[EN] The need for ever increasing data rate of modern communication systems has motivated companies in the space sector to exploit higher frequency bands, such as Ku, K and Ka, in order to offer wider bandwidths to their customers. However, as the frequency increases, the wavelength decreases, and all waveguide hardware becomes smaller and more sensitive to deviations from the ideal dimensions that normally occur when manufacturing the devices. In order to compensate for these deviations (or errors), tuning elements must then be added to the hardware and included in the design process. In this context, therefore, we focus on the investigation of novel design strategies for filters and multiplexers with the objective of including all necessary non-ideal factors in the design process. It is important to note in this context that, once the filters are manufactured, the tuning elements are usually adjusted manually until the desired target performance has been achieved. However, successfully performing this task requires a considerable amount of time and very significant previous experience in tuning microwave filters. Consequently, an additional goal of our research work is to propose efficient and systematic tuning procedures so that anyone, regardless of their previous tuning experience, can successfully perform this difficult task. In addition to the increasing data rates, another current challenge of advanced communication systems is the ability to be reconfigured remotely to adjust to changes in costumer demands. The use of multi-function or reconfigurable devices is then an attractive possible solution. In this context, therefore, we also investigate new families of multi-band waveguide filters that can be used to accommodate several pass bands in the same filtering device. Furthermore, we also propose a new family of reconfigurable devices with several discrete states that can be easily controlled remotely.

Full textThe emergence of novel microwave and millimeter wave applications in the automotive and communication sectors including the internet of things (IoT), the fifth generation of mobile (5G), and the new space, require the development of new alternative technologies providing a suitable tradeoff in terms of size, weight, power, and cost (SWaP C). This change of paradigm is essentially due to the increase of data rate, leading to the growth of bandwidth. As a substantially increasing number of systems are competing for frequency spectrum occupancy, the microwave community is pushed to develop new innovative systems at higher frequency with an increased efficiency. This change of paradigm has highly stimulated the development of low cost, high performance, highly integrated, compact, and mass producible microwave and millimeter wave systems. At the heart of a system, microwave and millimeter wave filters are essential devices allowing to select the desired information. Low loss filters are highly desired in transmitter and receiver circuits to achieve high efficiency and low noise figures. The conventional way to achieve low loss performance is to use high quality factor resonators. For most high performance applications, the air-filled rectangular waveguide (RWG) technology is used to comply with the severe specifications requested by the industry. Nevertheless, this technology becomes prohibitive in terms of cost where a mass production is needed. To reduce the cost of such components, the use of the so called substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) emerging technology has been proposed. This technology benefits from low cost and highly integrated properties. The SIW technology is a good candidate for application that needs low cost with medium insertion loss, but for high performance applications, such as the emerging new space, the achieved performances are not compliant with the severe specifications, making the implementation of the SIW technology for high performance applications restrictive.Recently, the alternative air filled substrate integrated waveguide (AFSIW), based on multilayer printed circuit board (PCB) is expected to fulfill satellite constellation application requirements as it offers a compromise between the conventional RWG and SIW technologies. This structure aims to dramatically reduce the insertion loss of the propagation medium, while maintaining the high integration and low cost aspect. Hence making it a potential good candidate for future generation of satellite payloads.Taking into consideration the presented context, the work carried out during this Ph.D. thesis has been led towards the implementation of the AFSIW for the new space applications. A particular attention has been given to the proposal, analysis, development, and implementation of innovative and original concepts for microwave filtering functions. The proposed work is based on the classic waveguide theory taking advantage of the standard PCB process to allow the development of improved and novel filters and multiplexer for space applications. This Ph.D. thesis highlights the last advances made on the development of microwave filters and multiplexer using the AFSIW technology. This includes the starting ideas, theoretical demonstrations, simulations, and experimental validations with fabricated prototypes. The results of this work are promising and demonstrate the relevance of the technology for its implementation in future satellite payload systems. In fact, a sub system of a satellite payload has been developed in this thesis to answer the need of the European Space Agency (ESA) and the Centre National d’Études Spatiales (CNES). The demonstrated concepts gained from this thesis can be considered as a good base to further develop and popularize the AFSIW technology not only for space applications but also for ground systems

Full textENGLISH ABSTRACT: This dissertation presents a synthesis method for broadband high-power absorptive microwave lters by cascading a wide stop-band wa e-iron lter with an absorptive harmonic pad. The classical image impedance synthesis methods for wa e-iron lters are updated to allow for non-uniform boss patterns, which enable control over both the stop-band attenuation and pass-band re ection of the lter. By optimising an accurate circuit model equivalent, computationally intensive numerical EM optimisation are avoided. The nonuniform wa e-iron lter achieves the same electrical speci cation as similar lters in literature, but in a smaller form factor. The prototype presented displays less than -21 dB in-band re ection over 8.5 - 10.5 GHz, with stop-band attenuation in excess of 50 dB over the harmonic bands 17 - 31.5 GHz and 30 dB over the 34 - 42 GHz. The prototype is designed to handling 4 kW peak power incident in the transmitted band, and is 130 mm in length. Minimal full-wave tuning is required post-synthesis, and good agreement is found between synthesised and measured responses. Additionally, a completely novel oblique wa e-iron boss pattern is proposed. For the absorptive harmonic pad, transversal broadwall slots in rectangular waveguide, coupling to an absorptive auxiliary guide, are investigated in the presence of standing wave surface current distributions. An accurate circuit model description of the cascaded structure is developed, and optimised to provide a required level of input match in the presence of an arbitrary re ective lter. Using numerical port parameter data of the wa eiron lter, a harmonic pad is developed that provides -12.5 dB input re ection match across the band 17 - 21 GHz with up to 1 kW peak incident power handling capability, yet is only 33 mm in length. Again, good agreement is found between synthesised and measured responses of the cascaded structure.

