Abstract:
We have participated in the creation of almost two terabytes of tables aimed at cracking A5/1, the most common ciphering algorithm used in GSM. Given 114-bit of known plaintext, we are able to recover the session key with a hit rate of 19%. The tables are expected to be unique as they provide the best coverage yet known to the authors, and they are the first step in a real-world passive attack against GSM. An initial investigation and analysis into the air interface of GSM were performed, from both a theoretical and practical point of view. These examinations would be essential in order to utilize the generated tables in a practical attack.Additionally, a rogue GSM network was built and deployed without enabling ciphering and frequency hopping. This active attack was purely based on open-source software and hardware, implying that real GSM networks could be spoofed with resources available to the general public.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This thesis presents a feasibility study on unobtrusive localization of GSM en- abled cellphones using a Fake Base Station (FBS). An FBS is a radio transceiver that emulates the behaviour of a legitimate GSM Base Station (BS) to fool unal- tered cellphones to connect with it. This feasibility study investigates how an FBS can be utilized to estimate positions of connected cellphones in an area of interest. We present a proof of concept system that consists of a mobile FBS that measures the Time Of Arrival (TOA) and Received Signal Strength (RSS) to a cell- phone. The positions of the mobile FBS are determined with GPS. We employ calibration-free localization algorithms as we assume unknown environments and unknown hardware. Our experiments in an outdoor 180x100 m2 Line-Of- Sight (LOS) environment show that our calibration-free localization algorithms provide an average localization error less than 10 meters, which is sufficient for most applications of interest. In addition, our experiments show that RSS-based localization outperforms TOA-based localization when the average distance be- tween the FBS and cellphone is roughly 50 meters. Our experiments show that TOA-based localization outperforms RSS-based localization when the average dis- tance increases to roughly 75 meters. This research is part of the Smart Savannah project in which a wide range of different surveillance systems are developed to protect rhinos from poachers. We envision that our localization system can be used to detect and localize these poachers in an unobtrusive way. In addition, we envision that our localization sys- tem can be used in Search And Rescue (SAR) operations to estimate the positions of cellphones of missing persons.

Abstract:
In telecommunications in general and in GSM in particular, the handover is a feature that guarantees a smooth transition of a call from one base station - that is for the purpose of this project an antenna - to another. In the recent ten years, the amount of data traffic through mobile telecommunications has doubled annually, putting an enormous strain on the network and forcing operators to upgrade with more and more base stations and new features. Although 3G and 4G are responsible for data traffic in most countries, GSM still provides more than 80% of the coverage for mobile devices around the world. Due to the increase in data traffic, 3G and 4G need to use more and more frequencies at the expense of GSM. An optimization of the GSM network is thus vital. In this project, we research two methods to automatically choose the parameters of interest (PoI) that govern the handover feature in each cell which is, roughly speaking, the area of coverage of one antenna. In one of these methods, the choice of cell- and cell-to-cell-specific parameters has its origins in control theory while the other method is based on mathematical optimization. In the mathematical sense, our goal is to optimize the quality of service over PoIs. Extensive simulations have been run using these PoIs in order to evaluate if and how the two different methods can effectively be used in reality. Several useful insights have been gained that will provide the basis for future work. The optimization approach in particular has proved to deliver good results within the limitations of the simulated environment used for testing.

Abstract:
The current trend in the cellular networks to reduce the amount of spectrum dedicated toGSM networks put a burden on the radio access part to keep the promised quality of service. In addition to the focus of operators on other radio access technologies and data networkshave raised the need to direct most of the effort towards other activities. Subsequently newtechniques are needed to compensate for the lack of time and resources to keep GSMnetworks as optimized as possible. The handover functionality is in the heart of any cellular system. It is more important whendelay is not tolerated. Therefore, the choice of its parameters is important. These parametersare chosen based on network performance and traffic load patterns among other criteria. It isa time consuming task, and investigating in a way to automatically choose appropriatesettings for its parameters is desired. This work investigates the possibility of such an automated procedure. A simulationenvironment is developed in order to run simulations. An automated function that utilizesthe principles of control theory, optimization, and live networks statistics is developed andused to build an algorithm to regulate the settings of the handover procedure.By regulating four parameters from the handover procedure, and by introducing differenttraffic loads, frequency reuse and mobility patterns, while testing the results against a set ofperformance metrics in the simulator. The results show better network performance in termsof performance metrics when the regulating algorithm is applied than when manuallychoosing values of these four parameters. However, further investigation shows that thealgorithm under an aggressive mobility pattern imitating a high speed moving users, mightneed a stopping rule. The algorithm tries to find a better network performance even if thecurrent metrics are acceptable. This appears to be invalid approach under some aggressivemodels.

