devices, application developing, user behaviour and manuals have also been studied. Interviews combined with observations allowed for an analysis of the guidelines by conducting an A/B test. One group of test subjects received an application with onboarding, and the other group received the same application without onboarding. The result of the A/B test showed that onboarding helped the user to find functions that could be considered difficult to locate. The test also showed that many people often skip onboarding, but people that complete the onboarding process gets a better understanding of the application faster. Guidelines for an efficient development of an onboarding are presented. In conclusion, onboarding is a tool that should be utilized if the developer aims to allow as many users as possible to understand the full potential of the application as fast as possible.

Arguello, Lacayo Gustavo Adolfo. "Diabetes Guidelines Implementation Toolkit." Digital Archive @ GSU, 2011. http://digitalarchive.gsu.edu/iph_theses/176.

Full text
Abstract:
Diabetes Guidelines Implementation Toolkit is a capstone project aimed to help the Grady North Fulton Health Center to implement the American Diabetes Association (ADA) “Standards in Medical Care in Diabetes, 2011” guidelines. This toolkit can also be used to implement the diabetes guidelines in any other primary or community healthcare facility to improve diabetes care. Diabetes can affect many parts of the body and can lead to serious complications such as blindness, kidney damage, and lower-limb amputations. Working together, people with diabetes, their support network, and their health care providers can reduce the occurrence of these and other diabetes complications by controlling the levels of blood glucose, blood pressure, blood lipids, and by receiving other preventive care practices in a timely manner. Once the decision to put into practice the evidence-based diabetes guidelines has been made, this implementation toolkit will serve as a guide to help go through the process of implementation. The toolkit will suggest practical ways to implement the use of the guidelines using a stepwise approach, resources and template materials such as information handouts, flow sheets, referral forms, sample patient letters, etc. will be provided in the toolkit to facilitate the implementation. The final goal of the implementations is to improve the delivery of effective preventive health care services and promote diabetes preventive behaviors in order to prevent diabetes, its complications and disabilities, and the burden associated with the disease.

Abstract:
In January 2015 statutory regulation of the development agreement was introduced. The regelation is found in the Planning and Building Act Chapter 6. The purpose of the regulation is mainly to increase the predictability and to make clear rules in the contract negotiations. The regulation also meant that the municipalities that intend to enter development agreements have to establish guidelines. The overall aim of the guidelines is to create transparency and clarity in the negotiations between the parties. The purpose of this study is to examine the municipalities in Stockholm County that has established guidelines for the development agreements. These guidelines have been compared with the new law on guidelines for the development agreements, and its fundamental purpose. The conclusion is that the guidelines only creates a certain increased transparency and clarity, where as few municipalities have chosen to specify the content of the guidelines.

Abstract:
Software as a Service (SaaS) is a subset of cloud services where a vendor provides software as a service to customers. The SaaS application is installed on the SaaS provider’s servers, and is often accessed via the web browser. In the context of SaaS, a customer is called tenant, which often is an organization that is accessing the SaaS application, but it could also be a single individual. A SaaS application can be classified into tenancy models. A tenancy model describes how a tenant’s data is mapped to the storage on the server-side of the SaaS application.By doing a research, the authors have drawn the conclusion that there is a lack of guidance for selecting tenancy models. The purpose of this thesis is to provide guidance for selecting tenancy models. The short-term-goal is to create a tenancy selection guide. The long-term-goal is to provide researchers and students with research material. This thesis provides a guidance model for selection of tenancy models. The model is called Tenancy Model Selection Guidelines (TMSG).TMSG was evaluated by interviewing two professionals from the software industry. The criteria used for evaluating TMSG were Interviewee credibility, Syntactic correctness, Semantic correctness, Usefulness and Model flexibility. In the interviews, both of the interviewees said that TMSG was in need of further refinements. Still they were positive to the achieved result.

