Abstract:

Sammanfattning

Syfte

Abstract

Aim

The purpose of this research was to find out how consumers born between 1975-85 who has left their parents home comprehend the “Keyhole mark” symbol. The purpose is also to find out if there is any difference between men and women as well as consumers from the low price store and the normal price store. To evaluate this I have chosen five questions as starting points; 1. Do consumers recognize the symbol? 2. How do consumers describe their understanding of the symbol? 3. What qualities do the consumers ascribe to the keyhole mark? 4. What reasons do the consumer have to choose or not choose products with the keyhole mark? 5. From where has the consumer got the knowledge of the keyhole mark?

Method

60 people, 30 customers at a normal price store and 30 customers at a low price store have answered a questionnaire containing 21 questions. 36 of the people responding were women, and 24 were men. The questionnaire contained both open and closed questions. The selected group is born between 1975-85 and all of them have moved out from their parents home. I have been standing next to products marked with the keyhole mark, and there I have found my respondents. According to an estimation of the possible consumers for the stores I have managed to reach 33% of my sample group at the low price store and 29% at the normal price store.

Results

All of the people responding except one recognized the symbol Keyhole mark. The consumers understand the Keyhole mark as a symbol that conveys healthy and low fat products. Consumers describe the symbol as a mark of low fat and healthy food. They also choose to buy products with these qualities. Consumers do sometimes not choose these products due to the price. Media seems to be the information channel from where the consumers mainly have obtained knowledge of the symbol. There are no clear differences between the answers given by men and women, or between the consumers in the two different types of stores.

Conclusions

Consumers born between 1975-85, who has moved out from their parents home understand the keyhole marks properties well. As good as all respondents recognize the symbol. The majority of the respondents describe the symbol as a mark of low fat and healthy food. That is also the reason why they choose to buy these products. A large percentage of the consumers consider these products expensive. Media appears to be the channel, where a great part of the consumers have obtained knowledge about the keyhole mark. Differences between men´s and women’s knowledge about the keyhole mark are marginal. The same scenario concerns the differences between consumers in the low price store and the normal price store. Earlier studies have shown that a great percentage of the consumers consider the keyhole mark to be kind of environmental mark. The same results was found in the present study .

Sterner, Andrew. "Modeling Survival of Immature Loggerheads (Caretta caretta) and Green Turtles (Chelonia mydas) from 10 Years of Mark-Recapture Data at the Florida Power and Light St. Lucie Plant." Master's thesis, University of Central Florida, 2013. http://digital.library.ucf.edu/cdm/ref/collection/ETD/id/5707.

Abstract:
Loggerheads (Caretta caretta) are listed as Threatened and green turtles (Chelonia mydas) are listed as Endangered under the United States Endangered Species Act. While green turtle nest production in Florida has increased markedly in recent years, loggerhead nest production has followed a more tenuous path. Reasons for these differences are unknown. Limited demographic information is available for these species of conservation concern. I used Barker models, which incorporated mark-recapture, live-resight and dead recovery data, implemented in Program MARK. These models were used to estimate apparent survival for immature loggerhead (<85cm SCL) and green turtle (<60cm SCL) populations foraging in the Atlantic Ocean adjacent to the Florida Power and Light St. Lucie Plant on Hutchinson Island, Florida between 2002 and 2011. My results indicated annual apparent survival was decreasing (from 0.75 to 0.59) for resident immature loggerheads and was stable (~0.81) for resident immature green turtles over the ten year study period. I found that permanent emigration models were better supported than no movement models for both species. Size (straight carapace length) was found to be an important covariate for survival and fidelity parameters in the green turtle analysis but not in the loggerhead analysis. My study is the first to compare survival of two species of immature marine turtles foraging at the same location in the Atlantic. These estimates are also the first available survival estimates for immature marine turtle populations in Florida based on modern mark-recapture techniques, filling a critical knowledge gap. This information is vitally important for managers when evaluating the long-term recovery of these endangered species.

Abstract:
The ongoing trend with urban infill often implicates a conflict with urban green areas, which becomes a problem when green areas in cities are declining and when biodiversity is threatened on a global scale. This case study investigates how green areas and existing biological values are prioritized in an area in Malmö where infill is taking place (Översiktsplan för del av Kirseberg). Specifically, planning process and dialogue, on detailed comprehensive planning level, between the municipality and the landowner is analysed and compared with the policy plan for the area. The methods used are semi-structured interviews combining qualitative and quantitative data. The results show that many of the planning policies regarding green areas are prioritized and considered. However, when it comes to preserving existing vegetation and biological values, these policy goals are prioritized lower than the other policies, which leads to postponed conservation measures. Arguments for planning green areas are about structural concerns and attractivity. Municipal planners are concerned about the low amount of green areas and they find that policies and the planning and building act for green areas give a poor support in the planning process.Vague policy goals for green areas make it difficult for planners to balance between the many policy goals they need to consider. Although the actors have common interests and two-sided compromises are done, profit and a high exploitation level are the priorities of the landowner, which leads to fewer green areas. Landownership therefore limits municipal influence to planfor public interests like green areas. Furthermore, the political focus on high exploitation is another reason for this. Insufficient and outdated policies and planning material are also concerns that affects the planning of green areas.Green areas and biological values are not prioritized enough on the detailed comprehensive planning level neither in the policies of the plan, in the planning process nor in other policies. To change this, both planning laws, policies and political will need to prioritize green areas higher. Many studies state that the planning and building act is insufficient for planning green areas that support ecosystem services on private properties. This seems to apply to this case study as well.

