Moreno, Gabriela Elena. "Mean Green: A Visual Cultural Analysis of the National Border Patrol Museum." Diss., The University of Arizona, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/228170.

Full text
Abstract:
The National Border Patrol Museum (NBPM) in El Paso, Texas presents a view of the history, culture and life along the U.S.-Mexico border that no other museum in the world can offer. Moreover, it provides an opportunity to study and understand people and life in the border through the different forms in which they are representing themselves and how others view them as well. Mean Green: A Visual Cultural Analysis of the National Border Patrol Museum is a visual cultural analysis of the museum that deploys theoretical approaches in the disciplines of visual and cultural studies, Border Studies, Ethnic Studies, discourse analysis, museology, and spatial theory. The objectives of this dissertation are: 1) to study the varied representations, i.e., the hypermasculine white American male and the disenfranchised "illegal" immigrant, that reinforce and challenge the dominant discourse present in the hegemonic state and which are deconstructed when rearticulated in everyday border life; 2) to analyze why the museum represents a homotopia within the limits of a heterotopia; 3) to learn how the museum creates imagined communities through the use of its historical patrimony; 4) to observe the practices in relations of power by employing the notion of panopticon in their design and impose power over its visitors; and finally 5) to understand how the museum is providing a commodification of symbols to promote the hegemonic state. I reference historical events to frame the research for this project: history of the border, especially the El Paso border region, the creation of The Fraternal Order of Retired Border Patrol Officers, the history of the Border Patrol and the NBPM. Altogether, this work shows how the National Border Patrol Museum's exhibits and artifact displays are a reflection of what is happening in the border region.

The present work aims to a conceptual strategy that runs through different scales operating from the city of Lisbon territory associated to the Campo Grande area until the definition of the detail is materialized on the proposed equipment: an expansion of a Museum for the City for the XX/XXI centuries. The used methodology was implied by the development of these elements and mediated by the critical reflexion supported in the theoretical references that focus on fundamental themes such as: the relation with the City, the Territory and the Place for the constitution of a new sense of urbanity promoted by the Museum recalling the concern of becoming a Monument. The final definition associated to a drawing of the project has the objective of critically reflect about these fundamental architecture themes in which the main conclusion is to be constituted by the drawn building that does not conclude the maturation process even though it reafirms its qualities enounciating itself before the set of possibilities that are somehow cleared by the established idea of architecture.

In an effort to confront global warming and the increasing scarcity of resources, the preservation community began several years ago to adopt sustainable and green building practices and metrics for historic rehabilitation projects. As a result, there is an ever growing number of rehabilitated historic buildings in the United States not only incorporating sustainable building designs but also achieving Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification. Most of these are large, architect-designed buildings in urban settings rehabilitated for cultural and commercial uses. This thesis explores the application of the LEED 2009 New Construction and Major Renovation Rating System for the development of a sustainable rehabilitation plan for the modest vernacular 1897 Jeff. Smith's Parlor Museum in Skagway, Alaska. The goal of this research is to demonstrate how the LEED rating system might be applied to the rehabilitation of this building and other historic vernacular buildings.

Beckham, Jessica L. "The Influence of Urban Green Spaces on Declining Bumble Bees (Hymenoptera: Apidae)." Thesis, University of North Texas, 2016. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc849737/.

Full text
Abstract:
Bumble bees (Bombus spp.) are adept pollinators of countless cultivated and wild flowering plants, but many species have experienced declines in recent decades. Though urban sprawl has been implicated as a driving force of such losses, urban green spaces hold the potential to serve as habitat islands for bumble bees. As human populations continue to grow and metropolitan areas become larger, the survival of many bumble bee species will hinge on the identification and implementation of appropriate conservation measures at regional and finer scales. North Texas is home to some the fastest-growing urban areas in the country, including Denton County, as well as at least two declining bumble bee species (B. pensylvanicus and B. fraternus). Using a combination of field , molevular DNA and GIS methods I evaluated the persistence of historic bumble bee species in Denton County, and investigated the genetic structure and connectivity of the populations in these spaces. Field sampling resulted in the discovery of both B. pensylvanicus and B. fraternus in Denton County's urban green spaces. While the relative abundance of B. fraternus in these spaces was significantly lower than historic levels gleaned from museum recors, that of B. pensylvanicus was significantly higher. Statistical analyses found that both bare ground and tree cover surrounding sample sites were negatively associated with numbers of bumble bee individuals and hives detected in these green spaces. Additionally, limited genetic structuring of bumble bee populations was detected, leading to the conclusion that extensive gene flow is occurring across populations in Denton County.

Giampili, Ioanna Danai. "Exploring the use of participatory practices in Greek museum education through the prism of identity." Thesis, University of Cambridge, 2018. https://www.repository.cam.ac.uk/handle/1810/280283.