Doctoral thesis, Norges teknisk-naturvitenskapelige universitet, Institutt for språk og litteratur, 2014. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:no:ntnu:diva-24516.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation examines word-prosody of ciTonga, a Malawian Bantu language spoken by lakeshore people of northern Malawi. It is argued that the real word-prosody in this language (and perhaps many Bantu languages) revolves around the idea of Strong Accent Constituency, power relations between segments, syllables and between lower and higher prosodic categories as determined by Universal Guidelines such as SONORITY, FINALITY, EDGENESS and PROSODIC HIERARCHY as well as constraints which favour language- or context-specific Strong Accent Constituents (PROSODIC STEM, ACCENT FOOT, STEM-SYLLABLE1, PENULTIMATE SYLLABLE or FINAL SYLLABLE). Tone and prosodic morphemes such as Minimal Prosodic Words and Reduplicative Prosodic Morphemes also seem to be heavily regulated by Strong Accent Constituency. The empirical bases are three speech styles found in ciTonga (Nkhata-Bay Variety) namely, formal, common, and elderly speech styles. It is one of several understudied and endangered languages in Malawi. This study therefore is in line with one of the goals of the University of Malawi's Centre for Language Studies, where this candidate serves as a member, which is to prioritize research activities on such languages. The candidate is a native speaker of ciTonga and , as such, he is primary source of most of the data. Other methods such as elicitation and focus group discussions were conducted with informants not only to get to the bottom of the matter, but to also understand social issues underlying language variation. The dissertation has been presented in 6 chapters. Chapter 1 presents introductory remarks. These include the problem statement, a note on methodology, summary of findings, theoretical precedents, and, finally, organization of the dissertation. Chapter 2 presents basic facts about the language under study. These include language classification, previous works on ciTonga, speech sounds, the syllable, tone, as well as nominal and verbal morphology. Chapter 3 presents a proposal for the theory of Strong Accent Constituency. It presents the data on vowel and consonant deletion which motivates this theory analysis. Then attempts are made to account for the facts in terms of stress-accent theory and Downing's (2006b) Morpheme-Based Templates Theory both of which are found to be slightly problematic to account for segment deletion and preservation patterns exhibited in ciTonga. Finally, the chapter introduces the theory and accounts for the facts in terms of Strong Accent Constituent Theory. Chapter 4 presents formally the theory of Interaction between Tone and Strong Accent Constituents. The chapter presents the data on tone assignment in basic verbs, simple past tense verbs and present progressive aspect verbs which motivate this type of theory analysis. Attempts are then made to account for the facts in terms of tone alignment theory (as argued by Mtenje 2006), autosegmental accent (Clements and Goldsmith 1984) and 'pitch-accent' or accentual properties of tone in Bantu languages (as hinted upon by Downing 2004). All these theoretical perspectives are found to be slightly inadequate to account for tone distribution patterns in ciTonga. On the other hand, a theory based on Interaction between Tone and Strong Accent Constituents is shown to account for the facts slightly better. Chapter 5 presents formally proposals for Strong Accent Constituent-Based Templates as a theory of morphology-prosody interfaces in ciTonga and perhaps many other Bantu languages with a Strong Accent Constituent system. It presents the data on general phonological words, Minimal Prosodic Words and Reduplicative Prosodic Morphemes. It then reviews two competing theories in the literature within the Generalized Templates Theory namely, the Prosodic Hierarchy-Based Templates Theory and the Morpheme-Based Templates Theory both of which have a goal to account for morphology-prosody interfaces. Both these theories are shown to be slightly inadequate to account for parameters exhibited by phonological words in ciTonga. On the other hand, it is suggested that a theory of Strong Accent Constituent-Based Templates may account for the facts slightly better. Chapter 6 summarizes and concludes the dissertation.

Abstract:
The American public has shown growing concern for the protection of aesthetic values on private and public lands. For private lands, the protection of aesthetic qualities must be coupled with use rights inherent in property ownership under American law. One of the earliest models to protect such values on private lands was the use of "police power" to regulate the appearance of new development in selected districts. This has most frequently been accomplished by including design guidelines in zoning ordinances. This study examines history, relevant law and literature, and the content of design guidelines in zoning ordinances. The content analysis was designed to investigate both design elements and trends over time existed. The findings from the content analysis suggest that the use of design guidelines are increasing for contemporary areas and communities as well as historic districts. Also, that the design guidelines are becoming increasingly specific in the design elements included.

Abstract:

More people are connecting to the Internet, by using computers and other devices. At the same time web applications are replacing locally installed applications. This makes web application usability an interesting and important subject.

The aim of this thesis was to find a set of usability recommendations and guidelines specifically suited for web-based applications. The guidelines were derived both from studies on how web applications and regular web sites should be designed, usability studies for locally installed applications as well as more general usability and interaction design guidelines.

A prototype was created based on the list of guidelines. The prototype was then evaluated from a usability perspective, using heuristic evaluation with Nielsen’s 10 usability heuristics, to test the validity of the guidelines.