Månsson, Jonas. "Principles for Channel Allocation in GSM." Thesis, Linköping University, Department of Electrical Engineering, 2008. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:liu:diva-10697.

Full text
Abstract:

In today's GSM system there is a complex resource situation when it comes to the scarce TDMA channels in the air interface, the time slots. There are both voice call services that use one or a half time slot and there are packet data users, that may share time slots with other packet data users, and they can use multiple channels at the same time. Allocating time to users is a crucial part in the system and it may affect the performance for the end user substantially.

In the future there may be more types of services than just voice and packet data and that these services may have specific demands on their channels, time slots. That means they would not be able to use just any of the available channels. The way to "give" services channels is what is called channel allocation. In this thesis four different services and three different principles for channel allocation is implemented in a Matlab simulator and simulated. The thesis goal is to determine which principle is best for which mix of services.

The principles that have been investigated are Flexible Algorithm that lets all services use all channels, Fix Dedication Algorithm where all channels are dedicated to a service and only can be used by that one and finally Soft Dedication Algorithm where all channels are dedicated to a service but may be used by other services when it is not needed by the preferred one.

The conclusion is, simplified, that the Soft Dedication Algorithm generates low blocking rates, high bandwidth and that it is a quite robust principle although the borrowing user may be preempted. It may not always be the best one but over all it is the one to prefer.

This report studies a low cost hardware platform for Fleet Management Services, FMS. The platform manages vehicle data, positioning and wireless communication. The core of the platform is a new kind of ‘intelligent’ GSM modem, called a GSM module. A GSM module is basically a stripped down mobile phone that allows embedded third party application code and has an IP-stack. The report reviews the modules available on the market today and presents experiences from the implementation of a prototype based on the Aplicom A12 module. The main conclusion is that the concept is feasible though the modules' limited performance must be considered in the design.

Abstract:

With the growth of the Internet a lot of different services has emerged. These services are often accompanied by some kind of security system. Since most of these services are stand-alone systems, a whole range of different authentication systems have been developed. Each using one of several kinds of authentication, with one or more proofs of identity. The SIM card used in mobile phones is an identifying token, containing strong authentication mechanisms. If services could utilize the SIM for authentication it would provide both a more secure solution, in addition to increased simplicity for the user. This master thesis builds on a project that investigated how the security properties of a system can be improved by adding an extra factor to the authentication process - something the user has, or more specifically the GSM SIM card. That project concluded by suggesting an overall design for a VPN Authentication System based on the security mechanisms in GSM. This thesis continues that work by analyzing that design, and describing the implementation of a prototype utilizing the mechanisms available.

Abstract:
For most time-based positioning techniques, synchronization between the objectsin the system is of great importance. GPS (global positioning system) signalshave been found very useful in this area. However, there are some shortcomingsof these satellite signals, making the system vulnerable. The aim of this masterthesis is to investigate an alternative method for synchronization, independent ofGPS signals, which could be used as a complement. The proposed method takesadvantage of the broadcast signals from telecommunication towers, and use themfor calculation of the synchronization error between two receivers. By looking atthe time difference between arrival times at the receivers, and compare it to thetrue time difference, the synchronization error can be found. A precondition isthat the locations of the receivers as well as the tele tower are known beforehand,so that the true time difference can be calculated using geometry. The arrival times are determined through correlation between the received signalsand known training bits, which are a part of the transmission sequence. Forverification, experiments were made on localization of a mobile phone in theGSM (global system of mobile communications) network. This researchwas a collaboration with FOI, the Swedish Defense Research Agency, where most of the work was done.