Abstract:
Sustainability is quickly becoming one of the hottest topics among green conscious consumers, as well as managers looking to capitalize on the growth of such interests. Wal-Mart, the world’s largest retailer, is currently marketing itself as a pioneer in sustainability, particularly in the retail industry. With innovations such as a Sustainability Index that measures the environmental and social impacts of products stocked by Wal-Mart, the company is currently marketing their efforts as being exceptional among “big box” retailers. However, few studies have tested those claims to determine if they are accurate. The purpose of this research is to gather data about Wal- Mart’s sustainability impacts and determine whether the marketed claims about sustainability programs are as far-reaching as the retailer claims.

Abstract:
The thesis records a study of difference - the difference between reading and hearing biblical texts. It shows that the types of interpretation people make when reading such texts often differ from those they make when they are hearing the same texts read aloud. The extent of the difference is demonstrated in ten studies where theories relating to reading and hearing are applied to the Greek text of Mark 6:30-8:27a. The biblical texts used in the studies vary in the size, as do the themes and issues investigated. Despite this diversity the results are consistent across all ten studies. Almost all the assessments made in these studies are verified by independent data, such as the published opinions of biblical scholars and literary analyses of the Greek text. As elucidated in the thesis; the results attained, the method utilised and the theories employed are relevant for assessing the types of interpretation people are likely to make when reading and listening to other biblical stories. Because the research encompasses a literary issue and concerns the processes that are used in communication, the approach adopted is a literary one and the methodology incorporates media criticism and audience criticism. Other techniques, such as narrative criticism, rhetorical criticism, and reader response criticism are utilised extensively in the various analyses and assessments. The ten studies are preceded in the thesis by data as to the processes people use in reading texts and in listening to non-reciprocal speech. Such data includes information relating to experiments and studies into the communicative processes that have been carried out over the past fifty years. There is also data as to the theories that have been developed by scholars based on the results of such experiments and studies. These are the theories that are used in this thesis. There are also several analyses in the thesis which collectively demonstrate that texts used in Church liturgies should be those that have been specifically translated to meet the needs of listeners. This is a very important issue, because, even in very literate communities, there are still more Christians who listen to biblical texts being read than those who read such texts for themselves.

The Mid America Regional Council, (MARC) is the official metropolitan planning organization for the Greater Kansas City region. MARC received a 4.25 million dollar grant from the US Department of Housing and Urban Development in 2010 to advance the region’s vision of sustainability through vibrant, green, and connected centers and corridors. From which the CSP (Creating Sustainable Places) initiative was established. Responding to this initiative, eight grant funded Kansas State University students worked in a Rock Island Corridor group. This group showed and described ways of achieving MARC’s and the US Department of Housing and Urban Development’s goals through the development of Master’s Reports. Reports include design ideas and proposals which MARC and city planning departments might not have developed otherwise. Student collaboration between public and city planning departments informed the development of student ideas. Green trail systems and tourism specifically addresses how the quality of life in the Kansas City Metro Area could be enhanced with the implementation of a cultural trail network. This network would provide access to the Rock Island Corridor, create greenspaces, and establish mixed-use housing districts for potential home and business owners. The Greater Kansas City region population is increasing. Trails, parks, and mixed-use buildings for residents in KC could improve the quality of life for future residents. Adding greenspaces, pedestrian mobility, and entertainment districts in which to find region specific activities could help attract people to redeveloping areas. Green trail systems and tourism’s project area is located between the Sprint Center and the Truman Sports Complex. To resolve problems and dilemmas within this region of Kansas City, a routing plan of a cultural trail network is outlined. This cultural trail features new trail heads, cultural centers, and proposed zoning overlays for park developments and mixed-use housing districts. The trail network created connects the Sprint Center and Truman Sports Complex in Kansas City, Missouri as a tourism link. Tourism destinations and historic sites add to the economic success of KC. Sites are connected to in the routing plan for the cultural trail. This proposal shows one approach for creating sustainable centers in KC.

Imad, Fadel. "Green Relationship." VCU Scholars Compass, 2014. http://scholarscompass.vcu.edu/etd/3465.

Full text
Abstract:
Green Relationship is a design solution attempting to raise awareness toward the environment and reduce consumerism. Waste generation and pollution have become major concerns of many governments, municipalities, organizations and individuals around the world since they are affecting human wellbeing and the environment. As an MFA student with VCUQatar, I chose to use design to contribute in protecting the environment hoping to make a difference in life. The thesis includes a research and a design component. The research explores the recycling programs and facilities in Qatar, the governmental and private sector actions toward waste generation and collection, as well as precedent solutions applied around the world. Furthermore, it includes a survey on recycling to gather and analyze the community’s feed back in order to come up with a solution that aims to change people’s behavior toward waste generation and to promote green lifestyle. The design component defines the Green Relationship as the personal connection between the individual and the silent partner, “the environment.” It fulfills the basic survival needs, “food and water,” and the one and only independency need, “oxygen.” The elements of the Green Relationship are the projection of the generic relationships elements we know of through the theory of “Humimicing” that I introduce in my thesis. Humimicing is the design theory that mimics human innate attributes and behaviors to develop design concepts to be applied in different industries. Every element of the Green Relationship is visualized through a different design discipline similar to its nature. Therefore, interactive, product and critical designs are the mediums used to represent Green Communication, Care and Ethics respectively through public installation, experimentation and conceptual design definition. The thesis methodology, which is “Make it Personal,” concludes in creating the Green Relationship that aims to change the behavior of individuals and ultimately to reach out to the wider community. Under the maxim, “Green is not just a color; it is a Lifestyle,” the thesis promotes the use of design to inspire people, designers and manufacturers to consume less and generate less waste in order to save natural resources and the environment.

