Abstract:
Sir Samuel Walker Griffith (1845–1920) is distinguished as the first Australian translator of Italy’s ‘Supreme Poet’, Dante Alighieri (1265–1321). This article considers how Griffith’s entanglement with Dante casts light on the Queensland–Italian connection. First, it sketches the concept of entangled history and entanglement, an evolving transcultural historiographic approach. Second, it canvasses how entangled history can assist in appraising implications of Griffith’s recently contested legacy as Premier of Queensland. Third, it outlines points of convergence between Griffith and Dante, beginning with Griffith’s translation of Dante’s Divine Comedy. Fourth, it extends this lens on convergence to Griffith’s and Dante’s common dimensions that include Griffith’s Italophilia, and the experience of divisive, factional and fractious politics. Fifth, it narrows to consider the limited justice of contrapasso in Dante’s treatment of crime and punishment. Finally, it traverses codified justice that features in Griffith’s entanglement with Dante and the Italian Penal Code – Griffith translated Dante when drafting Queensland’s ground-breaking Criminal Code and when referencing the Italian Penal Code as a source therein. This article proposes that Griffith’s translational project was not simply a vehicle for sharpening his Italian or pursuing fame or status per se, but was a lifelong creative pursuit that offered imaginative, intellectual applications resonating with his public service values. Whatever impelled Griffith’s translations, his appreciation of Dante clearly instances Queensland–Italian interconnectedness.

Abstract:
This paper presents views of award-winning inventor Saul Griffith on creating products that are environmental friendly. Griffith presents controlling carbon emissions as not so much a moral imperative, but as an active design choice. His start-up company, Makani Power, is working to tap the energy of strong, steady winds a half mile above the ground through use of high-tech kites. Another of Griffith’s projects, the web site Wattzon, was established to enable individuals to estimate their personal power consumption. According to Griffith, objects designed to endure over decades need to be not only functional, but also beautiful. Some of the conceptual framework that Griffith lays out as heirloom design is as much provocation as proposal. It is the increase in quality that Griffith said differentiates his concept of an heirloom-based economy from the idea that constraining carbon emissions is going to require undue sacrifice or even enforced poverty.

Abstract:
The Asian genus Glyptopetalum Thwaites (1856: 267) comprises 35 species (Savinov 2014) of which 5 species are occurring in India (Ramamurthy 2000). Glyptopetalum griffithii Prain (1891: 209) was described on the basis of a single gathering obtained by Griffith from the Mishmi hills, Arunachal Pradesh, India. Later, Kanjilal et al. (1936: 266) recognized and treated this species based on a collection by Kanjilal from Pashighat in Arunachal Pradesh. Eventually Ramamurthy (2000: 112) also accepted the species in his treatment of the family Celastraceae for the Flora of India. Chakrabarty & Gangopadhyay (1990: 129) as well as Savinov (2014: 187) erroneously considered G. griffithii a name based on Euonymus griffithii Kurz (1870: 73). However, the latter was proposed as a new name for Hippocratea angulata Griffith (1854: 473), due to the existence of Euonymus angulata Wight (1846: t. 1053), whereas G. griffithii was originally described as species new to science.

Abstract:
This essay interrogates Sergei Eisenstein's critique of D. W. Griffith's montage aesthetic, arguing that, in Griffith's Orphans of the Storm, historical perspective is constituted in opposition to (rather than as a result of) the forward surge of the film's montage. Griffith represents historical consciousness through the narrative figure of trembling, harking back to Charles Dickens's A Tale of Two Cities, another text in which the movements of history are registered on the bodies of witnesses who struggle to keep their composure. Both Griffith and Dickens construct a social world driven to extremes by competing ideological forces and imagine historical subjects whose reactions to emergency—witnessing and trembling—hold them apart from it. Ultimately, these gestures of response suggest a tendency in melodramatic texts to construct a normative subjectivity that resists the antithetical underpinnings of melodrama itself.

