Abstract:
In 1927, Claude Flight proposed that the linocut, a comparatively new art form, could create a new relationship between the modern public and modern art. It was, he theorised, ideally suited for the mass market as it was relatively small, it was relatively cheap, and its directness accorded with the spirit of the modern age. Many works by Flight and other artists of the Grosvenor School, at which Flight taught from 1926 to 1930, democratically aligned artist, subject, and viewer and focused on scenes of contemporary public life, from manual labour to recreational sports, mass spectator events to commuter experience. This article investigates the ambiguous middlebrow position of the Grosvenor School linocuts, which never achieved the widespread popularity that Flight anticipated or cultivated the broad, aspirational audience he envisioned for these works. It poses that Flight's utopian vision for mass modernism was frustrated by his limited comprehension of the ‘average man’ his linocuts sought to address, and the absence of suitable critical and commercial apparatus to enable the public to meet him on the terms he desired.

Abstract:
This essay discusses the colour linocuts of the Melbourne-born artist and illustrator Ethel Spowers. Although Spowers was a key figure in modern art and design in Australia during the 1920s and 1930s, to date her linocuts have received little critical attention and are appraised only briefly and collectively as part and parcel of the Grosvenor School of Modern Art in London, where she studied for several months under the guidance of Iain Macnab and Claude Flight. This essay argues that her modernism provides an important contrast and supplement to accounts of modern everyday life offered by her British and European colleagues at the School, and canonical British and Anglo-American modernism more generally. Rejecting a view of modern life defined in terms of homogenisation, social alienation and adult experience, I discuss how Spowers's rhythmic compositions express choreographies of community and positive affect, and focus on the experience of children.

Abstract:
In the theory and practice of teaching primary school students great deal of attention is paid to the issue of training effectiveness and, in particular, to the issue of cognitive activity’s activation in students. The relevance of this topic can be explained by the fact that introduction of the Federal State Educational Standards of primary general education requires the teacher to know the new forms and methods of educational process organization, which could be feasible and effective in the modern conditions and interesting for children. In this article the author offers an efficient way of application of art-figurative means during the lessons in primary school. Art is the incentive of cognitive activity activation in children. Emotions give personal sense to received knowledge. The author considers the following forms of work with students: modeling of lessons, development of the technological card of a lesson, business game, and master classes. Students master methodical receptions: “transformation” into natural object, ordering of artistic images, and transformation of one art sample into another. The lessons developed by students were approved in practice at elementary school. Teachers noted positive influence of art means on activation of cognitive activity of elementary school pupils.

Abstract:
This qualitative study uses narrative inquiry (Connelly & Clandinin, 1988, 1990, 2001) and self-study to investigate ways to further understand and facilitate the integration of holistic philosophies of education with media literacy pedagogies. As founder and director of the Youth Media Literacy Project and a self-titled Imagitator (one who agitates imagination), I have spent over 10 years teaching media literacy in various high schools, universities, and community centres across North America. This study will focus on my own personal practical knowledge (Connelly & Clandinin, 1982) as a culture jammer, educator and cancer survivor to illustrate my original vision of a ‘holistic media literacy pedagogy’. This research reflects on the emergence and impact of holistic media literacy in my personal and professional life and also draws from relevant interdisciplinary literature to challenge and synthesize current insights and theories of media literacy, holistic education and culture jamming.