Abstract:
This research study focuses on providing evidence that indicates that, making use of contemporary green building practices within a low cost subsidised housing project have more social, economical as well as environmental benefits than that of a conventional, non-green approach. Low cost subsidised housing units have become an everyday sight in the light of the global as well as the local economy. The increasing levels of unemployment and subsequent social problems lead to growing needs for this form of housing. As these projects consume a number of resources, steps need be taken to lighten the load – such as the carbon emissions - that is put on the environment. According to the United Nations, the key areas that are influenced by sustainability are environmental, economical as well as social. In South Africa, a number of government as well as local policies exist that regulates the planning and building practices of the low cost subsidised housing projects. These policies have been used as a foundation for this study. This study focuses on the Lufhereng project as a case study, and technology used in the Kuyasa as well as Cosmo City developments furthermore assisted in the groundwork for the comparison between the different construction approaches. The challenges facing the utilisation of a contemporary green building approach were researched, identified, discussed and recommendations were made. SAM (social accounting matrix) multiplier analysis on the Gauteng SAM obtained from the DBSA (Development Bank of South Africa), analysis and comparison of existing data as well as a qualitative questionnaire that was sent to industry stakeholders were utilised to obtain relevant information. The quantitative as well as qualitative data obtained from the primary as well as secondary research indicated that there are a number of aspects which has an influence on method of construction used in subsidised low cost housing units. The findings from literature as well as empirical research were analysed and discussed accordingly. Recommendations and suggestions regarding strategies that may be followed to increase the use of contemporary green approaches in these projects were made. These recommendations were based on the findings from literature as well as the research conducted for this study. The use of contemporary green approaches are vital for the social, economic as well as environmental sustainability of the country, and thus, ultimately of the world as a whole. It is, in this light, imperative that everything in our power should be done to preserve our resources by any means possible.

Abstract:
Doutoramento em Ciências do Mar e do Ambiente
The majority of benthic marine invertebrates display complex life cycles characterized by life stages with contrasting features. These organisms commonly exhibit a dispersive pelagic larval form(s) that experiences a dramatic event that shifts its morphology and behaviour – the metamorphosis. This event gives origin to a benthic juvenile stage that may also experience additional changes in its morphology, behaviour and physiology until reaching the adult stage and becoming sexually mature. The path between hatching and settlement is a challenging one that only a minute fraction of individuals overcomes. Unravelling the processes that condition the life history strategies and settlement success of benthic marine invertebrates is essential to understand the shaping of adult populations, as well as ecological and evolutionary pathways. In this regard, the present thesis analyses important stages in the life history of a model benthic marine invertebrate with a complex life cycle: the embryonic development, larval settlement and early benthic performance of the green crab Carcinus maenas. The first part of this thesis analyses maternal effects as a source of variability in offspring quality, using biochemical tools. It explores the hypothetical existence of embryonic variability as a consequence of their positioning within the brooding chamber at oviposition and during embryogenesis. Fatty acid profiles of embryos in early (stage 1) and late (stage 3) stages are used as proxies to analyse maternal provisioning and larval quality at hatching, respectively. Through a lipidomic approach, the embryogenesis of C. maenas and Necora puber, two closely related brachyuran crabs that occur in sympatry in the study site, is compared. Polar lipid dynamics is unravelled for the first time in these ecologically and economically important species. Finally, two different time scales, annual and seasonal, are employed to investigate the existence of temporal variability in offspring quality, with the role that maternal size may play as another source of variability also being investigated. The second part of this thesis focus in the early benthic life of juvenile C. maenas. Wild megalopae collected in Ria de Aveiro are used to understand how the pelagic life experienced by developing larvae before becoming competent (receptive to settlement cues) can condition their early benthic life. Competent larvae are exposed to extreme abiotic and trophic conditions to comprehend how their phenotypic plasticity and potential carry-over effects influence consecutive life stages. The part of the study addressing maternal effects revealed that C. maenas did not present any significant within brood variability in newly extruded (stage 1) and ready to hatch (stage 3) embryos. Therefore, maternal provisioning and the incubation environment within the brooding chamber were homogeneous across the whole brood. Nevertheless, a highresolution lipidomic analysis showed that embryogenesis is a dynamic process, suggesting a specialization of lipid functions along the embryonic development. Moreover, maternal provisioning and incubation environment were not influenced by maternal size. Nonetheless, the lipid composition of the yolk was conditioned by the period in which the ovarian maturation occurred. While the environmental conditions prevailing during the incubation altered the fatty acid profile of the ready to hatch embryos. After experiencing a planktonic life, competent larvae displayed different post-settlement performance, clearly reflecting the pelagic conditions that they have experienced during their larval life. Optimal grow-out conditions did not delete these larval fingerprints, with their consequences being carried-over to early benthic life and conditioning the phenotype of juvenile crabs. Larval life plays such an important role in the life history of benthic marine invertebrates that even exposure during a few days to extreme abiotic and trophic conditions can influence their post-settlement performance. Overall, metamorphosis is definitely not a new beginning for C. maenas. In fact, the early postmetamorphosis performance of this brachyuran crab can be strongly conditioned by trait mediated effects that are carried over from its embryonic and/or pelagic larval life to its benthic juvenile and/or adult stages.