Abstract:
In this paper, for the first time, mathematically strictly, models of Griffiths cracks and cracks of a new type are constructed simultaneously. Accurate models are constructed as a result of the convergence of the ends of two semi-infinite deformable stamps located on a deformable multilayer base. The mechanism of destruction of the medium by cracks of a new type is radically different from the mechanism of destruction of the medium by Griffiths cracks, and has so far been poorly studied. Griffiths formed his cracks with a smooth border as a result of compression from the sides of an elliptical cavity in the plate. Cracks of a new type have a piecewise smooth border, resulting from the replacement of an ellipse with a rectangle compressed from the sides. The construction of models in the work is based precisely on these descriptions of the origin of cracks formed by the ends of approaching deformable stamps. When creating models, the results of previously performed studies on the construction of exact solutions to a number of integral equations of contact problems, published in this journal, are used. The paper found that the destruction of the medium, in the case of cracks of a new type, occurs earlier than in the case of Griffith cracks, which, according to the authors, explains the reason for the destruction of Griffith cracks in the experiment earlier than the theory predicts. Griffiths explained this by the presence of microcracks on the border of the main crack. The authors tend to believe that the cause is the transformation of one type of crack into another, under certain conditions. The results obtained make it possible to compare and quantify the behavior of the medium in the presence of both one and another type of cracks. It is applicable both for the study of mutual transitions of Griffith cracks and cracks of a new type, and for the construction of models of adhesion of wetted nanoparticles.

Abstract:
Despite exerting a considerable influence over contemporary constitutional thought, there is a very real sense in which the political constitutionalism of JAG Griffith has been neglected. This paper seeks a genuine engagement with Griffith's work and, in doing so, offers a reconstruction and partial defence of Griffith's political constitutionalism. The article characterises Griffith's political constitutionalism as ‘agonistic’– that is to say, issuing from a belief in the inescapably conflictual nature of human association. Central to this agonistic political constitutionalism is the relationship between conflict and politics – or what might be termed the political management of conflict. This paper argues that Griffith's account of conflict, although central to his constitutional thought, is underdeveloped, not least in its failure to elucidate precisely what is to be understood by ‘politics’. It is thus that the paper draws on the work of Michael Oakeshott to propose an understanding of politics as the pursuit of intimations that, it is argued, can help draw out an important blend of conflict, continuity and contingency in Griffith's political constitutionalism.

Abstract:
Though our knowledge of the transitional era has increased substantially over the last few decades, incorporating studies of pivotal institutions, exhibition and reception contexts, and forces of regulation and circulation, formal analysis of the period’s films is still indebted to the singular example of D.W. Griffith, identified as the instigator of the “narrator system” in Tom Gunning’s influential book, D.W. Griffith and the Origins of the American Narrative Film. But the historical accident that resulted in Griffith’s films surviving when those of his contemporaries largely disappeared has defined most historians’ approach to charting a history of narrational changes during the pivotal years of 1908-1913. Rather than challenge Griffith’s importance as an enterprising and influential filmmaker, historians require the means to better contextualize Griffith’s contributions, rewriting in the process a formal history that can incorporate authorship without being defined by it as a governing principle. To this end, this essay will use the opportunity provided by the ongoing restoration and distribution of Thanhouser films from 1910-1913 to investigate how the “unauthored text” from this period can aid in our endeavours to expand the contours of the historiography of the transitional era.

Abstract:
The Griffith equation for brittle cracking has three problems. First, it applies to an infinite sheet whereas a laboratory test sample is typically near 100 × 100 mm. Second, it describes a central crack instead of the more dangerous and easily observable edge crack. Third, the theory assumes a uniform stress field, instead of tensile force application used in the laboratory. The purpose of this paper is to avoid these difficulties by employing Gregory's solution in calculating the crack behaviour of PMMA (Poly Methyl Meth Acrylate) discs, pin loaded in tension. Our calculations showed that axial disc loading gave nominal strengths comparable with Griffith theory, but the force went to zero as the crack fully crossed the disc, fitting experimental results. Off-axis loading was more interesting because the predicted strength was lower than in axial testing, but also gave unexpected behaviour at short crack lengths, where nominal strength did not rise indefinitely but dropped as crack length went below D/10, quite different from Griffith, where strength rose continuously as cracks were shortened. Such off-axis loading leads to a size effect in which larger discs are weaker, reminiscent of the fine fibre strengthening phenomenon reported in Griffith's early paper (Griffith 1921 Phil. Trans. R. Soc. Lond. A 221 , 163–198. ( doi:10.1098/rsta.1921.0006 )). Abstract:
In the first two decades of the twentieth century, American cinema played a major role in transforming what George Fredrickson has called “the black image in the white mind.” This transformation began with the invention of cinema and climaxed withThe Birth of a Nation, a film whose appeal derived not from its content, but rather from D. W. Griffith's ability to seize on this content to provoke an intense emotional response in his viewers. This essay begins by examining some of the first images of African Americans captured on camera. It then turns to Griffith's innovations in the one- and two-reelers he made at the Biograph Company. Finally, and on the occasion of the film's hundredth anniversary, the essay provides a detailed analysis of how Griffith achieved his effect inThe Birth of a Nation. What the essay shows, ultimately, is that whereas the earliest depictions of African Americans relied on audience foreknowledge, the arrival of American narrative cinema led Griffith to create new kinds of black characters. Griffith's use of the close-up, the point of view, the shot/reverse-shot pattern, and parallel editing enabled him to convince his audiences of a “black menace” that threatened white America.