Full text
Abstract:
The research presented in this PhD dissertation provides a socio-educational perspective on the participatory representation of identity in Greek Laographic Museums. Museums are seen as an extension of formal educational spaces through their educational activities and school partnerships or outreach programmes (Hooper-Greenhill, 2007). However, they are also mainly engaging in the process of interpreting the cultures and communities represented in their collection, thus, assigning them an identity, which they then present to the public (McLean, 2005, 2008). The public, in turn, interprets it through the lens of their own identities. A result of this process is the creation and sharing of new knowledge about identity through exhibition design (Jones, Sandweiss, Mouliou, & Orloff, 2012; McLean, 2006; Newman & McLean, 2006; O’Neill, 2006). This study adopts the stance that exhibition design is the primary way museums are fulfilling their educational role. It puts forward the idea that the involvement of community members in the founding of a museum about their local identity can result in a rich, polyphonous narrative and positively affect the bond and sense of ownership the community develops in relation to the museum and their locale. This is in line with literature predicting that in the context of multicultural societies and increased mobility, bringing people together through shared cultural elements of the location they have in common, can aid social cohesion and inclusion (Graham & Howard, 2008; Hague & Jenkins, 2005; Howard, 2003). As a theoretical starting point, this research was guided by the views of Hall (1997a,1992) on changing identities and the links between identity, culture, interpretation and narrative for being potentially more reflective of current museological practice that is starting to operate within a participatory paradigm. Designed as a case study around the founding of a new museum on a small Greek island, Astypalaia, it used participatory methods in a variety of ways to engage local residents in the process of collaboratively designing the exhibition narrative of this new space that would share the story of life on the island. To frame the main case study, this research also mapped the practices of laographic museums across Greece, in order to point out what a typical museum of that type looks like in this context and assess in what ways Astypalaia is in line or deviates from this. The results of this process were compared to the findings of the case study and linked to literature on participation, education, and identity construction in museums and communities. The following discussion argues that, while collaborative projects require structure, effort and skills in their facilitation, they have the potential to make a museum narrative more representative and inclusive and benefit their participants in multiple ways. By having access to the project from its conception until its final stages, this work aims to provide a holistic view of the challenges and possibilities of implementing a participatory approach in the founding of a new museum and to discuss the knowledge such a process generates.

Abstract:
The subject of this diploma thesis is an architectonic study, which deals with the new usage of the premises of VUT at Kravi Hora. Big part of Kravi Hora forms a park, which from the west is close to Namesti Miru and from the east side there are buildings of Faculty of Civil Engineering. This territory along with Spilberk, Luzanky and Wilsonuv Les form the green, environmental friendly, part of Brno. The Main advantage of this territory is that it brings lot of green parking places to the city and there are many places for spending free time, such as; swimming pool, baseball court and an observatory. The big disadvantage of this area is the bad transmittance of this area. There are no quality roads connecting Kravi hora and there is a slanting ground through this area. There are lots of objects which do not fit with the usage and they only bring here the traffic. There is a designed plan consisting of rather limiting regulations for this territory when the whole area is used for parking lots and sport activities and holiday objects. And in addition to that, the area is closed to public transport. The purpose of this study is to respect the territorial plans and the interests of the city as much as possible and at the same time use the property of VUT for a representation of the University, getting new students in and creating a place where all the generations can spend their free time. Despite of this study still respects The Territory Plan and interests of the City of Brno. In my study I design there the museum of VUT, the students club, ateliers for new graduates, study room, workroom the public and objects for presentation of VUT faculties set into the area of Kravi hora park in a way that it would fit into the natural character of this place.

Kioussis, Sokratis I. "'Nature' and 'culture' in Greek contemporary museum practice : a study of the Goulandris Museum (of Natural History)." Thesis, University of East Anglia, 2011. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.658703.

Full text
Abstract:
In its various manifestations, 'art' could be described as a product of 'nature', on which it often reflects, alongside being a product of 'culture'. In recent and past scholarship 'nature' and 'culture' are often treated as opposed categories. Museums in particular have a role in the creation and maintenance ' of a nature/culture configuration. Representing the world in different ways, they have established boundaries between them in the very act of focusing attention on each and increasing understanding in both domains. Drawing on different museological traditions and responding to contemporary issues, the project of creating The Goulandris Museum has brought 'nature' and 'culture' together in its program, exploiting antiquities and other evocations of the ancient world to explain the natural world, especially in its latest schemes. This thesis· examines !he background to such practices, the ideas it embodies and the challenges it sets itself. However, it is more than a study of the history of one particular museum created in the second half of the twentieth century; this thesis also considers the history of other European museums, whose practices and development over time have contributed to the distinctive schema realised in Athens in recent decades. Chapter I introduces the Goulandris Museum and discusses the different ways in which museums have chosen to represent nature. Touching on the means by which they generate knowledge and awareness of the natural world, it discusses how the representation of nature in itself also reflects mankind's plasmatic relationship with the natural world. Chapter II looks back to 'cabinets of curiosity' and the founding and development of three influential institutions to reflect on the tradition of natural history museums in Europe. Chapter III continues with a conceptual and historical reading of London's Natural History Museum, an institution that greatly contributed to the rationale and public presentation of the Goulandris Museum, setting up its first displays. The detail of this particular institutional relationship is examined in Chapter IV, an analysis based on original archival research conducted at the Natural History Museum. . Chapter V examines the displays and practices of the Goulandris Museum prior to the emergence of its research and education centre ('Gaia Centre'), which we explore separately in Chapter VI in conjunction with the New Acropolis Museum, an institution that was designed by the same.architect, Michalis Photiadis. Interviews conducted with him and with the Director and several staff of the Goulandris Museum inform our analysis. That with Mrs. Goulandris is referenced throughout the thesis. The literature review is also · distributed through the thesis at the points where it is relevant and especially in Chapter V which discusses the literature on the history and conception of natural history museums as points of access to the 'real' world of nature. . This thesis is set in a conceptual but also in a historical conte:r:t, as indeed were the ambitions of the founders of the Goulandris Museum. It was the first natural history museum in Greece, and the Qoulandrises sought to situate their new project within both European traditions of natural history museums ' and the traditions of archaeological and classical collections, which had until then dominated the Greek understanding of the purposes of museums. Drawing on these sources, the Goulandris Museum has arrived at its latest scheme which deploys ideas of nature and of culture to shape a very particular identity within Greece ' and to engage and infOlID its visitors.

