Laptev, Andrey. "Who runs the place? : the evolving role of corporate centre in the strategy-making process : an empirical investigation of a major Russian multi-business corporation." Thesis, Cranfield University, 2011. http://dspace.lib.cranfield.ac.uk/handle/1826/6830.

Abstract:
This research was inspired by a particular business problem – the search for an optimal model of strategy-making process in Severstal, a major Russian metals and mining company going through a period of rapid growth and transformation. The research reports on the results of a longitudinal explorative case study based on two distinct empirical projects. The first project addressed strategy process nature, participants, roles of corporate centre, time perspective and impact of the external environment. Its results highlighted the importance of CEO leadership and personal traits, which became the principal focus of the second empirical project. The key empirical contribution of the research was definition of "leader-focused decentralisation" as a particular approach to strategy-making in a multi-business group. This approach combines decentralized, bottom-up, business units-led generation of strategic proposals and initiatives with a crucial role of a company leader as a deeply involved decision-maker, presiding over a small and lean corporate centre with minimal corporate rules and bureaucracy. In Severstal’s case, the "leader-focused decentralisation" approach to strategy was a good match to its volatile yet rewarding external environment. The suggested model can be seen as an empirically-derived step towards a theoretical synthesis of "activist" vs. "detached" views of corporate centre roles in relation to strategy process in multi-business firms. It exhibited some distinctive features which were not yet described in other contexts, including co-existence of strong entrepreneurial leadership and organisational decentralisation. From a practical standpoint, the research highlighted weaknesses and limitations of existing strategy-making model and offered a background for the discussion of ways to develop it in the future.

This research’s goal was to investigate the existing challenges of the succession process of a family corporate group, aiming to develop strategies regarding the succession process through scenarios simulation. For this purpose, the Rojo’s Model for Scenarios Simulation was applied in all its five levels: Delphi technique, competitive intelligence, scenarios simulation, strategy formulation and action plans elaboration. The research applied a qualitative approach, consisting of an exploratory study, characterized as a case study. In order to achieve the critical variables which were necessary to feed the model, the Delphi technique was applied through semi structured interviews with five experts. In the aftermath of the critical variables’ choice and the application of the competitive intelligence tools, two different scenarios were simulated. For the first scenario four strategies were formulated, and for the second scenario, other three strategies were elaborated. After that, distinct goals for each strategy were created. The achieved results support that scenarios simulation, Rojo’s Model in particular, represents a valuable tool to plan the succession process in family businesses, since it enables the organization to answer quickly and more effectively to changes which may occur during the pathway.

Churchill, David. "The Perceptions of Stakeholder Groups Regarding the Leader Identification Process as a Part of the Launch of a Leader Development Pool Strategy." Thesis, The George Washington University, 2015. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=3684951.

Abstract:

This study examined stakeholders’' perceptions of a leader identification process as a part of the launch of a leader development pool strategy within a large, U.S.-based corrections organization. Stakeholder perceptions included stakeholder expectations of, roles in, and contributions to the organization’'s leader identification strategy and process, which were aimed at addressing a sparse leadership bench.

This single, descriptive case study centered around a leader identification initiative involving leaders and emerging leaders who were nominated for or applied to an accelerated development program. Fourteen leaders participated in the study. Their average tenure with the organization was 14.3 years. This study examined stakeholder perceptions around three phases of the initiative: the kick-off and communication phase (Phase 1), the talent review phase (Phase 2), and the disposition and development phase (Phase 3).

The study’'s findings revealed agreement among stakeholder groups that (1) clearly defined roles and responsibilities were critical to building the leadership bench, (2) open and honest talent discussions were more important than the systems and processes designed to build leadership capacity, (3) the talent pool approach taken by the organization undermined true succession planning and targeted development, and (4) stakeholder expectations and involvement drove the need for planned changes in the leader identification and development strategy.

Abstract:
Corporate governance theories and the theory of the psychology of the small decision making group are used in order to understand the functioning mode of the public hospital supervisory board and specifically to test empirically the mediating relationship of the decision making process (Efforts norms, use of skills and knowledge and cognitive conflict) between the structure of the public hospital supervisory board (size, composition and diversity) and the performance of its roles (strategy ,control and service).320 questionnaires answered by the supervisory board members were collected. The aggregate of those individual responses generated 159 public hospital supervisory boards. The results of the hypothesis test of the model show that the supervisory board structure doesn’t influence the performance role of the supervisory board. Efforts norms influence positively the performance of its roles. Only the use of knowledge and skills, and efforts norms mediate the process relationship between the public hospital supervisory board structure and the performance of its roles

Adkins, Mark. "Using group support systems for strategic planning with the United States Air Force: The effects of a facilitator's using technology to structure verbal and electronic communication to increase quality output and improve group member satisfaction with the interaction process." Diss., The University of Arizona, 2000. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/284262.