ABSTRACT: This essay reconstructs and analyzes the context of production for D. W. Griffith's The Idol Dancer (1920) and The Love Flower (1920), both filmed in South Florida shortly after Griffith Studios relocated from Hollywood to Mamaroneck, New York. By reconstructing production processes, this essay demonstrates that Griffith's ambitions exceeded his abilities. He was often indecisive when choosing filming locations, as exemplified by his capricious relationship with South Florida. The essay further argues that Griffith's overzealous ambition and geographical ambivalence correlates with his attempt to function independently when the industry shifted to a more producer-centered model post–World War I.

Abstract:
Griffith Observatory’s role in the movies is discussed. It has been in so many movies, it should have a star on Hollywood Boulevard. The Observatory's first film credit, The Phantom Empire, was shot even before the observatory opened to the public in May, 1935. As a film star, Griffith Observatory fulfilled a variety of predictable and often peripheral functions, but in two movies, Rebel without a Cause and La La Land, the observatory was key to the theme. Griffith Observatory's relationship with Hollywood is, however, deeper than all of these on-screen close-ups. At times, Griffith Observatory influenced Hollywood, and Hollywood technology, production standards, and storytelling priorities have all, over more than eight decades, been absorbed by Griffith Observatory.

This review examines the development of sport psychology in the years 1920 to 1940, with particular emphasis on Coleman Griffith. Griffith was the most active person in the field in this era and was the first North American to devote a significant portion of his or her career to research, teaching, and service in sport psychology. The approach Griffith took in conceptualizing and studying sport psychology will also be emphasized. In essence, the most lasting legacy of Griffith is the research to practice orientation he epitomized that provides an excellent model for contemporary sport psychologists to emulate.

Abstract:
Several ASTM standards on the fracture of glued and welded joints need attention because they do not consider the Griffith energy criterion of cracking which was proposed a century ago. It is almost as if Griffith never existed because the ASTM definition of failure is the stress criterion postulated by Galileo in 1638 in which stress at failure (i.e. strength = force/area) is defined as the determinant of fracture. Irene Martinez Villegas (Villegas, Rans 2021 Phil. Trans. R. Soc. A 376, 20200296. ( doi:10.1098/rsta.2020.0296 )) shows in this volume that attempts to use ASTM D5868 to standardize welded composite (carbon fibre reinforced polymer, CFRP) lap joints reveal major problems. First, the test is a low angle bend–peel test; not shear. Second, the energy required to break the joint is not emphasized so that joints may have high strength properties but also low toughness; third, the fracture force is not proportional to the lap joint area so the concept of strength independent of sample size is false; fourth, as the CFRP panels are made thicker, the strength rises at constant overlap area so the strength can be any value you want; fifth, the strength of larger joints goes down; this is the size effect noted in many bend-cracking tests, much as Galileo suggested for bent beam fracture in his famous book ‘the larger the machine, the greater its weakness'. The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate that poor ASTM ‘shear strength’ standards should be replaced by a definition of welded lap joint performance based on Griffith's energy conservation argument in which fracture surface energy is the main parameter resisting failure. The foundation of this Griffith-style lap joint analysis for long cracks goes back to 1975 but has been largely ignored until now because it does not fit the Griffith equation for cracked sheets, has no ‘stress intensity factor’, and travels at constant speed, not accelerating like the standard Griffith tension crack. This study of tensile delamination shows that a long lap crack is not driven by stress near the crack but by changes in stored elastic energy in the stretched strips remote from the crack tip, while strain energy release rate is negative. It would be more appropriate to call this lap failure a tensile delamination crack. Abstract:
Analysis of the Labour Market in Metropolitan Areas: A Spatial Filtering ApproachThe power of today's computers allows us to perform computation on massive quantities of data on the one hand and produces enormous amounts of analysis output on the other, as noted by Griffith in his 2003 book. Besides, visualisation and spatial filtering (the core of considerations in Griffith's book) have a chance to be widely used in research practice, especially in geosciences and, more precisely, for georeferenced data. Following the idea proposed by Patuelli et al. (2006, 2009), we analysed the labour market in Poland, focusing on metropolitan areas and their surroundings. The analysis was performed on a data set for the unemployment rate in the 2,478 Polish communes. We took into account spatial autocorrelation and used spatial filtering techniques to construct components of an orthogonal map pattern. As shown in Tiefelsdorf & Griffith (2007), the spatial filtering techniques could be employed in both, parametric and semi-parametric approaches. In this paper we adopted a parametric one.