The results of the evaluation says that while the list of guidelines can be used to help creating usable web applications, following the guidelines is not alone a mean of getting rid of all usability problems.

Hazzard, Adrian. "Guidelines for composing locative soundtracks." Thesis, University of Nottingham, 2016. http://eprints.nottingham.ac.uk/31967/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis investigates the composition of original adaptive musical soundtracks for locative walking activities such as cultural visiting, mobile games and urban, and nature walks; those semi-formal orchestrated walking experiences. This investigation views the ‘soundtrack’ – similarly to those typically found in ‘display’ media experiences such as films and computer games – as an accompaniment rather than the principal feature of the experience. Thus its role is to support and enhance the walking ‘narrative’. In order to best achieve this the soundtrack needs to be heard as congruent and embedded into the activity. This thesis is oriented towards the field of Human Computer Interaction (HCI) and also at composers of such soundtracks; reflecting the thesis’s intention to develop guidelines for locative soundtrack composition that draws upon detailed mappings between musical structure and spatial structure that drives the creation and experience of both. An initial study explored how a group of participants interpreted and responded to different musical features which adapted to their walking routes. This study revealed that participants formed a set of connections between the physical space and the musical structures. These findings were then used to motivate an in-the-field design, composition and deployment of a large-scale adaptive soundtrack for a public cultural visiting experience, which was subsequently experienced by a group of visitors. This study revealed that the soundtrack was considered congruent with the activity and was deeply engaging, quite distinct from a typical visit to this site. These research activities are reflected upon and discussed to distil a framework of guidelines for composing locative soundtracks that is generalizable to other settings and activities.

Abstract:
Web development is receiving increasing attention among all kinds and sizes of companies. Web presentation has become a hygiene factor for companies nowadays. Fortunately, nowadays web developers can choose from a great number of ready-made technologies instead of developing everything from scratch. However, web development technologies have evolved much in the past 20 years. Due to the increased complexity and diversity of the alternatives, it is getting more and more difficult for companies to make an overall good choice of technologies, especially small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) that usually do not have resources to make a thorough research before choosing. This thesis creates WeTS - Web Technology Stack Guidelines, which contains three parts: process, algorithm and software quality characteristics. By following WeTS, inexperienced web developers, especially in SMEs, can select web technology stacks in an optimal way. Meanwhile, WeTS could be used for experienced practitioners and researchers as a reference to have an overview about modern web development technologies. Based on WeTS Guidelines, this thesis evaluated a number of technology stacks. Then a case study was performed with a startup company named Sqore. By comparing WeTS with Sqore’s technology selection process step by step, this thesis evaluated WeTS Guidelines.

Abstract:
During the past few years the use of mobile devices became extremely popular not only for personal use but also for working. When personal mobile devices are used as working assets the enterprises should search for some suitable ways to protect their data and network from the unmanaged mobile devices. On the other hand, it is widely believed that employees are more productive when they work from their own devices. This arise three questions: what risks these devices are bringing to the organizations, how to protect the company data and network while allowing the employees to work from their devices, and how adapted the real world is to the Bring Your Own Device trend. To answer these questions and the sub-questions deriving from them, an extensive literature study and a survey approach are used. The results from the study show that even though there are many risks for the companies, brought by the use of personal mobile devices, there exist adequate solutions to mitigate these risks. However, the results from the survey approach show that the companies are not very adapted to this trend yet and there exist a need for better understanding of the problem.

Abstract:
Purpose of the Essay: The number of users of "Internet banks" is continuously increasing as more and more become aware of the possibilities offered. Therefor the demands of an "Internet bank" designer also increase to make sure the "Internet bank" is usable to as many different customers as possible. Many guidelines have been developed during the years to help designers to design usable graphical interfaces, but are they useful even when designing "Internet banks"? That is the question that we are trying to answer in this essay. Target group: This essay is first of all aimed at the people designing "Internet banks" and secondly to other designers within the area of Internet application design, to hopefully help them in making even better and more user friendly Internet applications. It can also be useful to students studying graphical Internet design. Method: In the search for answers to our questions we have concentrated on the design of MeritaNordbanken's "Internet bank" "Solo". By using information in books discussing design of interface usability we have tried to find guidelines used in the design of "Solo" and from that evaluated whether or not they are used as intended. We have also used a test group to get a second opinion in the question of guideline usage. The test group was intended to give us insight into the usage from an independent user's point of view. Our opinions were then compared to the users', to give us an answer as to how the guidelines were used and if changes where needed to better support the design of "Solo".