Abstract:
Strategic planning is a critical part of establishing an organization's direction. Although strategic planning is utilized throughout the United States Air Force today in various forms, group sessions can become time-consuming without structured planning and a focus on group communication. Computer-supported strategic planning is one way of making effective use of technology to improve the strategic planning process. This research implements a group support system (GSS) as a communication tool to facilitate the strategic planning process. The researcher investigates effects of a facilitator's using technology to structure verbal and electronic communication, with the goal of increasing quality output and improving group member satisfaction. This project was completed at Mountain Home Air Force Base with the support of the 366th Wing. As predicted, a GSS facilitator's structuring verbal and electronic communication improved the quality of the strategic plan, reduced time to complete a strategic plan, and increased satisfaction with the strategic planning process. The results did not indicate increased commitment to implement the strategic plans developed by a group using GSS facilitation.

Kinuthia, Wanyee. "“Accumulation by Dispossession” by the Global Extractive Industry: The Case of Canada." Thèse, Université d'Ottawa / University of Ottawa, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/30170.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis draws on David Harvey’s concept of “accumulation by dispossession” and an international political economy (IPE) approach centred on the institutional arrangements and power structures that privilege certain actors and values, in order to critique current capitalist practices of primitive accumulation by the global corporate extractive industry. The thesis examines how accumulation by dispossession by the global extractive industry is facilitated by the “free entry” or “free mining” principle. It does so by focusing on Canada as a leader in the global extractive industry and the spread of this country’s mining laws to other countries – in other words, the transnationalisation of norms in the global extractive industry – so as to maintain a consistent and familiar operating environment for Canadian extractive companies. The transnationalisation of norms is further promoted by key international institutions such as the World Bank, which is also the world’s largest development lender and also plays a key role in shaping the regulations that govern natural resource extraction. The thesis briefly investigates some Canadian examples of resource extraction projects, in order to demonstrate the weaknesses of Canadian mining laws, particularly the lack of protection of landowners’ rights under the free entry system and the subsequent need for “free, prior and informed consent” (FPIC). The thesis also considers some of the challenges to the adoption and implementation of the right to FPIC. These challenges include embedded institutional structures like the free entry mining system, international political economy (IPE) as shaped by international institutions and powerful corporations, as well as concerns regarding ‘local’ power structures or the legitimacy of representatives of communities affected by extractive projects. The thesis concludes that in order for Canada to be truly recognized as a leader in the global extractive industry, it must establish legal norms domestically to ensure that Canadian mining companies and residents can be held accountable when there is evidence of environmental and/or human rights violations associated with the activities of Canadian mining companies abroad. The thesis also concludes that Canada needs to address underlying structural issues such as the free entry mining system and implement FPIC, in order to curb “accumulation by dispossession” by the extractive industry, both domestically and abroad.

Full text
Abstract:

Considerable evidence has revealed that particular lifestyle behaviours, such as engaging in regular physical activity, play a beneficial role in preventing and reducing the prevalence of chronic disease and illness in older adults (Singh, 2002; Taylor et al., 2004). With this in mind, the focus of this research was to investigate the effects of a novel group-oriented intervention (study 1) and determine if this novel approach could act as a mechanism for physical activity behavioural change in an older adult population (study 2).

Study One included a Randomised Control Trial (RCT) which compared a standard group intervention to an enhanced group intervention focusing on elements of group theory, with respect to effects on physical activity behaviour. Results revealed no significant differences between the two intervention groups however, many of the outcome measures indicated significant changes across time for both groups. Although the intervention was successful in increasing physical activity, there was no apparent effect shown by the theory-based approach aimed at enhancing group cohesion.

Thus, the purpose of Study Two was to provide a better understanding of the mechanisms by which psychological based theories of group development and group process affect the physical activity behaviours of older adults. Analyses revealed that the direct measures of attitude and perceived behavioural control acted as mediating mechanisms between selected concepts of group cohesion and physical activity intention however, subjective norm failed to mediate this relationship. The mediating relationship that was displayed provides insight into potential mechanisms by which group cohesion may affect behaviour.

Although the insights gained from study one and two have contributed to areas of health promotion and health and exercise psychology, further research considering the relationship between group theory research and physical activity behaviour is recommended.

Aktas, Hasan. "How do middle managers deal with uncertainty in the strategy process?" Doctoral thesis, 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/10071/19819.