Everyone who develops hardware wants to do this as fast as possible and for low costs. Time to the market must be shortened because the competition is very substantial. This can be done by using special development software called high level synthesis tools. HLS tools automatically generate HDL RTL code and helps developers to get all possible architectures of project. HLS tools use an algorithmic C code as input information. There is the possibility for software engineers to develop hardware too. It seems that HLS is very good technology, but HLS tools are not widely used today. It must be found the reasons of this problem and opportunities how this problem can be solved. An experiment is made by solving this problem. A GSM LPC algorithm is written by hand from C description to VHDL RTL. This experiment explains problems of high level synthesis. With the purpose HLS tools to use widely, high level of abstraction (C/C++) code must be written with restrictions. There must be no pointer variables and pointer arithmetic, no recursion, no difficult operations, no dynamic memory allocation. Engineers have to think like hardware.

Patients with different diseases may faint or lose consciousness and require emergency assistance. They cannot know in advance that they will need help. Today, there are security alarms but communication and technology of these alarms have very limited functions. This report describes a final year project where we developed a prototype of a product, GSM- personal alarm. The prototype continuously monitors the patient's pulse and if the pulse is greater than or less than the threshold values specified by the doctor, the alarm system will send an SMS message to an alarm help receiver. The system works equally well at home or outdoors. It uses the GSM network and thus increases the communication range.

Abstract:
Using communication signals for radar applications has been a major area of research in radar engineering. In the recent years, due to the widely available wireless signals, a new area of research called commensal radars has emerged. Commensal radars use available wireless Radio Frequency (RF) signals to detect and track targets of interest. This is achieved by placing two antennas, one towards the transmitting base station and the other towards the surveillance area. The signal received by these two antennas are correlated to determine the location and velocity of the target. When a signal passes through a channel, it reflects off the obstacles within its path. These reflections usually degrade quality of the signal and cause interference to the telecommunication systems. To mitigate the effects of the channel on a signal these systems transmit a known bit sequence within each frame. Our goal, with this thesis, is to design and implement a working prototype of a novel architecture for the commensal radar system, which uses these known bit sequences to extract the channel information and determine events of interest. The major novelties of the system are as follows. Firstly, this system will be built upon existing communication systems using Software Defined Radio (SDR) technology. Secondly, this design eliminates the need for a reference antenna, which reduces the cost of the system and creates an opportunity to make the system portable. We name this system Communication-Sensing (CommSense). Since, our plan is to use Global System for Mobile Communication (GSM) as the parent system for the prototype development, we decide to update the name to GSM based Communication-Sensing (GSM-CommSense) system. This thesis begins with theoretical analysis of the feasibility of the GSM-CommSense system. First of all, we perform a link budget analysis to determine the power requirements for the system. Then we calculate the ambiguity function and Cram´er-Rao Lower Bound (CRLB) for a two-path received signal model. With encouraging theoretical results, we design a prototype of the system that can capture real GSM base station broadcast signals. After the design of the GSMCommSense system, we capture channel data from multiple locations with varying environmental conditions. The aim for this set of experiment is to be able to distinguish between different environmental conditions. Then, we performed statistical analysis on the data by means of Probability Density Function (PDF) fitting, a goodness-of-fit test called chi-square test and a clustering algorithm called Principal Components Analysis (PCA). We have presented the results from each analysis and discussed them in detail. Upon, receiving positive results in each step we have decided to move towards using learning algorithms to categorise the data captured by the system. We have compared two widely accepted supervised learning algorithms, called Support Vector Machines (SVM) and Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP). The results showed that with the current hardware capabilities of the system and the amount of data available per GSM frame, the performance of SVM is better than MLP. Thus, we have used SVM to classify two events of detection and classification across a wall. We have presented our findings and discussed the results in detail. We conclude our current work and provide scope for future work in development and analysis of the GSM-CommSense system.