Celestial Tapestry places mathematics within a vibrant cultural and historical context, highlighting links to the visual arts and design, and broader areas of artistic creativity. Threads are woven together telling of surprising influences that have passed between the arts and mathematics. The story involves many intriguing characters: Gaston Julia, who laid the foundations for fractals and computer art while recovering in hospital after suffering serious injury in the First World War; Charles Howard, Hinton who was imprisoned for bigamy but whose books had a huge influence on twentieth-century art; Michael Scott, the Scottish necromancer who was the dedicatee of Fibonacci’s Book of Calculation, the most important medieval book of mathematics; Richard of Wallingford, the pioneer clockmaker who suffered from leprosy and who never recovered from a lightning strike on his bedchamber; Alicia Stott Boole, the Victorian housewife who amazed mathematicians with her intuition for higher-dimensional space. The book includes more than 200 colour illustrations, puzzles to engage the reader, and many remarkable tales: the secret message in Hans Holbein’s The Ambassadors; the link between Viking runes, a Milanese banking dynasty, and modern sculpture; the connection between astrology, religion, and the Apocalypse; binary numbers and the I Ching. It also explains topics on the school mathematics curriculum: algorithms; arithmetic progressions; combinations and permutations; number sequences; the axiomatic method; geometrical proof; tessellations and polyhedra, as well as many essential topics for arts and humanities students: single-point perspective; fractals; computer art; the golden section; the higher-dimensional inspiration behind modern art.

Abstract:
In the modern world, a person’s ability to read, perceive, analyze, interpret, transmit, use information, and express one’s own attitude becomes important. The formation of reading competence of junior schoolchildren is determined by one of the tasks of studying the language and literature education in primary school. Reading competence is considered as a multifaceted personal education, which characterizes the set of knowledge, skills, abilities, values of the reader, which allow to successfully interact with the text / work, to search for the necessary information. Reading skills are a component of reading competence. The purpose of the study is to theoretically analyze and highlight the practical aspects of the formation of reading skills of primary school students with the help of graphic organizers of reading. Research methods such as analysis of scientific sources, systematization and generalization of data to identify the state of the problem are used. According to the defined tasks of the research, the main groups of reading skills of junior schoolchildren that meet the requirements of the State Standard of Primary Education have been identified: possession of a fullfledged reading skill; perception and understanding of the actual content of read works of art, texts; analysis and interpretation of read works; expression of own feelings, attitude to the read work; creative work, experimentation with the work; independent choice of works for reading. It is established that in order to develop reading skills of junior students it is advisable to use cognitive visualization tools that help to present visual models, teach rational processing, analysis of information and its graphical representation, activate the thinking processes of students. Graphic organizers are a type of cognitive graphics, the essence of which is the development of combined cognitive models of knowledge representation, combining symbolic and graphic ways of presenting educational material. Graphic reading organizers are understood as ways of presenting information for its generalization, systematization, classification, analysis of a work of art / media text in graphical form on paper or monitor. It is determined that graphic organizers of reading stimulate, organize and direct the thinking process, help to evaluate and correct the process of own cognitive activity, allow to understand the theme, main idea, characters of the work, determine the sequence of events, genre of work, help express one’s attitude. Appropriate types of graphic organizers (maps, diagrams, tables, diagrams) for the development of reading skills related to the perception and understanding of what is read (tables «I know – I want to know – Learned / Learned», «I know – I do not know», the scheme «What? – Where? – When? – Who? – Why?», «Attitudes of the characters», «Basic information about the work», schemes «Changes», «Actions of the characters»), expression of their own attitudes, thoughts, emotions and feelings about what is read (tables «My thoughts», «My questions», «Emotions»).

Abstract:
When faced with a decision to acquire and install a networking lab for business students, the question looms as to the purpose and the learning objectives for such a lab. In addition, the technology is expensive and the effort required to set up the lab, define its pedagogical focus and prepare experiments that help achieve this focus can be a daunting task. However, modern business colleges must incorporate state of the art networking technologies into its curriculum and provide an opportunity for students to learn by doing. This paper presents the results of the creation of a networking lab including its physical setup, discusses the obstacles faced during its implementation and how they were overcome, and provides a roadmap for educators interested in adding a similar lab to their school. (Funding for the lab was generously provided by a group of alumni with a match from their employer for the specific purpose of creating a networking laboratory.) The lab is intended for business students majoring in Information Systems who must be prepared to make decisions concerning the acquisition and implementation of networking.