Abstract:
In our technology- and information-infused world, cyberspace is an integral part of modern-day society. As the number of active cyberspace users increases, so too does the chances of a cyber threat finding a vulnerable target increase. All cyber users who are exposed to cyber risks need to be educated about cyber security. Human beings play a key role in the implementation and governing of an entire cybersecurity and cybersafety solution. The effectiveness of any cybersecurity and cybersafety solutions in a societal or individual context is dependent on the human beings involved in the process. If these human beings are either unaware or not knowledgeable about their roles in the security solution they become the weak link in these cybersecurity solutions. It is essential that all users be educated to combat any threats. Children are a particularly vulnerable subgroup within society. They are digital natives and make use of ICT, and online services with increasing frequency, but this does not mean they are knowledgeable about or behaving securely in their cyber activities. Children will be exposed to cyberspace throughout their lifetimes. Therefore, cybersecurity and cybersafety should be taught to children as a life-skill. There is a lack of well-known, comprehensive cybersecurity and cybersafety educational campaigns which target school children. Most existing information security and cybersecurity education campaigns limit their scope. Literature reports mainly on education campaigns focused on primary businesses, government agencies and tertiary education institutions. Additionally, most guidance for the design and implementation of security and safety campaigns: are for an organisational context, only target organisational users, and mostly provide high-level design recommendations. This thesis addressed the lack of guidance for designing and implementing cybersecurity and cybersafety educational campaigns suited to school learners as a target audience. The thesis aimed to offer guidance for designing and implementing education campaigns that educate school learners about cybersecurity and cybersafety. This was done through the implementation of an action research process over a five-year period. The action research process involved cybersecurity and cybersafety educational interventions at multiple schools. A total of 18 actionable guidelines were derived from this research to guide the design and implementation of cybersecurity and cybersafety education campaigns which aim to educate school children.

Abstract:
Background: Clinical guidelines have an important role to play in helping to close the gap between research evidence and clinical practice. In order to fulfill this role, guidelines need to be valid, relevant and comprehensive. Despite advances in chemotherapy and radiotherapy, cancer treatment still remains associated with clinically important oral complications that can impact severely on a patient's quality of life. No clear guidelines exist outlining the optimal oral care strategy for children, teenagers and young adults treated for cancer. Aims: (i) To assess the quality of current clinical guidelines for those working within dentistry; (ii) To develop evidence-based guidelines on mouth care for children, teenagers and young adults being treated for cancer; (iii) To compare the quality of published guidelines and their recommendations in light of supporting research evidence. Methods: (i) Dental guidelines, published in English between 1997-2004, were appraised using the Appraisal of Guidelines Research and Evaluation (AGREE) instrument; (ii) A telephone survey of UK cancer centres was undertaken to establish current practice with regard to mouth care for children treated for cancer. National, evidence-based guidelines were developed following, where appropriate, the established methodology of the Scottish Intercollegiate Guidelines Network (SIGN); (iii) A qualitative assessment of previously published guidelines on mouth care for cancer patients was undertaken. Results: (i) The AGREE instrument identified few examples of good quality dental guidelines; (ii) There is diversity in the mouth care provided to children being treated for cancer in the UK, particularly with regard to the use of routine, preventative oral care therapies. The guideline development process required a combination of an evaluation of research evidence and a formal opinion gathering process. A variety of interventions have been used for the management of oral mucositis, candidiasis, xerostomia and herpes simplex virus; few are supported by the research evidence; (iii) Variation exists in the methods used to produce previously published guidelines on mouth care for cancer patients. Recommendations vary irrespective of the supporting evidence-base. Conclusion: Guidelines need to be assessed for quality before being applied in practice. The guideline development process needs to be transparent, with clear links between recommendations and supporting evidence. There is currently variation in the mouth care provided to children, teenagers and young adults being treated for cancer in the UK. National, evidence-based guidelines may help to reduce this variation. Further research is required into the most effective methods of dissemination and implementation, exploring the role of psychological models of behavioural change.

Abstract:
Guidelines for primary grade (k-3) teachers to use in oral story reading were developed as a means of increasing students' reading achievement. These guidelines were incorporated into primary grade lesson plans. Each lesson plan included a research principle which served as the lesson objective, identified a book for oral reading, and described pre, post, and during activities. The lesson plans were pilot-tested by primary grade teachers at an elementary school site. Data were collected and analyzed to determine teacher perceptions of the effectiveness of the guidelines. This analysis indicated that the teachers perceived the guidelines to be effective. Based on feedback, one additional guideline was added. Conclusions, recommendations, and implications for further research were developed.

