Dabrowski, J. M. "A 12-month follow-up study evaluating group interventions for children with Tourette Syndrome." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2016. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/1517979/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis consists of three parts: a systematic literature review, an empirical paper and a critical appraisal. It aims to contribute to the evidence base for psychological interventions for Tourette Syndrome (TS). TS is a neurodevelopmental condition characterised by the presence of both motor and vocal tics. Tics typically first present in childhood and are associated with psychiatric co-morbidity, social and emotional difficulties, impaired school functioning and a diminished quality of life. The literature review explores the efficacy and effectiveness of currently available psychological interventions for TS. It reviews both traditional behavioural approaches as well as newer adaptations of existing treatment protocols. The empirical paper evaluates the long-term outcomes of two group treatments (Comprehensive Behavioural Intervention for Tics and psychoeducation) for children with TS. It assesses the effect of these treatments on tic severity, neuropsychological functioning, quality of life and school attendance. Finally, the critical appraisal reflects on the process of conducting the research study. Specifically, it comments on the unique advantages and disadvantages of joining a larger research project, further explores the strengths and limitations of the study’s methodology and finally reflects on the experience of working with children with a neurodevelopmental disorder.

Seth, Ernest L. "FASPEC, a program to determine group constants for up to 47 groups in a fast neutron spectrum." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 1985. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/45665.

Full text
Abstract:

In reactor core design, a gap exists between the manual calculation of few-group constants and the many-group calculation, by large computer programs. A method is needed by which group constants may be calculated easily and quickly. The FASPEC program is designed to reduce the amount of manual calculation and to complement the large program by reducing the number of times the large program must be run to achieve desired results.

The program calculates group constants from 940 microgroups, collapsing to any user-specified number of macrogroups up to 47. FASPEC is based on group-averaged flux calculations by a solution of the Infinite medium neutron transport equation. Flux contributions from inelastic scatter are included while those from neutron upâ scatter are not. The energy spectrum considered is from 10 MeV to 0.625 eV. Required input is the atomic number density of each isotope, the number of macrogroups desired and the upper and lower microgroup numbers of each macrogroup. Input is facilitated by prompting in each case. Cross section look-up tables were provided by the Very Improved Monte Carlo code (VIM) for a mid-range Infinite hexagonal lattice. Self-shielding effects are included indirectly. A brief user's guide is provided.

Group constants calculated and stored for either terminal display or printed output are group number, lowest energy of the group, macroscopic removal cross section, macroscopic absorption cross section, diffusion coefficient, flux, macroscopic fission cross section, v, the average number of neutrons emitted per fission, and vΣf.

Abstract:
Aiming at generating a 361-group library, this paper investigated neutron up-scattering effect in the 361-group Santamarina-Hfaiedh Energy Mesh (SHEM). Firstly, the Doppler Broadening Rejection Correction (DBRC) method is implemented to consider the neutron up-scattering effect in Monte Carlo (MC) method. Then the MC method is employed to prepare resonance integral table and scattering matrix for afterward calculation. Numerical results show that the neutron up-scattering affects kinf by ∼200 pcm at most for UO2 pin cell problems in the 361-group SHEM, while the fuel temperature coefficient (FTC) is also influenced by 12∼13%. It has also been found that both of the above two influences acts through scattering matrix rather than self-shielded absorption cross sections. In addition, the self-shielding effect of cladding is studied and it’s been found that it affects kinf by 30∼70 pcm.

We determined the associations between radiotherapy and follow-up obesity in patients with craniopharyngioma (CP). Eligibility criteria: The inclusion criteria were as follows: (1) Participants: Patients who were clinically diagnosed with craniopharyngioma; (2) Intervention/control: For the control group, patients have not received radiotherapy, and the patients of the intervention group received radiotherapy alone, or surgery combined radiotherapy, or radiotherapy combined adjuvant therapy; (3) Outcome: The outcome was postoperative BMI or postoperative obesity. We excluded studies with (1) in vitro or animal experiments; (2) not written in English; (3) conference abstracts, reviews, correspondence, and comments; (4) case reports that included less than 10 patients.

Abstract:
In this paper, we test whether promoting digital government tools increases the take-up of an important public health prevention service: cervical cancer screening. We implemented an at-scale field experiment in Uruguay, randomly encouraging women to make medical appointments with a digital application or reminding them to do it as usual at their local clinic. Using administrative records, we found that the digital application nearly doubled attendance of a screening appointment compared to reminders and tripled the rate compared to a pure control group (3.2 percentage point increase over a base of 1.9 percent). Survey data suggests that the impacts of the intervention were mostly mediated by reduced transaction costs. Our results highlight the potential of investing in digital government to improve the take-up of public services.

Full text
Abstract:
The EU-funded ‘Strengthening Land Governance System for Smallholder Farmers in Malawi’ project was implemented from 2015 to 2020 by a consortium made up of Oxfam in Malawi, LANDNET (until 2018) and CEPA, with technical support from DAI. The objective was to pilot, test and recommend for scale-up improved gender-sensitive land governance systems. This Effectiveness Review evaluates the success of this project to achieve the following focal outcomes: (1) By 2019, laws have been enacted that are relevant to the registration and titling of customary estates and are ready for implementation and (2) By 2020, women and men in two or more of the target Group Village Headpersons (GVHs) in Phalombe, Kasungu and Rumphi districts have secure land tenure with supporting land governance structures. Using a process tracing approach, achievement of these focal outcomes and the consortium's contribution were assessed. Find out more by reading the full report now.

Abstract:
The Covid-19 pandemic has hit small- scale farmers, particularly women, very hard in Latin America. RIMISP – Latin American Center for Rural Development – has been conducting participatory research to mitigate the impact of Covid-19 on smallholder farmers in the department of Huila, in Colombia. The team has been working closely with the Secretariat of Agriculture and Mining of the Government of Huila to set up a Rural Dialogue Group to promote discussion on the project’s findings with local stakeholders. These discussions are helping to shape the local government’s agenda around these issues. The research team is also strengthening the capacity of small producer organisations to better access public programmes.