Abstract:
Diploma thesis theme is design of a new synagogue in the city of Trutnov on a memorial site of the original unpreserved synagogue. Part of the construction program is the creation of a complex used by the Jewish religious community and its members, containing a building for the Jewish community (administrative and educational use), kosher restaurants with use for the general public, and the Museum of Jewish Culture. The aim of the design is to create a set of buildings functioning as a whole respecting the natural landmark of the surroundings and the historical significance referring to the past. The new synagogue is designed as the dominant feature of the whole complex in the place of the original Jewish prayer house and emphasizes the monumentality of the place connected with nature. Other facilities are located in front of the synagogue and create a new public space for locals but also visitors to the city from a wide area not only for spiritual use but also for cultural, social, and recreational.

Abstract:
This thesis is an aetiological investigation of the Hellenistic and Roman figural bronze statuettes in the round that form part of the Ashmolean Museum's antiquities collection. The collection serves as a lens through which to study aspects of ancient and modern receptions of Classical sculptural forms. This approach is based on the premise that the collection's composition has been historically determined not only by how the modern parties responsible for its creation and growth responded to the sculptural forms and images recovered from antiquity, but also by how sculptural forms developed in Greece during the Classical and early Hellenistic periods were received by makers and users of bronze statuettes in antiquity. The thesis has three primary objectives: firstly, to produce a useful and informative catalogue of the Ashmolean Museum's collection of Hellenistic and Roman figural anthropomorphic bronze statuettes in the round; secondly, to determine not only how that collection came to have the characteristics that it does, but also how the reception of ancient sculpture has historically affected the formation of collections of bronze statuettes and their compositions; thirdly, to use archaeological evidence of bronze statuettes to reconstruct possible contexts and to determine in greater detail the reception of canonical sculptural figure types in the form of small bronzes during the Hellenistic and Roman periods. Part I of the thesis deals with the modern contexts for the statuettes, investigating the collection history, pulling out its salient characteristics and then comparing these to other major collections to make informed observations about how and why specific types of statuettes have survived from antiquity and the roles that modern reception of antiquity has played in shaping collections. This leads to Part II, which attempts to reconstruct possible ancient contexts for the Ashmolean bronzes by looking at the archaeological evidence for their production, movement use and display. Part III uses some of the figures of dwarfs, Herakles and Hermes in the collection to develop case studies that examine aspects of the visual relationships that existed between small bronzes and classical sculpture from the Classical and early Hellenistic periods.

Girardon, Sheila Patricia. "Italic votive terracotta heads from the British Museum : a stylistic appraisal in their religious and historical settings." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 1994. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/1349436/.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis aims to examine a collection of Italic votive terracotta heads, dated between the early 4th and the late 2nd centuries B.C., in the British Museum. The study proposes a stylistic appraisal of the terracotta heads in their religious and historical settings divided into three parts. The first part includes the introduction and five chapters. In the first chapter is discussed the religious background: Greek healing gods) Italic and Roman healing cults and Aesculapios. The second chapter is concerned with the religiousness of the Italic peoples: their devoutness; the cults; the practice of the caput velatum. Chapter three deals with the notion of votive offering in the ancient world: the origin; in the Greek religious sphere; the votive offerings as an exchange, as substitution, as gifts; their place in the sanctuary; in the Italic religious sphere and their distribution on the Italian territory; the specialisation of sanctuaries; the anatomical ex-votos; miniaturisation of votives as substitution; fertility, puberty and well-being. Chapter four deals with ancient medicine and the anatomical votives: the dawn of medical science; the evidence of the anatomical votives; medical interpretation of the votives; representation of diseased organs. In chapter five are considered the sanctuary and the worshippers: the types of sanctuaries; the identification and location of sanctuaries; the evidence for healing cults; the votive deposits; the appearance and disappearance of anatomical votive terracottas; the historical background. The second part includes three chapters. Chapters ix considers the various stylistic influences: in pre-Roman Etruria; in central and southern Italy; the Roman influence; copies of famous sculptures and their relationship with votive terracottas. Chapter seven is a survey of the jewellery displayed on the female heads: crowns; diadems; earrings; necklaces. Chapter eight is a survey of the hairstyles displayed on both female and male heads. Chapter nine examines the technique of manufacture of the votive heads: the problems of mass-production; the workshops and the artisans; the specific, heads in the British Museum. The third part of this study includes an extensive catalogue of the female and male heads divided into groups according to their stylistic affinities. The catalogue is introduced by a section on the classification and terminology. The thesis is concluded by a synopsis of the focal points of part one and two integrated by the observations on the groups of heads in the catalogue.