Full text
Abstract:
Uncertainty is an unavoidable dimension of organizational life, and it is also challenging even for the most competent managers (Pich, Loch, & Meyer, 2002). This thesis examined middle managers’ uncertainty responses during the formulation and implementation of the strategy process in three studies. The first study was qualitative and intended to expose the sources of uncertainty, managerial responses, and variables, which are essential for middle managers to cope with uncertainty in the strategy process. Study 1, involving interviews with 22 middle managers in civilian and military organizations, resulted in six sources, including a new classification--International instability and disasters--and five different responses: Collaborative responses, Emotional responses, Cognitive responses, Value-based responses, and Bureaucratic responses. In the second study, we conducted a Multidimensional scaling technique (N=70) to create a taxonomy of perception of managerial uncertainty responses in order to understand the nature of uncertainty in any organization and to help to build new theories. Results indicated six clusters: Protection by Support, Protection by Structure, Protection by Scapegoats, Certainty of Change, Development by Debate, and Development by Change. In the third study, we examined the effects of individual responses to uncertainty and organizational factors on managerial responses using quantitative analysis (N=310). The results showed that organizational-level knowledge sharing has positive effects on managers’ desire of change. This study added a new source of uncertainty and five different managerial responses to uncertainty, and revealed that individual-level cognitive uncertainty and desire of change result in bureaucratic and collaborative responses. Additionally, we contend that managers respond to uncertainty variously, from suppressing to collaboration, either to protect themselves or to act towards a constructive change in the organizations.

It has been thirty years since Hunt (1972) developed the concept of Strategic Groups. Ever since then, there have been many researches conducted in this area. The definition of the Strategic Groups is: a group of enterprises that take the same of similar strategic dimensions. These enterprises either fall within the same industry or, based on the scope commitment and resource commitment, form a specific group. Many literatures indicate that the phenomenon of Strategic Groups does exist in many industries. As a result, new research directions were derived in the areas of the performance differences, mobility barriers and the competition behavior. However, the methodologies developed by the researchers vary in great deal in terms of analysis processes. Without clear analysis processes, it is not practical to apply the methodology to real cases. This research tries to address the processes and methodology of Strategic Groups analysis. First, it employs the interviews, business press and public documents, literature and questionnaires to collect strategic variables. Second, it selects the strategic dimensions out of the variables based on two methods: direct selection based on Industrial Organization Theory (IOT) or Resource Based View (RBV); indirect selection based on Principal Component Analysis or Factor Analysis. The existence of the Strategic Groups will be proven through the Cluster Analysis. However, certain key Strategic Dimensions will likely become the mobility barrier between Strategic Groups, which prevents the enterprises to move between Strategic Groups. It also creates the entry barrier for potential entrants. The pre-requisite for the Strategic Groups Analysis is that an enterprise has to exist in one. The analysis focuses are in the areas of performance difference, mobility barrier and competition behavior. The follow-up research will in turn emphasize on Multivariate Analysis on the related Strategic Dimensions and Strategic Groups. Researchers can also focus on the strategic position of the Strategic Groups in the industry and the competitive advantages brought by the execution of the strategies, which hopefully will indicate the directions for the lower performing groups to move towards the higher performing groups.

The pace of change today, due to globalization competition and knowledge economy, is both dizzying and dazzling. Companies hope to gain sustained competitive advantage by organizational change to overcome the change in domestics market. At the process of change, many companies are discovering a need to reinvent the human resource function, beyond its traditional operational and transactional role, to deal with the gap of regulation system, the diversity of managing method, the difference of organizational culture, and so on. The author conducts a case study of T Group with contextualism framework. Through deep interview and generally collection of all relative data to understand how to interact between the company with change stakeholders when the group integrates its own subsidiary company? And how to combine the functional department from different companies to build the global logistics service platform? In addition, this research verifies and analyzes the activities of various HR functional roles and interconnects to support the change agent at organizational change by multiple-role model (Ulrich, 2002). The findings are that, for multiple-role model, the contradictions could be solve by appropriate sequence and then set the indicator of multiple roles for human resource department to keep balance.

