Abstract:
The use of fractal structures in contemporary architecture is presented. Features and properties of nature fractal structures and abilities of their usage in architectural objects at the level of three components structure, construction, shell or form - are discussed. The theme of fractals is seen in F.L. Rights works, who positioned organic approach, Le Corbusier, who got ahead the time with his ideas of ecological approach to projecting. In contemporary architecture fractal structures are successfully use by such famous professionals as Daniel Libeskind, Greg Lynn, Toyo Ito.

Abstract:
During the 1990s, the word baroque reappears in some discourses on emerging digital architecture and the changes induced by new design and production softwares. Can we say that some architects are extending a baroque impetus in new exploratory modes of architectural form by digital tools? This thesis proposes an approach that combines philosophy, anthropology and linguistics to analyze the speeches of two architects, pioneers in the development of digital technologies. Greg Lynn (USA, 1967*) approaches the design by algorithms that generate complex forms, while Bernard Cache (France, 1958*) explores and theorizes the file-to-factory, which is a continuous chain between design and production. They become closer in their respective interpretation of The Fold, Leibniz and the Baroque, Gilles Deleuze (1988), a philosophical work from which they pull out many concepts to theorize the themes of continuity, the infinite variety of forms, and the non-standard. The analysis focuses on the involvement of the baroque in the discursive strategies as an homology structuring their thoughts, and raises its fictional dimension. The concept, in addition to be a founding archetype of the imaginary of these architects, is a useful operating tool in their theoretical and architectural productions. However, it is adapted to answer the intellectual challenges of their time

Abstract:
Principles of design composition are commonly understood to pertain to geometrical systems for arranging parts in assembling a formal whole. Connection to socio-cultural 'meaning' and relevance arguably occurs primarily via the assumed divinity or universality of these systems. In the contemporary architectural world, where explicitly held beliefs in fundamental, geometrically defined principles or values have dissipated, guiding principles of composition appear to be obsolete. This seems particularly true in relation to work that highlights process - or change, responsiveness, interactivity and adaptability - since this implies that the composition remains in flux and unable to be grounded in the composition of form. While processually inflected architecture (referred to here as 'processual architecture'), has been an active field since at least the 1960s, it has been significantly developed since design experiments involving digital computation intensified in t he 1990s. For this field of work, both highly celebrated and criticised as superficial or unethical, any connection to 'meaning' or value that might be offered by principles of composition would appear especially lost. This thesis reviews, counterpoises and reorients these assumptions, arguing a case for the value of processual architectural that has not been previously articulated. After the last 10 to 15 years of digital experimentation, it is clear that digital technology in itself is not the primary issue, but simply part of a complex equation. The thesis articulates this 'equation' through the model of emergence, which has been used in the field with increasing prominence in recent years. Through both practice-based research and theoretical development, a processually inflected theory of composition is proposed. This offers pathways through which the potential of processual architecture might be productively developed, aiming to open this field of work into a deeper engagement with pressing contemporary socio-political issues. The thesis demonstrates how the cultivation of particular modes of attention and engagement, found to hold an implicit but nevertheless amplified significance within processual architecture, make it possible to develop an embodied awareness pertaining to an 'ethico-aesthetic know-how'. This know-how is acquired and matured through attention to the affective dimensions that arise through design activity. The thesis highlight aspects of design process and products that are routinely suppressed in architectural discourse, generating new insights into the importance of affect for design process, design products and the relations between them. The ethical dimensions of such an approach become especially poignant through the explicit connection made between design activity and the practices of everyday life. Relationships between architecture and the social become re-energised, in a radically alternative manner to the social agendas of modernism or the more literary critiques of post-modernism. Through detailed discussions of the specific, local conditions with a series of design projects I have undertaken, I argue how and why close attention to the affective dimensions of design process offers new and productive ways to approach research through design practice. This offers a response to the calls for new 'post-critical' forms of research through empowering both sides of a previously held divide: theory and practice.