Zapri, Dimitra. "An ecological examination of young children's museum-related perceptions : a Greek case study." Thesis, University of Leicester, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/2381/31155.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to provide an alternative ecological approach to exploring the nature of young children's perceptions about museums, and the conditions where these perceptions are developed. Drawing on Urie Bronfenbrenner's ecological theory of human development (1979) and James Gibson's theory of affordances (1986), the study conceptualises museums as ecological settings, and perceptions as ecological entities, which are formed through dynamic transactions between individuals and their environment. The study attempts to identify the contextual parameters of young children's museum perceptions, by implementing ecological research principles in terms of a qualitative research ethos. The study followed a largely ethnographic approach, combining naturalistic research methods with sets of questionnaires, in the context of multiple museum visits and feedback sessions with children, museum professionals and parents. The field research focused on a Greek museum context and was conducted in collaboration with three museums, nine kindergarten schools and nineteen children of approximately five years of age and their families.;Findings suggest a weak relation between museums and young children's developmental contexts. On the one hand, museums seem to demonstrate a lower commitment towards young children and their families, which is reflected in teachers' and parents' feeling that current museum education provision is not supportive enough for their own needs or those of young children. On the other, young children seem to be able to perceive a wider range of possibilities in the museum setting, but such perceptions do not seem to be sustained in the long-term, as parents may not include museum visits in their leisure agenda. A major issue raised is the question of accessibility --- intellectual or physical --- and relevance of any cultural setting to its local community. The thesis proposes a long-term museum education for building sustainable relationships between museums and local communities at an early stage.

Gioftsali, Katerina. "Families visiting museums as communities of learners : a Greek case study." Thesis, University of Leicester, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/2381/31150.

Full text
Abstract:
This study addresses the learning process as well as the impact of the Community of Learners supporting programme on family learning experiences in Greece in order to provide them with a motive to visit local museums during their leisure time. It was a qualitative study rooted in constructivist and sociocultural learning theory of participation in communities of learners. Observation data during learning communities' meetings and museum visits combined with in-depth interviews with participants yielded much information about the social context of the family museum experience and particularly the behaviour of families in shared activities.;Thus, different levels of learning outcomes were identified from gaining information, knowledge and skills through developing new insights, enjoyment, as well as deep learning through increased understanding and most of all changed attitudes and values. Specifically, the interviews with families clearly show that the learning outcomes from participating in the community of learners' programme frequently related to attitudes and values. Most of the families commented that this programme changed their attitudes towards Greek museums and motivated them to visit museums more frequently as organized learning communities. The responses from families indicated an increase in knowledge and understanding was another learning outcome. Furthermore, families increased their skills, especially social skills, as they were active participants in the learning communities. As a result, many families were satisfied, inspired and very creative through their participation in the programme and this led them to a progression in their behaviour and actions in dealing with environmental issues.

Abstract:
The focus of this thesis is an architectural study of the Kraví Hora area in Brno in a 1:200 scale. The area is significant in both size and location, but has been underutilized up to this point. The objective of the thesis is to discover a solution acceptable for the city of Brno as well as BUT, whose intentions with the area differ significantly. The area has been designed to have recreational spaces of greenery. Traffic has been either largely reduced, or eliminated entirely. A wide variety of sports, eductational programs and recreational activities has been made available for visitors of all ages. The objective of the planned area is to inspire and positively motivate the study of technology and interest in science via its functional design. Exhibition areas, lecture halls, rentable workspaces for graduates, a recruitment center and general storage spaces has been designed in the area. The design of the buildings is based around the incline of the plot – they have a maximum of one extra floor over the level of the surrounding terrain. The green roof and the vertical outer layer of laminated timber is designed to provide a natural character to the structures. The predominantly horizontal area is granted an element of verticality in the form of a lookout tower.

Hancock, Rosemary Joy. "Muslims Going Green: Islamic Environmental Activism in the United States and Great Britain." Thesis, The University of Sydney, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/2123/14655.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines Muslim environmental activism in the United States and Great Britain, utilising a theoretical framework of social movement theory. Through interviews with Muslim environmentalists, supported by textual data produced by Islamic environmental organisations, the thesis analyses the way Muslim environmentalists frame environmental crises, how they motivate and sustain their activism through emotion and identity work, and their use of ‘moderate’ forms of activism. Islamic environmentalism has not received due academic attention from social movement theorists or Islamic studies scholars. The thesis contributes to the literature on social movements by testing the theory in new ground: Islamic environmental activism is simultaneously a religious movement and a secular movement, and this offers interesting avenues for theorising on the role of religion in social movements. The thesis also contributes to Islamic studies literature: although there is a very small body of academic work on Islamic environmentalism, none apply social movement theory to this area. The thesis argues Muslim environmentalists are drawn into activism through (i) affective ties to friends, romantic partners, and charismatic leaders, and (ii) due to a strong sense of religious duty that stems from a very particular, environmental understanding of Islamic scripture and practice. Secondly, the thesis demonstrates the importance of ‘group culture’ for attracting and retaining committed activists. Finally, the thesis contends that Muslim environmentalists demonstrate a synthesis of political activism and religious practice. Religious ritual, symbolism, and narrative are incorporated into political action in such a way that activism becomes religious practice.

Abstract:
Sustainability is an overused term in global politics. Yet, deciding on what to sustain indefinitely, and over time, in the face of the current ecological crisis is essentially a matter of moral-ethical concern. The primary objective of this dissertation is to investigate whether Islam, as a religion and spiritual tradition, has something to say about present-day sustainability problems. A secondary, but no less important objective of the present work is to examine the cultural, social, and political aspects of sustainability mobilisation and activism in predominantly Muslim contexts. The qualitative ethnographic study, which is based on fifteen semi-structured interviews and two focus groups conducted between 2015 and 2016, focuses on permaculture and eco-justice movements presently operating in Arab-Muslim countries (namely, Morocco and Tunisia) and uses methodological triangulation of frame and narrative analysis. Its main purpose is to empirically detect whether, among the motivational framing strategies deployed by sustainability movement actors to provide reasons for sustainability engagement and action, there is indication of moral-ethical motives that are consistent with the “eco-Islamic” worldview. The study shows that, especially in the Moroccan case, some religious-spiritual motives echo “eco-Islamic” wisdom and its foundational tenets. Overall, however, the normative and performative nature of Islamic ‘eco-tradition’ is unorthodox and syncretic.