Abstract:
The Voice Mail Service (VMS) enables forwarding of calls to a dedicated Voice Mail Server (VMS) on behalf of the call receiving subscriber during certain conditions such as 'busy subscriber', 'no answer', 'always', etc. The standardization forum 3GPP has specified the Global System for Mobile communication (GSM) while the standardization forum ITU-T has specified the Integrated Services Digital Networks  (ISDN) User Part (ISUP) call control protocol. Both of these standards rely on the use of Time Division Multiplex (TDM) as a media bearer and SS7 as signalling bearer, where both bearers require use of very expensive telecom-specific hardware. The thesis proposes the solution to use RTP as media bearer and IP as signalling bearer towards the handset in GSM and only use TDM as media bearer and SS7 as signalling bearer towards the VMS. The thesis demonstrates  the feasibility and the advantages provided, by creating an implementation in Erlang/OTP and testing it to check if it confirms to the specification.

Abstract:
Business artifacts are a growing topic in service oriented computing. Artifact systems include both data and process descriptions at interface level thereby providing more sophisticated and powerful service inter-operation capabilities. The Guard-Stage-Milestone (GSM) language provides a novel framework for specifying artifact systems that features declarative descriptions of the intended behaviour without requiring an explicit specification of the control flow. While much of the research is focused on the design, deployment and maintenance of GSM programs, the verification of this formalism has received less attention. This thesis aims to contribute to the topic. We put forward a holistic methodology for the practical verification of GSM-based multi-agent systems via model checking. The formal verification faces several challenges: the declarative nature of GSM programs; the mechanisms for data hiding and access control; and the infinite state spaces inherent in the underlying data. We address them in stages. First, we develop a symbolic representation of GSM programs, which makes them amenable to model checking. We then extend GSM to multi-agent systems and map it into a variant of artifact-centric multi-agent systems (AC-MAS), a paradigm based on interpreted systems. This allows us to reason about the knowledge the agents have about the artifact system. Lastly, we investigate predicate abstraction as a key technique to overcome the difficulty of verifying infinite state spaces. We present a technique that lifts 3-valued abstraction to epistemic logic and makes GSM programs amenable to model checking against specifications written in a quantified version of temporal-epistemic logic. The theory serves as a basis for developing a symbolic model checker that implements SMT-based, 3-valued abstraction for GSM-based multi-agent systems. The feasibility of the implementation is demonstrated by verifying GSM programs for concrete applications from the service community.

Abstract:
The use of mobile Internet has reached the transport industry. Internet will be used to transport important and security-critical information from and to vehicles. Using Internet in this context raises a severe problem. Only 6% of the world is covered by GSM, the primary Internet bearer for mobile usage. The subject of this thesis is to explore suitable backups in order to provide the user with global coverage for important information exchange. The messages to send and receive are small in size, often less than 100 bytes. The time factor of the transmission is important, an alert message often has to be passed within minutes to be of any use. These factors together with the global coverage leave us with only one suitable solution, a satellite data communication system. The first part of this thesis contains an investigation of the satellite communication market. Two different systems, Inmarsat-C and ORBCOMM, are chosen for further study and evaluation. One Inmarsat-C unit and two ORBCOMM units are found suitable for the application. The last part of the thesis contains the evaluation, testing and system integration of these units. The conclusion is that ORBCOMM, although not yet fully developed, has the capabilities and performance necessary for use in a mobile environment such as a truck. The two different ORBCOMM units tested, Panasonic and Stellar, were found to have comparable qualities.

Abstract: The complexity of today's electronic systems creates demand for more quantity and less cost of components in a system, at the same time that the system must be made smaller. This dissertation presents the design and tests of a quadband GSM antenna, embedded into an existing automotive tracking module produced in Brazil. The antenna operates within the GSM 850/900/1800/1900 bands, with performance suitable for its use in the GSM system, being in conformance with TRP tests. The final product is approved by Brazil's regulatory agency ANATEL and by other countries' agencies. The antenna is a monopole with special bandings for resonance adjustment. The antenna matching is achieved with a shorted bent stub, non-trivial, optimized for a broadband matching over the occupied GSM spectrum