Abstract:
Baltimore is part of the big American metropolises committed in a race for sustainable development. Traditionally a democratic stronghold, with a majority of city dwellers who are poor Afro-Americans, and harshly battered by the industrial crisis and the economic recession, Baltimore City is the perfect laboratory for urban planning projects experimenting sustainable development. Furthermore, with regard to its economic and demographic characteristics and the importance of segregation in the city, the social dimension of sustainable development and the issue of environmental justice are at stake. Since 2000, the Mayor and the City Council initiated two ambitious projects integrating the various aspects of sustainable development (« sustainability », « livability » and « smart growth »), which are all belonging to « green politics ». These efforts are focused on East Baltimore and West Baltimore, two huge ghettos surrounding the financial district in the downtown area. The core of our analysis concerns two projects of green politics (the rehabilitation of a part of the East Baltimore ghetto through the Grand Piano; the Red Line, a train connecting the ghettos, some industrial wastelands and the Central Business District). Through these examples, we will put under study the types of urban governance and urban regimes at work, and the role played by the different stakeholders (« anchor institutions », philanthropic foundations, public actors and neighborhood associations). New forms of citizenship may appear with unheard modes of participation to sustainable urban planning. Sustainable development may be an opportunity to improve the living conditions in the ghetto and fight against poverty and social and environmental injustices. The seamy side of the story may be a racialization of sustainable development nourishing gentrification, creating new forms of segregation and bringing about the death of the ghettos

de, Caussin Dylan Robert. "Design and Testing of a Top Mask Projection Ceramic Stereolithography System for Ceramic Part Manufacturing." DigitalCommons@CalPoly, 2016. https://digitalcommons.calpoly.edu/theses/1625.

Full text
Abstract:
Ceramic manufacturing is an expensive process with long lead times between the initial design and final manufactured part. This limits the use of ceramic as a viable material unless there is a large project budget or high production volume associated with the part. Ceramic stereolithography is an alternative to producing low cost parts through the mixing of a photo curable resin and ceramic particles. This is an additive manufacturing process in which each layer is built upon the previous to produce a green body that can be sintered for a fully dense ceramic part. This thesis introduces a new approach to ceramic stereolithography with a top mask projection light source which is much more economical compared to current vector scanning methods. The research goes through the design and development of a stereolithography printer prototype capable of handling ceramics and the testing of different mixtures to provide the best printing results with varying viscosities. The initial testing of this printer has created a starting point for top mask projection as an economical alternative to current ceramic manufacturing techniques.

Abstract:
The green aromas family includes in red wines a large diversity of nuances. First, this study revealed that these nuances are not directly related to known compounds (e.g. 2-méthoxy-3-alkylpyrazines, C6 alcohols). After a sensory definition, the molecular determinants of these aroma nuances were investigated based on fractionation strategies including HPLC and vacuum distillation then MDGC-O-MS. A first source of nuances associated with grapes ripeness was developed. The presence of 1,8-cineole (eucalyptol) with a varietal origin was evidenced in Cabernet Sauvignon wines. The ability of a grape variety to produce significant amounts (Fer Servadou) and an exogenous origin associated with the presence of Artemisia species in vineyards (Artemisia verlotiorum) were also highlighted. Another origin, related to the pressing of grape marc was then considered. This study shown the connection between the aromatic category of press wines and the green aromas. Furthermore, it revealed the presence of odoriferous molecules including (Z)-4-heptenol, with a sensory contribution, associated to the increase of pressure in the press tank, but not for the majority of C6 alcohols. It also suggested the involvement of several carbonyl compounds in the characteristic odor of press wines. The influence of technological parameters (without oxygen, pressure, SO2, malolactic fermentation) was also specified. Finally, this study revealed the presence of methyl salicylate as a plant defense marker against several fungal diseases (downy mildew, black rot, esca) and as a contributor to fresh green aromas of certain red wines

This dissertation offers an exegesis of Mark 4. 35 41, Jesus Stills a Storm . Towards that goal, it starts with a critical survey of the current Quest for the Historical Jesus in dialogue with Cultural History, Microhistory and Historical Psychology, with the aim of raising relevant issues pertaining mythical narratives as well as their inherent value for our historical knowledge. From the literary mapping of the Greek Magical Papyri, and from evidence stemming from Qumran s Self Glorification Hymn , as well as the Old Testament and the later rabbinical texts arise fundamental parallels that are critical for our understanding of said narrative. Thus, the exegesis of our pericope sheds light on the elements of power, fear and mythical identity present in the narrative.(AU)

Abstract:
Laodicea-on-Sea, is the modern Lattakia located on the north Mediterranean coast of Syria. This city played an important role since it was founded by Seleucus Ie, this role mostly consisted of his coinage. The monetary history of Laodicea started 300 BC with the coinage type of Alexander the Great. Later on, municipal issues have emerged during the reign of Antiochus IV and Alexander Bala. Laodicea, after the year 82/81 struck a large number of civic tetradrachms. It has retained its role during the imperial era, and has experienced a golden age when it became the capital instead of Antioch in 194 AD. It became a colony during 198 AD under Septimius Severus. The latest coinage issue of Laodicea was made during the reign of Trebonianus Gallus (251-253 AD.) The first step of our study consists on developing a chronological corpus of the different series and monetary issues and on studying the coins. The second step of our work is on the coinage study and the pace of production and circulation of the coins. The last part of our thesis studies the history of Laodicea in the Hellenistic and Roman periods through the classical sources, the Greek and Latin inscriptions of the city that have been discovered, as well as the archaeological findings from the excavations in Lattakia and from its coinage

Abstract:

Abstract:
Monomethylmercury formation, the neurotoxic form of mercury, is mainly linked to anaerobic microbial activity. In order to assess the relative contribution of several microbial compartments (biofilms, raw water and sediment) we evaluated methylation of samples from ponds of temperate area (Lorraine, France) and from subarctic ponds (Nunavik, Quebec). Biofilms were not found to specifically promote mercury methylation, whereas sediment emerges as the main compartment involved in mercury methylation. The formation of methylmercury is positively linked to the temperature and to nutrients. Thus, by increasing the open water period, the water temperature and of the microbial activity, current climate changes may turn these ponds in preferential location for mercury methylation in the subarctic ecosystem. Finally, the reactivity of green rust, a mineral which can be produced by bacterial activity of environmental biofilms, may compete with mercury methylation by reducing HgII into Hg0

Abstract:
Thesis (MA (English Studies))--University of Stellenbosch, 2009.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Texts by women travellers describing their journeys date back almost as far as those produced by their male counterparts, yet women’s travel writing has only become an area of academic interest during the past ten to fifteen years. Previously, women’s travel writing was mostly read for its entertainment value rather than its academic merit and – as Sara Mills notes in her Discourses of Difference – appeared almost exclusively in the form of coffee table books or biographies offering romanticized accounts of heroic, eccentric women who undertook epic journeys to Africa (4). The growing interest in women’s travel writing as part of colonial discourse coincides with the emergence of gender studies and related subjects. The emergence of these areas of academic enquiry can be attributed to the systematic dismantling of the patriarchal structures, which previously dominated social and academic domains. The aim of this study is to examine European women’s travel writing as a subversive discourse which, while sharing some characteristics with traditional male-produced travel texts from the colonial era, was informed by the discursive constraints of femininity. These texts thus differ from male-produced texts in the sense that, because of the different discursive constraints informing women’s travel writing, they offer commentary on aspects of Africa and its peoples which men had omitted in their travel accounts. Three specific texts by British women who recorded their travels in Africa form the basis of the discussion in this dissertation: the travel writing of Lady Anne Barnard (South African Cape Colony, 1797 – 1801), Mary Kingsley (West Africa: Gabon and the Congo, 1896 – 1900) and Barbara Greene (Liberia, 1935). Since, as Mills argues, “feminist textual theory has restricted itself to the analysis of literary texts and has been concerned with analysis of the text itself” (12), which limits the extent to which one can provide interesting, discerning, and relevant comment on women’s writing, the readings of these texts are not limited to feminist theory of women’s travel writing. Social expectations until as recently as the early twentieth century located women firmly in the domestic sphere. It was almost unthinkable for women to undertake travels other than the traditional Grand Tour. To attempt to venture into the predominantly male territory of travel writing was to expose oneself to harsh criticism and to risk being labelled as eccentric and unfeminine. Thus women had to find a way of making both their travels and writing seem acceptable by social standards, while still presenting as true as possible a picture of Africa in their writing. These constraints of the discourse of femininity on their texts necessarily make women’s writing seem concerned almost exclusively with matters of feminine interest. Mills attributes this to women travel writers’ “problematic status, caught between the conflicting demands of the discourse of femininity and that of imperialism.” (Mills, Discourses of Difference 22)
Mills voer aan: “Feminist textual theory has restricted itself to the analysis of literary texts and has been concerned with analysis of the text itself” (12). Mills skryf dít toe aan vroue-reisbeskrywers se “problematic status, caught between the conflicting demands of the discourse of femininity and that of imperialism.” (Mills, Discourses of Difference 22)

Abstract:
The thesis deals with the representation of political power in Dante's Paradiso. The first chapter focuses on the character of the emperor Justinian, the author of the Corpus legislative body (a restoration of Roman law), whom Dante encounters in Mercury's sky. The chapter underlines the importance of the emperor's narrative on Roman history, which reveals Dante's political vision of history, centered on the central role of the Empire. Then it draws a parallelism between Justinian and Dante, as both the characters aim at earthly glory and are inspired by God's inspiration at the same time, since both their works have political targets. Finally there is a connection between Justinian word's regarding the translation of the imperial capital from Rome to Byzantium made by Constantine, and the Church's sacrilegious translation to Avignon, contemporary to Dante and the composition of the poem. The second chapter deals with the figure of Charles Martel, whom Dante encounters in Venus's sky as a symbol of love and charity. These are political virtues necessary to the well-being of the imperial system conceived by Dante. Through the words of Charles Martel, the poet marks a contrast between this blessed spirit and his living brother Robert Anjou, king of Naples at the moment of the composition of the poem, whom Dante despises both as enemy of the Empire and as a monarch who lacks those skills which are necessary to rule a kingdom. Charles Martel critics the brother's greed and incompetence, showing how his vices are the opposite of the ideal political model conceived by the Florentine poet. The third chapter describes the encounter with the ancestor Cacciaguida, among the militant spirits of Mars. The words of the ancestor mark the contrast between the XII˙century Florence in which he lived, when aristocratic families lived in peace and harmony, and the contemporary XIV˙century Florence, rebellious to the authority of the Empire and marked by greed, moral decay and bloody conflicts. The last chapter deals with the eagle, symbol of the Empire, which Dante sees in Jupiter's sky. The chapter focuses on the role of the eagle as an emblem of political justice, considering its harsh criticism of the anti-Christian nature of the contemporary pope John XXII and of contemporary European monarchs who promote wars and disorder. In the end the chapter focuses on the spirits placed on the eagle's eye, as historical representative rulers who promoted God's justice according also to the central role of the Empire in Dante's political thought.