Abstract:
The focus of this thesis is the analysis of a Greek–speaking Muslim community that resides in Syria and Lebanon and who claim Greek identity and Diaspora membership on the basis of Greek language and customs. My empirical research on the community was guided by the following research question: in which ways do the members of the Greek-speaking community practice and project their Greek identity? This thesis draws on theories regarding identity construction, community building, memory, gender, diaspora and immigration. All of them have been useful in order to understand and analyze the empirical data gathered during the fieldwork. Anthropological research was conducted for more than 17 months in Syria, Lebanon and Crete. Modern Greeks have constructed their identity around Orthodox Christianity, the Greek language, the glory of Ancient Greece and around policies in support of the Greek state; all concepts that people should respect, support and identify with in order to be included in the Greek fold. The voices of the members of the community in this study tell a counter narrative to that of the official Greek state, and to the formal Greek nationalist historiography that accompanies it. In this counter narrative, Greek history incorporates Muslims, and relates that good relations amongst religious groups are possible and desirable. Significantly, Greek identity is disconnected from Orthodox Christianity, while it does remain attached to Greek customs and Greek language. The community under examination constructs its identity around memories of Crete, gendered norms and practices, and the experience of living in Crete as illegal immigrants.

Abstract:
This thesis explores the desirability of Australia???s State museums to be inclusive of diverse cultures. In keeping with a cultural studies approach, and a commitment to social action, emphasis is placed upon enhancing the ability of State museums to fulfil obligations and expectations imposed upon them as modern collecting institutions in a culturally diverse nation. By relating the desirability and ability of State museums to attaining social justice in a multicultural Australia through broadening the concept of Australia???s heritage, the thesis is firmly situated within post-colonial discourse. The thesis analyses State multicultural, heritage, and museum legislation, in New South Wales, Victoria, and Queensland, with regard to State museums as agents of cultural policy. Results from a survey, Greeks and Museums, conducted amongst Australia???s Greeks in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane, reveal an anomaly between their museum-going habits and the perception of those habits as expressed by government policies promoting the inclusion of Australians of a non-English speaking background in the nation???s cultural programmes. In exploring the issue of inclusiveness, the thesis highlights the need for cultural institutions to shift the emphasis away from audience development, towards greater audience participation. The thesis outlines an initiative-derived Queensland Model for establishing an inclusive relationship between museums and communities, resulting in permanent, affordable, and authoritative collections, while simultaneously improving the museums??? international reputation and networking capabilities. By using the example of one of the nation???s non-indigenous communities, and drawing upon material obtained through the survey, and a catalogue containing photographs and lists of Greek textile collections found in the Powerhouse Museum (MAAS), Sydney, the National Gallery of Victoria and the Immigration Museum, Melbourne, the Queensland Art Gallery and the Queensland Museum, Brisbane, as well as collections owned by private individuals, the thesis focuses on the role played by museums in constructing social cohesion and inclusiveness.

image of the minorities, i.e., Armenians and Greeks, the Turks being other. The research is carried out on the basis of the literary works produced by the intellectuals / authors of these minorities. The historical context, which is taken as the reference point for these discourses, covers the period from the late Ottoman Period up to the early 1960s. Furthermore, the study explores how the ethnic minorities constructed their identities in the last century. This study also seeks to find out which discourses have been the leading ones through history and to determine the continuities and ruptures in the use of themes by these ethnic groups to construct their identities. In addition, policies and ideologies attributed to the state by the minorities are tackled with the literary works and main discursive elements used by minority groups to (de)construct Turkish national identity are explored.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Thesis (MPhil)--University of Stellenbosch, 2003.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: "The growth of any discipline depends on the ability to communicate and develop ideas, and this in turn relies on a language which is sufficiently detailed and flexible" (Singh 1997: 59). Many metaphors relating to creativity are too misleading, confusing, and restricted in scope for a meaningful exploration of the phenomenon and its fluctuating social and cultural contexts. Given the Muse's long-term association with literature, philosophy, education, and more recently, the fine arts and other "creative" fields, an analysis of this concept may provide a unique opportunity to gain insight into the "mechanisms" underlying the creative process. Since affiliation with the Muse appears to have signalled attainment of critical cultural and/or social status by cultural practitioners in various societies, from the ancient to the present (a category which was broadened substantially), it is thus logical to assume this concept encompasses and has accumulated characteristics particular to the creative process as historically and currently valued in Western culture. Given the limited scope of the thesis, I have focused on specific concerns: 1) Provide an overview of the history, origin and development of the concept via specific examples ranging from antiquity, the medieval period, and the modern. 2) Assess the changes which have occurred in the development of the concept, and postulate likely causes: such as for example, the impact of an increased focus on the visual - and by extension, the physical - due to a more literate populace, on a concept originally conceived of as experienced through predominantly audial means. 3) Identify closely related concepts, the characteristics of which may have played a role in the formulation of the initial concept, along with those integrated into it, to form the modern version of the Muse: examples include the influence of the myth of Pygmalion on notions regarding the poet's relationship with both material and Muse; and the consequences of an amalgamation of characteristics of Aphrodite with those of the pastoral Muse. 4) Explore the extent to which the Muse-poet interaction can reveal fundamental aspects of the creative process and its main components: the differences between the public invocation and experience of the Muse in an oral context, as opposed to the privately experienced Muse of the literate poet; also, the changes imposed on the concept's perceived means of functioning due to its extension to the practice of the visual arts; and the correlation between the Jungian notion of the anima and aspects of the Muse. 5) Postulate the fundamental aspects of the creative process as revealed by analysis of the concept of the Muse for further investigation. In brief then, the main intention of this thesis is simply to examine by analysis of particular examples, the feasibility of applying the concept of the Muse as metaphor through which to identify for further exploration, issues and themes relating to the production and changes in social assessment of creative enterprises.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: "The growth of any discipline depends on the ability to communicate and develop ideas, and this in turn relies on a language which is sufficiently detailed and flexible" (Singh 1997: 59).

