Abstract:
This chapter looks at green business between the 1930s and the 1950s, when most policy-makers, voters, and consumers had little interest in the natural environment. It considers organic food, natural beauty, wind and solar energy, and architecture. This was a very challenging period for green entrepreneurship. Wind and solar were wholly unable to compete with conventional fuels. Most consumers had little interest in organic food or cosmetic products using plants rather than chemical ingredients. Ecological architects had few clients. The figures considered here all worked on the margins of the business world—some were downright eccentric—and they achieved little towards legitimizing their alternative views in the eyes of consumers and others. Yet in retrospect they were laying foundations for the future.

Full text
Abstract:
This interdisciplinary book, which takes its origin from an international conference held in Oxford, brings together experts in ancient Greek (and Roman) history, literature, archaeology, and religion. It is about ancient Greek returns and returning, chiefly—but by no means only—of mythical Greek heroes from Troy. One main, and certainly the most ‘marked’, ancient Greek word for ‘return’ is nostos, plural nostoi, as in the English derivative ‘nostalgia’. The nostos theme runs through Greek literature (prose and poetic) and history from Homer’s Odyssey to Lykophron’s Alexandra, and nostoi were archaeologically and epigraphically commemorated. nostos-related traditions were important ingredients of colonial foundation myths, and helped to define Greek ethnicity, and to crystallize personal and communal identities: two chapters are concerned in different ways with emotions and personal identity, making use of the theoretical tool of place attachment. The special problems and vocabulary of exile are explored in the long Introduction. One chapter shows that failed nostoi can be more interesting than successful ones. Evidential absence (notably that of women) can be as important and illuminating as presence: mythical women are the main subject of another chapter, and they feature extensively in several more. The chapters in this book explore both literary and material evidence so as to achieve a better understanding of the nature of Greek settlement in the Mediterranean zone, and of Greek and Roman perceptions of home, displacement, and returning.

Abstract:
This chapter details the events leading up to the end of Friday Night Fights. The reasons for the end read like the ingredients for disaster: some greed, some overexposure, some crime, some death, some changes in audience taste. By the time Indio fought Griffith for the title, the writing was on the wall. Before charting the final lurches into the abyss for both TV boxing and Gaspar's career, some ominous developments are examined, including the Justice Department's filing of a civil antitrust suit in 1955 claiming that the International Boxing Club violated the Sherman Antitrust Act, and the Justice Department's operation to take down the “underworld commissioner” of boxing, Mr. Gray himself.

Sicker, Martin. The Pre-Islamic Middle East. Praeger, 2000. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9798216000464.

Full text
Abstract:
Sicker explores the political history of the Middle East from antiquity to the Arab conquest from a geopolitical perspective. He argues that there are a number of relatively constant environmental factors that have helpedcondition-not determine-the course of Middle Eastern political history from ancient times to the present. These factors, primarily, but not exclusively geography and topography, contributed heavily to establishing the patterns of state development and interstate relations in the Middle East that have remained remarkably consistent throughout the troubled history of the region. In addition to geography and topography, the implications of which are explored in depth, religion has also played a major political role in conditioning the pattern of Middle Eastern history. The Greeks first introduced the politicization of religious belief into the region in the form of pan-Hellenism, which essentially sought to impose Greek forms of popular religion and culture on the indigenous peoples of the region as a means of solidifying Greek political control. This ultimately led to religious persecution as a state policy. Subsequently, the Persian Sassanid Empire adopted Zoroastrianism as the state religion for the same purpose and with the same result. Later, when Armenia adopted Christianity as the state religion, followed soon after by the Roman Empire, religion and the intolerance it tended to breed became fundamental ingredients, in regional politics and have remained such ever since. Sicker shows that the political history of the pre-Islamic Middle East provides ample evidence that the geopolitical and religious factors conditioning political decision-making tended to promote military solutions to political problems, making conflict resolution through war the norm, with the peaceful settlement of disputes quite rare. A sweeping synthesis that will be of considerable interest to scholars, students, and others concerned with Middle East history and politics as well as international relations and ancient history.

Martins, Ana Maria, and Adriana Cardoso, eds. Word Order Change. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198747307.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
This book is a collection of thirteen detailed studies on word order change within the framework of diachronic generative syntax. An initial chapter contextualizes them and introduces the theme in order to make clear from the onset its relevance and appeal. The sample of languages investigated is diverse and displays significant historical depth. Different branches of the Indo-European family are represented both through classical and living languages, namely: a wide range of Early Indo-European languages (Sanskrit, Greek, Indic, Avestan, Hittite, Tocharian, among others), Romance languages (Latin, Italian, European Portuguese, Brazilian Portuguese), Germanic languages (Dutch, English), and a Celtic language (Irish). Besides, three chapters are dedicated to Hungarian and one chapter deals with Coptic Egyptian. The essays in the book use the tools provided by the generative theory of grammar to investigate the constrained ways in which older linguistic variants give rise to new ones in the course of time, with the aim of contributing insights into the properties of natural language. Two ingredients of the generative framework make it especially appropriate to deal with word order phenomena, namely movement as a syntactic operation (embedded in the theory of grammar) and a richly articulated clausal architecture composed with lexical but also abstract functional categories. This collective volume is unique in the way it provides through in-depth language-internal or comparative studies new perspectives on the relation between word order change and syntactic movement, under the constraints imposed by particular instantiations of clausal architecture.

Alcock, Joan P. Food in the Ancient World. www. greenwood. com, 2005. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9798400652646.

Full text
Abstract:
The ways of life of four great ancient civilizations— Egyptian, Greek, Roman, and Celtic—are illuminated here through their foodways. As these cultures moved toward settled agriculture, a time of experimentation and learning began. Cities emerged, and with them consumer societies that needed to be supplied. Food Culture in the Ancient World draws on writings of classical authors such as Petronius, Galen, and Cato, as well as on archeological findings, to present intimate insight into ancient peoples. This volume will be indispensable as it complements classical history, cultural, and literature studies at the high school and college levels and will also inform the general reader. The book begins with an overview of the civilizations and their agricultural practices and trade. A full discussion of available foodstuffs describes the discovery, emergence, usage, and appraisals of a host of ingredients. A subsequent chapter covers food by civilization. Chapters on food preparation, the food professions, and eating habits provide a fascinating look at the social structure, with slaves and women preparing and serving food. Accounts of the gatherings of slaves and freedmen in taverns, inns, and bars and the notorious banquet, symposium, feast, and convivium of the elite are particularly intriguing and crucial to understanding male society. Other aspects of ancient life brought to life for the reader include food for soldiers, food in religious and funerary practices, and concepts of diet and nutrition. Many Classical recipes are interspersed with the text, along with illustrations.