Abstract:
Th e main theme of this dissertation is the Roman gastronomical poetry, since its origins in the pre-classic period until Horace’s Satires 2.4 and 2.8. The concept of “Roman gastronomical poetry” is based on the studies on Greek gastronomical poetry by Enzo Degani, who established two main tendences, namely, the “didactic” one (e.g., Archestratus) and the “ekphrastic” one (e.g., Matro of Pitane). Nevertheless, the first chapter covers other authors of di.erents genres, such as Annanius and Hipponax (jambus), or Epicharmus, Aristophanes, Eubulus and Alexis (comedy). Roman authors of the archaic period are studied in detail: Ennius, Lucilius and Varro. Many critical issues affect their texts due to their fragmentary condition. Finally, Horace’s satires 2.4 and 2.8 are studied taking into account the tradition of the gastronomical poetry as reviewed in the precedent chapters. Other issues, such as the concept of "σπουδαιογέλοιον"or the metapoetic interpretation of these satires are analized as well.

Positioned between writing and drawing, the diagram is proposed by John Berger as an alternative strategy for articulating encounters with landscape. A diagrammatic approach offers a schematic vocabulary that can compress time and offer a spatial reading of information. Situated within the contemporary field of direct data visualisation, my practice-led research interprets Berger’s ‘Field’ essay as a guide to producing four field | studies within a suburban park in Canberra. My seasonal investigations demonstrate how applying the conventions of the pictorial list, dot-distribution map, routing diagram and colour-wheel reveals subtle ecological and biographical narratives.

Abstract:

This study is aimed to evaluate the fulfillment and satisfaction of green building design indexes and the promotion strategy of introducing green design based on the results of questionnaire survey. Research results indicate that (1) for “green building design indexes”, environmental forestation index requirement is easily achieved and water resource index requirement has highest satisfaction; (2) for “cost-effect evaluation of green buildings”, daily energy-saving is most costly item to be achieved, extra permissible building floor area given to encourage owner to accept green design and the effect of energy-saving and carbon reduction are the effective motivations to promote green buildings, in addition, environmental forestation, water saving and retention represent environmental and ecological advantages which would promote company reputation and satisfy the customers; (3) for “introduction of green design and application”, insufficient knowledge about green design would inhibit the promotion of green buildings, which effect could be diminished by increasing government subsidy, strengthening communication with building owners and marketing green design concept;(4) for “effects affecting the architect’s intention to accept green design, most architects would like to design buildings which have green characteristics such as water retention, carbon reduction, improvement of waste water and garbage treatments and indoor healthy environment.

Recently, the consumers are paying more attention to a product’s impact on the environment. The Green Mark can mitigate information asymmetry between producers and consumers over the environmental attributes of products. Thus, it is worth exploring that whether the customers are willing to pay a premium for Green Mark products. Focusing on detergents, the study apply Contingent Valuation method (CVM), which is used to measure the values of non-market products to estimate consumers’ willingness to pay (WTP) for the Green Mark product. Besides, the paper examines the factors affecting their WTP. Moreover, the Green Mark certifies that a product is environmentally friendly and that health considerations have been taken. However, it is unsure whether Green Mark products are chosen for environment issue or for perceived health-related concerns. Thus, we also compare the WTP for Green Mark products’ environmental attributes with for its health benefits in the study. The empirical results show that for consumers who are less environmentally aware, the higher WTP for Green Mark products’ environmental attributes and its health benefits. Furthermore, the higher consumers’ perceived level of subjective norm, the lower WTP for Green Mark products’ environmental attributes and its health benefits. Besides, the negative relationship between consumers’ perceived level of subjective norm and the WTP for Green Mark products’ environmental attributes and its health benefits is mitigated if the consumers are more environmentally conscious. Finally, the average WTP for Green Mark products’ environmental attributes is 107 NT, and for health benefits is 135 NT. According to the results, this research find that consumers are more willing to pay extra money on avoiding harm to health attribute rather than environmental protection attribute in Taiwan.