Abstract:
Prior to the Iraqi invasion and occupation, there was limited landscaping in Kuwait. Public gardens, highways, streets, governmental and private buildings had been planted to some extent. In the post invasion days the Amir of Kuwait has set a goal to beautify Kuwait by intensified landscaping. Responsibility for this Plan was given to the Public Authority for Agriculture and Fisheries (PAAF) which in turn, commissioned the Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research (KISR) to develop the Plan, in collaboration with PAAF staff. Currently, a Strategic and Master Plan for "Greenery" Development (1995-2010) is being prepared. The plan will consist of guidelines for the gradual landscaping of Kuwait focusing on the urban areas. The objectives of this thesis is to ensure the development of guidelines into a comprehensive body of knowledge which takes these categories into consideration: sociocultural factors, functional factors, environmental/ecological factors and aesthetic factors. It is hoped that this information could be synthesized into a thoughtful, utilitarian landscape design guideline for Kuwait.

Abstract:
Clinical guidelines (CGs) contain a set of directions or principles to assist the health care practitioner with patient care decisions about appropriate diagnostic, therapeutic, or other clinical procedures for specific clinical circumstances. It is widely accepted that the adoption of guideline-execution engines in daily practice would improve the patient care, by standardising the care procedures. Guideline-based systems can constitute part of a knowledge-based decision support system in order to deliver the right knowledge to the right people in the right form at the right time. The automation of the guideline execution process is a basic step towards its widespread use in medical centres.
To achieve this general goal, different topics should be tackled, such as the acquisition of clinical guidelines, its formal verification, and finally its execution. This dissertation focuses on the execution of CGs and proposes the implementation of an agent-based platform in which the actors involved in health care coordinate their activities to perform the complex task of guideline enactment.
The management of medical and organizational knowledge, and the formal representation of the CGs, are two knowledge-related topics addressed in this dissertation and tackled through the design of several application ontologies. The separation of the knowledge from its use is fully intentioned, and allows the CG execution engine to be easily customisable to different medical centres with varying personnel and resources.
In parallel with the execution of CGs, the system handles citizen's preferences and uses them to implement patient-centred services. With respect this issue, the following tasks have been developed: a) definition of the user's criteria, b) use of the patient's profile to rank the alternatives presented to him, c) implementation of an unsupervised learning method to adapt dynamically and automatically the user's profile.
Finally, several ideas of this dissertation are being directly applied in two ongoing funded research projects, including the agent-based execution of CGs and the ontological management of medical and organizational knowledge.

Abstract:
In the past decade the advances in mobile technology have produced new powerful genera-tions of mobile devices that come with ever-increasing computing powers and high-speed wireless connection technologies. It is more attractive than ever to develop mobile multiplayer games and many developers are straining to bring more and more multiplayer games into the market. However, there are not many concrete guidelines or helping-tools for developers programming and designing them. The purpose of this thesis is to investigate the relevant infrastructures of mobile multiplayer games and with the obtained results produce some development guidelines for the developers. Before the commencement of the investigation, the authors reviewed existing literatures using a structured review process. A search for relevant articles was conducted and the references used in the selected articles were searched in order to find additional relevant references for the investigation. There are many different factors and technical aspects to consider when developing mobile multiplayer games. For example different game genres have different prerequisites and it also governs the degree of complexity of the game design. It is important to also consider the dif-ferent mobile networks and the technical capabilities they encompass so that the developed game does not consume more bandwidth than is supported by the different mobile networks. The biggest hurdle to overcome when developing mobile multiplayer games is the issues re-garding network latency. There exist different approaches for handling this and they are brought up in the thesis. In the end of the thesis, guidelines are presented for facilitating the development of mobile multiplayer games.

Abstract:
The aim of this thesis was to investigate the role of outpatient hysteroscopy in modern gynaecological care by conducting a series of systematic reviews and meta-analyses to examine how the procedure can be optimised to reduce pain and by performing a cost effectiveness analysis. The systematic reviews concluded that women undergoing outpatient hysteroscopy should take simple analgesia beforehand and that the hysteroscopist should adopt a vaginoscopic approach using a small diameter, rigid hysteroscope and normal saline as the distension medium. If dilatation of the cervix is required this should be done under a paracervical block. These findings were incorporated into a clinical guideline and the quality of the evidence that the reviews provided was assessed using the SIGN and GRADE methods. A comparison of the assessments found that they gave varying estimates of the quality of evidence and that neither offered a perfect solution to the assessment of evidence quality when writing clinical guidance. The economic analysis found that initial testing with outpatient hysteroscopy was the most cost-effective testing strategy for investigation of heavy menstrual bleeding when compared to other diagnostic tests, regardless of a woman’s wish for future fertility or prior treatment with a levonorgestrel intrauterine system.