Abstract:
Humans affect ecosystems by changing species compositions, landscape and climate. This thesis aims to increase our understanding of anthropogenic effects on mesopredator abundance due to changes in apex predator status, landscape and climate. I show that in Eurasia the abundance of a mesopredator, the red fox (Vulpes vulpes), is limited top-down by the Eurasian lynx (Lynx lynx) and bottom-up by winter severity. However, where lynx has been eradicated, fox abundance is instead related to bottom-factors such as cropland (paper I, II). Fox abundance was highest when croplands constituted 25% of the landscape (paper II). I also project red fox abundance in Sweden over the past 200 years and in future scenarios in relation to lynx density, land use and climate change. The projected fox abundance was highest in 1920, when lynx was eradicated and the proportion of cropland was 22%. In 2010, when lynx had recolonised, the projected fox abundance was lower than in 1920, but higher than in 1830. Future scenarios indicated that lynx abundance must increase in respond to climate change to keep fox at the same density as today. The results suggest a mesopredator release when lynx was eradicated, boosted by land use and climate change, and that changes in bottom-up factors can modify the relative strength of top-down factors (paper IV). From 1846-1922, lynx, wolverine (Gulo gulo) and grey wolf (Canis lupus) declined in Scandinavia due to persecution; however I show that the change in wolverine abundance was positively related to the changes in lynx and wolf abundance. This indicates that wolverine is subsidized by carrions from lynx and wolf kills rather than limited top-down by them (paper III). This thesis illustrates how mesopredator abundance is determined by a combination of top-down and bottom-up processes, and how anthropogenic impacts not only can change the structures of predator guilds, but also may modify top-down processes through changes in bottom-up factors.

Abstract:
Today, the issues related to the presence of bears and wolves in the Czech Republic are more frequently discussed due to their occasional occurrence. The significant part of the public still considers these predators dangerous and they even think that a man is supposed to be their potential prey. A lot of surveys confirming this have been already taken, but none of them was focused on the views of primary and secondary schools students. As they are a part of the school education system, their views on the large carnivores should be mainly shaped by it. A questionnaire-based survey was used to find the attitudes of students. The first part of the questionnaire focused on the students' opinions about the dangerousness of predators, its reasons and common wolf presence in the Czech Republic. The second part of the questionnaire is focused on the domestic dog, which has wolf origins. It deals mainly with the attitudes of students to selected dog breeds, dog domestication awareness and views on the so- called "fighting breeds". This work has been aimed at identification of attitudes of the primary and secondary school students from different regions of the Czech Republic to the selected predators. The survey was also taken at primary schools in the High Tatras Mountains, an area where all the large...

Abstract:
Lead is useful, surprising, unpredictable, dangerous – and deadly. Lead is useful. Previous generations found it to be an essential part of civilized living: pipes, pewter, pottery, paints, and even potions were made with it. Toy soldiers were cast from it, port wine protected by it; grey hair was disguised with it, church roofs covered with it; cosmetics contained it, and cans of food were sealed with it. Lead is surprising. In 1859, Professor Lyon Playfair was taking the 18-year-old Prince of Wales, and future King Edward VII, round the chemistry laboratories of Edinburgh University when they came across a pot of molten lead. Playfair then carried out a remarkable demonstration: he poured the molten metal over the fingers of his assistant and to the Prince’s amazement the young man’s hand was unharmed. The Prince too wanted to try the same test, and after rinsing his hand in dilute ammonia solution, lead was poured over his fingers as well – again without scalding them. This demonstration was still being performed before stunned audiences in the 1950s, and the trick is to have the hand wet, so that as the metal hits the film of water on the skin it forms an instant layer of vapour that both protects the skin and causes the lead to bounce off in tiny droplets. Lead is unpredictable. In Shakespeare’s Merchant of Venice those who would seek to marry the fair Portia are offered three caskets from which to choose: gold, silver, or lead. The man who chooses the casket containing her portrait will win her hand in marriage. Of course the winning choice is lead, the casket with the curiously foreboding inscription: ‘Who chooseth me must give and hazard all he hath’ and her would-be suitor Bassanio reasons that this must be the right one saying: …‘. . . but thou, thou meagre lead, Which rather threat’nest than does promise aught, Thy plainness moves me more than eloquence, And here choose I; joy be the consequence!’ [The Merchant of Venice, III, ii]…