Full textENGLISH ABSTRACT: Multi-mode coupled cavity filters have been the mainstay of commercial satellite communications systems since their introduction in 1970. Multi-mode filters use more than one resonant mode in a single cavity resonator, thereby reducing the size and weight of the filter. This is especially advantageous for satellite applications where the size and weight of the communications payload must be minimised. The use of more modes also increases the complexity of the filter design. Iris design plays an integral part in the design of multi-mode coupled cavity filters. Currently, irises are mostly designed using either the small aperture theory derived by Bethe, or a standard numerical technique. A recent study comparing these two techniques shows that approximations made in standard correction factors applied to small aperture theory, can lead to unacceptable errors. While numerical techniques are clearly required for the accurate design of complex irises, the standard numerical technique is only suited to the design of relatively simple iris structures. This dissertation presents three new CAD procedures for the design of irises in multi-mode coupled cavity devices. The new procedures are verified by numerical examples and measurements. Two new multi-mode coupled cavity devices were designed and tested using the CAD procedures developed in this work. The first is a new diplexer structure that realises two fourth order Chebyschev filter channels in three quadruple-mode cavities. Through correct placement and accurate design of irises, channel isolation was increased beyond that of existing multi-mode diplexer structures. The second application is the development of a new coupling structure for the replacement of coupling and tuning screws. A third order triple-mode cavity filter, including this new fixed coupling element, was designed using the CAD procedures developed in this dissertation.

Full textGuided Mode Resonance Filters ( GMRF ) are a new generation of narrowband optical filters and are a very promising alternative to conventional multilayer Fabry-Perot filters. The resonance peak of GMRF can be spectrally extremely thin and with a centering wavelength tunable according to the angle of incidence of the light. These properties are particularly important for spectroscopy. Previous works have helped to implement an original structure with two 1D crossed gratings. The performance of this filter overpasses those of conventional filters in their spectral subnanometric response, tunability and their ability to overcome the influence of the polarization of the incident wave under oblique incidence. The aim of this work is to explore the final performances of such devices in terms of resolution and rejection rate, thanks to an approach combining theory, fabrication technology and characterization. We present experimental results of a polarization independent reflective filter, tunable over 40nm with a tunability of 8.3nm / °, having a reflection of 10-3 on a 90nm range outside the resonance and a quality factor over 5000

Full textDense wavelength division multiplexing (D. W. D. M. ) significantly increases the optical telecommunication transmission rates. To separate the channels, narrow band spectral filters are necessary. Resonant gratings, composed with a grating engraved on a planar waveguide, are a potential solution. These structures support eigenmodes, which can be excited by a wave coming out of an optical fiber. The excitation creates a resonance peak in the reflected beam, for a given wavelength and incidence angle. In general, the peak does not exhibit the qualities required for the D. W. D. M. : at oblique incidence, the angular and spectral tolerances are weak, and the line shapes are polarization dependent. Combining photonic crystals concepts, a rigorous phenomenological theory, and a perturbative theory, we design a filter that meet all the conditions imposed by the D. W. D. M.

Full textSilicon photonics is a dynamic research field of integrated optics. It allows to miniaturize numerous optical functionalities such as lasers, electro-optical modulators, routers, detectors, for telecom wavelengths, LIDAR, sensor, metrology or even spectroscopy, all while been able to propose large scale production high precision technologies. On another side, quantum optics suffers from difficulties to scale optical systems, requires extreme stability, perfect alignment, and many bulky optical elements, while solving these issues follows a natural path in integrated photonics. Development of integrated quantum photonics can thus open the door to cheap, powerful, and scalable systems for quantum cryptography, telecoms, and computation. In a significant way, quantum requirements are not the ones of classical circuits with respect to photonic components and circuits. The generation of quantum states indeed requires more than 100dB of pump laser rejection, while being able to manage ultra-low useful optical signals and get rid of on-chip optical noise. In this context, this thesis is dedicated to the study, dimension, realization, and characterization of silicon photonic components and circuits for quantum optics on a chip. The target goal is to generate entangled states in energy-time and manipulate them on chip. The qualification of the quantum properties is also explored to better understand the limitations of the silicon platform in the followed objectives. Another choice of this work is to stay in telecoms wavelength and aligned with the standard channels (ITU grid), to only use off-the-shelf components, all while been CMOS compatible and compliant with standard fabrication process, this to allow the possibility to produce on large scale