This thesis focuses on urban design issues germane to downtown shopping center design. The underlying concept is that, all new downtown shopping centers should attempt to build upon the existing fabric in such a way as to become an integral part of the city. This study first examines the nature of retail districts, the shopping center as a building type, and the recent emergence of the downtown shopping center. Two recently constructed downtown centers will be reviewed, to uncover urban design concerns that are pertinent to the conceptual design of shopping centers in the context of downtowns. The intent of this study is to formulate design guidelines that address the problems of implementing this suburban retail model in the context of a downtown. These guidelines are then applied to a specific site in the form of a sketch problem. This study concludes with an evaluation of the guidelines and some recommendations for designing shopping places that are conceived as an integral part of the city.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Facilitation is considered one of the core leadership skills needed for young managers today. In order to master the principles of facilitation, it is necessary for potential facilitators to have a thorough understanding of the four main elements of facilitation namely, The Task at hand, the personal characteristics, skills and techniques required of facilitators, the group dynamics that come into play in the facilitation process and the facilitation process itself. In the continuously changing environment of business, it is important that managers lead their organisations and teams through change with a facilitation management style. In order to cope with change, it is necessary to understand what change is and how it will affect the organisation and the people working for the organisation. This study intends to give young, talented managers the skills to be effective facilitators in their organisations. It is intended to give talented managers a working document to help them manage in a constantly changing environment where much is expected of them regarding management styles and social interaction.

Component-based Software Engineering (CBSE) and Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) became popular ways to develop software over the last years. During the life-cycle of a software system, several components and services can be developed, evolved and replaced. In production environments, the replacement of core components, such as databases, is often a risky and delicate operation, where several factors and stakeholders should be considered. Service Level Agreement (SLA), according to ITILv3?s official glossary, is ?an agreement between an IT service provider and a customer. The agreement consists on a set of measurable constraints that a service provider must guarantee to its customers.?. In practical terms, SLA is a document that a service provider delivers to its consumers with minimum quality of service (QoS) metrics. This work is intended to assesses and improve the use of SLAs to guide the transitioning process of databases on production environments. In particular, in this work we propose SLA-Based Guidelines/Process to support migrations from a relational database management system (RDBMS) to a NoSQL one. Our study is validated by case studies.

Unemployment has economic and social effects. The main social threat is the stability of the family as an economic and social unit as family relationships suffer should basic needs not be met. The most practical way to combat this problem is through entrepreneurship, where small medium and micro enterprises can address issues such as job creation and economic growth. These enterprises are of particular importance to government and donors resulting in numerous studies being done in especially urban environments. Rural areas have, however, been neglected, owing to the lack of knowledge, funds and initiatives on the part of local authorities. Rural development differs from urban development owing to smaller markets, seasonal fluctuations and slower growth rates, especially in coastal towns. This study was therefore undertaken to provide guidelines to local authorities and community leaders, specifically in Hermanus, to enable them to support local small businesses. As a first step, existing government policy and strategies were investigated (Chapter 2), after which available assistance, on government and non-government level, was discussed (Chapter 3). The Department of Trade and Industry is the main role player in terms of small business development There are also institutions providing financial assistance (for example Khula and the Industrial Development Corporation), institutions providing services (such as NEPA, SABS and CSIR), and finally, institutions providing indirect support (such as SACOB and DBSA). Hermanus as the basis of the study has certain poIicies in place, namely the Integrated Development Plan, Spatial Development Framework and two tourism-related studies (Chapter 4). Individual interviews were held with certain role players in the area (Chapter 5) which resulted in the following: • Role players are not aware of government initiatives in terms of small, medium and micro enterprises in the region. • Role players are unsure if hives/craft: markets could contribute to job creation. • Role players are concerned about job creation but not through small, medium and micro enterprises as a vehicle. Chapter 6 concludes with two success stories, namely Stutterheim and Melkhoutfontein, and provides broad guidelines in terms of small business development in Hermanus.

