Abstract:
This research tried to reveal the group values of Marine retiree Depok, which has done by using symbolic convergence theory as the main theory. The aims of this research were to find and identify fantasy themes, rhetorical vision and group values of Marine retiree group in Depok. This study was based on a foundation of interpretative paradigm with qualitative research methods to find a fantasy theme that emerged in the group through the method of analysis of fantasy by Bormann. The results of the this study indicate the stories of Marine retiree in Depok are the bridge of experience of Marine retiree in the past with present time. Besides that, it is the formation of behavior in forms of values, culture and communication behavior of them. From the analysis theme shows that the group values of Marine retiree in Depok has manifested by universal's idealism value of Marines Semper Fidelis (loyalty), sacrifice, dedication, pride and self esteem. The group rhetorical visions are pride of the group, desire for being accepted and close to their group's identity.

Abstract:
This thesis is an exploration of five church communities, three of which are represented in depth. These communities have as a common narrative plot a period of significant decline followed by renewal and growth. The frameworks employed to understand these corporate narratives are an Organizational Culture, a Family Systems and an Organizational Psychological lens. The efficacy of each lens is assessed as to its ability to interpret each narrative coherently. Then the narratives are interpreted with all lenses used in parallel. The results of the thesis indicate that periods of decline were associated with certain dysfunctions, particularly Bion like basic assumptions, neurotic constellations or control cultures. Pastors and congregations are both idealized or demonized in the inner theatres of the community psyche. In periods of renewal, more rational and 'depressive' engagements with the environment of the church are indicative of strategic ministry that supplies both a more adequate holding environment and significant transitional objects that assist community maturation. Moreover, these maturational processes also reonnate with what is to be expected of a church community that exhibits the process attributes of an orthodox version of the Triune community.

Abstract:
Triggered by globalisation and the increasing media convergence enabled by digital communication technologies, fansubbing has become one of the most observable aspects of Chinese participatory culture, both domestically and internationally. Informed by concepts drawn from the science of complexity and drawing on social self-organisation theory (Fuchs 2002), this study adopts a systems perspective and the method of netnography (Kozinets 2010) to bring to light the dynamics of collective identity formation in The Last Fantasy (TLF) fansubbing group, one of the most influential fansubbing networks in China. In particular, this study aims to reveal how TLF’s fansubbers deploy digital technologies to facilitate their daily subtitling activities, build and maintain their relationships, and express a collective voice in relation to the specific media context in China. Findings from this study are used to evaluate the role played by amateur translation, as exemplified by fansubbing activities carried out by TLF’s fansubbers, in China’s participatory culture. It is hoped that this study will enrich our understanding of the phenomenon of amateur translation in an increasingly networked society.

Steenkamp, Elzette Lorna. "Identity, belonging and ecological crisis in South African speculative fiction." Thesis, Rhodes University, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10962/d1002262.

Full text
Abstract:
This study examines a range of South African speculative novels which situate their narratives in futuristic or ‘alternative’ milieus, exploring how these narratives not only address identity formation in a deeply divided and rapidly changing society, but also the ways in which human beings place themselves in relation to Nature and form notions of ‘ecological’ belonging. It offers close readings of these speculative narratives in order to investigate the ways in which they evince concerns which are rooted in the natural, social and political landscapes which inform them. Specific attention is paid to the texts’ treatment of the intertwined issues of identity, belonging and ecological crisis. This dissertation draws on the fields of Ecocriticism, Postcolonial Studies and Science Fiction Studies, and assumes a culturally specific approach to primary texts while investigating possible cross-cultural commonalities between Afrikaans and English speculative narratives, as well as the cross-fertilisation of global SF/speculative features. It is suggested that South African speculative fiction presents a socio-historically situated, rhizomatic approach to ecology – one that is attuned to the tension between humanistic- and ecological concerns.

Abstract:
In a society where the virtual is constantly present in our everyday life, this research is dealingwith the effect of its use on one’s psyche. The individual defense mechanisms which can beidentified in the use of the social networks, e.g., Facebook, as well as the groups’organizations due to one’s posts, are questioned. Three hypotheses are settled. First, there isno specific personality structure identified within the social network’s users. Second, beingall-powerful on his social network’s profile, the individual can get closer to an ideal egothanks to mirror relationships. This process enables the individual to fill his narcissisticweaknesses. Third, these mirror relationships will be at the base of the group movement andwill contribute to the virtual crowd’s creation. We analyze the semi-structured interviews, theRorschach and the Facebook profiles (analysis done by the software WeftQDA) of 14individuals. Their conscious visions are confronted to their unconscious use of the socialnetwork. The results put into relief a mechanism of a strong mirror resonance during the setupof the virtual crowd. Then, the resonance of phantasms organizes this web which takesplace in the individual’s unconscious as an internal group. The individual, pushed by aperverse phantasm, shows up idealized parts of himself on his Facebook profile. These areshared with the members of his virtual crowd, built by himself. The person is in this way theleader. Their voyeurism enables them to share common ideals and hence, unifies the virtualcrowd. The absence of inhibition and generation gap causes euphoria in the group. This is thesign of a group Illusion. In their willingness to maintain it, the individuals avoid the group’spsychic separation

