Full text
Abstract:
Grounded theory is viewed as an exceptional example of a qualitative research methodology that was developed in the modernist phase of qualitative research. The methodology emphasizes inductive reasoning, and its foundations rest with symbolic interactionism and pragmatist philosophy. Grounded theory has been described as one of the more systematic approaches to qualitative research. Music therapists have used grounded theory to investigate many aspects of the applications of music therapy in healthcare. This chapter provides information about the history and context for the development of grounded theory, including key pioneers in the approach. Key strategies for conducting grounded theory research are discussed. Music therapy studies that have used grounded theory method are presented.

Abstract:
We outline a phenomenological method for a science of psychopathology. Method is conceived as the mode of experiencing an object which can deliver the best direct evidence of the object available. Hence a main aim of our chapter is to sketch a method for the science of psychopathology that can establish this best evidence for claims about abnormal mental realities. The best source of evidentially grounded claims regarding psychopathological experiences is located in the clinical interview and dialogue. The method of hermeneutics adds needed detail. Our concept of hermeneutics goes back to Dilthey and up to Ricoeur. The need for the psychiatrist to “re-live” or “re-experience” of the patient’s experiences is stressed. We relate this to the phenomenological concept of quasi-experience or imaginative experience. Finally we discuss how conceptual generalization and the formation of scientific categories can follow from this phenomenological procedure.

Gatkowska, Izabela. Diagnosing Dysarthria in Adults: A New Speech Assessment Method for Polish, English, and Spanish. Æ Academic, 2019. http://dx.doi.org/10.52769/bl3.0019.

Full text
Abstract:
Izabela Gatkowska proposes a new SPEECH ASSESSMENT METHOD (SAM), grounded in her clinical experience with dysarthria, awareness of diagnostically important features, and the practical need to confine logopedic examination to tasks diagnostically most important and maximally tolerable by the patient. When diligently applied, the new SAM allows the diagnostician to identify overlapping dysarthric symptoms in greater detail and, when repeated, analyze their dynamics over time. The point of departure for the current study is an analysis of the speech impairments observed in Polish adult neurological patients. Rooted in language, developed and tested in a neurological clinic, this original method of diagnosing dysarthric speech disorders shall be applicable for linguists, psychologists, and clinicians who work with patients speaking Polish, English, or Spanish. Dysarthria, after all, is a neurodegeneratively-conditioned speech disorder whose diagnosis is independent of the patient’s mother tongue.

Villegas, Abelardo. The Problem of Truth (1960). Translated by Carlos Alberto Sánchez. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190601294.003.0019.

Full text
Abstract:
This text is the conclusion to Abelardo Villegas’s seminal work, La filosofía de lo mexicano, which does not dismiss the philosophy of lo mexicano outright. His conflict is with the method underscoring that philosophical project: historicism. Historicism, or the view that truth is dependent on history, offers Mexican philosophers an opportunity to articulate their philosophies as historical beings, thus contributing historical difference to the philosophical conversation. However, historicists face a fundamental “aporia,” as their project calls for defining an essentially historical being (the Mexican) using ahistorical categories (e.g. solitude, accidentality, melancholy, etc.). Thus, Villegas chastises Emilio Uranga for his “essentialism,” for looking for essences while grounding his approach in history. Villegas concludes that a philosophy of lo mexicano is possible—not one grounded on the uniqueness of the Mexican experience, but one that grounds the possibility of communicating that uniqueness to other peoples and other times.

Abstract:
This chapter presents grounded design as a suggestion for a praxeological turn in the field of computing. It argues that, given the high societal relevance of computing to all aspects of life, the academic field of (applied) computer science needs to develop its epistemological paradigm and research methods accordingly. Computer science arguably needs to define itself as a sociotechnical discipline that contributes to the solution of social problems in context. The grounded-design position is that a design-oriented discipline of practice-based computing is needed, one where methods and techniques can deal with the context specificity of local knowledge and appropriation of information and communications technology more seriously. This chapter presents an approach that outlines such practice-based computing by building on situated design knowledge and dealing with the interplay of the social and the technical.

Wilton, Janis. Oral History in Universities: From Margins to Mainstream. Edited by Donald A. Ritchie. Oxford University Press, 2012. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780195339550.013.0032.

Full text
Abstract:
This article chronicles the journey of oral histories from margins to the mainstream. Until the late 1970s oral history was something that happened only outside universities. When pursued within universities, it was considered a fairly unsophisticated method for research projects. The skepticism—though now both more refined and more filtered—and the commonsense view can still be found within universities. However, the growth in university oral history courses, research projects, archives and other activities, their diversity and innovative nature, and the burgeoning literature on the teaching of oral history in tertiary institutions all suggest that oral history has moved from the margins to the mainstream, and that it is recognized as grounded in complex and sophisticated theories and methods. This article aims, however, to provide an overview of key achievements, issues, strategies, and challenges, and to provoke thinking about ongoing and future issues, strategies, and concerns.

Carlin, Nathan. Pastoral Aesthetics. Oxford University Press, 2019. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190270148.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
It is often said that bioethics as a field began in theology during the 1960s but that it became secular during subsequent decades, yielding to other disciplines and professions such as philosophy and law, because it was felt that a neutral language was needed to provide a common ground for guiding clinical practice and research protocols. This common ground was provided by Tom Beauchamp and James Childress in their The Principles of Biomedical Ethics—an approach that became known as principlist bioethics. Pastoral Aesthetics recovers a role for religion in bioethics by providing a new perspective rooted in pastoral theology. Nathan Carlin argues that pastoral theologians can enrich moral imagination in bioethics by cultivating an aesthetic sensibility that is theologically-informed, psychologically-sophisticated, therapeutically-oriented, and experientially-grounded. To achieve these ends, Carlin employs Paul Tillich’s method of correlation by positioning four principles of bioethics with four images of pastoral care. In so doing, he draws on a range of sources, including painting, fiction, memoir, poetry, journalism, cultural studies, clinical journals, classic cases in bioethics, and original pastoral care conversations. The result is a form of interdisciplinary inquiry that will be of special interest to bioethicists, theologians, and chaplains.

Full text
Abstract:
One of the core challenges of grounded normative theory is to deploy a methodology for theorizing that guides us to seek insight from lived experience even though our knowledge of that experience can be only partial, incomplete, even flawed. Grounded normative theory is a broad methodological approach that requires specific methods for developing the empirical basis appropriate to each normative inquiry. Chapter 5 describes the specific methods I used to develop the theory of just responsibility. It provides an argument for drawing on the strategic initiatives of human rights activists and describes the research–activist partnership from which the normative theory presented here derives.