Abstract:
This study explores an approach to app icon legibility enhancement. Four areas of research are included: (1) design process; (2) the trend of logo/app icon redesign; (3) graphic legibility and (4) graphic simplification. It presents the results of five experiments designed to capture and compare design principles. Firstly, the result categorised the characteristics of simple shape. Secondly, the agreement of simplification judgement was summarised based on the average score of participants. Thirdly, the impact of each simplification criterion was compared and represented as a ratio; a measurement template and simplification guidelines were also generated at this stage. Fourthly, how this design principle (simplification guidelines) can be applied in practical use by student designers was examined. Finally, the legibility enhancement test was proved by the results of reaction time and accuracy improvement. The findings of this study determined the impact of simplification criteria with regard to: component, open-closed, weight, form, symmetry, angles and straight-curved respectively. After identifying these design principles (simplification guidelines), graphic designers, user interface designers and other users will be enabled to design a more legible logo/app icon design required for display on small devices.

Cash management practices for corporate treasurers are in a state of instability in recent years. Events during the credit crisis of 2008 have had an impact on how organization’s cash positions are managed. This has led corporate treasurers to juggle unprecedented amounts of cash across multiple bank counterparties and invest these funds based on previous investment policies with potentially inflexible limits. Many regulations have been passed to strengthen domestic and global financial systems, yet the risk of default is not completely removed and there are many uncertain ties that corporates face. To succeed in the uncertain financial environment, counterparty risk tools must be put in place to improve the visibility of potential operational risk, along with a higher frequency of reviewing and updating investment policies. It is crucial for corporates to look beyond the traditional market perceptions and bank credit ratings to evaluate counterparty risk. Although these continue to be a valuable metric, they should be incorporated with other forward looking market risk metrics such as credit default swaps, capital and asset resiliency metrics, and growth and profitability metrics to their current investment guidelines review. By integrating risk metrics to help formulate an investment policy, corporates can adapt to the changing financial environment. This thesis examined methodologies to develop a more accurate and immediate viewpoint of counterparty creditworthiness. This was done through the creation of models using market information to set values to view the strength of counterparties and the likelihood of default. Models were created for both financial institutions and countries where cash or investments are placed. Depending on the models, this restricts the permissible investment options that an institution or country has. This approach allows the company to invest more with higher rated counterparties, and sets a maximum to those who are deemed high risk of default. The findings of this thesis identified that it is crucial to classify the right metrics and look beyond traditional market perceptions and bank credit ratings. By implementing a balanced process that regularly monitors current market indicators of counterparty risk, an organization will be in a stronger position to define and determine the potential risk. This creates a balanced view of both backward looking and forward looking metrics such as long term debt ratings and credit default swaps. These metrics were useful indicators of a counterparty’s strength. Because of the wide range of information available and cost, it went beyond the resources of the company to perform detailed ongoing analysis. It was also identified that a risk-adjusted approach to setting counterparty limits is crucial for managing counterparty exposure and the risk of default. To optimize liquidity, it is in the company’s best interest to place higher balances in institutions with the lowest risk of default. Grouping banks into tiers and assigning a percentage of total balance to each tier allows for financial institutions to have a specific limit capacity. Incorporating these tools on a frequent basis allows for real-time analysis of counterparty exposure and risk.

Abstract:
Background and Objectives Bias in research and the methods used for developing public health guidelines may put the public’s health at risk. This dissertation explores three possible sources of influence on the recommendations made in public health guidelines: • Commercial Influences on Nutrition Research: Primary research studies and systematic reviews form the evidence base for dietary guidelines. The association between funding sources and the outcomes of nutrition studies was therefore explored; • Methods Used for Public Health Guideline Development: Heterogenous methodologies used in the development of public health guidelines may lead to conflicting recommendations. I conducted a systematic analysis of the methods used in their development; • Social Influences on Public Health Guideline Development: The interactions within guideline groups may be a significant influence on the final recommendations made. I aimed to understand the experiences of the participants involved in developing public health guidelines. Methods My methods included: 1) Meta-analysis and systematic review to measure bias in primary nutrition research; 2) Content analysis to understand the methods used in synthesising evidence for public health guidance development; and 3) Qualitative analysis of interviews to understand social influences on guideline development. Results My major findings were: I found an association with industry sponsorship with the outcomes of studies, even when controlling for the internal validity between the studies; I established heterogenous methodologies are being used by organisations that conduct hazard identification and risk assessment; and I identified that the public health guideline process in Australia is a divided one. Conclusions Through greater transparency of funding practices, the development of nutrition study registries and improvements in risk of bias tools used to evaluate the evidence, industry influence on the outcomes of nutrition studies relevant to dietary guidelines can be accounted for. Further, the use of standardised, transparent methodological processes and collaboration between systematic review teams and guideline groups will lead to increased comparability and validity of guidelines and ensure that the recommendations made from them will protect the public’s health.