Abstract:
This thesis covers primarily the detection of operating emission of an old Škoda Felicia car and the emission produced during the manufacturing of a new Toyota Prius, as the selected representative of an ecological car. The thesis also touches on hybrid technology in itself, the question of the greenness of hybrid cars, sphere of emission, but also related problems so called "scrapping" and its influence on environment and also current situation in automobile industry. The target of this study is calculation of operation time of an old Škoda Felicia during which the CO2 emission will reach the same amount of emission produced during manufacturing of a Toyota Prius. The objective is to point out incompetent and therefore not always serious comparison of cars greenness when only the operating CO2 is being compared. Other energy consumption and therefore also the greenhouse gases production is related with the car manufacturing, raw material extraction, petroleum processing and other economic sectors affected by production. Emission laboratory measurement executed by TÜV SÜD Czech discovered that the old Škoda produces 260m/km CO2 during its real running time. For the emission calculation was used an American model EIO-LCA created by Green Design Institute at Carnegie Mellon University that records ecological influence of car production, in stated amount, on all economy sectors. The outputs are quoted in CO2 equivalent. According to this model during manufacturing of 1 hybrid car 13.5 t of CO2e (equivalent CO2). is produced. Recalculation found out that the old Škoda Felicia could run for more than 5 years in order to produce as much emission as the manufacturing of new Toyota Prius third generation.

Abstract:
The research focuses on the eclectic figure of Raffaele Gargiulo, who was a dealer, an expert, a restorer, a collector, a controversial figure in the history of the Naples Museum and Neapolitan antiques market in the first half of the nineteenth century. Starting from his collection of antiquites, one of the richest coming from Magna Graecia and which arrived in the Naples Museum, we have primarily examined the vases and have tried to analyze the restoration methods, the materials used and the choices made to reconstruct the criteria that guided the practice of the vases restoration in the Royal Bourbon Museum in the first half of the nineteenth century. The research analyzes the historical events that led to the purchase, by the Museum, of Raffaele Gargiulo’s collection, focusing mainly on the study of the vases collection. The research, enriched by archival documentation aimed at illustrating the long negotiation in the acquisition of the objects, which began in 1852 and ended in 1855, has shown the judgements and the choices made by the Neapolitan Museum in cooperation with the Commissione di Antichità e Belle Arti. Furthermore, it has contributed to define the figure of the restorer-dealer Gargiulo and his relationship with the people interested in the deal. A combination of archival documentation, old inventories and surveys in the Museum’s stores has allowed us to identify the Gargiulo’s vases collection (about 481 vases) and all the "Gargiulo’s vases" in the Museum. The vases catalogue has been created, in order to classify them according to type of ceramic, with an individual file for each vase. Thanks to the catalogue, which has aimed to the reconstruction of the collection, we have been able to highlight the aspects related to the criteria and to the taste of the collector Gargiulo and of the figures involved (Minister, Director of the Museum, experts, etc.). They have all contributed to the enrichment of the collections of the Naples Museum through the variety of artifacts and provenance from different locations in the Naples Kingdom. The research has also investigated the figure of the restorer Gargiulo, his "career" and his activities at the «Officina dei Vasi Italo-greci» of the Naples Museum. The restoration methods have been analyzed on some vases that still preserve the ancient interventions, focusing on a comparative study between old photos and archival documentation