Abstract:
William Griffith wrote an account of the plants collected by Theodore Cantor in 1840 while on a military expedition to Chusan in China. This was published posthumously in 1854, but was also distributed in 1844 or 1845 as a preprint. The 14 new names at species rank appearing in the paper are reviewed (including the often overlooked Leucopogon ophirensis and Corylopsis grata) and their typification considered. Lectotypes are designated for 10 of these names, one second-stage lectotypification is proposed, and Corylopsis griffithii Hemsl. is also lectotypified.

Abstract:
In his early films, created during his collaboration with the Biograph company, D.W. Griffith often varied the same plot moves and schemes, while achieving great variety. Thus, two films of 1912, The Girl and Her Trust and The Lesser Evil, contain a very similar set of functions and devices, the distribution of which, however, leads to different semantic effects. Some of them — pointing to the possibility of a dual reading of the motivation of the characters and their psychology — unexpectedly anticipate the further development of cinema. As Roger Caillois writes in his notes on fantastic art, a necessary condition for the fantastic (or miraculous) is its involuntary nature, which often arises due to the contradiction between the openly formulated meaning and the elements that are not integrated into it. This observation can be extended to the whole realm of the aesthetic. At a time when cinema is taking its first steps and discovering elementary means of expression, Griffith’s psychological nuances seem redundant, premature, and therefore miraculous.

Abstract:
In 2020, staff at Griffith University, Australia used a best practice and evidence-informed orientation event framework to create the University’s first series of fully online, university-wide orientation sessions. The PECS design framework was created to ensure that orientation events at Griffith focused on developing students’ sense of belonging at their institution. For the first time, this framework was used as the foundation of the new “Griffith Welcome Sessions”. This study uses established qualitative methods to analyse 572 student surveys about the Griffith Welcome Sessions. It finds that the use of a PECS orientation design framework improved students’ orientation experience and helped them to develop a sense of connection at university. This study also establishes that the PECS-based orientation sessions remained a key driver for many students’ continued sense of belonging five weeks after the sessions were delivered.

Abstract:
It is nearly a century since Alan Arnold Griffith developed his energy criterion for the fracture propagation of cracks in ‘near-continuous’ solids. Needless to say that his celebrated work has revolutionized the world of material science. In a very succinct way, Griffith connected between three important aspects of the fracture process: (i) the material, (ii) the stress level, and (iii) the geometry of the crack. Nothing similar was developed for brittle granular matter, although in these materials fracture propagates in the sense of comminution. Recently, I have developed an energy theory, called breakage mechanics, based on the concept of breakage. However, the analogy between the mechanics of breakage and fracture is missing. Here I establish this relation using energy principles and derive a critical comminution pressure for brittle granular materials. This critical pressure is surprisingly complementary to Griffith's critical tensile stress for near-continuous materials. This step enables for the first time to apply the principles of fracture mechanics to all disciplines dealing with confined particles comminution such as geophysics, geology, geotechnical engineering, mineral processing, agriculture and food industry, pharmaceutics and powder technology.

Abstract:
Zener-Stroh crack is formed via coalescing dislocations piled up against an obstacle such as an interface of bimaterial. The crack is loaded by the total number of dislocations entered it, while the well-known Griffith crack is loaded by the stress traction acting on the crack surfaces. In the present paper, a Zener-Stroh crack at the interface of an anisotropic elastic bimaterial is formulated with recent improvements in two dimensional anisotropic elasticity and interfacial Griffith crack. Many interesting features of the Zener-Stroh crack are drawn from the present study and compared with those of the Griffith crack.