Full textA diffraction grating deposited above a dielectric guide makes it possible to couple the incident light for a particular wavelength and a particular incidence. The spectral response of such an hybrid structure, called as resonant grating, presents a peak in reflectivity which can reach 100 % when the period of the grating is lower than the wavelength. We take advantage of this resonance effect for not ch filtering applications. The numerical calculation of the efficiency of these components reveals the principal deffect : the high sensitivity to the incident angle. Inorder to improve the angular tolerance, we study the modification of the dispersion curves induced by the periodic perturbation. We show that it is possible to optimize the geometry of the component to dissociate the spectral width of the angular width. The spectral characterization of the first achievements shows that these hybrid structures combine a very narrow bandwitdth and a very broad band of rejection, essential criteria for the applications of filtering in the optical telecommunication field. Last, we numerically study the radiation of a dipole located inside these hybrid structures. Their capacity of coupling makes it possible to extract the light emitted by a luminescent atom in the guided modes of a dielectric microactivity. Moreover, the angular selectivity of resonant gratings is an asset to make this radiation directive

Presenting also lowattenuation loss, the developed transmission lines show very high quality factor (higher than 40at 60 GHz). The precise study of the electromagnetism field leads to an electrical model forS-CPWs. This is the first model that takes the losses in this topology into account. Then, somebasic passive circuits designed with S-CPWs and characterized up to 110 GHz are presented invarious CMOS technologies. The low insertion losses and relative low surfaces of a powerdivider and a passband filter show the great interest of S-CPW to integrate compact passivecircuits in classical CMOS technologies at millimeter-wave frequencies

Full textIn this work, we present an information filtering method that selects from a set of documents their most significant excerpts in relation to an user profile. We developed a method which takes into account the topical heterogeneity of the information needs of an user to produce a multi-document summary that is specific of its requirements. The information needs of an user are represented by an user profile that is structured from a topical viewpoint. More precisely, we chose to structure user profiles according to a topical criterion: a profile is a set of terms that are grouped into topically homogeneous subsets. Each of these subsets represents a sub-topic of the profile. The summarizing of documents is based on the extraction of segments that are the most likely to match with the profile. The first step of this extraction is the filtering document step. The input documents are pre-processed, both for selecting and normalizing their content words and segmenting them into topically coherent segments. The filtering is based on the matching of the profile and the topical segments of documents. The result of this matching is first used for discarding the documents without any relation with the profile and then, for selecting the excerpts in relation with the profile. This selection step is also based on the detection of the vocabulary of segments that is closely linked to the profile. When a global compatibility between the profile and the document is found, an additional topical analysis is performed to expand the vocabulary defining each sub-topic of the profile and to add to it the terms of the document that are linked to this sub-topic but that are not already present in the profile. This expansion is a way for selecting in a more reliable way excerpts that are linked to profiles but also for selecting excerpts that may bring new and interesting information about their topics. The third step performs information fusion by detecting and removing redundancies among the selected segments. This operation is first achieved among the segments of a document and then, among the segments coming from all the selected documents. Finally, the fourth step is turned toward users: the selected segments are ranked according to their significance, both from the viewpoint of the profile and the viewpoint of documents, and they are pruned for limiting the amount of text to read. This method was implemented by the REDUIT system, whose the evaluation showed that taking into account the topical heterogeneity of profiles can improve the results of the processes at the different steps of the building the a multi-document summary

Full textThe mobile phone industry needs for small frequency filtering devices have recently created a strong interest in the simulation of surface acoustic waves propagation. RF range filtering lays stress on the need for new structures, to bypass the drawbacks of formerly used technical solutions. In this context, the reported work shows that efficient RF filters can be designed on stratified structures using thin films. Specific models were developed to characterize the acoustic propagation in such layered media. Theoretical results are compared to experimental measurements performed within the OASIS project. Indeed, the technological part of the project is focussed on a new process for transferring oriented films on silicon substrates. Acoustic propagation in piezoelectric plates is also analysed for sensor applications. Finally, novel excitation geometries are studied in order to design future high frequency compact devices

Full textThis manuscript presents a baseline-free quantitative method for the imaging of corrosion flaws present in thin plates. This method only requires an embedded guided waves sensors network in a fully passive way. The field ofapplications are Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) of critical structures with heavy constrains on both sensors intrusiveness and diagnostic reliability. A promising solution allowing to increase the number of measurement points without increasing the intrusiveness of the system is provided by the Fiber Bragg Gratings (FBGs). However, unlike piezoelectric transducers generally used in SHM, the FBGs cannot emit elastic waves. The idea consists in using passive methods in order to retrieve the Green function from elastic diffuse fields - naturally present in structures - measured simultaneously between two sensors. In this manuscript, two passive methods are studied: the ambient noise correlation and the passive inverse filter. It is shown that the latter gives better results when coupled with tomography. Several tomography algorithms are assessed with numerical simulations and then applied to active and passive datasets measured by a PZT network. In order to make passive tomography robust, a time of flight identification method is proposed, based on a time-frequency representation. Finally, a novel experimental demonstration of passive measurements with FBGs only is presented, suggesting high potential for FBGs passive tomography