ABSTRACT Because of misuse of the Earth's resources and increasingly severe pollution of the environment, environmental protection has become one of the world's most pressing issues. In line with the importance attached to this issue and green product trends, green thinking will be an important future trend in the development and design of museum cultural products. This research project performed case studies of six museums in the greater Taipei area: National Palace Museum, Taipei Fine Arts Museum, Museum of Contemporary Art, Taipei, New Taipei City Yingge Ceramics Museum, Su Ho Memorial Paper Museum, and Shung Ye Museum of Formosan Aborigines. This museum case study seeks to assess green museum cultural products. The customer questionnaire survey investigates three aspects in order to explore the current state and future prospects of green museum cultural products, and recommended green design principles for museum cultural products are provided. Chief discoveries: 1. The Status Quo of Museum Cultural Products (1) Assessment of products indicated that the focus of museum cultural products has shifted from past stationery goods to everyday articles. According to the result of the survey, 35% of respondents indicated that they purchased museum cultural products as gifts, while 43% of the respondents purchased museum cultural products for personal use. The result demonstrates that museum cultural products have become a top choice consumer product for gifting or personal use. (2) Most consigned or imported products lack cultural elements specific to the museum in question. Only a very small number of special-theme museums sell products that are readily associated with the museum's cultural elements, such as Su Ho Memorial Paper Museum, and Shung Ye Museum of Formosan Aborigines (3) The environmental aspects of most green museum cultural products are connected with the products per se. However, greater attention to the use of environmental-friendly materials in packaging would be better ensure that products are green both inside and outside. 2. Green Expending and Environmental Messages (1) Depending on the survey, 92% of the respondents indicated that they would be willing, within the scope of their budgets, to spend more money purchasing museum cultural products with environmental-friendly concepts. As long as they were provided with more clear environmental information and choices, consumers would have greater environmental consciousness and pursue consumerism with even greater enthusiasm. (2) As for publicizing the environmental concept of museum cultural products and related information, apart from necessary information on packaging, explanations by sales personnel should have a significant reinforcing effect. In addition, museums should provide special environmental product areas allowing customers to select museum cultural products with environmental concepts. This might be an effective touchstone of green museum cultural products. (3) To base on the survey, 92% of the respondents indicated that they would support museum cultural products. Therefore, museum cultural products should make a transition from the fine replicas of the past to a diversified array of products emphasizing aesthetics, creativity, practical functions, environmental protection, and respect for the Earth. 3. The Strategies for Developing Museum Cultural Products (1) It was discovered that most museums lack clear green museum cultural product development strategies, and only a small number of museums have used environmental-friendly materials in the development of cultural products. In general, it has yet a great room for improvement. (2) 69% of respondents indicated that they would be willing to spend more money purchasing museum cultural products with environmental-friendly concepts and 92% of respondents showed that they would support green museum cultural products. In order grasp opportunities and to create a win-winn situation, Museum must formulate strategies to develop products embodying both cultural creativity and environmental protection. (3) Museum managers have received the concept of green museum cultural products rather positively. The successful development and sale of green products must depend on first achieving a consensus among all personnel at the museum. Museum managers must put the issue in perspective in order to develop green museum products. In summary, museums should deeply consider their social responsibility to offer green museum cultural products that are designed with both cultural creativity and environmental

Green Island Human Rights and Cultural Park is a very meaningful historical site, not only sustains the histories and life-stories during the "white terror period",it also bears the responsibility in preserving the "historicity" of the local civilians.Tracking the time trend, the functions of the museum shifted to the Union of the community and the particularity of the Green Island Human Rights Museum, these deeply influenced local population daily life's and activities. Therefore, since it's establishment, the services carried out by the museum could it meet the needs and expectations of the local people or would it be the platform for future management ? Through mass, placid and sincere visits of the local citizens from different points of views and status, their feedbacks would definitely be the basic references for future management.Other than this, the documentaries and researched data would also be included in my paper. The core target is to look for a better way in the future how the museum and the local people could work together closely and affectively. Concluded as follow: 1. The main operations and services will depend on the needs and projects of the museum at different stages of the administration teams. Exhibition priority and contents are essential in focusing the development and the combination of the Human Rights history to cultural tourism. 2. The impacts due to the establishment of the park to the local civilians' life's are mainly considered how to increase jobs opportunity and tourists attraction. 3. Diversifications of activities with more involvements of the local citizens in the decisions of it's contents, participants, locations and timings,so to fulfill the local civilians's expectations and needs. 4. The activities and services provided and originated in the past by the park were neither attractive nor incentive to the public,so inducing no enthusiasm for any further cooperation and were not encouraging. So,we target on the continuity and long term development of the park.We suggests the park should work more tightly with the local community and firmly sticks to every single activity plans to be carried out in exactness as well to negotiates an acceptable timings and contents to all participants. Training able and prospective personnels and the cooperation with the local community are as essential .Tracking strictly and precisely through the preservation of the historical sites, promotion of human rights education projects , the collection of historical records and working closely with the Green Island civilians would greatly enhance the human rights concepts.

Abstract:
Commissioned in 1865 for London’s South Kensington Museum (now the V&A), the Green Dining Room was conceived during an exciting period in Victorian Britain, when idealistic artists and architects elevated the status of the decorative arts in fine art circles, promoted the ideal of joy in labour, and sought beauty in the everyday. The Green Dining Room is considered a quintessential example of an early decorative scheme by Morris, Marshall, Faulkner & Co., a collective of artists who helped to inspire Britain’s Arts and Crafts movement through their products and their principles of art manufacture. It is adjoined by two other refreshment areas: one designed by James Gamble (a salaried employee of the museum) and the other by Edward Poynter (a promising young painter with an affinity for the decorative arts). The three rooms manifest varied, even conflicting, opinions on the cultivation of design. They indicate how different design professionals hoped to see their art progress. However, the rooms were not simply artistic statements. They were also functioning dining areas for the use of guests and employees of the museum. By assessing the aims of the South Kensington administration, the ambitions of the designers who contributed to the museum’s fabric, and the impressions of Victorians who witnessed the results, I will illustrate how the Green Dining Room occupies a unique position in the history of nineteenth-century design reform.

In the wake of World War Two, Taiwan suffered the huge impact of the February 28 Incident of 1947 and the subsequent White Terror. In the mid-1980s, social movements began to stir, as the democratic movement delivered a fierce attack on the old order. Calls for the redressing of history and the establishment of commemorative museums were a part of this movement, with the erection of commemorative plaques dedicated to the February 28 Incident and the White Terror, not to mention commemorative locations, museums (such as former political prisons) and the like, as the memorialization phenomenon took hold. This culture of memory became an important part of the research into society and culture of the period. Likewise on the international stage, reflecting the global "memorial hall fever" of the museum world, this movement suddenly became a unique feature of global consciousness, international politics and the economic environment. Most of the world''s memorial museums were founded after World War Two, with the number rapidly increasing in the 1980s, so their developmental history has been short. As they touch on the topic of democratic transitional justice of the period, the memorial museums, connected as they are with the global memory research fever, constitute a new subject of research into cultural memory. This study makes use of archival materials of the memorial museums, research on memory and on transitional justice, and practical considerations of planning and design to explicate how the memorial museums in Taiwan relate to international organizations and case examples, and, together with a look at the dialogue between politics and aesthetics, explores the current phenomenon of memorial museum culture. Are memorial museums primarily matters of history or of the memory? Unlike traditional historical museums, they mark the intersect between museums, history and memory in a multi-faceted subject. Taking the Taipei 228 Memorial Museum and the Green Island Human Rights Culture Park as case studies, this research explores the role of memory in the planning of Taiwan''s memorial museums and what sort of memory is manifested in the memorial museum culture. Making use of relatively new territory in museum research, it probes the new cultural phenomena and intellectual challenges of the scientific frontier, examining the prominent areas human rights and public space in memorial museums, and how they have inspired the imagining and bringing to fruition the country''s national human rights museums.