Abstract Since the wastage created by laptops is more deeply concerned, various countries have established a system of controlling the pollution to the environment as a prerequisite, and agreed to start from the manufacturing point of view, strictly demanding to begin with the selection of Green mark components, so as to control the laptop wastage effectively, and to construct a society based on the protection of the environment and resources. Thus, the best solution is emphasized on how to reduce the wastage effectively and keep up with the recycling program, in addition to pushing forward the substantial meaning and value of Green mark on environmental protection. With the research of the technical literature, the true meaning of Green Consumption and Green mark has been discovered. The objective of this research is the consumer’s recognition on Green mark components, in order to induce the level of influence on the will of purchasing laptop facilities. This research utilized the questionnaire survey based on quantification, and with the cross analysis to probe deeply into the level of recognition of Green mark laptops from different age groups. The result obtained from compiling the above mentioned research methods is as follows: With the cross analysis on various age groups, it can be seen that the consumer group with older age and are married presents a direct proportional relationship with the recognition for the purchase of Green mark laptops. For maintaining the environment resources, the goal of the green building is the design in of the pursuing of the endurable development of the environment .In Taiwan, in order to reduce the impact on the environment while the urban and the buildings were developed. Ministry of the Interior issued “Energy Saving” article in 1995,activated the” The Scientific & Technical Plan for Green Building and Living Environment” in1997, issued ”The Evaluation Manual for Green Building”in1999.Executive Yuan issued “The Promotion Program of Green Building” in2001.In 2003,this program will be formally included into the ”Challenge 2008-The National Development Plan”. Currently, the development of the green building for central government office buildings already stepped into the implementation stage in Taiwan. In order to facilitate the implementation of the” green building label” system, this study focused on the status of the implementation of the label domestically and the study of the promotion strategies of the green building label system to provide a reference in the future. First of all, the information relevant to the green building label system were collected both from abroad and domestic. This study found out the domestic problems concerning the promotion of the green building label system. Then, referred to the policy tools, practice mechanism and promotion strategies taken by the Europe America and Japan regions and reviewed the current green building label system and the performing effectiveness of the 9 evaluation indicators system in Taiwan. Abstract:
Objectives: The lack of oxygen in regions of many solid tumours has been shown to promote metastasis and genomic instability and is also associated with poor response to radiotherapy and some chemotherapy agents. The goal of this thesis was to develop and characterize a mouse xenograft tumour model that could be used to rapidly identify viable hypoxic cells. This model could then be applied in subsequent studies to evaluate therapies directed towards eradicating these resistant cells. Methods: A hypoxia reporter plasmid was constructed and transfected into SiHa human cervical carcinoma cells. The plasmid contained four hypoxia response elements (HRE's) upstream from the herpes simplex virus thymidine kinase promoter that was used to drive expression of the gene for green fluorescent protein (GFP). Upregulation of hypoxia inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α) was measured using Western blotting, and fluorescence activated cell sorting was used to verify that GFP expressing cells were resistant to radiation and able to bind the hypoxia marker pimonidazole. Results: SiHa cells showed increased expression of HIF-1α under hypoxic conditions. SiHa tumour cells were transfected and selected for their ability to express GFP under hypoxic conditions. Frozen sections showed that GFP expression was maximum for cells distant from tumour blood vessels. Cells sorted on the basis of high levels of GFP fluorescence were more resistant to killing by ionizing radiation, consistent with the known radioresistance of hypoxic tumour cells. Highly GFP positive tumour cells also bound significantly higher levels of the hypoxia marker pimonidazole. Conclusions: A stable human tumour cell transfectant was identified that preferentially expressed green fluorescent protein under hypoxic conditions. Cell sorting confirmed that highly GFP positive cells were more radioresistant and more likely to bind a hypoxia marker. Future studies could use this model and other hypoxia driven gene constructs for hypoxic cell killing.

Issues of the environmental protection have attracted worldwide attention in recent fifty years, of course including Taiwan. This study tries to find out the relationship between the adoption of green mark and its impacts on manufacturers’ overall performance in Taiwan. Many reports pointed out that the eco-labeling can improve the market and affect the manufacturers’ cost, operating, sales and financial efficiencies. Also, the eco-labeling, which is held and named as “green mark” in Taiwan, is aimed at telling the consumers which kinds of products are better and more friendly for the environment, such as saving energy and water, reusing resource and decreasing the pollution. The eco-labeling is a part of ISO 14000. Its related standards are recorded in ISO 14020. The system of ISO 14020 establishes the basic common rules, while the details may be different for different countries or organizations. Thus, in this study we focus on the “green mark”, which has been recently introduced in Taiwan and try to investigate the current situation and affects on manufacturers of its adoption.

Green production focusing on low pollution, energy efficient and high efficacy has been a popular movement in the modern society that is pro-environment. Production of the “Green Mark” products could be beneficial to the corporations by increasing their corporate image, competitiveness, and profit. It also provides opportunities to consumers for fighting global warming by purchasing the “Green Mark” products. This study used Likert questionnaires to investigate the public awareness of “Green Mark” products in wholesale stores. A total of 202 valid questionnaires were obtained. The results showed that 95% of the interviewees had seen “Green Mark” and its associated products before. 98.5% of them knew the proper definition of the “Green Mark” products. In demographic analysis on the correlation of purchasing the green mark products, females were more likely to purchase green mark products under the influence of “discount” compared to males (p=.035). Interviewees at age 50 or over were attracted by “packaging and style” of the green mark products (p<.05). People who works in the service industry like the feature of “green mark products at the same price of regular products” (p<.05). In addition, consumer exhibits a positive correlation between “the intention of purchasing green mark product” and “action of purchasing green mark product (p<.001). In summary, this survey shows the consumers in general are aware of green mark and its associated products. They also demonstrate their willingness of purchasing. Thus, the green mark product suppliers should continue to bring in more green mark products and make available to the public. Furthermore, our findings in demographic analysis could be applied in designing the product promotion and incentives packages for public by government and companies. The consumers will welcome the variety and wide selection of green mark products in their daily lives. Such positive correlation will lead to a win-win situation where the companies are more than happy to bring in even more green mark products.

Carbon dioxide emissions and ecological damage have been dramatically increasing for the past few decades. According to International Energy Agency (IEA), the emissions have reached 31 billion tons in 2011. Facing the thorny issue, Taiwan’s Environmental Protection Administration (EPA) has been actively promoting various environmental protection policies. Launched in 1992, Taiwan’s eco-label, as is called “Green Mark”, aims to promote green products manufacturing among manufacturers and to encourage green consumptions in local market. The purpose of this study is to explore the influential factors of manufacturer’s decisions to apply for Green Mark. A total of 315 manufacturers were contacted to fill out the questionnaire in this study and 172 of them returned the questionnaire. KMO (Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin) test and Bartlett’s Test of Sphericity were used to test fitness of factor analysis. Analyzed results showed that 27 out of 39 questions and five factors were considered as valid indexes. These five factors are Green Mark identity, Green Mark benefits, corporate social responsibility, Green Mark application process, and Green Mark application system. Reliability test Cronbach’s value is 0.923 and 67.267% of variance was explained, which indicates that our designed questionnaire is valid in terms of construct validity and reliable. 90% manufactures have consensuses about the use of Green Mark as an identification and it is important that corporate takes charge of its corporate social responsibility. However, the consensuses about the ease use of Green Mark application process and Green Mark application system are much lower. Additionally, manufacturers consider the Green Mark recertification processes to be too complicated and may negatively affect their decisions to reapply Green Mark.