Abstract: Student who gets involved with their learning process learns better. Starting from this premise, the aim of this study was to develop, implement and evaluate a new teaching method in the disciplines of cell biology, the RPG-based class. The RPG (role-playing game) is a cooperative game where the players have common goals and must work together actively to achieve the goals. Each student builds his own knowledge while participating in the classroom guided by the teacher. Creating and implementing these classes was an exciting challenge for teachers, and teacher training using this approach was also a focus of this study. The methodology included: theoretical research on the topics of cellular biology (a cellular process such as ATP synthesis, for example) and the subsequent creation of the class in the form of an RPG adventure, testing the created classes, and applying the material to students of higher education in three different universities. The students attended either an RPG-based class (GRPG) or a lecture (GC) on specific cellular biology topics. Pre- and post-class questionnaires, conceptual maps, regular exam scores and on an unannounced test one year later (medium-term retention) were compared to assess student attitudes and learning in the two groups. The evaluation also consisted of testimonials from students, interviews with participating teachers, and observations of students during class. GC scored better than GRPG in 1 of 20 regular exam questions, but the score for this one question was very low in both groups. In the medium-term evaluation the RPG group showed higher scores on 2 of 22 questions and left fewer questions unanswered. Most students who participated in the GRPG considered that this is a good teaching/learning method, that it should be used as a complementary tool to lecture, and felt more confident and encouraged to read more about the class topics. The analysis of concept maps constructed by students before and after school, shows that new concepts were incorporated into the web of knowledge of students, and a significant improvement in the concepts' connections were established as assessed by concept maps. Teachers and students who acted as teachers in the RPG-based classes considered this a good teaching/learning tool, and were willing to apply this tool in their own classrooms. Our results showed that RPGs is quantitatively as good as formal lectures, but can be an educational tool that gives students the chance to learn actively and potentially lead to a better retention of the acquired knowledge

Abstract:
Researchers are interested in exploring the use of fantasy design in educational games to promote learning. This chapter first reviewed the literature on fantasy designs and relevant principles along with the studies examining the use of fantasy designs to enhance learning. An experiment was then conducted, in which two sets of fantasy designs were implemented in a serious game, to examine the effect of different types of fantasy (portrayal fantasy vs creative fantasy designs) on learning and game engagement. The results using multiple regressions showed that portrayal fantasy design was more effective both for enhancing learning and engagement. Students who used portrayal fantasy models showed better improvement in their content knowledge and scored better on game engagement. Visualization analysis showed the portrayal fantasy group spent more time in using the tool containing all fantasy designs than the creative group. Findings and future research directions are discussed.

Abstract:
Chapter 3 deals with the group’s opera productions between 1957 and 1963, which, in hindsight, proved to be artistically their best years. At the time, the idea of a colored opera group that produced Verdi operas continued to mesmerize Cape Town’s white audiences and situated the group in the center of Cape Town’s Western art and music activities. Eoan was, indeed, the first non-European group in South Africa to formally and consistently produce opera on a semiprofessional level. A sense of excitement and wonder is palpable throughout this period, not only in documentation on the reception of the group, but also in the many artifacts in the Eoan Group Archive that document the internal operations of the group.

Abstract:
This chapter first contrasts two professional sites in which practice communities and aesthetic communities emerge: a giant art fair called Art Beijing, and a private meeting between a small group of young artists and a curator. It next examines the studios and cafés (kafeiguan or jiuba) in which artists and designers socialize, before showing how communities expand spatiotemporally through objects and media. Throughout, the chapter considers fantasies of sociality provoked by anxieties about anomie: memories of the community around Yuanmingyuan that was torn down during the reconstruction of the city; attempts to build a community of artists and designers turned kung fu (gong fu) practitioners; and a fantasy of a public art library, imagined by a young photographer, which never came to be.

Abstract:
"Borderline Personality Disorder is arguably the most distressing disorder amongst the DSM diagnoses for all involved. Although psychiatric labelling can be validating it is often stigmatising. Due to the nature of BPD, people living with the disorder (PBPD) tend to be marginalized and discriminated against. A quick and random review of the World Wide Web (including a selection of popular social media platforms) reveals a common linguistic theme in describing BPD. PBPD are ‘toxic’, ‘difficult’ and ‘manipulative. Other labels, more diagnostically - oriented see PBPD as the ‘PDs’ or ‘the borderlines’. These also carry negative connotations of the inner and outer groups - ‘us’ vs ‘them’. Given the nature of the labels, recovery for PBPD is often dubious. One might think - ‘I am a monster anyway’, a classic example of cognitive dissonance. The language used in clinical practice as well as out of it is a powerful weapon. Some might poetically describe BPD as a lethal cocktail of blended psychopathologies with the ingredients including chronic suicidality, abandonment and intermittent lucidity to name a few. Of note, externalising such pathologies in an adaptive way is almost a fantasy for the therapy team. A more user friendly descriptive diagnosis is ‘difficulty in emotion regulation’. However, probably the most accurate ‘label’ of BPD for PBPD is ‘living in acute pain’. The current climate and the uncertainty surrounded the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has meant a significantly increased risk not only in symptoms remission but also in the increase in cyber-bullying and suicidality rate. The pandemic has also put a halt to the Participant and Public Involvement in the evidence based practice. Linguistic shift in reducing stigma is essential and of immediate need."