Green marketing is a marketing strategy derived from green consumption. The concept of green consumption was first seen in Our Common future, the report of WCED in 1987. The concept of “sustainable development” was mentioned in the report. In recent years, local and central governments have been valued the concept of green marketing. Enterprises would consider sustainability when they are making business decisions. In the green marketing trend, the government actively promotes low carbon economy by choosing representative green stores, restaurants, and hostels. These representative profit entities would help the district in becoming a representative green shopping district, and other shopping districts would follow it. Therefore, they would value their image as environmental friendly, and a whole new landscape in shopping districts’ competition was shaped. This study would demonstrate green marketing’s impact on the development of urban shopping district and explore the essential elements of green marketing. By case study, the connection between green marketing and the development of the shopping district would be shown in this essay.

This paper systematically analyzes the debates surrounding the origins of Dark Tourism. 2 case studies were selected (The Green Island Human Rights Memorial Park and The 228 Memorial Museum in Taipei) to approach the subject in Taiwan, locating them along the existent literature to prove their relation with the phenomena. Because dark tourism places are sites where people encounter death and suffering, many management issues emerge around them. For example: Ethical, interpretation and marketing/promotional. Therefore, suppliers need to manage such places appropriately based upon understanding and respect of the victim's death and their families. However, this is not always the case and many sites of death around the world have been commodified and commercialized. The main purpose of this research is to address and find the issues exposed around the management of dark tourism in the 2 case studies. To finally analyze the impact these issues had along the creation, evolution and development of the sites.

Due to different life experiences and social changes, there is a gap of attitudes and values between different generations. Sometimes, they fail to understand each other and cause conflicts. In recent years, museums have conducted various activities to enhance intergenerational learning and communication. How do the elderly who suffered from the White Terror interact with the young generation who grew up after the lifting of martial law? What is the role and function of oral histories and museum resources applied and interpreted by White Terror victims? Thus, this research aimed to study the “Green Island Human Rights Road - Youth Experience Camp” as a case study. The camp invited political victims to share their history of white horror and the life experiences of persecution with students. In the end, the students expressed their feedback by performances. The study discovered that guided tour by political victims with oral history provide vivid exhibits images and reality of the suffering and prosecution. They also tried to alleviate the generational barriers by identifying with students. Memories of real people and events helped students to understand the history and viewpoints from different perspectives so that students could understand the atrocities and remember the lesson of history and human rights. The political victims' attitude toward life also inspired students how to face their challenges and difficulties. In addition, students' performances demonstrated their understanding of white terror and their empathy for political victims. The performances consoled the political victims' regret that they have never participated their graduation ceremonies. Apart from the political human rights issues, students also showed concerns of contemporary environment and human rights and claimed that they would act on human rights, democracy, freedom, and so on. However, the political victims often shared their personal experiences which limited the human rights learning. This study suggests that the organizer can held history and human rights courses before the camp that could help students absorb knowledge more comprehensively in the camp. In addition, students can take active role to interview political victims to establish two-way communication. More time for students to explore and visit museums will enhance students' critical thinking and concepts of human rights.

Abstract:
Marcellus como Hermes Logios (a copy) and O Repouso by Gustavo Bastos are two sculptures of the didactic art collection of the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Porto. The first one can be related to a teaching method that this institution has applied over time and that is common to all art academies, which promotes the study of art based on observation and copy of models. While the second one stands for a greater freedom in artistic education, valuing modernity and the creativity of its students. Therefore, the collection belonging to this institution’s museum places itself as of great interest to the public and of undeniable patrimonial value, both making indispensable and urgent its study and preservation. The scarcity of information regarding conservation methods for most of the materials that constitute this works of art (e.g. plaster and cement, as is the case of both sculptures involved) justifies the development and application of specific methods and techniques. Furthermore, given the growing and natural concern with environmental sustainability and health risks for the operator, it is important to establish solutions and treatment methods that are in accordance with the principles of green conservation. The present dissertation thus aims to contribute to the establishment of appropriate methodologies for the treatment of both indoors and outdoors sculptures of a pedagogic nature made of gypsum or cement-based mortars. The analytic techniques implemented have confirmed the complexity of the materials and, therefore, reinforced the need for a careful definition of the procedures to be applied. Hence, it presents substantiated treatment proposals, documenting their application and the success of the conservation processes implemented in each one of the sculptures. The methods selected have good performance and efficiency with little damage to the environment and little risk to the conservator-restorer. Nevertheless, the research carried out in the field of green conservation has shown that the definition of a methodology with uniform and transversal criteria is difficult, depending on a balance between different factors such as protection of the environment, the operator's health and the quality of the cleaning and preservation work.