Based on ‘Theory of Planned Behavior’, the study integrated literature review, ‘Global Warming Activism’ claimed by Lubell et al. (2007) and Olson’s (1965) ‘Theory of Collective Action’ and developed into a ‘Collective Theory of Planned Behavior’. The main purpose of the study was to explore and understand the public’s behavioral model of purchasing green mark products for fighting against global warming issue and alleviating global warming. The subject of the study was the public of the five counties and cities in central Taiwan, and were stratified and randomly sampled out. A total of 960 copies of questionnaire were sent out and 694 copies returned. The recovery rate was 72.3%, and Cronbach α was 0.925. The important results are shown as follows: The overall behavioral model of consumers’ purchasing green mark products for fighting against global warming shows a well fit model. The model shows that cognition has significant effect on attitude; attitude remarkably affects selective costs and collective interest. Attitude, selective costs and collective interest positively and significantly affects behavioral intention. Behavioral intention has positive and remarkable effect on behavior; as well as behavior positively and significantly affects action. In this study, when analyzing the anti global warming behavior pattern of consumers in Central Taiwan with purchasing of eco-labeled products, by adding ‘rational attitude’ variables to the model will help enhance the explanatory power of ‘anti warming behavior pattern’ with respect to behavior intention, behavior and action, from which measured values have respectively increased from 42%, 62%, 75% to 60%, 64%, 79%. Affective attitude is the most influential factor having direct effect on behavioral intention in the model, and the next factor is collective interest, and the next is selective costs. The total effect and direct effect of attitude on behavioral intention are 0.65 and 0.36, respectively. It is shown that the behavior of the public who buy green mark products will be influenced at the same time by the affective attitude and rational attitude. Furthermore, the behavioral model of the public having bought green mark products for fighting against global warming have a higher awareness, the more positive attitudes, behaviors and actions, and more willing to pay the price and bear interpersonal conflicts than the others who have never bought. The affective attitude of the public having bought has significant effect on behavioral intention, but relatively not be affected by rational attitudes. Otherwise, the public who have never bought relatively provide priority consideration to self selective benefits and collective interests, measure the selective costs, and are more rational relatively.

Abstract:

An understanding of a species’ population ecology can be used to determine the impacts of threatening processes and to estimate the probability of local extinction. For this thesis I estimated the major demographic rates of a population of the green and golden bell frog through the use of mark recapture studies at Sydney Olympic Park, Australia. Through the analysis of historic and contemporaneous data we found that the mitigation of habitat destruction with habitat offset resulted in no net loss and an approximate 2-fold increase in population size. However, this required the construction of 19 times the amount of pond area than was destroyed. Females were detected less frequently during surveys suggesting they may have a smaller population than males. Analysis that included capture probability indicated that this difference was because females were more difficult to detect and the sex ratio was near parity. Mark recapture also estimated low survival, high recruitment and rapid growth of post-metamorphic frogs. Additionally, survival and recruitment were found to be highly variable which resulted in variable population sizes. Growth rate also varied on a spatial scale which may suggest a difference in productivity in different areas. This demographic information was used to construct a model of population viability with sensitivity analyses. The high variability in demographic rates resulted in highly variable predictions of population size, with a 42% chance of extinction over 100 years. Sensitivity analysis predicted that the probability of extinction was most sensitive to changes in female survival with male survival and growth rate also having considerable impact. We then ran a posthoc experiment to validate an assumption that the recruitment rate was not density dependent by increasing the survival of females over the winter. We found that breeding of mature females was not restricted by density dependent factors, which was in concordance with the population viability model. Together, these results have expanded the knowledge of the population ecology of this species which should induce targeted management actions to female survival and improve habitat offset programs through knowledge that such programs require substantial offset ratios. The use of these findings should therefore provide better conservation outcomes for the species as a whole.

However, the percentage of hotels that adopt the eco-labels is very low in Taiwan when compared to other developed countries such as Switzerland. This paper attempts to identify the factors that may prevent Taiwanese hoteliers from adopting Taiwan Green Mark. The finding is that eco-label adoption rate may depend on specific details of pertinent environmental conditions. In particular, the presence of or absence of similar established standards has impact on the chances of an eco-label system establishing itself as an industry standard, which in turn influences the hoteliers’ decisions on eco-label adoption. The paper also analyzes the Taiwanese hoteliers’ approach to addressing global trends in sustainability. The author conducted in-depth interviews with a sample of 10 hotels and used grounded theory methodology in this qualitative research. The author seeks to understand managerial perceptions of sustainable hospitality by evaluating their current management practices on the four dimensions of: (1) Sustainability, (2) Economic & Social, (3) Environment, and (4) Cultural & Heritage. The study results indicate that Taiwan hoteliers’ main sustainability initiatives remain focused on environmental dimensions such as water and energy conservation measures and 3R methods (Recycle, Reuse and Reduce). The motivations of hoteliers in Taiwan to adopt sustainable hospitality practices primarily consist of cost savings, compliance, and legitimacy issues in response to government’s environmental impact assessments.