Nowadays, with the advance of globalization, new technology, and information transparency, business environments have become much more competitive. In order to respond with the uncertainty, lots of enterprises opt for constructing their own brand portfolios as strategy to sustain its growth. Therefore, our study tends to explore the brand portfolio developing process by strategic entrepreneurship theory. Our study is going to find out what kinds of driving forces give orporate impetus to build up brand portfolio, why corporate develop brand portfolio through brand extension or brand portfolio, and how corporate attain profits-making and growth-seeking through balancing opportunity-seeking activities and advantage-seeking activities. Via these research questions, our study could dig out how corporate cope with the uncertainty by brand portfolio development. After reviewing brand portfolio literatures, most of those are concerning the tactics of managing brand portfolio, and almost none of them concerns about the relationship between brand portfolio development process and competitive advantage establishment. Although there is study focus on this topic, the foci are based on established corporate but not entrepreneurial enterprises. Hence, our study adopts strategic entrepreneurship theory to make up for it. Our study adopts SPS method of case study to complete research process, and the case company is Gloria hotel group in Taiwan. After case analysis, our study comes out with three main findings as follows. First of all, key driving forces make corporate develop its brand portfolio are environmental factors and human capital inputs. Secondly, whether corporate choose brand extension or brand portfolio to expand its brand portfolio is also driven by corporate resources and capabilities, corporate strategy direction, and corporate culture. Thirdly, opportunity-seeking activities and advantage-seeking activities complementarily exist in the process of brand portfolio development, nevertheless, if there is only one activity dominant in the phase, corporate could not achieve balance of profits-making and growth-seeking targets, hence, the only way for corporate to balance is interacting opportunity-seeking activities and advantage-seeking activities at the same time continuously.

The policy making process for the “Separation of Prescribing and Dispensing” has continued for quite a long time, during the period the representatives of the interest groups (Medical Association and Pharmacists’ Association) were constantly in conflict, they manipulated tactics and shuttled back and forth between the government authorities and Legislative Yuan to carry out lobbying practice for their own benefit. The brief definition of the “Separation of Prescribing and Dispensing” is simply that “the doctors fill up the prescriptions and the pharmacists do the dispensations”. However our country carries on the medical system from the Japanese occupation era. In addition, the government did not pay serious attention to this issue, thus the doctors have always been taking care of everything, i.e. diagnosing, prescribing, and dispensing. But for the pharmacists, dispensing is explicitly the first priority. Therefore the major conflict during the medical procedure on the division of labor between the doctors and pharmacists is the ownership of dispensing power. The medical groups then interact with each other through the alteration of the legal right of dispensing. Therefore the right of dispensing is regarded as essential in the development of relevant articles about separation of prescribing and dispensing. This study applies “Game Theory” as the analysis framework. This study supposed that the two major interest groups, medical and pharmacists’ society, are under rational supposition and both recognized that, through the measure and estimation of the strategy, they can achieve optimum success or profit. From this study of the process of policy making in “Separation of prescribing and dispensing”, it can be seen clearly through the model supposition and balanced verification. The lobbying strategy that exercised by the interest groups on government organizations during the process of policy making, was proved to be lack of mutual trust between the interest groups, and thus produced constant resistance and have fall into a dilemma situation. Now they both have paid the resistant cost but did not get the optimal return. Therefore, this research has put forward some proposals as listed below: 1. Competent authorities should have clear manner in policy making and enhance communication. 2. Policy promotion is an indispensable part of policy making. 3. The establishment of consultative culture. 4. Make recommendations to the relevant interest groups about their lobbying strategy.

In the existing researches, the concept of the Brand Positioning is the perception of the product or brand ofconsumers. In recent years, some researches have different views that the business should define a competition framework for the reference before deciding the Brand Positioning and Enterprise Brand, which means a clear Target Market and CompetitiveProfile, and fine out thePoints of difference and Points of parity inthe positioning (marketing) of a brand for competitive advantage via brand or product. In other words, before the businesses do the marketing to the consumers for building the company image and brand, they should know their main competitorwell in the field. This concept is the same idea as the Brand Positioning in the Strategy Management. This paper applies the Strategic Group Analysis to establish theBrand Equity, and build a complete frameworkfor the structure of Brand Equity. We also have the case study of Mudanwan Villa in order to find out the important elements for Brand Building. We find two conclusions from the case-study.First,some successful hotels, like the Mudanwan Villa, alwaysfocus on the Brand Recognitionand Brand Association, and this is very important for Brand Buildingin the leisure industry. Second, we summarize the plan of StrategyBrandPositioning for the enterprise. In addition, we alsoobserve the importanceofexternal and internalconsistency in the Brand Management. The externalconsistency means the relationship between StrategyPositioningand Brand positioning. The internalconsistency means the relationship between the Brand Positioning, BrandElements, BrandRecognition and BrandAssociation.

Then, we specify the most important characteristics of transnational corporations from developing countries, we identify major incentives and strategies of their integration into the global competition, we also devote our attention to measurement of degree of their integration into the global economy and evaluate their main competitive advantages and disadvantages. In the analytical part of the work we use quantitative analysis in order to find the differences between transnational corporations from developing countries and their counterparts from developed countries in the transnationality index, diversification of industry and industrial sector in which these companies operate. The last part is focused on a case study of an Indian transnational conglomerate Tata Group. On this example we show the practical aspects of integration of transnational corporations from developing countries into the global economy.