Abstract:
Philosophiae Doctor - PhD
The number of women joining the formal waged labour market has been visibly increasing since the 1950s to become half of the employees in the developed economies (McAdam & Marlow, 2010; OECD, 2003). Women entrepreneurship has also been growing globally. According to literature, since 2006, there is an estimated 7.7 million majority of women-owned businesses and a further 2.7 million joint-owned other businesses in the United States of America (Weeks, 2016). Literature also indicates that the gender gap is narrowing, and many changes have been identified relating to the status of women and the conditions under which women live (Commission of Gender SA, 2007). Measures have been put together by governments, and civil society to address challenges facing women and these measures include, amongst others, funding for women and starting co-operatives as a vehicle to job creation and poverty alleviation. It has been reported that in South Africa, most of the newly established co-operatives are registered by black women in townships and the rural areas (DTI, 2012). Despite the support from the South African government, the co-operatives are reported to have a low survival rate. The aim of this research was to develop guidelines for sustainable women co-operatives using a multiple case study. The Department of Small Business Development (DSBD) is the custodian of all the activities of co-operatives within government and has several agreements with other government departments. However, it was difficult to get the information on how many government departments are having an agreement with the DSBD and the nature of the agreement. Purposive sampling was applied in selecting government directors and fifteen co-operatives interviewed. The study was implemented in two phases. The first phase was Data Collection, which comprised of three stages:  Stage one - scoping review of the co-operatives,  Stage two - interviews with the directors responsible for co-operatives in the government departments and government agencies mentioned above,  Stage three - seven focus groups consisting of a minimum of three members were conducted. In-depth interviews were conducted with the remaining eight co-operatives. Not all members of the selected co-operatives were available during the visit due to various reasons which included, operational requirements, training, illness and other reasons which were not disclosed. Phase two involved developing the guidelines for sustainable women co-operatives. The interview with the fifteen selected co-operatives was carried out in the four provinces of Gauteng, Free State, Limpopo and Mpumalanga. The four co-operatives based in Mpumalanga that were recommended for inclusion by SEDA; were already visited and interviewed by the SEDA researchers in 2016. The data were analysed individually first, and then a cross-case analysis was applied (Khan & Van Wynsberghe, 2008). The cross-case analysis was done to enable the researcher to highlight common and different factors in events, activities and processes as well as to assist the researcher to form a strong opinion on which elements contributed to the success of the selected co-operatives. Confidentiality of the participants was maintained by identifying the co-operatives alphabetically from A to O. The responses from the directors of government departments were also presented as Organisation A up to H. The guidelines drawn were presented to the panel of experts for their input. Key elements emanating from the results were used to formulate the guidelines and are: 1) improved relationships where co-operatives should be formed by people who have either worked together before or had known each other before; 2) the size of co-operative should be considered in order to minimise the possibilities of in-fighting; 3) training to be customised 4) mentorship should be available to strengthen co-operative`s development; 5) co-operatives needed sector related information upon start-up; 6) ethical values of passion, respect for each other, perseverance and trust for each other should be shared by all; 7) financial support required from relevant stakeholders; 8) co-operatives needed access to markets for their products/ services; 9) good governance to be maintained for accountability; 10) all the co-operatives, new and old, should undertake training on the importance of organisational structure and be assisted in designing their organisational structures; 11) keeping the information about the co-operatives updated will make it easy for potential assistance to reach co-operatives; 12) a strong national apex body needed to be the real voice of the co-operatives. The study makes a strong recommendation for the establishment of the Co-operative Development Agency as stipulated by the Co-operative Amendment Act No. 6 of 2013.

Abstract:

The majority of tree and shrub roots lie within the top two feet of soil and extend one and a half to four times the width of the crown, the above ground portion of the plants. These roots hold the plant in place and absorb most of the water and nutrients. Steps taken during planting to encourage the growth of these roots can reduce establishment time and improve plant survival and stability. This publication provides information on material requirements, drainage test, and other issues to consider when planting trees and shrubs.
